四种杀虫剂亚致死剂量对中黑盲蝽发育和繁殖的影响   总被引:10,自引:1,他引:9

使用瓶膜法确定4种常用杀虫剂(毒死蜱、硫丹、氯氟氰菊酯和吡虫啉)对中黑盲蝽Adelphocoris suturalis Jakovlev 1日龄成虫的亚致死剂量(LC10,LC20和LC30),并研究了其对中黑盲蝽的亚致死效应。结果表明:4种杀虫剂L20剂量处理成虫均能降低雌雄虫的寿命,延长下一代卵的发育历期,但对卵的孵化率没有显著的影响;毒死蜱和硫丹能缩短产卵前期,氯氟氰菊酯和吡虫啉能降低产卵量。毒死蜱亚致死剂量LC10和LC30处理过的成虫与未处理过的成虫交叉配对后雌雄虫寿命均显著缩短;LC10各交叉处理能够缩短产卵历期,降低单雌产卵量和卵的孵化率,延长卵的发育历期;LC30♀×CK和LC30♀×LC30的下代若虫存活率为28.00%和36.36%,显著低于对照71.88%。结果说明这4种杀虫剂的亚致死剂量对中黑盲蝽生殖均有不利影响,接触杀虫剂与未接触杀虫剂的成虫交配对其后代也有不利影响。研究对于中黑盲蝽区域性综合防治具有一定的指导意义。  相似文献

The induction of phosphatidylcholine (PC) biosynthesis via the CDPcholine pathway in lung and liver of rats has been shown following the intratracheal administration of 1,1,1-trichloro-2m2-bis(p-chlorophenyl) ethane (DDT) (5 mg/100 g body weight) and endosulfan (1 mg/100 g body weight) for 3 days. Controls received only the vehicle solution (groundnut oil, 0.1 m1/100 g body weight). The treatment of DDT and endosulfan significantly increased the PC contents and the incorporation of radioactive [methyl-3H]choline into PC of lung and liver microsomes. The incorporation of radioactive [methyl-14C]methionine into microsomal PC of lung and liver was not affected significantly by treatment with either of the insecticides. 1,4,5,6,7-hexachloro-5-norbornene-2,3-dimethano cyclic sulfite (endosulfan) administration significantly increased the activity of choline kinase and phosphocholine cytidylyltransferase (both cytosolic and microsomal) of lung, whereas DDT increased the activity of only latter. In liver, both DDT and endosulfan administration significantly increased the activity of choline kinase and phosphocholine cytidylyltransferase (both cytosolic and microsomal). However, the activity of phosphocholinetransferase was not affected in both lung and liver microsomes of rats treated with these insecticides. The PC precursor pool sizes, choline and phosphorylcholine, of lung and liver tissues were not altered by DDT and endosulfan treatments. The present results suggest that the increased level of PC and incorporation of radioactive [methyl-3H]choline into microsomal PC could be the result of increased activity of choline kinase and phosphocholine cytidylyltransferase of lung and liver of rats following intratracheal administration of DDT and endosulfan.  相似文献

外源茉莉酸诱导枸杞对枸杞蚜生长发育和繁殖的影响   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
为了明确外源茉莉酸对枸杞的诱导抗性及其对害虫的影响,在室内25℃条件下用3种浓度的茉莉酸喷施枸杞苗木,以喷施丙酮+蒸馏水(配比1∶599)作为对照,测定了枸杞蚜在处理后苗木上的生长发育和繁殖情况。结果表明:外源茉莉酸诱导枸杞苗木后,枸杞蚜若虫发育历期延长,成虫寿命缩短、产仔量下降,枸杞蚜体重减轻,其影响程度与茉莉酸浓度有关。0.01 mmol/L茉莉酸诱导枸杞蚜若虫期最长,为4.93 d,比对照延长1.9 d。茉莉酸诱导成虫产仔量显著减少,且浓度越高产仔量越少,0.1 mmol/L浓度下产仔量为25头,比对照少19头。3种浓度的茉莉酸诱导均使枸杞蚜成虫寿命较对照缩短3 d左右。茉莉酸诱导对枸杞蚜体重的影响从3日龄后逐渐显现,5日龄时最显著,处理组与对照组蚜虫体重相差0.128~0.184 mg,对照组蚜虫平均重0.395 mg,0.01 mmol/L处理组蚜虫重量仅0.211 mg。  相似文献

