Food and feeding ecology of piscivorous fishes at Lake St Lucia, Zululand   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The food and feeding ecology of piscivorous fish in Lake St Lucia was monitored for two years. Piscivorous fishes feed predominantly on the planktivorous Gilchristella aestuarius and Thryssa vitrirostris but a wide range of prey species was recorded. Numbers of the predominant piscivores, Argyrosomus hololepidotus and Elops machnata , in an area appear to be related to the densities of their major prey, T. vitrirostris and G. aestuarius . Large piscivorous fishes are restricted to the deeper portions of the lake, whereas small piscivores such as Johnius belengerii and Terapon jarbua feed predominantly on small fishes in the littoral zone. The highly significant correlation between the composition of prey fish species in the lake and prey fish species in the diet of piscivorous fishes, indicates that piscivores are feeding in a density dependent manner. However, factors such as habitat, fish size and swimming speed of prey species are shown to be important in prey selection. Juvenile fish of species such as Sarotherodon mossambicus, Liza macrolepis and Acanthopagrus berda remain in shallow marginal areas, thus avoiding large piscivorous fishes. However by frequenting shallow areas these species become vulnerable to bird predators, especially egrets and herons.  相似文献

Predation on the non-native cyprinid, Pseudorasbora parva, was reported during an annual study in a small connecting canal about 40 km south of Brno, Czech Republic. Two cyprinid fish species (Pseudorasbora parva, Rutilus rutilus) were identified in the diet of 23 piscivores belonging to three native fishes (Perca fluviatilis, Sander lucioperca, Esox lucius). The relative abundance of prey fishes changed seasonally and was dominated by the topmouth gudgeon in spring. Thereafter roach incidence continuously increased. In contrast, topmouth gudgeon was found to be a more sized-available prey and was the most dominant prey species in the diet of all piscivorous fishes during the whole season. Strong piscivory towards this alien might be beneficial for its eradication or control to support ecological integrity in natural and modified seminatural habitats.  相似文献

With more than 2000 fish species the Cyprinidae is the largest family of vertebrates. Lake Tana, a large lake (3050 km2) situated in the NW‐ highlands of Ethiopia, harbours, as far as we know the only remaining intact species flock of large (max. 100 cm FL) cyprinid fishes (15 Barbus spp.). One of the most intriguing aspects of this endemic Barbus species flock is the large number of piscivores (8). Cyprinid fishes seem not well designed for piscivory, they lack teeth in the oral jaw, have a small slit‐shaped pharyngeal cavity and all lack a stomach with low pH for digesting large prey. Many barbs are benthivorous species, like the ancestral barb in Lake Tana's isolated system. Why then is piscivory, which is rare among cyprinids, so common in Lake Tana Barbus? The aim of present study was to compare the performance and techniques of these piscivorous Barbus with known piscivores from other fish families. We studied prey handling times over prey size, prey capture using high‐speed movies, and assessed the effect of prey size on performance and prey selection in the field. Performances were explained by functional morphology of their feeding system. Overall, Lake Tana's piscivorous Barbus perform relatively 'poor', compared to piscivores from other fish families. For example, Lake Tana's piscivores are only able to handle prey fish smaller than 16% of their own body length. However, Lake Tana lacks potential piscivorous competitors, rendering the piscivorous Barbus by far the 'best' and apparently highly successful. They have adapted to all available macro‐habitats (littoral, offshore pelagic and offshore benthic), using different techniques (ambush, pursuit and cruising), a unique scenario for barbs.  相似文献

The functional feeding response forms of piscivorous fishes used in multispecies and ecosystem modeling have been questioned because they were mostly conjectural or solely based on laboratory studies. Here, we investigate the functional feeding response of seven species of piscivorous fishes on four species of their prey from the northeast US continental shelf using field data that spans 30 years. Our study confirmed that Holling’s types II and III functional responses are the most common functional responses for piscivorous fishes in this region. However, our analyses also revealed that differences exist between piscivorous fishes’ functional responses, and, therefore, combining functional responses of piscivores is probably not appropriate in multispecies and ecosystem modeling. In the absence of specific predator–prey functional responses, we suggest that, for cruising, actively attacking predators, a type II functional response is slightly preferable; for a sedentary, ambush predator, a type III functional response is slightly preferable; at low prey densities for a generic fish predator, a type III functional response should be used; and at moderate to high prey densities, either should work sufficiently. Because we have shown that the functional response of a particular predator to individual prey species varies, these relationships must be further evaluated as we continue to develop and employ multispecies and ecosystem modeling.  相似文献

