The spatial distribution and sampling of Aeneolamia varia saccharina and Aeneolamia postica jugata were investigated using Taylor's Power Law as the distribution model. A. v. saccharina nymphs were aggregated whereas the adults were distributed at random. In contrast, both the nymphs and adults of A. p. jugata were slightly aggregated.The sizes of simple random samples required to give population estimates with known levels of error, and the levels of error generated by sample sizes commonly used in control schemes or proposed for ecological studies, are illustrated.Exact power transformations are given. Of the common transformations, logarithms are appropriate for counts of A. v. saccharina nymphs and square roots for A. v. saccharina adults and both stages of A. p. jugata.
Zusammenfassung Die räumliche Verteilung und die Stichproben-Eigenschaften der Larven und Imagines von Aeneolamia varia saccharina und A. postica jugata, Kardinalschädlinge des Zuckerrohrs auf Trinidad bzw. Belize, wurden mit Hilfe von Taylor's Potenzgesetz als Modellverteilung untersucht.Bei A. v. saccharina wurde für die Larven zwischen den Bülten eine haufenweise Verteilung gefunden, während die Erwachsenen zwischen den Stengeln zufällig verteilt sind. Dagegen war die Verteilung zwischen den Entnahmestellen der Larven und Adulten von A. p. jugata klumpenförmig. Die biologische Bedeutung dieser Verteilungen wird diskutiert.Es werden Kurven dargestellt, welche die näherungsweise Größe von einfachen Zufallsstichproben angeben, die zur Schätzung mit bekannter Irrtumswahrscheinlichkeit über einen Bereich von Populationsdichten erforderlich sind. Andere Kurven verdeutlichen die Stufen der Irrtumswahrscheinlichkeit, die von bestimmten Stichprobenumfängen erzeugt werden, wie sie gewöhnlich in Bekämpflungsverfahren benutzt oder für Lebenserwartungsuntersuchungen vorgeschlagen werden.Für die Berechnung beider Arten werden genaue fraktionierte Potenzfunktionen angegeben. Von den üblichen Transformationen sind Logarithmen für die Zählungen von a. v. saccharina-Larven und Quadratwurzeln für die Erwachsenen von A. v. saccharina sowie beide Stadien von A. p. jugata geeignet.

Abstract. 1. Field observations on the distribution of Philaenus spumarius (L.) on pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa) showed that the range of feeding sites exploited increased with instar. Development of trichomes, depth of xylem elements, and tissue hardness were measured as possible factors determining the suitability of sites on food plants.
2. Spittlebugs caged outside their normal feeding sites experienced difficulty feeding. Experimental removal of trichomes showed that trichomes prevented younger instars from feeding on the stem. The depth of the xylem elements and tissue hardness were not significant barriers to feeding near the stem apex.
3. By caging fourth and fifth instar nymphs at increasing distances below the terminal bud on A.margaritacea stems, we showed feeding ability declined with distance below the apex, and feeding was more restricted in fourth compared to fifth instars. A similar decline was demonstrated in experiments with fifth instars on M.sativa.
4. On A.margaritacea, this restriction was associated with increasing tissue hardness of the stem with distance from the apex and the presence of trichomes in regions with hard tissues. On M.sativa the associated barriers were a combination of tissue hardness and reduction in the availability of xylem vessels in the penetrable region of the stem. Although the tissues impeding stylet penetration differed in the two hosts, the critical factor in both species was the increase in the amount of lignification of those tissues at increasing distances from the terminal bud.  相似文献

