A 3 year field study ofScymnodes lividigaster (Mulsant) adults near Sydney indicated sex ratios close to 50∶50, ♀∶♂. Ratios deviated between samples collected in various periods of year and in individual years. Deviation was related to collecting methods, environmental conditions and behaviour of sexes in different developmental phases. SamplingLeptothea galbula (Mulsant) in 2 different habitats indicated all sex ratios biased towards ♀; ratios apparently not related to collecting methods and with little seasonality. In laboratory sex ratios ofL. galbula were close to 50∶50.
Résumé Trois années d'étude deScymnodes lividigaster (Mulsant) dans les conditions naturelles près de Sydney ont montré que la proportion des sexes était 50∶50. Les proportions varient selon les échantillons prélevés à différentes périodes de l'année et suivant les années. Les variations dépendent des méthodes de prélèvement, des conditions de milieu et du comportement des sexes aux différentes étapes de leur développement. L'échantillonnage deLeptothea galbula (Mulsant) dans 2 habitats différents a mis en évidence des proportions des sexes favorables aux femelles, sans relation apparente avec les méthodes de collecte et avec peu de dépendance avec la saison. Au laboratoire la proportion de sexes deL. galbula était voisine de 50∶50.

Urinary excretion of dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine was measured in a group of adult men and women of comparable age during recumbency and then during stimulation by upright posture. Urinary norepinephrine was found to be significantly higher in women (30.3 +/- 4.4 ng/min/m2 B.S.) than in men (18.3 +/- 2.7 ng/min/m2 B.S.) during recumbency; there was no significant sex difference in dopamine and epinephrine excretion. There was no apparent trend indicating a difference in urinary catecholamine excretion during the follicular or luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. In response to upright posture, there was a significant decrease in the urinary dopamine-norepinephrine ratio in both sexes; the magnitude of the decrease was, however, significantly higher in men (-9.9 +/- 3.0) than in women (-2.05 +/- 0.72). The mechanisms of the sex differences in urinary catecholamine excretion are unknown. Clinical studies involving catecholamines have to take these sex differences into account.  相似文献

T’ef ( Eragrostis tef ) in Ancient Agricultural Systems of Highland Ethiopia. T’ef (Eragrostis tef) has been cultivated in the Horn of Africa for at least 2,000 years. The earliest known agricultural systems in this region date to the Pre-Aksumite period (800–400 b.c.) and appear to have focused on Near Eastern crops, with indigenous African species increasing in importance during Aksumite times (400 b.c.a.d. 700). While palaeoethnobotanical data are available from Pre-Aksumite and late Aksumite periods, macroscopic botanical remains from the site of Ona Nagast, northern Ethiopia, provide a first glimpse of agricultural systems dating to Proto-Aksumite (400–50 b.c.), Early to Classic (50 b.c.a.d. 340), and Post-Aksumite (a.d. 700–900) times. Archaeological t’ef remains from Ona Nagast are examined in detail. Guidelines are developed for the identification of t’ef grains preserved on archaeological sites, with a focus on how to differentiate them from seeds of wild Eragrostis species. Charring experiments reveal that in some cases t’ef may not survive high temperatures tolerated by larger cereal grains, such as wheat and barley. The domestication history of t’ef appears to be different from some other cereals, a factor which may explain the preponderance of indeterminate Eragrostis seeds in archaeological samples. Selection of large seed size and intensified tillage were not key factors in t’ef domestication. Early cultivators were likely selecting for increased branching and higher percentage seed set under conditions of minimal tillage.  相似文献

