Shrub Densities on Pre-1985 Reclaimed Mine Lands in Wyoming   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The reestablishment of native shrubs is part of the mandate under which mining companies extract mineral resources in Wyoming and other western states. Post-mining shrub density and species mixtures have been topics debated by various mine reclamation stake holders. By law, coal-mined lands in Wyoming must now meet a post-mining shrub density of 1 shrub/m2 on 20% of the affected area. To better understand the long-term results of shrub reclamation methods, we measured shrub density by species in 14 pre-1985 seedings at eight mines in three geographic regions of Wyoming. The sites studied were selected as Atriplex canescens (Pursh) Nutt. (fourwing saltbush) and grass or as Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. wyomingensis (Beetle and Young) (Wyoming big sagebrush), fourwing saltbush, and grass post-mining communities. Shrub density and composition varied by site but typically reflected the seed mixtures used. Seedings that used a diversity of shrub species generally had greater 1994 shrub densities. Seeding rates between 60 and 1000 shrub seeds/m2 had a positive, linear relationship with shrub density up to 0.6 shrubs/m2 when sagebrush was part of the shrub seed mixture. We conclude that the likelihood of meeting the shrub standard can be enhanced by seeding diverse shrub mixtures at high seeding rates.  相似文献

Halo-nitrophilous scrubs are characterised by their floristic richness in species of the family Amaranthaceae (include Chenopodiaceae) and the Mediterranean saltbush (Atriplex halimus L.) is one of the most characteristic species in the Mediterranean region. Pollen from Amaranthaceae is the main cause of pollinosis at the end of summer and autumn. In this study, the floral phenology of the species Atriplex halimus L., was studied relating it to the atmospheric concentration of Amaranthaceae pollen with the aim to know if it can serve as an indicator of the maximum pollen concentrations. Observations of the male floral phenology of Atriplex halimus were performed over the course of three years in the central Iberian Peninsula (Spain) and the aerobiological pollen data of Amaranthaceae were obtained using a Hirst-type volumetric trap. The results demonstrated that the flowering period of Atriplex halimus closely coincided with the peak pollen levels. Besides, the prevailing movements of air masses in relation to the distribution and abundance of the halo-nitrophilous scrub during the flowering period of Atriplex halimus were studied using a back-trajectory analysis. The results showed that distinct predominant wind patterns led to differences in the quantity of pollen recorded during the pollen season and in the behaviour of the evolution of airborne pollen concentrations.  相似文献

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate dry matter (DM), nitrogen yield, N2 fixation (Ndfa) and soil N uptake (Ndfs) in the shrubby medic (Medicago arborea) and saltbush (Atriplex halimus) grown in pots either solely or in a mixture on a salt-affected soil, using 15N dilution method. The combined DM of both species was considerably higher than that of solely grown shrubs. The inclusion of saltbush in the mixed cropping system decreased Ndfs by shrubby medic and enhanced % Ndfa without affecting amounts of N2 fixed. It can be concluded that the use of mixed cropping system of shrubby medic and saltbush could be a promising bio-saline agricultural approach to utilize salt affected soils in terms of forage yield and N2 fixation.  相似文献

There is little information available about the impact of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization on the uptake of metals by Atriplex plants. A series of pots experiments were conducted to define the metals uptake response of four Atriplex species to urea (U) and superphosphate (SP) fertilization. The studied Atriplex species were river saltbush (Atriplex amnicola), wavy saltbush (Atriplex undulata), quail saltbush (Atriplex lentiformis), and old man saltbush (Atriplex nummularia). The growth and metals uptake of Atriplex species were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by the fertilizer treatments. U reduced the soil pH by 10% compared to the control. SP reduced the availability of Zn, Pb, and Cd by 24, 16, and 28% compared to the control. U increased the shoots Zn and Pb by 16 and 20% compared to SP. The combined application of U+SP reduced the Zn and Pb concentrations in the shoots by 10 and 13% compared to U alone. U increased the root-to-shoot transfer of Zn and Pb by about 30 and 49%. Root phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) limit the translocation of metals to the Atriplex shoots and this may be by the precipitation of the metals in the roots. The study clearly showed that it is feasible to apply P fertilizer to alleviate root-to-shoot transfer of Zn and Pb. Moreover, pure N application should be avoided to minimize the occurrence of high levels of Zn and Pb in the Atriplex shoots.  相似文献

