Serratia marcescens swarms at 30 degrees C but not at 37 degrees C on a nutrient-rich (LB) agar surface. Mini-Tn5 mutagenesis of S. marcescens CH-1 yielded a mutant (WC100) that swarms not only vigorously at 37 degrees C but also earlier and faster than the parent strain swarms at 30 degrees C. Analysis of this mutant revealed that the transposon was inserted into a gene (rssA) predicted to encode a bacterial two-component signal transduction sensor kinase, upstream of which a potential response regulator gene (rssB) was located. rssA and rssB insertion-deletion mutants were constructed through homologous recombination, and the two mutants exhibited similar swarming phenotypes on LB swarming agar, in which swarming not only occurred at 37 degrees C but also initiated at a lower cell density, on a surface with a higher agar concentration, and more rapidly than the swarming of the parent strain at 30 degrees C. Both mutants also exhibited increased hemolysin activity and altered cell surface topologies compared with the parent CH-1 strain. Temperature and certain saturated fatty acids (SFAs) were found to negatively regulate S. marcescens swarming via the action of RssA-RssB. Analysis of the fatty acid profiles of the parent and the rssA and rssB mutants grown at 30 degrees C or 37 degrees C and under different nutrition conditions revealed a relationship between cellular fatty acid composition and swarming phenotypes. The cellular fatty acid profile was also observed to be affected by RssA and RssB. SFA-dependent inhibition of swarming was also observed in Proteus mirabilis, suggesting that either SFAs per se or the modulation of cellular fatty acid composition and hence homeostasis of membrane fluidity may be a conserved mechanism for regulating swarming motility in gram-negative bacteria.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. 1. The effects of colony size and time of reproduction on the survival and size of offspring colonies and on drone production were examined for honey bees, Apis mellifera L. Drone and worker production and survival of parental and offspring colonies were monitored following swarming. Also, the temporal patterns of drone emergence and availability of unmated queens were examined.
2. Colony size at swarming was positively correlated with the number of workers invested in offspring colonies and the number of queens produced. However, colony size at swarming was not correlated with the number of offspring colonies produced.
3. Swarm size was positively correlated with drone and worker production after swarms were hived. Worker production of hived swarms was positively correlated with colony survival. Offspring queens which inherited a parental nest survived longer than queens in either primary swarms or afterswarms, presumably due to the advantage of inheriting a nest.
4. Drone emergence peaked just prior to swarming, the time when unmated queens were available. High drone production by colonies initiated by swarms probably reflected an attempt to reproduce prior to winter. The probabilities of a second swarming cycle within the same year and of surviving the winter were low for colonies initiated from swarms.  相似文献

Food selection and growth of young snakehead Channa striatus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Food selection and growth of young snakehead Channa striatus were studied in the laboratory and in a field trial. In the laboratory, first-feeding snakehead larvae of 6–7 mm total length (TL) with a mouth opening of 0.55 mm selected for Artemia nauplii, and against formulated feed. Fish began feeding on formulated feed at 12mm TL when their mouth width reached 1.0mm. In both laboratory and field trials, snakehead diets changed as fish size increased. For fish 15–20 mm TL, cladocerans and copepods were 96.5% of their diet. With fish 30–40 mm TL, zooplankton consumption was greatly reduced while benthic organism consumption increased. Fish 45–50 mm TL fed exclusively on benthic invertebrates. Diet shift from zoo-plankton to benthic invertebrates was not due to reduced zoo-plankton availability, but was instead related to changes in gill raker structure. Low density of benthic invertebrates in the field trial caused reduced fish growth rates when fish switched diets from zooplankton to benthos. Our results indicate that snake-head can take Artemia nauplii as a larval starter food, then accept formulated feed at ≥12 mm TL. Zooplankton can serve as food for snakehead < 40 mm, but formulated feed should be provided for larger fish which are unable to catch zoo-plankton.  相似文献

