Praziquantel at dosages of 10, 20 or 100 mg/kg of body weight was evaluated against metacercariae of Nanophyetus salmincola in chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). Ten salmon were used in each of four treated groups and 10 salmon were nontreated controls. Three wk after treatment, viability of metacercariae was determined by histologic evaluation, and by feeding the salmon to coyotes and subsequently determining the numbers of trematode eggs/g of feces and numbers of N. salmincola recovered at necropsy. Results of the experiment indicated that praziquantel at the dosages and routes of administration used was not effective against metacercariae in chinook salmon.  相似文献

Fatty acid and stable isotope analyses have previously been used to investigate foraging patterns of fish, birds, marine mammals and most recently cephalopod species. To evaluate the application of these methods for dietary studies in squid, it is important to understand the degree to which fatty acid and stable isotope signatures of prey species are reflected in the squids' tissue. Four groups of Lolliguncula brevis were fed on prey species with distinctly different fatty acid and stable isotope profiles over 30 consecutive days. One group of squid were fed fish for fifteen days, followed by crustaceans for a further fifteen days. A second and third group were fed exclusively on fish or crustaceans for thirty days. And a fourth group was fed on a mixture of fish and crustaceans for thirty days. Analysis of squid tissue showed that, after 10 days of feeding, fatty acid profiles of squid tended to reflect those of their prey. Squid that fed on a single prey type, i.e. fish or crustacean, showed only minor modifications in fatty acid proportions after the initial change and fatty acid profiles were clearly distinguishable between the two feeding groups. Shifts in fatty acid proportions towards respective prey profiles could clearly be observed in squid the diet of which was swapped after 15 days. Clear differences could also be seen in fatty acid profiles of squid feeding on a mixed diet with trends towards either fish or crustacean fatty acid signatures. Stable isotope signatures of squid tissues clearly distinguished between animals feeding on different diets and supported findings from fatty acid analysis, thus indicating both methods to be viable tools in feeding studies on squid species.  相似文献

Triplicate groups of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.), of initial mass 5 g, were fed one of three practical type diets for 64 weeks. The three diets differed only in the added oil and were 100% fish oil (FO; diet A), 40% FO/60% vegetable oil blend (VO; diet B) where the VO blend was rapeseed oil, linseed oil and palm oil in the ratio 10/35/15 by weight and 40% FO/60% VO blend (diet C) where the ratio was 24/24/12 by weight. After final sample collection the remaining fish were switched to a 100% FO finishing diet for a further 20 weeks. After 64 weeks fish fed 60% VO diet B had significantly lower live mass and liver mass than fish fed diets A and C although SGR, FCR and length were not different between groups. There were no differences in any of the above parameters after either 14 or 20 weeks on the FO finishing diet. Fatty acid compositions of flesh were correlated to dietary fatty acids although there was selective retention of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3; DHA) regardless of dietary input. Inclusion of dietary VO resulted in significantly reduced flesh levels of DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3; EPA) while 18:1n-9, 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 were all significantly increased in fish fed the 60% VO diets. Fatty acid compositions of liver showed broadly similar changes, as a result of dietary fatty acid composition, as was seen in flesh. However, the response of flesh and liver to feeding a FO finishing diet was different. In flesh, DHA and EPA values were not restored after 14 or 20 weeks of feeding a FO finishing diet with the values in fish fed the two 60% VO diets being around 70% of the values seen in fish fed FO throughout. Conversely, and despite liver DHA and EPA levels being reduced to only 40% of the value seen in fish fed 100% FO after 64 weeks, the levels of liver DHA and EPA were not significantly different between treatments after feeding the FO finishing diet for 14 weeks. However, a 200 g portion of sea bass flesh, after feeding the experimental diets for 64 weeks followed by a FO diet for 14 weeks, contained 1.22 and 0.95 g of EPA + DHA for fish fed FO or 60% VO, respectively. Therefore, sea bass grown for most of the production cycle using diets containing 60% VO can still contribute a significant quantity of healthy n-3 HUFA to the human consumer.  相似文献

