Two primary parasitoids of the mealybug Rastrococcus invadens Williams, (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), Gyranusoidea tebygi Noyes and Anagyrus mangicola Noyes (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), were studied. Both primary parasitoids were capable of eliminating the mealybug host but on occasions the parasitoids went extinct before the mealybugs. Three of four parasitoids known to attack G. tebygi also attacked A. mangicola. The latter species was more heavily parasitized than the former, especially by the gregarious species Chartocerus hyalipennis Hayat. In competition experiments the presence of hyperparasitoids slightly slowed the speed of extinction of either the mealybug or the primary parasitoid. A. mangicola was heavily parasitized by C. hyalipennis and the primary went extinct while many suitable mealybug hosts were still available. There were two situations where the primary parasitoids were in direct competition; in the first G. tebygi was more successful than A. mangicola while the reverse was true for the second. It is likely that the superiority of either parasitoid would depend on particular conditions but the introduction of A. mangicola is unlikely to lessen the control being exerted in West Africa by G. tebygi.  相似文献

In 2003, the invasive fruit fly Bactrocera invadens Drew, Tsuruta & White (Diptera: Tephritidae) (Drew et al. 2005), of possible Sri Lankan origin, has been detected in the East and about 1 yr later in West Africa. In regular surveys in Benin and Cameroon covering 4 yr, samples from 117 plant species across 43 families have been obtained. Incubation of field-collected fruits demonstrate that in West and Central Africa (WCA) B. invadens is highly polyphagous, infesting wild and cultivated fruits of at least 46 species from 23 plant families with guava (Psidium spp.), mango (Mangifera spp.), and citrus (spp.), and the wild hosts tropical almond (Terminalia catappa L.), African wild mango (Irvingia gabonensis (Aubry-Lecomte) Baill.), and sheanut (Vitellaria paradoxa C.F.Gaertn.) showing the highest infestation index. B. invadens occurs in 22 countries of WCA with new records for Angola, Central African Republic, the Congo, DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Sierra Leone. Overall, the pest has spread across a North-South distance of ?5,000 km representing a contiguous area of >8.3 million km(2) within WCA. B. invadens has adapted to a wide range of ecological and climatic conditions extending from low land rainforest to dry savanna. Because of its highly destructive and invasive potential, B. invadens poses a serious threat to horticulture in Africa if left uncontrolled. Moreover, the presence of this quarantine pest causes considerable restrictions on international trade of affected crops.  相似文献

The distribution of Rastrococcus invadens among different host plants and the impact of the mealybug on mango growth were investigated on 2067 trees in three surveys across all the ecological zones of Benin. The first survey started in 1989, less than 1 year after the first release of the exotic parasitoid Gyranusoidea tebygi. Within 3 years, G. tebygi had colonized the entire area of infestation, and was found on practically all infested mango trees as well as other infested host plants. By 1991, the incidence of R. invadens on the secondary host plants had declined significantly. The percentage of infested mango trees declined from 31.0% in 1989 to 17.5% in 1991, highest populations being found in the coastal savanna. During the same period, the mean percentage of infested mango trees having indigenous predators declined from 42.3 to 20.9%. Average mealybug densities declined steadily from 9.7 females/48 leaves in 1989, with 3.2% of all mango trees having densities above 100 mealybugs, to 6.4 females/48 leaves in 1991, with 1.3% of all trees having densities above 100 mealybugs. In multiple regression analyses, based on 23 meteorological, agronomic and plant variables, the duration of the parasitoid's presence proved to be a major factor. It influenced mealybug population densities and sooty mould incidence, which, in turn, affected the production of new leaves. In all analyses, the impact of rainfall, for example, on the sooty mould or the mealybug was less important than the effect of G. tebygi. The present study demonstrates for the first time on a large scale the impact of G. tebygi on R. invadens and, indirectly, on its main host plant, mango.  相似文献