The selective advantage offered to individuals living within groups may relate to natural enemy defence, but in leaf feeding insects may also relate to overcoming plant defences, especially with respect to feeding establishment. We conducted a series of experiments focusing on neonate larval survival, examining the effect of group size and leaf age on the survival of a eucalypt-feeding beetle, Chrysophtharta agricola , which formed groups of up to 43 larvae on the foliage of Eucalyptus nitens in the field. In the laboratory, in the absence of natural enemies, we found that initial density, leaf age and damage to the leaf margin significantly affected larval survival. Survival of solitary first-instar larvae on young foliage was around 80% whereas on older foliage it was around 11%. Prior damage to the leaf margin significantly increased survival on older leaves to around 61%. Initial larval density also affected survival, although mortality was always significantly higher on older leaves. On older leaves the larval group size above which mortality increased no further was over two-fold that on young leaves. Observations of group feeding behaviour at each instar showed that the majority of larvae (75.7%) were aligned facing away from the feeding site and that only around 7.5%, or just 1–2 larvae per group, fed at any one time. Feeding larvae chewed the leaf edge by straddling the leaf margin. Measurements of leaf margins showed that older leaves had significantly thicker leaf margins and 'thickness' ratios (leaf margin to leaf lamina proper). In the field, approximately 85% of all larvae occurred on the first two expanded leaf pairs, and larval mortality was highest between eclosion and establishment of the first instar. However, beetles apparently did not adjust clutch size according to leaf age.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity in behavior induced by high rearing density is often part of a migratory syndrome in insects called phase polyphenism. Among locust species, swarming and the expression of phase polyphenism are highly correlated. The american grasshopper, Schistocerca americana, rarely swarms even though it is closely related to the swarming Old World desert locust, S. gregaria, as well as two swarming New World locusts. Anecdotal field observations of locust-like behavior in S. americana indicate that it may express behavioral phase polyphenism, but empirical investigations are lacking. In this study, I tested the hypothesis that S. americana expresses locust-like density-dependent changes in behavior during both the first and final nymphal instars. I then compared the expression of behavioral phase change between S. americana and S. gregaria. First instar S. americana exhibited significant geographic variation in behavior with grasshoppers from a North Carolina population expressing more pronounced density-dependent changes relative to grasshoppers from a Texas population. The behavior of final instar S. americana was only slightly affected by rearing density and there was no evidence for a difference between populations. Comparison with S. gregaria revealed that the magnitude of density-dependent behavioral change, particularly among final instar nymphs, was much reduced in S. americana.  相似文献

We determined the numbers of copulations and predatory attacks in swarms ofAnopheles freeborni (Diptera: Culicidae), and the distribution of these events throughout the duration of the swarming period each day. On 19 evenings of observation, we recorded 2724 copulating pairs leaving swarms and 1351 dragonfly (Pantala hymenaea andErythemis collocata) attacks. Mating activity partially coincided with predator activity. Most copulations occurred between 10 and 20 min after the swarms formed, while predation events were most frequent during the initial 15 min of the swarm. We calculated the ratio of copulations to predatory attacks during the swarming period. This ratio was significantly higher in an area sheltered by trees than it was in the open. We suggest that physiological and ecological constraints other than predation operate on the mating system of this anopheline to affect the timing of swarm initiation and swarm site selection.  相似文献

The swarming behaviour of a Baltic littoral mysid shrimp, Neomysis integer, was studied both in the presence and absence of a predator (European perch, Perca fluviatilis L.). I performed two kinds of laboratory experiments. First, the swarming tendency of mysids and the effect of swarm size on swarm choice were studied. Second, the ingestion rate of mysids was measured when feeding alone versus in a swarm. The results indicate that N. integer actively join swarms. The avoidance of the perch by N. integer individuals was stronger when there was a swarm present. Larger swarms were preferred over smaller ones regardless of presence or absence of the predator. The overall feeding rate was similar when feeding alone and in swarm, but predator cues reduced feeding rate only when the mysids were feeding alone. This study demonstrates the capability of N. integer to assess predation risk and social context and alter their behaviour accordingly.  相似文献