The supply of larvae is a major determinant of population and community structure in coral reef fishes. However, spatial and temporal variation in condition (i.e. quality) of potential recruits, as well as their density (i.e. quantity), may influence survival and growth of juveniles. We conducted an experiment to test whether recent feeding history could affect growth, condition and post-recruitment survival in a Caribbean damselfish, Stegastes partitus. Fish were collected soon after settlement, and fed either low or high rations in aquaria for 7 days. Fish fed the high ration grew faster in aquaria and were in a better condition (higher total lipids and Fulton’s condition factor) at the end of the feeding period. Subsequently, we released 50 fish in 25 pairs (one fish subjected to low rations, the other to high rations) on a Bahamian coral reef and monitored survival for 10 days. Survivorship of high-ration fish was double that of low-ration fish (80 vs 40% over 10 days). However, low-ration fish that survived 10 days were of similar condition and grew at similar rates to high-ration fish, suggesting that short-term ration differences may not persist in surviving fish. Laboratory experiments showed that low-ration fish were taken by piscivorous fishes before high-ration fish, indicating that differential predation may account for survival differences. This study highlights the potential of feeding history and condition to affect the relationship between patterns of larval arrival at reefs, and subsequent juvenile and adult population densities. Two feeding experiments were conducted to evaluate the growth and survival rates of tench Tinca tinca L. larvae when initially fed with a combination of three different brands of Artemia nauplii under two conditions: (A) in the laboratory and (B) on a commercial farm. At the same time, a protozoan culture of the freshwater ciliate Colpoda cucullus was additionally tested in one of the experiments to possibly enhance the initial hunting behaviour of the larvae. The larvae were fed every 4 h from the onset of exogenous feeding up to 14 days of age. Three types of commercial Artemia products, mainly differing in size and high unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) content, were used. One group was fed with C. cucullus as a starter. The different combinations of Artemia nauplii were used to evaluate possible effects on larval growth. The final growth at 26.3 °C, expressed in length and weight, did not show significant differences, suggesting the use of the most economically feasible Artemia strain studied. The experiments confirmed that using smaller prey during the first 2 days of feeding increases their survival rate, although the mean final survival rate was high (89%). In the experiment carried out at the commercial fish farm facilities, experimental groups were also fed with Artemia nauplii, using the EG type either enriched or not enriched with HUFA. Again, one of the groups was offered the ciliate C. cucullus as initial feed. Final growth showed significant differences when using Colpoda culture as a starter feed, although this test resulted in the lowest survival rate (69%), indicating that further studies on the management of its culture should be undertaken to improve the applicability of the technique. Abstract. The ability of adult Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) to retain viable Ehrlichia risticii (Rickettsiaceae), the aetiologic agent of Potomac horse fever (PHF), and mechanically transmit the pathogen from citrated bovine blood artificially infected with E.risticii to susceptible mice was studied. Viable E. risticii were found in the digestive tract of S.calcitrans 3h after the flies had engorged to repletion on infected blood; however, no E. risticii were detected in flies ≥2 days after feeding. Subsequently, groups of S.calcitrans were fed for 20 s on infected blood, then fed to repletion on mice 30, 60,130, 180 or 220 min after having feeding interrupted. Mice displayed no clinical signs of PHF and did not produce anti- E. risticii antibodies when assayed 30 days after S. calcitrans had fed. Although S.calcitrans were able to harbour viable E.risticii for at least 3h, transmission of the disease agent to susceptible mice during interrupted feeding was not demonstrated under these experimental conditions.  相似文献

Terrestrial plant resources are increasingly used as substitutes for fish meal and fish oil in fish feed in order to reduce the reliance of aquaculture on marine fishery resources. Although many studies have been conducted to assess the effects of such nutritional transition, no whole breeding cycles of fish fed diets free from marine resources has been reported to date. We therefore studied the reproductive performance of trout after a complete cycle of breeding while consuming a diet totally devoid of marine ingredients and thus of n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFAs) that play a major role in the formation of ova. Two groups of female rainbow trout were fed from first feeding either a commercial diet (C, marine and plant ingredients), or a 100% plant-based diet (V, blend of plant proteins and vegetable oils). Livers, viscera, carcasses and ova were sampled at spawning and analyzed for lipids and fatty acids. Although the V-diet was devoid of n-3 LC-PUFAs, significant amounts of EPA and DHA were found in livers and ova, demonstrating efficient bioconversion of linolenic acid and selective orientation towards the ova. Some ova were fertilized to assess the reproductive performance and offspring survival. We observed for the first time that trout fed a 100% plant-based diet over a 3-year breeding cycle were able to produce ova and viable alevins, although the ova were smaller. The survival of offspring from V-fed females was lower (-22%) at first spawning, but not at the second. Our study showed that, in addition to being able to grow on a plant-based diet, rainbow trout reared entirely on such a diet can successfully produce ova in which neo-synthesized n-3 LC-PUFAs are accumulated, leading to viable offspring. However, further adjustment of the feed formula is still needed to optimize reproductive performance.  相似文献

When Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus from two diVerent stocks were fed live Neomysis integer , the upper thermal limits for feeding and growth were established in the range 21·5–21·8° C. These critical temperatures might have been underestimates, because fish tend to show increased sensitivity to handling at high experimental temperatures. In the second experiment, the proportion of feeding undisturbed charr from four stocks decreased initially as temperature was raised in steps from 18 to 22° C. At the lower temperatures, 18 and 20) C, almost all fish resumed feeding, but the recovery time was longer and more fish ceased to feed at 20) C than at 18° C. When the temperature was increased to 21° C, 50% of the fish ceased feeding permanently, and all fish ceased feeding within 2 days at 22° C. It is concluded that 0+ charr cease to feed and grow at c .21·5) C and that the critical temperatures for feeding and growth coincide.  相似文献

Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larvae established first feeding 3 days after hatching (DAH) at c . 17° C. Non-fed fish reached irreversible starvation at age 5 DAH. Non-fed fish showed similar feeding rate and feeding intensity as the fed fish when they were provided with prey before 5 DAH, after which the starved larvae did not feed even when prey became available. None of the six morphological measurements examined (total length, body height, eye height, head height, gut height and myotome height) showed significant differences between the non-fed and fed larvae until 5 DAH. Normal development continued only in the fed group, and the non-fed larvae showed reverse growth or body collapse after 5 DAH. Owing to the shrinkage and collapse at the top of head due to starvation, head height could be a sensitive indicator of starvation in Japanese flounder larvae. In the fed treatments, high mortality occurred from first feeding (3 DAH) to irreversible starvation (5 DAH), accounting for about two-thirds to three-quarters of the overall mortality (46–52%) throughout the experiments. This mortality was not prey density or larval density dependent. Mortality during the same period in the non-fed larvae accounted for about a third of the overall mortality (100%).  相似文献

Three isocaloric diets with different fat composition were fed to rats for seven weeks after the production of nephrotic syndrome by adriamycin. The effects of feeding 3% and 14% fish oil were compared with those of feeding beef fat. At the fourth week of feeding the levels of triglycerides and cholesterol were lower in both fish oil fed groups. At the seventh week these levels, and the LDL cholesterol, were lower only in the 14% fish oil group. In rats fed beef fat, but not in those fed fish oil, there was a striking positive correlation of the four-week serum triglycerides and cholesterol with the seven-week serum creatinine level and with the degree of glomerular hyalinosis and endothelial swelling. The favorable effects of fish oil feeding on serum lipids may have a protective effect on the development of glomerular damage.  相似文献

A factorial experiment was designed to examine the effect on compensatory growth (CG) of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus fed diets containing different protein and lipid levels under normal and temporally restricted feeding regimes. Four diets were formulated to contain either 30% or 36% crude protein, and 5% or 11% crude lipid. Triplicate replicates of each treatment were assigned to 24 150‐L tanks (20 fish/tank density). Fish (mean initial weight ± SD = 8.79 ± 0.34 g) were then fed either the normal feeding regime (thrice daily to apparent satiation) or the restricted regime (1 day feed deprivation followed by 3 days of feeding to apparent satiation) over a 44‐days study period. Fish receiving a diet under the restricted regime achieved weight gains (WG) comparable to fish consuming the diet containing 30% protein and 5% lipids under the normal feeding regime. Fish maintained on the restricted feeding regime exhibited reduced feed intake (FI), WG, feed efficiency ratio (FE), protein efficiency rate (PER) and hepatosomatic index versus fish on the normal feeding regime, except WG in fish fed the diet with 30% protein and 5% lipids. However, the resultant FI (85%~94%) was higher than the excepted 75% intake when fish were subjected to the restricted regime. Feeding 11% lipid diets led to improved FI, WG, FE, and PER compared to feeding the 5% lipid diets. Increased FI, WG, and FE, but reduced PER were observed in fish fed with 36% protein versus fish fed 30% protein. Fish receiving the 36% protein diets had lower whole‐body moisture and ash contents, but elevated whole‐body protein and lipid contents compared to those receiving the 30% protein diets. Whole‐body moisture contents were lower, but whole‐body protein, lipid and ash contents were higher in fish fed 11% lipid diets than in fish fed 5% lipid diets. There was an increase in whole‐body moisture content, but a decrease in protein and lipid content in response to the restricted feeding regime. Ash content was not affected by the feeding regime. The present study shows that Nile tilapia fed diets subjected to a restricted feeding regime exhibited growth comparable to those fed the diet at 30% protein and 5% lipid levels under a normal feeding regime. This positive effect was more pronounced in diets at a high protein level or in a combination of high protein and lipid levels.  相似文献