The effects of sublethal concentrations of chlorpyrifos, cyfluthrin, and hydramethylnon on adult longevity and fecundity of German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.), were investigated. Longevity of males declined linearly with increasing doses of insecticide. An LD50 of cyfluthrin decreased male longevity by 52%, whereas an LD50 of hydramethylnon reduced male longevity by 81%. Longevity of females increased linearly with increasing sublethal doses of chlorpyrifos, whereas all doses of both cyfluthrin and hydramethylnon decreased longevity of females. Fecundity increased linearly with increasing sublethal doses of chlorpyrifos. Number of oothecae formed, oothecae hatched, and number of offspring produced in each ootheca increased with increasing sublethal concentrations of chlorpyrifos. In contrast, fecundity declined with increasing sublethal concentrations of cyfluthrin and hydramethylnon. Formation of the first ootheca occurred approximately 8 d after mating for untreated females but generally longer with sublethal concentrations of all insecticides. The period between oothecae hatch and the formation of subsequent oothecae increased with successive oothecae in all treatments.  相似文献

Abstract  The selective toxicity of six kinds of insecticides, including imidacloprid, imidacloprid + synergist (SV1), fenvalerate, endosulfan, methomyl and dimethoate, between the green peach aphid ( Myzus persicae Sulzer) and two species of ladybirds ( Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus and Propylaea japonica Thunbery), was investigated in the laboratory. The reults showed that both imidacloprid WP and imidacloprid + synergist (SVl) EC possessed the highest toxicity to the aphids. Between C. septempunctata and M. persicae and between P. japonica and M. persicae , the selective toxicity ratios (STRs) of imidacloprid WP, imidacloprid+ synergist (SV1) EC and endosulfan EC were 37.6 and 13.0, 9.84 and 7.75, 54.0 and 7.28 respectively. All of them showed rather high selective toxicity. The STRs of fenvalerate EC, dimethoate EC and methomyl EC were all very low, ranging from 0.02 to 0.21, indicating their low degree of safety to the two species of ladybids. The results demomarated that imidacloprid WP and imidacloprid + SVl EC not only had rather high toxicity to the aphids, but also reduced strikingly the reproduction rate and fecundity of the survival aphids. Insecticides can induce the relative fitness of insects decrease. Among the six insecticides tested with M. persicae , the following were insecticides and the order of induction was: imidacloprid + SV1 imidacloprid endosulfan methomyl fenvalerate > dimethoate.  相似文献

Four types of laboratory populations of the bean weevil (Acanthoscelides obtectus) have been developed to study the effects of density-dependent and age-specific selection. These populations have been selected at high (K) and low larval densities (r) as well as for reproduction early (Y) and late (O) in life. The results presented here suggest that the r- and K-populations (density-dependent selection regimes) have differentiated from each other with respect to the following life-history traits: egg-to-adult viability at high larval density (K > r), preadult developmental time (r > K), body weight (r > K), late fecundity (K > r), total realized fecundity (r > K), and longevity of males (r > K). It was also found that the following traits responded in statistically significant manner in populations subjected to different age-specific selection regimes: egg-to-adult viability (O > Y), body weight (O > Y), early fecundity (Y > O), late fecundity (O > Y), and longevity of females and males (O > Y). Although several life-history traits (viability, body weight, late fecundity) responded in similar manner to both density-dependent and age-specific selection regimes, it appears that underlying genetic and physiological mechanisms responsible for differentiation of the r/K and Y/O populations are different. We have also tested quantitative genetic basis of the bean weevil life-history traits in the populations experiencing density-dependent and age-specific selection. Among the traits traded-off within age-specific selection regimes, only early fecundity showed directional dominance, whereas late fecundity and longevity data indicated additive inheritance. In contrast to age-specific selecton regimes, three life-history traits (developmental time, body size, total fecundity) in the density-sependent regimes exhibited significant dominance effects. Lastly, we have tested the congruence between short-term and long-term effects of larval densities. The comparisons of the outcomes of the r/K selection regimes and those obtained from the low- and high-larval densities revealed that there is no congruence between the selection results and phenotypic plasticity for the analyzed life-history traits in the bean weevil.  相似文献

