Red deer hinds play a significant role in selecting stags for mating. We tested the hypotheses that in red deer ( Cervus elaphus ) the probability of becoming a harem holder (and hence achieving reproductive success) occurs in stags bearing larger, branched antlers and showing low fluctuating asymmetry (FA). Eleven antler characteristics were measured; absolute and relative FA were calculated on 51 cast antler sets from 19 individually recognized stags. Probability of becoming a harem holder (PBHH) was originally analysed separately, i.e. for antler size and FA of each antler characteristic and calculated factors for both antler size and FA. If analysed separately, large antler size and low relative but high absolute FA increased PBHH. When we combined antler size and FA of antler characteristics in one model using antler size and FA factors, however, PBHH and achieving reproductive success were mainly dependent on increasing antler size and enhanced antler branching rather than on FA. We present estimates of the selection on and the heritability of a male secondary sexual weapon in a wild population: antler size in red deer. Male red deer with large antlers had increased lifetime breeding success, both before and after correcting for body size, generating a standardized selection gradient of 0.44 (+/- 0.18 SE). Despite substantial age- and environment-related variation, antler size was also heritable (heritability of antler mass = 0.33 +/- 0.12). However the observed selection did not generate an evolutionary response in antler size over the study period of nearly 30 years, and there was no evidence of a positive genetic correlation between antler size and fitness nor of a positive association between breeding values for antler size and fitness. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that a heritable trait under directional selection will not evolve if associations between the measured trait and fitness are determined by environmental covariances: In red deer males, for example, both antler size and success in the fights for mates may be heavily dependent on an individual's nutritional state.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetries and reproductive success in the peacock blenny   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In an investigation of the relationship between reproductive success and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in the peacock blenny Salaria pavo , FA was measured in four bilaterally paired characters in successful and unsuccessful males during the breeding season. Reproductive success among successful males was assessed by calculating the number of eggs the males were defending. Absolute FA values relative to trait size were high for all characters and it is suggested that this could be a consequence of sub-optimal environmental conditions. Two of the traits presented higher absolute FA values suggesting a lower canalization during ontogeny. No difference in FA between successful and unsuccessful males was found and no relationship between FA and number of eggs among the successful males occurred for any of the measured traits. A composite index of FA, that should better reflect overall developmental competence, was also unrelated to reproductive success. These results indicate that FA is not associated with reproductive success among males of S. pavo . Successful males were larger than unsuccessful males and a strong positive correlation was detected between the body length of the parental males and the number of eggs they had in the nest, even when controlling for the internal nest area. Body size may give males a reproductive advantage by being preferred by females and by having an advantage in male-male competition for nests of higher quality.  相似文献

Antler lengths were recorded of a total of 250 male fallow deer (Dama dama (L)). Animals sampled were from marked populations where the majority of individuals were of known age. Asymmetry in antler length was normally distributed with a mean not significantly different from zero, confirming that differences in length between the antler pair constitute a true fluctuating asymmetry (FA). We found no clear relationship between the degree of asymmetry in antler length of an individual male and either population density or actual body mass. We did, however, detect a significant relationship between asymmetry and deviation from maximum cohort bodyweight. If deviation from maximum weight within a cohort may be considered some index of competitive success or increasing environmental stress, this may suggest that asymmetry in antler length relates in some way to developmental stress suffered by the individual concerned. The degree of asymmetry recorded in antler length also showed a significant decline with animal age, with antlers of animals of 2 years or older showing significantly greater symmetry. This is consistent with a hypothesis that despite continued competition for resources, there is a changing balance of selection pressure as animals reach maturity, with increased pressure from sexual selection requiring males to produce significantly more symmetrical ornaments.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry, the random deviation from perfect bilateral symmetry, has recently attracted considerable attention. Levels of asymmetry have been shown to correlate with measures of individual quality. We measured asymmetry in a variety of ornamental and non-ornamental traits in red junglefowl, Gallus gallus and examined the patterns of asymmetry among different traits within an individual. All ornamental traits had significantly higher levels of fluctuating asymmetry than did non-ornamental traits. However, inter-trait correlations of asymmetry were low for both ornamental and non-ornamental traits. We then correlated measures of asymmetry with several potential indicators of male quality, including comb size, body size, and body condition. We found little evidence that asymmetry in any measured trait reflected male quality. We measured asymmetry in ornamental traits at several stages of development and found no relationship between male condition and changes in asymmetry over time. Our results indicate that it is necessary to employ caution when choosing traits to be measured in studies of fluctuating asymmetry and that a relationship between asymmetry and individual quality cannot be assumed.  相似文献

