To investigate the covariation of adult body condition and nestling growth, we weighed adult Brünnich's Guillemots Uria lomvia rearing chicks at Coats Island, Nunavut, Canada, each year between 1988 and 2002. We estimated chick mass at 14 days for a sample of chicks reared in the same years. Adult mass and chick mass at 14 days were highly correlated, suggesting that, as feeding conditions deteriorate, adults compromise by reducing their own body reserves, while at the same time delivering less food to their offspring. We compared the prediction of the least-squares regression for the Coats Island data with observations made at Digges Island, a much larger colony about 300 km away, where birds are similar in linear body measurements to those at Coats Island and have a similar body mass while incubating. Adult mass at Digges Island averaged 11% less during chick-rearing than during incubation, compared with only a 5% difference at Coats Island. Mean chick mass at 14 days at Digges Island was lower in all years than was observed for chicks at Coats Island in any year. The observed 14-day chick masses at Digges Island in two years were close to values predicted by adult mass and somewhat lower in two other years (those when chick growth was slowest). At Digges Island, the distribution of mass for brooding adults was right skewed and suggested a lower threshold at 800–850 g, below which Brünnich's Guillemots terminate breeding. We conclude that the correlation between adult and chick mass represents a dynamic equilibrium in which adults simultaneously adjust their own energy reserves and their delivery rate to the chick. This compromise must be based on behavioural choices made by individual birds and is unlikely to be a passive consequence of fluctuating conditions.  相似文献

Brünnich's Guillemots Uria lomvia are adapted to high-density breeding in large colonies on steep cliffs. Because they breed on narrow ledges, egg loss through dislodgement is an important cause of breeding failure. Fighting among breeders presumably raises the risk of accidental dislodgement. In this study, we investigated whether social behaviour among Brünnich's Guillemots shows any adaptations to reduce accidental egg loss by modifying behaviour during incubation. We found that the amount of aggression increased significantly at the time of hatching, perhaps in response to the reduced risk of breeding failure through dislodgement of a chick, compared with an egg. Allopreening followed an inverse trend, falling significantly after the day of hatch. This supports the hypothesis that allopreening is used to reduce aggressive interactions. At the same time, the frequency of allopreening was greatly increased on days when mosquitoes affected the birds, consistent with the hypothesis that allopreening is part of a defence strategy against ectoparasites.  相似文献

In many species of bird, eggs laid late in the laying period hatch after a shorter incubation period than do eggs laid early. These seasonal declines in incubation period are generally thought to confer evolutionary advantages, but the proximate mechanisms that underlie them are poorly understood. Seasonal declines in incubation period are usually attributed to: (1) seasonal increases in ambient air temperatures; (2) seasonal changes in the behaviour of incubating birds; and/or (3) seasonal declines in egg size. In a previous study, Common Guillemot Una aalge incubation periods declined with laying date at a low-Arctic colony. As there was no support for hypotheses 1 or 2, it was suggested that this occurred because egg size declined with laying date, but eggs were not measured in that study. We recorded similar seasonal declines in the incubation periods of the single eggs laid by Brünnich's Guillemots Una lomvia at two low-Arctic colonies in four years. Neither seasonal variation in ambient air temperatures, nor in the behaviour of incubating adults, appeared to cause the declines. As predicted for Common Guillemots, incubation period increased with egg size among Briinnich's Guillemots, in one of two years. However, incubation period declined with laying date in the absence of corresponding declines in egg size. We conclude that none of the three commonly proposed proximate mechanisms adequately explains the seasonal variation in guillemot incubation periods. In several groups in the order Charadriformes, biparental care is followed by a period of male‐only care. Several hypotheses attempting to explain extended male parental care in shorebirds do not fit the Alcini. In a previous study of Brünnich’s Guillemots Uria lomvia and Razorbills Alca torda, we did not find support for female‐biased parental effort at the breeding site that would lead to males being in better condition to care for chicks at sea. However, in both species, males spent more off‐duty time at the breeding site than females, suggesting greater involvement in the defence of egg or chick, breeding site and mate. We predicted that there would be a male bias in size and aggressive behaviour associated with parental roles. To test this, body size and aggression of attending male and female Brünnich’s Guillemots and Razorbills were measured during incubation and brooding on the Gannet Islands, Labrador. Parental aggression was measured using natural observations of all agonistic interactions and, in Razorbills only, in situ responses to presentations of a predator model. In both species, males were significantly larger than females in culmen and gape length. Guillemot males initiated agonistic interactions more frequently than females during incubation. In contrast, female Guillemots were subjected to aggression more frequently than males and as a result were involved in more fights. In addition, the few chicks that were seen to die were being attended by single females. During the brooding period, Razorbill males responded aggressively to intruders more frequently than females, made more aggressive responses than females, and responded aggressively more frequently and more intensely than females to a predator model. In both species there was a similar male bias in morphology and behaviour that is consistent with male parents being more capable of protecting their chick, a probable advantage to chick survival during the uniparental care phase of some Charadriformes.  相似文献