Life table data for Rastrococcus invadens and its introduced natural enemy Gyranusoidea tebygi were obtained in the field and in the laboratory. The mealybug population's potential rate of increase ranged from 0.066/day to 0.078/day. The potential for increase of the parasitoid was double that of its host. Seasonal fluctuations in abundance of R. invadens were followed from 1988 to 1992 on mango trees in southern Benin. The population density of R. invadens decreased during the rainy seasons and peaked during the dry seasons. Mealybug field sex ratios were extremely variable, and the impact of such variability on the mealybug's potential rate of increase was analyzed. The populations of the exotic encyrtid G. tebygi, introduced into Benin in 1988 for control of the pest, were synchronized with the host populations. The spatial patterns of parasitism distribution in relation to the host population density were either independent or directly density-dependent, both at the tree level and for larger zones. However, reducing the scale of analysis resulted in different types of relationships. The impact of predators was a minor factor in the population dynamics of the mealybug. Four of the six species of hyper-parasitoids attacking mealybugs parasitized by G. tebygi developed high populations. In the two orchards studied, mealybug populations eventually collapsed and disappeared. This fact is discussed as being an indication that the biological control of the mango mealybug by G. tebygi was achieved by non-equilibrium local dynamics, and should be evaluated in a meta-population perspective.  相似文献

Conidia of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides germinate and form infection hyphae on inoculated, immature mango but remain quiescent until fruit ripening. Antifungal resorcinols have previously been implicated for quiescence of C. gloesoporioides and Alternaria alternata on mango. This study revealed the presence of a mixture of several gallotannins with glycosidic linkages, including 1,2,3,4,6‐penta‐O‐galloyl‐β‐D‐glucopyranose, with significant antifungal activity in the unripe mango fruit peel. Gallotannin antifungal activity was greater in a cultivar resistant (295.8 mm2 inhibition) to anthracnose than in a susceptible (148.4 mm2 inhibition) cultivar. In both, the activity decreased with ripening but the decrease was 10% less in the resistant cultivar. Three recorcinols, 5‐pentadecylresorcinol, 5‐(12‐cis‐heptadecenyl)resorcinol, AR 21 and another resorcinol derivative were present in the unripe fruit peel and all declined during ripening, more significantly the 5‐(12‐cis‐heptadecenyl)resorcinol and AR 21. Mango latex, when drained out, separates into an oily and aqueous phase. The aqueous phase showed significant chitinase activity and the ability to digest conidia of C. gloeosporioides. The oily phase has previously been reported to contain resorcinols. Draining fruits of latex soon after harvest resulted in greater incidence and severity of anthracnose at ripe stage. Chitinase activity was less in the peel of fruits from which latex was drained. The evidence suggests that the resistance of unripe mango to C. gloeosporioides is because of an elaborate constitutive defence system comprising antifungal resorcinols, gallotannins and chitinases.  相似文献

This study investigated the impact of released exotic mango mealybug parasitoid Gyranusoidea tebygi on mango mealybug Rastrococcus invadens in Nigeria. Observations were also made on the occurrence of the mealybug on other host plants in the surveyed areas. The monitoring exercise started in 1991 about 2 years after the first release in Ibadan. By 1997 and 1998, G. tebygi was found to have crossed all agro-ecological barriers to colonize the entire area of infestation nationwide on mango as well as other host plants. During this period, the populations of R. invadens had greatly decreased from between 11.0 and 98.0 mealybugs per leaf in 1991 to between 0.0 and 18.2 mealybugs per leaf in 1998. This fall was attributed to the activities of the released parasitoid. At many sampling sites in 1998, mealybugs were virtually absent on both mango and other host plants. Predators that were observed during the survey, were the coccinellids: Exochomus promptus Weise, Chilocorus nigritus (F) and Nephus spp. Larvae of chrysopid species, Ceratochrysa autica (Walker) and Plesiochrysa sp. The hyperparasitoids reared from mummies were Marietta leopardina Motsch (Aphelinidae), Chartocerus hyalipennis Hayat and Chartocerus subaeneus (Forster) (Signiphoridea).  相似文献