Two possible means of transmission of crayfish plague were investigated: via fish (as vectors), and via crayfish (as hosts or vectors when dead). The crayfish transmission experiments focussed on both the viability of the fungus in dead crayfish when kept in simulated field conditions, and on the treatments which kill viable forms of Aphanomyces astaci within the recently dead host (cadaver). It was found that A. astaci remains viable for 5 d, and possibly longer in crayfish kept in water at 21 degrees C after dying of crayfish plague. Heating (boiling for 1 min) was the quickest way of decontaminating crayfish cadavers. Freezing took considerably longer: after 48 h at -20 degrees C, viable stages were still present. It was also found that A. astaci is unlikely to survive passage of the gastrointestinal tract of either mammals or birds as no viable stages were found after 12 h at 37 degrees C. Two basic modes of transmission of crayfish plague via fish were investigated: (1) after passage of initially viable forms of A. astaci through the digestive tract of fish and (2) via fish skin. If A. astaci was fed to fish as infected abdominal cuticle, it was still viable after passage through the gastrointestinal tract. When pure mycelium or spores were fed to fish there was no indication of viable forms of A. astaci after passage through the gastrointestinal tract. Transmission via fish skin was not observed under the experimental conditions applied. The results on fish as vectors have practical importance for fish transport and stocking because the present study shows that there is a risk of transmission of crayfish plague via fish faeces. The investigation of crayfish as vectors delivers methods that could be used for treatment of crayfish imported for human consumption into crayfish-plague-free areas. This application is particularly important for the importation of American crayfish, which are in general suspected to carry A. astaci in their cuticle.  相似文献

Three newly developed microdiets (MDs: Diet 1, Diet 2 and Diet 3), one co–feeding diet (Diet 4, combinedDiet 3 with frozen copepods) and frozen copepods (Diet 5) were tested for weaning large yellow croaker (Pseudosciaenacrocea) larvae from 25 to 60 days after hatching (DAH). The highest final specific growth rate (SGR, 7.97%/d) and sur-vival (40.0%) were observed in fish fed Diet 1, while those were the lowest in fish fed Diet 5 (4.15%/d and 20.4%, re-spectively). The survival of larvae fed Diet 4 showed no significant difference (P>0.05) from that of larvae fed Diet 1.However, SGR of larvae fed Diet 4 was significantly lower (P<0.05) than that of larvae fed Diet 1. Among the MDs,Diet 1 was proved to be superior to Diet 2 and Diet 3 for both SGR and survival. For all treatments, biomass in each tankwas observed a similar trend as SGR. Whole-body protein was not significantly different (P>0.05) among fish fed theMDs, which was lower than that of fish fed Diet 4, but higher than that of fish fed Diet 5. Fish fed the MDs had signifi-cantly higher (P<0.05) lipid deposition (10.6%—13.3%) than fish fed either Diet 4 (7.6%) or Diet 5 (7.2%). DietaryC20:4n-6 (AA) level was significantly lower (P<0.05) in Diet 5 than that in the MDs. However, the AA level was sig-nificantly higher (P<0.05) in fish fed either Diet 4 or Diet 5 than that in fish fed the MDs. The exceeded C22:6n-3 (DHA)levels in fish compared to their corresponding diets were found in those fed either Diet 4 or Diet 5. Inversely, C20:5n-3(EPA) and DHA levels decreased in fish fed the MDs relative to their proportions in MDs. These results showed that fishfed either Diet 4 or Diet 5 had higher efficiency of AA, DHA and EPA deposition than fish fed the MDs. This study sug-gested that large yellow croaker larvae could be successfully weaned by MD. Future research should be based on for-mula of Diet 1, since it was superior to Diet 2 and Diet 3. In addition, changes of digestive enzymes and digestive tractof large yellow croaker larvae fed different diets need to be investigated for an overall evaluation.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The chief objective was to construct a thermal tolerance polygon for juvenile Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., using fish from four groups and two populations: two age groups from one population (0+, 1+ parr from River Leven), two size groups from the other population (slow and Fast growing 1+ parr from River Lune). 2. Fish were acclimated to constant temperatures of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 27°C; then the temperature was raised or lowered at 1°C h?1 to determine the upper and lower limits for feeding and survival over 10 min, 100 min, 1000 min and 7 days. As they were not significantly different between the four groups of fish, values at each acclimation temperature were pooled to provide arithmetic means (with SE) for the thermal tolerance polygon. 3. Incipient lethal levels (survival over 7 days) defined a tolerance zone within which salmon lived for a considerable time; upper mean incipient values increased with increasing acclimation temperature to reach a maximum of 27.8±0.2°C, lower mean incipient values were below 0°C and were therefore undetermined at acclimation temperatures <20°C but increased at higher acclimation temperatures to 2.2±0.4°C. Resistance to thermal stress outside the tolerance zone was a function of time; the ultimate lethal level (survival for 10 min) increased with acclimation temperature to a maximum of 33°C whilst the minimum value remained close to 0°C. Temperature limits for feeding increased slightly with acclimation temperature to upper and lower mean values of 22.5±0.3°C and 7.0±0.3°C. 4. In spite of different methodologies, values in the present investigation are similar to those obtained in previous, less comprehensive studies in the laboratory. They also agree with field observations on the temperature limits for feeding and survival. Thermal tolerance polygons are now available for eight species of salmonids and show that the highest temperature limits for feeding and survival are those recorded for juvenile Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

