Permian fusulinoidean faunas occur in mainly four stratigraphic levels in the Baoshan Block of West Yunnan and the Sibumasu Block of Southeast Asia, which constituted part of the eastern Cimmerian Continent. The oldest fauna, from the upper part of the Dingjiazhai Formation in the Baoshan Block, consists of Pseudofusulina, Eoparafusulina, and a new boultoniid genus, and is assignable to the Yakhtashian (=Artinskian). The second one, which occurs in the basal part of the Ratburi Limestone and its equivalent strata in the Sibumasu Block, is represented by Monodiexodina, and is probably referable to the Bolorian (=Kungurian). The third fauna, composed of Eopolydiexodina, Rugososchwagerina, Yangchienia, Chusenella, Jinzhangia, and several other genera, is dated to the Murgabian (=Wordian), and occurs in the lower part of the Shazipo and Daaozi formations in the Baoshan Block and the main part of the Ratburi Limestone in the Sibumasu Block. The youngest fauna of probably Dzhulfian (=Wuchiapingian) age is found in the upper part of the Ratburi Limestone, and contains Nanlingella, Reichelina, Codonofusiella?, and a few staffellid genera. A smaller foraminiferal genus, Shanita, found from the upper part of the Ratburi Limestone and the upper part of the Shazipo Formation is also an important element of the foraminiferal assemblage near the Midian-Dzhulfian (=Capitanian-Wuchiapingian) boundary in the Baoshan and Sibumasu blocks. In the eastern Cimmerian Continent, low generic diversity throughout the Permian and the paucity of Tethys-characterizing neoschwagerinid and verbeekinid genera during Middle Permian time are two remarkable features of the Permian fusulinoidean faunas. In the Cimmerian Continent, the generic diversity of Permian fusulinoidean faunas in space and time gradually increases from the Early Permian to late Middle Permian as well as from the eastern Cimmerian areas to western ones. The temporal increase of the generic diversity can be explained by the northward drift of the Cimmerian Continent during Permian time. In contrast, the lower generic diversity of the eastern Cimmerian Permian fusulinoidean faunas against western ones is possibly due to an oblique arrangement of the continent to paleolatitude. Thus, the western Cimmerian Continent was more proximal to the tropical Tethyan domain than its eastern part. In addition, the Middle Permian Cimmerian paleobiogeographic region is likely to be subdivided into two subregions, the western Tethyan Cimmerian and the eastern Gondwanan Cimmerian, based on the distribution pattern of verbeekinid and neoschwagerinid fusulinoideans and overall generic diversity. The scarce occurrence or total absence of these essentially Tethys-indicating fusulinoideans in the Baoshan and Sibumasu blocks suggests that the eastern Cimmerian Continent was still far from the equatoro-tropical Cathaysian domain and was probably in a warm temperate or subtropical zone until the end of the Permian. The eastern Cimmerian areas finally migrated into a tropical zone by the Late Triassic judging from well-developed Carnian sponge-coral buildups in the Chaiburi Formation in the Sibumasu Block.

The Carboniferous and Permian of the Baoshan block consist of three major depositional sequences: a Lower Carboniferous carbonate sequence, a Lower Permian siliciclastic sequence, and a Middle Permian carbonate sequence. These three sequences were interrupted by two major regressive events: first, the Namurian Uplift ranging in age from Serpukovian to Gzhelian, and second, the Post-Sakmarian Regression occurring probably at Artinskian time in the Baoshan block, although the precise time interval of the latter event is still unclear. The Baoshan block is characterized by warm-water, highly diverse and abundant faunas during the Early Carboniferous, by cold-water and low diversity faunas during the Early Permian, and by possibly warm-water but low diversity faunas during the Middle Permian. The Sweetognathus bucaramangus conodont fauna constrains the upper boundary of the diamictite-bearing siliciclastic deposits (Dingjiazhai Formation) to the Sakmarian to early Artinskian, as well as the eruption of the rifting basalts (Woniusi Formation) to, at least, the post-early Artinskian. Paleozoogeographically, affiliation of the faunas in the Baoshan block changed from Eurasian in the Early Carboniferous, to Peri-Gondwanan in the Early Permian, and to Marginal Cathaysian/Cimmerian in the Middle Permian. Cimmerian blocks have more or less comparable geohistory to one another in the Carboniferous and Permian. During the Middle Permian, the eastern Cimmerian blocks such as Sibumasu (s.s), Baoshan, and Tengchong are not far from the palaeoequator, but apparently more distant than the western Cimmerian blocks based on the presence or absence of some index taxa such as the fusulinaceans Eopolydiexodina and Neoschwagerina, and the corals Thomasiphyllum and Wentzellophyllum persicum.