在室内分别测定了吡虫啉,吡虫啉+增效剂,氰戊菊酯,硫丹、乐果和灭多威6种杀虫剂对桃蚜Myzus persicae Sulzer,七星瓢虫Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus和龟纹瓢虫Propylea japonica(Thunbery)的毒力,比较了药剂在桃蚜和两种瓢虫之间的选择毒力比值(STR),以及药剂之间选择性差异,研究了桃蚜对不同药剂相对适合度,结果表明:吡虫啉+增效剂(SVI)和吡虫啉对桃蚜的毒力均很高,LC50分别是4628mg/L和0.9535mg/L,吡虫啉在七星瓢虫和桃蚜之间,龟纹瓢虫和桃蚜之间的STR值分别是37.6和13.0,吡虫啉+增效剂的STR分别是9.84和7.75,硫丹的SR分别是54.0和7.28,都表现出显的毒力选择性,而氰戊菊酯,乐果和灭多威的STR值均很小(0.02-0.21),不仅对桃蚜毒力低,而且对两种瓢虫也不安全,用吡虫啉和吡虫啉+SV1的LC50浓度处理桃蚜,其存活个体的产仔率和单雌产仔量明显减少,与其它药剂处理相比,显降低了桃蚜的相对适合度,六种杀虫剂处理的桃蚜种群,其相对适合度大小排列为:乐果EC(0.92)>氰戊菊酯EC(0.67)>灭多威EC(0.66)>硫丹EC(0.51)>吡虫啉WP(0.40)>吡虫啉+增效剂(SV1)EC(0.18),由此证明,吡虫啉不仅对桃蚜毒力高,对天敌瓢虫杀伤力小,而且对桃蚜种群有持续控制作用。  相似文献

【目的】西花蓟马Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande)是重要的入侵害虫,是番茄斑萎病毒(TSWV)最有效的传播媒介,TSWV对西花蓟马的生长发育有一定的影响。多杀菌素是防治西花蓟马最有效的药剂之一,但已有田间西花蓟马对多杀菌素产生抗药性的报道。TSWV对抗性西花蓟马是否也有影响及程度如何尚不清楚。本研究通过对此问题进行深入研究,以期为进一步了解TSWV对西花蓟马的影响提供依据。【方法】应用特定年龄-龄期及两性生命表的方法,研究用番茄斑萎病毒处理和未处理的多杀菌素抗性和敏感西花蓟马种群的生物学特性;用叶管药膜法测定不同处理种群对3种药剂(多杀菌素、甲氨基阿维菌素苯甲酸盐和虫螨腈)的敏感性变化。【结果】对于抗性品系,TSWV处理后西花蓟马的发育历期缩短,雌成虫寿命和产卵量略高,但与对照组差异不显著(P>0.05),内禀增长率(r)和净生殖率(R0)分别为0.0433 d-1和2.210,显著高于对照组(分别为0.0356 d-1和1.972)(P ≤ 0.001)。对于敏感品系,TSWV处理后西花蓟马的发育历期缩短,雌雄成虫寿命均显著延长(P ≤ 0.001),产卵量也略有提高,R0为4.125,显著高于对照组(3.979)(P ≤ 0.001)。TSWV处理后敏感和抗性西花蓟马对多杀菌素的敏感性没有发生明显变化,对甲氨基阿维菌素苯甲酸盐和虫螨腈的敏感性显著降低。【结论】番茄斑萎病毒对多杀菌素敏感和抗性西花蓟马均有直接有利影响,病毒处理的西花蓟马发育历期缩短,繁殖能力增强,成虫寿命延长,对药剂的敏感性降低。  相似文献