Abstract The presence of shrubs in arid lands creates spatial heterogeneity that affects the distribution and performance of annual plants; several possible mechanisms have been implicated. A preliminary survey in a chenopod shrubland in South Australia showed differences in the distribution of annual plants under canopies of Atriplex vesicaria and Maireana sedifolia (the two dominant shrub species) and open spaces. A series of experiments were conducted to test the potential contribution to these patterns of nutrient enrichment under shrubs, differential seed accumulation, stress reduction by the canopy, competition by shrub roots, and protection against grazing. The germinable soil seed‐bank under A. vesicaria and M. sedifolia was different from that in open spaces, but these differences can only explain a fraction of the differences observed in the growing annual plant community in different microsites. The soil under A. vesicaria had higher total nitrogen content than soil in open spaces, whereas soil under M. sedifolia had lower available phosphorus than open spaces. Although annual plant densities under A. vesicaria were higher than in open spaces, experimental removal of shrubs increased their density, suggesting that shrub canopies inhibit annual plants in this system. Surprisingly, trenching of open areas close to shrubs (severing lateral shrub roots) decreased annual plant density. We suggest that water moves laterally through shrub roots, in a process akin to a hydraulic lift, increasing water availability for the annual plants. Exclusion of vertebrate grazers had a stronger effect on annual plant biomass in open spaces than under M. sedifolia, suggesting that this shrub provides shelter against herbivory. Overall our results show that shrubs can have simultaneously facilitative and inhibitory effects on the annual plant community through different mechanisms, but more importantly that different shrub species have different effects. This is a potential mechanism allowing for species coexistence of annual plants.  相似文献

Abstract A dune-swale-dune transect in north-eastern South Australia with a regular covering of saltbush (Atriplex vesicaria and Atriplex stipitata) was studied. The transect topography was surveyed, as were the Δ (discrimination against 13C in CO2) of the saltbush plants, and the electrical conductivity and chloride profiles of the soil. Increasing soil salinity, surveyed as electromagnetic (EM) soil conductivity, correlated with a decrease in A composition in the leaves of the C4 Atriplex species. No such correlation occurred with the whole plant. Further, the Δ of foliage was more variable than the Δ of whole plants. The Δ of foliage was higher than that of corresponding stems. We suggest that soil conductivity measured in this way is a meaningful assessment of plant growth conditions, and that further study will demonstrate its scope for incorporation into field studies of native plants at a quantitative level.  相似文献

A cost‐effective approach in plant restorations could be to increase sowing density for species known to be challenging to establish, while reducing sowing density for species that easily colonize on their own. Sowing need not occur evenly across the site for rapidly dispersing species. We explored these issues using a prairie restoration experiment on a high‐school campus with three treatments: plots sown only to grasses (G plots), to grasses and forbs (GF1), and to grasses and forbs with forbs sown at twice the density (GF2). In year 2, GF1 and GF2 plots had higher diversity than G plots, as expected, but GF2 treatments did not have twice the sown forb cover. However, high forb sowing density increased forb richness, probably by reducing stochastic factors in establishment. Cover of nonsown species was highest in G plots and lowest in GF2 plots, suggesting suppressive effects of native forbs on weedy species. Colonization of G plots by two sown forbs (Coreopsis tinctoria and Rudbeckia hirta) was apparent after 2.5 years, providing evidence that these species are self‐sustaining. Colonization was greater in edges than in the central areas of G plots. Through construction of establishment kernels, we infer that the mean establishment distance was shorter for R. hirta (6.7 m) compared to C. tinctoria (21.1 m). Our results lead us to advocate for restoration practices that consider not only seed sowing but also subsequent dispersal of sown species. Furthermore, we conclude that restoration research is particularly amenable for outdoor education and university‐high school collaborations.  相似文献

