In the present paper, an experiment was conducted to study the effects of soil moisture content on dry nursery seedling quality in Guangzhou in 1995. Through comparing the difference of dry nursery seedlings and wet nursery seedlings, we found a close relationship between soil moisture content and seedling growth. The seedling emergence of dry nursery seedling was more even, tidy and faster, and the survival rate was higher than that of wet nursery seedling. Dry nursery seedlings had small plant stature, slow leaf stretching speed and low individual seedling dry weight, but had high dry/fresh weight ratio. This was abeneficial factor for seedlings to recover from transplanting shock more quickly. As com-pared with the wet nursery seedlings, dry nursery seedlings had poor rooting ability, but had more vigorous white roots and fewer rust roots. It was the possibly important reasonfor dry nursery seedlings to form strong“explosive force”.  相似文献

The formation of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) in intact soil profiles from two sites in southeastern Australia were measured at two depths using a bioassay grown in intact soil cores. Intact soil cores were taken from (1) topsoil (0–15 cm) and (2) subsoil (15–30 cm) four times during 1990. Seeds of Acacialinifolia (Vent.) Willd. (Mimosaceae) were sown into the cores and plants harvested 8 and 12 weeks after sowing. For 1990, at both sites and in all seasons, VAM most readily developed in the roots of seedlings of A. linifolia grown in topsoil. Limited VAM occurred in roots grown in subsoil cores. Most colonisation of roots by VAM occurred from cores collected during spring and summer. Spore numbers were quantified for each site and depth by wet-sieving 100-g samples of air-dried soil and counting turgid spores containing oil droplets. Three types of spores were found in the soils. Few spores were extracted from all soils sampled, and for the most abundant of the spore types at least twice as many spores occurred in the topsoil than in the subsoil for all seasons examined. As most of the propagules that initiate VAM infection were observed in the topsoil, disturbances which involve the removal and storage of the top 15 cm will adversely affected these fungi.  相似文献

The effects of the presence or absence of Mg in the nutrient solution and of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAMF) on the content and partitioning of Ca, K and P between root and shoot of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) seedlings were examined under greenhouse conditions using soil as basal medium. Mg content of the soil was 14.95 µmol/g dry soil. The infection percentages after inoculation of VAMF were 66.0% and 55.5%, respectively, on application of –Mg and +Mg nutrient solution. Ca content of both roots and shoots did not change by these treatments; but a highly significant decrease in shoots was recorded on –Mg and +VAMF treatment. K content of root was significantly elevated by –Mg and +VAMF treatment but no changes were observed in shoots. P content of both roots and shoots increased significantly with +VAMF regardless of the presence or absence of Mg.  相似文献

Mycorrhizas are mutualistic associations between soil fungi and plant roots which usually improve water and nutrient uptake, influencing plant fitness. Nothofagus nervosa (Raulí) is an ecologically and economically important species of South American temperate forests. Since this native tree species yields valuable timber, it was overexploited and its natural distribution area was critically reduced, so it is currently included in domestication and conservation programs. Among the factors that should be considered in these programs are the ectomycorrhizas (EcM), which would be important for the successful establishment and survival of outplanted seedlings. The aim of this work was to analyze the abundance and diversity of EcM in N. nervosa nursery-cultivated seedlings assessed by morphotyping, fungal isolation, and DNA sequencing. Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) occurrence was also studied. A 2-year trial was conducted following the cultivation conditions used for domestication programs. Seedlings were cultivated under two different cultivation practices (greenhouse and nursery soil) without artificial inoculation of mycorrhizal fungi. Seedlings’ roots were examined at different times. It was observed that they developed EcM between 6 and 12 months after germination and AMs were not detected in any plant. The most abundant ectomycorrhizal fungi present in seedlings’ roots were Tomentella ellisii (Basidiomycota) and an unidentified fungus named Ascomicetous EcM sp. 1. Abundance and diversity of EcM varied between the two cultivation techniques analyzed in this study, since seedlings that continued growing in the greenhouse had higher colonization values, but those transplanted to the nursery soil were colonized by a higher diversity of fungal taxa.  相似文献