Body mass of Brünnich's guillemots Uria lomvia breeding at Coats Island, Canada, was measured during incubation and chick-rearing in 1988–2001. In most years, mass increased during incubation and fell after hatching, leveling off by the time chicks were 18 d old, close to the age at which chicks departed. Mass during incubation increased with age up to about 12 yr, but the mass of birds brooding chicks was not related to age. The trend towards increasing mass during incubation was mainly a consequence of mass increases of young breeders as older birds maintained a constant mass. The variation in adult mass with age during incubation seems likely to reflect age-related variation in foraging ability, but the loss of mass after hatching, being greater for older birds, appears best explained as a response to the demands of provisioning chicks, with older birds transferring their accumulated reserves to their chicks via higher provisioning rates.  相似文献

Although theoretical models predict that the quality of foraging patches has little effect on optimal dive time with increasing depth, many empirical studies show that dive time at a given depth may vary. We developed a model that incorporated patch quality as a parameter of energy intake as a nonlinear function of time, and applied it to the diving behaviour of Brünnich's guillemots, Uria lomvia. The model indicated that optimal dive time can vary widely depending on the parameter. It also explained the convergence of observed dive times with travel time. Assuming the birds dived optimally, this parameter can be estimated from travel time and dive time for each dive. Foraging patches with larger estimated parameter values were favoured by the birds, suggesting that the parameter indicated patch quality. We used this parameter to test an optimal patch use model in divers. The results indicate that Brünnich's guillemots adjust their diving behaviour adaptively depending on patch quality, and that the optimal diving model is valid for prediction of observed dive patterns if patch quality is incorporated appropriately. The laying of smaller replacement eggs has been described as a time-saving adaptation because chicks generally grow faster once hatched than inside the egg. However, chicks hatched from smaller eggs have, potentially, lower survival. Consequently, the smaller replacement egg represents a benefit to the female in terms of preserving its own condition at a cost to their offspring. We test these ideas by measuring adult mass changes and plasma lipid concentration changes in male and female Brünnich's guillemots Uria lomvia breeding on Coats Island, Nunavut. Though males lost more mass than females, these differences were not significant. Between laying the first and replacement egg, plasma fatty acid concentrations declined in females and increased in males, suggesting that females mobilise less lipid to preserve their condition after laying the replacement egg. In females, plasma lipid concentrations of the dominant fatty acids found in the eggs (16:0 and 18:1) declined between the laying of first and replacement eggs while plasma concentrations of 20:1 increased in both males and females. We compared the fatty acid signatures of first and replacement egg to look for evidence of differences between the lipid sources for their production. Principal component and discriminant function analyses showed that the fatty acid signatures of replacement eggs were closer to the signatures of the local prey than those of first eggs. We suggest that females rely on local sources of energy to a greater degree for the production of the replacement egg than the first egg, but that endogenous reserves of certain nutrients are important for the production of both eggs.  相似文献