Several earlier studies have indicated a negative relationship between fluctuating asymmetry (FA) and fitness. We tested this assumption by investigating the association between petal asymmetry and several fitness-related characters among natural and common garden populations of Lychnis viscaria. Neither seed set, germination percentage nor the growth rate of seedlings were related to the level of flower asymmetry either among natural populations or in common garden conditions. The only significant association found was a positive connection between petal asymmetry and seed mass measured from natural populations. Thus, in contrary to many earlier published reports, we did not find any evidence for a negative relationship between FA and fitness even if we controlled for measurement error, we had adequate sample size and we measured these characters in two environments. This suggests that FA is not consistently related to individual quality and fitness.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) has been suggested as a measure of the sensitivity of development to a wide array of genetic and environmental stresses. It has been also suggested that antlers in red deer could be important during social and rutting displays. We used antler measurements of 51 males that were measured over subsequent seasons, from 3–8 years of age, and analysed three antler traits: antler weight, length, and the number of antler tines (antler size). We calculated absolute and relative FA. All three size traits were highly significantly intercorrelated. By contrast to this, the FA of the three traits, did not show such relationships. With increasing age, antler size and FA also increased. When testing the repeatability of FA and antler size, there was a principal difference in the pattern between FA and antler size, with the latter being much more consistent than the former. This suggests that antler size, not FA, may be a good predictor of the bearer's quality in mate selection. Secondary sexual characters have been hypothesized to signal male quality and should demonstrate a negative relationship between the size of the trait and degree of fluctuating asymmetry because they are costly to produce. We collected morphometric and antler data from 439 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Oklahoma, USA, in order to determine whether measures of antler asymmetry follow the patterns predicted for sexually selected characters. Relative fluctuating asymmetry was negatively related to antler size for all deer and within age groups up to five and a half years of age. We did not detect an association between asymmetry and antler size among deer that were six and a half years or older. When categorizing deer by antler size, we found that deer with small antlers (< or = 33rd percentile) had greater levels of relative asymmetry than deer with large antlers (< or = 67th percentile). The relative asymmetry of antlers was negatively related to age and was greatest in deer that were one and a half years old. Relative asymmetry was also negatively related to carcass mass, inside spread, skull length and body length. These data suggest that asymmetry in the antlers of white-tailed deer may be a reliable signal of quality and, as such, may be important in maintaining honesty in intrasexual advertisements during the breeding season.  相似文献

We studied among-individual variation in developmental instability (DI) and fitness-related parameters in 80 individual plants of Fucus vesiculosus (Phaeophyta). To minimize differential environmental effects, plants were sampled from one environmentally homogenous population. DI was measured as fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of four bilaterally symmetric traits (branch length, receptacle length and width, and bladder width) for an average total of 30 structures per individual. FA levels varied significantly among individual plants, consistent with a coefficient of variation of 0.12 for organism-wide DI or 0.13–0.21 for trait-specific DI. These values are lower than estimates for other organisms, suggesting that the genetic heterogeneity in DI was low. The data provide some evidence for organism-wide DI, but simulations show that organism-wide and trait-specific variation cannot be conclusively separated. Growth rate of branch tips was determined experimentally, demonstrating significant variation among individuals. FA was not significantly correlated with growth rate or with morphological variables associated with fecundity, age, size, and health. At the same time, the signs of all the correlation coefficients were consistent with the expectation of a negative relationship between DI and fitness. The simulations indicated that the correlation between FA and the underlying DI was comparatively strong (high hypothetical repeatability), implying that the lack of significant associations between FA and fitness variables reflected a weak relationship between DI and these fitness parameters. A number of studies have reported a significant negative association between fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of bilateral morphological traits and individual fitness traits, but almost all of these are unreplicated and based on small sample sizes using single trait estimates of FA. We therefore tested if there was a relationship between the FA of five bilateral traits and fecundity and development time in Drosophila in a multiple replicated experimental design. Stressed treatments were included to increase the variability of traits and to test whether associations among traits were affected by changes in the environment. Significant positive relationships were found between the size of wing characters and mean fecundity for the 5‐day period and this relationship tended to be stronger in the stress treatments. No association was found between FA and mean fecundity for any of the traits measured. Similarly, a significant positive relationship was detected between wing trait size and development time but no association was detected between trait FA and development time. There were no differences between mean fecundity or development time of extreme asymmetry phenotypes compared with modal phenotypes. These results are discussed with reference to suggestions in the literature that FA can be used to estimate individual fitness.  相似文献

