This paper reports the results obtained during an investigation aimed at transferring to the demonstrative scale an aerobic granular biomass system (SBBGR – Sequencing Batch Biofilter Granular Reactor) integrated with ozonation for the efficient treatment of tannery wastewater. The results show that the integrated process was able to achieve high removal efficiencies for COD, TSS, TKN, surfactants and colour with residual concentrations much lower than the current discharge limits. Furthermore, the process was characterised by a very low sludge production (i.e., 0.1 kg dry sludge/m3 of treated wastewater) with interesting repercussions on treatment costs (about 1 € per m3 of wastewater).  相似文献

Biological treatment of saline wastewater by conventional activated sludge culture usually results in low removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) because of plasmolysis of the organisms at high salt concentrations. Since salt removal operations by physicochemical processes before biological treatment are costly, a salt-tolerant organism (Halobacter halobium) was used for effective biological treatment of saline wastewater in this study. Halobacter halobium was used in activated sludge culture for COD removal from saline wastewater (1–5% salt) by fed-batch operation of an aeration tank. Inclusion of Halobacter halobium into activated sludge culture improved the rate and extent of COD removals especially with salt above 2% (w/v).  相似文献

The performance of a pilot-scale biological nutrient removal process has been evaluated for 336 days, receiving the real municipal wastewater with a flowrate of 6.8 m3/d. The process incorporated an intermittent aeration reactor for enhancing the effluent quality, and a nitrification reactor packed with the porous polyurethane foam media for supporting the attached-growth of microorganism responsible for nitrification. The observation shows that the process enabled a relatively stable and high performance in both organics and nutrient removals. When the SRT was maintained at 12 days, COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus removals averaged as high as 89% at a loading rate of 0.42–3.95 kg COD/m3 d (corresponding to average influent concentration of 304 mg COD/L), 76% at the loading rate of 0.03–0.27 kg N/m3 d (with 37.1 mg TN/L on average), and 95% at the loading rate of 0.01–0.07 kg TP/m3 d (with 5.4 mg TP/L on average), respectively.  相似文献

The effect of influent COD/N ratio on biological nitrogen removal (BNR) from high-strength ammonium industrial wastewater was investigated. Experiments were conducted in a modified Ludzack–Ettinger pilot-plant configuration for 365 days. Total nitrification of an influent concentration of 1200 mg NH4+–N l−1 was obtained in this period. Influent COD/N ratios between 0.71 and 3.4 g COD g N−1 were tested by varying the nitrogen loading rate (NLR) supplied to the pilot plant. An exponential decrease of nitrification rate was observed when the influent COD/N ratio increased.

The experimental COD/N ratio for denitrification was 7.1±0.8 g COD g N−1 while the stoichiometric ratio was 4.2 g COD g N−1. This difference is attributable to the oxidation of organic matter in the anoxic reactor with the oxygen of the internal recycle. The influence of influent COD/N ratio on the treatment of high-strength ammonium industrial wastewater can be quantified with these results. The influence of COD/N ratio should be one of the main parameters in the design of biological nitrogen removal processes in industrial wastewater treatment.  相似文献

