Buildings with indoor transformer stations may serve as a basis for improved epidemiological studies on the health effects of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF MFs). Previous studies have shown that ELF MF exposure can be adequately assessed based on the fact that MF levels are high in apartments directly above transformers. In this paper, we describe the creation of a registry of Finnish residential buildings with built-in transformer stations and discuss its usability in epidemiological studies. Information obtained from electric utilities and building blueprints were used to identify 677 buildings in which an apartment was located above or adjacent to a transformer station. All apartments in these buildings were classified into exposure categories based on their location in relation to the transformer. Residential histories of these buildings were obtained from the Population Register Centre. Out of the 287,668 individuals who have resided in the buildings, 9,126 of them have resided in an apartment located directly above a transformer station. All information was collected without contacting residents, thus avoiding selection bias. The registry can be linked with data from high-quality nationwide registries to confirm or challenge the reported associations of ELF MF exposure and diseases such as cancer, miscarriage, and Alzheimer's disease. The purpose of this study was to estimate the daily exposure to lead due to food ingestion, air inhalation, and soil ingestion in the Republic of Korea's general population, and to evaluate the level of risk associated with the current lead exposure level using the proportional daily dose (3–4 μg/kg body weight/day) corresponding to the Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) suggested by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives as the toxicological tolerance level. The estimation of the daily exposure to lead via three pathways including food, soil ingestion and air inhalation was conducted as a chronic exposure assessment. For the lead exposure assessment through dietary intake, 1,389 lead residue data for 45 commodities investigated by the Korea Food and Drug Administration during the period 1995–2000 were utilized (KFDA 1996, 1997, 1998). Six hundred seventy-two air monitoring data from 7 major cities during the period 1993–2000 and 4,500 soil residue data at 1,500 sites during the period 1999–2001 were considered for the lead exposure assessment involving air inhalation and soil ingestion, respectively. The total daily exposure to lead was estimated by combining dietary intake, inhaled amount and soil intake corresponding to the typical activity of the general population, which was treated as a group of adults with a body weight of 60 kg. For risk characterization, the daily exposure to lead was compared with the toxicological tolerance level. The level of risk due to lead exposure was calculated using the hazard ratio (HR). The dietary intake of lead was 9.71 × 10?4 mg/kg/day and the total daily exposure level, including air inhalation and soil ingestion, was 9.97 × 10?4 mg/kg/day. The exposure contributions of foods, air and soil induced from the percentage of each media to the total daily exposure were 97.4%, 2.1% and 0.5%, respectively. Of the different commodity groups, the highest contribution to the total exposure came from grain, which represented 47.7% of the total. Additional exposure to lead occurs in certain population groups due to the use of tobacco, alcoholic beverages, and the intake of other foods, all factors not considered in this study. Through the comparison of the daily exposure to lead with the tolerance level based on the PTWI, the hazard ratio was estimated as being 0.25–0.33. This value implies that no increase in blood lead level is to be expected in the general population at the current lead exposure levels.  相似文献