The mango sudden death syndrome has become a serious threat to the mango industry and caused significant decline in mango production worldwide. The bark beetle Hypocryphalus mangiferae (Stebbing) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) has been suggested as a potential vector of the disease based primarily on field observations with little or no supporting empirical data. In this study, we investigated the role of infected mango trees in host attraction and colonization by H. mangiferae to determine if beetle attack and colonization contributes to the disease progression on mango trees. Initially, the role of various stress factors on beetle attraction and disease progression was assessed under lathe house conditions from 2008 to 2009. Results suggest that symptomatic or recently inoculated mango trees (without any obvious symptoms) are preferentially colonized by H. mangiferae. Although not significant, high numbers of beetles attacked stressed or wounded mango trees, compared to healthy or dead mango trees. Disease symptoms after beetle colonization, such as bark splitting, wilting and oozing, were further evaluated. These symptoms showed positive correlation with the degree of disease severity and host plant condition. Furthermore, two fungi, Ceratocystis fimbriata and Lasiodiplodia theobromae, were frequently isolated from the beetle and beetle-colonized trees. Based on these findings, they suggests that H. mangiferae can vector multiple fungi associated with mango sudden decline disease and play a significant role in outbreaks of this disease.  相似文献

Colletotrichum spp. cause anthracnose in various fruits post‐harvest and are a particularly important problem in tropical and subtropical fruits. The disease in fruits of avocado, guava, papaya, mango and passion fruit has been reported to be caused by C. gloeosporioides, and in banana by C. musae. In subtropical and temperate crops such apple, grape, peach and kiwi, the disease is caused by C. acutatum. The variation in pathogenic, morphological, cultural and molecular characteristics of Brazilian isolates of Colletotrichum acutatum Simmonds and isolates from post‐harvest decays of avocado, banana, guava, papaya, mango and passion fruit was evaluated. The fruits were inoculated with mycelium of C. acutatum, Colletotrichum spp. and C. musae on a disc of potato dextrose agar. The morphological, cultural and molecular characteristics studied were conidia morphology, colony growth at different temperatures, colony coloration and PCR with primers CaInt2 and ITS4 for C. acutatum and CgInt and ITS4 for C. gloeosporioides. C. acutatum was pathogenic to avocado, guava, papaya, mango and passion fruit, but it was not pathogenic to banana. The morphological, cultural and molecular studies indicated that the avocado, papaya, mango and passion fruit isolates were C. gloeosporioides. The natural guava isolate was identified as C. acutatum, which had not been found previously to produce anthracnose symptoms on guava in Brazil.  相似文献

Mango leafhoppers that feed on inflorescences and young shoots of mango (Mangifera indica L.) were found mycotized under natural conditions in Bangalore, India. Isolation and characterisation of the etiological agents by sequencing of the Translation Elongation Factor-1α gene, revealed 99% identity with the plant pathogenic fungus Fusarium proliferatum. This is an early report on the Fusarium associated entomopathogenicity in different mango leafhopper species.  相似文献

Six microsatellite loci that were isolated from a microsatellite‐enriched genomic library of mango (Mangifera indica) along with their specific primer sets were each characterized by using 36 cultivars collected mainly in Thailand. The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0 to 0.83 and from 0.29 to 0.73, respectively. The number of putative alleles are two to six. Three of the six alleles have frequencies of over 75%. The high frequency may be attributed to the bias in the origin of cultivars. Among 36 mango cultivars tested, 29 cultivars showed a unique pattern by six primer sets, whereas seven cultivars cannot be identified because of genotype similarities. This suggests the potentials for identification of mango cultivars by microsatellite markers.  相似文献