The need for preserving the environment is tightening regulations limiting the discharge of contaminants into water bodies. Nowadays most of the effort is done on the removal of more specific contaminants such as nutrients (N and P) and sulfurous compounds since they are becoming of great concern due to its impact on the quality of water bodies. There have been two recent discoveries of microbial conversions of nitrogenous compounds. One consisting on the capability of ammonia oxidizers of denitrify under certain conditions resulting in a new one-step method for the removal of N-compounds. The second has been named the ANAMMOX process, wherein ammonium is oxidized to dinitrogen gas with nitrite as the electron acceptor. Other developments consist of operational strategies aiming at obtaining the highest efficiency at removing nitrogen at lowest cost. One strategy consists of the partial nitrification to nitrite (only successful in the SHARON process) and subsequently either the heterotrophic denitrification of nitrites or its autotrophic reduction by ANAMMOX microorganisms. Another strategy consists of the coexistence of nitrifiers and denitrifiers in the same reactor by implementing high frequency oscillations on the oxygen level. The recent developments on biological phosphorous removal are based on the capacity of some denitrifying microorganisms to store ortho-phosphate intracellular as poly-phosphate in the presence of nitrate. These microorganisms store substrate (PHB) anaerobically which is further oxidized when nitrate is present. By extracting excess sludge from the anoxic phase, phosphate is removed from the system. Removing phosphate using nitrate instead of oxygen has the advantage of saving energy (oxygen input) and using less organic carbon. The microbial conversions of sulfurous compounds involve the metabolism of several different specific groups of bacteria such as sulfate reducing bacteria, sulfur and sulfide oxidizing bacteria, and phototrophic sulfur bacteria. Some of these microorganisms can simultaneously use nitrate, what has been reported as autotrophic denitrification by sulfur and sulfide oxidizing microorganisms. More recently, the anaerobic treatment of an industrial wastewater rich in organic matter, nitrogen and sulfate, reported a singular evolution of N and S compounds that initially was hypothesized as SURAMOX (SUlfate Reduction and AMmonia OXidation). The process could not have been verified nor reproduced and further investigations on the proposed SURAMOX mechanism have given no additional insights to those initial observations.  相似文献

Intensification of animal production led to high amounts of manure to be managed. Biological processes can contribute to a sustainable manure management. This paper presents the biological treatments available for the treatment of animal manure, mainly focusing on swine manure, including aerobic processes (nitrification, denitrification, enhanced biological phosphorus removal) and anaerobic digestion. These processes are discussed in terms of pollution removal, ammonia and greenhouse gas emissions (methane and nitrous oxide) and pathogen removal. Application of emerging processes such as partial nitrification and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) applied to animal manure is also considered. Finally, perspectives and future challenges for the research concerning biological treatments are highlighted in this paper.  相似文献

Manure processing could help farmers to effectively manage nitrogen (N) surplus load. Many pig farms have to treat wastewater. Piggery wastewater treatment is a complex challenge, due to the high COD and N concentrations and low C/N ratio. Anaerobic digestion (AD) could be a convenient pre-treatment, particularly from the energetic view point and farm income, but this causes further reduction of C/N ratio and makes denitrification difficult. N removal can only be obtained integrating anaerobic/aerobic treatment by taking into account the best use of electron donors. Experiences gained in Italy during development of integrated biological treatment approaches for swine manure, from bench to full scale, are reported in this paper. Solid/liquid separation as pre-treatment of raw manure is an efficient strategy to facilitate liquid fraction treatment without significantly lowering C/N ratio. In Italy, two full scale SBRs showed excellent efficiency and reliability. Current renewable energy policy and incentives makes economically attractive the application of AD to the separated solid fraction using high solid anaerobic digester (HSAD) technology. Economic evaluation showed that energy production can reduce costs up to 60%, making sustainable the overall treatment.  相似文献

Distributed state-type simulations (based on modeling of individual bacteria as they move through a reactor system) predicted a greater sensitivity of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) performance to endogenous degradation than did conventional, "lumped"-type simulations (based on average biomass compositions). Recent research has indicated that the variable hydraulic residence times experienced by individual microbial storage product accumulating bacteria in systems with completely mixed reactors tend to produce populations with diverse microbial storage product contents (distributed states). Endogenous degradation in EBPR systems is of particular interest because the polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) responsible for EBPR rely on the accumulation of three different storage products that may be endogenously degraded. Simulations indicated that as endogenous degradation rates of microbial storage products were increased, EBPR performance decreased more rapidly according to the distributed approach than according to the lumped approach. State profile analysis demonstrated that as these rates increased, the population fraction with depleted storage products also increased, and this tended to increase the error in calculated biokinetic rates by the lumped approach. Simulations based on recently reported endogenous rate coefficients also suggested large differences between distributed and lumped predictions of EBPR performance. These results demonstrated that endogenous decay processes may play a more important role in EBPR than predicted by the lumped approach. This suggests a need for further research to determine endogenous process rates, and for incorporation of this information to distributed-type simulators, as this should lead to improved accuracy of EBPR simulations.

