Two southern Illinois reservoirs were investigated with contrasting size structures of yellow bass (Morone mississippiensis) to compare growth, mortality and recruitment patterns. Yellow bass were collected from Crab Orchard and Little Grassy lakes during April–May 2009 using AC electrofishing. Total length and weight were recorded and sagittal otoliths sectioned and aged by two readers. Increments between otolith annuli were measured and the Weisberg linear growth model was used to assess age and environmental (growth year) effects on individual growth for fish from the two lakes. Von Bertalanffy growth models indicated faster growth and a greater maximum total length for yellow bass in Little Grassy Lake. However, growth of fish in Little Grassy Lake nearly ceased after age 4. The Weisberg model indicated differences in individual growth rate between the two lakes that were consistent across years (age effects were significant, but growth year effects and the age‐growth year interaction were not). Inter‐lake differences in fish growth were present up to age 3. Recruitment was relatively stable in Crab Orchard, with year classes up to age 7 observed. Recruitment was more erratic in Little Grassy, with age 5 being the dominant year class and fish up to age 11 present. Differences in growth and recruitment patterns for yellow bass in the two lakes may be attributed to substantial inter‐lake differences in turbidity, morphoedaphic index, or yellow bass density. Maximum age of yellow bass (age 11) was higher than previously reported for this species, likely due to the use of otoliths to age fish rather than scales. This study provides baseline information on age and growth, mortality, recruitment, and size structure of yellow bass that can be compared to data in future studies to elucidate factors influencing population dynamics of this species.  相似文献

The number of plerocercoids of the bass tapeworm, Proteocephalus ambloplitis, in wild largemouth bass was negatively correlated (r = -0.94) with the number of Neoechinorhynchus sp. Competitive inhibition between the 2 parasites appeared to exist. Similarly, the numbers of Neoechinorhynchus sp. in wild bass decreased when adult bass tapeworms were present in the intestine. Proteocephalus ambloplitis plerocercoids used to challenge bass vaccinated with either P. ambloplitis adult or Neoechinorhynchus sp. antigens were smaller (P less than 0.05) when recovered than those used to challenge control bass. Based on preliminary results, both antigens might have enabled the bass to limit growth and/or development of the invading bass tapeworm, plerocercoids. Cross-protective immunity may be the reason for this occurrence, in which case, it could offer an explanation for competitive inhibition existing between P. ambloplitis and Neoechinorhynchus sp.  相似文献

In some systems, the identity of a prey species' dominant predator(s) may not be constant over time. In cases in which a prey species exhibits different responses to various predator species, such changes in predator identity may have population-wide consequences. Our goals were to determine (1) whether mortality of and refuge use by the grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, were predator-specific, and (2) how effects of prey size and habitat interacted with predator type. Striped bass (Morone saxatilis) exerted twice as much predation pressure as mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus), although not equally as great on large (female) and small (male) shrimp. Mummichog, which fed preferentially on large shrimp, forced a partitioning of habitat between the two shrimp size classes. In contrast, large and small shrimp occupied similar habitats when subjected to striped bass, which fed on both size classes equally. Refuge use of grass shrimp depended on predator type. In the presence of mummichog, which occupied shallower depths in the water column than striped bass, shrimp stayed deep and close to structural habitat. Striped bass, which were deeper, caused shrimp to move high in the water column away from structural habitat. When both predators were present, shrimp distribution was similar to that when only striped bass were present, striped bass predation rate was enhanced, and overall mortality was higher than with either predator alone. Results suggest that at times when mummichogs are the dominant predators, large (female) shrimp experience higher predation than small (male) shrimp and are physically separated from their potential mates. When striped bass are more abundant, male and female shrimp may share a similar, shallow, less structure-oriented distribution and be subjected to higher mortality. When both predators are present, mortality rates may be higher still. This predator-, size-, and habitat-specificity of grass shrimp behavior suggests significant population and distribution consequences of fluctuating predator guilds and fluctuating cover of structural habitats in the field.  相似文献