The date of the beginning of mating behaviour in males and females, the rate of insemination and the increasing of bloodsucking activity of females were studied in natural environments. Over 80% of females mated on the 3-4th day after emergence; after fertilization their behaviour changed from looking for males for coupling to looking for ones for a prey. The male swarming began on the 5th day after emergence and simultaneously the appearance of inseminated females was observed. The places of mating of males and females were investigated. It was established that coupling took place in swarms with swarming males and out of swarms with freely flying males.  相似文献

Males ofChironomus yoshimatsui Martin et Sublette swarm at dusk, and copulate with females entering the swarm. It is likely in this species that, by restricting the time and place, swarming has the function of increasing the probability of the encounter between a sexually active male and a receptive female in the air. It is necessary that the timing of females taking wing coincides with that of males swarming. Field observations on swarming and mating from March to November showed that swarms and copulations occurred under lighter conditions at lower temperatures and under darker conditions at higher ones. It was suggested that both sexes may have a similar mechanism, depending on the temperature conditions, regulating the timing of taking wing.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. In the three caddis fly species, Athripsodes albifrons (L.), A. cinereus (Curtis) and Mystacides azurea (L.) (Leptoceridae; Trichoptera), males swarm above the water surface of lakes or rivers. Receptive females fly to swarms and are chased and/or courted by males. After one of the swarming males has grasped an approaching female, the pair flies in tandem to the shore where they copulate.
2. In males, wing wear indices were negatively correlated with the ratio of fat/dry weight. In the only species in which comparisons were possible between newly emerged and swarming males (M. azurea), the former had significantly lower indices. Unmated females on average had lower wing wear indices than spent females. These facts suggest that wing wear reflects relative age.
3. The tandem males had significantly less wing wear than those in swarms, and are probably therefore younger. Age is therefore likely to be significant in relation to mating success.
4. Among males of the same relative age, tandem males had higher fat ratio than swarming ones, indicating that male mating success was also influenced by traits other than age. It is suggested that the shortest possible duration of the period of adult prematurity is adaptive, especially in insects with marginal adult food intake.  相似文献

Laboratory rearing of spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana, in conjunction with field rearing, gravimetric analyses, a transfer experiment, and foliage chemical analyses at six dates during the period of budworm feeding activity indicated that the age of balsam fir, Abies balsamea, trees (70-year-old mature trees or 30-year-old juvenile trees) affected tree suitability for the spruce budworm via the chemical profile of the foliage. Insects reared on old trees had greater survival and pupal weight, shorter development times, and caused more defoliation than those reared on young trees. Young trees were more suitable for the development of young larvae (instars 2–5), while old trees were more suitable for the development of older, sixth-instar larvae. These results were confirmed by the laboratory transfer experiment. Young larvae fed foliage from young trees had higher relative growth rates (RGR), digestibility (AD), and efficiency of conversion of ingested foliage (ECI) than those fed foliage from old trees. These differences appeared to be related to the high N:tannins ratio, and the high contents of P present in young trees during the development of the young larvae. Old larvae fed foliage from old trees had higher relative growth rates, relative consumption rates (RCR), and digestibility of the foliage than those fed foliage from young trees. The high digestibility of the foliage of old trees was compensated for by a lower efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD), which in turn resulted in no significant effect of tree age on the efficiency of conversion of ingested foliage by old larvae. The low relative consumption rate of old larvae fed foliage from young trees appeared to be related to the low N:tannins ratio, and the high contents of bornyl acetate, terpinolene, and °-3-carene present in young trees during the budworm sixth instar. Variations in these compounds in relation to tree age may serve as mechanisms of balsam fir resistance to spruce budworm by reducing the feeding rate of sixth instar larvae.  相似文献

