1. The effects of spawning coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) on the limnephilid caddisfly Ecclisomyia conspersa were evaluated by experimentally excluding salmon from the upper 14‐m stretch of a spawning channel by a wire‐meshed fence. Density, and development and growth rates, of larvae upstream of the fence (without salmon) were compared with those downstream (with salmon). 2. Larval density in the stretch with salmon declined during spawning, but increased again after spawning subsided and the carcasses of dead fish became available. In the stretch with salmon, larval density on salmon carcasses was seven to 37 times greater than on the adjacent channel substratum. The rate of larval development in the stretch with salmon was greater than that in the stretch without salmon. Two months after carcasses became available, 98% of larvae sampled from the stretch with salmon were in the fifth instar, compared to only 23% from the stretch without salmon. Body weight of E. conspersa in the stretches with and without salmon increased by an average of 3.04 and 2.38 mg, respectively, over a 6‐month period. 3. 15N values of larvae from the stretch with salmon increased following the arrival of the fish, suggesting that the larvae were feeding on salmon‐derived material, such as eggs and carcasses, which contain a high proportion of the heavier stable isotope. In contrast, 15N values of larvae from the stretch without salmon remained relatively constant throughout the experiment. The availability of salmon carcasses as a high‐quality food source late in larval development may increase survival and fecundity of E. conspersa. 4. These substantial differences were consistent with the view that they were due to the experimental exclusion of salmon and salmon carcasses from the upstream stretch, though the study was un‐replicated and thus precludes ascribing causation more definitely.  相似文献

Cadmium, Zn, Pb and Cu uptake and effects in larvae ofChironomus riparius (Meigen) were studied in an integrated laboratory investigation, in which metal analyses in different instar stages, uptake kinetics and effects on development and growth were considered in three separate experiments. In short-term experiments with fourth instar larvae, it was demonstrated that only a minor portion of metals was adsorbed on the larval exoskeletons. No conclusive evidence on the uptake mechanism was found, but active uptake of trace metals seemed highly unlikely. In partial life cycle experiments, all four metals studied were readily accumulated in chironomid larvae. Uptake could be described satisfactorily utilizing a first-order one-compartment uptake model which incorporated growth. In all cases steady state conditions were approached and high uptake and elimination rate constants were estimated. Distinct differences between essential (Zn and Cu) and non-essential (Cd and Pb) metals were noted. Larval growth was significantly impaired upon exposure. Finally, long-term exposure experiments with low Cd concentrations (0.010 and 0.025 mg 1–1) resulted initially in growth impairment and high mortality in first instar stages, but surviving larvae restored growth and adults emerged even before control adults. In similar experiments with Zn (0.1 and 1.0 mg 1–1), development of larvae was significantly retarded. High Zn concentrations in larvae were noted and almost no adult midges emerged.  相似文献

1. In a region of south‐eastern England, we investigated the hierarchical genetic structure of populations of two stream‐dwelling caddisflies (Trichoptera: Polycentropodidae) with contrasting distributions: Plectrocnemia conspersa inhabits numerous small, patchily distributed seeps and streams, while the confamilial Polycentropus flavomaculatus is found in fewer but larger streams and rivers. We also contrasted the genetic structure of P. conspersa in the lowland south‐east with that in an upland region in the north west. 2. Microsatellite genotypes were obtained from samples of both species taken from a ‘core area’ and at sites 15, 40 and 100 km from this core (two regions for P. conspersa, totalling 45 sites and 1405 larvae; one region for P. flavomaculatus, totalling 10 sites and 269 larvae). 3. The genetic structure of P. conspersa differed in the two regions. In the upland north‐west, significant genetic differentiation was observed at a spatial scale of around 40 km from the core, while there was no structure in the lowland south‐east up to around 100 km. Areas of high altitude did not appear directly to reduce gene flow, whereas other potential landscape barriers, including particular geological formations, large urban areas and the sea had a pronounced effect. 4. Weak genetic differentiation in P. conspersa across large distances, particularly in the lowland south‐east, suggests that it disperses strongly, facilitating gene flow within and between catchments. Conversely, for P. flavomaculatus we found strong genetic differentiation between almost all sites, suggesting that dispersal is much more limited. 5. Greater dispersal in the patchily distributed P. conspersa than in P. flavomaculatus, which occupies larger and presumably more persistent habitats, could be a general feature of other similarly distributed aquatic insects. While higher relief is potentially a partial barrier to dispersal, P. conspersamust have effective gene flow through such apparently inhospitable terrain, perhaps attributable to dispersal between neighbouring small and ephemeral populations. Indeed, its exploitation of headwaters and seeps requires the ability to disperse between such sites. Apparently it cannot, however, overcome more continuous barriers, consisting of large tracts of landscape with few habitable larval sites. Such landscapes, including those created by humans, may have a stronger effect on population connectivity and colonization in the longer term.  相似文献

