The hairpencils of the Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, are tufts of modified scales between the seventh and eighth abdominal segments of the adult males. The fine structure and development of a hairpencil organule is described. A process of the trichogen cell secretes the modified scale and then withdraws, and the cell invaginates forming a microvillous lumen into which pheromone is probably secreted. This lumen communicates with the outside via rows of pores in the hollow scale. The opening of these pores when the moth emerges from the pupal cuticle may be a result of the drying out of the membrane that covered them. The socket of the hairpencil scale is secreted by a tormogen cell.
The hairpencils of male Lepidoptera differ in position from family to family, but the organules that compose them seem to share a common structure. Epidermal glands and organules are classified in a scheme that takes account of their mode of development.  相似文献

Each vas deferens of the Mediterranean flour moth, Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller), consists of a short swollen portion immediately below the testis, another swollen portion that forms a seminal vesicle, and an elongate lower portion that empties into one arm of the ductus ejaculatoris duplex. Three types of epithelial cells occur sequentially. Phagocytic cells that engulf debris from the testis form the anterior two-thirds of the first swollen portion. Tall secretory cells form the distal third of the first swollen region and extend to the seminal vesicles. The secretory cells surround a slit-like lumen and appear to function as a valve between the two swollen regions. Many membrane-enclosed secretory granules are stored at the apical ends of the cells and are released into the lumen together with small amounts of the surrounding cytoplasm. The granules remain intact while they are in the male tract. A second type of secretory cell forms the walls of the seminal vesicles and the lower vasa deferentia. These cells produce secretory granules whose contents become dispersed through the semen. PTA-chromic acid staining indicates that the seminal plasma has a high glycoprotein content. A thin muscle layer is basal to the epithelial cells. Both apyrene and eupyrene sperm undergo some development in the vasa deferentia. The epithelial cells, muscle, and stored sperm all undergo extensive changes with age.  相似文献

Five regions are recognized in the accessory glands of the Mediterranean flour moth, Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller), on the basis of cellular morphology and aggregates of secretory material in the lumen. Some variation is found in each of the posterior four regions, especially the third one. In the most anterior region (region 1) the epithelium is composed of a single type of cell, while in each of the other regions there are two classes of cells. The cells of region 1 and one class in each of the other four regions are fairly typical exocrine cells with extensive rough endoplasmic reticula. Secretion is primarily via Golgi-derived vesicles. Apocrine secretion in the form of sloughing off of the apical cytoplasm probably also occurs in all regions but is most prominent in the posterior two regions. One class of cells is very similar in morphology in each of the posterior four regions though their secretory products form characteristic aggregates in the lumen. The second class of cells (foliate cells) occurring in the posterior four segments is most notably characterized by elongate apical projections that extend out into the lumen. The apical projections contain large quantities of glycogen, some microtubules, and, in some cases, many minute mitochondria. The membrane content of the projections is also very high. In the anterior regions, the membranes are mostly fused in pairs and typically form multilayered whorls. Fusion and whorl formation decrease in the posterior regions. The cytoplasm of the foliate cells has a high organelle content including many lysosomes and mitochondria. The latter exhibit considerable polymorphism, with particular forms occurring in the different regions of the glands. The apical projections of the foliate cells are detached during copulation, presumably as the result of nervous stimulation, and become a part of the ejaculate. Replenishment of all secretory material, including the apical projections, occurs after copulation.  相似文献

Extracts of confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum) volatiles were separated into their components by gas chromatography and identified by mass spectroscopy as 1-pentadecene, n-hexadecane, 1-heptadecene, and heptadecadiene, the last three reported for the first time in this species. The first three of these compounds were tested and found to induce copulation. The pheromones are produced in males and females but appear to affect males only.  相似文献