A follow-up study on 5442 inhabitants (2699 men, 2743 women) was conducted to determine the association between urinary Ca excretion level and mortality of the general population of three different areas of the Jinzu River basin area, namely, non-Jinzu River, mixed, and the Jinzu River water systems, over a period of 6127 d. More than 98% of the subjects were followed completely in each area. In comparison with the low- and high-Ca-excretion groups (cutoff values; 25.1 mg/dL in men, 20.4 mg/dL in women), the mortality rates per 1000 person-years and standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) tended to be greater in the low-Ca-excretion groups than in the high-Ca-excretion groups in both sexes for each of the three areas. Moreover, Cox’s hazard ratios in men and women of the three areas exhibited negative values, 0.99 except for men of the mixed water system. These values were statistically significant in both sexes for the Jinzu River water system and in women for the non-Jinzu River water system. We conclude that the life-span becomes shorter as urinary Ca excretion levels become lower.  相似文献

Diese Reaktionen werden durch das Zusammenwirken der mechanischen und chemischen Komponente des Stiches ausgelöst.
Summary The result of puncturing plant-cells by aphids was demonstrated as follows: The aphids, Myzus ascalonicus Donc., were allowed to pierce detached bulb scales of Allium cepa, in green light, and were then anaesthetized with CO2. The stylets were then severed using iridectomy scissors (Fig. 1). The epidermis was dissected off, mounted on a slide and observed under a phase-contrast microscope. The point of injection remained marked by the stylets which stuck in the epidermis. Intercellular and extracellular puncturing could be distinguished.It was possible to demonstrate a shortening of the time deplasmolysis in the cells lying close to the injection, and also an increase of streaming in the cell plasma. In cells which had been pierced directly, a saliva-sheath was formed (Fig. 2 and 3). The extent of the effect of the saliva was studied using radioactive aphids. After these radioactive aphids had pierced the epidermis the part containing the stylets was mounted on a slide. This preparation was kept in the dark for 14 days, with a special film (Kodak, Scientific Plates, Auto radiographic) covering it. The film was developed and fixed, and a preparation was thus obtained with the developed film covering the epidermis. Darkened spots on the film showed the parts of the cells which had been made radioactive by the saliva.Very fine needles made by galvanic etching were also stuck into the cells, to demonstrate the mechanical effects of aphid punctures. This mechanical stimulus by needles only a few in diameter caused streaming in the cell plasma and a shortening of deplasmolysis time. It is clear that the importance of these mechanical effects must not be underestimated. The increased plasma-streaming was apparently caused by amino-acids in aphid's saliva, and also by the amino-acids produced from proteins when the cells were injured. Kloft (1956) found 4 amino-acids in the saliva of M. ascalonicus. The effect of these amino-acids on deplasmolysis-time is being examined, but as yet no effect has been detected.Finally, when fine glass-capillaries are used to imitate piercing by plantsucking insects and when the glass-capillaries contain amino-acids, deplasmolysis-time is reduced.

Background: Because patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) could benefit from interventions to decrease psychological distress, it is important to identify these individuals. Both salivary cortisol level and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) are recognized measures of stress/anxiety and depression.Objectives: This study was designed to determine whether there is an association between anxiety and depression, as measured by the HADS, and salivary cortisol levels among patients with CAD, and whether this association is affected by gender.Methods: All adult residents of Alberta, Canada, undergoing their first cardiac catheterization for CAD (≥50% occlusion of ≥2 coronary arteries) were eligible for participation in this study. A 14-question survey (the HADS) and 3 saliva-collection devices (a 1-day supply) were sent to the participants' home within 1 week of their initial cardiac catheterization. Participants were asked to take saliva samples for determination of cortisol levels on waking and at 30 and 60 minutes after waking, and then return the completed questionnaire and saliva samples using a prepaid express mailing envelope.Results: Seventy-one adults (52 men and 19 women) participated in the study. Mean (SD) ages were 68.4 (4.6) years for men and 69.1 (4.4) years for women. Among the women, significant negative correlations were found between the HADS anxiety score and the wake-up and 30-minute cortisol levels (higher HADS scores were associated with lower cortisol levels) (all, P < 0.05). Also among women, negative correlations were found between the HADS depression score and the salivary cortisol values, but the differences were not statistically significant. Conversely, among the men, nonsignificant positive correlations were found between the HADS anxiety scores and the salivary cortisol levels (higher HADS scores were associated with higher cortisol levels), and statistically significant positive correlations were observed between the HADS depression scores and all 3 salivary cortisol values (all, P < 0.05).Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the HADS is an appropriate screening instrument for anxiety and depression in patients with CAD. In particular, the scale appears to be sensitive for measuring anxiety in women and depression in men. When the HADS is used clinically as a screening tool, it should be examined through a “gender-based lens.”.  相似文献