Atriplex vesicaria Heward ex Benth. (Chenopodiaceae) is a widespread perennial shrub in southern Australia's chenopod rangelands but is sensitive to grazing. A detailed investigation of the demography and population dynamics of A. vesicaria under sheep grazing was conducted over 6.5 years at a range of sites across a typical paddock to assess the long‐term effects of grazing on the species and elucidate the mechanisms of population change under grazing. The effects of rainfall on recruitment and mortality were also examined. Six‐monthly censuses of all A. vesicaria individuals were conducted in permanent grazed and ungrazed plots at sites located across an 1100‐ha paddock. Grazing increased adult shrub mortality close to water and reduced recruitment over a broader area of the paddock, but seedling survival did not appear to be affected by grazing. As a result of these changes, the population declined on grazed plots up to 2200 m from water during the study, but the decline was greatest closer to water. The population was most dynamic at the sites furthest from the water point where it was unaffected by grazing because of the greater recruitment and mortality of young plants, but because these processes balanced out over time, population density was effectively unchanged by the end of the study. Although statistical models indicated that six‐monthly rainfall did not explain temporal variation in recruitment or mortality, rainfall nevertheless has a central role in both processes. In particular, longer periods of favourable rainfall and drought appear to have an important influence on recruitment and mortality, respectively, with heavy grazing during a drought period increasing mortality. Occasional shortages of seed or rains occurring during the warmer months when seed germination is limited possibly explain poor recruitment at sites unaffected by grazing following good rainfall.  相似文献

This article evaluates the seed dispersal systems of two congeneric and endemic fleshy-fruited plants in the context of two relatively close oceanic archipelagos. For this purpose, representative populations of the endangered junipers Juniperus cedrus in the Canary Islands and Madeira, and Juniperus brevifolia in the Azores were studied. Despite both species sharing the same biogeographic region, we set out to test whether different conditions of the islands and biological characteristics of each juniper species determine the distinctive guilds of seed dispersers involved. We assessed the quantitative and qualitative role of the potential frugivores, showing that the wintering Turdus torquatus and the native Turdus merula were the main seed dispersers for J. cedrus and J. brevifolia, respectively (Frequency of occurrence: 74.9%, 80.2%; germination increase with respect to controls: 11.6%, 15.5%; for J. cedrus and J. brevifolia, respectively). The endemic lizard Gallotia galloti was quantitatively outstanding as seed disperser of J. cedrus, although its qualitative effect does not appear to be beneficial. The introduced rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus acts as a disruptor in both natural seed dispersal systems, as inferred from the high percentage of damaged seeds found in their droppings. Our results indicate that J. cedrus and J. brevifolia are primarily adapted to ornithochory processes, T. torquatus and T. merula being their respective legitimate long-distance dispersers. Although these birds should be playing a key role in the connectivity of fragmented populations, the dependence of J. cedrus on a migrant bird involves a notable fragility of the system.  相似文献

Halogeton (Halogeton glomeratus) is an invasive species that displaces Gardner's saltbush (Atriplex gardneri) on saline rangelands, whereas, forage kochia (Bassia prostrata) potentially can rehabilitate these ecosystems. Salinity tolerance has been hypothesized as the predominant factor affecting frequency of these species. This study compared relative salinity tolerance of these species, and tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Plants were evaluated in hydroponics, eliminating the confounding effects of drought, for 28 days at 0, 150, 200, 300, 400, 600, and 800 mmol/L NaCl. Survival, growth, and ion accumulation were determined. Alfalfa and tall wheatgrass shoot mass were reduced to 32% of the control at 150 mmol/L. Forage kochia survived to 600 mmol/L, but mass was reduced at all salinity levels. Halogeton and Gardner's saltbush increased or maintained shoot mass up to 400 mmol/L. Furthermore, both actively accumulated sodium in shoots, indicating that Na+ was the principle ion in osmotic adjustment, whereas, forage kochia exhibited passive (linear) Na+ accumulation as salinity increased. This study confirmed the halophytic nature of these three species, but, moreover, discovered that Gardner's saltbush was as saline tolerant as halogeton, whereas, forage kochia was less tolerant. Therefore, factors other than salinity tolerance drive these species’ differential persistence in saline‐desert ecosystems.  相似文献

