Laboea strobila Lohmann, 1908 is a conspicuous oligotrich ciliate in the marine plankton. In order to compare different populations, the morphology of specimens from the Mediterranean Sea, North Sea, and Irish Sea was investigated using live observation, protargol impregnation, and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the PCR-amplified products of the SSrRNA gene from a monoclonal culture of L. strobila from the Mediterranean Sea were sequenced and aligned with sequences of other oligotrichs, including a population of L. strobila from the Atlantic coast of the USA. Finally, the data from the ecological literature were summarized and the cultivation methods were described. The SSrRNA gene sequences of the two distantly located L. strobila populations from the North Atlantic are identical. Likewise, the morphometrics of most populations so far investigated after protargol impregnation (i.e. from the North Atlantic) do not show obvious differences. In all computed phylogenetic trees, L. strobila groups with Strombidium species, forming a monophyletic taxon corresponding to the subclass Oligotrichia. These results are corroborated by the ontogenetic comparison. Since no type species was fixed for Laboea Lohmann, 1908, L. strobila was designated in the present paper.  相似文献

A new tintinnid ciliate, Tintinnopis estuariensis Zhang, Feng Yu, sp. nov. was found in the estuary of Yangtze River, China. It was most abundant in September. Its arenaceous lorica is cylindro-conical in shape,(120–180) μm×(50–75) μm in size, agglutinated with mineral particles, and open at both ends. Two characters distinguish it from others: the unique lateral flattened posterior portion with a vertical aboral opening and wider oral diameter. It occurred in water with surface temperature of 14–27°C and surface salinity of 3.9‰–29.8‰.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A species of peritrich that attaches to gills of the skate, Raja erinacea , was identified by its original describer as a member of Caliperia , a genus characterized by having a noncontractile skeletal rod within the arms of its cinctum and by not having the cinctal arms bonded to one another at their tips. Our observations of the living ciliates confirmed by protargol impregnation and electron microscopy revealed that their cinctal arms are linked by a bouton and that the cytoskeletal structure within them has the fine structure of a myoneme. These characteristics place this peritrich unequivocally in the genus Ellobiophrya and it is thus renamed Ellobiophrya brevipes (Laird, 1959) n. comb. Clumps of epithelial cells clasped by the cincta of E. brevipes show damage at their bases but not on their luminal surfaces. The known species of Ellobiophrya are compared for significant structural differences that separate species of this genus.  相似文献

Recent phylogenetic analyses of the peritrich genus Vorticella have suggested that it might be paraphyletic, with one Vorticella species - Vorticella microstoma grouping with the swimming peritrichs Astylozoon and Opisthonecta in a distant clade. These results were based on very limited taxon sampling and thus could not be accepted as conclusive evidence for revising the generic classification. We tested paraphyly of the genus Vorticella by making a new analysis with a broad range of samples from three continents that yielded 52 new sequences of the gene coding for small subunit rRNA. Our results, together with the available sequences in Genbank, form a comprehensive set of data for the genus Vorticella. Analyses of these data showed that Vorticella microstoma morphotypes, Astylozoon, and Opisthonecta form a well-supported, monophyletic clade, that is distinct from and basal to the family Vorticellidae containing other species of Vorticella. Paraphyly of the genus Vorticella and family Vorticellidae was strongly confirmed by these results. Furthermore, the two clades of Vorticella identified by the SSU rRNA gene are so genetically diverse whereas the genetic distances within the one containing Vorticella microstoma morphotypes, Astylozoon, and Opisthonecta were so slight, which marked it as a separate family that must be defined by molecular characters in the absence of unifying morphological and morphogenetic characters. An emended characterization and status of the genus Vorticella, the families Vorticellidae and Astylozoidae are presented and discussed.  相似文献

