The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in electromyographic activity of agonist and antagonist knee musculature between a maximal and a submaximal isokinetic fatigue protocol. Fourteen healthy males (age: 24.3 ± 2.5 years) performed 25 maximal (MIFP) and 60 submaximal (SIFP) isokinetic concentric efforts of the knee extensors at 60° s−1, across a 90° range of motion. The two protocols were performed a week apart. The EMG activity of vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL) and biceps femoris (BF) were recorded using surface electrodes. The peak torque (PT) and average EMG (aEMG) were expressed as percentages of pre-fatigue maximal value. One-way analysis of variance indicated a significant (p < 0.05) decline of PT during the maximal (45.7%) and submaximal (46.8%) protocols. During the maximal test, the VM and VL aEMG initially increased and then decreased. In contrast, VM and VL aEMG continuously increased during submaximal testing (p < 0.05). The antagonist (BF) aEMG remained constant during maximal test but it increased significantly and then declined during the submaximal testing. The above results indicate that agonist and antagonist activity depends on the intensity of the selected isokinetic fatigue test.  相似文献

Microcirculation in the upper portion of the trapezius muscle was measured percutaneously in a group of 16 healthy women of different ages by continuous laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) in relation to electromyography (EMG) during an endurance test. During the measurements the subject kept her arms straight and elevated at 45° in the scapular plane and held a 1-kg load in each hand as long as possible. This was followed by rest with the arms hanging and carrying no load. The 10-min recording period comprised 1-min initial rest followed by the endurance test and then recovery. Signal processing was done by computer on line. The LDF and root-mean-square (rms) EMG signals were normalized. Spectrum analyses of EMG mean power frequency (MPF) were performed. The amount of load produced was on average 2,267 (SD 939) N · m · s, i.e. shoulder torque × time expressed as Newton meter seconds, and the endurance time was 4.3 (SD 1.20) min. The rms-EMG as well as the LDF increased significantly during endurance, both when related to endurance time and to amount of load. The MPF showed no significant changes. The mean total increase in muscle blood flow was 175% of that recorded in the initial rest period. The average increase per each 10 s of contraction was 2.9%. Maximum was reached during the 1st min of recovery followed by a fall to the base level that was reached within 77 s on average. The amount of load produced and the blood flow increase was smaller than that found in a separate study of men, indicating a lower functional capacity. This may be of importance for the development of neck-shoulder disability in women.  相似文献

Electromyographic signals contain the information on muscle activity and have to be frequently averaged, compared, classified or details need to be extracted. A time–frequency analysis, based on wavelets, was previously presented. The analysis transformed an EMG signal into an EMG-intensity-pattern showing the intensities at any point in time for the frequencies filtered out by the wavelets. The purpose of the present study was:

1. to define and apply a new EMG-pattern-space for the analysis of EMG-intensity-patterns; and

2. to determine the variation of EMG-intensity-patterns while getting mildly fatigued by cycling on a cycle-ergometer.

The coordinates spanning the pattern space were principal components of the measured EMG-intensity-patterns. A point in pattern-space thus represented an EMG-intensity-pattern. Fatigue resulted in points moving along a line in pattern space. The line was characterized by an intercept at time 0 and a slope. Thus mild fatigue caused a shift from an initial intensity-pattern representing the intercept to a final intensity-pattern adding gradually larger amounts of the pattern representing the slope. The intensity-pattern of the slope revealed the physiologically important individual strategies for coping with mild fatigue. Changes were observed at different times and at different frequencies during the cycling movement.  相似文献

