Social factors are known to affect the reproduction of many canids both in the wild and in farms. For example, reproduction in farmed silver foxes is regulated by social stress; foxes seem to benefit from noncramped housing conditions and permanent breeding cages. However, no comparable studies have been carried out in farmed blue foxes.

The aim of our experiment was to create an alternative, improved, economically viable and practical housing solution for blue foxes. Therefore, we compared reproductive performance of blue foxes in permanent breeding cages with low animal densities (L group, N = 79) and traditional housing with its changing social environment with high animal density (H group, N = 74). The reproductive data from the L and H groups were compared separately for primiparous and multiparous vixens because the reproductive performance in primiparous vixens was substantially lower (P < 0.001) than in multiparous vixens.

Altogether, 41 and 39% of the primiparous vixens in the H and L group whelped (P > 0.05), but only 28 and 34%, respectively, weaned at least one cub (P > 0.05), i.e., 72 and 66% of the primiparous vixens did not reproduce in the H and L group, respectively (P > 0.05). The total reproductive performance, expressed as cubs at weaning per breeding female, was 1.7 ± 3.5 for the H and 1.6 ± 2.9 for the L group (P > 0.05). In the primiparous vixens, the only statistically significant difference observed between the two housing systems was that the onset of oestrus occurred five days earlier in the H than in the L group (P < 0.05).

All multiparous vixens in the L group exhibited oestrus compared to 94% in the H group (P > 0.05). Furthermore, there was a nonsignificant (ns) trend for fewer barren females (9% versus 17%), more successfully reproducing vixens (83% versus 74%) and a higher number of live-born cubs (10.9 ± 4.7 versus 9.4 ± 3.9) in the L than in H group in the multiparous vixens (for all P > 0.05). This resulted in 1.7 and 1.4 cubs more per breeding and per mated vixen, respectively, at weaning in the L group (7.3 ± 5.0) compared to the H group (5.6 ± 4.2), but also this difference was nonsignificant.

Although our present results lack statistical significance, they are promising enough to encourage field experiments with sufficiently large number of animals to prove or disprove these preliminary findings that lower housing density and permanent breeding cage, together or separately, may enhance reproduction particularly in multiparous blue fox vixens.  相似文献

Our aim was to compare traditional breeding system, i.e. artificial insemination with singly-housing, to alternative breeding systems in farmed blue fox (Alopex lagopus or Vulpes lagopus) vixens. At the age of 7 weeks (i.e. at weaning), 48 randomly selected female blue fox cubs were divided into four experimental groups: (1) artificially inseminated singly-housed vixens in cages (AI-SC), (2) artificially inseminated pair-housed vixens in double-cages (AI-PC), (3) naturally bred pair-housed vixens with a male in triple-cages (NB-PC), and (4) naturally bred pair-housed vixens with a male in outdoor enclosures (NB-PE). The cubs were counted on days 1, 2, 3, 7, 14 and 49 postpartum and the reproductive performance per breeding (RPB) and per mated vixens (RPM) with its subcomponents were formed from these data. RPB was zero in both NB groups. In AI-PC and AI-SC, RPB was 1.3+/-2.5 and 4.1+/-4.7 cubs, respectively. RPB and the percentage of vixens that weaned cubs were lower in NB-PC and NB-PE than in AI-PC. In AI groups, both RPB and RPM at weaning tended to be better in singly-housed than in pair-housed blue fox vixens. No statistically significant differences were found between AI groups in the percentage of vixens without oestrus, barren vixens, vixens that lost all cubs or weaned at least one cub. Only in one pair (AI-PC) both vixens displayed communal breeding and weaned cubs. The present results show that vixens in traditional breeding system had better RPM than in any of the studied pair-housing systems. The current blue fox population has been effectively selected for cage-breeding and artificial reproduction, and therefore blue foxes generally reproduce well with artificial insemination after careful detection of oestrus in traditional breeding conditions.  相似文献