The effects of the timing of initial feeding (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 days after yolk exhaustion) and temperature (15, 18 and 21° C) on the point‐of‐no‐return (PNR), survival and growth of laboratory‐reared Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larvae were studied under controlled conditions. The larvae reached PNR on 7·7, 5·2 and 4·2 days‐post‐hatching (dph) at 15, 18 and 21° C, respectively. At each temperature, larval growth did not differ significantly among the delayed initial feedings 1 day before PNR but decreased significantly in larvae first fed after that. In the treatments where initial feeding was equally delayed, larvae grew significantly faster at 18 and 21° C than at 15° C. The larvae survived apparently better at 15 and 18° C than at 21° C when initial feeding was equally delayed. At each temperature, survival of the larvae first fed before PNR did not differ noticeably, while delayed initial feeding after that apparently reduced their survival. These results indicated that there existed a negatively temperature‐dependent PNR in the Japanese flounder larvae. Survival and growth of the larvae strongly depended on temperature as well as the timing of initial feeding. High temperature accelerated the yolk exhaustion and growth of the larvae and thus reduced their starvation tolerance and survival. To avoid potential starvation mortality and obtain good growth, the Japanese flounder larvae must establish successful initial feeding within 2 days after yolk exhaustion at 15° C and within 1 day at both 18 and 21° C.  相似文献

Female fish were kept under 16L:8D/20 degrees C in November and April and the onset of light and/or feeding times were shifted by several hours in the experimental groups. Photoperiod and feeding entrained significant fluctuations in serum gonadotropin hormone (GTH) levels when the onset of light and the first daily feeding were 4 hr apart, but not when they were 10 hr apart. Fish were subjected to 16L:8D for 14-16 days in February, and to either a constant warm (20 degrees C) or a diurnal sinusoidal (12-20 degrees C) temperature regime, the warmth being imposed during photophase or scotophase. While relatively high, uniform serum GTH levels were found throughout the 24-hr period in fish subjected to constant warmth, warm temperature during the day promoted fluctuations in serum GTH levels, and warmth during night resulted in relatively low, uniform serum GTH levels.  相似文献