Microbial community composition and function in wastewater treatment plants   总被引:19,自引:0,他引:19
Biological wastewater treatment has been applied for more than a century to ameliorate anthropogenic damage to the environment. But only during the last decade the use of molecular tools allowed to accurately determine the composition, and dynamics of activated sludge and biofilm microbial communities. Novel, in many cases yet not cultured bacteria were identified to be responsible for filamentous bulking and foaming as well as phosphorus and nitrogen removal in these systems. Now, methods are developed to infer the in situ physiology of these bacteria. Here we provide an overview of what is currently known about the identity and physiology of some of the microbial key players in activated sludge and biofilm systems. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Hydraulic characteristics of biological wastewater treatment systems were shown to affect bacterial state distributions and system performance through mathematical simulations. The term "state" is used here to mean the microbial storage product and biomass content of a bacterium. The traditional approach to simulating biological treatment processes assumes "lumped" (average) states, rather than accounting for variable states across bacterial populations. Distributed states were previously suggested as critical to enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR), but the factors that cause distributed states were not evaluated. A primary driver for distributed state development is variable hydraulic experiences of bacteria as they cycle through completely mixed reactors, and so process characteristics that affect hydraulics were hypothesized to affect state distributions. Two design characteristics affecting system hydraulics were evaluated using a new distributed state simulation program (DisSimulator 1.0): total hydraulic residence time (HRT) and numbers of reactors in series. Distributed predictions consistently predicted worse EBPR performance than did the lumped approach. Increasing HRTs (with constant solids retention times) tended to increase state distributions, to increase the differences between lumped and distributed simulation predictions, and to decrease predicted EBPR performance. As the numbers of reactors in series increased, distributed predictions tended to converge with lumped simulation predictions. Distributed simulations tended to predict a greater benefit to using reactors in series than did lumped simulations. This work provides guidance for new strategies to improve EBPR by minimizing state distributions. The targeted hydraulic characteristics may be more important to EBPR than previously recognized due to their effects on distributed states.  相似文献

A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system is demonstrated to biologically remove nitrogen, phosphorus and chemical oxygen demand (COD) to very low levels from abattoir wastewater. Each 6 h cycle contained three anoxic/anaerobic and aerobic sub-cycles with wastewater fed at the beginning of each anoxic/anaerobic period. The step-feed strategy was applied to avoid high-level build-up of nitrate or nitrite during nitrification, and therefore to facilitate the creation of anaerobic conditions required for biological phosphorus removal. A high degree removal of total phosphorus (>98%), total nitrogen (>97%) and total COD (>95%) was consistently and reliably achieved after a 3-month start-up period. The concentrations of total phosphate and inorganic nitrogen in the effluent were consistently lower than 0.2 mg P l−1 and 8 mg N l−1, respectively. Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that the sludge was enriched in Accumulibacter spp. (20–40%), a known polyphosphate accumulating organism, whereas the known glycogen accumulating organisms were almost absent. The SBR received two streams of abattoir wastewater, namely the effluent from a full-scale anaerobic pond (75%) and the effluent from a lab-scale high-rate pre-fermentor (25%), both receiving raw abattoir wastewater as feed. The pond effluent contained approximately 250 mg N l−1 total nitrogen and 40 mg P l−1 of total phosphorus, but relatively low levels of soluble COD (around 500 mg l−1). The high-rate lab-scale pre-fermentor, operated at 37°C and with a sludge retention time of 1 day, proved to be a cheap and effective method for providing supplementary volatile fatty acids allowing for high-degree of biological nutrient removal from abattoir wastewater.  相似文献

