Prout, Bungaard and Bryant (1973, Theor. Popul. Biol. 4, 446–465) presented the first formal treatment of a model of meiotic drive involving a modifier locus which controls the intensity of drive. They studied the equilibrium behavior in the simplest model where it is assumed that drive is maximal when not suppressed. In that case there is one polymorphic equilibrium at which there is linkage disequilibrium. The equilibrium solutions in the general model of meiotic drive proposed by Prout, et al. are given in this paper together with a stability analysis. It is shown that up to three polymorphic equilibria may exist, two of which are in linkage disequilibrium and one in linkage equilibrium. These equilibria exhibit behavior qualitatively opposite to what is widely accepted as the usual for two locus systems and which is not seem in the simple case originally treated. The polymorphic equilibria with linkage disequilibrium may be stable for loose linkage and not for tight while that with linkage equilibrium is stable in an interval of relatively tight linkage values. 相似文献

A model for the evolution of the sex-ratio meiotic drive system in Drosophila is proposed and analyzed. The model incorporates genetic modification of meiotic drive and altered fertility in the carriers of the modified sex-ratio chromosomes. The condition that a sex-ratio modifying chromosome increase is that the relative change in the sex-ratio distortion overcome any relative fertility loss in carriers of the modifying chromosome. When no fertility differences are involved, the model predicts that any increase in distortion of the sex ratio will be favored. 相似文献

The conditions are found under which the frequency of a new gene altering the recombination fraction between two loci controlling meiotic drive will increase. When the model mimics the recombination reducing effects of a chromosomal rearrangement, such as an inversion or duplication, then the result is that the frequency of the chromosomal rearrangement in the population will increase. This may help explain the presence of inversions and duplications (or insertions) in the segregation-distorter system in Drosophila. In some cases it is found that if the new gene causes any alteration in the recombination fraction between the two loci, the frequency of the gene will increase. 相似文献

A model is proposed to analyze the behavior of autosomal suppressor modifiers of “Sex-Ratio” meiotic drive in drosophila. These modifiers, if neutral in fitness, are expected to increase because they tend to be associated with the rare sex (males). However, selection operating on the sex-linked drive locus will sometimes act against autosomal modifiers as well because the two loci are always in gametic phase disequilibrium. Conditions under which modifiers will not increase are presented in terms of the relative fitness of the sex-linked drive locus. To prevent the increase of modifiers, the fitness of Sex-Ratio males relative to Standard males has to be no greater than 0.3 and there has to be overdominance in females. This model integrates findings from the search for modifiers and results from the measurement of fitness. 相似文献

A sex-ratio distortion factor was found at high frequency in D. simulans strains from Seychelles and New Caledonia. This factor is poorly or not expressed within those strains which are resistant to it. Its presence was detected by crossing females from New Caledonia or the Seychelles with males from a different geographic origin. Most of the F1 males obtained produced an excess of females (up to 99%) in their progeny. The two strains are infected with Wolbachia, but these micro-organisms are not involved in the sex-ratio distortion. The sex-ratio factor is shown to be an X-linked meiotic driver; nuclear resistance factor(s) act by suppressing the drive. It is likely that the same X-located driver invaded the two populations, which subsequently developed resistance factor(s) against it. 相似文献

The ABO and Rh systems of the population in 26 residential units in the province of Ferrara were studied to detect the effect of genetic drift on the differentiation of gene frequencies. Results obtained from principal components analysis and dendrograms were similar. A significant correlation between genetic and geographic distance was found. It was therefore hypothesized that in the area of Ferrara children born to parents originating from different communes were heterozygous at more loci than children born to parents originating from the same commune. It was also thought that it may be possible to use geographic distance between birthplaces of parents as an indicator of hybridity in their children. 相似文献

In order to estimate the genetically effective troop size of Japanese monkeys, we have to know the pattern of distribution of the numbers of gametes contributed by the individual members of the parental population to the next generation. The author inspected the observation records of macaque troops made by a number of socio-ecologists and found that the relationship between sexual rank and sexual activity of adult males could be approximately expressed by the law of geometrical series. Methods for estimating the genetic component of phenotypic plasticity are presented. In the general case of clonal replicates or full-sibs raised in several environments, the heritability of plasticity can be measured as the ratio of the genotype-environment interaction variance to the total phenotypic variance. In the special case of only two environments plasticity also can be measured as the difference among environments in genotype or family means. In that case, the heritability of plasticity can be measured as either a ratio of variance components or as the slope of a parent-offspring regression. The general measure suffers because no least-square standard errors have been developed, although they can be calculated by maximum-likelihood or bootstrapping techniques. For the other two methods least-square standard errors can be calculated but require very large experiments for statistical significance to be achieved. The heritability measures are compared using data on plasticity of thorax size in response to temperature in Drosophila melanogaster. The heritability estimates are all in close agreement. Models of the evolution of phenotypic plasticity have treated it as a trait in its own right and as a cross-environment genetic correlation. Population genetics of speciation in nonmodel organisms: I. Ancestral polymorphism in mangroves 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The level of DNA polymorphism in the ancestral species at the time of speciation can be estimated using DNA sequences from many loci sampled from 2 or more extant species. The comparison between ancestral and extant polymorphism can be informative about the population genetics of speciation. In this study, we collected and analyzed DNA sequences of approximately 60 genes from 4 species of Sonneratia, a common genus of mangroves on the Indo-Pacific coasts. We found that the 3 ancestral species were comparable to each other in terms of level of polymorphism. However, the ancestral species at the time of speciation were substantially more polymorphic than the extant geographical populations. This ancestral polymorphism is in fact larger than, or at least equal to, the level of polymorphism of the entire species across extant geographical populations. The observations are not fully compatible with speciation by strict allopatry. We suggest that, at the time of speciation, the ancestral species consisted of interconnected but strongly divided geographical populations. This population structure would give rise to high level of polymorphism across species range. This approach of studying the speciation history by genomic means should be applicable to nonmodel organisms. 相似文献

