The effects of changes in the structural complexity of a seagrass habitat on the densities of filefish (Rudarius ercodes) and streaked gobies (Acentrogobius pflaumii), were investigated by conducting a 9 month field experiment in aZostera marina bed at Moroiso Bay, Aburatsubo, central Japan. The experimental design included a control and 7 treatments where leaf height or shoot densities were reduced. During the period of high density of filefish, the species was more abundant in quadrats with longer leaves and denser shoots, but this tendency was not observed during the period of low density. Filefish did not frequent the quadrat cleared of seagrass or the area of sandy substratum surrounding the experimental seagrass bed at any time. The abundance of streaked gobies did not differ significantly among 8 experimental quadrats, although the species seldom appeared over the surrounding sandy substratum. The results suggested that filefish, unlike gobies, were attracted to factors associated with theZostera leaves, such as epiphytic prey and/or the complex living space.  相似文献

Abstract Mensurative experiments investigated the effects of different observers on estimates of the density of shoots of two species of seagrass: Posidonia australis Hook and Zostera capricorni Aschers. Balanced programmes of sampling were used to examine variation in counts of seagrass shoots attributable to different observers, sizes of quadrats, depths and locations within large beds of each species of seagrass. A separate experiment examined differences between novice observers and a more experienced observer, when an ‘optimal’ size of sampling unit was used. Estimated densities of Zostera shoots varied inconsistently among observers, quadrats, depths and locations. Differences between observers were not affected by the size of quadrat used to count Posidonia shoots, but varied between locations in the seagrass bed. Experience had only a minor impact on biases. Only two of 12 novices produced counts that were different from the experienced observer. These results emphasize the importance of considering both accuracy and precision in the design of field studies of seagrasses.  相似文献

Predation of fish assemblages in seagrass meadows was examined in the field and in tank experiments. Lure trolling indicated that (1) total abundance of fish was higher on bare sediment where small fish (<5 cm), including juveniles, predominated; (2) abundance was lowest in seagrass where large fish (>15 cm) predominated; (3) large ambush predators, primarily the grass goby and European eel, were almost completely restricted to seagrass; (4) the predation mode in seagrass was almost entirely ambushing or stalk-attacking, while the predation mode on bare sediment was almost entirely chase-attacking; (5) ambush predation was far more successful than chase-attack predation; and (6) overall predation risk was approximately three times higher in seagrass. Tank experiments showed that piscivory success of the grass goby was higher than that of the most common chase-attacker, the black goby, and the presence or absence of artificial seagrass, regardless of density, had no significant effect on predation success of either species. Guts of the grass goby contained food items of a wider size range that averaged twice the size of those of the black goby. Our results confirm our prediction that the risk of predation, especially of small/juvenile fish, is higher in seagrass meadows than at adjacent bare substrate, and this risk differential is explained by the presence of larger, more efficient ambush predators restricted to seagrass, and the scarcity of large chase-attack predators in the Novigrad Sea.  相似文献

The rôle of substratum choice and subsequent survival in determining the patterns of recruitment of the colonial ascidian Podoclavella cylindrica (Quoy & Gaimard) (Clavelinidae : Aplousobranchia) were examined. Larval settlement preferences on five substrata were determined by following individual larvae underwater and observing settlement behaviour on their first encounter with a substratum. The survival of settling larvae was monitored daily for 30 consecutive days in quadrats on the five substrata. Larvae settled preferentially on substrata that showed reduced mortality of settlers, hence recruitment was correlated with settlement. In almost all cases larvae rejected the unfouled surfaces of sponges, preferring those with epifauna, and settled in highest densities on bare space. Mortality of new recruits varied markedly between substrata but was very low on bare space. Juvenile mortality resulted from overgrowth by neighbouring invertebrates and from the removal of epifauna, associated with sponges, on which juveniles had settled.  相似文献

Abstract The diet of juveniles of Pelates sexlineatus was examined at six estuaries, separated by tens to hundreds of kilometres, and two sites within each estuary, separated by hundreds of metres to kilometres. Fish were collected in Zostera capricorni seagrass meadows along the coast of New South Wales (Australia). Spatial variability in diet was compared with the abundance of prey. Pelates sexlineatus had a broad diet (27 different prey) but generally preferred crustaceans (harpacticoid copepods, gammarid amphipods, ostracods and tanaids), although at some sites other prey items were important (e.g. polychaetes, nematodes and foraminiferans). Composition of the diet varied among estuaries and between sites. Proportional representation of the different size of prey eaten by the three sizes of juveniles (40‐ 54 , 55–74 and 75–94 mm standard length) was similar. Fish generally preferred prey smaller than 1 mm. Abundance of prey also varied at both spatial scales. At five of the 12 sites, there was a significant correlation between abundance of prey in the seagrass meadows and abundance of prey in the diet. Variation in the composition of the diet was partly explained by spatial variation in abundance of prey. When crustaceans were not abundant in the seagrass, P. sexlineatus had a broad diet, taking both benthic and planktonic prey items. It is concluded therefore that trophic linkages between P. sexlineatus and benthic invertebrates may vary greatly with spatial scales from hundreds of metres to hundreds of kilometres, and are strongly related to availability of prey in seagrass habitats.  相似文献