Seed movements and fates are important for restoration as these determine spatial patterns of recruitment and ultimately shape plant communities. This article examines litter cover and microsite effects on seed availability at a saline site revegetated with Eucalyptus sargentii tree rows interplanted with 5?C6 rows of saltbush (Atriplex spp.). As litter accumulation decreases with increasing distance from tree rows, soil seed banks were compared between paired bare and litter-covered zones within three microsites; tree row, saltbush row closest to tree row and saltbush mid-row (middle row of saltbush between tree rows). Germinable seed banks of the four most abundant species with contrasting seed sizes and dispersal mechanisms were assessed to test the hypotheses that: (i) microsites with litter cover contain higher seed densities than bare areas, but that (ii) microsite and litter effects will vary depending on seed size and dispersal mechanisms. Overall, litter cover increased seed densities, however, litter effects varied with seed size, with no effect on small-seeded species and litter increasing densities of large-seeded species. Seed bank composition also differed between tree and shrub microsites due to differences in seed morphology and dispersal mechanisms. Water-dispersed species were unaffected by microsite but densities of wind-dispersed species, including Atriplex spp., were higher in saltbush microsites. Densities of wind-dispersed species also differed between the two saltbush microsites despite similar litter cover. Future plantings should consider row spacing and orientation, as well as the dimensions of seeding mounds and associated neighbouring depressions, to maximize litter and seed-trapping by microsites.  相似文献

Impacts of mining activity can be particularly difficult to remediate in wetland ecosystems subject to inundation pulses due to the reduced length of the plant growing season. We used a factorial experiment to test whether litter and seed addition could be used to increase the efficiency of ecological restoration on a flood‐prone forest (known as igapó) impacted by deposition of bauxite tailings. Our results clearly showed that the addition of litter collected from pristine igapó areas increased plant growth, seedling density, and seedling species richness. The increase in individual plant growth was echoed at the community level with higher leaf area index values on litter addition plots compared to controls. Litter addition can enhance reaccumulation of nutrient pools during successional development, which has been proposed as an important feature to ensure self‐sustainability of areas under restoration. The success of the seed addition treatment depended on the species used. Of the seven sown species, only Acosmium nitens (a leguminous nitrogen‐fixing species) showed high establishment. The introduction of nitrogen‐fixing species is also expected to build up the nitrogen pool in the system as has been reported for restoration programs in non‐inundated forests. These practices have the advantage, compared to direct fertilizing, of not causing eutrophication of water bodies when applied to flood‐prone vegetation.  相似文献

