Abstract. Salivary gland apyrase is believed to be critical to blood-feeding in arthropod vectors. This enzyme was measured in six New World blackflies representing three taxonomic pairs of non-vectors and vectors of Onchocerca volvulus. In Simulium (Psilopelmia) ochraceum , a highly anthropophilic vector in Mexico and Guatemala, apyrase exhibited maximum activity between pH 8.0 and 9.0, mean 39.8 pM 4.7 milliUnits/pair of gland equivalents (mU), and was enhanced when ATP was used as a substrate. In the zoophilic non-vector Simulium (Psilopelmia) bivittatum maximum activity was significantly less (5.1 pM 0.7 mU) under all conditions examined. Preference for ADP or ATP as substrate was a function of the pH of the reaction for this species. Apyrase activity in Simulium (Simulium) metallicum Bellardi (29.5 pM 11.5 mU), a zoophilic secondary vector in Mexico and Guatemala, resembled that of S.(Ps.)ochraceum (24.8 pM 13.7 mU at pH 8.5) with ADP as substrate, but showed reduced activity with ATP. Both these Central American vectors had higher apyrase activity than found in Simulium (Notolepria) exiguum , a vector of O. volvulus in Ecuador and Colombia. However, maximum apyrase activity, measured at pH 8.0 with ADP as substrate, was greater in S.(N.) exiguum (10.9 pM 0.6mU) than in Simulium (Notolepria) gonzalezi (5.9pM1.9mU), a non-vector species widespread in Central America. Therefore, for the consubgeneric species pairs examined, a positive association was detected between higher concentrations of apyrase activity and their vector status for O. volvulus.  相似文献

Abstract. From May 1984 to May 1985, the transmission of onchocerciasis by blackflies (Dipteria: Simuliidae) was studied around Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb rivers in southwest Ethiopia. The predominant anthropophilic species of Simulium at both localities were S.(Edwardsellum) damnosum sensu law and S.(Lewisellum) ethiopiense. Some S.(Anasolen) dentulosum also landed on human bait at Gilgel Ghibe river.
Dissections of S. damnosum from Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb revealed mean parous rates of 92% (n = 18,291) and 84% (n = 9530), respectively. S. ethiopiense from Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb showed mean parous rates of 53% (n = 322) and 93% (n = 14), respectively. Of the parous S. damnosum , 1.3% at Gilgel Ghibe and 0.5% at Gojeb harboured infective third-stage larvae (L3) of Onchocerca volvulus (or morphologically indistinguishable from it). Unknown filariae of animal origin, indicative of zoophily, were found in 0.3% and 0.7% of Simulium damnosum complex females from Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb, respectively. S. ethiopiense harboured developing (L,) larvae only, with 7.7% infection rate in both localities. In contrast, S. dentulosum did not harbour any filaria larvae. The annual infective biting rate (AIBR) and transmission potential (ATP) of the S. damnosum complex at Gilgel Ghibe river were 858 and 5478, respectively. The AIBR and ATP of S. damnosum s.I. at Gojeb river were 519.5 and 1963, respectively. These results emphasize the predominant role of the S. damnosum complex in the transmission of O. volvulus in southwest Ethiopia  相似文献

Abstract. A subregion of the mitochondrial large subunit (16s) rRNA gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from nine species of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) which serve as natural or experimental vectors of human or bovine Onchocerca parasites. PCR products from each species of blackfly were tested by directed heteroduplex analysis (DHDA), and their genotypes established according to diagnostic banding patterns of the heteroduplex products. Three alleles of mitochondrial 16s rRNA were found to exist in members of the Simulium (Ewardsellum) damnosum sensu lato complex from West Africa, and two alleles were found in the Neotropical Simulium (Psilopelmia) ochraceum Walker complex and the Simulium (Simulium) metallicum Bellardi complex. Different single alleles were detected in Austrosimulium bancrofti , in English S.(S.)noelleri and in two North American laboratory vectors: Simulium (Psilozia) vittatum Zetterstedt and S.(S.)decorum Walker. Phylogenetic analysis of 16s sequences indicated that blackflies from West Africa and the Americas formed distinct clades. Neotropical onchocerciasis vectors were found to be more closely related to Nearctic and Palaearctic non-vector Simulium species than to the African vectors of onchocerciasis.  相似文献

The larva, pupa, male and female of Simulium tergospinosum n. sp. are described and illustrated. The adults of this new species share many characters with species in the subgenus Psaroniocompsa, where it is placed. The larva of this species bears dorsal and lateral triangular tubercles on the abdomen and multiply branched scale-like setae on the body, suggesting that it belongs to the S. siolii species group. S. tergospinosum n.sp. was collected along the Juma River, Apuí county, in the southern part of the State of Amazonas, Brazil. The Juma, a black-water river, is a tributary of the Aripuan? River in the Madeira River hydrographic basin, on the southern part of Amazonas. Females were collected biting humans along the water courses during the sampling period (in the dry season).  相似文献