In a specific case, the magnetic field generated in a building by a nearby power line is usually easy to calculate, although the accuracy of these calculations is sensitive to the quality of source information. To be able to study public health dimensions of magnetic field exposure (e.g., risk of cancer), it is necessary to evaluate the size and exposure of the population at risk. Relatively little quantitative information on public exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields of high-voltage power lines is available. This report describes residential exposure to magnetic fields from 110 kV, 220 kV, and 400 kV power lines in Finland at the national level, including 90% of the total line length in 1989. A geographical information system (GIS) was used to identify the buildings located near the power lines. After determining the distances between the lines and the buildings, historical data on load currents of these lines were used to calculate the magnetic fields. The residential magnetic field histories were then linked to the residents by means of a computerized central population register. The data obtained on personal exposure have also been utilized in a nationwide epidemiological study on magnetic field exposure of power lines and risk of cancer. The methods of exposure assessment and results of the number of buildings near 110 kV, 220 kV, and 400 kV power lines, their average annual magnetic fields, and personal exposure to magnetic fields from these lines are described. We found that 15,600 residents lived in an average residential magnetic field ≥0.1 μT caused by power lines in 1989. The number of these residents increased fivefold during 1970-1989. We estimated that 0.3% of the population was exposed in their residences to an annual average magnetic flux density from 110 kV, 220 kV, and 400 kV power lines higher than 0.1 μT, the level that the background magnetic flux density in general does not exceed in Finnish homes. Thus, the problem of magnetic field exposure generated by high-voltage lines concerns only a relatively small fraction of the total population in Finland. However, the size and exposure of the population at risk remain somewhat arbitrary in practical multisource situations, as the biological interaction mechanism, the concept of harmful dose, and, in particular, the significance of the duration of exposure are unknown. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Humans are potentially exposed to phthalate esters (PEs) through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. Studies quantifying exposure to PEs include “biomarker studies” and “indirect studies.” Biomarker studies use measurements of PE metabolites in urine to back-calculate exposure to the parent diester, while indirect studies use the concentration of the PE in each medium of exposure and the rate of intake of that medium to quantify intake of the PE. In this review, exposure estimates from biomarker and indirect studies are compiled and compared for seven PEs to determine if there are regional differences and if there is a preferred approach. The indirect and biomarker methods generally agree with each other within an order of magnitude and discrepancies are explained by difficulties in accounting for use of consumer products, uncertainty concerning absorption, regional differences, and temporal changes. No single method is preferred for estimating intake of all PEs; it is suggested that biomarker estimates be used for low molecular weight PEs for which it is difficult to quantify all sources of exposure and either indirect or biomarker methods be used for higher molecular weight PEs. The indirect methods are useful in identifying sources of exposure while the biomarker methods quantify exposure.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate residential short term "spot" measurements as surrogates for long term personal magnetic field (MF) exposure. In an epidemiological study on birth weight and pregnancy delay, MF exposure was assessed by taking five spot measurements in each room. For a subsample of 30 subjects 24 h personal MF measurements were made, and the following exposure metrics were calculated: 24 h arithmetic mean, 24 h median, percentage of time above 0.15 microT, and percentage of time above 0.29 microT. The 24 h exposure metrics were used as gold standards, when evaluating the validity of various summary measures calculated from spot measurements for assessing personal exposure. Based on Spearman correlation coefficient (r), specificity and sensitivity, the average of the spot measurements of a residence resulted in least exposure measurement error (misclassification). Also the above bed spot value correlated better with the 24 h metrics than any room average. Spot measurements performed about equally well in predicting different types of exposure metrics.  相似文献

In Hungary it is typical that 10/04 kV transformer stations are being installed in multistory residential and office buildings. Magnetic fields (MFs) up to several tens of microT have been measured in apartments close to transformers. The aim of the present study was to provide systematic assessment of MF exposure of residents living above transformer stations. Out of 41 addresses provided by the electricity supplier, current load of 21 transformers and MF in 21 apartments was measured. Spot MFs at 1 m height and time weighted average 24 h MF exposure at bed height was measured. All-day personal MF exposure was measured at waist and HOME exposure was calculated. BED exposure was measured at bed height. Participants kept a time-activity diary. The time-weighted average 24 h MF exposure (3.03 microT) exceeded the usual residential exposure (<0.2 microT). The mean HOME and BED personal exposure above transformers was 0.825 and 1.033 microT, respectively. Our study provides exposure assessment of a cohort with a wider exposure range, compared to power-line epidemiological studies.  相似文献