Synopsis The foraging ecology of two temperate marine gobies (Pisces: Gobiidae) was studied in rocky subtidal habitats off Santa Catalina Island, California. The bluebanded goby, Lythrypnus dalli, foraged from exposed ledges and fed on planktonic and benthic prey, although planktonic prey were more important in diets by number and weight. The more cryptic zebra goby, Lythrypnus zebra, remained hidden under rocks and in crevices feeding on benthic prey almost exclusively. The active selection of particular prey taxa from the two prey sources (water column and substratum), mediated by species-specific differences in foraging behavior, resulted in interspecific differences in type, number, size and weight of prey consumed. Interspecific differences in foraging ecology reflect the selection of prey most readily available to these fishes that occupy specific and fixed microhabitats within rocky reefs.  相似文献

Changes in available food and utilized foods for a densely populated guild of animals can uncover periods of niche displacement among particular consumer species or their separate size classes. Dense populations of small fishes and their foods were çensussed for 13 months and studied experimentally in shoalgrass and turtlegrass meadows of Redfish Bay, Texas. Feeding habits were determined with respect to prey availability, and illustrated the extent to which seasonal partitioning of food corresponded to food depletion among these abundant consumers in seagrass meadow food webs. The darter goby, code goby, pinfish, and Gulf pipefish were the most common species throughout the year. Although the darter goby did not show distinct ontogenetic changes in food habits, the code goby, Gulf pipefish, and pinfish demonstrated major ontogenetic progressions of foods selected.Food availability in the seagrass meadows changed seasonally. When major prey such as amphipods were abundant, during spring, many fish species showed high overlap in food use. Regardless of food availability, the code goby and Gulf pipefish fed mainly on amphipods or copepods. The more common darter goby and pinfish seasonally changed their diets with changes in food availability; the darter goby and pinfish were more carnivorous during spring, but they largely consumed epiphytic algae during summer. Cage experiments were used to monitor foods confined with elevated densities of pinfish and darter gobies, relative to control cages at natural overall densities. Prey items in the former cages decreased sharply, with corresponding dietary shifts by these common fishes. During resource depletion, these changes in resource use by these naturally concentrated consumers appeared as temporary partitioning of available resources. This shift occurred during both natural (seasonal) and experimental depletions of food, and appears to result from increased interspecific and intraspecific competition during periods of depleted preferred foods.  相似文献

A series of observations and an experiment were carried out to test hypotheses about the effects of shade on the densities of spirorbid polychaetes (Neodexiospira spp.) on intertidal pneumatophores (mangrove roots) of Avicennia marina. Densities of spirorbids were greater on pneumatophores surrounded by seagrass (Zostera mucronata) than patches without seagrass. Within patches of seagrass, the density and survivorship of spirorbids on pneumatophores was greater near the substratum (covered by seagrass) than high above the substratum (not covered by seagrass). The model that these patterns of abundance are explained by greater recruitment of spirorbids to shaded surfaces was assessed. This was done by experimentally testing the hypothesis that recruitment to patches without seagrass would not differ between the upper (unshaded) and lower surfaces (unshaded) of clear plastic sheets, but would be greater on the lower surfaces (shaded) than upper surfaces (unshaded) of black plastic sheets. Recruitment was consistent with these predictions and therefore provided evidence that differences in densities of spirorbids between substrata with and without seagrass may be due largely to differences in shading.  相似文献

