Abstract.
- 1 200 of 1137 species of British microlepidoptera make a single marked change in feeding habit as they grow.
- 2 Most numerous are species that change from leaf mining to one of case bearing, spinning, tying and rolling or concealed feeding, and species that change from concealed feeding to case bearing or spinning, tying and rolling.
- 3 Although in some instances numbers of closely related species make similar changes in behaviour, most changes observed are scattered among subfamilies.
- 4 Leaf miners have considerably smaller adults than concealed feeders, which themselves are smaller than external feeders and spinners, tiers and rollers. When case bearers are excluded from the analyses, species that remain as leaf miners or concealed feeders throughout larval development are on average smaller as adults than those that start out with these feeding habits but later change.
- 5 We suggest a number of reasons why larvae might make such fundamental switches.

Temperate Lepidoptera typically have life cycles of a year or less. The time available to feed and attain a suitable state for reproduction might thus constrain potential life-history patterns, and species characteristics such as adult size, overwintering stage, first month of larval feeding and feeding specificity may only occur in particular combinations. Several studies have documented correlates of feeding ecology which suggest this is indeed the case. We use data for more than 900 British macrolepidoptera to establish relationships among several ecological and life-history variables to determine whether only particular combinations can occur. Few patterns of feeding characteristics predicted in the literature are observed. Distinct, consistent life-history syndromes cannot be defined; almost any combination of the life-history characteristics we looked at can occur. So long as it is possible to fit in with timing constraints at certain critical times of year, there seems to be a great deal of flexibility in how the rest of the time can be filled. However, several broad and potentially interesting patterns still emerge. Polyphagous species are larger than specialists; the month in which species start to feed inlinked to both their overwintering stage and the growth form of the plant they feed upon; and there are no species overwintering in the egg stage and having two broods per year. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Feeding behaviour of fifth instar tobacco hornworm caterpillars, Manduca sexta (Johansen) (Lepidoptera; Sphingidae), eating tobacco or artificial diet, is quantitatively described. The insects grow at the same rate on both foods. There is no daily rhythm of feeding behaviour. For most insects, feeding on either food occurs in bouts with the lengths of interfeed gaps and of feeding bouts appearing to be distributed randomly. However, in many insects there is a strong correlation between the length of a feeding period and that of the preceding non-feeding period.
The proportion of time spent feeding on tobacco is much greater than on artificial diet. On tobacco, feeding periods are separated by shorter interfeed gaps than on the artificial diet, while the rate of bout initiation is similar on either food.
On both tobacco and artificial diet, the proportion of time spent feeding increases as the fifth stadium proceeds. This is due to both longer feeding bouts and shorter gaps. The rate of food acquisition within bouts does not change during the stadium. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Seedling Sorghum bicolor cv.65D was rejected at palpation by nymphs of Locusta migratoria L. unless the surface wax was removed. The wax by itself was unpalatable, and when fractionated chromatographically into constituent chemicals its deterrent effects were attributable to the p -hydroxybenzal-dehyde, n -alkane, and ester fractions. Analysis of these last two fractions showed that they were unusual in that the carbon chain lengths of the molecules were shorter than expected from previous literature, and it was these smaller molecules (tested as pure chemicals) that were repellent to L.migratoria. The short-chain esters are more volatile than the ineffective longer-chain ones, and it is proposed that the insect may detect these chemicals by short-range olfaction and hence reject the plant before biting, thus imparting a more effective defence to the plant. 相似文献

