Paranosema (Antonospora) locustae (Canning) is a microsporidium with an extensive host range including >100 reported insect hosts from the order Orthoptera. The susceptibility of two species of locusts (Orthoptera: Acrididae) – the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria subsp. migratorioides (Fairmaire & Reiche), and the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria Forsskål – to P. locustae was compared under laboratory conditions at a decreased temperature of 27 °C to enhance susceptibility to infection. Locusta migratoria was found highly vulnerable as infection percentages exceeded 70% at 104, 105, and 106 spores per insect, and mortality increased with increasing dosage. Conversely, P. locustae spores were not found in S. gregaria throughout the experiment. Only at 107 spores per insect, as many as 20% of S. gregaria were infected. This suggests that the desert locust is resistant to P. locustae infection, as opposed to the migratory locust. The laboratory models of these parasite–host systems may be useful for elucidating mechanisms of insect immunity to microsporidia.  相似文献

Since the fatty acid ester profile of a given biofuel is relatively consistent with the source’s fatty acid profile, the properties of the biodiesel produced from a particular feedstock exhibit predictable quality. Thus, lipid fractions and the fatty acid composition of stationary growth-phase cultures of the local strains of the diatoms Skeletonema costatum and Navicula gregaria were analysed to evaluate their suitability as biodiesel feedstock. Total lipid content was 20.83 pg cell−1 in S. costatum and 19.17 pg cell−1 in N. gregaria. Neutral lipids were the main fraction of total lipids in both species, accounting for ca. 65% and 76%, respectively. S. costatum was predominant in saturated fatty acids (SFAs; 43.48 %) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs; 40.11%), while N. gregaria was predominant in MUFAs (54.85%), followed by SFAs (33.42%). In S. costatum, the main fatty acids in neutral lipid fraction were myristic, palmitic, palmitoleic and oleic acids, while the main ones in N. gregaria were palmitic and palmitoleic acids. The oils extracted from these species presented linolenic acid contents within biodiesel’s quality specifications. However, in neutral lipid fraction both species showed eicosapentaenoic acid levels higher than the required limit. The lipid quality analysed in both species suggests that a biodiesel derived from these oils may present an acceptable cetane number, but likely poor cold-flow properties. This baseline information is useful for future research tending to find more suitable conditions in order to improve oil yield. In addition, both estuarine species neither compete with agriculture for food nor require farmland nor fresh water.  相似文献

The nut weevil Curculio nucum (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is responsible for high yield losses in several hazelnut‐growing areas of Europe and Turkey, if not regularly controlled using pesticides. The resistance of hazelnut varieties to the nut weevil is known but poorly investigated so far. Thus a 2‐year study was carried out to investigate factors affecting C. nucum attacks on two cultivars [Tonda Gentile delle Langhe (TGL), Ennis] and four selections (Daria, 101, B6, L35) in a 15‐year‐old orchard of northwestern Italy. Nut developmental stages and shell characteristics, such as hardness and thickness, were measured and correlated to the biological cycle of the nut weevil and to the damage by its larvae. During the 2‐year sampling, nut weevil adults were collected on all cultivars and selections, but in greater quantities on TGL and Daria, and in lower quantities on 101 and B6. In 2005, by female dissection, mature eggs were observed from late June, when the mean temperature exceeded 18°C. Differences between cultivars and selections were found in nut and kernel development, and in shell hardening; in particular, the kernel development was directly related with the shell hardness. At harvest, the damage varied on average from 2.57% in cultivar TGL to 51.84% in selection 101 of total nuts harvested, so independently of the numbers of the collected weevil adults. These two varieties were the earliest and the latest in kernel development and shell hardening, respectively. Therefore, the susceptibility to nut weevil attacks was strictly related to shell hardening; in fact, a rapid hardening of the shell can hamper the oviposition of C. nucum females. By contrast, no correlation was found between shell thickness and damage at harvest.  相似文献