The feeding rates and vertical distribution of the freshwater leech Nephelopsis obscura, fed on different densities of third instar Chironomus riparius, were determined in the laboratory at three different constant dissolved oxygen regimes (10%, 100%, 300% saturation) at 15 °C. The rate of feeding increased linearly with prey density up to maximal field prey densities, with no satiation response. Analysis of covariance showed that the rate (slope) at which prey were consumed was not significantly different among oxygen regimes but the amount eaten at any given prey density was higher in higher dissolved oxygen saturations. Analysis of the vertical distribution of N. obscura at different oxygen saturations and prey densities showed a higher proportion of N. obscura on or in the mud substrate compared to the water column at 100% and 300%. No correlation was found between prey density and the vertical distribution of N. obscura, but the numbers of prey eaten were correlated with the proportion of N. obscura on the mud substrate. These results indicate that higher percentage dissolved oxygen regimes increase the feeding of N. obscura and are of potential importance in explaining the seasonal depth distribution and microdistribution patterns recorded for N. obscura.  相似文献

Occurrence of cannibalism and inferior competitive ability of predators compared to their prey have been suggested to promote coexistence in size-structured intraguild predation (IGP) systems. The intrinsic size-structure of fish provides the necessary prerequisites to test whether the above mechanisms are general features of species interactions in fish communities where IGP is common. We first experimentally tested whether Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) were more efficient as a cannibal than as an interspecific predator on the prey fish ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) and whether ninespine stickleback were a more efficient competitor on the shared zooplankton prey than its predator, Arctic char. Secondly, we performed a literature survey to evaluate if piscivores in general are more efficient as cannibals than as interspecific predators and whether piscivores are inferior competitors on shared resources compared to their prey fish species. Both controlled pool experiments and outdoor pond experiments showed that char imposed a higher mortality on YOY char than on ninespine sticklebacks, suggesting that piscivorous char is a more efficient cannibal than interspecific predator. Estimates of size dependent attack rates on zooplankton further showed a consistently higher attack rate of ninespine sticklebacks compared to similar sized char on zooplankton, suggesting that ninespine stickleback is a more efficient competitor than char on zooplankton resources. The literature survey showed that piscivorous top consumers generally selected conspecifics over interspecific prey, and that prey species are competitively superior compared to juvenile piscivorous species in the zooplankton niche. We suggest that the observed selectivity for cannibal prey over interspecific prey and the competitive advantage of prey species over juvenile piscivores are common features in fish communities and that the observed selectivity for cannibalism over interspecific prey has the potential to mediate coexistence in size structured intraguild predation systems.  相似文献

The objectives of this work were to quantify the spatial and temporal distribution of the occurrence of anadromous fishes (alewife Alosa pseudoharengus, blueback herring Alosa aestivalis and American shad Alosa sapidissima) in the stomachs of demersal fishes in coastal waters of the north‐west Atlantic Ocean. Results show that anadromous fishes were detectable and quantifiable in the diets of common marine piscivores for every season sampled. Even though anadromous fishes were not the most abundant prey, they accounted for c. 5–10% of the diet by mass for several marine piscivores. Statistical comparisons of these data with fish diet data from a broad‐scale survey of the north‐west Atlantic Ocean indicate that the frequency of this trophic interaction was significantly higher within spatially and temporally focused sampling areas of this study than in the broad‐scale survey. Odds ratios of anadromous predation were as much as 460 times higher in the targeted sampling as compared with the broad‐scale sampling. Analyses indicate that anadromous prey consumption was more concentrated in the near‐coastal waters compared with consumption of a similar, but more widely distributed species, the Atlantic herring Clupea harengus. In the context of ecosystem‐based fisheries management, the results suggest that even low‐frequency feeding events may be locally important, and should be incorporated into ecosystem models.  相似文献

The food and feeding habits of five economically important fresh-and brackish-water fishes, Channa obscura, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, Heterotis niloticus, Synodontis nigrita and Trachinotus maxillosus, were investigated. A number of techniques were used to carry out gut content analysis, including the Hynes 'point' system based on volume estimations expressed as relative percentages. Juveniles of C. nigrodigitatus were omnivorous, consuming 32% gastropods, 30% nematodes, 14% diatoms and 8% crustaceans, while adults were planktotrophic, consuming 23% diatoms, 33% Chlorophyceae and 22% crustaceans. Synodontis nigrita juveniles fed almost exclusively (91%) on nematodes, while adults were predominantly planktotrophic, their diet comprising 50% diatoms and 50% crustaceans. Trachinotus maxillosus was exclusively benthotrophic, consuming 99.5% gastropods and 0.46% nematodes. Heterotis niloticus was planktotrophic at the adult stage and consumed 72% crustaceans, 12% gastropods, 3% fish and about 90% planktotrophic at the juvenile phase. Chrysichthys obscura was purely benthotrophic at the juvenile stage, feeding 100% on nematodes, but fed mainly (89%) on fish at the adult stage.  相似文献

