Seventeen size-fractionation experiments were carried out duringthe summer of 1979 to compare biomass and productivity in the< 10, <8 and <5 µm size fractions with that ofthe total phytoplankton community in surface waters of NarragansettBay. Flagellates and non-motile ultra-plankton passing 8 µmpolycarbonate filters dominated early summer phytoplankton populations, while diatoms and dinoflagellates retained by 10 µm nylonnetting dominated during the late summer. A significant numberof small diatoms and dinoflagellates were found in the 10–8µm size fraction. The > 10 µm size fraction accountedfor 50% of the chlorophyll a standing crop and 38% of surfaceproduction. The <8 µm fraction accounted for 39 and18% of the surface biomass and production. Production by the< 8 µm fraction exceeded half of the total communityproduction only during a mid-summer bloom of microflagellates.Mean assimilation numbers and calculated carbon doubling ratesin the <8 µm (2.8 g C g Chl a–1 h–1; 0.9day–1)and<5 µm(1.7 g C g Chl a–1h–1; 0.5day–1)size fractions were consistently lower than those of the totalpopulation (4.8 g C g Chl a–1 h–1; 1.3 day–1)and the <10 µm size fraction (5.8 g C g Chl a–1h–1; 1.4 day –1). The results indicate that smalldiatoms and dinoflagellates in fractionated phytoplankton populationscan influence productivity out of proportion to their numbersor biomass. 1Present address: Australian Institute of Marine Science, P.M.B.No. 3, Townsville M.S.O., Qld. 4810, Australia.  相似文献

Oikopleura longicauda occurred throughout the year in ToyamaBay, southern Japan Sea, and analysis of its size compositionand maturity revealed that reproduction was continuous overtheyear. Somatic growth production (Pg) varied with season from0.03 to 103 mg carbon (C) m–2day–1 (annual Pg 4.5g C m–2), and house production (Pe) from 0.11 to 266 mgC m–2 day–1 (annualPe 11.3 g C m–2). The annualPg/B ratio was 176. Compared with production data of some predominantzooplankton species in Toyama Bay, it is suggested that despitetheir smaller biomass, appendicularians are an important secondaryproducer.  相似文献

The larvacean community was observed during an 18 month periodat the mouth of eutrophic Kingston Harbour, Jamaica. Duringthis period, larvaceans averaged 3607 m–3 with a biomassof 2.2mg ash-free dry weight m–3 (32.6mg AFDW m–2in a community dominated by Oiko pleura longicauda There wereno relationships between larvacean biornass and any size fractionof chlorophyll, suggesting that other factors must normallyregulate larvacean communities. The evidence indicates thatthis regulation is by predation. Annual production by larvaceanswas 586 kJ m–3 year –1 (29.3 g AFDW m–2 year–1);production of houses could represent an added 300–600kJ m–2 year. While copepod biomass was 10 times higherthan that of the larvaceans during the same period, copepodgrowth rates were only one.third those of larvaceans. Thus, larvacean annual production is at least 30% that of the copepods, due to their rapid growth rates, and at least 50% that of thecopepods when house production is considered. The contributionof larvaceans to plankton production has been underappreciatedhistorically when only their biomass is considered. 1Present address :Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute 7700Sandholdt Road, Moss Landing, CA 95039-0628, USA  相似文献

The growth rates of Appendicularia sicula, Fritillaria borealissargassi, Fritillaria haplostoma, Oikopleura dioica and Oikopleuralongicauda were determined from microcosms incubated in situat 23C in Jamaican waters. Experiments were conducted fromoligotrophic offshore waters, through mesotrophic Lime Cay andeutrophic Kingston Harbour in both natural and nutrient-enhancedphytoplankton communities. Length-weight relationships werecalculated for two of these species: O.longicauda log W=2.47log TL –6.10 and F.haplostoma log W=2.44 log TL –7.37,where weight (W) is in micrograms and trunk length (TL) is inmicrometres. Instantaneous growth rates averaged 1.7–2.5day–1 for the five species and were observed as high as3.3 day–1 These instantaneous rates are equivalent todaily specific growth rates averaging 4.6–11.4 and rangingup to 28. In larger genera, growth rates were related positivelyto picoplankton and nanoplankton concentration, and negativelyto the biomass of larvaceans, but in the smallest species growthwas unrelated to these factors. However, because the variabilityin these two factors within microcosms exceeded their naturalrange of variability, growth rates of larvaceans may normallybe unlimited by resources or population density effects. 1Present address :Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute 7700Sandholdt Road, Moss Landing, CA 95039-0628, USA 2Present address :Bedford Institute of Oceanography PO Box 1006,Dartmouth, Nova Scotia B2Y 4A2, Canada  相似文献