We studied the effects of primiparity on litter size, offspring size, and cub loss in brown bears (Ursus arctos) in two study areas (north, south) in Sweden from 1987 to 2006. Sexually selected infanticide (SSI) has been suggested previously as a mortality factor in our study populations. Females in the south became primiparous earlier than females in the north. Primiparous females had significantly smaller litters of cubs than multiparous females. We found no evidence that primiparity was costly in terms of the interlitter interval. Primiparous mothers had a higher probability of cub loss than multiparous mothers. The probability of cub loss was analyzed separately for the pre-mating and the mating season. The probability of cub loss by primiparous females in the pre-mating season increased with both increasing population density and deteriorating food conditions, whereas the probability of cub loss during the mating season decreased with increasing age of primiparity and increased with male turnover (a variable predicting SSI). The temporal patterns of cub loss by primiparous females suggested that the critical times for reproductive success by primiparous females were the pre-mating season (from birth to shortly after leaving the den) and the mating season. Cub loss in these periods was independent and caused by different factors. Cub loss before the mating season seemed to be most influenced by food conditions, whereas that during the mating season appeared to be caused by SSI.  相似文献

During the breeding season of 1991 a total of 608 blue fox vixens aged 1 to 6 years (2.3 +/- 0.1 years, mean +/- SEM) from 2 farms were artificially inseminated intrauterine once with frozen-thawed silver fox semen (1 ml dose containing a total of 150 million spermatozoa). The vixens were allocated to 3 different groups according to the time of insemination. Vixens in Group 1 (n = 203), Group 2 (n = 198), and Group 3 (n = 207) were inseminated on the first, second or third day after the peak value of vaginal electrical resistance, respectively. An overall conception rate of 75% (456 of 608) and 6.0 +/- 0.1 (mean +/- SEM) cubs per litter was obtained. Conception rates and mean litter sizes were significantly different between groups of vixens with respect to day of insemination (P = 0.02, Chisquare, Kruskall-Wallis Test). Vixens inseminated on the second day (Group 2) had the highest conception rate (81%) and the largest mean litter size (7.0 +/- 0.2 cubs) of the three groups, while those inseminated on the third day (Group 3) had the lowest conception rate and mean litter size (70%, 5.4 +/- 0.3 cubs).  相似文献

Handling is a source of stress for farm-bred blue foxes. The influence of handling during the late gestational period was investigated in 10-day old male and female blue foxes. Testosterone and estradiol were measured by RIA in the plasma, gonadal homogenates and in vitro incubates from blue foxes of both sexes. The gonads were incubated in vitro without or with human chorionic gonadotropin. In cubs of both sexes, the gonad weights and ovarian estradiol production were decreased by stress. The testicular testosterone and ovarian estradiol contents were increased in prenatally stressed cubs as compared to the controls. The testicular content and baseline in vitro production of testosterone were not affected by prenatal stress, but the testicular response to human chorionic gonadotropin was higher in the stressed group. This study suggests that prenatal stress induced by handling pregnant vixens may influence gonadal steroidogenesis and this effect was more pronounced in female cubs.  相似文献

We studied the age-structure and the reproductive parameters in two samples of red foxesVulpes vulpes (Linnaeus, 1758) from two contiguous areas in the Ebro valley (NE Spain) differing in the level of deliberate culling and in the habitat quality. Percent of juvenile foxes in the semiarid steppe (under higher persecution) was lower (53%) than in the irrigated highly productive “vegas” (67%). Conversely, foxes in the “vegas” (more favourable habitat) had a larger litter size (3.9 ± 0.23 cubs per female) and a higher amount of barren vixens (19.3%) than in the steppe (3.3 ± 0.12 cubs per female, and 1.7% of barren vixens). In this study, migration due to juvenile dispersal does not hide the effects of the habitat on fox population dynamics, despite the proximity between both areas. The results are discussed in relation to previous studies on red fox population dynamics.  相似文献

Milk intake of fox cubs (2-16 days of age; body weight, 96-649 g) in ten blue fox litters and ten silver fox litters were measured by the water isotope dilution (WID) technique following a single intraperitoneal injection of tritiated water (3HHO). Litter size varied from four to 14 in blue foxes and from three to eight in silver foxes. Silver fox cubs had higher birth weights than blue foxes. Inter-species body weights and growth rates were apparently dependent on litter size and the dam's constitution. In both species growth rate increased with age and body weight (7-35 g per day). In the cubs, the biological half-life of body water turnover (BWT) rose from 1.5 days at 2-3 days of age to 2.5 days at 13-16 days of age, although a considerable scatter was seen. The mean daily milk intake of the cubs varied with body weight, from 31 to 193 g per day, whereas daily milk intake per unit of body mass remained stable at 30-35 g per 100 g body weight. The ratio of milk intake to body weight gain varied considerably among cubs, averaging 4.5 g/g during the 3-week experimental period. In suckling fox cubs, the calculated daily intake of metabolically energy (ME) corresponded fairly with the estimated energy requirements for growth and maintenance of the young. Finally, the applicability and the accuracy of the WID technique was evaluated in ten 3-week-old fox cubs, by tube-feeding with a milk replacer for 48 h, which documented that the daily rates of milk intake and water turnover can be accurately measured in suckling fox cubs by the WID technique following a single injection of 3HHO.  相似文献