The shell repair scars of modern Nautilus pompilius in the Philippines presumably due to sub‐lethal predatory attacks were examined throughout ontogeny ranging from hatching to maturity, revealing the higher risk of fatality in earlier ontogenetic stages. The examinations throughout ontogeny demonstrate that: (1) sub‐lethal predatory attacks by other organisms have no preferred position through ontogeny; (2) the sizes of shell repair scars are similar throughout ontogeny and, therefore, the width and length of shell repair scars relative to shell diameter decrease from hatching towards maturity; and (3) the proportion of sub‐lethal predatory attacks within 10 mm increments of shell diameter are similar irrespective of shell diameter or decrease approaching maturity. The numbers of the irregular, radiating, black shell repair scars, indicating injury to the soft parts at shell breakage, decrease at a diameter >80 mm and none were found at <56 mm in shell diameter. Furthermore, the rarity of juvenile trapping data might be related to the higher fatality from predatory attacks in earlier ontogenetic stages, providing crucial information for the conservation of N. pompilius.  相似文献

Take-off activity of the desert locust,Schistocerca gregaria (Forsk.), phasegregaria, was studied in a temperature-controlled laboratory environment and possible relationships with certain meteorological factors were analysed. A statistically significant relationship between the passage of cold fronts and an increased take-off rate was found. The reaction of the locusts could not be correlated to changes in VLF electromagnetic radiation or to the atmospheric pressure.  相似文献

  1. The northern subspecies of desert locust Schistocerca gregaria gregaria has recently expanded into western Asia. It poses a serious threat to food security in areas that are already socially and politically unstable. Its further expansion into other parts of southwestern Asia is an issue of great concern (e.g., China).
  2. We assembled S. g. gregaria occurrence records that were accumulated by the Food and Agriculture Organization and environmental variables that summarized aspects of climate, soil condition and vegetation. We predicted the potential distribution of S. g. gregaria via the fine-tuned Maxent model and ensemble ecological niche model approaches.
  3. The models predicted that India and other southwestern Asian countries face high risk of S. g. gregaria invasion because of the presence of suitable habitats and the absence of natural barriers that would prevent S. g. gregaria dispersal into these areas. By contrast, the risk of S. g. gregaria invasion in China is low because the suitability values were very low. Moreover, the Tianshan Mountains, the Kunlun Mountains and the Himalaya Mountains may act as natural barriers against S. g. gregaria dispersal.
  4. Responses of S. g. gregaria to these environmental variables were modelled using fine-tuned Maxent models.

Differences in shell morphology in the intertidal prosobranchmollusc Calliostoma zizyphinum were studied from a number ofsites within four geographical regions of the British Isleswith varying exposures to wave action and crab predation. Meanvalues of damage scarring were highest in shells sampled fromStrangford Lough, Northern Ireland, and lowest in individualsfrom the Atlantic Coast. Shells collected from the Isle of Manwere smaller than those from either the Atlantic coast of Irelandor Strangford Lough. Shells from Strangford Lough had tallershells (higher aspect ratio) than shells from the County Downand Atlantic Coast and shells from the County Down coast weremore squat (lower aspect ratio) than those from all other areas.Shells from Strangford Lough were significantly thinner thanshells from all other geographical areas. The relationshipsbetween shell damage scarring and shell size and tallness werenot consistent among areas. Shells from Strangford Lough arenotable in showing a steep, positive relationship between shellsize and scarring and a steep, negative relationship betweenscarring and tallness. The unusual shell phenotypes observedin shells from Strangford Lough may be explained by rapid shellgrowth, which would not only allow Calliostoma to attain a sizerefuge from crab predators but also to recover successfullyfrom repeated crab attacks on the shell lip. Such a strategywould result in larger, thinner shells with a high number ofdamage scars. (Received 6 June 2006; accepted 20 December 2006)  相似文献