Summary The predatory larvae of the caddis Plectrocnemia conspersa (Curtis) cause significant prey depletion in a habitat in which prey are patchily distributed. Optimal foraging theory predicts that under these circumstances a predator should stay in any given patch until the prey capture rate there drops to a value equal to the average for the habitat as a whole. This was tested using a combination of field and laboratory data and the results were in broad agreement with the prediction. A second prediction is that the marginal capture rate should be higher in a habitat richer in prey and this was not supported. It is argued that by using a simple rule-of-thumb (constant giving-up-time) P. conspersa is able to approach the optimal solution for much of the time.  相似文献

The sensitivity of Spodoptera littoralis second and fourth instar larvae to the heavy metals cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) was investigated under laboratory conditions. Both Cd and Pb, even, at very low concentrations, had relatively high toxic effects on S. littoralis larvae. Cd was more toxic to S. littoralis larvae than Pb. In addition, the mean percentage feeding deterrence (FDI%) of Cd and Pb was concentration-dependent. The nutritional indices (consumption index, growth rate, efficiency of converted ingested and digested food, and approximate digestibility) of S. littoralis second and fourth instar larvae were more affected in Cd-treatments compared with those of Pb-treatments. Therefore, the presence of such heavy metals in the environment would exert an adverse impact on S. littoralis larvae and their development.  相似文献

We evaluated the potential of a granular formulation of Metarhizium brunneum F52 containing microsclerotia (MbMSc granules) for control of Aedes aegypti by targeting eggs. MbMSc granules produced infective conidia within 14 days after application to 2.5?g moist potting soil, producing 5.9?×?105, 2.08?×?106 and 6.85?×?106 conidia from 1, 5 and 25?mg MbMSc granules, respectively. Application of MbMSc triggered premature eclosion of eggs (EC50?=?12?mg) with percentages as high as 31?±?2.9% and 67?±?4.3% of the eggs treated with 5 and 25?mg MbMSc granules, respectively, after 14 days on moist filter paper. Premature eclosion of eggs started at 3 days subsequent to MbMSc granule application and survival of larvae was significantly reduced for granule treated eggs (74?±?2.2%, 39?±?2.0% and 23?±?4.9% larvae survived for 1, 5 and 25?mg granule treatments, respectively, EC50?=?4.9?mg). When MbMSc granules were applied in moist potting soil with mosquito eggs, rates of 1, 5 and 25?mg of MbMSc granules significantly reduced adult emergence with only 81?±?2.1%, 47?±?1.9%, and 34?±?2.1% emergence, respectively (EC50?=?7?mg). Eggs treated with increasing concentrations of fungal conidia enhanced premature eclosion of eggs with an EC50?=?1.6?×?106 conidia/mL. Our results demonstrate that MbMSc granules are a promising candidate for control of A. aegypti and that fermentative production of Mb F52 microsclerotia as the active propagule has the potential for use for mosquito control.  相似文献