Handling is a source of stress for farm bred blue foxes. The influence of handling during the late gestation period on the pituitary--adrenal axis was studied in 10-day old male and female blue foxes. Cortisol and progesterone were measured by radioimmunoassay in the plasma, adrenal homogenates, and in vitro incubates from animals of both sexes. Adrenals were incubated in vitro in the absence or presence of ACTH. In addition, the adrenal weight and plasma concentration of ACTH were assessed. In cubs of both sexes, the adrenal weight was decreased after prenatal stress. The plasma concentration of progesterone and the adrenal cortisol in vitro production were elevated in the prenatally stressed female cubs, as compared to the control, along with the adrenal progesterone in vitro production in prenatally stressed male cubs. The adrenal cortisol and progesterone content and plasma ACTH and cortisol concentrations were not affected by prenatal stress. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that the prenatal stress induced by handling pregnant vixens can affect the pituitary--adrenal axis in neonatal offspring, this effect being more pronounced in female cubs.  相似文献

In the semi-domesticated blue fox, handling stress may influence reproductive performance and increase perinatal pup loss. Ovarian and adrenal steroids were analysed in faecal samples collected from mid-gestation through the first week of lactation in 40 female blue foxes to characterize hormone patterns during this important reproductive period. Daily faecal samples were collected from 40 foxes during 30 pregnancies, one late abortion and nine bred-matched non-pregnancies. Mean concentrations of faecal progestagens over the 10 days before birth were significantly higher in pregnant compared to non-pregnant females (51+/-1.50 microg/g versus 36+/-3.72 microg/g, respectively; P < 0.01). From 10 to 3 days before whelping, total faecal oestrogen concentrations also were higher (P < 0.01) in pregnant (1082+/-41.69 ng/g) than non-pregnant (628+/-72.43 ng/g) foxes, before declining to non-pregnant values (402+/-24.88 ng/g) after parturition. Overall mean faecal corticoid concentrations from 3 to 20 days before whelping differed between pregnant and non-pregnant foxes (128+/-3.11 ng/g versus 103+/-5.86 ng/g, respectively; P < 0.01). Furthermore, in pregnant foxes, corticoid excretion increased further from 2 days before to 3 days after whelping (216+/-13.71 ng/g; P < 0.01). Thereafter, corticoid concentrations were similar between pregnant and non-pregnant females (P > 0.05). In sum, the faecal steroid hormone patterns for oestrogens and progestagens were similar to those previously obtained by analyses of fox serum hormones, with both steroids being higher in pregnant than non-pregnant foxes at the end of gestation. The elevation in corticoid concentrations in pregnant females suggests that adrenal activation is involved in the initiation of parturition in the blue fox. Thus, faecal steroid analyses can be used to monitor ovarian activity during pregnancy and pseudopregnancy in farmed blue fox females.  相似文献

Camera traps deployed at a badger Meles meles set in mixed pine forest in north-eastern Poland recorded interspecific killing of red fox Vulpes vulpes cubs by pine marten Martes martes. The vixen and her cubs settled in the set at the beginning of May 2013, and it was abandoned by the badgers shortly afterwards. Five fox cubs were recorded playing in front of the den each night. Ten days after the first recording of the foxes, a pine marten was filmed at the set; it arrived in the morning, made a reconnaissance and returned at night when the vixen was away from the set. The pine marten entered the den several times and killed at least two fox cubs. It was active at the set for about 2 h. This observation proves that red foxes are not completely safe from predation by smaller carnivores, even those considered to be subordinate species in interspecific competition.  相似文献