Syntheses of l-dopa 1a glucoside 10a,b and dl-dopa 1b glycosides 1018 with d-glucose 2, d-galactose 3, d-mannose 4, d-fructose 5, d-arabinose 6, lactose 7, d-sorbitol 8 and d-mannitol 9 were carried out using amyloglucosidase from Rhizopus mold, β-glucosidase isolated from sweet almond and immobilized β-glucosidase. Invariably, l-dopa and dl-dopa gave low to good yields of glycosides 10–18 at 12–49% range and only mono glycosylated products were detected through glycosylation/arylation at the third or fourth OH positions of l-dopa 1a and dl-dopa 1b. Amyloglucosidase showed selectivity with d-mannose 4 to give 4-O-C1β and d-sorbitol 8 to give 4-O-C6-O-arylated product. β-Glucosidase exhibited selectivity with d-mannose 4 to give 4-O-C1β and lactose 7 to give 4-O-C1β product. Immobilized β-glucosidase did not show any selectivity. Antioxidant and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition (ACE) activities of the glycosides were evaluated glycosides, out of which l-3-hydroxy-4-O-(β-d-galactopyranosyl-(1′→4)β-d-glucopyranosyl) phenylalanine 16 at 0.9 ± 0.05 mM and dl-3-hydroxy-4-O-(β-d-glucopyranosyl) phenylalanine 11b,c at 0.98 ± 0.05 mM showed the best IC50 values for antioxidant activity and dl-3-hydroxy-4-O-(6-d-sorbitol)phenylalanine 17 at 0.56 ± 0.03 mM, l-dopa-d-glucoside 10a,b at 1.1 ± 0.06 mM and dl-3-hydroxy-4-O-(d-glucopyranosyl)phenylalanine 11a-d at 1.2 ± 0.06 mM exhibited the best IC50 values for ACE inhibition. Two types of rapidly biodegradable vegetable products (the liquid fraction of clover and the glycerol-containing sidestream from biodiesel production) were selected for anodic oxidation in microbial fuel cells (MFC) equipped with a biocathode. As benchmark references, five abundant amino-acids in plant sap (l-glutamine, l-glutamic acid, l-asparagine, l-aspartic acid and l-alanine) were tested separately. Their performance was in the same order of magnitude of clover sap oxidation (145–225 A m−3 MFC; 39–95 W m−3 MFC). Glycerol oxidation resulted in competitive current and power outputs (111 A m−3 MFC; 23 W m−3 MFC).  相似文献

We examined the influences of regular sexual activity and marital status on salivary testosterone levels in healthy adult Japanese men. Forty-four men (20–66 years) collected their saliva thrice a day (0900–1000, 1300–1400, and 1700–1800). The testosterone levels at each collection time negatively correlated with the ages of the participants; therefore, residual testosterone levels were used for analyses after correcting for age by linear regression. The testosterone-lowering effect of marriage was marginal and the regular sexual activity more strongly associated with lower testosterone levels in morning saliva. The possible neurofeedback systems underlying the phenomenon are discussed.  相似文献

Objectives: Salivary advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and ferric reducing ability of saliva (FRAS) are increased in various diseases. Little data exist for these markers in the healthy population. The aim of this study was to assess the inter-individual and intra-individual variability of AGEs, AOPP, TAC, and FRAS in the saliva of young healthy individuals.

Methods: Unstimulated saliva samples were collected from 16 females and 18 males daily over a period of 30 days. Markers were measured using spectrophotometric and spectrofluorometric microplate-based methods.