Spore suspensions from 7 day old cultures of Curvularia lunata (Wakker) Boedijn var. aeria (Batista, Lima and Vasconcelos) M.B. Ellis were added to soil samples originally devoid of Curvularia propagules. The test fungus disappeared after six weeks of inoculation irrespective of soil amendments, like the application of green manure, urea, superphosphate, or soil cropped to Sorghum (dura) or cotton seedlings.  相似文献

The endoparasitic fungus Hirsutella rhossiliensis and the nematode-trapping fungi Monacrosporium cionopagum and M. ellipsosporum were formulated as hyphae in alginate pellets. In a soil microcosm experiment, dried pellets of all three fungi decreased the invasion of cabbage seedlings by the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica when juvenile nematodes were placed 2 cm from roots; M. cionopagum was more effective than the other two fungi, reducing nematode invasion by 40-95% with 0.24-0.94 pellets cm - 3 of soil. In a field microplot experiment, in which neither H. rhossiliensis nor M. ellipsosporum suppressed nematodes, 0.5 pellets of M. cionopagum cm - 3 of soil suppressed M. javanica invasion of tomato seedlings by 73%. In a second microplot experiment with only M. cionopagum , again at 0.5 pellets cm - 3 of soil, the fungus suppressed the invasion of tomato seedlings whether the pellets were added 0, 5 or 14 days before planting; the population density of M. cionopagum increased to nearly 3000 propagules g - 1 of soil by day 8 and then declined to less than 300 by day 22. Enchytraeid worms were observed in and around damaged and apparently destroyed pellets in both microplot experiments. Whether enchytraeids consumed the fungi or otherwise affected biological control requires additional research.  相似文献

We investigated how the application of composted sewage sludge to tailings affects the physiological response of woody plants growing on abandoned coal-mining sites. Twenty seedlings ofBetula schmidtii were transplanted to pots containing various combinations of artificial soil plus nursery soil, tailings, composted soil, or tailings amended with composted soil. Dry weights, shoot to root ratios, relative growth rates (RGR), chlorophyll content and fluorescence, and carbohydrate concentrations were assessed at the end of the experiment. Growth responses differed significantly among soil types. For example, dry weights were greatest for seedlings grown in composted soil and smallest for plants raised in pure tailings. Shoot to root ratios were higher for seedlings in composted soil compared with those in either tailings or nursery soil. Leaf chlorophyll content was twice as high for seedlings from composted soil than for those in the nursery soil or tailings; chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) was lower for seedlings in either nursery soil or tailings than for those in composted soil. In contrast, plants grown in either nursery soil or tailings had higher starch concentrations in their stems, whereas the carbohydrate allocation of seedlings in composted soil was highest in the leaves, followed by stems and roots. Overall, the carbohydrate content was highest in the leaves, except for seedlings treated with tailings. Therefore, we believe that composted soil can improve the physiological and biochemical properties of trees growing in tailings when appropriate nutrients are supplemented.  相似文献

In December 2003, a severe general yellowing and death of the fronds of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) occurred in a grove in the vicinity of Kazeron district, west of Fars province, Iran. Fusarium solani was isolated from the crown, and xylem rays sampled from the trunk 1.5 m above soil level. In pathogenicity tests using artificially infested soil and 1‐year‐old date palm seedlings, an isolate from the trunk (FST) induced general chlorosis and death of seedlings 25–28 days after inoculation. Similar results were obtained when seedlings were planted in naturally infested soil. In both procedures, distal portions of the roots and crown were affected. The fungus was re‐isolated from the crown and leaf bases of the inoculated seedlings. This is the first report of a serious disease of date palm, which we call yellow death, incited by F. solani in Iran.  相似文献