The distribution and behavior of Florida largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides floridanus, and their main prey (sunfish, genus Lepomis, and the cichlid Tilapia mariae) were studied in southern Florida to determine how fish behave in the simplified habitats found in channelized rivers. Time budgets were constructed from focal animal observations on 69 bass. Patterns of behavior associated with hunting were performed during a significantly higher proportion of the time when bass were in vegetated habitats. Scan samples of the behavior of 236 observed bass revealed that hunting was more common in areas of high structural complexity. Only 38% of observed bass were solitary, with the majority occurring in groups with either conspecifics or in mixed-species groups with similar sized bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus. Largemouth bass (n=1014) and sunfish (n=1372) were significantly more abundant in areas with vegetation and were almost entirely absent from the water column in the center of the canal. All species of fish avoided the water column, where currents were swift and no cover was available. The structure of the habitat appears to be important in the way largemouth bass organize their activity patterns. This suggests that habitat availability in channelized rivers significantly influences important behaviors such as hunting, thus potentially altering energy budgets and population dynamics of both predator and prey.  相似文献

Do the effects of piscivorous largemouth bass cascade to the plankton?   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Ecologists have hypothesized that an increase in the biomass of piscivorous fish in lakes will cause a decrease in populations of planktivorous fish, an increase in the size of herbivorous zooplankton and a decrease in the biomass of phytoplankton. Here we present an experimental test of whether the effects of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) cascade to the planktivorous fish, zooplankton and phytoplankton of a 15-ha water storage reservoir. A pilot study indicated that the reservoir was eutrophic with dense populations of planktivorous fish dominated by threadfin shad (Dorosoma petenense). No piscovorous fish were present in the reservoir. We conducted a one-month mesocosm experiment using water and plankton from the reservoir showing that the presence of threadfin shad reduced large-sized zooplankton and increased the productivity and biomass of phytoplankton. To test whether the effects of piscivorous fish could cascade to the plankton, we assessed the effects of the addition of piscivorous largemouth bass on the planktivorous fish, zooplankton and biomass of phytoplankton of the reservoir by monitoring the reservoir during the year before and the two years after largemouth bass were stocked. In the second year after the addition of largemouth bass, the number of planktivorous fish decreased and the relative abundance of threadfin shad declined. Although the abundance of cladocerans increased after the addition of largemouth bass, the average size of zooplankton did not change. We did not detect changes in chlorophyll a, Secchi depth, or concentrations of total phosphorus and total nitrogen as a result of the addition of largemouth bass.  相似文献