Ten females (25–50 years of age) performed isometric shoulder flexions, holding the right arm straight and in a horizontal position. The subjects were able to see the rectified surface electromyogram (EMG) from either one of two electrode pairs above the upper trapezius muscle and were instructed to keep its amplitude constant for 15 min while gradually unloading the arm against a support. The EMG electrodes were placed at positions representing a “cranial” and a “caudal” region of the muscle suggested previously to possess different functional properties. During the two contractions, recordings were made of: (1) EMG root mean square-amplitude and zero crossing (ZC) frequency from both electrode pairs on the trapezius as well as from the anterior part of the deltoideus, (2) supportive force, (3) heart rate (HR) and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), and (4) perceived fatigue. The median responses during the cranial isoelectric contraction were small as compared to those reported previously in the literature: changes in exerted glenohumeral torque and ZC rate of the isoelectric EMG signal of −2.81% · min−1 (P = 0.003) and 0.03% · min−1 (P= 0.54), respectively, and increases in HR and MAP of 0.14 beats · min−2 (P= 0.10) and 0.06 mmHg · min−1 (P= 0.33), respectively. During the contraction with constant caudal EMG amplitude, the corresponding median responses were −2.51% · min−1 (torque), 0.01% · min−1 (ZC rate), 0.31 beats · min−2 (HR), and 0.93 mmHg · min−1 (MAP); P=0.001, 0.69, 0.005, and 0.003, respectively. Considerable deviations from the “isoelectric” target amplitude were common for both contractions. Individuals differed markedly in response, and three distinct subgroups of subjects were identified using cluster analysis. These groups are suggested to represent different motor control scenarios, including differential engagement of subdivisions of the upper trapezius, alternating motor unit recruitment and, in one group, a gradual transition towards a greater involvement of type II motor units. The results indicate that prolonged low-level contractions of the shoulder muscles may in general be accomplished with a moderate metabolic stress, but also that neuromuscular adaptation strategies differ significantly between individuals. These results may help to explain why occupational shoulder-neck loads of long duration cause musculoskeletal disorders in some subjects but not in others. Accepted: 1 March 1997  相似文献

Subjects reporting neck/shoulder pain have been shown to generate less force during maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVC) of the shoulder muscles compared to healthy controls. This has been suggested to be caused by a pain-related decrease in voluntary activation (VA) rather than lack of muscle mass. The aim of the present study was to investigate VA of the trapezius muscle during MVCs in subjects with and without neck/shoulder pain by use of the twitch interpolation technique.Ten cases suffering from pain and ten age and gender matched, healthy controls were included in the study. Upper trapezius muscle thickness was measured using ultrasonography and pain intensity was measured on a 100 mm visual analog scale (VAS). VA was calculated from five maximal muscle activation attempts. Superimposed stimuli were delivered to the accessory nerve at peak force and during a 2% MVC following the maximal contraction.Presented as mean ± SD for cases and controls, respectively: VAS; 16.0 ± 14.4 mm and 2.1 ± 4.1 mm (P = 0.004), MVC; 545 ± 161 N and 664 ± 195 N (P = 0.016), upper trapezius muscle thickness; 10.9 ± 1.9 mm and 10.4 ± 1.5 mm (P = 0.20), VA; 93.6 ± 14.2% and 96.3 ± 6.0% (P = 0.29).In spite of significantly eight-fold higher pain intensity and ∼20% lower MVC for cases compared to controls, no difference was found in VA. Possible explanations for the reduction in MVC could be differences in co-activation of antagonists and synergists as well as muscle quality.  相似文献

Assessment of neuromuscular fatigue is essential for early detection and prevention of risks associated with work-related musculoskeletal disorders. In recent years, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) of surface electromyography (SEMG) has been used to evaluate muscle fatigue, especially during dynamic contractions when the SEMG signal is non-stationary. However, its application to the assessment of work-related neck and shoulder muscle fatigue is not well established. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to establish DWT analysis as a suitable method to conduct quantitative assessment of neck and shoulder muscle fatigue under dynamic repetitive conditions. Ten human participants performed 40 min of fatiguing repetitive arm and neck exertions while SEMG data from the upper trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles were recorded. The ten of the most commonly used wavelet functions were used to conduct the DWT analysis. Spectral changes estimated using power of wavelet coefficients in the 12–23 Hz frequency band showed the highest sensitivity to fatigue induced by the dynamic repetitive exertions. Although most of the wavelet functions tested in this study reasonably demonstrated the expected power trend with fatigue development and recovery, the overall performance of the “Rbio3.1” wavelet in terms of power estimation and statistical significance was better than the remaining nine wavelets.  相似文献