1. The consumption of microcrustacea by two polyphagous predators, larvae of the caddisfly Plectrocnemia conspersa (Curtis) and the alderfly Sialis fuliginosa Pictet, was investigated in an English stream with a well-known macro- and microinvertebrate fauna. Benthic samples were collected in August, November, December and April, and the gut contents of all individuals of both predators were examined. 2. All the microcrustacean groups (Cyclopoida, Harpacticoida, Chydoridae and Ostracoda) were identified in gut contents. Of the ten taxa present in the benthos, all occurred in the diet of P. conspersa; nine were found in S. fuliginosa. 3. Ontogenetic shifts in the diets of both predators were found, and microcrustacea were consumed more frequently by small than large instars. 4. There was little evidence of selective feeding by P. conspersa, whereas ostracods were over-represented in the diet of S. fuliginosa, compared with benthic relative densities. The Chydoridae were under-represented in the diet of both predators. 5. The food web of Broadstone Stream is perhaps the most detailed web available for any running water habitat. Increased taxonomic resolution produced marked changes in values of connectance and predator-prey ratios. Linkage density remained fairly constant at different levels of resolution and were high, indicative of a web of generalist species. Omnivory was pronounced and may be characteristic of donor-controlled systems where organic detritus is the primary energy base.  相似文献

Abstract Six-day-old larvae of the catarina scallop, Argopecten ventricosus (=circularis), were infected with different concentrations of Vibrio alginolyticus to determine virulence and to describe vibriosis in this species. The development of vibriosis was compared to the effect of the supernatant of a 24-h V. alginolyticus culture. An experimental larvae culture system (ELCS) yielded a maximum survival of 80% from the 6th to the 19th day (control and low concentrations of V. alginolyticus). No effect was shown with concentrations of V. alginolyticus below 0.5 × 105 CFU ml−1. At concentrations higher than 5.0 × 105 CFU ml−1, swimming depletion, empty stomachs, lipidic granules in the digestive system, velum degradation, and massive mortality were observed. The supernatant of V. alginolyticus culture showed similar effects to the highest concentrations of V. alginolyticus cells. Received: 13 November 1996; Accepted 28 March 1997  相似文献

The distribution of recombination nodules (RNs) is reported from observations on two-dimensional spreads of Locusta migratoria and Chloealtis conspersa spermatocytes; C. conspersa is a known example of a species with terminally localized chiasmata, while L. migratoria has nonspecific positioning of chiasmata. Measurements of the distances from 102 RNs to the ends of the synaptonemal complexes (SCs) on which they were found show the RNs to be near-terminally localized in C. conspersa and to occur along the lengths of the SCs in L. migratoria. Thus, the localization of RNs appears to reflect the localization of chiasmata. These observations are interpreted as support for the proposed recombinant function of RNs.  相似文献

Summary The catching-net of P. conspersa larva was studies with particular reference to: structure, building, larval activity inside it and its function in prey catching. The microscopic and macroscopic structure of this catching-net is similar to that Neureclipsis larvae, with an open-ended tunnel and two funnel shaped openings, but its shape is less regular. The building of this net lasts about four to six hours. After a wandering period, the larva first builds the open-ended tunnel and the two openings. Most of the time, the larva lives inside the open-ended tunnel, but it can also crawl into the entrances. Its activity does seem to be related to a diel periodicity.During the catching process, the chief function of the net is detection, after which the prey is taken in the same way as in a spider's web.  相似文献