土壤种子库作为地上植被更新的潜在种源,在植被自然恢复和演替过程以及生态系统建设中起着重要作用。以宁夏盐池县荒漠草原区4种植物群落为研究对象,通过对封育16年后植物群落土壤理化性质的变化与其土壤种子库的特征之间的关系的探讨,揭示荒漠草原植物群落的土壤种子库分布特征和演替趋势,以及土壤质量的改变如何影响土壤种子库特征。研究结果表明:(1)不同植物群落土壤种子库物种组成及种子密度不同,同一物种在不同植物群落土壤种子库中出现时种子密度也存在差异;禾本科、菊科、藜科植物种在4种植物群落土壤种子库中出现比例均较高,分别占到26.19%、21.43%和19.05%,占总物种数的66.7%;灰绿藜、冰草、碱蓬在4种植物群落土壤种子库中均有出现。(2)4种植物群落土壤种子库中多年生植物和一年生植物种子居多,灌木、半灌木植物种较少。(3)4种植物群落土壤种子库中物种数和种子密度均表现为:芨芨草群落 > 苦豆子群落 > 油蒿群落 > 盐爪爪群落;且随着土层的加深,4种植物群落土壤种子库中物种数和种子密度均呈递减趋势。(4)4种植物群落土壤种子库中Shannon-Wiener指数、Simpsin指数、Pielou指数和Patrick指数均表现为芨芨草群落 > 苦豆子群落 > 油蒿群落 > 盐爪爪群落。此外,芨芨草群落土壤种子库与油蒿群落土壤种子库相似性最高,油蒿群落与盐爪爪群落的最低。(5)土壤种子库物种多样性特征指数与土壤pH、含水量、碱解氮呈正相关,与土壤电导率呈负相关,其中土壤pH和电导率对种子库物种多样性的影响较大。荒漠草原封育以后,土壤种子库中植物种数、种子密度和物种多样性均呈增加趋势,且以多年生植物和一年生植物种子居多;禾本科和豆科植物的物种数和种子密度大于菊科和藜科,这表明围封后牧草品质改善,植物群落正向演替。  相似文献

The initial development of a piosphere created by stocking a new watering trough with ca. 200 sheep at a near-pristine site in arid chenopod shrubland near Whyalla, South Australia, was studied. The following variables were monitored for up to 8 years using fenced plots as controls:shrub mortality; forage biomass and defoliation of the dominant shrubs and short-lived grasses; linear dimensions of Rhagodia ulicina; the density of short-lived species; and the invasion of exotics. Patterns in these variables were looked for which reflected the attenuation of stocking pressure with distance from water; that is, ‘piosphere patterns’. Piosphere patterns were detected for many variables. Those with values increasing towards the trough were mortality of the main forage shrub Atriplex vesicaria. the density of three short-lived taxa, viz. the bassias (Sclerolaena obliquicuspis, S. patenticuspis. Maireana sclerolaenoides), Tetragonia tetragonoides, and annual Zygophyllum spp. (Z. crenatum. Z. ovatum), and growth of short-lived grass species when sheep stocking pressure was low. Variables with values decreasing towards the trough were grass biomass, percentage of A. vesicaria individuals in flower, the percentage foliation of A. vesicaria and of the forage shrub Maireana sedifolia, and shrub forage biomass of A. vesicaria and M. sedifolia. The rate at which these patterns were registered varied. After only 3 months, a piosphere pattern was evident for grass biomass. Marrubium vulgare, an introduced weed, invaded the trough site within the first 6 months. Almost no A. vesicaria shrubs had died after 2 years, but after 8 years there was a marked piosphere pattern in their mortality. The piosphere patterns in forage biomass and defoliation of A. vesicaria and M. sedifolia became more pronounced with time. Some variables did not exhibit a piosphere pattern, such as the dimensions of the shrub R. ulicina and the densities of successive cohorts of the forb Erodium spp., even though there was an overall effect of grazing in reducing their values. There was no mortality of two dominant shrubs, M. sedifolia and R. ulicina, during the first 8 years.  相似文献

Summary Black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda) and fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens) are important grass and shrub species in arid rangelands of the northern Chihuahuan Desert. They are naturally colonized by dark septate endophytic fungi that cannot be eliminated by seed disinfestation. Plants were regenerated from both species and appeared to be fungus-free in axenic cultures. Analysis of callus and regenerated plants of both species using dual staining with light and scanning electron microscopy revealed fungal endophytes intrinsically associated with cells, roots and leaves of regenerated plants that are also associated with native plants. Fungal layers and biofilms prevent direct exposure of callus, root or leaf tissues to the external environment. Micropropagation is a valuable tool for identifying key fungal endophytes that enhance drought tolerance in native desert plants.  相似文献