To clarify the feeding habits of seagrass fishes, the gut contents of 31 fish species collected in aZostera marina bed at Aburatsubo central Japan, were examined. Ontogenetic changes in food preference were recognized in 12 species. In general, juveniles of the latter preyed mainly on small crustaceans (e.g., gammaridean amphipods) or planktonic animals (e.g., calanoid and cyclopoid copepods), subsequently changing to other prey items (e.g., hard-shelled animals) with growth. Cluster analysis based on dietary overlaps showed that the seagrass fish assemblage comprised seven feeding guilds (small-crustacean, planktonic-animal, large-crustacean, polychaete, fish, hard-shelled mollusc and detritus feeders). Of these, small-crustacean feeders and planktonic-animal feeders were the most abundantly represented, including juveniles of several species, which, when adult, transferred to other feeding guilds. Field studies of the sea cucumber Holothuria scabra conducted in Kogu Veke, Solomon Islands, showed monthly recruitment of newly-settled juveniles on seagrass and indicated that size distribution was a function of substratum type and depth. Adults >250 mm body length were found mainly on sand, with <5% organic matter (OM), at depths of >1–3 m. Individuals >10–250 mm were found mostly in 30–120 cm of water, on mud and muddy sand with OM content between 5 and 10%. Specimens >40–150 mm were also found in the intertidal zone, sometimes burrowed on exposed sandflats at low tide. Holothuria scabra avoided substrata of fine silt or shell and coral pebbles, and sediment with an organic content 30%. Juveniles 100 mm burrowed at sunrise and surfaced at sunset, whereas individuals >100 mm burrowed and surfaced a few hours earlier. Holothuria scabra tended to burrow when salinity decreased, whereas increased water temperatures reduced normal burrowing behaviour. Spatial distribution, observed during tank experiments, suggested that adult H. scabra aggregated prior to spawning and in response to the lunar cycle. The formation of pairs, trios or larger groups increased during the new moon and was most common just before the full moon. Newly-settled juveniles up to ca. 9 mm were found on seagrass leaves. Typically, maximum densities and smallest recruits were observed a couple of weeks after the full moon, lower densities and slightly larger recruits were found a few days later. Juveniles with a mean length around 65 mm released on sand moved less and grew faster than juveniles released in seagrass beds or on substrata of shells and crushed coral.  相似文献

Synopsis Extensive limestone reefs are a characteristic feature of much of the coastline of Western Australia, and potentially represent a major habitat feature influencing the structure of the coastal fish community. The structure and temporal dynamics of the fish fauna and its relationships to nearshore patch reefs and surrounding habitat near Dongara, Western Australia, were examined using (1) diel gill-netting and (2) quantitative rotenone sampling of enclosed areas of substratum. Long-term and day-to-day variability of the fauna was low. Dominant species of gill-net collections were either associated with reefs or occurred in similar abundances at both reefs and surrounding sand/seagrass flats. The overall abundance, number of species and biomass of netted fishes was higher around reefs. Rotenone collections of the more sedentary species showed a similar pattern, but suggested, however, that a simple reef versus surrounding sand and seagrass habitat comparison is complicated by the canopy-forming seagrass Amphibolis that occurs on reef tops. Time of day had an important effect on overall fish abundance and number of species, with peaks occurring at crepuscular periods. This reflected dusk and dawn activity peaks of a dominant species rather than overlapping activities of many diurnal and nocturnal species. Diel switches between reef-edge habitat and surrounding sand/seagrass flats were uncommon despite expectations (based on literature examples) that patch reefs would function primarily as sheltering habitats and surrounding non-reef areas act as foraging habitat. High catches at reef-edge sites suggest that the majority of fishes forage on or near limestone patch reefs. Fish densities of around 0.8 individuals per m-2 of bottom on these Western Australian reefs are relatively high in comparison to visual census estimates obtained for temperate reef systems in South Australia and New Zealand, but similar to those obtained using comparable netting methods in temperate Australian seagrass systems.  相似文献

Summary Field experiments were undertaken on the intertidal gastropod Bembicium auratum, which is one of the dominant organisms in sheltered bays and mangroves in New South Wales. Animals were caged at various densities ranging from natural levels to about four times normal density. Increased density resulted in increased mortality (particularly of juveniles), reduced body weight, and (less conclusively) a decline in growth rate. Chlorophyll levels of the mangrove mud within the cages were monitored as an index of food availability, and increased rapidly in the control cages in the absence of Bembicium, remained steady at normal Bembicium densities, and declined at higher densities. Parallel experiments were conducted on the effects of substratum on Bembicium. One series of animals was allowed access to a hard substratum and the other only to mud. Body weights and survivorship were proportionally lower in animals deprived of a hard substratum. Juveniles were particularly susceptible to a shortage of food and more dependent on a hard substratum than adults. The population structure also suggests a high juvenile mortality but high adult survival and longevity. Bembicium is very abundant low on the shore but numbers decline and body weights increase higher up. Chlorophyll levels and amounts of hard substratum also decline up the shore. Possibly juveniles settle selectively (or survive better) low on the shore where oysters provide a dense hard substratum. Adults are less dependent on the hard substratum and may disperse up the shore, explaining the patterns of abundance and size.As Bembicium limits its own food supply and seemingly is limited by it, predation is unlikely to play an important role in restricting population density.  相似文献