The distinct patterns of stratification in the North Channeland stratified region of the western Irish Sea influence theseasonal abundance of phytoplankton. The 3–4 month productionseason in the stratified region was characterized by productionand biomass peaks in the spring (up to 2378 mg C m2 day–1and 178.4 mg chlorophyll m–2) and autumn (up to 1280 mgC m–2 day–1 and 101.9 mg chlorophyll m–2).Phytoplankton in the North Channel exhibited a short, late productionseason with a single summer (June/July) peak in production (4483mg Cm–2 day–1) and biomass (–160.6 mg chlorophyllm–2). These differences have little influence on copepoddynamics. Both regions supported recurrent annual cycles ofcopepod abundance with similar seasonal maxima (182.8–241.8103ind. m–2) and dominant species (Pseudocalanus elongatusand Acartia clausi). Specific rates of population increase inthe spring were 0.071 and 0.048 day1 for the North Channel andstratified region, respectively. Increased copepod abundancein the stratified region coincided with the spring bloom, andwas significantly correlated with chlorophyll standing stock.Increased copepod abundance preceded the summer production peakin the North Channel. This increase was not correlated withchlorophyll standing crop, suggesting that a food resource otherthan phytoplankton may be responsible for the onset of copepodproduction prior to the spring bloom. Hetero-trophic microplanktonas an alternative food source, and advection of copepods fromthe stratified region, are proposed as possible explanationsfor copepod abundance increasing in advance of the summer peakin primary production.  相似文献

Clupeoid larvae were collected on eight cruises between February1984 and February 1985 in the coastal waters of Israel. Fromanalysis of daily growth increments of otoliths, growth ratesof the abundant clupeoids, Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardusand Sardinella aurita were found to be 0.55 mm day–1,0.67 mm day–1 and 0.60 mm day–1, respectively, duringthe first month after hatching. Ingestion rates were estimatedusing an equation from the literature relating ingestion andgrowth of larval fish. Ingestion calculated for populationsof fish larvae in pelagic waters ranged from 0 to >23 mgC m–2 day–1 with maximum rates observed in April.Annual ingestion by larval fish at a pelagic station near Haifawas calculated to be 2.2 g C m–2 year–1, 10–20%of annual primary production estimated from 14C uptake.  相似文献

The population carbon budget and seasonality of Boeckella minutain a newly formed subtropical reservoir were examined 3 yearsafter the reservoir filled. Average daily biomass was 26.4 mgC m–3 and the annual population carbon budget was: consumption2470, egestion 1482, assimilation 988, production 493 and respiration495, mg C m–3 year–1, and the average P/B and P/Aratios were 0.08 and 0.5 respectively. Clutch size and reproductiveeffort (egg production/assimilation) were low, and the proportionof males decreased throughout the population cycle. The seasonalabundance pattern changed from perennial (pre-filling years)to a 7 month cycle. It is suggested that eutrophication andthe spring bloom of cyanobacteria may have accentuated a seasonaldecrease in reproductive effort and survival, leading to anabsence of planktonic stages during summer, and that restingeggs facilitated population survival during the summer periodof stratification.  相似文献