The experiments aimed to determine the relationship between density of propagules in soil and initiation and spread of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus in the cotton roots. As few as 10 propagules of Glomus mosseae in approximately 95 g soil located in a band 25 cm below the soil surface established mycorrhizas in more than 80% of cotton roots at the point of inoculation within 36 days. Secondary spread was initiated 10–13 days after primary colonisation in treatments inoculated with one, 10 or 100 propagules. Spread of mycorrhizas within the root system was rapid from 100 propagules and was slower with fewer propagules. Accepted: 26 August 1999  相似文献

Actinomycete strain AUM 00500 was 99.5 % similar to Streptomyces sanglieri NBRC 100784T and was evaluated for antagonistic activity towards Ganoderma boninense, the causative fungus of basal stem rot of oil palm. The strain showed strong antifungal activity towards G. boninense in in vitro and SEM analysis showed various modes of inhibition of the fungus. Ethyl acetate extracts of single culture and inhibition zone of cross-plug culture by HPLC indicated that strain AUM 00500 produced two different antibiotics of the glutarimide group namely cycloheximide and actiphenol. In greenhouse trials, oil palm seed treated with spores of S. sanglieri strain AUM 00500 at 109 cfu/ml showed significant (P < 0.05) increase in oil palm seedlings growth when compared to the control. Streptomyces sanglieri strain AUM 00500 successfully colonised the epidermal surface of the roots of treated oil palm seedlings and it was recovered from root fragments plated on starch casein agar.  相似文献

Environmental factors and growth of Histoplasma capsulatum in soil   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary Environmental factors influencing the growth ofHistoplasma capsulatum in soil have been studied. The role of temperature and moisture in the growth of the fungus was found to be critical. The fungus can tolerate very low temperatures, if the soil moisture content is high, but cannot withstand temperatures of 40° C or above for an extended period.Dry, sterile chicken manure and an extract of unsterile chicken manure showed an inhibitory effect on the growth of the fungus. However, the relationship between bird manure andH. capsulatum has not been satisfactorily clarified.Morphological studies ofH. capsulatum in soil showed that the fungus grows within the upper two inches of the soil and a majority of sporulation occurs within the upper one-half inch of soil. Morphological studies of the fungus, in the presence of chicken manure and chicken manure extract, showed an increased number of macroconidia and microconidia and decreased mycelial production. The growth ofH. capsulatum in soil is markedly affected by soil pH above 10 and below 5. No growth was observed on soil cultures outside these values. There was no definite pH range within these values in which the fungus grew more abundantly.  相似文献

Summary Effects of P fertilizers on growth of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var.menziesii (Mirb.) Franco.) seedlings were examined in pots and nursery beds. In pot experiments levels of P equivalent to 300 kg/ha were adequate for maximum growth over 14–18 weeks and resulted in available soil P levels of 80 ppm after 15 weeks' growth. Maximum growth in pots was obtained with shoot P concentrations of 0.18%–0.20%, with higher values at lower temperatures, but the optimum concentration for one-year old (1-0) nursery seedlings was 0.16% P. Growth of seedlings was greatly restricted at a soil temperature of 5°C and an air temperature of 12°C. At a soil temperature of 10°C and an air temperature of 14°C seedling P requirement was greater than at soil and air temperatures of 20°C.Comparison showed that monammonium phosphate was more effective than calcium superphosphate in stimulating growth in pots and nursery. Triple superphosphate was also effective in the nursery. Diammonium phosphate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and phosphoric acid had no advantages as P sources in the nursery. Available P levels of 100–130 ppm, in the loamy sand and sandy loam nurseries studied, and needle P concentrations of 0.18%, when sampled in October, were associated with maximum growth of two-year old (2-0) seedlings.P fertilization decreased root/shoot ratio, but did not alter the allometric relationship of shoot to root. Improving P status from a low level increased root growth capacity in 2-0 seedlings and P fertilization of potted seedlings increased dry weight/height ratio. Uptakes per seed bed ha of 236 kg N, 31 kg P, 81 kg K and 73 kg Ca by 2-0 seedlings were comparable with, or greater than, uptake rates of agricultural crops. Recoveries of 6–11% of P from fertilizer were recorded in the nursery.  相似文献