We have investigated the effects of a 3-thia fatty acid (TTA) and of temperature on the fatty acid (FA) metabolism of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). One experiment investigated the activity of the peroxisomal beta-oxidation enzyme, acyl-CoA oxidase (ACO), and the incorporation of TTA into phospholipid (PL) molecular species. Salmon hepatocytes in culture were incubated either without TTA (control(spades)) or with 0.8 mM TTA (TTA(spades)) in a short term (48 h) temperature study at 5 degrees C and at 12 degrees C. TTA was incorporated into the four PL classes studied: phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylinositol (PI) and phosphatidylserine (PS). TTA was preferentially esterified with 18:1, 16:1, 20:4 and 22:6 in the PLs. Hepatocytes incubated with TTA had higher ACO activity at 5 degrees C than at 12 degrees C. In a second experiment salmon were fed a diet based on fish meal-fish oil without any TTA added (control) or a fish meal-fish oil diet supplemented with 0.6% TTA for 8 weeks at 12 degrees C and 20 weeks at 5 degrees C. At the end of the feeding trial, hepatocytes from fish acclimated to high or low temperatures were isolated from both dietary groups and incubated with either [1-(14)C]18:1 n-9 or [1-(14)C]20:4 n-3 at 5 degrees C or 12 degrees C. Radiolabelled 18:1 n-9 was mainly esterified into neutral lipids (NL), whereas [1-(14)C]20:4 n-3 was mainly esterified into PL at both temperatures. The rate of elongation of [1-(14)C]18:1 n-9 to 20:1 n-9 was twice as high in hepatocytes from fish fed the control diet than it was in hepatocytes from fish fed the TTA diet, at both temperatures. The amount of [1-(14)C]20:4 n-3 converted to 22:6 n-3 was approximately the same in hepatocytes from the two dietary groups, but there was a tendency to higher production of 22:6 n-3 at the lower temperature. Oxidation of [1-(14)C]18:1 n-9 to acid soluble products (ASP) and CO(2) was approximately 10-fold greater in hepatocytes kept at 5 degrees C than in those kept at 12 degrees C and the main oxidation products formed were acetate, oxaloacetate and malate.  相似文献

As a test of the energy limitation hypothesis (ELH), we predicted that temperature would have a significant influence on the infectivity of metacercariae of the digenetic trematode Zygocotyle lunata. Snails infected with Z. lunata were collected from ponds near Crawfordsville, Indiana, isolated at room temperature, and examined for the release of cercariae. Newly encysted metacercariae were collected and incubated 1-30 days at 1 of 5 temperatures (0, 3, 25, 31, 37 C). Twenty-five cysts were fed to each of 5 or 10 mice per treatment group (temperature). At 17 days postinfection, mice were killed and worms were recovered; data were collected on levels of infection in each group and the total body area of each worm. No worms were found in mice fed cysts that had been held at 0 C or 37 C (after 30 days). There were no differences in prevalence, infectivity, or mean intensity among the 3, 25, and 31 C treatments. Infectivity of metacercariae incubated at 37 C for 1 day was significantly greater than in all other treatments, while infectivity of metacercariae in the 37 C/15-day treatment was significantly lower than in all others. Mean body area of worms at 37 C/15 days was significantly greater than at other temperatures, suggesting density-dependent increases in growth. These results, particularly those from the 37 C treatments, are consistent with the ELH; infectivity was lower at high temperatures or when incubated for more time at 1 temperature (fewer energy reserves). It is suggested that microhabitat conditions experienced by metacercariae of Z. lunata could contribute to longer larval life, thus influencing this parasite's temporal dispersal.  相似文献

The impacts of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) exposure on smoltification and subsequent seawater performance were investigated in hatchery-reared, anadromous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus). The fish were subjected to a 2-month summer seawater residence, after which they were orally dosed with 0 (Control, C), 1 (Low Dose, LD) or 100 mg Aroclor 1254 kg(-1) body mass (High Dose, HD) in November. They were then held in fresh water, without being fed (to mimic their natural overwintering in freshwater), until they had smolted in June the next year. The smolts were then transferred to seawater and fed to mimic their summer feeding residence in seawater, followed by a period without food in freshwater from August until maturation in October. Compared with C and LD charr, the HD charr had either a transient or a permanent reduction in plasma growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1, and thyroxin and triiodothyronine titers during the period of smoltification. These hormonal alterations in the HD charr corresponded with impaired hyposmoregulatory ability in May and June, as well as reduced growth rate and survival after transference to seawater. Consequently, fewer fish in the HD group matured in October compared to the other two treatments. The HD fish had a liver PCB concentration ranging between 14 and 42 mg kg(-1) wet mass, whereas there were similar, and very low, liver PCB concentrations in LD and C fish throughout the smolting period. Our findings suggest that PCB might compromise mechanisms important for fitness in a fish species living in an extreme environment.  相似文献