Existing research indicates that repetitive motions are strongly correlated with the development of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Resulting from the redundant degrees-of-freedom in the human body, there are variations in motions that occur while performing a repetitive task. These variations are termed motor variability (MV), and may be beneficial for reducing WMSD risks. To better understand the potential role of MV in preventing injury risk, we evaluated the effects of fatigue on MV using data collected during a lab-based prolonged, repetitive lifting/lowering task. We also investigated whether experienced workers used different motor control strategies than novices to adapt to fatigue. MV of the whole-body center-of-mass (COM) and box trajectory were quantified using cycle-to-cycle standard deviation, sample entropy, and goal equivalent manifold (GEM) methods. In both groups, there were significantly increased variations of the COM with fatigue, and with a more substantial increase in a direction that did not affect task performance. Fatigue deteriorated the task goal and made it more difficult for participants to maintain their performance. Experienced workers also had higher MV than novices. Based on these results, we conclude that flexible motor control strategies are employed to reduce fatigue effects during a prolonged repetitive task.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare the capability of a cluster-based exposure variation (C-EVA) with a conventional exposure variation analysis (EVA) to detect muscular adaptation in the shoulder joint to subsequent sessions of eccentric exercise (ECC). Eleven healthy subjects performed work with a computer mouse for 10 min at three instants, i.e., before, immediately after, and 24 h after ECC. The subjects repeated an identical procedure one week after the first session. Surface electromyography was recorded from descending and ascending part of the trapezius, deltoid anterior, and serratus anterior muscles. EVA and C-EVA were performed and their marginal distributions were extracted. A principal component analysis was applied to the marginal distributions of both EVA and C-EVA. Principal component difference was computed by subtraction of the corresponding principal components before the ECC from immediately after and 24 h after the ECC. The first component extracted from C-EVA revealed an interactive effect between the sessions of ECC and instants whereas this effect was absent using the conventional EVA. The current study highlights the importance of a multivariate approach to analyze the potentially important changes in muscular activity in response to the repeated bout effect.  相似文献

The winner of an international contest to find the world’s fastest drummer (WFD) can perform repetitive wrist tapping movements with one hand using a handheld drumstick at 10 Hz, much faster than the maximum tapping frequency of 5-7 Hz in the general population. The muscle activity facilitating this improved performance, however, has only recently been explored. The present study investigated the rise rate and timing variability of surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of wrist flexor/extensor muscles in the WFD, and compared them with those in two control groups: non-drummers (NDs) and ordinary drummers (ODs). The WFD showed more rapid EMG amplitude rise, earlier decline of EMG activity, and more stable muscle activation time than the NDs and ODs. In addition, there was a significant correlation between the EMG rise rate and the duration of drum training in the group of drummers (i.e., ODs and WFD). These results indicate that the 10-Hz performance of the WFD was achieved by a ‘sharper’ and ‘less noisy’ burst pattern of wrist muscles, and that drum training would have the effect to increase the speed of development of muscle tension.  相似文献

目的: 观察健康志愿者不同功率递增速率完成症状限制性极限心肺运动试验(CPET)对CPET峰值运动相关核心指标的影响,及运动中呼吸交换率(RER)的变化。以探讨不同功率递增速率对CPET峰值运动相关指标的影响。方法: 选择12名健康志愿者在一周内不同工作天随机完成中等适度程度(30 W/min)及比较低(10 W/min)和比较高(60 W/min)3种不同功率递增速率CPET。按标准方法比较CPET数据主要峰值运动核心指标:峰值运动时的摄氧量、二氧化碳排出量、负荷功率、呼吸频率、潮气量、分钟通气量、心率、血压和氧脉搏,运动持续时间和CPET各时段的RER。对三组不同功率递增速率下各个指标的差异进行组间两两比较。结果: 与中等适度功率递增速率组比较,比较低和比较高功率递增速率组的峰值功率分别显著地降低和升高((162.04±41.59)W/min vs (132.92±34.55) W/min vs (197.42±46.14) W/min, P<0.01);运动时间显著延长和缩短((5.69±1.33) min vs (13.49±3.43) min vs (3.56±0.76) min,P<0.01);峰值RER(1.27±0.07 vs 1.18±0.06 vs 1.33±0.08,P<0.01~P<0.05)与恢复期RER最大值(1.72±0.16 vs 1.61±0.11 vs 1.81±0.14,P<0.01~P<0.05)均显著降低和升高。结论: 不同功率递增速率CPET显著改变峰值运动时的功率、运动持续时间、峰值RER和恢复期最大RER。CPET规范化操作要选择个体化适合受试者的中等适度功率递增速率,而且也不能以某一固定的RER值作为保证安全、受试者达到极限运动和提前终止运动的依据。  相似文献