Pregnant blue foxes (Alopex lagopus) were administered fenchlorphos (0-0-dimethyl-0-(2,4,5-trichlorophenyl) phos-phorothioate) orally at a dose of 100 mg/kg/day in different periods of gestation. The dose chosen represents the therapeutic dose for the treatment of parasitic lesions. At term the mean number of whelps were recorded, and they were killed and examined for external, visceral and skeletal malformations. Of 19 medicated vixens the mean number of live whelps at term was 1.2 per vixen versus 9.5 in the control group. There was an evident predominance of males in the medicated groups. Several malformations of the head were registered, among them incomplete ossification of the skull bones, cleft palate, hydrocephalus internus and externus. Minor malformations like extra ribs or missing ribs occurred in the medicated groups. Congenital alopecia, hypoplastic kidneys, and hydronephrosis were observed in all the whelps in 1 medicated group. No significant difference in total brain weight, cerebellum weight or the cerebellum-to-total-brain weight was observed. Histological examination of the cerebellum showed a narrowing or absence of the granular and the molecular layers of the cortical zone.  相似文献

The study describes the time course of the Neospora caninum-specific antibody response in experimentally infected foxes, in naturally N. caninum-seropositive vixens and their litters. An immunofluorescence test, a tachyzoite surface antigen based ELISA and an immunoblot assay were established for this purpose. The immunoblot patterns of naturally seropositive and experimentally infected foxes revealed a high degree of similarity and resembled those reported for other intermediate host species. Reactions against immunodominant antigens of Mr 56, 68 and >94 kDa were observed which could be linked with a period of 14 days-2 months post experimental infection with tachyzoites. Cubs born by naturally seropositive vixens were found to be persistently or transiently seropositive, in the latter case, specific antibodies were detected only up to 44 days after birth. These antibodies may thus be of maternal origin. Differences between the immunoblot patterns of persistently positive cubs, those of their mothers and of transiently positive cubs, in particular the differential response to antigens of Mr 56 and 68 kDa, prove that cubs with persistent antibodies had actively mounted an antibody response. This result provides the first evidence for the postnatal or vertical transmission of N. caninum among naturally seropositive foxes.  相似文献

We determined the body composition from the carcasses of three 3- to 4-months-old polar bear cubs found dead at Svalbard, Norway. Two of the cubs were killed by a male bear at the den and one cub died from starvation. These three carcasses weighed 70-77% of total body mass of cubs. The ash and protein content of the three carcasses were similar but the starving cub had higher water content and lower fat content than the two killed cubs. The fat content varied from 1.3% (starving cub) to 12.9% while the content of water and fat was similar (about 76%) in the three cubs. More data on the body composition of polar bear cubs at time of emergence from the den are needed to understand the breeding ecology and reproductive energetics of female polar bears.  相似文献

Maintaining a good cub-rearing relationship is of great significance for the healthy development of newborn giant panda cubs. Oxytocin plays a key role in this cub-rearing relationship development during the breeding period. To investigate the relationship between oxytocin levels and maternal behavior, we sampled the maternal behavior of 6 adult female giant pandas (3 in lactation group, 3 in non-lactation group) at Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding from June to September 2019 by using the focal sampling method, and tested the urine oxytocin level of each individuals by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The results showed that the oxytocin levels were significantly higher in the lactation group (278. 86 pg/mg ±44. 42 pg/mg) than in the non-lactation group. For the two types of breastfeeding groups, the level of oxytocin in the multiparous female pandas (185. 64 pg/mg ±44. 61 pg/mg) was significantly lower than that in the primiparous female pandas (465. 30 pg/mg ±82. 39 pg/mg). Compared with the primiparous female pandas, the multiparous female pandas had more embracing cub behavior (77. 45% ±1. 24%) and feeding behavior (15. 22% ±1. 62%), but less licking cub (14. 26% ±0. 91%) and position adjustment behavior (1. 69% ±0. 29%). Finally, we found the licking cub behavior was significantly positively correlated with the oxytocin level in the lactation group, and the embracing cub behavior was significantly negatively correlated with the oxytocin level in the lactation group. The results indicate that primiparous female pandas show more maternal behavior, less individual behavior and higher oxytocin levels. The results of this study suggest that the different reactions of oxytocin in the two types of giant panda females may help to improve the refined and differentiated breeding techniques for captive giant pandas in the future.  相似文献