The population dynamics of the scyphomedusa Aurelia aurita inSouthampton Water is characterized. Strobilation, indicatedby the presence of 1 mm ephyrae, occurred from the end of Januaryto the middle of March. Maximum abundances of up to 8.71 m–3occurred soon after ephyrae release, after which numbers declinedsteadily until the end of June, when the population was absentfrom Southampton Water. The residence time of 3–4 monthsis somewhat less than that reported in many other areas, includingKiel Bight and Gullmarfjord. The carbon biomass of A.auritaaccounted for 92–97% of the predominant gelatinous biomass(A.aurita, Pleurobrachia pileus and Phialidium hemisphericum)in the upper estuary, and this reached a maximum of 30.2 mgC m–3 in May 1990 and 27.6 mg C m–3 in June 1991.Coincident with increased water temperature and mesozooplanktonabundance during May, growth rates increased from 0.02–0.30mm day–1 to a peak of 4.8 mm day–1, with a maximumbell diameter of 120–140 mm reached in late May/earlyJune. Size to maturity was variable, although the smallest medusaobserved to be ‘ripe’, i.e. containing dividingeggs and planula larvae in the brood sacs on the oral arms, were 64–71 mm. Aurelia aurita is believed to be endemicto Southampton Water, but because of the double high water inthe area, short flushing rates of between 4.5 and 20 days maybe responsible for such short residence times of Aurelia medusae. The effects of strong NE winds were considered as factors governingthe distribution of medusae in years of atypical temporal abundance.  相似文献

Seasonal and vertical fluctuations of zooplankton species composition, biomass, and production were monitored by weekly sampling duringa two year period in one eutrophic pond in Central Finland. The study was one part of a more comprehensive study programto investigate the effects of warm water effluents from onesmall thermal power plant (35 MW) on the pond ecosystem. Becauseof the circulation of the pond water through the pumps in thepower plant the crustacean populations were very sparse in planktonduring the seasons the power plant was in operation (late Augustto May). During that time rotifers were dominant and some speciesreached very high densities (e.g., Keratella cochlearis s.l.ca. 15 000 ind. l–1 in sping). In summer months Asplanchnapriodonta, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, Bosmina longirostris, Mesocyclopsleuckarti and Thermocyclops oithonoides were dominant. A totalof 96 planktonic and meroplanktonic taxa were identified (26ciliates, 46 rotifers, 21 cladocerans and 3 copepods). The dryweight biomass of total zooplankton was 10 mg m–3 in wintermonths, 10–100 mg m–3 in spring and 300–1000mg m–3 in summer. The total yearly production of zooplanktonwas 8552 mg dry wt m–3 a–1 in 1979 and 8440 mg drywt m–3 a–1 in 1980, from which the proportion ofrotifers was 33–39%, cladocerans 52–58% and copepods8.6 –9.4%. The winter production was 0.2–0.5% ofthe total yearly production, that of spring and autumn togetherwas 8.1–10.4% and the remainder (89–91%) was summerproduction.  相似文献

We investigated the seasonal occurrence, wet : dry : carbon: nitrogen weight ratios, population biomass, gastric pouchcontents, and rates of feeding, growth and respiration of thescyphomedusa Aurelia aurita in the central part of the InlandSea of Japan. Aurelia aurita medusae began to appear in January/Februaryas ephyrae, reached annual maximum body size in July/August,and disappeared, presumably due to death, by November. Initialslow growth in early spring was followed by a period of exponentialgrowth (mean growth rate: 0.069 d–1) between April andJuly. In the Ondo Strait, which is characterized by strong tidalmixing, the A. aurita population (mean carbon biomass: 66.0mg C m–3) overwhelmingly dominated the zooplankton-communitybiomass (mean biomass of micro- and mesozooplankton: 23.7 mgC m–3) between May and early August The gastric contentanalysis revealed that A. aurita ate almost all micro- and mesozooplankters,of which small copepods were most important. On the basis ofdigestion time for small copepods (60 min) and their abundancein the gastric pouch of field-collected A. aurita, we determinedthe weight specific feeding rates and clearance rates. The formerincreases linearly with increasing copepod abundance, but thelatter was relatively constant irrespective of the food supply. We also measured the respiration rates of A. aurita and expressedthem as functions of body weight and temperature. These physio-ecologicalparameters enabled us to construct the carbon budget of theA. aurita population typical of early summer in the Ondo Strait.Predicted population-feeding rate (6.07 mg C m–3 d–1)was higher than the population-food requirement for both metabolismand growth (4.55 mg C m–3 d–1), indicating thatfood supply was sufficient to sustain the observed growth rate. This feeding rate was equivalent to 26% of micro- and mesozooplanktonbiomass, a significant impact on zooplankton.  相似文献