Synopsis Analysis of the piscivore guild in fish species-rich lake and stream systems in eastern Ontario showed the co-occurrence of three types: (1) specialists that became piscivorous at the age of a few weeks (Esox, Micropterus); (2) ‘secondary’ piscivores that are fish-eaters only later in life (Perca, Ambloplites); and (3) species in which fish consumption is limited to taking some larvae (Lepomis macrochirus). In the first group the basic series of dietary shifts that characterize many long-lived fish (i.e. zooplankton followed by small invertebrates then large invertebrates and finally fish); is greatly accelerated. Prey size increases with growth. Overall prey selection was on the basis of body size and abundance. Most piscivores took a range of fish prey. There was little evidence of specialization at the species level. Esox and Micropterus spawn some weeks ahead of their major prey species. This is seen as adaptive. Their young harvest the larvae of the latter. The ensuing predator/prey association with growth is highly advantageous to the piscivore as prey of optimum body size are thus continually available.  相似文献

A total of 298 fish specimens belonging to seven families were caught during ichthyoplanktonic survey of three rivers within the Ewekoro cement facility catchment area located in southwestern Nigeria. The highest numbers of specimens were caught from Alaguntan (37.0%) and Elebute (36.6%) rivers while 28.9% of the fish samples were collected from Itori River. The fish population and species diversity recorded in the catchment rivers were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than comparative catches from Ewekoro River located about 30 km downstream of the factory operational area. The food items ingested by the specimens across the seasons in the catchment rivers revealed obvious differences in diet with some degree of overlap in the fish trophic preferences. However, the omnivorous species dominated the catches in each of the rivers, irrespective of season. Categorization of the fish specimens based on habitat-related adaptive physiology showed that a significant number of the fish from Alaguntan and Itori Rivers have accessory respiratory organs. The four species with accessory respiratory organs were Polypterus senegalus Curv., Clarias gariepinus C. & V., Ctenopoma kingslayae Gun. and Channa obscura Smith. Of the 12 fish species recorded in the Ewekoro cement facility catchment rivers, only P. senegalus, C. gariepinus, C. obscura and Oreochromis niloticus (Trew.) are valuable food fishes in southwestern Nigeria.  相似文献

The effect of digestion by a predatory fish (largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides) on stable isotopic (δ13C and δ18O) and trace elemental (Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca) compositions of prey fish (bluegill Lepomis macrochirus) otoliths was investigated in a laboratory experiment. Trace element and stable‐isotopic signatures of L. macrochirus otoliths were not significantly altered for up to 16 h after L. macrochirus were consumed by M. salmoides. Prey fish otoliths recovered from predator digesta can retain environmental stable isotopic and trace elemental signatures, suggesting that determination of environmental history for prey fishes by stable‐isotope and trace‐element analysis of otoliths recovered from stomachs of piscivorous fishes will be feasible.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b (cyt b) sequence variation among the clariid fishes of Lake Victoria and the Malagarasi wetland Tanzania were studied between August 2003 and February 2005. Seven species were sampled and together with 26 cyt b sequences from GenBank were used to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships in the family Clariidae. The study revealed two clades: one consisting of the big‐head species, Clarias gariepinus and Heterobranchus longifilis, and the other of small‐sized species, Clarias werneri, Clarias alluaudi, Clarias liocephalus and Clariallabes petricola. The study further revealed that the genus Clarias is paraphyletic and that H. longifilis clusters deeply inside the Clarias group. Although H. longifilis is thought to be the oldest in evolutionary age in Tanzania, it is not close to the ancestor of the Clariidae family. The results also showed that C. werneri and C. alluaudi are genetically distinct from each other.  相似文献

The chemosensory detection of prey by the freshwater leech Nephelopsis obscura (Erpobdellidae) was investigated in the laboratory. Without direct tactile contact N. obscura of all three size classes tested were unable to detect and react to any of the prey types (Gammarus lacustris, Chironomus sp., Tubifex sp) or prey conditions (live, asphyxiated, homogenate) tested. The length of the starvation period (0–56 days) did not affect these results, nor did it increase activity. N. obscura thus appears to be an opportunistic wanderer rather than a stalker-hunter.  相似文献