Nanoparticles (NPs), with at least one dimension less than 100?nm, are substantially employed in consumer and industrial products due to their specific physical and chemical properties. The wide uses of engineered NPs inevitably cause their release into the environment, especially wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, it is essential to systematically assess their potential impact on biological wastewater treatment and subsequent sewage sludge digestion. This review aims to provide such support. First, this paper reviews the recent advances on the analytical developments and nano–bio interface of NPs in wastewater and sewage sludge treatment. The effects of NPs on biological wastewater treatment and sewage sludge digestion and related mechanisms are discussed in detail. Finally, the key questions that need to be answered in the future are pointed out, which include on-line revelation of the changes of NPs in sewage and sludge environments, in situ assessment of the variations of microorganisms involved in these biological systems after they are exposed to NPs. Differentiation of the contribution of individual toxicity mechanisms to these systems, and the identification of under what conditions the nanoparticle-induced toxicity will be increased or decreased are also considered.  相似文献

In this study, the performance of the anoxic filter bed and biological wriggle bed-ozone biological aerated filter (AFB-BWB-O3-BAF) process treating real textile dyeing wastewater was investigated. After more than 2 month process operation, the average effluent COD concentration of the AFB, BWB, O3-BAF were 704.8 mg/L, 294.6 mg/L and 128.8 mg/L, with HRT being 8.1-7.7 h, 9.2 h and 5.45 h, respectively. Results showed that the effluent COD concentration of the AFB decreased with new carriers added and the average removal COD efficiency was 20.2%. During operation conditions, HRT of the BWB and O3-BAF was increased, resulting in a decrease in the effluent COD concentration. However, on increasing the HRT, the COD reduction capability expressed by the unit carrier COD removal loading of the BWB reactor increased, while that of the O3-BAF reactor decreased. This study is a beneficial attempt to utilize the AFB-BWB-O3-BAF combine process for textile wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Behavior of lipids in biological wastewater treatment processes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Lipids (characterized as oils, greases, fats and long-chain fatty acids) are important organic components of wastewater. Their amount, for example, in municipal wastewater is approximately 30–40% of the total chemical oxygen demand. The concern over the behavior of lipids in biological treatment systems has led to many studies, which have evaluated their removal, but still the exact behavior of lipids in these processes is not well understood. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge of how lipids/fatty acids affect both aerobic and anaerobic processes and specific methods that have been used in an attempt to enhance their removal from wastewater. Overall, the literature shows that lipids/fatty acids are readily removed by biological treatment methods, inhibitory to microbial growth as well as the cause of foaming, growth of filamentous bacteria and floc flotation.  相似文献

Biocalorimetry has proved to be a useful tool for scale up and control of bioreactors. The findings reported here are fundamental data required for scale up and control of a reactor for the treatment of saline tannery wastewater. The study deals with biokinetics of a halo-tolerant bacteriaPseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from tannery saline wastewater (soak liquor). Batch experiments were performed in a biocalorimeter and the isolated strain was grown in a glucose-limited mineral salt medium (MSM) at optimized growth conditions. Tessier model is found to fit well for the growth ofP. aeruginosa in biocalorimeter. Biokinetic constants are evaluated and simulation is done to validate experimental results with theoretical values. Respirogram and heat profiles are seen to follow the biomass growth curve. Oxycalorific coefficient is validated with the theoretical values and those noticed in the published literature. There is a good correlation between experimentally determined heat yields and the theoretical values predicted by elemental and enthalpy balances. The heat yield and biomass yield values indicated the behavior of the isolated organism in a substrate-limited well defined growth media (MSM)  相似文献

Three types of adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in which the online monitoring parameters served as the input variable were employed to predict suspended solids (SSeff), chemical oxygen demand (CODeff), and pHeff in the effluent from a biological wastewater treatment plant in industrial park. Artificial neural network (ANN) was also used for comparison. The results indicated that ANFIS statistically outperforms ANN in terms of effluent prediction. When predicting, the minimum mean absolute percentage errors of 2.90, 2.54 and 0.36% for SSeff, CODeff and pHeff could be achieved using ANFIS. The maximum values of correlation coefficient for SSeff, CODeff, and pHeff were 0.97, 0.95, and 0.98, respectively. The minimum mean square errors of 0.21, 1.41 and 0.00, and the minimum root mean square errors of 0.46, 1.19 and 0.04 for SSeff, CODeff, and pHeff could also be achieved.  相似文献