Pathogenicity tests with Fusarium oxysporum isolated form Malaysian oil palm were made with oil palms seedlings raised form Malaysian seed as well s with wilt-susceptible seedlings gown from African seed. Oil palm seedlings grown form Malaysian seed were also inoculated with African isolates of F. oxysporum f. sp. elaeidis and F. oxysporum var. redolens. The experiments were made under normal soil moisture conditions and under water stress. F. oxysporum f. sp. elaeidis isolates form Africa were pathogenic to oil palm seedlings from Malaysian seeds but the Malaysian F oxysporum isolates were non-pathogenic to plams grown from Malaysian seed or the wilt-susceptible palms from African seed. Seedlings from Malaysian seed proved to be highly susceptible to the vascular wilt disease caused by F. oxysporum f. sp. elaeidis as 75–90% of the palms were infected. The susceptibility of the palms from Malaysian seed varied with different African isolates tested. The Yaligimba isolate from Zaire which was found to be F. oxysporum var. redolens was the most virulent. Disease was more severe when oil palm seedlings were subjected to a period of water stress. The incidence of death in the seedlings under stress conditions was 45% as compared with only 15% for palms grown under normal conditions.  相似文献

Abstract A model was developed to estimate the mean number of infections of seminal roots of wheat exposed to two sources of inoculum of the take-all fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici , in an experimental system. The sources comprise discrete propagules of initial, soil inoculum and infected roots of volunteer plants that had been infected by the initial inoculum, prior to the growth of crop plants. The model was based on the probability of escape from infection by individual roots ofthe crop plants. Parameter estimation was by maximum likelihood. A model was first fitted to data for infection of roots from the soil inoculum. This yielded estimates for the efficiency of soil inoculum to cause infection in the absence of volunteer plants. The parameter for efficiency of infection by soil inoculum was resolved into components for inoculum density, survival of inoculum and the probability of success of individual propagules. The model was extended to include simultaneous exposure of crop roots to soil inoculum and to root inoculum on the volunteer plants. The presence of volunteer seedlings prior to sowing of crop plants resulted in an increase in the effectiveness of inoculum to cause disease. Sowing date and soil condition, as affected by addition of sand, were shown to have significant effects on the efficiency of both sources of inoculum.  相似文献

Rhizoctonia solani caused maximum mortality of mung bean seedlings at 20°C, and the disease incidence decreased with increase of temperature; 30° was optimum for mycelial growth of the fungusin vitro. The fungus grew best in nutrient broth of pH 5.5 but infected mung bean and pea seedlings more severely in neutral and alkaline river sand than in the sand adjusted to acidic reaction. The disease incidence was higher in adequately moist sandy loam and less in soil under moisture stress. Incidence of cowpea seedling rot was higher in heavy-textured loam and silt loam soils than in light-textured sandy- and loamy sand. Addition of montmorillonite and kaolinite in the sandy soil increased the disease incidence, but these clays reduced fungus growth in culture. More seedling rot occurred in the sandy soil fertilized with urea, potassium nitrate, monocalcium phosphate, or potassium dihydrogen phosphate while soil application of ammonium nitrate, potassium chloride, or potassium sulphate decreased the disease. In tests with combined soil application of N (as urea), P (as monocalcium phosphate) and K (as potassium chloride), disease incidence was more in all combinations having P. Among the six micronutrients tested, only boron reduced the disease incidence significantly both in presence and absence of NPK fertilizers. Farm-yard manure and biogas sludge aggravated seedling rot but their water extracts decreased it. Humic acid, extracted from farm-yard manure, increased the disease incidence but was inhibitory to fungus growth in culture. Green manure also resulted in more disease.  相似文献