Three marine phytoplankton species (Skeletonema costatum, Olisthodiscusluteus andGonyaulax tamarensis) were grown in batch culturesat 15°C and a 14:10 L:D cycle at irradiance levels rangingfrom 5 to 450 µEinst m–2 s–1. At each irradiance, during exponential growth, concurrent measurements were madeof cell division, carbon-specific growth rate, photosyntheticperformance (both O2 and POC production), dark respiration, and cellular composition in terms of C, N and chlorophyll a.The results indicate that the three species were similar withrespect to chemical composition, C:N (atomic) = 6.9 ±0.4, photo-synthetic quotient, 1.43 ± 0.09, and photosyntheticefficiency, 2.3 ±0.1 x 10–3 µmol O2 (µgChl a)–1 h–1 (µEinst m–2 s–1)–1.Differences in maximum growth rate varied as the –0.24power of cell carbon. Differences in growth efficiency, werebest explained by a power function of Chl a:C at µ = 0.Compensation intensities, ranged from 1.1 µEinst m–2s–1 for S. costatum to 35 forG. tamarensis and were foundto be a linear function of the maintenance respiration rate. The results indicate that interspecific differences in the µ–Irelationship can be adequately explained in terms of just threeparameters: cell carbon at maximum growth rate, the C:Chl aratio (at the limit as growth approaches zero) and the respirationrate at zero growth rate. A light-limited algal growth modelbased on these results gave an excellent fit to the experimentalµ–I curves and explained 97% of the observed interspecificvariability. 1Present address: Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory Columbiaof University, Palisades, NY 10964, USA  相似文献

The relationships between photosynthesis and photosyntheticphoton flux densities (PPFD, P-l) were studied during a red-tideof Dinophysis norvegica (July-August 1990) in Bedford Basin.Dinophysis norvegica, together with other dinoflagellates suchas Gonyaulax digitate, Ceratium tripos, contributed {small tilde}50%of the phytoplankton biomass that attained a maximum of 16.7µg Chla 1 and 11.93 106 total cells I–1.The atomic ratios of carbon to nitrogen for D.norvegica rangedfrom 8.7 to 10.0. The photosynthetic characteristics of fractionatedphytoplankton (>30 µm) dominated by D.norvegica weresimilar to natural bloom assemblages: o (the initial slope ofthe P-l curves) ranged between 0.013 and 0.047 µg C [µgChla]–1 h–1 [µmol m s–1]–1the maximum photosynthetic rate, pBm, between 0.66 and 1.85µg C [µghla]–1 h–1; lk (the photoadaptationindex) from 14 to 69 µ,mol m–2 s–1. Carbonuptake rates of the isolated cells of D.norvegica (at 780 µmolm–2 s–1) ranged from 16 to 25 pg C cell–1h and were lower than those for C.tripos, G.digitaleand some other dinoflagellates. The variation in carbon uptakerates of isolated cells of D.norvegica corresponded with PBmof the red-tide phytoplankton assemblages in the P-l experiments. Our study showed that D.norvegica, a toxigenic dinoflagellate, was the main contributor to the primary production in the bloom.  相似文献

We exposed natural zooplankton communities to in situ levelsof sunlight for 3 days at different depths in two north temperatelakes: one oligotrophic and one eutrophic. Natural fluxes ofUV-B radiation (280–320 nm) were manipulated with cutofffilters (Mylar®). There was substantial mortality in someof the zooplankton exposed to UV-B in the oligotrophic lake, but not in the eutrophic lake. Reproduction of Diaptomus wassuppressed by UV-B down to 6 m in the oligotrophic lake. Thesedata suggest that natural levels of UV-B radiation in the oligotrophiclake may prevent some species of zooplankton from continuouslyexploiting the warm surface waters during summer stratification. In the more eutrophic lake, UV-B is a less important constraintin the vertical distribution of zooplankton. These differencesin the responses of zooplankton to natural UV-B radiation inlakes may alter their ecological interactions with food resources, predators and other environmental variables in the water column. 1Present address: Universidad Nacional del Comahue, Centro RegionalUniversitario Bariloche, CC 1336, (8400) Bariloche, Argentina 2Present address: National Academy of Engineering, 2101 ConstitutionAvenue, NW, Washington, DC 20418, USA  相似文献