Studies in the past decade have proven the Shanita fauna to be an excellent marker of the northern peri-Gondwana tectonic blocks. Thus,a study of the Shanita fauna from the Baoshan area in western Yunnan Province,China, could provide pivotal paleontological evidence for the paleogeographic reconstruction of the Baoshan block. We systematically analyzed the composition and the age of the Shanita fauna from the Permian Da'aozi Formation in Woniusi Section of the Baoshan area. Results suggested that the characteristic genera Shanita and Hemigordiopsis in this fauna comprised eight species (including two new species),and ten genera of other nonfusulinid foraminifera were also recognized from this fauna.Further comparative study showed that the Shanita fauna from the Baoshan area were probably late Maokouan (Lengwuan)to Wuchiapingian in age.In general composition, this fauna is comparable to those Shanita faunas from Shan State of Burma,Peninsular Thailand, and Nagri of Tibet,China. However, the relatively low generic diversity and occurrence of some endemic species,as well as the absence of fusulinids, indicate certain regional features of the Shanita fauna from the Baoshan area.

A brachiopod fauna including 19 species of 17 genera from an exotic block in the Indus–Tsangpo suture zone in southern Tibet is described and illustrated. The brachiopod fauna is dominated by Martinia elegans and two new taxa: Jinomarginifera lhazeensis gen. et sp. nov. and Zhejiangospirifer giganteus sp. nov. The fauna is closely comparable with those from the middle and upper parts of the Wargal Formation and the Chhidru Formation in the Salt Range of Pakistan, the Chitichun Limestone in southern Tibet, and the Basleo area of West Timor, and these correlations suggest a Wuchiapingian age. The fauna exhibits substantial links with both peri–Gondwanan and Cathaysian faunas, which may imply that it is a seamount biota originally located in the southern margin of the Neotethys during the Late Permian, and was later (in the early Cenozoic) displaced and became sandwiched into younger marine deposits in the collision process between India and Eurasia.

Abstract:  Twenty-three species of silicified brachiopods are described from four samples in the middle and upper parts of the Episkopi Formation from Hydra Island, Greece. These brachiopods are newly recorded from the region and together with previously described brachiopods from the same localities constitute the most diverse Lopingian (Late Permian) brachiopod fauna reported in southern Europe. The brachiopod fauna is Wuchiapingian as indicated by the associated conodonts. The fauna from Hydra exhibits strong palaeobiogeographical links with the faunas from South China. In addition, palaeobiogeographical affinities with the faunas of Thailand and the northern peri-Gondwanan region are also present, which implies a peri-Gondwanan origin for Hydra. Palaeoecologically, the brachiopod assemblage from sample EP in the middle part of the Episkopi Formation is dominated by pedically-attached and cementing genera and reflects moderate energy conditions above storm wave base and an abundance of hard substrates provided by sponges in the biohermal habitat. By contrast, the brachiopod assemblage in the other three samples from the upper part of the Episkopi Formation is dominated by spinose genera with a free-resting life habit, suggesting soft substrates in a quiet water environment below storm wave base on the outer part of the shelf. New taxa are Petinospiriferina gen. nov., Hustedia episkopiensis sp. nov., Waterhouseiella hydraensis sp. nov. and Xenosaria tenuis sp. nov.