Specimens of Munida gregaria were collected within and in the vicinity of a bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella in Queen Charlotte Sound, New Zealand. The crustacean contained paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) with an analogue profile dominated by N-sulfocarbamoyl analogues (C1,2 and GTX5) and carbamate gonyautoxins (GTX1,4), similar to that of the dinoflagellate. A feeding experiment showed that M. gregaria is capable of actively grazing on A. catenella and it may play a role in controlling population growth of the dinoflagellate. This is the first account of the accumulation of PST by M. gregaria. When it is periodically abundant, M. gregaria is an important food item for fish, birds and other marine fauna and they are a vector by which PST may be transferred to higher trophic levels.  相似文献

The taxonomy of the Australian species of two Ropalidia species groups, the R. stigma group and R. variegata group, is revised and their distribution patterns are discussed. Two species in the R. stigma group (R. darwini and R. elegantula), and four species in the R. variegata group (R. flavinoda, R. gregaria, R. mutabilis and R. revolutionalis) are recognized in Australia, with a new synonymy of R. mutabilis torresiana Richards, 1978, under R. gregaria (de Saussure, 1854). Icaria torrida Smith, 1863, from Seram Island is synonymized with R. unicolor (Smith, 1859).  相似文献

The involvement of second messengers in modulating Schistocerca gregaria rectal ion and fluid transport was investigated using two in vitro bioassay systems: everted rectal sacs and rectal flat sheets. Various agents known to block or activate specific signal transduction pathways were employed in these bioassays. Cyclic AMP stimulated rectal fluid reabsorption (Jv) and Cl transport (Isc) to the same extent as aqueous extracts of corpus cardiacum storage lobes. Cyclic GMP also partially (50%) stimulated both rectal Jv and Isc. Exogenous Ca2+ was not required for the maintenance of rectal transport, indeed Ca2+ free conditions increased the amount of stimulatable Jv. There was some evidence indicating intracellular Ca2+ may play a minor role in controlling rectal transport. The phospholipase C mediated signal transduction pathway was not involved with the stimulation of rectal transport, and appeared to have an inhibitory role. Neuroparsins, antidiuretic neuropeptides from Locusta migratoria, showed no activity upon either S. gregaria rectal ion or fluid transport. The findings of this study show that the two closely related insects possess discrete antidiuretic factors which stimulate rectal transport via different signal transduction pathways. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Munida gregaria and M. subrugosa have been considered two different species for more than a century; however, after a recent molecular phylogenetic study, they are considered a single polymorphic species. Yet, the use of markers to diagnose species may be misleading when divergence between species is recent, since a speciation event may be obscured by the retention and stochastic sorting of ancestral polymorphisms. The morphs gregaria and subrugosa of Munida gregaria constitute an interesting case for the study of behavioural isolation since they are sympatric, breed at the same time of the year, and might have experienced a recent speciation. Mating behaviour observations and mate choice mating trials were conducted in order to investigate the potential existence of a behavioural prezygotic barrier to gene flow between these two morphs. Since factors involved in mate choice in galatheids are unknown, the four possible combinations of the two different morphs in trios were used to test for the existence of mate choice. Video recordings of all the possible trio combinations revealed that there was cross-attraction between males and females of different morphs. Females bearing partial broods participated in encounters as well as non-ovigerous females. The frequency and duration of homo- and heterotypic encounters were registered, and a reproductive isolation index was calculated for each variable for each trio. The isolation indexes calculated were not different from zero indicating random mating, and were not affected by the composition of the trio or the partial ovigerous condition of females. These results provided evidence of the absence of behavioural prezygotic barriers to gene flow between the morphs gregaria and subrugosa of M. gregaria.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of FMRFamide-like immunoreactivity in the metathoracic ganglion of the locust, Schistocerca gregaria, has been investigated in serial semithin transverse sections with the use of the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique. The topographical distribution of approximately 120 immunopositive neurons was established. Antiserum against bovine pancreatic polypeptide (BPP) stains the same ganglionic cells as FMRFamide-antiserum, yet this staining is largely blocked after preabsorption to FMRFamide. A comparison of these results with those from other studies suggests that there may be more than one type of endogenous RFamide-like peptide.  相似文献