Rats were exposed to 0.5% halothane in air for 8 h per day during the intervals (1) 5 days postconception to birth, (2) birth to 5 days postnatal age, or (3) birth to 10 days postnatal age. Controls were exposed to an equivalent flow of air. Prenatal exposure had no significant effect on body or brain weight and no subsequent effect on the relative synthesis of brain subcellular membranes. Five days of postnatal exposure caused a 10% reduction in body and brain weight and a 10% relative reduction in the synthesis of brain myelin. The effect persisted throughout the period of rapid postnatal brain myelination. Ten days of postnatal exposure produced equivalent, more severe effects on body and brain weights and a more severe effect on myelin synthesis. Postnatal exposure had no apparent effect on the relative synthesis of non-myelin particulate proteins.  相似文献

This article is a consensus position statement from the Research Committee of the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (OTIS). The Committee believes that more specific information on the timing and dose of drug exposures from pregnancy birth defect registries sponsored by pharmaceutical companies (herein called pregnancy registries) would improve the estimation of risk for developmental toxicity (i.e., growth alteration, structural anomalies, functional/neurobehavioral deficits, or death). Specifically, the Committee believes that the exposure timing should be stated in gestational weeks and days rather than simply weeks. In addition, the Committee believes that the exposure dose should be stated in patient‐specific terms, such as body weight (mg/kg) or body surface area (mg/m2) rather than simply dose strength. Although the focus of this position is pregnancy registries, it also is applicable to any source of medication‐induced embryo‐fetal toxicity. A variety of exposure factors ultimately control the uptake of xenobiotic chemicals by colonial piscivorous birds, such as herons and egrets. These factors, which include feeding rate for various food sources, feeding territory size, and body weight, are critical to the implementation of models commonly used to predict ecological risks. A critical evaluation of literature on avian behavior, physiology, and ecology was conducted in order to identify those variables that most strongly influence uptake of chemicals by herons and egrets. After developing a database of such exposure factors, we identified each factor's range, central tendency, and distribution. Sufficient information was available to allow the development of statistical distributions for body weight, fraction of diet from fish, prey length, distance to foraging site, and feeding territory size for great blue herons. The five distributions presented in this paper are intended to support probabilistic assessments of potential risks to great blue herons. Distributions of exposure factors for great blue herons have not been previously published. Without such data, application of all but the most simple mechanistic models will require point estimates, most of which will be overly conservative and will not support accurate characterization of actual exposures of herons at hazardous waste sites.  相似文献

目的:探讨产前手机暴露对子代大鼠海马齿状回增殖细胞核抗原(PCNA)和双皮质素(DCX)表达的影响。方法:构建孕鼠手机射频暴露模型,分为对照组、短时暴露组和长时暴露组(n=6),短时和长时暴露组于孕第1-17天分别给予6 h/d和24 h/d的手机通话暴露,观察孕鼠的孕期长短、孕期体重增长和各组的胎儿数、胎儿出生体重。1月龄子代大鼠行焦油紫染色观察海马齿状回细胞形态,免疫组化观察齿状回PCNA和DCX表达,Western blot检测DCX和脑源性神经营养因子(BDNF)表达。结果:各组孕鼠的孕期、妊娠期体重增长和各组的胎儿数、胎儿出生体重无显著差异,长时暴露组子代大鼠的齿状回多形细胞层锥形细胞和DCX阳性细胞出现形态改变。与对照组、短时暴露组比较,长时暴露组子代大鼠齿状回PCNA阳性细胞和DCX、BDNF表达均明显减少(P<0.05)。结论:产前长时手机暴露可能通过改变子代大鼠海马BDNF而影响齿状回的PCNA和DCX表达。  相似文献