While most adult Lepidoptera use flower nectar as their primary food source, butterflies in the genus Heliconius have evolved the novel ability to acquire amino acids from consuming pollen. Heliconius butterflies collect pollen on their proboscis, moisten the pollen with saliva, and use a combination of mechanical disruption and chemical degradation to release free amino acids that are subsequently re-ingested in the saliva. Little is known about the molecular mechanisms of this complex pollen feeding adaptation. Here we report an initial shotgun proteomic analysis of saliva from Heliconius melpomene. Results from liquid-chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry confidently identified 31 salivary proteins, most of which contained predicted signal peptides, consistent with extracellular secretion. Further bioinformatic annotation of these salivary proteins indicated the presence of four distinct functional classes: proteolysis (10 proteins), carbohydrate hydrolysis (5), immunity (6), and “housekeeping” (4). Additionally, six proteins could not be functionally annotated beyond containing a predicted signal sequence. The presence of several salivary proteases is consistent with previous demonstrations that Heliconius saliva has proteolytic capacity. It is likely that these proteins play a key role in generating free amino acids during pollen digestion. The identification of proteins functioning in carbohydrate hydrolysis is consistent with Heliconius butterflies consuming nectar, like other lepidopterans, as well as pollen. Immune-related proteins in saliva are also expected, given that ingestion of pathogens is a likely route to infection. The few “housekeeping” proteins are likely not true salivary proteins and reflect a modest level of contamination that occurred during saliva collection. Among the unannotated proteins were two sets of paralogs, each seemingly the result of a relatively recent tandem duplication. These results offer a first glimpse into the molecular foundation of Heliconius pollen feeding and provide a substantial advance towards comprehensively understanding this striking evolutionary novelty. 相似文献

An automated device was used to examine, in detail, feeding on disks of wheat germ medium by fifth-instar Manduca sextacaterpillars. Comparisons were made between some animals which had ad libitum access to food at all times and others which were deprived of food for 1–5 h before being tested. Feeding patterns of both groups indicated regulation of feeding both between and within meals. Deprived animals ate more during their first meal than did nondeprived animals chiefly by increasing (a) the number of chewing bouts (and thus the meal duration) and (b) the bite frequency. Calculations indicated that the deficit caused by deprivation was made up during the first meal. However, deprived animals continued to eat more than nondeprived ones in subsequent feeding also. Passage of food through the gut was examined by dissecting out the contents of each region of the gut at various times after a colored test meal. Food passed through the foregut directly into the anterior part of the midgut. It stayed in the middle third of the midgut longer than in the anterior and posterior thirds, and the first pellet resulting from the test meal appeared 4 h after the meal. The following mechanisms of feeding regulation are proposed: (a) volumetric feedback mediated by stretch receptors of the foregut and anterior third of the midgut which terminates meals; (b) the development and subsequent reduction of satietyspecific behaviors mediated either by stretch receptors or by some other means which, e.g., allow the next meal to begin; and (c) metabolites whose levels drop during deprivation, triggering a series of events which lead to the excess feeding observed. 相似文献

Investigations into the mechanisms underpinning plant selection by herbivores have often yielded conflicting results. Such inconsistency might stem from whether selection experiments are conducted with captive or wild populations, and upon the different measures of plant selection used to determine herbivore preference. Here we compared the feeding preferences of captive and wild kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus) using a standard set of plant species (14 Hakea spp., Proteaceae) and several measures of herbivore selection to examine how environment influenced relative consumption. Three indices of herbivore consumption were measured: number of plants (NP), total shoot volume per plant (TV) and percentage available shoot volume (PV) consumed. NP and TV were closely correlated in the wild and captive populations and consistently correlated with six morphological and chemical plant attributes examined, the most notable being a strong negative correlation with shoot phenolic content. This uniformity suggests that plant selection by captive kangaroos is broadly consistent with that observed in field trials, and consequently that for macropods, at least, captive trials offer a valid way to determine the relative acceptability of different plant species. However, the fact that our third measure of herbivore selection PV was weakly correlated in captive and wild populations and showed no relationship with shoot phenolic content highlights the importance of which measure of plant selection is applied. We suggest that, while NP and TV are potentially confounded by plant size and availability, they offer the clearest insight into plant selection from the point of view of the herbivore, while PV is more suitable for plant‐centred studies. 相似文献

跳甲属昆虫广布全世界,已知300多种,体色近似,外形差异不大,分类鉴定十分困难。但其中许多种类具特殊的食性特征,其寄主植物常是分类鉴定的向导和重要参考。作者分析了已知有寄主记录的59种跳甲的寄主,并根据其寄主范围划分为5种类型:取食多科、2科、1科多属、1科2属及1科1属,而以1科1属型为最多,占67.8%。至目前所知,其寄主范围限于双子叶植物,跳甲和寄主植物之间的对应关系是跳甲的“种”对植物的“属”。值得特别关注的是寄主植物的“种”与跳甲“亚种”之间的分化关系。成虫的取食范围大于幼虫,幼虫保持原始的取食特征。跳甲的同域物种分化可能通过食性转化而进行,食性转化可能先从成虫开始。成幼食性观察是研究寄主转移的关键。 相似文献