The acute toxicity of 10 conventional insecticides to adult of Trichogramma chilonis Ishii (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) was bioassayed by membrane method, and then their sublethal effects on the parasitoid were evaluated in the laboratory. Based on sublethal concentration (LC30) values at 8 h after treatment, we determined that adult T. chilonis were the most susceptible to chlorfenapyr, followed by fipronil, spinosad, avermectins, beta-cypermethrin, and cartap, with lethal concentration (LC)30 values of 0.3133, 0.3269, 1.5408, 3.2961, 6.1469, and 9.021 mg/liter, respectively. The field-recommended concentrations of chlorfluazuron, indoxacarb, Bacillus thuringiensis, and tebufenozide caused <30% mortality of treated adults; therefore, they were used to evaluate sublethal effects on the parasitoid. After treatment with sublethal concentration of fipronil and avermectins, the longevity of treated females (1.2 and 1.6 d) was significantly shortened and fecundity (34.7 and 1.6) was remarkably decreased; consequently, the life-table parameters (R0, r(m), lambda, and T) of T. chilonis were statistically lower than those in the control. Cartap and spinosad also reduced longevity (8 and 7.9 d) and fecundity (110.77 and 117.2) of treated adults, but cartap enhanced the female percentage of F1 offspring (61.6%), resulting a statistical higher R0, r(m), and lambda of treated T. chilonis. In contrast, chlorfluazuron and tebufenozide increased longevity (16.4 and 15.4 d) and fecundity (248 and 256.9) of treated adults but slightly decreased the female percentage of F1 offspring (31.4 and 38.1%). Although chlorfenapyr showed no adverse influence on longevity and fecundity, it remarkably reduced the female percentage of F1 offspring (13.5%), leading to a lower R0, r(m), and lambda of treated T. chilonis. Indoxacarb, B. thuringiensis, and beta-cypermethrin had no obvious sublethal effects on the longevity and fecundity of treated adults. Based on these results, we consider B. thuringienesis, chlorfluazuron, indoxacarb, beta-cypermethrin, and tebufenozide safe to T. chilonis, suggesting that these insecticides are compatible with this parasitoid when being used in the field. However, fipronil, chlorfenapyr, spinosad, and avermectins were very harmful to T. chilonis. Timing of application of these insecticides was critical.  相似文献

Antagonistic sexual coevolution stems from the notion that male and female interests over reproduction are in conflict. Such conflicts appear to be particularly obvious when male genital armature inflicts damage to the female reproductive tract resulting in reduced female longevity. However, studies of mating frequency, genital damage and female longevity are difficult to interpret because females not only sustain more genital damage, but also receive more seminal fluid when they engage in multiple copulations. Here, we attempt to disentangle the effects of genital damage and seminal fluid transfer on female longevity in the beetle Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). Males copulating for the sixth time in succession inflicted greater levels of genital damage, but transferred smaller ejaculates in comparison with virgin males. The number of copulations performed by males was negatively related to female fecundity and positively related to female longevity, suggesting a trade-off between fecundity and longevity. However, inclusion of fecundity as a covariate revealed sperm and/or seminal fluid transfer to have a negative impact on female longevity above that caused by the fecundity-longevity trade-off. The consequences of multiple copulations on female longevity were examined. Females that mated twice laid more eggs and died sooner than those that mated once. However, incorporation of fecundity as a covariate into our statistical model removed the effect of female mating frequency on female longevity, indicating that double-mated females suffer greater mortality owing to the trade-off between fecundity and longevity. Males of this species are known to transfer very large ejaculates (up to 8% of their body weight), which may represent a significant nutritional benefit to females. However, the receipt of large ejaculates appears to carry costs. Thus, the interpretation of multiple mating experiments on female longevity and associated functional explanations of polyandry in this species are likely to be complex.  相似文献

Darwin's fecundity advantage model is often cited as the cause of female biased size dimorphism, however, the empirical studies of lifetime selection on male and female body size that would be required to demonstrate this are few. As a component of a study relating sexual size dimorphism to lifetime selection in natural populations of the female size-biased waterstrider Aquarius remigis (Hemiptera: Gerridae), we estimated coefficients for daily fecundity selection, longevity selection, and lifetime fecundity selection acting on female body size and components of body size for two consecutive generations. Daily fecundity was estimated using females confined in field enclosures and reproductive survival was estimated by twice-weekly recaptures. We found that daily fecundity selection favored females with longer total length through direct selection acting on abdomen length. Longevity selection favored females with smaller total length. When daily fecundity and reproductive longevity were combined to estimate lifetime fecundity we found significant balancing selection acting on total length in both years. The relationship between daily fecundity and reproductive longevity also reveals a significant cost of reproduction in one of two years. We relate these selection estimates to previous estimates of sexual selection on male body size and consider the relationship between contemporary selection and sexual size dimorphism.  相似文献