The efficiency of amino acid, organic acid and sugar metabolism was quantified for adult Homalodisca coagulata (Say) (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) by comparing chemical profiles of xylem fluid (food source) and insect exudate. Leafhoppers were confined in Parafilm® sachets to stems of 4 host plants: [Baccharis halimifolia (L.), Lagerstroemia indica (L.), Prunus salicina (Lindl.), Prunus persica (L.), Batsch]. Insect feeding rates (0.09–0.27 ml h–1), exudate osmolarity (7.8–12.8 mM) and exudate composition (mainly inorganic entities) were characteristic of a xylem feeder. Total organic solute concentration in the xylem fluid of B. halimifolia, L. indica, P. salicina and P. persica was ca. 9.4, 13.8, 5.5 and 1.8 mM, respectively. Nineteen protein amino acids, 7 organic acids and 3 or 4 sugars were identifid in the xylem fluid. Total amino acids, organic acids and sugars were metabolized with ca. 99% efficiency. Glutamine, asparagine, arginine and citric, malic and succinic acids, the predominant organic compounds in the xylem fluid of all four plant species, were metabolized with greater than 99% efficiency. Cysteine (51%), methionine (74%) and oxalic acid (77%) were metabolized with the lowest efficiency. The primary nitrogenous waste was NH inf4 sup+ ; uric acid or urea were not detected. Nitrogen retention was generally less than 60% of dietary nitrogen. High feeding rates, ammonotelism and an extremely high metabolic efficiency of organic compounds permit H. coagulata to subsist on the dilute and skewed chemical profile of xylem fluid.
Résumé L'efficacité du métabolisme des amino-acides, des acides organiques et des sucres a été quantifiée chez des H. coagulata Say (Hom. Cicadellidae) adultes, en comparant la composition chimique de la sève du xylème et du miellat des insectes. Les cicadelles ont été maintenues dans des sachets de parafilm avec des tiges de 4 plantes hôtes: Baccharis halimifolia L., Lagerstroemia indica L., Prunus salicina Lindl. et Prunus persica Batsch. Le taux de consommation (0,09 à 0,27 ml hr–1), l'osmolarité du miellat (7,8 à 12,8 mM) et la composition du miellat (principalement des éléments inorganiques) sont caractéristiques des consommateurs de xylème. Les concentrations organiques totales en soluté de la sève du xylème étaient respectivement: 9,4; 13,8; 5,5; et 1,8 mM chez B. halimifolia, L. indica, P. salicina et P. persica. 19 amino acides protéiques, 7 acides organiques et 3 ou 4 sucres ont été identifiés dans la sève du xylème. Les acides aminés, les acides organiques et les sucres ont été métabolisés dans leur ensemble avec une efficacité de 99%. La glutamine, l'asparagine, l'arginine et les acides citrique, malique et succinique,-les principaux composés organiques de la sève du xylème de ces 4 plantes,-ont été métabolisés avec plus de 99% d'efficacité. La cystéine (51%), la méthionine (74%) et l'acide oxalique (77%) ont été métabolisés avec une plus faible efficacité. Le déchet azoté primarie était NH inf4 sup+ ; l'acide urique et lurée n'ont pas été décelés. La fixation d'azote a été généralement inférieure à 60% de l'azote consommé. Des taux de consommation élevés, l'ammonotélisme et une efficacité extrêmement élevée du métabolisme des composés organiques permettent à H. coagulata de survivre malgré la composition chimique biaisée et la dilution de la sève du xylème.

Fiji disease (FD) of sugar cane caused by Fiji disease virus (FDV) is transmitted by the planthopper Perkinsiella saccharicida Kirkaldy (Hemiptera Delphacidae). FD is effectively managed by using resistant cultivars, but whether the resistance is for the vector or for the virus is unknown. This knowledge would help develop a rapid and reliable glasshouse-based screening method for disease resistance. Sugar cane cultivars resistant, intermediate, and susceptible to FD were screened in a glasshouse, and the relationship between vector preferences and FD incidence was studied. Cultivar preference by nymphs increased with an increase in cultivar susceptibility to FD, but the relationship between adult preference and FD resistance was not significant. There was a positive correlation between the vector population and FD incidence, and the latent period for symptom expression declined with the increase in the vector populations. FD incidence in the glasshouse trial reflected the field-resistance status of sugar cane cultivars with known FD-resistance scores. The results suggest that resistance to FD in sugar cane is mediated by cultivar preference of the planthopper vector.  相似文献