Aim This study aims to elucidate the phylogeography of the murid rodent Praomys misonnei and to document whether or not rain forest refugia and rivers structure patterns of diversity within this species. Location Tropical Africa, from Ghana to Kenya. Methods Patterns of genetic structure and signatures of population history (cytochrome b gene) were assessed in a survey of 229 individuals from 54 localities. Using maximum likelihood, Bayesian, network and genetic structure analyses, we inferred intra‐specific relationships and tested hypotheses for historical patterns of gene flow within P. misonnei. Results Our phylogenetic analyses reveal a strong phylogeographical structure. We identified four major geographical clades within P. misonnei: one clade in Ghana and Benin, a Nigerian clade, a West Central African clade and a Central and East African clade. Several subclades were identified within these four major clades. A signal of population expansion was detected in most clades or subclades. Coalescence within all of the major clades of P. misonnei occurred during the Middle Pleistocene and/or the beginning of Late Pleistocene. Main conclusions Our results suggest a role for both Pleistocene refugia and rivers in structuring genetic diversity in P. misonnei. This forest‐dwelling rodent may have been isolated in a number of forest fragments during arid periods and expanded its range during wetter periods. Potential forest refugia may have been localized in Benin–Ghana, south‐western Cameroon, southern Gabon, northern Gabon and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo–western Uganda. The Niger and/or the Cross Rivers, the Oubangui‐Congo, Sanaga, Ogooue and/or Ivindo Rivers probably stopped the re‐expansion of the species from relict areas.  相似文献

Introduction – The consumption of new exotic fruits, with their high nutritional and sensory value, has significantly increased in the past few years. Among the tropical fruits durian (Durio zibethinus Murr.) is less known than mango (Mangifera indica L.) and avocado (Persea americana). It has been shown that durian, mango and avocado possessed high nutritional and bioactive properties, but these data were determined using different methods. In order to obtain reliable results we investigated samples of durian, mango and avocado of the same stage of ripeness and unified methods were used for determination of the antioxidant potential. As far as we know, no results of such comparative investigation of three tropical fruits (durian, mango and avocado) and the use of such tests for phytochemical control have been published. Objective – Lyophilised durian, mango and avocado samples harvested in 2008 in Thailand and Israel were investigated. Methodology – The contents of crude protein, fat, carbohydrate, dietary fibre, total polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins and flavanols were determined by elemental analysis and UV spectroscopy. The presence of polyphenols (flavonoids and phenolic acids) in the investigated samples was studied by Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy and three‐dimensional fluorometry. Four complementary radical scavenging assays were used for antioxidant determination: ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2, 2‐azino‐bis (3‐ethyl‐benzothiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid) diamonium salt (ABTS?+), 1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl method (DPPH) and cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC). Chemometrical processing was used for statistical comparison of the fruits. Results – All spectrometric measurements were highly correlated. The contents of total fibre, proteins and fats were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in avocado, and carbohydrates were significantly lower in avocado (p > 0.05) than in the two other fruits. The wavelength numbers of FTIR spectra for three investigated fruits were in the same range (1700–600 cm?1) as for catechin and gallic acid, used as standards. One main peak could be easily observed at the approximate location of ex/em 275/305 nm and the other one at ex/em 350/430 nm in the methanol polyphenol extracts of investigated fruits in three‐dimensional fluorescence, in contour and cross fluorescence maps. Similarity was found between durian, mango and avocado in polyphenols (9.88 ± 1.0, 12.06 ± 1.3 and 10.69 ± 1.1, mg gallic acid equivalents/g dry weight, d.w.), and in antioxidant assays such as CUPRAC (27.46 ± 2.7, 40.45 ± 4.1 and 36.29 ± 3.7, µM Trolox equivalent (TE)/g d.w.) and FRAP (23.22 ± 2.0, 34.62 ± 3.4 and 18.47 ± 1.9, µM TE/g d.w.), respectively. The multisample median test between all possible pairs of groups is a Tukey–HSD type comparison and denotes the different groups in a case when a pair‐wise test is significant and its q statistical value is greater than the table q parameter. The multisample median test of FRAP values were chosen from the compared fruits triplets as similar or homogenous subsets durian and avocado. Conclusion – Nutritional and bioactive values of durian are comparable with these indices in mango and avocado. These fruits contain high, comparable quantities of basic nutritional and antioxidant compounds, and possess high antioxidant potentials. All fruits show a high level of correlation between the contents of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant potential. The methods used (three‐dimensional fluorescence, FTIR spectroscopy, radical scavenging assays) are suitable for bioactivity determination of these fruits. In order to receive best results, a combination of these fruits has to be included in the diet. The methods used are applicable for bioactivity determination in phytochemical analysis in general.   1. The mango seed weevil Sternochetus mangiferae (Fabricius) is distributed across the major mango-producing areas of the world and causes significant economic losses of mango fruit. Despite its importance as a crop pest, we have only limited information on the population genetics of the mango seed weevil.
  2. Here, we examined the genetic diversity of this important pest using specimens intercepted by Beijing Customs District P. R. in China from 41 countries and regions. We used segments of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and the nuclear gene elongation factor 1-alpha to examine population genetic structure in this species.
  3. Our results showed that genetic diversity is low in S. mangiferae, with a mean genetic distance of 0.095–0.14%. Other population genetic parameters also indicated a low level of genetic diversity among samples from a large geographic range. Analysis of molecular variance revealed little population genetic structure, and mismatch distribution analyses provided evidence of a population expansion, although other demographic metrics of population expansion were nonsignificant.
  4. We suggest that the observed low level of genetic diversity and population genetic structure in S. mangiferae supports the hypothesis that the population genetics of this species has been impacted by anthropogenic transportation of mangoes and weevils.

Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead) parasitoids were released by air on a weekly basis over 1600 ha of commercial mango orchards, backyard orchards, and patches of native vegetation, at a density of ca. 940 parasitoids/ha. Releases were made during 2 consecutive years, beginning at flower onset and lasting until the end of the production cycle. Two areas, 7 km apart, were compared. In one area parasitoids were released, whereas the other area was used as a control. During the 2nd year treatments were reversed. Fruit was sampled in commercial mango orchards and in backyard orchards to assess levels of parasitism in fruit fly larvae. Highly significant differences in percentage parasitism were found in release and control zones in backyard orchards. Furthermore, trapping results indicated that D. longicaudata releases were associated with ca. 2.7-fold suppression of Anastrepha spp. populations in backyard orchards. Results suggest that suppression might be affected by environmental conditions and by the parasitoid:fly ratio achieved. Anastrepha obliqua McQuart populations were suppressed more effectively by use of parasitoids than those of Anastrepha ludens Loew, perhaps due to the type of host fruits used by each species. Augmentative parasitoid releases in marginal areas surrounding commercial orchards (backyard orchards, wild vegetation) can substantially suppress fly populations. Through this approach, the number of flies that later move into commercial orchards can be significantly reduced. Such a strategy, when combined with sound orchard management schemes, can allow growers to produce clean fruit without the need to resort to the widespread use of insecticides.  相似文献

Abstract .During the decade from 1984 to 1993, nine species of the Simulium damnosum complex of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) were identified from the area covered by the Onchocerciasis Control Programme. These were S. damnosum s.s., S. dieguerense, S. konkourense, S. leonense, S. sanctipauli, S. sirbanum, S. soubrense, S. squamosum, and S. yahense. Some of these species were found to consist of two chromosomal variant populations. These were S. konkourense‘Konkouré' and ‘Menankaya' forms, S. sanctipauli sensu stricto and‘Djodji' form, S. soubrense‘Chute Milo' and ‘Beffa' forms. The distribution of these twelve cytological taxa was assessed in relation to the two main vegetation zones of West Africa (forest and savanna), topography, river size and other factors. The range of each species was influenced by seasonal climatic changes in wind movement and river water level. The most widely distributed species were S. sirbanum and S. damnosum s.s., associated with savanna areas, recorded from all river basins. Simulium dieguerense was restricted mainly to Western Mali on the Rivers Bafing and Bakoye in the Senegal River basin. Simulium squamosum was identified from rivers draining mountainous areas in both the forest and savanna zones. Simulium yahense was found in small permanent rivers along a wide forested band parallel to the coast and was absent from the plains of Togo and Benin. Members of the S. sanctipauli subcomplex had restricted distributions except for S. sanctipauli s.s., which was widespread in large rivers of the forest zone from Sierra Leone to the Volta Lake in Ghana. Simulium soubrense‘Beffa' form occurred in Togo and Benin, S. soubrense‘Chutes Milo' form in Guinea, both ‘Konkouré' and ‘Menankaya' forms of S. konkourense occurred predominantly in Guinea and S. leonense in Sierra Leone. The relevance of the distribution maps and the importance of the data bank to vector control larvicidal operations are discussed.  相似文献