Details are given of techniques for preparing surface spreads of locust spermatocytes for light and electron microscopy. The pachytene synaptonemal complex (SC) karyotypes of Locusta migratoria and Schistocerca gregaria are analysed and compared. Up to six different SCs can be identified in Locusta migratoria based on lengths, centromere positions, and possession of nucleolar organiser regions, but only two SCs are identifiable in Schistocerca gregaria. The total SC length is significantly greater in Schistocerca gregaria than in Locusta migratoria, and this difference is almost exactly proportional to the difference in the genomic DNA contents of the two species.  相似文献

In the present study, we present the full sequence of the mitochondrial genome of the African desert locust Schistocerca gregaria gregaria. The size of 15625 bp reported matches very well with mitochondrial genomes of other Orthopteriodea. The mitochondrial genome comprises 13 protein‐coding genes, two ribosomal RNAs and 22 t‐RNAs with two t‐RNA (trnD and trnK) rearrangements that are typical for the taxon Caelifera. We compared the sequence with 12 mitochondrial genes of Schistocerca gregaria flaviventris and Schistocerca americana and used some of these data to construct phylogenetic trees, which confirm the close relationship between the two subspecies S. g. flaviventris and S. g. gregaria. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 296–305.  相似文献

Borings, attributed to acrothoracic barnacles, occur on the platyceratid gastropod Naticonema lineatum (Conrad) from the Middle Devonian Hamilton Group of western New York and rarely in specimens as old as the Early Devonian. These latter are the oldest known acrothoracid borings are in the fossil record. The borings are consistently developed as laterally compressed, inequilateral pouches exclusively on these gastropods, commonly as dense infestations.

Naticonema shells yielding borings typically occur associated with partially articulated qrinoid remains, and they are sometimes found attached to crinoids in a manner similar to coprophagous Platyceras. In addition to barnacle borings, Naticonema shells often bear thin encrustations of bryozoans which are usually perforated by these borings but sometimes also overgrow them. Barnacles bored live hosts; gastropods prevented shell penetration by producing cyst‐like secondary secretions of calcite beneath acrothoracid boreholes.

The relative antiquity of these borings and their association with coprophagous platyceratids makes their discovery particularly significant in revealing aspects of the early ecology of barnacles. Attachment to the host commensal gastropods was one of the first successful life modes of these crustaceans prior to their later diversification to other habitats. Mississippian and Pennsylvanian occurrences of similarly bored gastropods demonstrate continuity of the barnacle‐gastropod‐crinoid ecological association from the Middle to Late Paleozoic.  相似文献

In the albino mutant of an Okinawa strain of Locusta migratoria (L.) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), albinism is caused by the absence of the dark‐colour‐inducing neurohormone (DCIN), which is present in the corpora cardiaca (CC) of normally coloured phenotypes. This study tests whether the absence of DCIN is responsible for albinism in an albino mutant of another locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forsk.) (Orthoptera: Acrididae). This seemed feasible because a single Mendelian unit controls albinism in both species. However, implantation of CC, or injection of an extract of CC, from albino donors of S. gregaria, induce dark coloration in crowded nymph recipients of the Okinawa albino mutant of L. migratoria, as effectively as do implanted CC, or injections of extract of CC, from normal phenotype donors of S. gregaria. Therefore, DCIN is present in the albino mutant of S. gregaria, and consequently, the albinism in this mutant is not caused by its absence. Implantation of CC, or injection of extracts of CC, from albino donors of S. gregaria to conspecific albino nymphs does not induce darkening. Only extremely high doses of synthetic DCIN injected into albino nymphs of S. gregaria are effective, inducing some darkening. The dose to induce such darkening in albino nymphs of S. gregaria is 50 nmol, ≈ 5 × 106 times higher than that (10 femtomol) needed to induce equivalent darkening in nymphs of the Okinawa albinos of L. migratoria. The results are discussed and some possible explanations of the observed effects outlined.  相似文献

