Restoration of grassland ecosystems is critical to the provision of ecosystem services, however, legacies of historic disturbances pose a challenge to grassland restoration. In the northern Great Plains of North America, continued fragmentation and disturbance of northern fescue prairies has prompted more stringent criteria to regulate the revegetation of native prairies disturbed by industrial activities. Here, we evaluate methods of revegetating northern fescue prairies, disturbed by energy development, and test the hypothesis that higher richness of species seeded within disturbed areas improves the structure, diversity, and composition of revegetated communities. Our results demonstrate that disturbed northern fescue prairies are able to recover their structural elements, including vegetative and ground cover and plant litter, irrespective of the number of species in the seed mixes, even though revegetated areas remained similar in all measures of community diversity. Despite this, revegetated areas remained compositionally different from adjacent native prairies, 7 years following seeding treatments. Based on our observations, the persistent differences in the species composition of disturbed and undisturbed prairies highlight that all efforts should be practiced to minimize the scale of disturbance of northern fescue prairies through energy development.  相似文献

Biological invasions are among the greatest threats to global biodiversity, but in contrast to most other global threats, they suffer from specific communication issues. Our paper presents the first new addition to the widely cited IUCN list of “100 of the world’s worst invasive species”, a list created a decade ago in response to these communication issues. We briefly present this list, the recent removal of one species from that list, and the rationale to include a novel, 100th species to replace it. The new species of this list, giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta), was chosen by the community of invasion biologists (over 650 experts from over 60 countries). This new addition to the list will draw public attention to the damage caused by invasive alien species and it will help stimulate the necessary discussion of this critical issue in science and policy circles.  相似文献

-Lactam antibiotic susceptibility and the presence of -lactamase were examined in clinical strains ofBacteroides species. All strains produced a noninducible, cell-associated cephalosporinase. Based on isoelectric focusing, molecular weight determinations, substrate profiles, and inhibition studies, it was concluded that allBacteroides strains examined produced a very similar, if not identical, -lactamase in terms of these enzymatic and physical characteristics.  相似文献

Each symbiotic Chlorella of the ciliate Paramecium bursaria is enclosed in a perialgal vacuole membrane derived from the host digestive vacuole membrane. Alga-free paramecia and symbiotic algae can grow independently. Mixing them experimentally can cause reinfection. Earlier, we reported that the symbiotic algae appear to push the host trichocysts aside to become fixed beneath the host cell cortex during the algal reinfection process. Indirect immunofluorescence microscopy with a monoclonal antibody against the trichocysts demonstrates that the trichocysts change their locality to form algal attachment sites and decrease their density beneath the host cell cortex through algal reinfection. Transmission electron microscopy to detect acid phosphatase activity showed that some trichocysts near the host cell cortex are digested by the host lysosomal fusion during algal reinfection. Removal of algae from the host cell using cycloheximide recovers the trichocyst's arrangement and number near the host cell cortex. These results indicate that symbiotic algae compete for their attachment sites with preexisting trichocysts and that the algae have the ability to ensure algal attachment sites beneath the host cell cortex.  相似文献

Darwin’s finches are an iconic example of adaptive radiation. The size and shape of the beaks of different finch species are diversified for feeding on different size seeds and other food resources. However, beaks also serve other functions, such as preening for the control of ectoparasites. In diverse groups of birds, the effectiveness of preening is governed by the length of the overhanging tip of the upper mandible of the beak. This overhang functions as a template against which the tip of the lower mandible generates a pinching force sufficient to damage or kill ectoparasites. Here we compare feeding versus preening components of the beak morphology of small, medium, and large ground finches that share a single parasite community. Despite adaptive divergence in beak morphology related to feeding, the three species have nearly identical relative mandibular overhang lengths. Moreover, birds with intermediate length overhangs have the lowest feather mite loads. These results suggest that Darwin’s finches maintain an optimal beak morphology to effectively control their ectoparasites.  相似文献