Cold adaptation is a body''s protective response to cold stress. Mild chronic intermittent cold (CIC) exposure has been used to generate animal models for cold adaptation studies. However, the effects of mild CIC exposure on vital organs are not completely characterized. In the present study, we exposed rats to mild CIC for two weeks, and then measured the body weights, the weights of brown adipose tissue (BAT), the levels of ATP and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the brains, livers, hearts, muscles and BATs. Rats formed cold adaptation after exposure to CIC for two weeks. Compared to rats of the control group that were hosted under ambient temperature, rats exposed to mild CIC showed a lower average body weight, but a higher weight of brown adipose tissue (BAT). Rats exposed to CIC for two weeks also exhibited higher levels of ATP and ROS in all examined organs as compared to those of the control group. In addition, we determined the expression levels of cold-inducible RNA binding protein (Cirbp) and thioredoxin (TRX) in rat tissues after 2 weeks of CIC exposure. Both Cirbp and TRX were increased, suggesting a role of these two proteins for establishment of cold adaptation. Together, this study reveals the effects of mild CIC exposure on vital organs of rats during CIC exposure.  相似文献

Background—A review by Glantz and Parmley published in 1995 and subsequently widely cited claims to demonstrate that passive smoke exposure increases the risk of heart disease. We have critically examined this claim in the light of the published evidence which they cite and of more recent publications. Methods and results—An updated review of the epidemiological evidence reveals no association between heart disease and ETS exposure in the workplace. Claims of an association with spousal smoking are weakened by the existence of various forms of bias in the studies. They are also undermined by recent reports from three large studies without evident major weaknesses which find essentially no association with spousal smoking. Interpretation of the experimental clinical studies is problematic because it is not possible to expose humans to ETS without their knowledge. For several reasons, short-term effects of exposure to unrealistically high concentrations of ETS throw no useful light on risk of coronary atherogenesis from long-term realistic exposure. In particular, the fact that humans can adapt to reduced ambient oxygen availability needs to be allowed for. Effects of counts of anuclear endothelial cell carcasses in circulating blood after ETS exposure are uninterpretable without basic information on the significance of this endpoint. The need for a realistic animal model for coronary atherosclerosis is not fulfilled by short-term studies in rats, rabbits, hamsters, birds or dogs in which aortic atheromatous plaque formation is used as a surrogate endpoint. Stress from confinement within cages, from the noise of fans and from irritation from high ETS concentrations needs to be controlled for, particularly in experiments on rabbits and birds. This has not been done and there is generally a serious dearth of information on the non-specific or specific effects of other environmental chemicals on many of the endpoints that have been used. Studies on the possible role of platelets in the aetiology of coronary heart disease are difficult to interpret because of confusion between their possible long-term role in atherogenesis and their putative involvement in thrombus formation which results in myocardial infarction. Evidence from an inadequately designed one-day study involving persons exposed to unmeasured amounts of ETS in a hospital corridor provides no insight into mechanisms involved in coronary atherogenesis. A study of the effect of exposure to ETS on the diameter of the brachial artery diameter is open to criticism because of the way in which subjects were recruited and failure to control for potentially important confounders. Conclusion — The available experimental and epidemiological evidence does not justify a conclusion that ETS exposure increases the risk of heart disease.  相似文献