Two previously undescribed species of myxozoan parasites were observed in the gills of bass inhabiting the Potomac and James River basins. They are described using morphological characteristics and small-subunit (SSU) rDNA gene sequences. Both were taxonomically identified as new species of Myxobolus; Myxobolus branchiarum n. sp. was found exclusively in smallmouth bass, and Myxobolus micropterii n. sp. was found in largemouth and smallmouth bass. Small, spherical, white plasmodia of M. branchiarum from smallmouth bass were observed grossly in the gills; these plasmodia had an average length of 320.3 μm and width of 246.1 μm. The development of the plasmodia is intralamellar in the secondary lamellae of the gills. Mature spores were pyriform in shape with a length of 12.8 ± 1.4 (8.1-15.1) μm and width of 6.9 ± 1.1 (4.0-9.0) μm. Analysis of SSU rDNA identified M. branchiarum in a sister-group to 3 species of Henneguya , although morphologically caudal appendages were absent. Myxobolus micropterii observed in the gills of largemouth and smallmouth bass had larger, ovoid, cream-colored plasmodia with an average length of 568.1 μm and width of 148.1 μm. The cysts developed at the distal end of the gill filament within the primary lamellae. The mature spores were ovoid in shape with a length of 10.8 ± 0.7 (9.2-12.2) μm and width of 10.6 ± 0.6 (9.0-11.8) μm. SSU rDNA analysis placed M. micropterii in a sister group with Henneguya lobosa and Myxobolus oliveirai . The highest prevalence of M. branchiarum was observed in the gills of bass collected from the Cowpasture River (50.9%). Prevalence was 44.6% in bass from the Potomac River and only 4.3% in bass collected from the Shenandoah River. A seasonal study of M. branchiarum , which included both infected and uninfected smallmouth bass, determined that a significantly higher intensity was observed in the spring than in the summer (P < 0.001) or fall (P = 0.004). In an analysis excluding uninfected bass, a higher intensity was observed in the spring than in the summer (P = 0.001) or fall (P = 0.008). Striped bass Morone saxatilis populations in drainages along the Gulf of Mexico coast (Gulf) were depleted in the 1950s and 1960s, probably because of anthropogenic influences. It is believed that only the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (A-C-F) river system continually supported a naturally reproducing population of Gulf lineage. Striped bass juveniles of Atlantic coast (Atlantic) ancestry were introduced to restore population abundances in the A-C-F from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s and in many other Gulf rivers from the 1960s to the present. We previously identified mtDNA polymorphisms that were unique to ? 60% of striped bass from the A-C-F and which confirmed the continued successful natural reproduction of striped bass of Gulf maternal ancestry within the system. However, the genetic relatedness of the extant A-C-F population to ‘pure’ Gulf striped bass was not addressed. In this study, we determined the frequency of a diagnostic mtDNA XbaI polymorphism in samples of ‘pure’ Gulf striped bass that were collected from the A-C-F prior to the introduction of Atlantic fish, that were obtained from museum collections, and that were originally preserved in formalin. PCR primers were developed that allowed for amplification of a 191-bp mtDNA fragment that contained the diagnostic XbaI restriction site. Using RFLP and direct sequence analyses of the PCR amplicons, we found no significant differences in mtDNA XbaI genotype frequencies between the archived samples and extant A-C-F samples collected over a 15-year period. This indicates that significant maternally mediated introgression of Atlantic mtDNA genomes into the A-C-F gene pool has not occurred. Additionally, we found no evidence of the unique Gulf mtDNA genotype in striped bass from extant populations in Texas, Louisiana and the Mississippi River. These results highlight the importance of the A-C-F as a repository of striped bass to restore extirpated Gulf populations and the potential use of museum collections in retrospective population studies.  相似文献

Nonresident (introduced) largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) from Boundary Reservoir, Saskatchewan were examined for helminths. Four species of parasites were found (Diplostomum sp., Proteocephalus ambloplitis, Pomphorhynchus bulbocolli, and Contracaecum sp.). Contracaecum sp. larvae were absent in age-0 and age-1 bass, but prevalence and mean intensity increased with age for bass age-2 or older. Similarly, the prevalence and mean intensity of P. ambloplitis plerocercoids in bass were low until age-2; older bass harbored significantly more plerocercoids. Analysis of stomach contents indicates that this pattern of recruitment for Contracaecum sp. and P. ambloplitis is probably due to increased feeding by largemouth bass on aquatic insects and cannibalism after age-2, respectively. Although Contracaecum sp. may have been established in the reservoir prior to the introduction of bass, we are certain that P. ambloplitis was introduced via stocking with infected fingerlings.  相似文献

Predation risk can affect habitat selection by water column stream fish and crayfish, but little is known regarding effects of predation risk on habitat selection by benthic fish or assemblages of fish and crayfish. I used comparative studies and manipulative field experiments to determine whether, (1) habitat selection by stream fish and crayfish is affected by predation risk, and (2) benthic fish, water column fish, and crayfish differ in their habitat selection and response to predation risk. Snorkeling was used to observe fish and crayfish in, (1) unmanipulated stream pools with and without large smallmouth bass predators (Micropterus dolomieui >200 mm total length, TL) and (2) manipulated stream pools before and after addition of a single large smallmouth bass, to determine if prey size and presence of large fish predators affected habitat selection. Observations of microhabitat use were compared with microhabitat availability to determine microhabitat selection. Small fish (60–100 mm TL, except darters that were 30–100 mm TL) and crayfish (40–100 mm rostrum to telson length; TL) had significantly reduced densities in pools with large bass, whereas densities of large fish and crayfish (> 100 mm TL) did not differ significantly between pools with and without large bass. Small orangethroat darters (Etheostoma spectabile), northern crayfish (Orconectes virilis), and creek chubs (Semotilus atromaculatus) showed significantly greater densities in pools without large bass. The presence of large smallmouth bass did not significantly affect depths selected by fish and crayfish, except minnows, which were found significantly more often at medium depths when bass were present. Small minnows and large and small crayfish showed the greatest response to additions of bass to stream pools by moving away from bass locations and into shallow water. Small darters and sunfish showed an intermediate response, whereas large minnows showed no significant response to bass additions. Response to predation risk was dependent on prey size and species, with preferred prey, crayfish and small minnows, showing the greatest response. Small benthic fish, such as darters, are intermediate between small water column fish and crayfish and large water column fish in their risk of predation from large smallmouth bass.  相似文献