A linkage map of Lablab purpureus consisting of 127 RFLP and 91 RAPD loci was constructed in an F2 population of 119 individuals. This population was derived from a cross between ’Rongai’ (an annual cultivar) and CPI 24973 (a perennial wild accession). The map comprises 17 linkage groups and covers 1610 centiMorgans (cM) with an average distance of 7 cM between markers. Severe segregation distortions were observed, with the very extreme situation where no paternal type was recovered from the mapping population. These results strongly suggest the presence of a gene conferring preferential transmission from the maternal parent ’Rongai’. It was also clear that, while the majority of RAPD markers are valuable when used together with RFLP or other stringent marker systems, they could be problematic when used solely in mapping exercises. In this paper, we introduce the concept of 'originality of a species within a set' in order to indicate the average rarity of all the features belonging to this species. Using a phylogenetic tree of 70 species of New World terrestrial Carnivora, we suggest measuring the originality by a probability distribution. This maximizes the expected number of features shared by two species randomly drawn from the set. By using this new index, we take account of branch lengths whereas current indices of originality focus on tree topology. As a supplement to Nee and May's optimizing algorithm, we find that originality must be one of the criteria used in conservation planning.  相似文献

The -lactamases of individual strains ofBacteroides fragilis, B. thetaiotaomicron, andB. melaninogenicus were examined to characterize their enzymatic activity and the relation between the periplasmic and cytoplasmic forms of the enzymes. Km and Vmax values indicate that all strains examined were very similar in terms of enzymatic activity with the antibiotics tested. Electrophoretic analysis and treatment with phospholipase D suggest the presence of a cytoplasmic form of the enzyme that is modified upon entry into the periplasmic space.  相似文献

Perhaps Darwin would agree that speciation is no longer the mystery of mysteries that it used to be. It is now generally accepted that evolution by natural selection can contribute to ecological adaptation, resulting in the evolution of reproductive barriers and, hence, to the evolution of new species (Schluter & Conte 2009 ; Meyer 2011 ; Nosil 2012 ). From genes that encode silencing proteins that cause infertility in hybrid mice (Mihola et al. 2009 ), to segregation distorters linked to speciation in fruit flies (Phadnis & Orr 2009 ), or pollinator‐mediated selection on flower colour alleles driving reinforcement in Texan wildflowers (Hopkins & Rausher 2012 ), characterization of the genes that drive speciation is providing clues to the origin of species (Nosil & Schluter 2011 ). It is becoming apparent that, while recent work continues to overturn historical ideas about sympatric speciation (e.g. Barluenga et al. 2006 ), ecological circumstances strongly influence patterns of genomic divergence, and ultimately the establishment of reproductive isolation when gene flow is present (Elmer & Meyer 2011 ). Less clear, however, are the genetic mechanisms that cause speciation, particularly when ongoing gene flow is occurring. Now, in this issue, Franchini et al. ( 2014 ) employ a classic genetic mapping approach augmented with new genomic tools to elucidate the genomic architecture of ecologically divergent body shapes in a pair of sympatric crater lake cichlid fishes. From over 450 segregating SNPs in an F2 cross, 72 SNPs were linked to 11 QTL associated with external morphology measured by means of traditional and geometric morphometrics. Annotation of two highly supported QTL further pointed to genes that might contribute to ecological divergence in body shape in Midas cichlids, overall supporting the hypothesis that genomic regions of large phenotypic effect may be contributing to early‐stage divergence in Midas cichlids.  相似文献

Brother Marie-Victorin described six species from Quebec, Canada. We herein designate lectotypes for Aster gaspensis, Botrychium minganense, Cirsium minganense, and Gentiana gaspensis. Ernst Mayr’s typological/population distinction is a conceptual thread that runs throughout much of his work in systematics, evolutionary biology, and the history and philosophy of biology. Mayr himself claims that typological thinking originated in the philosophy of Plato and that population thinking was first introduced by Charles Darwin and field naturalists. A more proximate origin of the typological/population thinking, however, is found in Mayr’s own work on species. This paper traces the antecedents of the typological/population distinction by detailing Mayr’s changing views of species between 1942 and 1955. During this period, Mayr struggles to refine the biological species concept in the face of tensions that exist between studying species locally and studying them as geographically distributed collections of variable populations. The typological/population distinction is first formulated in 1955, when Mayr generalizes from the type concept versus the population concept in taxonomy to typological versus population thinking in biology more generally. Mayr’s appeal to the more general distinction between typological and population thinking coincides with the waning status of natural history and evolutionary biology that occurs in the early 1950s and the distinction plays an important role in Mayr’s efforts to legitimate the natural historical sciences.  相似文献