All nymphal stages and apterous adults ofCeratovacuna lanigera secreted droplets containing an alarm pheromone from their abdominal cornicles when stimulated with a pin. When fresh droplets on piece of filter paper were put near the aphids, 1st-instar nymphs originating from apterous adults attacked it, but the advanced instar nymphs and adults escaped from the spot. Nymphs and adults originating from alate adults showed escaping behavior only. These different responses strongly correlated with morphological differences, such as relative lengths of the frontal horns and legs. When a syrphid larva,Allograpta javana, was placed on a colony of aphids, many 1st-instar nymphs attacked it using their frontal horns. During the attack, these nymphs spontaneously secreted droplets and adhered them to the syrphid body. When these droplets were placed on the body, the syrphid larva was agressively attacked by additional 1st-instar nymphs.  相似文献

The bast scale Matsucoccus feytaudi is a specific pest of maritime pine, but the damage inflicted by the insect on the host trees is variable, ranging from no apparent effect to severe decline of the maritime pine stands. Rangewide variation of mitochondrial DNA among M. feytaudi populations was analysed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length-single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-RFLP-SSCP) analysis and the results compared with the genetic information already available for its host. Three main nonoverlapping lineages can be distinguished in M. feytaudi. The phylogeography of the pest population is clearly related to the history of its host. Most local associations could result from common evolution while others must be interpreted as intraspecific host shifts. Because the distribution of cultivated tree species is greatly influenced by humans, much may be learned concerning their genetic structure from the indirect study of their specific pests.  相似文献

The simultaneous assay of neutral sugars and amino sugars commonly found in glycoproteins is described. The automatic sugar analyzer used for the determination is based on the ion-exchange chromatography of sugar-borate complexes on a strong anion-exchange resin. The sugars are identified with the orcinol/sulfuric acid reagent. While less than 40 nmol of mannose, fucose, galactose, glucose, xylose, or arabinose is sufficient for analysis at least 200 nmol mannosamine, glucosamine, or galactosamine is required; acidic monosaccharides cannot be determined. The technique of sugar analysis is applied to structural studies on natural compounds, e.g. the monosaccharide composition of lichenan and the carbohydrate moiety of the glycoproteins ovomucoid and Collocalia mucoid.  相似文献

1. The free (physiological) amino acid profile in the brain tissue of Lepisma saccharina and Thermobia domestica (Thysanura, Lepismatidae) was investigated.2. Nitrogenous waste products (ammonia and urea) together constituted 28% of the total ninhydrinpositive compounds for both species.3. GABA accounted for 3% of the total ninhydrin-positive compounds in the brain of L. saccharina, and T. domestica.4. Glutamate comprised 7% of the total ninhydrin-positive compounds in the brain of L. saccharina, and 8% in T. domestica.5. The most abundant amino acids were alanine, proline, arginine and taurine.6. Honeydew of the lac insect, Kerria lacca is a clear watery fluid. By means of paper partition chromatography seventeen free amino acids and amides, viz., aspartic acid, asparagine, arginine, alpha and beta alanine, glycine, glutamic acid, histidine, lysine, leucine and or isoleucine, methionine, proline, serine, threonine, tyrosine, valine and possibly homoserine were identified in the honeydew of the mature female lac insect. The plant sap of Moghania macrophylla on which the insects were reared contained comparatively fewer amino acids.

Zusammenfassung Der Honigtau der begatteten weiblichen Lackschildlaus Kerria lacca (Kerr) wurde mit Hilfe zweidimensionaler Papierchromatographie auf Gehalt an freien Aminosäuren untersucht. Es wurden 17 freie Aminosäuren nachgewiesen: Asparaginsäure, Asparagin, Arginin, -und -Alanin, Glycin, Glutaminsäure, Histidin, Lysin, Leucin und (oder) Isoleucin, Methionin, Prolin, Serin, Threonin, Tyrosin, Valin und wahrscheinlich Homoserin. Außerdem erscheint ein nicht identifizierter Fleck (mit Rf-Wert 0,69 in Phenolwasser) etwas oberhalb des Methionins. Proteine und Peptide fehlten.Der Pflanzensaft von Moghania macrophylla (Willd.) O. Ktze., auf dem die Insekten gehalten wurden, enthielt vergleichsweise weniger Aminosäuren.