Dark uptake of inorganic 14C by offshore plankton was measuredat two depths at 36 stations in the Atlantic Ocean from 52°Sto 26°N, mainly along 30°W. The samples were incubatedfor 2 h with and without inhibition of biological activity withHgCl2. In addition, six time course experiments were performed. The mean dark uptake rate varied from 0.68 to 4.82 (µmolC m–3 h–1 over the transect and showed a significantpositive relationship with chlorophyll a. The dark uptake wasusually >5% of the maximum photosynthetic capacity (Pm),and higher values relative to Pm were associated with low valuesof Pm and not with high absolute dark values. A linear relationshipbetween dark uptake and Pm was found with a background value(y-axis intercept) of 0.51 (µmol C m–3 h–1and a slope of 0.77% of Pm. A major fraction of the dark signal,66–80% of the total signal, persisted in bottles treatedwith HgCl2, indicating that most of the dark signal was independentof biological activity. Time course experiments showed a lineardark uptake with time for the first hours, whereafter the uptakeceased. At stations with low concentrations of inorganic nitrogen[>1 (µmol (NH4++NO3)], a second stage was observedafter 3–8 h, probably due to an increase in bacterialactivity. The results suggest three mechanisms for the darkvalue in short-term incubations in oligotrophic waters. A backgroundvalue independent of biomass and incubation time which was thedominant part of the dark signal in samples with very low phytoplanktonbiomass (>0.3 p-g Chi a 1"). Another important part was residualsof 14C associated with plankton, probably adsorbed to compoundsinside the cells. This fraction was dominant in short-term incubationsat chlorophyll concentrations >0.3 p.g Chi a H. Active uptakeby living cells (total minus ‘HgCl2 uptake‘) wasonly a minor part of the dark signal in short-term incubations, but dominated at longer incubation time (>3–9 h), probablydriven by an increase in bacterial activity. A significant enhancementof the non-photosynthetic uptake of 14C was observed in light, probably associated with a carbon-concentrating mechanism inphytoplankton or light stimulation of ß-carboxylationactivity. The results strongly suggest that dark values shouldbe subtracted from the light uptake. This correction is particularlyimportant when photosynthetic rates are low, e.g. at low lightor in short-term incubations where a time-zero background becomesa significant part of the total uptake in light. Bioluminescence of sound-scattering layers in the Gulf of Maine   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Submersible-based investigations of bioluminescence were conductedin sound-scattering layers (SSLs) in the Gulf of Maine, usingintensified video and dual-beam acoustic methods. Stimulatedbioluminescence in the SSLs was high (3–41 µW sr–1m–3 while spontaneous bioluminescence was not detected. The average intensity of individual bioluminescent sources inthe SSLs was 30–200 times greater than the intensity oflight emitters outside the SSLs. The two brightest sources ofbioluminescence were identified as the euphausiid, Meganyctiphanesnorvegica and the cydippid ctenophore, Euplokamis sp. Meganyctiphanesnorvegica formed a SSL within 50 m of the bottom during theday and migrated to the uppermost 30 m of the water column atnight, forming a near-surface SSL. Euplokamis sp., which producedexceptionally intense and long-lasting bioluminescent secretions, occurred within the near-bottom SSL in concentrations up to7 m–3. Our findings indicate that traditional methodsof identifying the primary light emitters in a region, basedon light measurements from net- or pump-captured organisms, may have underestimated the significant in situ bioluminescencepotential of euphausiids and gelatinous zooplankton. 3 Present address: NOAA/NURP/R-OR2, Silver Spring, MD 20910,USA  相似文献