The ability of two white-rot fungi (Trametes versicolor and Pleurotus ostreatus) and one brown-rot fungus (Gloeophyllum trabeum) to degrade two organochlorine insecticides, lindane and endosulfan, in liquid cultures was studied and dead fungal biomass was examined for adsorption of both insecticides from liquid medium. Lindane and endosulfan were also treated with fungal laccase and bacterial protein CotA, which has laccase activities. The amount of degraded lindane and endosulfan increased with their exposure period in the liquid cultures of both examined white-rot fungi. Endosulfan was transformed to endosulfan sulphate by T. versicolor and P. ostreatus. A small amount of endosulfan ether was also detected and its origin was examined. Degradation of lindane and endosulfan by a brown rot G. trabeum did not occur. Mycelial biomasses of all examined fungi have been found to adsorb lindane and endosulfan and adsorption onto fungal biomass should therefore be considered as a possible mechanism of pollutant removal when fungal degradation potentials are studied. Bacterial protein CotA performed more efficient degradation of lindane and endosulfan than fungal laccase and has shown potential for bioremediation of organic pollutants.  相似文献

In most organisms, fecundity and longevity are negatively associated and the molecular regulation of these two life-history traits is highly interconnected. In addition, nutrient intake often has opposing effects on lifespan and reproduction. In contrast to solitary insects, the main reproductive individual of social hymenopterans, the queen, is also the most long-lived. During development, queen larvae are well-nourished, but we are only beginning to understand the impact of nutrition on the queens'' adult life and the molecular regulation and connectivity of fecundity and longevity. Here, we used two experimental manipulations to alter queen fecundity in the ant Temnothorax rugatulus and investigated associated changes in fat body gene expression. Egg removal triggered a fecundity increase, leading to expression changes in genes with functions in fecundity such as oogenesis and body maintenance. Dietary restriction lowered the egg production of queens and altered the expression of genes linked to autophagy, Toll signalling, cellular homeostasis and immunity. Our study reveals that an experimental increase in fecundity causes the co-activation of reproduction and body maintenance mechanisms, shedding light on the molecular regulation of the link between longevity and fecundity in social insects.  相似文献

Inorganic insecticides are commonly used in urban pest management because of their low mammalian toxicity. We tested the effects of sodium tetraborate (ST) on life parameters of greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), to determine its sublethal toxicity on the insect. Survival, development, adult longevity, and fecundity of the wax moth were investigated by rearing larvae on artificial diets containing ST at concentrations of 0.005, 0.1, 0.2, or 0.3%. Larvae reared on medium at the highest concentration of ST (0.3%) had significantly decreased survival to the seventh instar and prolonged time required to reach the seventh instar. This concentration reduced pupa and adult yields to 12.5%, and it also prolonged development by 5 d. ST did not significantly influence adult longevity. Dietary ST led to significant decreases in fecundity and egg viability. Oviposition of survivors at the highest ST concentration (0.3%) was completely inhibited. Lysozyme content was decreased in larval hemolymph and fat body at high dietary ST concentrations. Fat body lysozyme content was significantly increased two-fold for larvae reared on diet at the lowest concentration of ST (0.005%). However, the highest concentration (0.3%) dramatically decreased fat body lysozyme content from 0.12 +/- 0.013 to 0.006 +/- 0.003 mg/ml in seventh instars. We infer that sublethal levels of dietary ST substantially influence life history parameters and immunocompetence in G. mellonella.  相似文献

In this article we investigate the direct and correlated responses to selection for developmental time in order to discern differences between lines in several preadult and adult life history traits of Acanthoscelides obtectus (Coleoptera, Bruchidae). Selection for fast development was about five times as effective as selection for slow development, as judged by realized heritabilities. The correlated responses on the following life‐history traits were studied: egg size, hatching success, embryonic developmental time, egg‐to‐adult viability, body weight, first day of egg laying, total fecundity, and longevity. Analyses of the terminal generation of selection showed that all life history traits examined, except for hatching success, were affected by selection. The findings suggest that body weight, total fecundity, and longevity traded off to preadult developmental time. Unlike the adult traits, none of the preadult traits showed negative correlations with developmental time. We also present data concerning the underlying genetic basis that produces changes in preadult developmental time, body weight, and egg‐to‐adult viability in the lines selected for fast and slow preadult developmental time. Additive‐dominance genetic architecture for both preadult developmental time and body weight was found. In addition, it appears that the responses to selection for preadult developmental time involved between 10 and 28 loci, which were correlated with at least one to four genes for body weight. Epistasis makes a significant contribution to genetic divergence between fast and slow selected lines only with respect to preadult viability. The observed levels of dominance and epistasis underscore the important role of nonadditive genetic effects to the adaptive diversifications of bean weevil populations.  相似文献