A marine planktonic ciliate, belonging to the genus Askenasia Blochmann, 1895, is described with notes on its distribution and ecology. Specimens of this new species were collected from four coastal sites across the northern hemisphere. Samples were collected between March and December, from depths of 1-20 m. Relatively low (< 1 ml(-1)) densities were recorded from Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and North Sea coastal sites, whereas samples from the English Channel suggested that this species has the ability to form blooms. Specimens were protargol-stained, revealing the key features of the genus, including the diagnostic sub-equatorial kinety belt consisting of three unciliated monokinetids. However, the species is larger than other Askenasia with a single distinctive, rope-like, scalloped macronucleus. This species also appears to have an extra somatic kinety belt, which may be present but has not been observed in other Askenasia species. Based on size, kinety structure, kinety number, and macronuclear shape a new species has been established.  相似文献

Clam shrimps of the family 1.ynccidac differ markedly from all other families of the Conchostraca. The biology and morphology of the genus Lynceus are poorly known. In North America the genus is represented by four species: L. brachyurus, L. mucronatus, L. brevifrons and L. grarcilicornis. The last species, previously known from two localities in Texas, is reported from an ephemeral pond in north Florida. Amoung the characters distinguishing L. gracilicornis from North American congeners arc dimorphic male claspers and a broad, straight rostral margin. Females are distinct in having a smoothly rounded, distal rostra1 margin. External and internal morphology are described using light and scanning electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy reveals the presence of frontal setose sensory fields and a small rostral pit in both sexe5. Numerous setal types are described from the claspers and posterior thoracopods. Internal structures include a large anterior hepatopancreas, C-shaped gut and large paired gonads ventro-lateral to the gut.  相似文献

Abstract   The adult male of Dixella humeralis is redescribed and adult female and immature life stages are described for the first time. Originally described from the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, the current range is extended to include the pasture lands of the Dorrigo Plateau. Larval and pupal chaetotaxy are illustrated and their putative homology with the Culicidae is discussed. Adult and larval characters are presented that separate the known endemic Australian Dixella species.  相似文献

Spurilla neapolitana (Delle Chiaje, 1823) was considered to be a species with a broad geographic range and substantial colour variability; however, analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear gene data revealed that it is a complex of five distinct species. Further anatomical and morphological examinations determined that coloration is one of the main diagnostic traits for all five species, although some display substantial colour pattern variation. As a result of this study, S. neapolitana is determined to be restricted to the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic. Spurilla sargassicola Bergh, 1871 from the Caribbean is redescribed and confirmed as a valid species. The name Spurilla braziliana MacFarland, 1909 is retained for western Atlantic and Pacific populations. Two new species are described herein. S purilla onubensis sp. nov. occurs in Europe, with a range overlapping that of S. neapolitana. Finally, S purilla dupontae sp. nov. is found in the Bahamas. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Two populations of Epistylis wuhanensis n. sp., a new freshwater peritrich ciliate, were isolated from different freshwater ponds located in Hubei, China. Their morphological characteristics were investigated using live observation, protargol impregnation, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Specimens from the two populations showed identical arrangement of the infraciliature and identical small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene and ITS1‐5.8S‐ITS2 sequences. The zooids present bell‐shaped and 90–175 × 27–54 μm in vivo. Macronucleus is variable in shape and located in the middle of cell. Pellicle is usually smooth with 139–154 and 97–105 striations above and below the trochal band, respectively. SSU rRNA gene and ITS1‐5.8S‐ITS2 sequences of E. wuhanensis n. sp. did not match any available sequences in GenBank. Phylogenetically, E. wuhanensis n. sp. clusters with the other Epistylis within the family Epistylididae, but is distinct from the major clades of Epistylis. Above all, the morphological characteristics and molecular analyses support that the present Epistylis is a new species. Expanded phylogenetic analyses of sessilids based on both SSU rRNA gene sequences and ITS1‐5.8S‐ITS2 sequences reveal that the genus Epistylis consists of Epistylis morphospecies and taxonomic revision of the genus is needed.  相似文献