The diets of sympatric predators may overlap, especially when their body sizes are similar and foraging area is relatively small. It may be also supposed that some differences in their foraging strategies may counteract competitive interactions among them, and therefore be of advantage to these species. To reveal such phenomena the composition of food of cormorant and adult pikeperch was studied in the Dobczyce Reservoir (S Poland) from June to November 2002. The main prey species were the same and the range of prey size was similar for both piscivores. Despite these similarities, the potential for dietary overlap was strongly reduced due to two differences in their foraging patterns: (1) different preferred prey species (cormorants foraged mainly roach, whereas pikeperch selected juvenile percids); (2) different size of simultaneously selected prey (in summer, cormorants selected larger prey, while in autumn larger prey was selected by pikeperch). These differences may be explained by some general features of birds and fishes, which determine the costs to the individual of capturing prey. The observed selection of different prey species and sizes may be also important for the co-occurrence of other piscivorous birds and fishes sharing common food resources.  相似文献

Numbers and biomass of piscivorous fish and their predation on other fish may often be high in undisturbed coral reef communities. The effects of such predation have sometimes been studied by removal of piscivores (either experimentally or by fishermen). Such perturbations have usually involved removal of large, highly vulnerable, mobile piscivores that are often actively sought in fisheries. The effects of fishing on smaller, demersal, semi-resident piscivores have been little studied. We studied such effects on the fish communities of patch reefs at Midway atoll by experimentally removing major resident, demersal, piscivorous fishes. First, four control reefs and four experimental reefs were selected, their dimensions and habitats mapped, and their visible fish communities censused repeatedly over 1 year. Census of all control and experimental reefs was continued for the following 39 months, during which known piscivores were collected repeatedly by hand spearing. Records were kept of catch and effort to calculate CPUE as an index of predator density. Spearfishing on the experimental reefs removed 2504 piscivorous fish from 12 families and 43 taxa (mostly species). The species richness of the catch did not show an overall change over the duration of the experiment. Spearman rank correlation analysis showed some unexpected positive correlations for density in numbers and biomass of major fished piscivorous groups (especially lizardfish) over the experiment. Only two relatively minor fished piscivorous taxa declined in abundance over the experiment, while the overall abundance of piscivores increased. Visual censuses of fish on the experimental reefs also failed to show reduction of total piscivores over the full experimental period. No significant trend in the abundance of lizardfish censused over the full period was apparent on any of the control reefs. The high resilience of piscivores on these experimental reefs to relatively intense fishing pressure could result from their protracted recruitment seasons, high immigration rates, cryptic habits, or naturally high abundances. A major factor was the high immigration rates of lizardfish, replacing lizardfish and other less mobile piscivores removed from the reefs by spearing. On the fished reefs, the removed lizardfish population replaced itself >20 times during the experiment; other piscivorous taxa replaced themselves only 5 times.  相似文献

Piscivory is a key ecological function in aquatic ecosystems, mediating energy flow within trophic networks. However, our understanding of the nature of piscivory is limited; we currently lack an empirical assessment of the dynamics of prey capture and how this differs between piscivores. We therefore conducted aquarium‐based performance experiments, to test the feeding abilities of 19 piscivorous fish species. We quantified their feeding morphology, striking, capturing, and processing behavior. We identify two major functional groups: grabbers and engulfers. Grabbers are characterized by horizontal, long‐distance strikes, capturing their prey tailfirst and subsequently processing their prey using their oral jaw teeth. Engulfers strike from short distances, from high angles above or below their prey, engulfing their prey and swallowing their prey whole. Based on a meta‐analysis of 2,209 published in situ predator–prey relationships in marine and freshwater aquatic environments, we show resource partitioning between grabbers and engulfers. Our results provide a functional classification for piscivorous fishes delineating patterns, which transcend habitats, that may help explain size structures in fish communities.  相似文献

We conducted a series of size-structured laboratory experiments to quantify and compare the susceptibility of several estuarine and marine forage fishes to attack and capture by piscivorous predators. Size-dependent estimates of capture success, handling time, and prey profitability were generated from single-species experiments offering bay anchovy, Atlantic menhaden, Atlantic silverside, and age-0 striped bass to piscivores. Bay anchovy and Atlantic menhaden were most susceptible to capture and yielded high profitability compared to Atlantic silverside and age-0 striped bass prey. Variation in capture success among forage species was particularly influential in generating disparate profitability functions. Although morphological differences among forage species contributed to variation in susceptibility to predation, behavioral analyses indicated that variable reaction distances to approaching predators and activity levels of prey may explain a large fraction of the observed differences in susceptibility. When several forage species were offered to predators simultaneously in larger enclosures, mortality was highest and occurred earlier for bay anchovy and Atlantic menhaden compared to other prey, which points to the strong influence of predator capture success on overall forage fish vulnerability. Our results demonstrate species-specific differences among forage fishes in the ability to avoid attack and capture by piscivores, and we conclude that the expression of antipredator behaviors contributes significantly to variation in forage species vulnerability.  相似文献