文章研究了华中地区池塘养殖大口黑鲈(Micropterus salmoides)卵巢的发育规律, 分析了水温与光照条件变化对卵巢发育的影响, 探究了大口黑鲈反季节繁殖的方法, 旨在充分利用本地区的气候条件, 化劣势为优势, 从根本上解决本地大口黑鲈产业所面临的问题。实验采用形态学、组织学等方法比较分析了大口黑鲈卵巢发育特征, 采用人工控温和人工促熟的方法探究了温度和性激素对大口黑鲈性腺启动发育的影响。研究发现, 华中地区大口黑鲈雌鱼性腺指数(GSI)周年变化在0.63%—7.95%, 10月中旬至12月初水温由20.6℃降至11.0℃期间, 卵巢开始发育至Ⅲ期, 并以Ⅲ期越冬, 至4月中旬繁殖产卵, 5月底结束, 繁殖前约80%的雌鱼绝对繁殖力在4.5万—6.5万粒, 但受水温升高的影响, 卵巢中15%成熟卵母细胞未能产出而逐步退化, 产卵结束时仍有一半以上卵未产出(GSI为4.6%); 雌鱼GSI与肠系膜脂肪系数(MFI)、肝体比(HSI)在10月份至次年4月份呈显著负相关(P<0.05), 表明在此期间, 机体储存的营养物质部分转移至性腺, 优先保证性腺发育。在大口黑鲈反季节繁殖实验中, 采用井水[水温(20±1)℃]降温和控温处理的方法能够促进大口黑鲈性腺的启动发育, 经过3个月处理, 控温组雌鱼卵巢发育至Ⅳ期末, GSI达到4.06%, 而对照组雌鱼卵巢处于Ⅲ期, GSI为2.52%, 两组差异显著(P<0.05), 两组雄鱼精巢均发育至Ⅳ期末, 控温组GSI达0.89%, 对照组为0.73%, 这表明可以通过温度处理来调控大口黑鲈性腺的发育。最后针对反季节繁殖中亲本的培育方法和处理时间等进行了总结, 以期为后续培育反季节大口黑鲈提供依据。  相似文献

This study addressed the problem of local patterns of host specificity among Ancyrocephalinae (Monogenoidea) on bass and sunfish species, when the hosts occur in different species combinations in separate ponds. One hundred fifty-three fish of the Centrarchidae, from 4 study sites in Nebraska, were collected. Host species included bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), green sunfish (L. cyanellus), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), white crappie (P. annularis), and rock bass (Ambloplites rupestris). These fish occurred in different species combinations, depending on the pond sampled. Results indicated that several centrarchid species could inhabit the same pond and yet support distinct monogene communities. Clavunculus bursatus, Onchocleidus helicis, O. principalis, and Syncleithrum fusiformis were found only on largemouth bass, regardless of what other centrarchids were present in a particular pond. Haplocleidus dispar occurred on green sunfish, bluegill, largemouth bass, and black crappie, and H. furcatus occurred on both bluegill and largemouth bass. Onchocleidus cyanellus and O. ferox were found on both bluegill and green sunfish. Rock bass were present in only 1 of the 4 ponds, but were not infected with any monogenes, even though co-occurring centrarchids were often heavily infected. Largemouth bass had the most diverse ancyrocephaline communities. The degree of parasite host specificity among these monogenes was inversely related to the diversity of host species present in a particular pond. In general, the parasites were more host specific than might be inferred from the literature; parasite species did not necessarily colonize supposedly receptive host species even when the latter were present, and host relatedness was the major factor in determining whether host species shared a common parasite species.  相似文献