We recorded body temperatures in four runners, two squash players and one swimmer at 1-min intervals using miniature data loggers. These single-channel loggers are small and light (25 g), and were easily carried by the athletes during their sporting activities. Wide-range loggers (-37 degrees C to +46 degrees C), which had a temperature resolution of 0.4 degrees C, were used to measure thigh skin temperature. Auditory canal temperature and rectal temperature were measured with narrow-range loggers (+34 degrees C to + 46 degrees C) which had a considerably higher resolution (0.04 degrees C). With the aid of visual analogue scales subjects reported that the thermometric equipment caused very little discomfort or impairment of exercise performance. Loggers connected to uncoated bead thermistors (used for skin and auditory canal temperatures) had a thermal time constant of 0.4 s, and that of the coated thermistors (rectal probes) was 6 s. We were able to waterproof the equipment and measure rectal temperature in a swimmer. Hot (35 degrees C) or cold (5 degrees C) ambient temperatures had an insignificant effect on the intrinsic accuracy of the data loggers, even when used without recalibration at those temperatures. We believe that miniature temperature loggers are convenient and accurate thermometers for use during sporting activities and may provide new insights into thermoregulation during exercise.  相似文献

We have investigated the use of miniature temperature data loggers for the recording of abdominal temperature in laboratory animals, using the guinea pig as a model. The data loggers, which are small (16cm(3)), light (20g) and have a battery life of +/-5 years, recorded both the normal abdominal temperature of guinea pigs, and their febrile response to an intramuscular injection of 50μg/kg lipopolysaccharide (E. coli) every 5min for the duration of the experiment (21 days), to a resolution of at least 0.05 degrees C. No calibration shifts or loss of data occurred during the study period. However, despite their small size and versatility, we found that the loggers were suited for use only in guinea pigs with a body mass of approximately 600g or greater. In smaller animals, the loggers caused peritonitis.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Accurate determination of nest fates and nest predators is possible through continuous video monitoring, but such monitoring is relatively expensive and labor intensive. If documenting of the timing of nest termination events is sufficient, then data loggers (DL) may allow more extensive sampling and may represent a viable alternative. I validated temperature DL records of nest survival time by simultaneous videotaping and compared results derived from DL records with those obtained by regular nest visits by an observer. I estimated the fate of 937 nests of nine species of open cup-nesting songbirds, including 673 nests monitored using DL, 165 monitored using video cameras, 33 validation nests monitored simultaneously using both DL and video cameras, and 132 control nests monitored only by observer visits. Deployment of DL did not negatively influence nest survival rate. DL reliably recorded survival time and allowed classification of nest fates based on the potential fledging age, regardless of the frequency of nest visits by an observer. The true fate of nests that survived beyond the potential fledging age can not be safely determined from time of failure, except for nocturnal events that suggest partial predation. Video revealed frequent partial or complete predation on nests with old nestlings that would have been categorized as successful by other methods. I conclude that temperature DL are efficient, reliable, and relatively inexpensive tools for recording exact nest survival times and classification of nest fates, with implications for nest survival modeling and discriminating between diurnal and nocturnal predation.  相似文献

Seawater temperature was recorded at two-hourly intervals for two years (March 2006-March 2008) by six data loggers in Diego Garcia atoll, central Indian Ocean. Loggers were substrate mounted, in two transects of 5, 15 and 25 m depth on a seaward reef and in a lagoonal pass. During the season of mixed but predominantly northwest winds, regular plunges of temperature of 5–7°C occurred with a periodicity of 1–4 days. This partly coincided with the period of greatest annual warming. Temperature fluctuations increased with increasing depth. Temperature traces are compared with HadISST1 and AVHRR satellite-derived temperature data which do not capture the deeper water temperature plunges. Reasons for the regular temperature plunges appear to include both tidal cycles and unidentified, internal waves. This is important for issues of coral refuges, complicating use of satellite-derived temperature data for planning optimal coral reef conservation areas.  相似文献