The distribution of the blackfly larval taxocenoses of different altitudes in the Itatiaia National Park (located in the southeast of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil 44 degrees 34' - 44 degrees 42' W, 22 degrees 16' - 22 degrees 28' S) was investigated on four campaigns, one in each season of 2003. On each campaign 60 samples were collected, using 30 x 30 cm wooden quadrats, distributed at four sites: Taquaral, Véu da Noiva, Três Picos and Brejo da Lapa. The winter and spring campaigns included two additional sampling sites: Alsene and Agulhas Negras. A total of 3578 larvae and 292 pupae were sampled, representative of six species: Simulium clavibranchium Lutz, S. subnigrum Lutz, S. rappae Py-Daniel, S. incrustatum Lutz, S. stellatum Gil-Azevedo, Figueiró & Maia-Herzog and Lutzsimulium pernigrum Lutz 1910. The highest larvae abundance and diversity were reported at the intermediate altitude site, Brejo da Lapa. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) revealed that L. pernigrum, S. stellatum and S. incrustatum were associated with the smaller breeding sites, the first two species being associated with sunny sites, while S. incrustatum occurred in sites with little sunlight.  相似文献

Polytene chromosomes of four members of the Simulium perflavum species group in Brazil are described, and a standard map for the species group is presented. Simulium rorotaense Floch & Abonnenc, S. perflavum Roubaud and an undescribed species (S.‘X’) are chromosomally conservative, each representing a single species with a unique preimaginal habitat. Chromosomal, morphological and ecological evidence indicates that S. maroniense Floch & Abonnenc, previously considered synonymous with S. rorotaense, is a good species. Independent morphological and chromosomal analyses yielded 99.4% agreement in separating larvae of S. rorotaense and S. maroniense. The two species can be distinguished by gill morphology or by a subterminal inversion on the long arm of chromosome III. Simulium maroniense consists of at least four cytotypes, each with different sex chromosomes and autosomal polymorphism profiles and associated with a particular landscape type, altitude, temperature regime or geographical location. Simulium rorotaense and S. maroniense share one unique inversion, as do S. perflavum and S. ‘X’, indicating two pairs of sister species. The anthropogenic S. perflavum probably dispersed into Central Amazonia sometime after the mid-1970s.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Patterns of simuliid species richness were examined over a variety of scales at 532 stream sites in the Nearctic (394) and Neotropical (138) regions. In Nearctic streams, species richness of immature blackflies both within and across ecoregions and over two seasons was examined. Stream variables at each site included seston, width, depth, velocity, discharge, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, dominant streambed-particle size, canopy cover, and riparian vegetation. These variables were subjected to a principal component analysis and derived principal components were related back to richness, using regression analysis. At the level of the stream reach, richness was not highly correlated with single-point measurements of stream conditions.
2. Using data from both Nearctic and Neotropical sites, the effect of regional richness on local richness was examined. As regional richness increased, local diversity reached an asymptote in which further increases in regional richness were not matched by increases in local richness. Hence, simuliid communities are best described as saturated (type II) communities, consistent with the current view of lotic communities as non-equilibrium systems.
3. The well-established pattern of greater species richness in tropical regions was not observed in this study. To the contrary, blackfly richness is higher in temperate streams than in tropical streams at both local and regional scales.  相似文献

We investigated the spatial and temporal distribution of blackfly larvae on a mesohabitat scale atfour different breeding sites in the Brazilian savannah “Cerrado.” A total of 2,385 larvae of 12 different species were collected, and three of the sampling sites revealedspecies richness and diversity peaks in April. A principal components analysis was performed to reduce abiotic data into a smaller set of independent variables, such as precipitation and river size, and subsequent linear regressions showed that Simulium subpallidum was positively correlated with precipitation. This species, along with S. nigrimanum, was negatively correlated withriver size, whereasS. perflavum was negatively correlated with precipitation. Beta diversity was negatively correlated withprecipitation, and black fly taxocenoses were markedly different between wet and dry seasons, as shown through nonmetric multidimensional scaling, suggesting that precipitation playsa major role in structuring these communities, probably because of enhanced drift and the dendritic nature of lotic metacommunities.  相似文献