Results: All salivary markers measured were significantly higher in men than in women (P?<?0.05 for AGEs; P?<?0.001 for AOPP, TAC, and FRAS). The inter-individual variability was approximately 60% for AGEs and AOPP and 30–40% for TAC and FRAS in both genders. The inter-individual variability of FRAS was higher in men vs. women (P?<?0.01). Intra-individual variability ranged from 20% for TAC, to 30% for AGES and FRAS and 45% for AOPP.

Discussion: Intra-individual variability of salivary AGEs, AOPP, TAC, and FRAS indicates that their use is currently limited to large cohort studies. Identifying the underlying factors related to the high inter-individual and intra-individual variability is needed. Sex differences should be considered in future studies.  相似文献

A series of N α-acyl (alkyl)- and N α-alkoxycarbonyl-derivatives of l- and d-ornithine were prepared, characterized, and analyzed for their potency toward the bacterial enzyme N α-acetyl-l-ornithine deacetylase (ArgE). ArgE catalyzes the conversion of N α-acetyl-l-ornithine to l-ornithine in the fifth step of the biosynthetic pathway for arginine, a necessary step for bacterial growth. Most of the compounds tested provided IC50 values in the μM range toward ArgE, indicating that they are moderately strong inhibitors. N α-chloroacetyl-l-ornithine (1g) was the best inhibitor tested toward ArgE providing an IC50 value of 85 μM while N α-trifluoroacetyl-l-ornithine (1f), N α-ethoxycarbonyl-l-ornithine (2b), and N α-acetyl-d-ornithine (1a) weakly inhibited ArgE activity providing IC50 values between 200 and 410 μM. Weak inhibitory potency toward Bacillus subtilis-168 for N α-acetyl-d-ornithine (1a) and N α-fluoro- (1f), N α-chloro- (1g), N α-dichloro- (1h), and N α-trichloroacetyl-ornithine (1i) was also observed. These data correlate well with the IC50 values determined for ArgE, suggesting that these compounds might be capable of getting across the cell membrane and that ArgE is likely the bacterial enzymatic target.  相似文献

Hyperzincemia has been reported to cause alterations in the homeostasis of glycid metabolism. To determine this effect on plasma glucose and insulin levels, we studied 36 normal individuals of both sexes aged 22–26 y after a 12-h fast. The tests were initiated at 7:00am when an antecubital vein was punctured and a device for infusion was installed and maintained with physiological saline. Zinc was administered orally at 8:00am. Subjects were divided into an experimental group of 22 individuals who received doses of 25, 37.5, and 50 mg of zinc and a control group of 14 individuals. Blood samples were collected over a period of 240 min after the basal samples (−30 and 0 min). We did not detect any change in plasma glucose or insulin levels, a fact that we attribute either to the ineffectiveness of the 50 mg dose of zinc or to the lack of human response to the acute action of this trace element. The individuals who ingested zinc showed a significant fall in plasma cortisol, probably caused by the action of this trace element.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To compare the reactogenicity and immunogenicity of an inactivated hepatitis A vaccine in two different immunisation schedules. DESIGN--Randomised trial. SETTING--One London teaching hospital. SUBJECTS--104 healthy adult volunteers (71 men, 33 women aged 19-60). INTERVENTIONS--Hepatitis A vaccine to group 1 (54 volunteers) at 0, 1, and 2 months and to group 2 (50) at 0, 1, and 6 months. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Symptoms at and after each dose; liver function, hepatitis A virus specific serum immune response; and responses in saliva and parotid fluid in immunised volunteers and subjects with natural immunity. RESULTS--The vaccine was well tolerated; 97% (96/99) and 100% of those immunised developed serum antibody after one and two doses of vaccine respectively. Geometric mean titres increased progressively after each dose and were significantly higher in men but not women in group 2 after the third dose (ratio between geometric mean titres 0.265, 95% confidence interval 0.18 to 0.39; p less than 0.001). At one year this group-sex interaction was absent; geometric mean titres for both sexes were significantly higher in group 2 (ratio 0.330, 0.227 to 0.478; p less than 0.0001). Antibody responses were not significantly different between the groups at two years. Compared with naturally infected subjects immunised volunteers developed poor or undetectable virus specific IgG and IgA responses in saliva and parotid fluid. CONCLUSIONS--The vaccine was safe and highly immunogenic, and the differences in the immune responses in saliva and parotid fluid are unlikely to affect its efficacy.  相似文献