The effects of eight diets (atta flour, wheat flour, self-rising flour, rice flour, custard powder, corn flour, tapioca starch, and potato starch) on the development of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), reared at 29-31 degrees C and 66-70% RH were assessed. Five pairs of male and female T. castaneum were reared on the respective diets for 28 d before the experimental setup was dismantled and adult counts were recorded. In another experiment, the insects were allowed to mate and oviposit in each flour or starch type over a period of 7 d before being removed. The counting of pupae and adult emergence began on the day of emergence and was continued on a daily basis until day 140. Proximate analysis was performed for chemical composition of each diet, and the numbers of new adults that developed were found to be positively correlated (r2 = 0.97; P < 0.05) with the protein content and negatively correlated (r2 = 0.93; P < 0.05) with the carbohydrate content. For T. castaneum, the suitable diets were ranked as follows: atta flour > wheat flour > self-rising flour > rice flour > custard powder > corn flour > tapioca starch > potato starch. T. castaneum larval development to the pupal and adult stages developed significantly faster in atta flour (P < 0.05) than in the other diets, and the greatest number of progeny was produced from beetles reared on atta flour. Fewer adults emerged from wheat flour, self-rising flour, and rice flour, and no new emergences were recorded for the remaining diets. Developmental rate was much slower in beetles reared on diets in which a low number in progeny was produced. These data illustrate that different diets can influence the sustainability of these insects and affect their development and growth.  相似文献

Life tables were constructed to assess the relative importance of some factors causing mortality of Tribolium confusum and to gauge their response to increasing population density. Observations focussed on three population densities (100, 400 and 800 individual/8 g medium) from the egg to the adult stage. The medium was not renewed in order to maximize predatory interactions. Generation mortality at densities 100, 400 and 800 was 42%, 50% and 74% respectively, i. e. density-dependent. Mortality in the first 10 days was also density-dependent reaching a maximum of 27% at density 800: predation by small larvae on eggs seemed the principal causative factor. The overall pattern of larval mortality was density-independent. Data on the mortality of pupae and callows were ultimately consistent with an inversely density-dependent pattern. Apparently, only mortality occurring within the first 10 days was capable of population regulation.  相似文献

Forty species of fungi were recovered from the indoor air of flour mills by exposing petri plates containing potato dextrose, czapek-dox, and sabouraud agar media for 5 minutes. A rotorod sampler was used. The fungal flora of the nearby outdoor environment was also studied for comparison. Species of genus Aspergillus dominated in the mills, being represented by 16 species including one ascosporic species. Other species were of genera Cladosporium and Fusarium. Variations in the fungal population in different months of the survey year were also observed.

Identifiable fungal spores recovered using the rotorod sampler were Alternaria (17% occurrence), Curvularia lunata (10.6%), C. letramera (10%), Cladosporium (19%), Drechslera sp. (9%), Epicoccum sp. (5%), Pithomyces sp. (3%), Nigrospora sp. (10.5%), Stemphylium sp. (4.5%) and Torula sp. (4.5%). Mycelial fragments and unidentifiable spores were also seen in abundance.

Varying allergic responses of patients tested intradermally for the antigens of six Aspergilli, viz., Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. melleus, A. niger, A. niveus, and A. terreus were also recorded.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare the nutritional value of three diets with rats submitted to protein malnutrition. After one month on a low protein diet (2% casein), the rats were refed with corn-soya-milk (60%/30%/5%, W/W/W) and rice-cotton-milk (60%/30%/5%) diets. This produced a higher growth rate than either the corn-cotton milk (60%/30%/5%) diets or a control diet containing 20% casein. The caloric intake/100 g body weight was about the same with the four rehabilitation diets. The highest apparent nitrogen digestive utilization coefficients (C. U. D.) values were obtained with the control diet, lower values with the rice-cotton-milk diet, then the corn-cotton-milk diet and lowest with the corn-soya-milk diet. Results of lipid C. U. D. were in the same order. The highest nitrogen balances were obtained with the control diet, then the corn-soya-milk diet, the rice-cotton-milk diet and lowest values with the corn-cotton-milk diet. Our data prove that the cotton flour mixed with rice may perfectly replace soya flour associated with corn in a nutritional rehabilitation diet.  相似文献