The natural wild-type Bacillus subtilis strain 3610 swarms rapidly on the synthetic B medium in symmetrical concentric waves of branched dendritic patterns. In a comparison of the behavior of the laboratory strain 168 (trp) on different media with that of 3610, strain 168 (trp), which does not produce surfactin, displayed less swarming activity, both qualitatively (pattern formation) and in speed of colonization. On E and B media, 168 failed to swarm; however, with the latter, swarming was arrested at an early stage of development, with filamentous cells and rafts of cells (characteristic of dendrites of 3610) associated with bud-like structures surrounding the central inoculum. In contrast, strain 168 apparently swarmed efficiently on Luria-Bertani (LB) agar, colonizing the entire plate in 24 h. However, analysis of the intermediate stages of development of swarms on LB medium demonstrated that, in comparison with strain 3610, initiation of swarming of 168 (trp) was delayed and the greatly reduced rate of expansion of the swarm was uncoordinated, with some regions advancing faster than others. Moreover, while early stages of swarming in 3610 are accompanied by the formation of large numbers of dendrites whose rapid advance involves packs of cells at the tips, strain 168 advanced more slowly as a continuous front. When sfp+ was inserted into the chromosome of 168 (trp) to reestablish surfactin production, many features observed with 3610 on LB medium were now visible with 168. However, swarming of 168 (sfp+) still showed some reduced speed and a distinctive pattern compared to swarming of 3610. The results are discussed in terms of the possible role of surfactin in the swarming process and the different modes of swarming on LB medium.  相似文献

Density dependent processes affecting foraging strategies may in turn influence vital rates and population regulation in large herbivores. Increased competition may lower both forage availability and quality, but whether the main activity constraint at high density is increased searching time or increased digestion time is poorly investigated. In a fully replicated landscape‐scale experiment, we used long‐term data (2003–2009) from domestic sheep grazing at high and low density (80 and 25 sheep km–2, respectively) on alpine summer ranges to test density dependence in allocation of time to feeding (moving) vs digestion (resting) activities and how this in turn affected body growth. Sheep at high density spent more time actively feeding than sheep at low density, but sheep moved shorter distances while foraging at high density. Increased activity levels at high density suggest that the main activity constraint at high density was availability of high‐quality food increasing searching time and possibly reducing intake rates. Increased movement distances at low density is consistent with a higher selection for more productive vegetation types since high‐quality patches are dispersed in the landscape. The alternative hypothesis, that food processing time increased at high density was not supported as it would have reduced overall activity levels. Individual activity levels increased body growth, but this was not sufficient to fully compensate for lower habitat quality leading to an overall reduced body growth at high density. Our experiment clearly documents changes in activity budgets and movement distances of a large herbivore at high population density, providing one potential behavioural mechanism of density dependent responses observed in vital rates.  相似文献

Aspects of Scotia Sea zooplankton   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Information on small scale distributions of three species of Antarctic zooplankton is reviewed. Aggregations of the euphausiid Euphausia superba , the tunicate Salpa thompsoni , and the amphipod Parathemisto gaudichaudii are compared, and the manner in which such aggregations mav arise is discussed. A possible relationship between swarming and feeding activity in E. superba is suggested in which krill are thought to be dispersed whilst feeding but that on repletion they swarm. It is thought that this may account for this species' irregular spatial distribution as recorded bv previous expeditions. A further consequence of this theory is that during the Winter swarming will be minimal.  相似文献

Live food enrichment techniques, using formulated diets and emulsions for improving the nutritional quality of Brachionus and Artemia , were studied as a tool for transferring ascorbic acid (AA) to fish larvae.
Artemia nauplii enriched for 24 h with an experimental emulsion containing 20% HUFA and 0%, 10% and 20% ascorbyl palmitate (AP) were administered to catfish larvae in a 20-day feeding trial. Survival was not affected by the dietary AA, but from day 7 onwards a significantly positive effect of supplemental AA on growth was demonstrated. At the end of the experiment the 20% AP group weighed 30% more than the control (0% AP), i.e. 9.5 and 6.3 mg DW, respectively. Evaluation of the physiological condition was demonstrated by salinity tests. In all three treatments larval growth was relatively low, and it still has to be verified if extra vitamin C in the diet really promotes growth. Seabass larvae fed on AP-enriched rotifers (days 4–12) and Artemia nauplii (days 13–46) showed no significant differences in production characteristics nor in stress resistance, however, for all salinity stress tests the 20% AP group performed better. AA was well incorporated into the predator larvae from the Brachionus feeding onwards.  相似文献