Rates of CO2 and HCC3 fixation in cells of various Chlorellaspecies in suspension were compared from the amounts of 14Cfixed during the 5 s after the injection of a solution containingonly 14CO2 or H14CO3. Results indicated that irrespectiveof the CO2 concentration during growth, Chlorella vulgaris 11h and C. miniata mainly utilized CO2, whereas C. vulgaris C-3,C. sp. K. and C. ellipsoidea took up HCO3 in additionto CO2. Cells of C. pyrenoidosa that had been grown with 1.5%CO2 (high-CO2 cells) mainly utilized CO2, whereas those grownwith air (low-CO2 cells) utilized HCO3 in addition toCO2. Cells that utilized HCO3 had carbonic anhydrase(CA) on their surfaces. The effects of Diamox and CA on the rates of CO2 and HCO3fixation are in accord with the inference that HCO3 wasutilized after conversion to CO2 via the CA located on the cellsurface. CA was found in both the soluble and insoluble fractions;the CA on the cell surface was insoluble. Independent of the modes of utilization, the apparent Km (NaHCO3)for photosynthesis was much lower in low-CO2 cells than in high-CO2ones. The fact that the CA in the soluble fraction in C. vulgarisC-3 was closely correlated with the Km(NaHCO3) indicates thatsoluble CA lowers the Km. 1 Dedicated to the late Professor Joji Ashida, one of the foundersand first president of the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists. 4 On leave from Research and Production Laboratory of Algology,Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia. Time series of phytoplankton biomass and taxonomic compositionhave been obtained for the 3 years 1992, 1993 and 1994 in thenorthern part of the Southern Ocean (station Kerfix, 5040'S,6825;E) Autotrophic biomass was low throughout the year (<0.2mg m–3 except during a short period in summer when a maximumof 1.2 mg chlorophyll (Chl) a m– was reached. During winter, the integrated biomass was low (<10 mg m–2) and associatedwith deeply mixed water, whereas the high summer biomass (>20mg m–2) was associated with increased water column stability.During summer blooms, the >10 µ;m size fraction contributed60% to total integrated biomass. Large autotrophic dinoflagellates, mainly Prorocentrum spp., were associated with the summer phytoplankton maxima and accounted for >80% of the total autotrophcarbon biomass. In November and December, the presence of thelarge heterotrophic dinoflagellates Protoperidinium spp. andGyro dinium spp. contributed a high proportion of total carbonbiomass. During winter, the <10 µm size fraction contributed80% of total Chi a biomass with domination of the picoplanktonsize fraction. The natural assemblage included mainly nakedflagellates such as species of the Prasinophyceae, Cryptophyceaeand Prymnesiophyceae. During spring, picocyanobacteria occurredin sub-surface water with a maximum abundance in September of106 cells 1–1  相似文献

Shells from 14 populations of sphaeriid clams including Sphaeriumstriatinum, S. simile, Pisidium walkeri, Musculim partumeiumand M. iransversum were analyzed for organic carbon (µgCmg–1 shell), nitrogen (µg,N mg–1 shell) andCaCOs (%CaCO3 of total clam dry weight). Habitat waters wereassessed for total hardness (expressed as ppm CaCo3), ppm Ca,ppm Mg, conductivity (µmho) and suspended organic Carbon(µgCl–1). For all populations, shell organic C andN are positively correlated and there is an inverse relationshipbetween the amounts of shell CaCO3 and shell organic carbon.Trophic considerations give the best correlation with shelltype at the generic level of consideration since species ofMusculium are found at the opposite end of the trophic scale(eutrophic) from all other populations studied. For S. striatinum, the most extensively studied species, the amount of shell CaCO3is inversely related to water hardness. The selection of shellsin the Sphaeriidae is discussed in relation to structural-functionalneeds and habitat conditions 1 Present Address: Department of Biology, Syracuse University,Syracuse, New York 13210, U.S.A. 2 Present Address: Department of Zoology, Miami University,Oxford, Ohio 45056, U.S.A. The data of chlorophyll amounts in diverse bio-communities arecompiled and discussed with reference to matter production. The chlorophyll amount in euphotic zone of lakes and oceanswas less than 1 g/m2, mostly less than 0.1 g/m2. In phytoplanktonblooms it was ca. 0.1–1 g/m2. Large values of 5–20g/m2 were obtained in the outdoor mass cultures of Chlorella,in which the high population density and chlorophyll contentof the alga were observed. In terrestrial higher plant communitiesthe chlorophyll amount (ca. 1–10 g/m2) was usually higherthan in aquatic phytoplankton communities. The largest (13.3g/m2) was obtained with an evergreen gallery forest in Thailand. The chlorophyll amount of desert bio-community could be expectedto be as high as that in water blooms. The maximum chlorophyll amount in bio-communities seems to attainup to 20 g/m2 when the conditions are favorable. 1 Dedicated to Prof. H. TAMIYA on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