The impacts of two species of ants (Lasius niger and Pristomyrmex pungens) attending the cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) on the number of emerging adults of the aphids primary parasitoid (Lysiphlebus japonicus) and hyperparasitoids were assessed experimentally at a no-pesticide mandarin grove. L.japonicus females were observed foraging frequently in aphid colonies attended by either ant species, with more females in P.pungens-attended than in L.niger-attended colonies, but rarely in aphid colonies where ants were artificially excluded. Females were less often attacked by P.pungens workers than by L.niger workers, so that they stayed longer and oviposited into more aphids in P.pungens-attended than in L.niger-attended colonies. Attendance by each ant species reduced predator numbers in aphid colonies, compared to colonies where ants were absent, although P.pungens was slightly less effective in repelling predators. Therefore, both ant species incidentally protected parasitized aphids from predators. Consequently, L.japonicus-mummies were abundant in colonies attended by either ant species, with more mummies in P.pungens-attended colonies, and were scarce in ant-excluded colonies. The hyperparasitism and predation on L.japonicus larvae within mummies occurred more frequently in P.pungens-attended than in L.niger-attended colonies, but mummy predation rate was only 20% in the former. As a result, the number of emerging L.japonicus adults did not differ significantly between aphid colonies attended by the two ant species, but significantly more hyperparasitoids emerged in colonies attended by the relatively less aggressive P.pungens than in colonies attended by L.niger.  相似文献

The respiratory chain of Escherichia?coli contains three quinones. Menaquinone and demethylmenaquinone have low midpoint potentials and are involved in anaerobic respiration, while ubiquinone, which has a high midpoint potential, is involved in aerobic and nitrate respiration. Here, we report that demethylmenaquinone plays a role not only in trimethylaminooxide-, dimethylsulfoxide- and fumarate-dependent respiration, but also in aerobic respiration. Furthermore, we demonstrate that demethylmenaquinone serves as an electron acceptor for oxidation of succinate to fumarate, and that all three quinol oxidases of E.?coli accept electrons from this naphtoquinone derivative.  相似文献

Invasive species are widely accepted as one of the leading direct causes of biodiversity loss. However, much of the evidence for this contention is based on simple correlations between exotic dominance and native species decline in degraded systems. Although appealing, direct causality is not the only possible interpretation. A plausible alternative hypothesis is that exotic dominance could be the indirect consequence of habitat modification driving native species loss. In a new paper, MacDougall and Turkington now provide the first direct test of whether invasive species are the drivers of community change, or merely 'passengers' along for the environmental ride.  相似文献

The sterols from eight species in seven genera of the Cactaceae are 24-alkyl-Δ5-sterols. In all eight species, Echinopsis tubiflora, Pereskia aculeata, Hylocereus undatus, Notocactus scopa, Epiphyllum sp., Schlumbergera bridgesii, Opuntia comonduensis and O. humifusa, the dominant sterol is sitosterol (24α-ethylcholest-5-en-3β-ol) at 66–87% of the total sterol composition with the 24ξ-methylcholest-5-en-3β-ol present at 8–33%. Stigmasterol (24α-ethylcholesta-5,22E-dien-3β-ol) is present at 2–8% of the total sterol in P. aculeata, H. undatus, N. scopa and Epiphyllum sp. whereas cholesterol (cholest-5-en-3β-ol) is present in six species at levels of <0.1–5.0%. Avenasterol (24-ethylcholesta-7,24(28)Z-dien-3/gb-ol) and sitostanol (24α-ethyl-5α-cholestan-3β-ol) are each present in two species.  相似文献

A ring species consists of two reproductively isolated forms connected by a chain of intergrading populations encircling a geographic barrier. The mountains encircling the Sichuan Basin in southwestern China harbor great species diversity and endemism, and they are candidate regions for ring species. Here, we examined a potential ring species complex with a ring distribution surrounding the Sichuan Basinand the reproductive barrier between sibling species Rhodiola yunnanensis and R. henryi of the R. yunnanensis complex. In this study, we test the hypothesis that R. yunnanensis and R. henryi diverged by the ring-species model using an amplicon sequencing strategy targeting the introns of 27 single-copy nuclear genes and 14 chloroplast DNA sequences. Our studies indicated that the R. yunnanensis complex is monophyletic, originates at the late Miocene, and forms its current ring distribution pattern after the LIG. In addition, clear genetic intergradation was not found among R. henryi populations within the distribution ring. All these findings suggest that the divergence of two sibling species was not driven by the geographic isolation, and they were not originated from the ring-species model; however, the basin-surrounding distribution pattern and reproductive barrier between them meet some criteria for being a ring species.  相似文献