Summary Predator-prey interactions were studied among a small prey fish (the johnny darter Etheostoma nigrum) and two predators (crayfish Orconectes rusticus and smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieui) with complementary foraging behaviors. When only smallmouth bass were present, darters reduced activity to 6% of control rates and spent most of the time hiding under tile shelters. When only crayfish were present, darter activity and shelter-use were similar to controls. When both crayfish and bass were present, an interaction occurred. Darters, normally inactive in the presence of bass, were often forced to move by approaching crayfish and thus activity increased to 19% of control rates. Also, darters were often evicted from shelters by intruding crayfish. Thus, crayfish increased the vulnerability of small fish to bass by evicting them from shelters and causing increased activity. Conversely, bass increased the vulnerability of small fish to crayfish by forcing these fish to seek cover under shelters occupied by crayfish. Intimidation effects of bass on darters last for some time. After a 30-min exposure to bass, darters showed reduced activity and increased shelter use lasting at least 24 h after the bass was removed. Over a fifteen month period, beginning October, 1974, approximately 13 500 centrarchids were examined for evidence of infection with metacercaria of Clinostomum marginatum. Species checked included Lepomis macrochirus, L. gulosus, L. auritus, Pomoxis nigromaculatus and Micropterus salmoides. The study site was Par Pond (South Carolina, U.S.A.), an 1120 ha reservoir receiving thermal effluent from a nuclear production reactor. Except for the largemouth bass, M. salmoides , infection percentages among the five species were less than 1%. Among bass, infection varied seasonally, being highest from January to June. From the spring highs of approximately 25 %, the percentages dropped to lows of < 10% in July and August; there was a jump in September-October to another peak of 30% and then a steady decline through December when infection percentages were again less than 10%. Neither body condition nor length of the bass were related to infection percentage or metacercaria density. Infection percentage could not be related to the influence of thermal effluent. Infection percentages did vary from location to location within the Par Pond system. A significant rank correlation could be established between infection percentage and the amount of littoral zone present in the locality from which the bass were taken. It is suggested that the local 'bay effects' are the result of limited home and foraging ranges of the bass in relation to the amounts of littoral zone present in various locations of the reservoir.  相似文献

Twenty striped bass Morone saxatilis and 20 hybrid tilapia Oreochromis niloticus x O. mossambicus x O. aureus each received a single intramuscular injection of 1.6 x 10(6) colony forming units per gram body weight of Mycobacterium marinum. Striped bass manifested significantly greater clinical and microscopic disease compared to tilapia. Whereas all the striped bass had died or were clinically ill by Day 8 post-infection, there was no apparent disruption of normal behaviour, physical appearance, or growth in any of the sacrificed or surviving tilapia. Histologically, granulomas in striped bass were generally larger and less discrete, with a higher proportion of heavily vacuolated macrophages, and large cores of necrotic cells. Visceral granulomas in tilapia were smaller, with a higher proportion of epithelioid macrophages, more pigment-containing cells, more peripheral lymphocytes, and virtually no central necrosis. Visceral granulomas were 18-fold more numerous in striped bass than in tilapia. Based upon histomorphometric data, mean proportions of acid-fast bacteria within pronephros granulomas were 4-fold greater in striped bass than tilapia, and striped bass granulomas averaged more than twice as large as tilapia granulomas. In the anterior kidney of striped bass, a positive correlation existed between mean mycobacterial proportions and mean necrosis scores. In tilapia, mean mycobacterial proportions correlated negatively with mean granuloma numbers, whereas there was no correlation between these parameters in striped bass. Results suggest that intrinsic functional differences in the immunologic systems of striped bass and hybrid tilapia may contribute to inter-species variation in mycobacteriosis susceptibility.  相似文献

1. Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) have been widely introduced to fresh waters throughout the world to promote recreational fishing opportunities. In the Pacific Northwest (U.S.A.), upstream range expansions of predatory bass, especially into subyearling salmon‐rearing grounds, are of increasing conservation concern, yet have received little scientific inquiry. Understanding the habitat characteristics that influence bass distribution and the timing and extent of bass and salmon overlap will facilitate the development of management strategies that mitigate potential ecological impacts of bass. 2. We employed a spatially continuous sampling design to determine the extent of bass and subyearling Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) sympatry in the North Fork John Day River (NFJDR), a free‐flowing river system in the Columbia River Basin that contains an upstream expanding population of non‐native bass. Extensive (i.e. 53 km) surveys were conducted over 2 years and during an early and late summer period of each year, because these seasons provide a strong contrast in the river’s water temperature and flow condition. Classification and regression trees were applied to determine the primary habitat correlates of bass abundance at reach and channel‐unit scales. 3. Our study revealed that bass seasonally occupy up to 22% of the length of the mainstem NFJDR where subyearling Chinook salmon occur, and the primary period of sympatry between these species was in the early summer and not during peak water temperatures in late summer. Where these species co‐occurred, bass occupied 60–76% of channel units used by subyearling Chinook salmon in the early summer and 28–46% of the channel units they occupied in the late summer. Because these rearing salmon were well below the gape limitation of bass, this overlap could result in either direct predation or sublethal effects of bass on subyearling Chinook salmon. The upstream extent of bass increased 10–23 km (2009 and 2010, respectively) as stream temperatures seasonally warmed, but subyearling Chinook salmon were also found farther upstream during this time. 4. Our multiscale analysis suggests that bass were selecting habitat based on antecedent thermal history at a broad scale, and if satisfactory temperature conditions were met, mesoscale habitat features (i.e. channel‐unit type and depth) played an additional role in determining bass abundance. The upstream extent of bass in the late summer corresponded to a high‐gradient geomorphic discontinuity in the NFJDR, which probably hindered further upstream movements of bass. The habitat determinants and upstream extent of bass were largely consistent across years, despite marked differences in the magnitude and timing of spring peak flows prior to bass spawning. 5. The overriding influence of water temperature on smallmouth bass distribution suggests that managers may be able limit future upstream range expansions of bass into salmon‐rearing habitat by concentrating on restoration activities that mitigate climate‐ or land‐use‐related stream warming. These management activities could be prioritised to capitalise on survival bottlenecks in the life history of bass and spatially focused on landscape knick points such as high‐gradient discontinuities to discourage further upstream movements of bass.  相似文献

In this paper we describe the cloning, expression and structural study by modelling techniques of the CD8alpha from sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.). The sea bass CD8alpha cDNA is comprised of 1490 bp and is translated in one reading frame to give a protein of 217 amino acids, with a predicted 26 amino acids signal peptide, a 88 bp 5'-UTR and a 748 bp 3'-UTR. A multiple alignment of CD8alpha from sea bass with other known CD8alpha sequences shows the conservation of most amino acid residues involved in the peculiar structural domains found within CD8alpha's. Cysteine residues that are involved in disulfide bonding to form the V domain are conserved. In contrast, an extra cysteine residue found in most mammals in this region is not present in sea bass. The transmembrane and cytoplasmic regions are the most conserved regions within the molecule in the alignment analysis. However, the motif (CXCP) that is thought to be responsible for binding p56lck is missing in the sea bass sequence. Phylogenetic analysis conducted using amino acid sequences showed that sea bass CD8alpha grouped with other known teleost sequences and that three different clusters were formed by the mammalian, avian and fish CD8alpha sequences. The thymus was the tissue with the highest CD8alpha expression, followed by gut, gills, peripheral blood leukocytes and spleen. Lower CD8alpha mRNA levels were found in head kidney, liver and brain. It was possible to create a partial 3D model using the human and mouse structures as template. The CD8alpha 11-120 amino acid region was taken into consideration and the best obtained 3D model shows the presence of ten beta-strands, involving about 50% of the sequence. The global structure was defined as an immunoglobulin-like beta-sandwich made of two anti-parallel sheets. Reproduction of nodavirus disease was performed by experimental infection of sea bass eggs during fertilization or at larval stage 4 with 2 genetically distinguishable nodavirus strains (Sb1 and Sb2) isolated from sea bass collected along the Atlantic and Mediterranean French coast. The pathogenicity of the virus strains was assigned after detection of the virus by ELISA and immunohistochemistry (IHC). The Atlantic (Sb1) strain was more pathogenic than the Mediterranean (Sb2) strain during the fertilization step whilst both strains were pathogenic following experimental exposure of 4 d old larvae. Virus lesions developed in the brain 4 to 6 d following experimental exposure. Experimental ELISA proved very sensitive for detecting the nodavirus in Sb1 or Sb2 experimentally infected larvae, as well as in naturally infected sea bass larvae collected in French hatcheries or in barramundi larvae reared in the Pacific area. The development of an ELISA specific for the 2 nodavirus strains isolated from the sea bass should be useful for the detection of the virus, in addition to other techniques recommended by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE).  相似文献