Abstract:  The haemogram of Rhynocoris kumarii Ambrose and Livingstone comprises prohaemocytes, plasmatocytes, granular haemocytes, cystocytes and oenocytoids. The impact of five insecticides, viz. monocrotophos, dimethoate, methylparathion, quinalphos and endosulfan on the total haemocyte count (THC) and differential haemocyte counts (DHC) was studied. All of the insecticides except endosulfan initially reduced both prohaemocytes and plasmatocytes, increased the granular haemocytes, altered the percentage of cystocytes and oenocytoids and increased the total haemocyte count (THC). On the contrary, endosulfan initially increased the prohaemocytes and plasmatocytes, decreased the granular haemocytes and also the THC. The highest impact on the DHC and THC was caused by methylparathion and monocrotophos and the least impact by endosulfan. Hence, endosulfan is considered as the safest insecticide followed by dimethoate and quinalphos among these five insecticides to use with R. kumarii .  相似文献

Virgin females of Lobesia botrana Denis & Schiffermüller were mated at ages of 1, 3, 5, 8, 12 and 16 days and the effect of mating delay on reproductive output assessed. Delayed mating did not affect female mating success but fertilization was reduced in 16-day-old females. Increased mating delays substantially affected daily oviposition pattern and resulted in a significant reduction of both fecundity and fertility, so that mean number of viable eggs laid decreased from 150 to 22 in 1- and 16-day-old mated females, respectively. Heavier females were more constrained than lighter ones by mating delays and female reproductive efficiency (no. viable eggs/female body weight) was also significantly reduced. Female longevity significantly increased and oviposition period gradually declined with mating delay. The number of viable eggs was positively correlated with both female weight and oviposition period; female longevity and female weight were also significantly correlated. However, the significance of these correlations declined with increased mating delay. Results overall indicated that mating delay drastically reduces female L. botrana reproductive output. The implications of delayed mating of females are discussed from an ecological perspective in relation to L. botrana control using mating disruption.  相似文献

双斑长跗萤叶甲Monolepta hieroglyphica(Motschulsky)已成为新疆北疆棉区的一重大新害虫,在室内5个恒温下(19、22、25、28和31℃)研究了温度对双斑长跗萤叶甲成虫寿命及生殖力的影响。结果表明,在19、22、25、28和31℃下雌雄成虫平均寿命分别为64.1、60.8、55.6、42.1和34.7d,雌虫平均寿命明显长于雄虫;温度对雌成虫产卵前期、产卵期及产卵量有影响,在前述19~31℃5个温度下,其平均产卵量分别为29.2、82.1、93.8、73.4和63.1粒/雌。  相似文献

Adult males of Megarcyssignata (Plecoptera: Perlodidae) are significantly smaller than females and emerge before females (protandry) from two western Colorado streams. During summer 1992 stoneflies from a trout stream emerged earlier in the season and at larger sizes than those from a colder fishless stream, and size at metamorphosis did not change over the emergence period in either stream. We performed two experiments to determine whether variation in size at metamorphosis affected the fecundity, reproductive success and longevity of individuals of this stonefly species and if total lifetime fecundity was affected by the number of matings. In the first experiment, total lifetime fecundity (eggs oviposited) was determined for adult females held in small plastic cages in the field. Males were removed after one copulation, or pairs were left together for life and allowed to multiply mate. Most copulations occurred in the first few days of the experiment. Females in treatments allowing multiple matings had significantly lower total lifetime fecundity and shorter adult longevity than females that only mated once. Multiple matings also reduced longevity of males. Fecundity increased significantly with female body mass at emergence, but only for females that mated once. While multiple matings eliminated the fecundity advantage of large female body size, number of matings did not affect the significant positive relationship between body mass at metamorphosis and longevity of males or females. In a second experiment designed to determine if body mass at emergence affected male mating success, we placed one large and one small male Megarcys in an observation arena containing one female and recorded which male obtained the first mating. The large and the small male had equal probabilities of copulating with the female. Copulations usually lasted all night, and the unmated male made frequent, but unsuccessful attempts to take over the copulating female. Our data suggest that selection pressures determining body size at metamorphosis may operate independently on males and females, resulting in evolution of sexual size dimorphism, protandry, and mating early in the adult stage. We emphasize the importance of interpreting the fitness consequences of larval growth and development on the timing of and size at metamorphosis in the context of the complete life cycle.