Synopsis The silver arawana, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, hunts along shorelines and within flooded forests in the Amazon River basin and supplements its limited consumption of aquatic vertebrates by leaping from the water to obtain terrestrial and arboreal prey. We offered O. bicirrhosum prey both suspended above and submerged below the surface of the water. From high-speed digital recordings, we measured kinematic variables associated with the jaws, cranium, pectoral fins, and body during orientation and prey capture. Aquatic and aerial feeding events were kinematically distinct, with aerial events generally involving faster, larger movements and a distinct delay in the onset of lower jaw depression until the head had left the water. The comparatively large gape during leaping may facilitate prey capture by overcoming variability in the apparent position of the prey due to refraction, while the delayed onset of mouth opening may serve to reduce the effects of drag. This distinctive leaping behaviour allows exploitation of the terrestrial prey base, especially during seasonal inundation of the Amazon River basin when the aquatic food base is widely dispersed. 相似文献

Daily feeding patterns of tank-reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr under ambient conditions and their relationship with patterns of aggression were investigated during spring and autumn. A single, early afternoon feeding peak was observed during spring but no consistent pattern emerged from the autumn trial (fish did tend to feed in synchrony, even though the population's feeding pattern varied between days). Aggression was highest at first light during both spring and autumn, reducing thereafter throughout the day. Feeding and aggression were out of phase during spring, with the level of feeding increasing as aggression decreased. It is suggested that the high levels of early morning aggression are associated with re-establishment of the social order that breaks down after a period of darkness; in the spring this may have inhibited feeding. 相似文献

Canine morphology is analysed at seven intervals along the crown in both anteroposterior and lateromedial perspective in seven species of large felids. The puma and the snow leopard have stout, rather conical canines, whereas those of lions, jaguars, and tigers bear substantial resemblance to each other, reflecting their phylogenetic relationships, and are less conical and large. The canines of the leopard are intermediate in morphology between those of the other species, probably reflecting its more generalized diet. The clouded leopard has very large and blade-like canines, which are different from the other analysed species. Canine bending strengths to estimated bite forces appear to differs less among the species than morphology, indicating that the evolution of canines has been constricted with respect to their strength in failure, probably owing to their being equally important for species fitness. However, the clouded leopard again stands out, having a high estimated bite force and rather weak canines in bending about the anteroposterior as well as lateromedial planes compared to the other species. Canine morphology to some extent reflects differences in killing mode, but also appears to be related to the phylogeny. The relationships between infant feeding patterns, infant weight status, and subsequent growth are not yet firmly established. This study attempts to address these topics among Samoan children. The study population consists of 1,186 children born between October 1974 and September 1976 who were subsequently seen in the Well Baby Clinic in American Samoa. On the basis of the clinic records the children were categorized into feeding groups (breast vs. bottle) and weight-for-length groups (<25th percentile or >75th percentile of National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) standards). A survey of 74 of these children was conducted in 1982. The average age of the children was 6.6 years. Twenty anthropometric measurements were taken and divided into three groups: skeletal, adipose, and mixed. Multiple analysis of variance was used on each of the groups of measurements to assess effects of infant feeding and weight-for-length. This analysis demonstrated significant relationships between infant weight-for-length and childhood skeletal size (heavy infants are larger children); between infant feeding patterns and childhood adiposity (bottle-fed children are fatter); and between both infant patterns and the mixed measurements (heavy and bottle-fed infants are heavier children with larger circumferences). The relationship between infant weight-for-length and skeletal size may be a continuation of infant patterns of high musculoskeletal weight in heavy infants. The relationship between infant feeding and childhood fatness was not affected by family income. 相似文献