A total of 3762 subjects of both sexes, natives of Czechoslovakia, ranging in age from 12--55 years, were examined. Both anamnestic data and selected anthropometric variables were evaluated. The proportion of non-smokers for adult males was 47--56%, and for adult females was 54--74% of the population. The proportion of subjects not engaged in any type of physical activity decreases in boys between 12 and 18 years from 28 to 16%, in girls between 12 and 15 years from 25 to 22%; from then on the trend reverses and the percentages rises up to 42% in men and 65% in women. The number of subjects participating in competitive sporting activity reaches its peak at 18 years, when 46% of boys annd 43% of girls compete, but then decreases quickly. 12 year old girls are taller and heavier than boys but at 15 years the relationship is reversed. The LBM at the age of 12 is equal in boys and girls, but from then till 18 years the increase is larger in boys. The LBM weight in adults remains steady, women attaining 77% of the value found in men. The skinfold increases with age similarly in both sexes, except for an interval between 12 and 18 years, when girls show a steeper increase. Adult women attain 121--160% of the values characteristic for men. The grip strength of the right hand equals about 50 kp in adult men and 30 kp in adult women. Within the age range followed, it remains unaffected by age.  相似文献

The 24-hours urinary excretion of immunoreactive prostaglandin F (U-iPGF) in normal children on a free diet was not significantly different in 30 boys (aged 3–15 years; geometric mean 589 ng/24 h) compared to 27 girls (aged 4–14 years; mean 473 ng/24 h). In both sexes this excretion rose with age until adolescence where it reached a plateau.In normal adults the men had significantly higher (p < 0.001) excretions of U-iPGF than the women; also body weight and urinary creatinine excretion were higher in men (p < 0.001).In the children, as well as in the total population, U-iPGF correlated best with body weight (r = 0.44 and r = 0.48 respectively; p < 0.001) and the urinary creatinine excretion (r = 0.53 and 0.57 respectively; p < 0.001); both body weight and urinary creatinine excretion are reflections of total body development. After the correction for urinary creatinine excretion or for body weight, the sex difference in the adult U-iPGF totally disappeared.  相似文献

BackgroundWe aimed to update incidence trends of oesophageal cancer by histological type in Sweden.MethodsUsing data from the Swedish Cancer Registry, we examined incidence trends of oesophageal cancer by histological types in individuals aged ≥50 years in 1970–2014 using log-linear joinpoint regressions.ResultsThe age-standardised incidence rate of oesophageal adenocarcinoma in men increased on average by 3.0% per year in 1970–1994, followed by a more rapid increase of 13.7% per year in 1994–2000, and a slower increase of 2.6% per year in 2010–2014. The rate of oesophageal adenocarcinoma in women increased on average by 4.2% per year during the entire period. The rate of squamous cell carcinoma generally decreased over the past 2–3 decades in both sexes.ConclusionsThe incidence of oesophageal adenocarcinoma continues to rise in Sweden, although the increase seems to have slowed down in men since 2000. The incidence of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma is decreasing.  相似文献

The anti-tumor action of Taxol was investigated in the changes of amino-acids involved in tumor cell survival. By tracing the intracellular amino-acid profiles of HeLa cells treated with non-conditioned and three conditioned media (Taxol, l-alanine, and Taxol + l-alanine), it was observed that an alteration of amino-acid metabolism participates in Taxol-induced death of HeLa cells. The contents of 18 out of 21 detected amino-acids are 5–95% and the ones of lysine and methionine are 158 and 117% of the corresponding contents in the control after treatment with Taxol for 24 h, respectively. Addition of l-alanine inhibited cell apoptosis upon Taxol treatment by partially blocking the increase of lysine and methionine and reversing decrease trend of alanine, glycine, and glutamic acid. These results suggest that interference of amino-acid metabolism might be an important mechanism of Taxol cytotoxicity.  相似文献