One hundred and fifty largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) were caught during the mid-winter and mid-summer months in Par Pond, an 1120 ha cooling reservoir located on Savannah River Plant near Aiken, SC. Equal numbers of fish were taken from ambient and thermally altered (> 10° C ambient) areas of the lake. The total length and weight of each bass was noted, along with the presence or absence of lesions associated with red-sore disease (caused by the bacterium, Aeromonas hydrophila and the ciliate, Epistylis sp.). Blood was drawn, by heart puncture, from each bass and the following haematological parameters measured: haematocrit, haemoglobin, iron, total iron-binding capacity, thyroxine, sodium and potassium. Only the total iron-binding capacity was significantly higher in bass with red-sore disease; none of the other blood parameters were significantly different in infected and uninfected bass. Bass from thermally altered locations had consistently higher haematocrits during both summer and winter. Bass from thermal and ambient locations were not different with respect to iron, iron-binding capacity, sodium or potassium levels. However, bass taken during summer months had higher levels of circulating iron than individuals in winter months. Summer bass had higher thyroxine levels than bass in winter. These results are discussed in terms of their relationship to red-sore disease, season and the impact of thermal effluent.  相似文献

Vibrio harveyi was isolated from internal organs or ulcers of diseased and apparently healthy gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) cultured in several fish farms located on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The prevalence of the bacterium was significantly higher in European sea bass than in gilthead sea bream, and was closely related to the season in both fish species, occurring almost exclusively on warm months (June to November). After phenotypic characterization, a selection of forty five isolates from gilthead sea bream, sea bass, and several isolates previously obtained from common dentex (Dentex dentex) of the same area, were molecularly typed by automated ribotyping and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Cluster analysis of data established 8 RAPD types and 13 ribotypes among wild isolates, and the combination of both techniques allowed to define fourteen different groups and a clear discrimination of all outbreaks and samplings. Several strains isolated from diseased gilthead sea bream and sea bass and also from asymptomatic sea bream, were tested for virulence in both fish species by intracoelomic injection. All the isolates (11) were pathogenic for sea bass, with nine out of the eleven LD50 values ranging from 1.5 x 10(5) to 1.6 x 10(6) cfu/fish. Gilthead sea bream was unaffected by the seven tested strains, even by those more virulent for sea bass, and only one strain caused a 10% mortality at 4.2 x 10(7) cfu/fish. This is the first report on virulence of V. harveyi for sea bass.  相似文献

The striped bass Morone saxatilis population in the Savannah River (south-eastern U.S.A.) collapsed in the 1980s, and recent eorts to restore the population have resulted in increased catch-per-unit-eort (CPUE) of striped bass in the Savannah River Estuary (SRE). The abundance of eggs and larvae, however, remain well below historic levels. The primary cause of the population decline was remedied, and environmental conditions seem suitable for striped bass spawning. Regression analysis of data derived from ultrasonic imaging of 31 striped bass resulted in a statistical model that predicted ovary volume well (r2=0.95). The enumeration of oocytes from ovarian tissue samples and the prediction of ovary volume allowed fecundity to be estimated without sacrificing the fish. Oocyte maturation in Savannah River striped bass seemed to progress normally, with oocytes developing to final stages of maturity in larger fish (>750 mm L T). Additionally, fecundity estimates were comparable to a neighbouring striped bass population. The environmental cues needed to trigger development and release of striped bass oocytes into the SRE appeared to be present. If most of the striped bass females in the SRE are still young (<7 years), the ability to produce large numbers of eggs will be limited. As these young fish mature, egg production probably will increase and the density of striped bass eggs eventually will approach historic levels, provided suitable habitat and water quality are maintained.  相似文献