To clarify differences in community structures and habitat utilization patterns of fishes in Enhalus acoroides- and Thalassia hemprichii-dominated seagrass beds on fringing coral reefs, visual censuses were conducted at Iriomote and Ishigaki islands, southern Japan. The numbers of fish species and individuals were significantly higher in the E. acoroides bed than in the T. hemprichii bed, although the 15 most dominant fishes in each seagrass bed were similar. Cluster and ordination analyses based on the number of individuals of each fish species also demonstrated that fish community structures were similar in the two seagrass beds. Species and individual numbers of coral reef fishes which utilized the seagrass beds numbered less than about 15% of whole coral reef fish numbers, although they comprised about half of the seagrass bed fishes. Of the 15 most dominant species, 5 occurred only in the two seagrass beds, including seagrass feeders. Ten other species were reef species, their habitat utilization patterns not differing greatly between the two seagrass beds. Some reef species, such as Lethrinus atkinsoni and L. obsoletus, showed ontogenetic habitat shifts with growth, from the seagrass beds to the coral areas. These results indicate that community structures and habitat utilization patterns of fishes were similar between E. acoroides- and T. hemprichii-dominated seagrass beds, whereas many coral reef fishes hardly utilized the seagrass beds.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in artificial stream tanks with juvenile Chinese sturgeon, Acipenser sinensis, captured in the Yangtze Estuary to test two null hypotheses (1) juveniles have no preference for white or black substrates, and (2) white or black substrate color has no effect on juvenile feeding efficiency on the barcheek goby,Rhinogobius giurinus, a dark-colored prey of wild juveniles. Juveniles strongly preferred white substrate. However, in feeding tests, feeding efficiency by juveniles was similar on white or black substrates. Thus, substrate color had no effect on feeding efficiency. Results suggest the innate preference for white substrate is not a visual adaptation for capturing prey on a contrasting background, but is an adaptation predisposing juveniles to seek light-colored sandy substrate where forage abundance is greatest.  相似文献

This study examined population density, habitat and diet of Dasyatis marianae, a recently discovered species, in the reef complex of Maracajaú in Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. The highest concentration of D. marianae occurred in seagrass beds. Habitat use differed significantly between sex and age classes, with females and juveniles using areas other than reefs. Females utilized primarily seagrass beds and juveniles occurred mainly along the sandy bottom near the beach, highlighting the importance of protecting these areas. Dasyatis marianae diet was characterized primarily by crustaceans (91·9% index of relative importance, IRI), including shrimp, crabs and lobsters. The availability of prey in different habitat types influences occupation by D. marianae, but the prey selectivity of D. marianae, among other factors, may affect this relationship. Intense shrimp and lobster fishing in the region probably has an effect on preferred prey resources of this ray. Information on feeding habits of this species contributes to a better understanding of trophic dynamics and food webs, which is critical if ecosystem principles are to be integrated into fisheries management.  相似文献

Abstract We compared nekton and benthos densities and community compositions in a natural mixed seagrass bed dominated by Halodule wrightii (shoalgrass) with those found in three shoalgrass transplant sites and adjoining sand habitats in western Galveston Bay, Texas, U.S.A. Quantitative drop traps and cores were used to compare communities up to seven times over 36 months post‐transplant where transplant beds survived. Total densities of fishes, decapods, annelids, benthic crustaceans, and most dominant species were significantly higher in natural seagrass than in transplanted shoalgrass or sand habitats during most sampling periods. On occasion, fish and decapod densities were significantly higher in transplanted shoalgrass than in adjoining sand habitats. No consistent faunal differences were found among transplant sites before two of three sites failed. Taxonomic comparison of community compositions indicated that nekton and benthos communities in natural seagrass beds were usually distinct from those in transplanted beds or sand habitats, which were similar. We conclude that reestablishing a shoalgrass bed that resembles a natural seagrass bed and its faunal communities in the Galveston Bay system will take longer than 3 years, provided that transplants persist.  相似文献

