OBJECTIVE--To monitor nutritional status and food security in order to identify nutritionally vulnerable groups. DESIGN--Members of five different household groups (urban and rural residents, displaced people in collective centres and private accommodation, elderly people living without younger family) and all residents of two old people''s homes were prospectively followed. Households were selected from 20 local communities and nine collective centres. SETTING--Monitoring carried out in three besieged areas of Bosnia-Hercegovina (Sarajevo, Tuzla, and Zenica). SUBJECTS--1739 individuals sampled. INTERVENTIONS--Data collected every month from December 1993 to May 1994. Information on household food security was collected through structured questionnaires. All subjects were weighed and their heights measured. Weight for age Z scores were calculated for children; body mass index was calculated for adults and elderly people. RESULTS--From December 1993 to February 1994, before a temporary cease fire, access to food was reduced. In February 1994 no significant signs of undernutrition were detected among children or adults, but elderly people had higher than expected levels of undernutrition (15.5% with body mass index < 18.5), a higher rate of weight loss than adults (1.2 kg over two months), and a higher prevalence of self reported illness. CONCLUSIONS--Elderly people in Bosnia-Hercegovina are at greater risk of undernutrition than other age groups. Undernutrition may be precipitated in elderly people by sickness, cold, stress, and problems related to food preparation. The health and welfare of elderly people during the emergency in Bosnia-Hercegovina require special attention, and integrated age care programmes are needed.  相似文献

To fully understand how plastic is affecting the ocean, we need to understand how marine life interacts directly with it. Besides their ecological relevance, microbes can affect the distribution, degradation and transfer of plastics to the rest of the marine food web. From amplicon sequencing and scanning electron microscopy, we know that a diverse array of microorganisms rapidly associate with plastic marine debris in the form of biofouling and biofilms, also known as the “Plastisphere.” However, observation of multiple microbial interactions in situ, at small spatial scales in the Plastisphere, has been a challenge. In this issue of Molecular Ecology Resources, Schlundt et al. apply the combination labelling and spectral imaging – fluorescence in situ hybridization to study microbial communities on plastic marine debris. The images demonstrate the colocalization of abundant bacterial groups on plastic marine debris at a relatively high taxonomic and spatial resolution while also visualizing biofouling of eukaryotes, such as diatoms and bryozoans. This modern imaging technology provides new possibilities to address questions regarding the ecology of marine microbes on plastic marine debris and describe more specific impacts of plastic pollution in the marine food webs.  相似文献

Many territorial species respond less aggressively to familiar neighbours than to unfamiliar floating strangers based on individual differences in acoustic signals. This form of social recognition, termed neighbour–stranger discrimination (NSD) or dear-enemy phenomenon has been reported so far from three anuran species. To investigate the potential of auditory signal features to convey information on sender's identity, we determined patterns of within-male and between-male variability in the advertisement call of the aromobatid frog Allobates femoralis . We examined 285 calls from 19 males to assess those call properties showing sufficient and reliable inter-individual differences to function as possible recognition cues. Beside calls per call bout and call rate, all other examined call properties were more variable among males than within males. Generally, temporal call features showed higher between- and within-male variability ratios than spectral properties and contributed mostly to distinguish individual males in the discriminant-function analysis. Mean classification success of 64.9% correctly assigned calls to individual males is mainly attributable to three temporal call properties (duration of note 1 and 4, note repetition rate). Altogether, our results suggest that there is sufficient variation in the advertisement call to discriminate statistically among individual males. However, assessed call differences between A. femoralis males were rather small, suggesting that potential NSD might be based either on a combination of call features or even on the whole pattern of individual call variation instead on single call properties. Habituation–discrimination experiments in the field using modified playback signals to test for differential behavioural responses are required to confirm this hypothesis.  相似文献

Tuberculosis (TB), an illness that mainly affects the respiratory system, is one of the world's most pernicious diseases. TB currently infects one-third of the world's population and kills approximately 1.7 million people each year. Most infected individuals fail to progress to full-blown disease because the TB bacilli are 'walled off' by the immune system inside a tissue nodule known as a granuloma. The granuloma's primary function is one of containment and it prevents the dissemination of the mycobacteria. But what is the role of the TB bacillus in the progression of the granuloma? This Review explores how Mycobacterium tuberculosis influences granuloma formation and maintenance, and ensures the spread of the disease.  相似文献