Colies are one of the phylogenetically oldest groups among the modern birds; the earliest finds are from about 35 million years ago. In states of energy deficiency they can undergo torpor during the night when metabolic rate and body temperature are decreased drastically to save energy (up to 90%). Here, we report the first measurements of heart rate (HR) by long-term telemetry, in seven individuals of blue-naped mousebirds (Urocolius macrourus); simultaneously and continuously metabolic rate (MR) was determined. HR at night was about 20% below the range of expected values (246/310 bpm). Mean oxygen pulse (O2 output/stroke) in normothermic birds was in a range of 0.019–0.020 ml O2/stroke; during torpor nights this value decreased significantly to 0.0086. Mean cardiac output ranged from 724 to 1214 ml blood/kg per min; in torpid birds this value fell to 400 ml blood/kg per min. Cardiac regulation of metabolic demand within an activity phase (day or night) is mainly achieved by chronotropy. Inotropy contributes at most 25% to the differences in MR between day and night (ca. 40%). Entry into torpor is brought about mainly by changes in HR (decrease from 240 to 90 bpm); after torpor levels have been reached, there is an increase in HR (to 200 bpm) and a sharp decrease (−53%) in stroke volume. This regulation by inotropy is also characteristic of arousal from torpor.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate whether isometric contraction of the right triceps brachii muscle, of maximal duration and at 25% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), would reduce mean fibre conduction velocity (CV) for the active motor units (MU). In addition to the cross-correlation of surface electromyograms (EMG) for CV determination, median frequency (fm) and root-mean-square amplitude (rms-amplitude) were calculated. The initial 5 min of the recovery of the three parameters was also investigated. The MVC were performed before and after the sustained contraction. Seven males-six in their twenties and one aged 43-participated in the investigation. Mean CV for the unfatigued muscle was 4.5 m.s-1, SD 0.38. On average, CV decreased less than 10% during the sustained contraction (P less than 0.05). The fm decreased almost linearly (46%) during the endurance time, while three quarters of the 250% increase in rms-amplitude took place during the last 50% of the contraction (P less than 0.001, both parameters). The MVC was reduced by 39% immediately after exhaustion (P less than 0.05). During the 1st min of recovery the rms-amplitude decreased by 50%, and the fm increased from 54% to 82% of the initial value (both P less than 0.05). No measurable simultaneous CV restitution occurred. A parallel 15% increase in fm and CV took place during the last 4 min of recovery (both P less than 0.001), while the amplitude remained constant. Since mean CV was essentially unchanged during the last 50% of the endurance time where large changes in fm and rms-amplitude occurred, factors supplementary to CV probably caused the striking changes in fatigue EMG, notably-MU recruitment, synchronization of MU activity, and lowering of MU firing frequencies. Nevertheless, during the last 4 min of recovery the entire increase in fm could be accounted for by the simultaneous increase in CV.  相似文献

The evolution of erect posture and locomotion continues to be a major focus of interest among paleoanthropologists and functional morphologists. To date, virtually all of our knowledge about the functional role of the back muscles in the evolution of bipedalism is based on human experimental data. In order to broaden our evolutionary perspective on the vertebral region, we have undertaken an electromyographic (EMG) analysis of three deep back muscles (multifidus, longissimus thoracis, iliocostalis lumborum) in the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and gibbon (Hylobates lar) during bipedal walking. The recruitment patterns of these three muscles seen in the chimpanzee closely parallel those observed in the gibbon. The activity patterns of multifidus and longissimus are more similar to each other than either is to iliocostalis. Iliocostalis recruitment is clearly related to contact by the contralateral limb during bipedal walking in both species. It is suggested that in both the chimpanzee and gibbon, multifidus controls trunk movement primarily in the sagittal plane, iliocostalis responds to and adjusts movement in the frontal plane, while longissimus contributes to both of these functions. In many respects, the activity patterns shared by the chimpanzee and gibbon are quite consistent with recent human experimental data. This suggests a basic similarity in the mechanical constraints placed on the back during bipedalism among these three hominoids. Thus, the acquisition of habitual bipedalism in humans probably involved not so much a major change in back muscle action or function, but rather an improvement in the mechanical advantages and architecture of these muscles.  相似文献

(1) Exercise-induced hyperthermia is associated with a gradual slowing of the electroencephalogram (EEG), an increase in perceived exertion (RPE) and a lowering of the cerebral perfusion.

(2) During exercise EEG changes were linearly correlated to core temperature (r2=0.67; P<0.05) and RPE (r2 =0.54, P<0.05), but manipulation of cerebral perfusion by voluntary breathing efforts and by CO2 inhalation did not alter RPE or EEG.