Initiating Autogenic Restoration on Shallow Semiarid Sites   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Our objectives were to evaluate the use of microcatchments in the establishment of Leucaena retusa (little-leaf leadtree) and Atriplex canescens (four-wing saltbush) and their role in the initiation of autogenic landscape restoration processes on a shallow semiarid site. Three six-month-old seedlings of either Leucaena retusa or Atriplex canescens were planted in 1.5-m2 microcatchments. An equal number of seedlings was planted in control plots (unmodified soil surface). The water collection effects on shrub survival, standing biomass, and the natural immigration of herbaceous vegetation were determined over 42 months. Planting in microcatchment basins doubled Leucaena seedling survival and resulted in a five-fold increase in standing biomass, compared to the control, during the first growing season. There was a significant increase in soil organic matter in the microcatchment basins within 32 months. At the same time, microcatchments planted with Atriplex canescens seedlings had a ten-fold increase in seedling standing biomass compared to the control. Forty-two months after transplanting, the herbaceous standing crop was significantly greater near Atriplex canescens or in microcatchment basins than in plots with unmodified surface soil. Basins containing Atriplex produced significantly more herbaceous vegetation than basins containing Leucaena, and empty basins produced the least herbaceous vegetation of three basin treatments. These data suggest that landscape-scale procedures that concentrate scarce resources (water, organic matter, nutrients, and propagules), establish keystone species, and ameliorate microenvironmental conditions can initiate autogenic restoration of degraded semiarid ecosystems.  相似文献

Seed mass variation and heteromorphism may afford plant species differential germination behavior and ultimately seedling success, particularly in disturbed habitats. We asked whether such variation occurs in Packera tomentosa (Michx.) C. Jeffrey (Asteraceae), a clonal species of the southeastern USA. Seed mass was compared within and among genetic individuals differentiated using amplified fragment length polymorphisms. We compared central and peripheral seeds produced by disc and ray florets, respectively, for their morphology, mass, and germination behavior, including response to water availability, aging, and cold stratification. Seed mass was highly variable both within and among individuals and influenced germination behavior. We found cryptic seed heteromorphism in P. tomentosa. Central and peripheral seeds had similar morphologies but dissimilar mass and biomass allocation. We used failure time analysis to detect different germination behavior. Central seeds were heavier, contained larger embryos, and germinated faster and at a higher proportion in most germination studies. Highly variable mass and heteromorphism of seeds may allow persistence of P. tomentosa in its disturbed habitats. Based on our results, some future studies of Asteraceae species with disc and ray florets may need to account for possible differences between seed types, even when morphological differences are not apparent. Evaluation of individual seed mass and maternal differences in germination studies may assist in the detection of cryptic seed heteromorphism, a phenomenon thought to be common, yet rarely documented.  相似文献

In order to examine the response characteristics and possible reasons of Atriplex lentiformis and Atriplex undulata under salt stress at stage of seed germination, the seeds were treated with different concentrations of NaCl (0, 50, 100, 200 and 300 mmol⋅L−1), 20 mmol⋅L−1 LiCl or mannitol whose iso-osmotic concentrations corresponding to 200 mmol⋅L−1 NaCl. The results showed that the germination rate of two species of saltbush was depressed with the increase of NaCl concentration, and A. lentiformis showed greater salt tolerance compared with A. undulata. After removal of salt stress, the final germination ratio of A. lentiformis was over 93%, while that of A. undulata was only 56%. Evans blue staining revealed that 200 mmol⋅L−1 NaCl did not damage membrane permeability of A. lentiformis seed embryos, but significantly increased the membrane permeability of A. undulata seed embryos and caused irreversible damage to them, especially radicles. The results on water uptake indicated that the inhibition of NaCl on seed germination was mainly due to osmotic stress instead of ionic toxicity, and A. lentiformis exhibited higher salt tolerance due to its greater resistance to osmotic stress.  相似文献