The discovery that arrestins can function as ligand-regulated signaling scaffolds has revealed a previously unappreciated level of complexity in G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signal transduction. Because arrestin-bound GPCRs are uncoupled from G proteins, arrestin binding can be viewed as switching receptors between two temporally and spatially distinct signaling modes. Recent work has established two factors that underscore this duality of GPCR signaling and suggest it may ultimately have therapeutic significance. The first is that signaling by receptor-arrestin "signalsomes" does not require heterotrimeric G protein activation. The second is that arrestin-dependent signals can be initiated by pathway-specific "biased agonists," creating the potential for drugs that selectively modulate different aspects of GPCR function. Currently, however, little is known about the physiological relevance of G protein-independent signals at the cellular or whole animal levels, and additional work is needed to determine whether arrestin pathway-selective drugs will find clinical application.  相似文献

Acanthamoeba hosts diverse microbial organisms including viruses, bacteria, yeast and protists, some of which are potential human pathogens. The precise nature of this symbiosis is not clear, but it is suggested that such interactions enable pathogenic microbes to survive hostile conditions and lead to their transmission to susceptible hosts to establish infection. In particular, Acanthamoeba-bacteria interactions have gained significant attention by the scientific and the medical community and have led to speculations of employing anti-amoebic approaches in eradicating 'superbugs' from clinical settings. Here, we discuss the nature of these convoluted interactions and the benefit they represent for the symbionts.  相似文献

Marine biology and biological oceanography are two disciplinary subfields that have long struggled with their definitions. Should marine biology simply be considered a part of biology that takes place in the marine environment or is it a distinct entity, with conceptual problems and methodological approaches all its own? Similarly, biological oceanography could be seen as a necessary adjunct to physical and chemical oceanography or it could be defined more as an extension of biology into the marine realm. In the United States, these issues were directly addressed from the mid 1950s through the mid 1960s in a series of events that shed light on how marine biologists came to a working definition of their field that provided a broad methodological tent for practitioners and, at the same time, allied the field to oceanography during a period in which exploration of uncharted areas drew considerable funding from the post-WWII federal agencies charged with keeping American science at the forefront.  相似文献

At the same time, the diseases they cause remain as prevalent as ever, but appear increasingly irrelevant in their wider medical, social, economic and political context. Intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) and Intraepithelial apoptotic granules (AGs) are found in the vast majority of colorectal adenomas, less frequently in incipient carcinomas and occasionally in advanced colorectal carcinomas. In colorectal adenomas, the activated and cytotoxic IELs undergo apoptosis by a Fas-FasL mechanism. In advanced invasive carcinomas lacking IELs, that mechanism cannot be activated. On the other hand, the peritumoural lymphocytes which surround some advanced invasive carcinomas may abrogate to-be-metastatic tumor cells, as treated cancer patients with peritumoural lymphocytes have a better 5-years' survival than those without that peritumoural barrier. In colorectal adenomas the host reaction (IELs) dysplastic cells Fas-dependent confrontation seems to prevent rapidly proliferating adenomas from becoming rapidly invasive carcinomas, since that process takes 10 to 20 years to evolve. The 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) of a 79-year-old male patient with recurrent pre-syncope showed irregular sinus rhythm with constant PR interval and left bundle branch block (LBBB) with intermittently blocked P waves. The beat following the blocked P wave had a narrower QRS with a shorter PR interval. The phenomenon of bilateral bundle branch block explains the sudden improvement in the atrioventricular conduction.  相似文献

Macroscopic chiral objects (boats and planes with turned rudders, shoes, etc.) get separated from their mirror‐image counterparts by motion in achiral media. However, chiral molecules are not enantio‐differentiated without the presence of a chiral environment, which may be due to other chiral molecules in the medium. This article explores the reasons of this micro/macro difference as well as the size borderline between the two regimes. There are two major demarcation lines, both related to the object's chaotic thermal motion. The first one is due to destruction of the necessary spatial orientation by the fast rotational diffusion. Only particles larger than 1 μm can maintain their original orientation for 1 sec or longer. For smaller particles, an additional external orienting factor, e.g., a strong electric field has to be applied. The second limitation is defined by the ratio of the hydrodynamic separation of the enantiomers (which is directly proportional to time) to their displacement due to the translational Brownian motion (which is proportional to square root of time). On the laboratory time scales (up to a year), the chiral objects have to be larger than 0.25 μm to be resolved. On evolutionary time scales, much smaller object could be resolved.