Recently it has been found by one of us (R.K.V.) that the generic name Laccifer Oken, which is presently being used for the lac insect with sp. lacca, is invalid and should be substituted by Kerria Targ., 1884. This change has been approved of by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature.  相似文献

Summary Changes in tissue contents of some free amino acidscharacteristic of the glutamate and aspartate pathways in tomato plants following increase in the concentration of nitrate or ammonium in the nutrient solution have been studied.An increase in ammonium produced a massive accumulation of glutamine both in the roots and in the shoot. Growth of Escherichia coli on glucosamine results in an induction of glucosamine 6-phosphate deaminase [2-amino-2-deoxy-d-glucose 6-phosphate ketol-isomerase (deaminating), EC 5.3.1.10] and a repression of glucosamine 6-phosphate synthetase (l-glutamine-d-fructose 6-phosphate aminotransferase, EC 2.6.1.16); glucose abolishes these control effects. 2. Growth of E. coli on N-acetylglucosamine results in an induction of N-acetylglucosamine 6-phosphate deacetylase and glucosamine 6-phosphate deaminase, and in a repression of glucosamine 6-phosphate synthetase; glucose diminishes these control effects. 3. The synthesis of amino sugar kinases (EC 2.7.1.8 and 2.7.1.9) is unaffected by growth on amino sugars. 4. Glucosamine 6-phosphate synthetase is inhibited by glucosamine 6-phosphate. 5. Mutants of E. coli that are unable to grow on N-acetylglucosamine have been isolated, and lack either N-acetylglucosamine 6-phosphate deacetylase (deacetylaseless) or glucosamine 6-phosphate deaminase (deaminaseless). Deacetylaseless mutants can grow on glucosamine but deaminaseless mutants cannot. 6. After growth on glucose, deacetylaseless mutants have a repressed glucosamine 6-phosphate synthetase and a super-induced glucosamine 6-phosphate deaminase; this may be related to an intracellular accumulation of acetylamino sugar that also occurs under these conditions. In one mutant the acetylamino sugar was shown to be partly as N-acetylglucosamine 6-phosphate. Deaminaseless mutants have no abnormal control effects after growth on glucose. 7. Addition of N-acetylglucosamine or glucosamine to cultures of a deaminaseless mutant caused inhibition of growth. Addition of N-acetylglucosamine to cultures of a deacetylaseless mutant caused lysis, and secondary mutants were isolated that did not lyse; most of these secondary mutants had lost glucosamine 6-phosphate deaminase and an uptake mechanism for N-acetylglucosamine. 8. Similar amounts of (14)C were incorporated from [1-(14)C]-glucosamine by cells of mutants and wild-type growing on broth. Cells of wild-type and a deaminaseless mutant incorporated (14)C from N-acetyl[1-(14)C]glucosamine more efficiently than from N[1-(14)C]-acetylglucosamine, incorporation from the latter being further decreased by acetate; cells of a deacetylaseless mutant showed a poor incorporation of both types of labelled N-acetylglucosamine.  相似文献

Abstract. The ratio of the concentration of honeydew total amino acids to total sugars in the honeydew of eight species of aphids, all feeding on tansy, Tanacetum vulgare (L.), was determined and correlated with honeydew production and ant‐attendance. The honeydew of the five ant‐attended aphid species [Metopeurum fuscoviride (Stroyan), Trama troglodytes (v. Hayd), Aphis vandergooti (Börner), Brachycardus cardui (L.), Aphis fabae (Scopoli)] was rich in total amino acids, ranging from 12.9 to 20.8 nmol µL?1 compared with the unattended aphid Macrosiphoniella tanacetaria (Kalt.) with only 3 nmol µL?1. Asparagine, glutamine, glutamic acid and serine (all nonessential amino acids) were the predominant amino acids in the honeydew of all species. The total concentration of amino acids in the phloem sap of tansy was much higher (78.7 nmol µL?1) then in the honeydew samples, and the predominant amino acids were glutamate (34.3%) and threonine (17.7%). A somewhat unexpected result was the finding that those aphid species with the highest total amino acid concentration in the honeydew always had the highest concentration of sugars. The lowest amino acid–sugar combined value was 104–28.8 nmol µL?1 in the non ant‐attended species M. tanacetaria, and the highest value was an average of 270–89.9 nmol µL?1 for the three most intensely attended aphid species M. fuscoviride, A. vandergooti and T. troglodytes. There is no evidence that any single amino acid or group of amino acids in the honeydew acted as an attractant for ant‐attendance in these eight aphid species. The richness of the honeydew (rate of secretion × total concentration of sugars), along with the presence of the attractant sugar melezitose, comprised the critical factors determining the extent of ant‐attendance of the aphids feeding on T. vulgare. The high total amino acid concentration in sugar‐rich honeydews can be explained by the high flow‐through of nutrients in aphids that are particularly well attended by ants.  相似文献

