The linear behaviour of the human leg was studied using a free oscillation method. The lower leg is represented by a simple mass, spring and dashpot model. Forty-five subjects underwent free vibration tests on their right legs. The force amplitude and the time period, for successive oscillations enabled calculation of the stiffness to mass ratio values. It was found that the time period of the second oscillation cycle was significantly lower than that of the first, implying a corresponding increase in stiffness. The experimental data consistently exhibits these non-linear characteristics, indicating that the use of non-linear models could be of benefit for future free oscillation studies. 相似文献

Is linear deployment of clones optimal under different clonal outcrossing contributions in seed orchards? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Self-pollen seldom results in vital genotypes and can thus be regarded as unimportant. Large-sized clones (clones with many
ramets) are more exposed to self-pollen and spread more self-pollen and thus contribute relatively less than small-sized clones.
The size of clones required to maximize genetic gain at given diversity, considering that only outcrossing contributes to
successful gametes, was derived for tested clones intended to establish a Norway spruce (Picea abies) seed orchard. The derived optimal deployment was compared with linear deployment according to Lindgren and Matheson (Silvae
Genet 35:173–177, 1986), where the size of a clone is deployed proportional to its breeding value. The study covered a range of effective numbers
between 5 and 50. The results suggest that linear deployment is a good approximation to optimal deployment when only outcrossing
is considered. The difference between the two strategies is decreased by increasing clone number and is negligible except

Purpose
The main goal of any life cycle assessment (LCA) study is to identify solutions leading to environmental savings. In conventional LCA studies, practitioners select from some alternatives the one which better matches their preferences. This task is sometimes simplified by ranking these alternatives using an aggregated indicator defined by attaching weights to impacts. We address here the inverse problem. That is, given an alternative, we aim to determine the weights for which that solution becomes optimal.Methods
We propose a method based on linear programming (LP) that determines, for a given alternative, the ranges within which the weights attached to a set of impact metrics must lie so that when a weighting combination of these impacts is optimized, the alternative can be optimal, while if the weights fall outside this range, it is guaranteed that the solution will be suboptimal. A large weight value implies that the corresponding LCA impact is given more importance, while a low value implies the converse. Furthermore, we provide a rigorous mathematical analysis on the implications of using weighting schemes in LCA, showing that this practice guides decision-making towards the adoption of some specific alternatives (those lying on the convex envelope of the resulting trade-off curve).Results and discussion
A case study based on the design of hydrogen infrastructures is taken as a test bed to illustrate the capabilities of the approach presented. Given are a set of production and storage technologies available to produce and deliver hydrogen, a final demand, and cost and environmental data. A set of designs, each achieving a unique combination of cost and LCA impact, is considered. For each of them, we calculate the minimum and maximum weight to be given to every LCA impact so that the alternative can be optimal among all the candidate designs. Numerical results show that solutions with lower impact are selected when decision makers are willing to pay larger monetary penalties for the environmental damage caused.Conclusions
LP can be used in LCA to translate the decision makers’ preferences into weights. This information is rather valuable, particularly when these weights represent economic penalties, as it allows screening and ranking alternatives on the basis of a common economic basis. Our framework is aimed at facilitating decision making in LCA studies and defines a general framework for comparing alternatives that show different performance in a wide variety of impact metrics. 相似文献12.

Metronidazole (MTZ, 1-[2-hydroxyethyl]-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole), an antiparasitic and antibacterial compound, is one of the world’s most used drugs. MTZ is potentially carcinogenic to humans due to the following facts: it is a proven mutagen in bacterial systems, it is genotoxic to human cells and also, it is carcinogenic to animals. However, due to inadequate epidemiological evidence, it is not considered as a risk factor for cancer in humans. As it will be discussed here, the existing population studies are deficient since they have not included sufficient sample size, the follow-up time has not been long enough, and the individual sensitivity to the drug might have been acting as a confounding factor. Due to the increasing use of this drug, more and improved studies are needed to elucidate its mechanism of genotoxicity and its carcinogenic potential. 相似文献

Development and morphogenesis may easily be thought of as programed, in the sense that they result from a sequence of cellular and molecular events designed by natural selection to produce a given adult phenotype. Aging, except in exceptional cases such as the rapid decay and death of Pacific salmon, is not design but decay. The decay of senescence is not due to natural selection's designing hand, but to its absence. The empirical difference between programed and nonprogramed senescence becomes evident when comparing the stereotypical steps leading to death in salmon contrasted with the lack of such stereotypy in most organisms such as humans and mice. Understanding the distinction between programed development and nonprogramed senescence helps focus attention on the phenotypic performance of adults, which is the focus of natural selection, and therefore be attentive to any unwanted pleiotropic side-effects of genetic or environmental treatments which retard aging. 相似文献