The last-instar larva, pupa, male and female of Simulium virescens sp. nov. are described and illustrated. This species has a peculiar larva, which has an elongated head capsule and light-green colour. The first thoracic segment has tubercle on its dorsal region and the third thoracic segment has one pair of tubercles; the first to the fourth abdominal segments have one pair of tubercles on each segment. Until now this new species had only been collected at the type locality, which is on the middle stretch of the Correntina River in the southwestern portion of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Females were voraciously biting humans during the field work. This new species represents the second species of Simulium (Psilopelmia) in Brazil and the first registered outside of the Brazilian Amazon Region.  相似文献

The polytene chromosomes of 512 larvae of the Simulium nobile species group collected from 16 stream sites in northern, central and southern Thailand were examined. Band-by- band comparisons relative to the established standard chromosome map for the subgenus Simulium distinguished the 2 species of this group, S. nobile and S. nodosum. The differences are mainly due to the position of the nucleolar organizer, pseudochromocenter, and fixed and polymorphic inversions. S. nobile is a monomorphic species, while S. nodosum is a polymorphic species. The morphology of these taxa is described based on the gill filaments and the color of the antennae and female genitalia. S. nobile is distributed in southern Thailand at low altitudes, whereas the distribution of S. nodosum is in the north at higher altitudes.  相似文献

  1. As global temperatures continue to rise, assessment of how species within ecological communities respond to shifts in temperature has become increasingly important. However, such assessments require detailed long-term observations or ecosystem-level manipulations that allow for interactions among species and the potential for species dispersal and exchange with the regional species pool.
  2. We examined the effects of experimental whole-stream warming on a larval black fly assemblage in southwest Iceland. We used a paired-catchment design, in which we studied the warmed stream and a nearby reference stream for 1 year prior to warming and 2 years during warming and estimated population abundance, biomass, secondary production, and growth rates for larvae of three black fly species.
  3. Experimental warming by 3.8°C had contrasting effects on the three black fly species in the assemblage. The abundance, biomass, growth, and production of Prosimulium ursinum decreased in the experimental stream during the warming manipulation. Despite increasing in the reference stream, the abundance, biomass, and production of another species, Simulium vernum, decreased in the experimental stream during warming.
  4. In contrast, warming had an overall positive effect on Simulium vittatum. While warming had little effect on the growth of overwintering cohorts of S. vittatum, warming led to an additional cohort during the summer months and increased its abundance, biomass, and production. Overall, family-level production was enhanced by warming, despite variation in species-level responses.
  5. Our study illustrates that the effects of climate warming are likely to differ even among closely related species. Moreover, our study highlights the need for further investigation into the uneven effects of warming on individual species and how those variable effects influence food web dynamics and ecosystem function.

1. The spatial distribution and species richness of blackflies were evaluated at 58 stream sites in Central Amazonia, Brazil. Samples were taken along a north–south axis of approximately 130 km and a east–west axis of approximately 220 km.
2. Based on stream-site characteristics, the occurrence of larvae of the six most frequently collected species was highly predictable (79.3–91.5% accuracy in prediction of occurrence). The predictive value of stream size and the presence of impoundments agrees with results of similar work in the Holarctic Region, suggesting a general responses of blackflies to environmental parameters.
3. Although only 19.0% of interstream variation in species richness was explained by a regression model, results suggested that species richness was greater in larger, cooler, faster, covered streams with rocky beds than in smaller, warmer, slower, open streams with sandy bottoms. Overall, the species richness of blackflies (11 species in total) was lower than in the temperate zone suggesting, for some taxa at least, that aquatic communities do not follow the terrestrial pattern of greater species richness in the tropics.  相似文献

A new species of Simuliidae, Simulium (Chirostilbia) brunnescens, was discovered at Chapada dos Guimar?es, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, and nearby municipalities (Paranatinga, Rosário do Oeste and Nobres). This species is described here based on the adults, pupae and larvae. This species is closely related to Simulium (C.) subpallidum Lutz, but could be differentiated in all stages: females, leg colour pattern and frontal dilatation size; males, gonostyle shape; pupae, number of gill filaments; larvae, body size and colour, postgenal cleft, ratio between antenna and stalk of labral fan.  相似文献

Ecology and speciation in African Blackflies (Diptera:Simuliidae)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The simuliid fauna of the Ethiopian region is notably isolated, only two of its species occurring elsewhere; the region has 124 described species, and others still undescribed. Simuliid larvae and pupae are adapted to attachment in moving water; adult females may disperse over considerable distances. This paper considers three examples of evident speciation in an ecological context:(1) speciation on afromontane 'islands' (2) the Simulium naevei group and the adaptive significance of the association between the early stages and freshwater crabs; (3) the S. damnosum complex, which includes the widespread vectors of human onchocerciasis. Maps show the distribution of species in these three groups.  相似文献