Small random deviations from left–right symmetry in bilateral traits, termed fluctuating asymmetry (FA), are theoretically predicted to increase with environmental stress and believed to constitute a potential biomarker in conservation. However, reported relationships between FA and stress are generally weak and variable among organisms, traits and stresses. Here we test if, and to what extent, FA increases with nutritional stress, estimated from independent feather growth measurements, in free-ranging house sparrows (Passer domesticus). Ptilochronological feather marks showed significant heterogeneity among study plots, indicating that house sparrow populations were exposed to variable levels of nutritional stress during development. However, individuals from more stressed populations did not show increased levels of fluctuating asymmetry in tarsus or rectrix length, nor was there evidence for significant between-trait concordance in FA at the individual or the population level. Lack of support for FA in tarsus and rectrix length as estimator of nutritional stress in house sparrows may indicate that developmental instability is insensitive to nutritional stress in this species, poorly reflected in patterns of fluctuating asymmetry due to ecological or statistical reasons, or highly context-specific. Such uncertainty continues to hamper the use of FA as a biomarker tool in conservation planning.  相似文献

We have been checking the following working hypotheses: 1) There is a negative correlation between genetic heterozygosity and fluctuating asymmetry (FA); 2) FA is a measure of developmental stability/instability of the whole organism, i.e. we expect negative correlation between FA and morphological proximity of a set of mass-size variables of an individual to a population centroid; and 3) FA is a measure of character-specific stability in a population, i.e. we expect correlation between magnitude of FA and deviation of an individual from the population centroid of the bilateral characters themselves. For this purpose each individual in a sample of about 200 elderly individuals was assessed for 11 polymorphic blood systems (14 genetic loci) as well as for a set of 26 anthropometric traits: 1) a set of ten mass size variables; and 2) a set of eight pairs of bilateral measurements. Four multivariate measures of morphological centrality were computed, two measures for size and two measures of shape distances from the ith individual to the population centroid for mass-size variables and also for the bilateral variables. A multivariate measure of FA for 8 bilateral pairs was also computed. No relationship was detected between FA and heterozygosity, or between FA and any of the four multivariate deviations. Thus, we concluded that our data do not support the listed hypotheses.  相似文献

While fluctuating asymmetry (FA; small, random deviations from perfect symmetry in bilaterally symmetrical traits) is widely regarded as a proxy for environmental and genetic stress effects, empirical associations between FA and stress are often weak or heterogeneous among traits. A conceptually important source of heterogeneity in relationships with FA is variation in the selection history of the trait(s) under study, i.e. traits that experienced a (recent) history of directional change are predicted to be developmentally less stable, potentially through the loss of canalizing modifiers. Here we applied X-ray photography on museum specimens and live captures to test to what extent the magnitude of FA and FA-stress relationships covary with directional shifts in traits related to the flight apparatus of four East-African rainforest birds that underwent recent shifts in habitat quality and landscape connectivity. Both the magnitude and direction of phenotypic change varied among species, with some traits increasing in size while others decreased or maintained their original size. In three of the four species, traits that underwent larger directional changes were less strongly buffered against random perturbations during their development, and traits that increased in size over time developed more asymmetrically than those that decreased. As we believe that spurious relationships due to biased comparisons of historic (museum specimens) and current (field captures) samples can be ruled out, these results support the largely untested hypothesis that directional shifts may increase the sensitivity of developing traits to random perturbations of environmental or genetic origin.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry occurs when an individual is unable to undergo identical development on both sides of a bilaterally symmetrical trait. Fluctuating asymmetry measures the sensitivity of development to a wide array of genetic and environmental stresses. We propose that fluctuating asymmetry is used in many signalling contexts for assessment of an individual's ability to cope with its environment. We hypothesize that fluctuating asymmetry is used in sexual selection, both in fighting and mate choice, and in competition for access to resources. Evidence is reviewed showing that the patterns of fluctuating asymmetry in secondary sexual characters differ from those seen in other morphological traits. Secondary sexual characters show much higher levels of fluctuating asymmetry. Also, there is often a negative relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and the absolute size of ornaments, whereas the relationship is typically U-shaped in other morphological traits. The common negative relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and ornament size suggests that many ornaments reliably reflect individual quality.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry of morphological traits is thought to reflect the capacity of a genotype to produce an integrated, functional phenotype. I tested three predictions. (1) In a polygynous breeding system, under intense sexual selection on males, breeding males should show greater symmetry in bilaterally symmetrical traits than non-breeding males or females. (2) If these traits are under stabilizing selection, highly symmetrical individuals also should be modal phenotypes, thus near the mean value for that trait, whereas individuals with increased asymmetry should represent marginal phenotypes, near the extremes of the distribution for that trait. (3) Differences in the intensity of sexual selection should be reflected in differences in the degree of fluctuating asymmetry between sexes among populations. I examined the relationship between male breeding status and the degree of fluctuating asymmetry of four bilaterally symmetrical- traits, preorbital and preopercular pores and pectoral and pelvic fin rays, in two populations of Pecos pupfish which differed in the intensity of sexual selection. These traits do not function in male-male competition or female choice, thus are not directly affected by sexual selection. In Mirror Lake breeding males, as a group, were most symmetrical for all four traits, while non-breeding males and females showed higher levels of fluctuating asymmetry. Similarly, symmetrical individuals also represented modal phenotypes for four traits (breeding males), and for three traits (non-breeding males and females). These patterns were not seen in the Lake Francis population, where breeding males were as asymmetrical as non-breeding males and females, and the degree of fluctuating symmetry did not differ between modal and marginal phenotypes for any of the four traits. When ecological conditions favour intense sexual selection, either through female choice, male-male competition, or both, breeding males represent the most fit phenotypes. Thus sexual selection reinforces the effects of stabilizing selection on characters that do not function as secondary sexual traits. However, when sexual selection is relaxed, differences between sexes disappear.  相似文献