This paper demonstrates the application of effects function analysis to residential magnetic field exposure, focusing on appliance sources and mitigation choices. Residential field exposure time series were synthesized by using a sample of background household field measurements, a model of average daily appliance use, and a small sample of EMDEX data of field exposure from 12 household appliances. Four alternative effects functions (average field strength with or without a threshold, field strength window, sudden field changes) were simulated by using the synthesized time series data for different exposure situations, such as high and low levels of appliance use, simple avoidance, and use of a set of hypothetical “low field” appliances (50% lower fields). In particular, field exposure from the use of bedside clocks and electric blankets was examined. Results demonstrate that the choice of effects function is critical for the ranks of field sources and exposure reduction choices. For the effects function of average field strength with or without a threshold, exposure from background fields dominated exposure from all appliances except for bedside clocks and electric blankets. In the case of the field strength window effects function, the dominant field sources changed with the width of the window. For the effects function based on rapid field changes, appliance use was the major source of exposure. In 1995, Oregon enacted amendments to its state Cleanup Law that emphasize risk-based remedial action decisions and allow a responsible party to conduct probabilistic human health risk assessments. This change required selection and/or development of probability density functions for exposure factors frequently used in human health risk assessments. Methods used to obtain distributions for body weight, soil, water, vegetable/fruit, fish, and animal product ingestion, soil adherence, daily inhalation rate, various event and exposure frequencies, and exposure duration are described. Primary data sources were U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidance and peer-reviewed scientific literature. These distributions of exposure factors may be used, in conjunction with a probabilistic age- and gender-based model, to calculate prospective exposures and risks. A brief overview of this model, which handles temporal parameters (age, exposure frequency, exposure duration) in a manner substantially different from that typically used in deterministic assessments, is also provided. Oregon's development of an age/ gender-based exposure model, and its selection of exposure factor value distributions for that model, represents one of the first attempts to develop practical approaches to using probabilistic techniques in a hazardous waste regulatory program.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the exposure to magnetic fields of children living at different distances from a power line and to evaluate how well theoretical calculations compared with actual exposure. Personal exposure instruments were carried for 24 h by 65 schoolchildren living 28–325 m from a 300 kV transmission line; the current load was 200–700 A. About half of the children attended a school far from the power line, whereas the other half attended a school located about 25 m from the line. Exposure to magnetic fields was analyzed for three categories of location: at home, at school, and at all other places. Time spent in bed was analyzed separately. The results indicated that children who lived close to a power line had a higher magnetic field exposure than other children. The power line was the most important source of exposure when the magnetic field due to the line was greater than about 0.2 μT. Exposure at school influenced the 24 h time-weighted average results considerably in those cases where the distance between home and power line was very different from the distance between school and power line. The calculated magnetic field, based on line configuration, current load, and distance between home and power line, corresponded reasonably well with the measured field. However, the correlation depends on whether home only or 24 h exposure is used in the analysis and on which school the children attended. The calculated magnetic field seems to be a reasonably good predictor of actual exposure and could be used in epidemiological studies, at least in Norway, where the electrical system normally results in less ground current than in most other countries. Mobile phones (MP) emit low-level electromagnetic fields that have been reported to affect neural function in humans; however, demonstrations of such effects have not been conclusive. The purpose of the present study was to test one of the strongest findings in the literature; that of increased "alpha" power in response to MP-type radiation. Healthy participants (N = 120) were tested using a double-blind counterbalanced crossover design, with each receiving a 30-min Active and a 30-min Sham Exposure 1 week apart, while electroencephalogram (EEG) data were recorded. Resting alpha power (8-12 Hz) was then derived as a function of time, for periods both during and following exposure. Non-parametric analyses were employed as data could not be normalized. Previous reports of an overall alpha power enhancement during the MP exposure were confirmed (relative to Sham), with this effect larger at ipsilateral than contralateral sites over posterior regions. No overall change to alpha power was observed following exposure cessation; however, there was less alpha power contralateral to the exposure source during this period (relative to ipsilateral). Employing a strong methodology, the current findings support previous research that has reported an effect of MP exposure on EEG alpha power.  相似文献

Personal RF exposimetry has been in the focus of the bioelectromagnetics community in the last few years. With a few exceptions, exposimetry studies focused on adults, because measuring the exposure of children, one of the most important target groups, introduces many complications.The main feature of our study is to select teachers and kindergarten caretakers as volunteers. They are expected to receive similar exposure patterns as the children because they spend the workday close to them. Thus they can stand as proxies for estimation of exposures of children.Volunteers belonging to one of two groups (elementary school teachers, n = 31; employees of kindergartens and day nurseries, n = 50) in Hungarian cities received a Personal Exposimeter (PEM) for 24 h each. Only workdays, when the volunteers worked near children, were considered. 51 additional volunteers (office workers) were measured as controls.The volunteers wore the PEMs on their bodies. Those activities marked in the exposure diaries as work were further classified into 5 categories based on the level of certainty that they actually worked near children during that activity. Subsets of the full dataset were derived and compared based on this categorization.It was found that relaxation of the selection criteria often under- or overestimates exposure. The differences of estimation depend on the frequency band and sub-population: the kindergarten and teacher groups differ in this regard. For most frequency bands the majority of data points was below the detection limit. Derived child exposures are comparable to the worktime exposure of adults (control group).  相似文献