Field surveys over 2 years in contiguous beds of the seagrassesZostera capricorni andPosidonia australis showed that the green algaCodium duthieae was consistently more abundant inZ. capricorni than inP. australis. In 1 year, mature plants were also more abundant at the boundary between the seagrass beds than in either bed. Field experiments and programmes of sampling were used to investigate three potential explanations for the unusual distribution of this alga: (1) that the availability of substrata suitable for attachment of the alga differed between the two seagrass beds; (2) that mortality of matureC. duthieae differed between the seagrass beds; and/or (3) that the intensity of recruitment was different in the two seagrass beds.C. duthieae plants were exclusively epibionts of the bivalveAnadara trapezia. Detailed sampling showed that the abundance ofA. trapezia was similar in both seagrass beds and that the distribution of bivalves suitable as substrata forC. duthieae plants was not obviously related to proximity to the boundary between the beds. Two experiments investigated the survival ofC. duthieae plants in each bed. In the first, matureC. duthieae plants transplanted into theP. australis bed suffered similar rates of mortality to plants which were disturbed and moved within theZ. capricorni bed or which were left undisturbed in theZ. capricorni bed. Fewer of the host bivalves were recovered from theZ. capricorni bed, however, indicating that the mechanism of mortality differed between the beds, hosts being more frequently dislodged in theZ. capricorni bed. Removal of the leaves of the seagrasses had consistently greater effects on near-bottom current velocities in theZ. capricorni bed than in theP. australis bed and significantly increased mortality ofC. duthieae in theZ. capricorni bed. Survival of plants was greater in plots of artificial leaves ofP. australis placed in theZ. capricorni bed than in plots of the naturalZ. capricorni leaves or plots where the natural leaves were removed. Most mortality in theZ. capricorni bed was due to dislodgement of the alga and its bivalve substratum. Corresponding manipulations of leaves in theP. australis bed had consistently smaller effects on survivorship of both the alga and its host. Patterns in the recruitment of the alga most clearly reflected the distribution of adults.C. duthieae recruits were 5 times more abundant in theZ. capricorni bed and at the boundary between the two beds than in theP. australis bed. The results demonstrate how habitat structure, provided by the canopy of leaves of the two species of seagrass, can have contrasting effects on the recruitment and mortality of a macroalga. In the case ofC. duthieae, it appears that the differential pattern of recruitment is the primary determinant of the distribution of adult plants.  相似文献

Seasonal dynamics were studied by monthly monitoring of biological and environmental variables in permanent quadrats in two contrasting intertidal seagrass beds in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, from February 1991 to January 1992. Datasets were analysed with canonical correlation analysis for correlations between environmental and biological variables. Considerable variation in biomass, production and plant tissue nutrient contents in a monospecific seagrass bed of Enhalus acoroides, growing on a coastal terrigenous mudbank (Gusung Tallang), was assumed to be related to riverine influences of the nearby Tallo River. The variation in seagrass variables at this site could, however, not be significantly correlated to seasonal patterns in rainfall, salinity, tides, nutrient availability, water motion or turbidity. A seasonal cycle in biomass, production and nutrient contents in a mixed seagrass bed of Thalassia hemprichii and E. acoroides, growing on carbonate sand on the reef flat of an offshore coral island (Barang Lompo), was found to be largely determined by tidal exposure and water motion. Exposure of the intertidal seagrass bed during hours of low water during spring tides showed a gradual shift from exposure during the night (January-June) to exposure during daylight (July-December). Daylight exposure resulted in a significant loss of above-ground plant biomass through desiccation and burning of leaves. The observed seasonal dynamics of the seagrass bed on reef sediment contrast with reports from the Caribbean, where the effect of tidal exposure on comparable shallow-water seagrass communities is relatively insignificant due to a small tidal amplitude.  相似文献

Scleractinian coral recruitment patterns were studied at depths of 9, 18, 27 and 37 m on the east and west walls of Salt River submarine canyon, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, by censusing coral juveniles which settled on experimental settling plates placed on the reef for 3–26 months as well as coral juveniles within quadrats on the reef. The most common species in the juvenile population within quadrats were Agaricia agaricites, Porites astreoides, Madracis decactis, Stephanocoenia michelinii, and A. lamarcki. The only species settling on settling plates were Agaricia spp., Madracis decactis, Porites spp., Stephanocoenia michelinii and Favia fragum. A total of 271 corals settled on 342 plates, with 51% of the juveniles on the east wall and 49% on the west wall. Of these 34% settled on horizontal surfaces and 66% on vertical surfaces. Based on results from quadrats, Agaricia agaricites and Porites astreoides had high recruitment rates relative to their abundance on the reef. In contrast, Agaricia lamarcki, Montastraea annularis, M. cavernosa and Siderastrea siderea had high amounts of cover compared to their abundance as juveniles within quadrats. The mean number of juveniles per m2 within quadrats ranged from 3 to 42. In general, there was a decrease in the mean number of juveniles and the number of species with depth. Total number of juveniles on settling plates was highest at 18 m on both walls. The largest number within quadrats was at 18 m on the east wall, followed by 9 m and 18 m on the west wall. High rates of coral recruitment tended to be associated with low algal biomass and relatively high grazing pressure by urchins and fishes.  相似文献