A phenetic study ofQuercus acutifolia andQ. conspersa (Fagaceae) is carried out. The study was based on morphological characters, and included cluster analysis and principal component analysis. The results revealed that the characters employed so far to separateQuercus acutifolia andQ. conspersa seem to be quite unreliable. Nevertheless, both species can still be recognized as taxonomically different entities, although mostly based on characters of leaf margins. We propose that the individuals that have leaves with dentate-aristate margins correspond toQ. acutifolia, whereas those that have leaves with entire and not dentate-aristate margins belong toQ. conspersa.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 Two species of grasshoppers, Arphia conspersa and Trimerotropis suffusa, coexist in a montane habitat in central Colorado.
  • 2 Field-recordings of body temperature revealed that A.conspersa has a significantly lower mean body temperature (Tb), sexual display temperature (Td) and minimum flying temperature (MFT) than T.suffusa.
  • 3 A test of the maximum voluntarily tolerated temperature (MVT) showed that T.suffusa has a higher MVT than A.conspersa.
  • 4 Thermal niche breadth, as indexed by the difference between MVT and MFT and the range of environmental temperatures over which each species is active, is broader in the eurythermic A.conspersa than in the stenothermic T. suffusa.
  • 5 Thermoregulatory ability, as evaluated by regression analysis of Tb on Ta, was shown to be better in T.suffusa than in A.conspersa and in displaying grasshoppers of both species than in non-displaying ones. The significance of these findings with respect to a cost-benefit model of behavioural thermoregulation in ectotherms is discussed.
  • 6 Based on these data and observations it was concluded that A.conspersa and T.suffusa occupy different thermal niches and that thermal considerations may be importantly related to habitat preference, daily activity patterns, and consequent ecological separation.

The cerebrally innervated eyes of the veliger larvae of Smaragdia sp. and Strombus sp. are composed of a lens, a cornea, and an everse retina. The retina contains two different types of cells, ciliary sensory cells and supportive cells which bear one or two cilia. It is suggested that: (a) the ciliary photoreceptors of these teleplanic veliger larvae are correlated with a long pelagic life in the ocean, which can last up to twelve months, and (b) that structural details of the photoreceptors can change during ontogenesis (ciliary vs rhabdomeric). Furthermore, the cilia of the supportive cells apparently tranport lens material and thus play an important role in lens formation. Spatio-temporal distributions of Chironomus crassicaudatus, Chironomus decorus, Glyptotendipes paripes, Cryptochironomus fulvus and Tanypodinae midge larvae and selected associated environmental variables (physico-chemical variables of water, sediment chemistry and algal composition) were studied for one year in natural Lake Monroe and man-made Konomac Lake in central Florida. Ordination analysis (CCA with variation partitioning) showed that in each lake, sediment variables were the most important environmental variables. However, the most important proportion of species variability in pooled data from both lakes was explained by lake-specific combinations of water, sediment and algal variables. Chironomid larvae were ordinated with increasing depth as follows: G. paripes, C. fulvus, C. crassicaudatus, Tanypodinae, and C. decorus. This trend was similar for both lakes individually as well as for the pooled data. As water depth increased, organic matter content and associated metals concentrations in sediment increased. Glyptotendipes paripes displayed significant, negative correlation with water depth and sediment total carbon content, while C. decorus showed a significant positive correlation with these variables; C. crassicaudatus did not show any significant correlation with either of these variables. The algal composition in the pooled data from both lakes was another important factor affecting the larval distributions. The proportion of G. paripes and C. decorus larvae increased with filamentous algal density, and C. crassicaudatus larvae with increasing Cyanobacteria. Although both study lakes were very shallow, the effect of water depth (alone or shared with environmental variables) on chironomid larval community composition was substantially higher than the seasonality (sampling month) effect.  相似文献

Sediment bioassays with larvae of the midge, Chironomus tentans, were used to evaluate influences on the bioavailability and toxicity of copper (Cu) in sediments with a wide range of concentrations of metals, acid-volatile sulfide (AVS), and other physicochemical characteristics. Sediments were collected from sixteen lakes in Michigan, USA, and from twelve sites in the Clark Fork River drainage of Montana, USA, which are contaminated with metals from mining activities and from other anthropogenic sources. Bioassays with C. tentans larvae were conducted for ten days in a static-renewal test system, with endpoints of survival, growth, and metal bioaccumulation. Bioaccumulation of copper (Cu) was strongly correlated with Cu concentrations in porewater, and was increased significantly at Cu concentrations less than those affecting growth or survival. Midge survival and growth were not significantly correlated with concentrations of Cu in sediment or porewater, and were poorly predicted by ratios of acid-extractable metals to AVS in sediments. Principal components analysis indicated that Cu concentrations in porewater and bioaccumulation of Cu by midge larvae were influenced by AVS, sediment organic carbon, and porewater pH, and that toxicity was associated with high concentrations of Cu, high concentrations of zinc (Zn) and ammonia. No toxicity was observed in several sediments which contained low concentrations of AVS and high concentrations of Cu and Zn. In sediments which contain little AVS, bioavailability of metals may be controlled by constituents other than sulfides, such as organic matter and metal hydrous oxides. These results indicate that assessments of toxicity in metal-contaminated sediments should evaluate the importance of metal-binding phases other than sulfides, and the possible contributions of ammonia or other toxicants to toxicity in sediment bioassays. The U.S. Government right to retain a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence in and to any copyright is acknowledged.  相似文献