目的:研究寒冷对雌性C57BL/6小鼠动情周期的影响。方法:12只雌性小鼠随机分为对照组、低温组,每组6只;低温组每天4℃暴露4 h,每天阴道涂片法观察小鼠动情状况,对照组饲养于常温动物房;每2 d称量体重,2周后心脏取血、子宫和卵巢,检测小鼠血清E2、FSH、LH、Prl、P水平,进行子宫、卵巢的组织病理学检查。结果:与对照组比较,低温组小鼠体重无显著性差异(P>0.05),小鼠子宫脏器系数明显较低、动情间期明显延长(P<0.01),血清FSH显著升高、Prl显著降低(P<0.01),小鼠子宫腺管扩张,卵巢卵泡数量明显减少。结论:寒冷可使雌性C57BL/6小鼠动情周期延长,进而可能影响生殖功能。  相似文献

BackgroundThe immunotoxicity induced by vanadium exposure have been reported in some toxicology researches. However, evidence from population-based epidemiological studies was lacking.MethodsThis study was conducted to assess the associations between prenatal and postnatal exposure to vanadium and immune function of children. A total of 407 pre-school aged children were followed, whose peripheral blood was collected for T lymphocyte subsets and inflammatory cytokines analysis, as well as vanadium concentration measurement. Maternal urine samples were also collected to measure vanadium concentration. We used generalized linear models to evaluate the associations of maternal and children vanadium concentration with children’s immune function. Stratification analysis was further conducted to explore the potential gender-specific effects.ResultsThe geometric means of vanadium concentration in maternal urine and children plasma were 0.85 and 1.12 μg/L, respectively. Maternal urinary vanadium was inversely associated with the percentage of CD3+CD4+ cells [-5.53 % (-10.38 %, -0.41 %)] and absolute counts of CD3+ cells [-2.43 % (-5.05 %, 0.25 %)], and we only observed significant negative associations in males when stratifying by fetal gender. Children plasma vanadium was also associated with reduced absolute counts of CD3+ cells [-5.25 % (-9.57 %, -0.73 %)], but gender-specific effects were not observed. No significant associations of vanadium exposure with cytokines were found.ConclusionsPrenatal and postnatal exposure to vanadium had suppressive impacts on childhood cellular immune. Further studies are needed to confirm our findings.  相似文献

Personal radio frequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure, or exposimetry, is gaining importance in the bioelectromagnetics community but only limited data on personal exposure is available in indoor areas, namely schools, crèches, homes, and offices. Most studies are focused on adult exposure, whereas indoor microenvironments, where children are exposed, are usually not considered. A method to assess spatial and temporal indoor exposure of children and adults is proposed without involving the subjects themselves. Moreover, maximal possible daily exposure is estimated by combining instantaneous spatial and temporal exposure. In Belgium and Greece, the exposure is measured at 153 positions spread over 55 indoor microenvironments with spectral equipment. In addition, personal exposimeters (measuring EMFs of people during their daily activities) captured the temporal exposure variations during several days up to one week at 98 positions. The data were analyzed using the robust regression on order statistics (ROS) method to account for data below the detection limit. All instantaneous and maximal exposures satisfied international exposure limits and were of the same order of magnitude in Greece and Belgium. Mobile telecommunications and radio broadcasting (FM) were most present. In Belgium, digital cordless phone (DECT) exposure was present for at least 75% in the indoor microenvironments except for schools. Temporal variations of the exposure were mainly due to variations of mobile telecommunication signals. The exposure was higher during daytime than at night due to the increased voice and data traffic on the networks. Total exposure varied the most in Belgian crèches (39.3%) and Greek homes (58.2%).  相似文献