Contamination of soil by petroleum hydrocarbons is becoming prevalent in Malaysia. Infiltration of soil contamination into groundwater poses a great threat to the ecosystem and human health. Bioremediation can occur naturally or can be enhanced with supplementation of microorganisms and fertilizers. However, fertilizers are expensive and therefore alternative nutrient-rich biomaterials are required. In this study, two organic wastes from agricultural industry (i.e., sugarcane bagasse and oil palm empty fruit bunch) were investigated for possible enhanced bioremediation of soil contaminated with Tapis crude oil. Two bacterial strains isolated and characterized previously (i.e., Pseudomonas aeruginosa UKMP-14T and Acinetobacter baumannii UKMP-12T) were used in this study. Sugarcane bagasse (5% and 15%, w/w) and oil palm empty fruit bunch (20%, w/w) were mixed with soil (500 g) spiked with Tapis crude oil (3%, v/w). The treated soils as well as controls were incubated for 20 days under controlled conditions. Sampling was carried out every four days to measure the number of bacterial colonies (CFU/g) and to determine the percentage of oil degradation by gas chromatography. The two biostimulating agents were able to maintain the soil moisture holding capacity, pH, and temperature at 38-40% volumetric moisture content (VMC), 7.0, and 29–30°C; respectively. The growth of bacteria consortium after 20 days in the treatment with sugarcane bagasse and oil palm empty fruit bunch had increased to 10.3 CFU/g and 9.5 CFU/g, respectively. The percentage of hydrocarbon degradation was higher in the soil amended with sugarcane bagasse (100%) when compared to that of oil palm empty fruit bunch (97%) after 20 days. Our results demonstrated the potential of sugarcane bagasse and oil palm empty fruit bunch as good substrates for enhanced bioremediation of soil contaminated with petroleum crude oil.  相似文献

The present study evaluated the efficiency of lignocellulosic agrowastes produced in Brazil as substrates for production of on farm AMF inoculum and tested different diluents and inoculation techniques. In a first experiment, Sorghum bicolor seedlings were colonized with Rhizophagus clarus or Claroideoglomus etunicatus and transplanted to 20 L bags containing sugarcane bagasse (SC), king palm leaf sheets (KP), or barley hulls (BH) mixed (1:1:1 or 2:1:1, v/v/v) with sand and rice shell. SC and KP were conducive for production of spores and infectious propagules. A number of infectious propagules obtained were greater than with BH and ranged from 233–350 propagules cm?3 for both isolates in SC and KP at the1:1:1 mix dilution. Number of spores of both fungi was affected mainly by the SC agrowaste, and spore densities were significantly higher compared to KP and BH. In a second experiment, SC was mixed with soil or sand and inoculation consisted of transplanting colonized seedlings or adding soil inoculum. Number of propagules tended to differ for each fungus according to the inoculation technique or diluent. It is concluded from the data that SC and KP are suitable agrowastes to be incorporated in substrates for producing AMF inoculum using the on farm method.  相似文献

  • 1 Weevil larvae of the genus Otiorhynchus are a serious problem in agriculture and forestry, causing damage to a wide range of plant species, primarily by larval feeding on roots. Otiorhynchus larvae are a serious pest in forest plantations in Iceland, causing 10–20% mortality of newly‐planted seedlings.
  • 2 We studied the effects of soil fungi on the survival of Otiorhynchus sulcatus larvae. The larvae were introduced into pots with birch seedlings grown in: (i) nursery peat; (ii) nursery peat inoculated with three different species of ectomycorrhizal fungi; (iii) nursery peat inoculated with insect pathogenic fungi; (iv) nursery peat inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi and insect pathogenic fungi; and (v) nursery peat inoculated with natural forest soil from Icelandic birch woodland.
  • 3 Larval survival was negatively affected by inoculation of: (i) the ectomycorrhizal fungus Laccaria laccata; (ii) the ectomycorrhizal fungus Cenococcum geophylum; (iii) the insect pathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae; and (iv) forest soil. Inoculation with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Phialophora finlandia did not have any significant effect on larval survival. No significant synergistic effect was found between insect pathogenic and ectomycorrhizal fungi.
  • 4 It is concluded that ectomycorrhizal and insect pathogenic fungi have a significant potential in biological control of Otiorhynchus larvae in afforestation areas in Iceland. Further studies are needed to establish the effect of these fungi in the field and to analyse how mycorrhizal fungi affect root‐feeding larvae.