The ciliate genus Chlamydodon is characterized by a unique cross-striated band (CSB) along the cell perimeter. To date, more than 15 nominal species have been assigned to this genus, all of which are exclusively from marine or brackish water. In the present work, we have revised the genus according to the available data and suggest an illustrated key to aid species diagnosis. In addition, the systematic relationships of chlamydodontid congeners were analysed based on SSU rRNA gene sequences, indicating that all congeners belong to a well-defined clade. Furthermore, we investigated three species from coastal areas of China, including two new species, Chlamydodon wilberti sp. nov. and C. bourlandi sp. nov., using morphological and phylogenetic criteria. Chlamydodon wilberti sp. nov. is characterized by a cell size of 65–105 × 35–60 µm, a complete CSB, and 38–49 somatic kineties. Chlamydodon bourlandi sp. nov. has a cell size of 150–250 × 65–150 µm, a complete CSB, a reddish to violet cell colour, 83–97 somatic kineties, and 40–68 contractile vacuoles. As a further contribution, a well-studied species, C. triquetrus (Müller, 1786) Kahl, 1931, is also re-described.

Identification of indicator species is invaluable for lake management and long-term environmental change assessments. In this study, multi- and intralake datasets were investigated for their fossil midge assemblages (mostly Chironomidae) in the surface sediment layers representing the modern faunal composition. The aim was to examine taxon-specific responses to selected key variables and to assign indicator taxa for these environmental factors. Taxon-specific optima and tolerances were calculated and the significance of a particular environmental variable in explaining the distribution patterns was tested for each taxa. The results showed that numerous taxa had significant relationship with the environmental variables of interest. Thus, several midge indicator taxa were identified for the key variables. For the interest of palaeolimnology, the present results imply that when reconstructing long-term changes in a single environmental variable, variability in other regional, local or in-lake variables can distort the inference due to the complex taxon-specific responses to multiple environmental factors.  相似文献

The cortical development during binary fission of the relatively poorly known stichotrich ciliate, Trachelostyla pediculiformis (Cohn, 1866) Borror, 1972, found in coastal waters near Qingdao, China, was investigated using the protargol impregnation method. The morphogenetic process reveals some pretty unusual characteristics, which do not follow the Oxytricha-pattern: (1) the parental oral apparatus is entirely renewed from an oral primordium formed de novo in the proter; (2) in the proter, the parental undulating membranes are not involved in the formation of the newly formed oral primordium; both undulating membrane-anlagen (UM-anlage) and frontoventral-transverse cirral anlagen (FVT-anlagen) develop from the oral primordium in the proter; (3) the dorsal kineties (DK) are generated in a unique way, that is, in both dividers, two separate groups of DK-anlagen develop in the right- and left-most DK, generate all the DK and evolve to replace the old structures; (4) three caudal cirri are formed at the posterior ends of three right-most dorsal kinety anlagen; (5) eight frontal, five ventral and five transverse cirri are derived from six streaks, namely, the UM-anlage and 5 FVT-anlagen; the cirri are segregated from these anlagen in the pattern 1:3:3:3:4:4 (from left to right) in the Oxytricha mode. Based on both SSrRNA gene sequencing and morphogenetic data, the systematic positions of the genus Trachelostyla Borror, 1972 as well as the family Trachelostylidae Small and Lynn, 1985 are briefly analyzed. The results indicate that this genus/family could be a highly isolated lineage and might be ancestral to other well-known oxytrichids.  相似文献

Evidence provided by six specimens of abyssal Bathytyphlops collected in the eastern North Atlantic indicates the conspecificity of the Atlantic B. azorensis with the Indian Ocean B. sewelli. The data also clarify the distinction between B. sewelli and its congener, B. marionae. The benthic habit of B. sewelli is confirmed. Its reproductive biology is examined and the hermaphroditic pattern substantiated. The species is evidently a multiple spawner with a fecundity of around 6000 eggs. Observations in support of the probable epipelagic larval development of B. sewelli are dicussed. Stomach and intestinal contents analysis suggests that this species feeds largely on benthopelagic crustaceans. Digenetic trematode parasites were found in the digestive tracts of three specimens.  相似文献