Among many other abiotic variations in an estuarine ecosystem, osmotic stress is an inescapable part of life. Organisms living in such environments must cope with changing osmotic conditions by either behavioral or physiological adaptations. Pollutants may increase the physiological stresses that an osmoregulating animal may encounter. We have developed a flow-through system that exposes test species to insecticides and continuously changing salinity conditions. This system has provided an insight into how susceptibility of a species to an insecticide can be affected by changing concentrations of salinity. Toxicity tests using this system were conducted with two arthropod species that are found in saline habitats: mosquito Aedes taeniorhynchus (Wiedemann) and brine shrimp (Artemia sp.). Four insecticides-aldicarb, dimethoate, imidacloprid, and tebufenozide-were studied. Both species were exposed for 48 h to a concentration of various insecticides that would cause 50% of the population to die in hyperosmotic artificial sea water (ASW). The mortality rate for both species was more acute in increasing salinity (10-200% ASW) than in decreasing salinity (200-10% ASW) conditions. A. taeniorhynchus was more susceptible than Artemia when exposed to its hyperosmotic LC50 concentration of toxicant while experiencing a change in salinity, e.g., adjusting to a changing salinity decreased the LT50. Our results indicated a change in salinity; more importantly, the direction of change altered the susceptibility of these organisms.  相似文献

When feeding on non-swarming waterflea prey, sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, selected larger items. However, when feeding on swarming prey, the fish fed mainly at the edges of the swarms and smaller items were consumed. This selection of small prey items can be explained by the fact that when attacked by a stickleback the waterfleas escaped towards the centre of the swarm, larger individuals more quickly than smaller ones, thus leaving the stickleback with smaller than average prey at the edge of the swarm.

运用3个MRJP(major royal jelly protein)标记分析蜂群的亲缘关系和亚家系组成。

Like other flagellates, Gonyaulax polyedra exhibits diurnal vertical migration and pattern formation. Shape and size of the aggregations depend on container type, light intensity, and cell density. In Petri dishes, cells form oval "swarms"; within these, cells move downward in the highly dense center and rise up at the periphery. We have investigated the daily rhythm of this swarming activity in Petri dishes illuminated from the side, using time-lapse video recordings. At night, a "lawn" of cells forms at the bottom of the dish toward the light source (independent of light intensity). Before dawn, cells rise toward the surface and aggregate in swarms. The daily vertical migration occurs independent of light direction and intensity. The diurnal swarms, however, form every day at the same location within the dish, at a distance from the light that depends on light intensity, indicating a self-selection of light intensity. In constant light and temperature and with negligible vertical nutrient differences, all aspects of the rhythm continue to oscillate for up to 3 weeks, when the rhythm of the population becomes desynchronized. Under cycles of bright white-dim red light (WR), cell entrain to WR 10:10 but free run in WR 8:8 and shorter cycles, showing relative coordination (von Holst, 1939) to the driving light cycle. They also entrain to the 24-hr multiple of WR 6:6. Under nonentrained conditions, swarming activity is still influenced by light changes, and in spite of the apparent free run, the phasing of the averaged activity varies systematically with different T-cycle frequencies.  相似文献

Locusts exhibit two basic forms or phases, one characteristic of swarming populations, termed phase gregaria, and the other characteristic of low density populations, termed phase solitaria. It has been claimed by Nolte that locusts living at low density, both in the field and in the laboratory, have a reduced chiasma frequency compared with animals living at high density. A postulated gregarisation pheromone is held to be responsible for the stimulation of melanin biosynthesis in the swarming animals and an unknown metabolite in this pathway causes the increase in chiasma frequency, as well as other phenotypic changes associated with phase transformation. According to Nolte this represents a means of releasing stored genetic variation necessary for adaptation in the areas invaded by swarms. — This claim has been re-examined in laboratory stocks of Schistocerca gregaria using a methodology comparable to that of Nolte. No reduction in the chiasma frequency of isolated animals was observed in any of the experiments. The isolated animals did, however, develop a phenotype characteristic of phase solitaria in terms of their pigmentation and morphometrics.  相似文献