It has been proposed that females use fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in sexual ornaments to assess male quality. FA of sexual traits is predicted to show greater sensitivity to stress than FA of nonsexual traits, and to be heritable. We used a half‐sib mating design and manipulation of larval food environment to test these predictions on stalk‐eyed flies, Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni, in which females prefer males with larger eyespans. We measured size and FA of eyestalks and of two nonsexually selected characters, wing length and width. We found no evidence of an increase in FA under larval food stress in any of the individual traits, although trait size decreased under stress. We combined FA across traits into a single composite index, and found that males reared in the most benign larval environment had significantly higher composite FA than males reared on other media. There was no such effect in females. Heritability of FA was not significantly different from zero in any of the traits, in any of the environments, although trait sizes showed high heritability. We conclude that FA in sexual and nonsexual traits is a poor indicator of developmental stress and genetic quality.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), small directionally random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry, is thought to reflect individual quality. Furthermore, it has been suggested that FA in secondary sexual characters can be used to assess mate or opponent quality during inter- or intrasexual competition. Studies on fallow deer, Dama dama, have suggested that FA in antlers reflects individual dominance, or the existence of a directional asymmetry (DA) with right antlers being consistently more developed than left antlers. To test these conflicting hypotheses, we analysed relationships between age, dominance and asymmetry in the number of antler points on mature fallow deer males during four rutting seasons in a single population. Age and dominance were only weakly correlated. The number of antler points displayed a pattern of DA (more points on the right than on the left side) that increased with age. Although dominance tended to increase with the total number of antler points, there was no relationship between the level of DA and dominance. Developmental instability (DI) has been proposed to relate negatively to aspects of evolutionary fitness, like mating success. One suggested indicator is fluctuating asymmetry (FA), random deviations from perfect symmetry in bilateral bodily traits. A meta-analytically robust negative association between FA and number of lifetime sexual partners has been previously shown in men and women. We examined the relationship between bodily FA across twelve traits and indicators of quantitative mating success in 284 individuals (141 males, age 19–30 years). Two further indicators of DI, minor physical anomalies (MPAs) and asymmetry in palmar atd angles, were also assessed. For men, no significant associations were detected, whereas for women, unexpected positive relationships of FA with the number of lifetime sexual partners and one-night stands emerged. Thus, in a large sample and using a more highly aggregated FA index, our study fails to replicate previous findings, though equivalence testing also did not support deviation from previous meta-analytic estimates, especially for men. No associations were found for MPAs and FA in atd angles in either sex.  相似文献

Developmental instability (DI) is the sensitivity of a developing trait to random noise and can be measured by degrees of directionally random asymmetry [fluctuating asymmetry (FA)]. FA has been shown to increase with loss of genetic variation and inbreeding as measures of genetic stress, but associations vary among studies. Directional selection and evolutionary change of traits have been hypothesized to increase the average levels of FA of these traits and to increase the association strength between FA and population‐level genetic variation. We test these two hypotheses in three‐spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) populations that recently colonized the freshwater habitat. Some traits, like lateral bone plates, length of the pelvic spine, frontal gill rakers and eye size, evolved in response to selection regimes during colonization. Other traits, like distal gill rakers and number of pelvic fin rays, did not show such phenotypic shifts. Contrary to a priori predictions, average FA did not systematically increase in traits that were under presumed directional selection, and the increases observed in a few traits were likely to be attributable to other factors. However, traits under directional selection did show a weak but significantly stronger negative association between FA and selectively neutral genetic variation at the population level compared with the traits that did not show an evolutionary change during colonization. These results support our second prediction, providing evidence that selection history can shape associations between DI and population‐level genetic variation at neutral markers, which potentially reflect genetic stress. We argue that this might explain at least some of the observed heterogeneities in the patterns of asymmetry.  相似文献