1 Granulovirus PoGV is a strong candidate to substitute for chemical insecticides in integrated pest management (IPM) of the potato tuber moth Phthorimaea operculella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Generally, susceptibility to baculoviruses decreases with increasing larval age. For effective field applications, knowledge of the age‐related change in susceptibility is crucial. 2 The relative susceptibility of various instars of P. operculella larvae to PoGV was studied by leaf‐disc bioassays in the laboratory at 26 °C incubation temperature. The LC50 increased from 4 × 106 granules/mL for neonate larvae to 1.2 × 107, 1.1 × 108, 4.4 × 108, and 4.2 × 109 granules/mL, signifying resistance ratios of 3, 29, 110, and 1051, for 5, 6, 7, and 9‐day‐old larvae, respectively. 3 The relationship between log‐LC50 values and log‐larval weight was significantly linear. A logistic function described significantly the relation between larval weights and physiological age measured in degree‐days (DD > 13.4 °C). Both functions allowed prediction of the activity ratio of PoGV for different larval ages by using temperature summation to express physiological age. 4 PoGV was found to be highly active against P. operculella larvae up to a physiological age of approximately 50 DD (>13.4 °C) (i.e. the first third of the total larval development time). Thereafter, the virus rapidly lost its activity against older larvae. Prospects for applying this knowledge in the field are discussed.  相似文献

The phenomenon that epidermal cells under the white stripes rather than black stripes contain many uric acid granules was found in larvae of several Lepidopteran species. However, the biological mechanism of this phenomenon is still unknown. In the present study, we take advantage of several silkworm (Bombyx mori) body color mutant strains to investigate the deposition patterns and biological mechanism of urate and melanin in the integuments of these mutant larvae. By imaging with transmission electron microscope, we found that there were some melanin granules in the larval cuticle in black body color mutant plain Black (pB), but not in background strain plain (p) with white larval body color. In contrast, the larval epidermal cell of background strain had much more urate granules than that of black one. Furthermore, the uric acid content under the black stripes was significantly lower than that under the white stripes in a single individual of mottled stripe (pS) with black and white stripes in each segment. Ultraviolet A (UVA) exposure experiments showed that the distinct oily (od) mutant individuals with translucent larval integument were more sensitive to the UVA damage than black body color mutant and background strain without any pigmentation in the larval cuticle. This is likely due to the absence of melanin granules and few urate granules in the integument of od mutant. Thus, both the deposited melanin granules in the cuticle and the abundant urate granules in the epidermis cells constitute effective barriers for the silkworm to resist UVA‐induced damage.  相似文献

Biosorption is the process of removal of any chemical molecules by the treatment of biological material. Industrialization resulted in the discharge of various toxic heavy metals into water bodies, which poses serious health hazards to humans and animals. In the present study, live Spirulina platensis was used as a biosorbent for the removal of the heavy metals chromium (Cr(VI)) and lead (Pb(II)) from the aqueous samples. S. platensis were cultured in the presence of different concentrations of heavy metals. The growth of the algal cells was found to be decreased by 59% and 36% in media containing 50 ppm Cr(VI) and Pb(II), respectively. To assess the biosorption of heavy metals, at different time intervals, the spent culture media were used to detect Cr(VI) by atomic absorption spectroscopy method and Pb(II) by 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol indicator method. Results suggested that there was a significant uptake of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) from the medium by S. platensis, with corresponding decrease of metals in the medium. When metal salt solutions or industrial effluent samples were passed through the column containing immobilized live S. platensis in calcium alginate beads, the concentration of Cr(VI) was found to be reduced drastically. The present study indicates the application of S. platensis for the bioremediation of heavy metals from the samples obtained from industrial effluents.  相似文献