This case reports the successful management of a traumatic diaphyseal femoral fracture in an infant Western chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) from a rescue centre in Sierra Leone using a 2.4-mm intramedullary pin and two 2.7-mm String of Pearls locking plates. The postharvest anthracnose pathogen Colletotrichum gloeosporioides inciting latent or quiescent infection of mango was detected in early stages using immunoassay methods. Twenty‐five pathotypes isolated from different agroclimatic zones of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Pondicherry, India, revealed the variation in protein profile analysis (SDS‐PAGE). The polyclonal antibodies (PCA) were raised against the unfractioned mycelial protein (UMP) and a 40‐kDa polypeptide present in all pathotypes. Standardization of antigen and antiserum dilutions revealed that an antigen dilution of 1 : 200 (protein concentration of 20 μg/ml) and antiserum dilution of 1 : 100 (protein concentration of 40 μg/ml raised against UMP) and 1 : 200 (protein concentration of 20 μg/ml raised against 40 kDa polypeptide) was found to be optimum for the detection of anthracnose pathogen. Both antisera detected the Cgloeosporioides antigen in enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), dot immunobinding assays (DIBAs) and Western blots. The specificity in reaction was compared by isolating other Colletotrichum spp. from various hosts viz., Clindemuthianum (beans), Cfalcatum (sugarcane), Cmusae (banana), Ccapsici (chillies) and Botryodiplodia theobromae (mango). The antisera generated against UMP revealed the cross‐reaction with other host isolates and mango stem end rot pathogen (B. theobromae). The PCA raised against 40‐kDa polypeptide exhibited the specific reaction with Cgloeosporioides isolates in all the immunoassay techniques. By utilizing both PCA, the presence of latent infection was observed in healthy‐looking leaves, flowers and fruits in orchard conditions. The fruit tissues recorded high absorbance values followed by flowers and leaves in all the detection methods. The ELISA technique was also useful in assessing the pathogen inoculum at various biocontrol formulations sprayed mango trees under field conditions. The fluorescent pseudomonad strains mixture (KFP1 + FP7) amended with chitin sprayed at 30‐day intervals revealed the significant reduction in pathogen load than other formulations and unsprayed control.  相似文献

We report here on the development and characterization of 15 microsatellite loci isolated from Mangifera indica L. These markers were evaluated using 59 Florida cultivars and four related species from the USDA germplasm collection for mango. Two loci were monomorphic and 13 polymorphic, with two to seven alleles per locus. Four loci departed significantly from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and have significant heterozygote deficiency. Nine loci exhibited significant linkage disequilibrium. Cross‐species amplification was successful in four related species. These loci are being used to investigate patterns of genetic variation within M. indica and between closely related species.  相似文献

The Upper Guinean Forests of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia contain high levels of freshwater biodiversity. The Guinean Range and associated Fouta Djallon highlands separate two biogeographical provinces in the region and served as a refugium during past climatic fluctuations. While many species of freshwater fishes are restricted to one biogeographical province or the other, some are reported to occur on both sides of the divide. Here, we examine the molecular and morphological diversity of an endemic small African barb, Enteromius foutensis, reported to occur in both provinces. This integrative analysis revealed unrecognized diversity and suggests recent, or ongoing, events that facilitated geodispersal and subsequent divergence in the region. The molecular analysis revealed three divergent and well‐supported populations within E. foutensis. Accounting for allometric shape variation allowed us to observe diagnostic morphological differences among the populations. Enteromius foutensis sensu stricto is restricted to the Little Scarcies drainage in Guinea and northern Sierra Leone. Our study revealed two candidate species distinct from E. foutensis. One is likely a narrow endemic restricted to a small area in the Konkouré River basin; the other candidate species inhabits the upper Senegal and Gambie River drainages.