Predatory traces, in which the tracemaker has damaged the prey animal's skeleton to kill and consume it, have a deep fossil history and have received much scientific attention. Several types of predatory traces have been assigned to ichnotaxa, but one of the most studied predatory traces, the wedge-shaped excision produced as a result of attacks mainly by crustaceans on the apertures of gastropod shells, has yet to be described as an ichnotaxon. We propose the ichnogenus Caedichnus to describe the shell damage produced by aperture peeling behavior. Caedichnus is produced by predators that are unable to crush their prey's shells outright. Depending on the predator's peeling ability and the prey's withdrawal depth within the shell, the trace can extend through several whorls of the shell. Aperture peel attacks may fail, allowing such damage to be repaired by surviving gastropods. Thus, the types of attacks that produce Caedichnus may exert selective pressure on prey to evolve better-defended shells (in the case of gastropods) or to inhabit better-defended shells (in the case of hermit crabs). The identification of these trace fossils will enhance our understanding of how predation influences the morphological, and even behavioral, evolution of prey organisms.  相似文献

Locusta migratoria has only 70% of the germ line DNA value of the related species Schistocerca gregaria in spite of a uniform karyotype. This difference is maintained in the nuclei of the testis wall, ovariole tip, mid-gut diverticulum, Malpighian tubule and fat. The distribution of nuclear DNA contents is tissue specific but the peaks in the distributions do not conform with members of a doubling series. It is suggested that both phenomena may be connected with the mechanism of tissue differentiation in insects, the latter by differential replication of those chromosome regions which are active in particular tissues.  相似文献

Most species of freshwater mussels (Unionoida) show a wide variability in shell form and size but an understanding of which factors determine unionoid morphology is poor. We identified ecophenotypic trends in shell and internal characters within three unionoid species from two habitat types (marinas and river) of the River Thames, UK, using traditional and modern morphometric techniques. In marinas, all species grew to larger maximum sizes than in the river, which might be a result of higher temperatures and phytoplankton densities in marinas. Unio pictorum in marinas was more elongated than in the river and Fourier shape analysis revealed a trend from dorsally arched river specimens to straight dorsal and pointed posterior margins in marina individuals. The degree of shell elongation and shape of dorso‐posterior margin were not associated with sediment composition, but were associated with the different hydrological characters of the two habitat types. Relative shell width was a poor indicator of collection site and influenced by allometric growth. Unlike U. pictorum, a difference in shell elongation of marina and river mussels could not be detected in Unio tumidus and Anodonta anatina. However, all three species showed the same trends regarding the shape of the dorso‐posterior shell margin. This shell character may thus have broad ecological significance and could have considerable utility to palaeontologists, taxonomists, and conservation biologists. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 98 , 814–825.  相似文献

Olfactory receptor neurons present in two morphological sensillum types on the male Schistocerca gregaria antenna were for the first time investigated physiologically when stimulated with behaviourally relevant odours. Neurons present in trichoid/basiconic sensilla showed clear excitatory responses to compounds present in the male-produced aggregation pheromone and also to a plant produced compound. Sensilla could be categorised physiologically according to the responses of their receptor neurons to the tested stimuli. Also receptor neurons present in sensilla coeloconica responded to aggregation pheromone components, but always in an inhibitory fashion. These neurons could, however, be excited by a plant produced compound and by some acids present in the nymphal odour. The antennal lobe of the male S. gregaria was observed to contain about 1000 very small glomerular structures. Single receptor neurons were stained from the antenna to the antennal lobe using a cobalt lysine technique. These stainings revealed a multi glomerular axonal branching pattern of antennal receptor neurons.Abbreviations AN antennal nerve - AL antennal lobe - RN receptor neuron  相似文献