Summary In five diplopod species from three families collected from locations with different soil metal contents, the following parameters were examined: the litter mass (and energy) ingested per day, the mass (and energy) assimilation rates, and the litter mass (and energy) assimilated per day, when the diplopods were fed (1) uncontaminated and (2) artificially lead-enriched leaf litter. These parameters were compared between species and between animals from different sites. The mass and energy assimilation efficiencies depend on (1) the size of the species and (2) the collection site of the animals. Relative mass (and in three of the species examined also energy) assimilation was highest in those animals collected from the less contaminated sites. With artificial diets, specimens from a site with soil contaminated by heavy metals showed greater assimilation of both mass and energy than originally unaffected specimens. One species (Glomeris conspersa) was able to compensate for the low assimilation rate by increased consumption, and thus guarantee a sufficient energy supply. One of the other species (Polydesmus denticulatus), however, did not show this compensation. Animals of this species from less contaminated sites showed a very low absolute energy assimilation rate and high mortality under lead treatment.  相似文献

Scaling the effects of predation and disturbance in a patchy environment   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Jill Lancaster 《Oecologia》1996,107(3):321-331
The effects of hydraulic disturbances on the impact of two predatory benthic invertebrates on their prey were examined in a stream at two distinct spatial scales. At the scale of small habitat patches (0.0625 m2), hydraulic patch type was an important determinant of the microdistribution of prey and predators. Prey abundances were similar across all patch types at baseflow, but local densities were higher in patches identified as low-flow refugia after periods of high and fluctuating flow. The microdistribution pattern of predatory larvae of a caddisfly, Plectrocnemia conspersa, was similar to that of its prey, whereas predatory larvae of an alderfly, Sialis fuliginosa, did not shift their microdistribution significantly with discharge and were always most abundant in lowflow refugia. There was little evidence of an aggregative response of predators with prey, even though both predators and prey are mobile. Both predator species showed similar patch-specific patterns of per capita consumption rates: uniform consumption rates across hydraulic patch types at low and moderate flows, but highest in flow refugia during high flows. Species-specific patterns, however, were apparent in the magnitude and direction of differences between consumption rates during disturbance events, and in comparable patches at base flow: At high flow, consumption rates for P. conspersa were exaggerated (3.9 times higher) in flow refugia but at par in other patches; for S. fuliginosa they were at par in flow refugia but reduced in other patches (up to 3.3. times lower). These differences may be related to species-specific foraging behaviours (search vs ambush predators) and the influence of prey movements on feeding success. Using the patch-scale results only, it is difficult to predict the effects of physical disturbance on predation intensity at the larger scales of whole habitats, populations or communities. At the large scale (>200 m2), net predator impacts were estimated over the stream reach, using a spatially explicit model that accounts, in an additive way, for habitat heterogeneity and patch-specific responses of predators and prey. The relationship between predator impact over the whole reach and hydraulic disturbance differed for the two predators. The predator impact of S. fuliginosa decreased with increasing hydraulic disturbance, as predicted by the harsh-benign hypothesis. There was no directional trend for P. conspersa, however, and maximum predator impact may occur at intermediate disturbance levels. For the prey community in this stream, predation pressure from S. fuliginosa appears to fluctuate directly with the discharge hydrograph, whereas predation from P. conspersa may be more persistent. Flow refugia may play a dual role in the sructure of stream communities by preventing catastrophic mortality of animals (predators and prey) from physical forces during disturbances, and by maintaining (or perhaps increasing) predation pressure. Summing the effects of species interactions in small habitat patches to the larger scale of a whole stream reach indicates that the scale of approach influences the observed patterns and their implied underlying process.  相似文献