Several genera and species of spittlebugs (Homoptera: Cercopidae) are economic pests of Brachiaria spp. grasses in tropical America. To support current breeding programs aimed at obtaining multiple spittlebug resistance, we undertook a series of studies on antibiosis and tolerance as possible mechanisms of resistance to five major spittlebug species affecting Brachiaria spp. in Colombia: Aeneolamia varia (F.), Aeneolamia reducta (Lallemand), Zulia carbonaria (Lallemand), Zulia pubescens (F.), and Mahanarva trifissa (Jacobi). Four host genotypes, well known for their reaction to A. varia attack, were used to compare their resistance to other spittlebug species: CIAT 0654 and CIAT 0606 (susceptible) and CIAT 6294 and CIAT 36062 (resistant). CIAT 0654 and CIAT 36062 were used in antibiosis studies. Tolerance studies were conducted with CIAT 0654, CIAT 6294, and CIAT 36062. Sixty-five hybrid-derived clones were used to identify levels of multiple resistance to three spittlebug species. The levels of antibiosis resistance in CIAT 36062 clearly differed by spittlebug species and were classified as follows: very high for M. trifissa, high for A. varia and A. reducta, moderate for Z. pubescens, and absent for Z. carbonaria. Our results suggest the presence of true tolerance to Z. carbonaria in CIAT 6294 and CIAT 36062, true tolerance to Z. pubescens in CIAT 6294 and a combination of tolerance and antibiosis as mechanisms of resistance to Z. pubescens in CIAT 36062. Of the 65 hybrid clones tested with A. varia, A. reducta, and Z. carbonaria, 15 combined resistance to two species and three showed antibiosis resistance to all three spittlebug species.  相似文献

Surveys for sugarcane stem borers were undertaken in Ethiopia to determine the prevalence and distribution of these and their natural enemies in crops and indigenous host plants. Eldana saccharina Walker was not recovered from sugarcane, but was present in three indigenous wetland sedges, Cyperus papyrus, C. fastigiatus and C. dives in the southern, central and northern part of the country. The latter indigenous host plant was present in waterways adjacent to sugarcane on the commercial sugar estates. The tachinids Schembria eldanae Barraclough and Actia sp. were common parasitoids of E. saccharina larvae in these indigenous sedges. The braconid Dolichogenidea sp. was recovered from E. saccharina larvae in C. dives. Pathogens comprising Beauveria bassiana, Bacillus thuringiensis and Entomophthora sp., were found to be important mortality factors of E. saccharina larvae in the indigenous sedges. The occurrence of E. saccharina in Ethiopia is reported for the first time, and the host plant preferences of the borer and its indigenous natural enemies found during the surveys are recorded. In addition, its potential threat to sugarcane production in Ethiopia is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The amounts of amino acids in seed exudates were generally higher than in root exudates of the same plant. The spectra and relative abundance of amino acids in both plants were similar but they were generally more abundant in cowpea exudates than in sorghum. Glutamic acid and alanine were the most abundant amino acids in the seed and root exudates of both plants. The proportions of the amino acids in the seed exudates were comparable to that stored in the seeds. Many of the major amino acids identified in the exudates were also found to support thein vitro growth ofFusarium spp. isolated from the rhizosphere and rhizoplane. This suggests that the amino acids exuded might contribute signficantly to Fusaria nutrition and its consequent predominance around the root. The significance of this pathogenesis is also discussed.  相似文献