Based on the fusulinid occurrence records from a computerized database of stratigraphic distribution, statistic comparisons have been conducted to disclose the differences among six subfamilies (constituting the major part of the fusulinid fauna) in generic and specific diversities, rates of speciation and extinction, and changes in the rates and others during the diversification process of the fusulinid fauna in Early and Middle Permian in South China. Our results reveal that: (1) significant differences exist in the diversification pattern of different taxa and (2) the rates of speciation and extinction in Schwagerininae are statistically higher than those in the others. Furthermore, the high rate of speciation in Schwagerininae contributed to the higher rate of diversification of the fusulinid fauna in Early Permian, whereas the lower rate of diversification in the Middle Permian has resulted from the ubiquitous low rates of speciation in all major taxa in the fauna, such as Schwagerininae, Neoschwagerininae, Verbeekininae, Sumatrininae, and Misellininae.

A brachiopod fauna comprising nine species in eight genera from three closely spaced stratigraphic horizons of the same stratigraphic section is described for the first time from the Laibin Limestone in the uppermost part of the Maokou Formation in the Guadalupian/Lopingian (G/L) GSSP section at Penglaitan, Guangxi Autonomous Region, South China. The brachiopod assemblages are bracketed between two conodont zones: Jinogondolella xuanhanensis Zone below and Jinogondolella granti Zone above and, therefore, they can be safely assigned to the latest Capitanian in age. However, all but one of the nine brachiopod species from the Laibin Limestone carry strong early Lopingian (Wuchiapingian) aspect. Thus, the discovery of this brachiopod fauna not only suggests that some Lopingian brachiopod species had already appeared in the late Guadalupian (Capitanian); more importantly, it has also highlighted the fact that both the previously noted pre-Lopingian life crisis (or end-Guadalupian or Middle Permian mass extinction) and Lopingian recovery/radiation actually occurred in late Capitanian times, sometime before the G/L chronostratigraphic boundary. So far, the Penglaitan GSSP section provides the highest-resolution disappearance patterns of different fossil groups around the G/L boundary.

A fusuline fauna of seven species belonging to six genera from the lower part of the Lugu Formation in the Qiangtang Block, Tibet, is described for the first time. This fauna is assigned to the middle Kungurian based on the dominance of Cancellina primigena (Hayden). Biogeographically, the fauna is characterised by influx of many palaeoequatorial Tethyan taxa by comparison with the underlying Artinskian fauna. The palaeobiogeography of fusuline fauna in the Qiangtang Block from the Artinskian to the middle Kungurian is characterised by a pronounced transition from peri-Gondwanan affinity to a transitional affinity (Tethyan Cimmerian subregion). This transition is considered to have resulted from the combined effects among a northward drift of the Qiangtang Block, contemporaneous global climatic amelioration during the Permian, and the oceanic currents along the new-formed Neotethys Ocean.

A new, high-diversity, latest Ordovician brachiopod fauna of nearly 800 brachiopod specimens was collected from the Wanyaoshu Formation (Hirnantian) in the Shaodihe section, Mangshi City, western Yunnan, Southwest China. Altogether 22 genera and two undetermined taxa were identified; dominant are Aegiromena, Anisopleurella, Fardenia, Dalmanella, Hirnantia and Hindella, less common, Paromalomena, Leptaena, Eostropheodonta, Cliftonia, Kinnella, Templeella and Plectothyrella, together with some rare Petrocrania, Xenocrania, Pseudopholidops, Palaeoleptostrophia, Skenidioides, Giraldibella, Draborthis, Dolerorthis and Toxorthis. This is one of the most diverse typical Hirnantia faunas, associated with the Kosov Province. The paleobiogeographic relationships between western Yunnan (Southwest China), Myanmar, Yichang (Central China), Tibet (Southwest China) and Kazakhstan are clarified using Network Analysis and NMDS. The fauna studied is most similar to that of Myanmar; both resided on the Sibumasu terrane. However, the recalculated network diagram, when including the data of Hirnantia fauna from the Prague Basin, indicates that the latter is more closely linked to that of western Yunnan, a testament to the very weak brachiopod provincialism during the Hirnantian, mainly due to the influence of dominant cosmopolitan taxa. Some species of the fauna display significant population variation. Two of the dominant taxa, Aegiromena and Anisopleurella are systematically described, whereas the other two common taxa, Fardenia and Hirnantia are measured and their outlines and internal structures analyzed.