(3) In conclusion EEG changes with hyperthermic exercise are not a simple effect of the reduced cerebral perfusion but may relate to the fatigue that arises concomitantly with the increases in core and brain temperatures.  相似文献

We present a longitudinal map of three overlapping organizational trajectories developed by Latin American immigrants in the city of Toronto. We propose the concept of bridging and boundary work to specify how new (1) intersectional political identities and organizational agendas are constituted by Latin American feminist women and artists in the interstice of (2) country-of-origin and (3) mainstream pan-ethnic organizations. Boundary work occurs as activists with intersectional priorities carve out a distinct political agenda; the ‘out-group’ relations based on a shared sectoral focus constitute bridging work. Tracing changes in the local and transnational political opportunity structures, we consider how negotiations over resources, representation and agendas between these three Latin American organizational forms generate multi-directional political learning and socialization and the coexistence of different Latin American political cultures. We define political socialization as in-group and out-group encounters between political cultures understood as civic toolkits or ways of doing politics.  相似文献

The accuracy of the Kato-Katz technique in identifying individuals with soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections is limited by day-to-day variation in helminth egg excretion, confusion with other parasites and the laboratory technicians’ experience. We aimed to estimate the sensitivity and specificity of the Kato-Katz technique to detect infection with Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm and Trichuris trichiura using a Bayesian approach in the absence of a ‘gold standard’. Data were obtained from a longitudinal study conducted between January 2004 and December 2005 in Samar Province, the Philippines. Each participant provided between one and three stool samples over consecutive days. Stool samples were examined using the Kato-Katz technique and reported as positive or negative for STHs. In the presence of measurement error, the true status of each individual is considered as latent data. Using a Bayesian method, we calculated marginal posterior densities of sensitivity and specificity parameters from the product of the likelihood function of observed and latent data. A uniform prior distribution was used (beta distribution: α = 1, β = 1). A total of 5624 individuals provided at least one stool sample. One, two and three stool samples were provided by 1582, 1893 and 2149 individuals, respectively. All STHs showed variation in test results from day to day. Sensitivity estimates of the Kato-Katz technique for one stool sample were 96.9% (95% Bayesian Credible Interval [BCI]: 96.1%, 97.6%), 65.2% (60.0%, 69.8%) and 91.4% (90.5%, 92.3%), for A. lumbricoides, hookworm and T. trichiura, respectively. Specificity estimates for one stool sample were 96.1% (95.5%, 96.7%), 93.8% (92.4%, 95.4%) and 94.4% (93.2%, 95.5%), for A. lumbricoides, hookworm and T. trichiura, respectively. Our results show that the Kato-Katz technique can perform with reasonable accuracy with one day’s stool collection for A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura. Low sensitivity of the Kato-Katz for detection of hookworm infection may be related to rapid degeneration of delicate hookworm eggs with time.  相似文献

The effect of an acute temperature increase on the control of the heart of the Antarctic teleost Pagothenia borchgrevinki was examined. Heart rate was thermally independent over the range −1.2°C to 3°C, although increasing the temperature from −1.2°C to 3°C elicited a decrease in ventral aortic pressure. Administration of the muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine and the β-adrenoreceptor antagonist sotalol abolished the thermal independence of heart rate, with heart rate increasing at Q10=2. As temperature was increased from −1.2°C to 3°C, cholinergic tone on the heart also increased, from 44.6±4.2% to 70.0±8.4%. At the same time the adrenergic tone increased from 35.5±3.3% to 43.0±3.1%, but the effect on the heart was masked by the increase of cholinergic tone, leading to the thermal independence of heart rate.  相似文献

Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a secreted member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor family, and has previously been shown to regulate bone mass by inhibiting osteoclast differentiation and activation. Recent evidence indicates that OPG also plays a role in the vascular system, since ablation of the OPG gene in mice results in calcification of the aorta and renal arteries, and association has been found between serum levels of OPG and cardiovascular mortality. This study presents a novel single nucleotide polymorphism, a T/C transition located 129 bp upstream the TATA-box of the human OPG gene, detected by sequence analysis. The OPG genotype was determined by restriction fragment length polymorphism in a cohort consisting of 59 healthy subjects. The intima-media thickness (IMT) in the common carotid artery and maximal post-ischemic forearm blood flow (FBF) were investigated. Subjects with the CC genotype showed a significantly increased IMT (p<0.05) and a concommitantly reduced maximal FBF (p<0.01) as compared to those with the T allele. Thus, our results show that the polymorphism in the promoter region of OPG is associated with both vascular morphology and function in apparently healthy subjects.  相似文献