The probing behaviour of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Sitobion avenae (F.) and the feeding behaviour of several slug species, (Deroceras reticulatum (Müller), Arion distinctus Mabille, Agriolimax caruanae Pollonera, Maximus sp.) were assessed on seedlings of winter barley (Hordeum marinum) treated with different concentrations of azadirachtin. Settling behaviour of both aphid species was strongly biased towards the untreated seedlings or those treated with low concentrations of azadirachtin. Concentrations of <500 ppm were effective with topical application and probing activity was reduced for at least 4 days after application. Systemic activity of azadirachtin against cereal aphids was also demonstrated. Feeding behaviour of the slug species, as seen by the amount of leaf eaten compared to the controls, was not affected by the presence of azadirachtin at those concentrations which deterred aphids from feeding. The relevance of these results to crop protection is discussed. 相似文献

Laboratory experiments were performed on the schooling and feeding behaviour of Trichogaster fasciatus . There was a tendency on the part of individuals of similar size to school together; the instinct being stronger in younger specimens. Unavailability of similar-sized individuals led to schooling by members of different size-groups. Column feeding was exhibited by the fish. While feeding at the bottom, the fishes formed angles varying from 30°90°. Larger individuals formed a right angle more often than younger members of the species. Optimum degree of crowding seemed necessary for active feeding as confinement of single individual, or overcrowded condition, both resulted in a decline of feeding activity. 相似文献

The design features of gustatory systems are considered in relation to the need for insect herbivores (or indeed any animal) to regulate their nutrient intake. The gustatory system (defined to include both peripheral and central components) should ideally be designed to reflect: (a) the average nutritional requirements of the insect during its various developmental stages; (b) the predictably unpredictable variation in nutrient supply-demand which occurs about that average; and (c) the distribution and composition of foods available in the environment. A mathematical model is presented which makes detailed predictions regarding behavioural and electrophysiological responses to foods or simple solutions varying in nutrient content. 相似文献

Data are presented for developmental changes in feeding behaviour within and across the fourth and fifth stadium of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) caterpillars fed nutritionally homogeneous semi‐synthetic foods. We recorded the microstructure of feeding over continuous 12‐h periods on consecutive days throughout the two stadia, and in one experiment recorded continuously for 21 h. Larvae in the two stadia showed the same general pattern of macro‐events in feeding, including a similar duration of post‐ecdysis fast, which was usually broken by consumption of the exuviae, and then a sustained period in which discrete meals on the experimental food were taken regularly. There were, however, some distinct differences in the patterns of meal‐taking both between stadia and across different one‐third time segments within stadia. Considering between‐stadium differences, the proportion of time spent feeding differed significantly only in the last segment of the feeding period of the two stadia, with the value for the fourth‐instar larvae being substantially greater than for fifth‐instar larvae. As regards within stadium changes, the proportion of time feeding increased from the first to the second segment of both stadia. However, whereas the proportion of time feeding increased from the second to the final segment of the fourth stadium, it decreased across the same period in the fifth stadium. These patterns of changes in the proportion of time feeding within and between stadia, and their behavioural mechanisms (combination of meal durations and meal frequencies), can be explained only partially with reference to increasing food requirements with development. Three areas are identified where further study might help elucidate the reasons for the observed developmental changes in the microstructure of feeding: allometric constraint, the dynamic links between ingestion and post‐ingestive processing, and ecological factors such as predation. 相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of depriving dairy cows of the ability to feed and lie down for short periods, on behaviour and production. In experiment 1, cows were deprived by confining them in pairs in a pen for 2 or 4 h, and they more frequently exhibited behaviour likely to suggest discomfort - leg stamping, repositioning themselves, shifting their weight between legs and butting. After deprivation, the cows deprived for 2 h made up their lost feeding time within 24 h, but cows deprived for 4 h did not restore their feeding time within the 41-h period of observation. Lying time was not restored in either treatment within the 41-h period. Milk yield was not affected by the treatment. However, in experiment 2, when cows were deprived of feeding and lying for 4 h, during which time their hooves were trimmed (which is likely to be a painful and stressful procedure and result in some discomfort for a period post-trimming) the evidence suggested that milk yield was reduced by approximately 2 l/day for 3 days, with corresponding increases during the subsequent 2 days. Walking speed on returning to the herd was the same as before the treatment. In summary, temporary deprivation of feeding and lying for 2 and 4 h/day induced behaviours that were indicative of discomfort and frustration but had no negative effect on milk production, except when 4 h of deprivation was accompanied by foot trimming. 相似文献