Earliest Rhuddanian (Silurian) brachiopods are recorded from the basal part of the Lower Llandovery Shiyang and Anji formations in western Zhejiang and northeastern Jiangxi provinces, East China. Associated graptolites including Normalograptus jerini indicate the lowest Rhuddanian Akidograptus ascensus Biozone. The surviving brachiopod fauna includes 19 genera dominated by orthids and strophomenids, whereas pentamerids and atrypids that inhabited mainly warmer water regimes, and were almost absent in the cool/cold Hirnantia Fauna, occur rarely in the studied fauna. Each family is represented by a single genus that seeded their recovery. The predominance of these long-ranging and widely distributed genera is one of major characters of the brachiopod survival in east China. From qualitative and quantitative analysis of faunal composition, diversity and abundance, with evidences from palaeoecology and palaeogeography, the Levenea qianbeiensis Association, Katastrophomena-Leptaena-Levenea Association, and Glyptorthis-Epitomyonia-Levenea Association are recognized and assigned to BA (Benthic Assemblage) 2, BA3, and an ecozone close to the BA3-4 boundary respectively. No Lazarus genera are recorded in this study. Skenidioides and Epitomyonia were chiefly regarded as deeper-water taxa in the Ordovician and Silurian, but are recorded from shallow-water in east China during the early Rhuddanian, indicating an ecologic experiment with these taxa migrating from deep into shallower, better-oxygenated sites at the crisis time and during the subsequent survival interval. This study further demonstrates that the brachiopod faunal turnover after the end-Ordovician extinctions may not have been completed until the late Rhuddanian in South China.

The Permian bryozoan fauna of the Surmaq Formation exposed in a section near Kuh-e Hambast (Hambast Mountains, central Iran) includes ten species. Four species (Fistulipora sawatai Sakagami 1999, Fistulipora takauchiensis Sakagami 1961, Fistulipora monticulosa Nikiforova 1933, and Eridopora parasitica, Waagen and Wentzel 1886) indicate a Middle Permian (Murgabian) age of the formation. Six additional taxa, three cystoporates Fistulipora sp. 1, Fistulipora sp. 2, and Fistuliporidae gen. et sp. indet., as well as three trepostomes Dyscritella sp., Trepostomata gen. et sp. indet. 1 and Trepostomata gen. et sp. indet. 2 could not be identified at the genus and species level. The investigated fauna refers to the Middle Permian of Thailand, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Japan.

The main evolutionary trend in the Mediterranean Miocene toothed whale fauna is related (1) to the change in diversity and (2) to the turnover in community structure. Diversity increases from Upper Aquitanian–Lower Burdigalian to Burdigalian–Langhian, when it reaches its maximum. Starting from this time, diversity decreases progressively. The Early Miocene (Upper Aquitanian–Lower Burdigalian) Mediterranean toothed whale fauna, as well as the extramediterranean ones, is characterised by a high number of endemic taxa and by the prevalence of longirostral forms living in estuarine-neritic environments. A more diversified fauna spreading in neritic and pelagic environments characterises the Burdigalian–Langhian age, while an increase in pelagic forms and the nearly complete disappearance of some archaic longirostral taxa is typical of the Serravallian–Messinian fauna. Decrease in diversity and disappearance of archaic longirostral taxa are also recorded, at more general scale, in the Late Miocene extramediterranean fossil bearing deposits. These events can be related to the progressive global climatic deterioration, starting from Middle Miocene. From a biogeographic point a view, we can outline some relationships between the Mediterranean and western North Atlantic Miocene faunas. Closer affinities are observed between the Baltringen fauna and the northern Atlantic one, because of the presence of the genera Pomatodelphis and Zarhachis (platanistids) in both areas. In the Miocene Mediterranean and in North Atlantic, the delphinids are apparently absent as well as other extant delphinoid groups even if erroneously recorded in the past.