Guanyl nucleotide binding-proteins, or G-proteins, are ubiquitous molecules that are involved in cellular signal transduction mechanisms. Because a role has been established for cAMP in meiosis and G-proteins participate in cAMP-generating systems by stimulating or inhibiting adenylate cyclase, the present study was conducted to examine the possible involvement of G-proteins in the resumption of meiotic maturation. Cumulus cell-free mouse oocytes (denuded oocytes) were maintained in meiotic arrest in a transient and dose-dependent manner when microinjected with the nonhydrolyzable GTP analog, GTP gamma S. This effect was specific for GTP gamma S, because GppNHp, GTP, and ATP gamma S were without effect. Three compounds, known to interact with G-proteins, were tested for their ability to modulate meiotic maturation: pertussis toxin, cholera toxin, and aluminum fluoride (AlF4-). Pertussis toxin had little effect on maturation in either cumulus cell-enclosed oocytes or denuded oocytes when meiotic arrest was maintained with dibutyryl cAMP (dbcAMP) or hypoxanthine. Cholera toxin stimulated germinal vesicle breakdown (GVB) in cumulus cell-enclosed oocytes during long-term culture, but its action was inhibitory in denuded oocytes. AlF4- stimulated GVB in both cumulus cell-enclosed oocytes and denuded oocytes when meiotic arrest was maintained with hypoxanthine but was much less effective in dbcAMP-arrested oocytes. In addition, AlF4- abrogated the inhibitory action of cholera toxin in denuded oocytes and also that of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in cumulus cell-enclosed oocytes. Cholera toxin or FSH alone each stimulated the synthesis of cAMP in oocyte-cumulus cell complexes, whereas pertussis toxin or AlF4- alone were without effect. Both cholera toxin and AlF4- augmented the stimulatory action of FSH on cAMP. These data suggest the involvement of guanyl nucleotides and G-proteins in the regulation of GVB, although different G-proteins and mediators may be involved at the oocyte and cumulus cell levels. Cholera toxin most likely acts by ADP ribosylation of the alpha subunit of Gs and increased generation of cAMP, whereas AlF4- appears to act by antagonizing a cAMP-dependent step. 相似文献

Dioon edule Lindl. (Zamiaceae) is a cycad endemic to Mexico, that occurs as one species D. edule and the geographical variety D. edule var. angustifolium (Miq.) Miq. Dioon edule has a north to south distribution in eastern Mexico. In this study, we analysed 14 allozymic loci in eight populations of D. edule from its total distribution range by sampling all known populations. Patterns of diversity and genetic variability, within and among populations, were obtained. The mean number of alleles per locus ( A ) was 1.44 and the percentage of polymorphic loci was relatively high ( P = 54.78). The mean observed ( H O ) and expected heterozygosity ( H E ) were 0.27 and 0.24, respectively. F -statistics revealed an excess of heterozygous genotypes, locally and globally ( F = −0.17 and f = −0.27, respectively). The genetic variation explained by differences among populations was only 7.5%. We also detected a negative relationship between genetic diversity and latitude. On average, the gene flow between population pairs was relatively high ( Nm = 2.98); furthermore, gene flow between population pairs was significantly correlated with geographical distances ( r = −0.38, P = 0.025). Therefore, patterns of genetic diversity in D. edule appear to be associated with the post-Pleistocene spread of the species, from its southerly (origin) to its northerly range (derived populations, including its central distribution). The biogeographical and evolutionary aspects of the results of this study are discussed. THE SOP MODEL [INFORMATION PROCESSING IN ANIMALS: Memory Mechanisms, Erlbaum, Hillsdale, NJ, 1981, p. 5] is described in terms of its assumed stimulus representation, network characteristics, and rules for learning and performance. It is shown how several Pavlovian conditioning phenomena can be accounted on the basis of the model's presumed stimulus representation. Challenges to the SOP model prompted the adoption of a componential stimulus representation in: AESOP [Contemporary Learning Theories: Pavlovian Conditioning and the Status of Traditional Learning Theory, Erlbaum, Hillsdale, NJ, 1989, p. 149], this was a dual representation of the unconditioned stimulus (US), and C-SOP [Contemporary Learning: Theory and Application, Erlbaum, Mahwah, NJ, 2001, p. 23], this was a multi-component representation of the conditioned stimulus (CS). The assumption of a componential CS representation, where large numbers of elements can be separately learned about, necessitated a modification of the learning rule. The modified, "constrained" rule was found useful to explain timing characteristics of Pavlovian conditioned responses, as well as data offered by Rescorla [J. Exp. Psychol. Anim. Behav. Process. 26 (2000) 428; Q. J. Exp. Psychol. 54B (2001) 53; J. Exp. Psychol. Anim. Behav. Process. 28 (2002) 163] showing that stimuli trained in compound do not share the same quantitative fate. 相似文献