Incubation is a crucial aspect of avian parental care and measuring incubation temperature in the wild can improve our understanding of life history tradeoffs and inform conservation efforts. However, there are challenges associated with measuring the temperature of eggs in natural nests. Most studies to date have measured incubation temperature by using a single, stationary logger in each nest. However, real eggs are rotated and moved throughout the nest by the parent during the incubation period, and thus, a stationary logger may not accurately represent the temperature experienced by individual eggs within the entire clutch. We recorded incubation temperature in nests by using multiple, mobile artificial egg temperature loggers. We installed six mobile loggers and one stationary logger in wood duck Aix sponsa nests to compare the two logger types in the field. We found that at a given ambient temperature, mobile loggers recorded lower average and more variable temperatures than stationary loggers. Further, temperatures recorded by stationary loggers showed no relationship with clutch size, while mobile loggers captured temperatures that were lower and more variable as clutch size increased. Also, the multiple mobile loggers revealed that eggs within a nest experienced a substantial range of temperatures throughout the incubation period. We discuss potential limitations of this method, but believe that it is a promising way to collect biologically‐relevant incubation temperature data and provides an opportunity to advance our understanding of incubation temperature as a parental effect.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The nocturnal activity of burrow‐nesting seabirds, such as storm‐petrels and shearwaters, makes it difficult to study their incubation behavior. In particular, little is known about possible differences in the incubation behavior of adults at successful and unsuccessful nests. We combined the use of passive integrated transponder (PIT) technology and nest‐temperature data loggers to monitor the incubation behavior of 10 pairs of Leach's Storm‐Petrels (Oceanodroma leucorhoa). The mean incubation bout length was 3.31 ± 0.59 (SD) days for individual adults at successful nests (N= 4) and 1.84 ± 1.16 d for individuals at unsuccessful nests (N= 6). Mean bout length for pairs in successful burrows (3.51 ± 0.56 d) did not differ significantly (P= 0.07) from that for pairs in unsuccessful burrows (1.80 ± 1.20 d), perhaps due to one failed nest with a high mean bout length (4.15 d). The total number of incubation bouts per parent (4.3 ± 1.9 bouts) did not differ with hatching success. Adults whose nests failed repeatedly exhibited truncated incubation bouts (< 12 h) prior to complete nest failure and were more likely than successful parents to make brief visits to nearby, occupied nesting burrows. Our results suggest that the decision by Leach's Storm‐Petrels to abandon a nest is not an abrupt one. Rather, failed nesting attempts may be characterized by truncated incubation bouts where individuals pay the energetic cost of travel to and from the burrow, but do not remain long enough to successfully incubate the egg.  相似文献

1. Time-depth data recorders (TDRs) have been widely used to explore the behaviour of relatively large, deep divers. However, little is known about the dive behaviour of small, shallow divers such as semi-aquatic mammals. 2. We used high-resolution TDRs to record the diving behaviour of American mink Mustela vison (weight of individuals 580-1275 g) in rivers in Oxfordshire (UK) between December 2005 and March 2006. 3. Dives to > 0.2 m were measured in all individuals (n = 6). Modal dive depth and duration were 0.3 m and 10 s, respectively, although dives up to 3 m and 60 s in duration were recorded. Dive duration increased with dive depth. 4. Temperature data recorded by TDRs covaried with diving behaviour: they were relatively cold (modal temperature 4-6 degrees C across individuals) when mink were diving and relatively warm (modal temperature 24-36 degrees C across individuals) when mink were not diving. 5. Individuals differed hugely in their use of rivers, reflecting foraging plasticity across both terrestrial and aquatic environments. For some individuals there was < 1 dive per day while for others there was > 100 dives per day. 6. We have shown it is now possible to record the diving behaviour of small free-living animals that only dive a few tens of centimetres, opening up the way for a new range of TDR studies on shallow diving species.  相似文献