BackgroundBiomarker fatty acids (FAs) reflecting de novo lipogenesis (DNL) are strongly linked to the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Liver fat accumulation could mediate this relation. There is very limited data from human population-based studies that have examined this relation.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to investigate the relation between specific FAs in the DNL pathway and liver fat accumulation in a large population-based study.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis of a subsample (n = 1,562) of the EPIC-Potsdam study, which involves 27,548 middle-aged men and women. Baseline blood samples have been analyzed for proportions of 32 FAs in erythrocyte membranes (determined by gas chromatography) and biomarker concentrations in plasma. As indicators for DNL, the DNL-index (16:0 / 18:2n-6) and proportions of individual blood FAs in the DNL pathway were used. Plasma parameters associated with liver fat content (fetuin-A, ALT, and GGT) and the algorithm-based fatty liver index (FLI) were used to reflect liver fat accumulation.ResultsThe DNL-index tended to be positively associated with the FLI and was positively associated with GGT activity in men (p for trend: 0.12 and 0.003). Proportions of 14:0 and 16:0 in erythrocytes were positively associated with fetuin-A, whereas 16:1n-7 were positively associated with the FLI and GGT activity (all p for trends in both sexes at least 0.004). Furthermore, the proportion of 16:1n-7 was positively related to fetuin-A in women and ALT activity in men (all p for trend at least 0.03). The proportion of 16:1n-9 showed positive associations with the FLI and GGT activity in men and fetuin-A in both sexes, whereas 18:1n-7 was positively associated with GGT activity in men (all p for trend at least 0.048).ConclusionFindings from this large epidemiological study suggest that liver fat accumulation could link erythrocyte FAs in the DNL pathway to the risk of cardiometabolic diseases.  相似文献

ObjectiveThis study aims to observe the effect on urine and sweat excretion levels of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in healthy men in a maximum incremental test until exhaustion and repeated exposure to heat.Methodstwenty-nine adult men divided into control group (CG; n = 14) and experimental group (EG; n = 15) performing two maximum tests until exhaustion in normothermia (22 °C) and hyperthermia (42 °C). EG experienced 9 sessions of heat exposure at high temperatures (100 °C) (HEHT). After the nine sessions, the initial tests were repeated in both groups. Urine samples were collected before and after each test. After the hyperthermia tests, sweat samples were gathered.ResultsUrinary Cd increased after initial tests in GC and in hyperthermia in EG (p < 0.05). Urinary excretion of Pb rose after HEHT (p < 0.05). Pb in sweat was higher in EG than in CG after HEHT (p < 0.05).ConclusionHeat exercise and constant exposure to heat can be a valid method to increase the excretion of toxic metals.  相似文献

The developmental history, longevity and fecundity ofPteroptrix smithi (Compere) are described and discussed. Both sexes develop as primary parasites ofChrysomphalus aonidum (L.). Developmental duration at 26°C averages 25 days and the average fecundity at this temperature is 26.5 eggs for unmated and 21.4 eggs for mated females. Under laboratory conditions 50–80% of the eggs are laid during the first few days of adult life. Longevity of females ranges from a maximum of 44 days at 20°C to a minimum of 15 days at 32°C. Male longevity does not differ significantly.
Résumé Les deux sexes sont parasites primaires de la CochenilleChrysomphalus aonidum L. La durée du développement à 26°C est en moyenne de 25 jours et la fécondité moyenne à cette température est de 26,5 œufs chez les femelles vierges et 21,4 œufs chez les femelles accouplées. Au laboratoire 50 à 80% des œufs sont déposés au cours des tout premiers jours de la vie imaginale. La longévíté des femelles varie de 44 jours à 20°C à 15 jours à 32°C, celle des males n'est pas significativement différente.