During the breeding seasons of 1989 and 1990, a total of 617 blue fox vixens aged 1 to 6 years (mean +/- SEM, 2.6 +/- 0.1) were inseminated with frozen silver fox semen with either 150 million (n = 213, 1989 + 1990), 100 million (n=172, 1990), 75 million (n = 119, 1989) or 37.5 million (n = 113, 1989) spermatozoa per insemination. Two intrauterine inseminations, each with an insemination volume of 1.0 ml, were performed at 24-hour intervals on the first and second days after maximum vaginal electrical resistance was measured. Conception rates were 87% (186 of 213) with 150 million spermatozoa per insemination, 85% (146 of 172) with 100 million, 77% (91 of 119) with 75 million and 68% (77 of 113) with 37.5 million. The mean numbers of cubs per litter +/- SEM for the four groups were 7.6 +/- 0.2 (168 registered litters), 7.5 +/- 0.3 (115 litters), 6.4 +/- 0.4 (86 litters) and 6.4 +/- 0.4 (75 litters). A negative effect on both the conception rate and mean litter size at whelping was observed with decreasing sperm numbers (conception rate percentage: p = 0.0001, Chi-square, litter size: p = 0.02, Kruskal-Wallis Test). Only the two larger numbers of spermatozoa gave litter sizes comparable to those obtained by artificial insemination (AI) with fresh semen.  相似文献

Abstract: We investigated reproductive ecology and cub survival of Florida black bears (Ursus americanus floridanus) in Ocala National Forest and the adjacent residential area of Lynne, Florida, USA, 1999-2003. We documented production of 81 cubs from 39 litters. Average litter size was 2.08 ± 0.11 (SE) cubs. The mean age of first reproduction was 3.25 ± 0.27 years. Excluding females that reproduced in consecutive years due to litter loss, interlitter interval was 2.11 ± 0.11 years. The mean annual fecundity rate was 0.57 ± 0.06. We used expandable radiocollars to monitor the fate of 41 bear cubs. The probability of cubs surviving to 9 months of age was 0.46 ± 0.09 and did not differ between cohorts or study locations. The most important causes of cub mortality included infanticide and mortality caused directly or indirectly by collisions with vehicles. Our results indicate that reproductive rates of female black bears in the Ocala study area are comparable to those reported for other black bear populations from eastern United States, but cub survival rates are lower than those reported for most black bear populations. Management of Florida black bears should emphasize strategies to reduce the mortality of cubs.  相似文献

The arctic fox Alopex lagopus L population in Sweden is small and its numbers fluctuate widely with food availability, l e rodent populations This fluctuation is mediated through differences in recruitment rates between years The recruitment can be divided into three phases number of litters born, number of cubs per litter and cub survival rates The number of litters and their sizes have been shown to depend on food availability during winter and spring To examine cub survival during the summer and how it relates to food availability, we conducted a feeding experiment m northern Sweden during 1990, a year of low rodent density, involving six occupied arctic fox dens Feeding at dens lowered cub mortality rates However, condition and growth rates of juveniles were not influenced by supplementary feeding at dens, nor were they related to the probability of survival for an individual Thus arctic foxes seem to minimize risks rather than maximize growth The juvenile mortality from weaning and over the next 6 wk was 21%, mostly due to starvation Only 82% survived from weaning to the first breeding season Of the one-year-old foxes, 50% survived their second year Supplementary feeding of juveniles had no effect on the final survival rates over these two years However, the immediate, positive effect on cub survival could be used in a long-term, extensive management programme if combined with winter feeding  相似文献

Three hundred forty five adult arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) from all counties in Iceland were examined for excess cerumen and ear canker mites (Otodectes cynotis). Only 13 foxes (4%) from a single county in northwestern Iceland were infested, where the prevalence of otodectiasis was 38%. Whether or not this parasite is new to the arctic fox in Iceland is unknown. If it is recently introduced, possible sources of infestation are farmed silver foxes (Vulpes vulpes), domestic dogs, domestic or feral cats, and arctic foxes from Greenland. It appears that the rate of transmission between adult foxes is low; a more common route of transmission is probably from the mother to her offspring or between vixens breeding in the same dens in subsequent years by contamination of the dens. No correlation was found between the prevalence of mites in foxes and Samson character.  相似文献
