Two marmosets imported from Iquitos, Peru, were found to be infected with Angiostrongylus costaricensis. Both animals had large solitary granulomas involving the wall and adjacent mesentery of the small intestine. Histopathologic examination showed the adult nematodes in the lumina of the mesenteric arteries that coursed through these granulomas. The inflammatory reaction was associated with numerous degenerating eggs and larvae. This is the first report of this parasite in nonhuman primates and extends its geographic range to Peru. In addition, in one animal, Dipetalonema sp were seen free in the abdominal cavity, and pleroceroid larvae (spargana) were in the loose connective tissue of the left axilla. This animal also had microgranulomas associated with eggs and larvae of Angiostrongylus in the kidney, liver, lung, and heart.  相似文献

Studies were conducted on the combined use of the eulophid parasitoid wasp Diglyphus begini Ashmead and the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) for control of the leafminer Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) on chrysanthemums. Several factors indicated that these two agents were suitable for combined use: adult D. begini were not susceptible to nematode infection, leafminer larvae parasitized by the wasp were less susceptible to nematode infection, adult wasps detected and tended to avoid ovipositing on nematode-infected leafminer larvae, nematode-infected larvae served as host-feeding sources for the adult wasps, and nematodes showed equal orientation toward paralyzed/parasitized leafminer larvae and healthy leafminer larvae. However, interspecific interference and intraguild predation (IGP) between the agents were found. Infection of D. begini larval stages by nematodes was seen in petri dishes and in intact leaf mines. The presence of nematodes in mines with wasp eggs decreased the chance of wasp survival to adulthood. IGP may be minimized through proper timing of natural enemy releases.  相似文献

This paper reports four fatal cases of metastrongylid nematode Angiostrongylus dujardini infection observed in a Saguinus oedipus and a Callimico goeldii monkey and in two suricates (Suricata suricatta). All animals were kept in captivity in a zoo of central Italy. The two monkeys died with no premonitory signs, while the two-month-old suricates showed malaise, anorexia and tachypnea for a few days prior to death. Cardiomegaly and/or granulomatous pneumonia were the major anatomo-pathological findings. Inflammatory lesions were observed in the liver, heart and kidney of the suricates at histology. A. dujardini diagnosis was confirmed through both morphological identification of adult worms recovered at necropsy and molecular characterization of larvae in tissue samples.Callitrichidae and suricates are active predators and maintain their hunting behaviour in captivity and it is then likely that they were exposed to infection by preying on parasitized gastropods, intermediate hosts of A. dujardini, entering zoo enclosures from the surrounding environment. This is the first report of A. dujardini in Italy and in S. suricatta.  相似文献

Raccoon roundworms (Baylisascaris procyonis) and other Baylisascaris species cause patent or latent larva migrans (LM) in a variety of mammals and birds, including humans. It is not clear whether LM by Baylisascaris transfuga, roundworms of bears, is associated with clinical neurological disorders. To clarify this issue, ICR and BALB/c mice as well as Mongolian jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) were orally inoculated with 2,000-5,000 embryonated eggs of B. transfuga. In mice, the ascarid caused symptomatic LM of limited extent and duration, whereas the infection was fatal in jirds; i.e., they exhibited general signs such as severe depression and emaciation on days 8-11 postinfection (PI) and died, or they developed progressive and fatal neurological disorders after day 14 PI. Histological examination showed B. transfuga larvae in the brain of all mice and jirds examined, and the larvae collected from them developed to a size comparable with that of B. procyonis. There existed, however, critical differences in host reactions against larvae localized in the brain of mice and jirds; B. transfuga larvae found in mice were surrounded by granulomatous reactions and immobilized, whereas larvae found in jirds were free from any host reaction and mobile, causing extensive malacia.  相似文献

In the present study, the initial developmental stage of Toxocara canis eggs and larvae, and number of recovered larvae from BALB/c mouse-infected organs are described. In vitro culture of T. canis detects the frequencies of interphasic, mitotic and embryonated eggs only within a 7-day period. Analysis by egg counting was carried out for 32 days. The results showed that at 7 days after cultivation, the frequency of larvae was 50.4% and that this frequency reached 52.8% in 32 days. In the experimental infection of BALB/c mice with T. canis, the number of recovered larvae statistically increased in the brain and liver, with doses of approximately 200 and 1000 eggs. After 7 days of infection, a larger number of larvae were obtained in the lung and liver, although a maximum amount was found in the brain after a 15- or 30-day post-infection period.  相似文献

From 1997 to 1999, we identified seven human cases of infection by fourth stage larvae of Pseudoterranova decipiens in Chile. All identified larvae were coughed up by the patients. Subjects were 10-55 years old; five were female. Some patients complained of coughing, expectoration, pharyngeal pain, nausea or anal and nasal pruritus. Larvae of three patients were coughed up from 36 h to 7 days after having eaten raw (cebiche or sushi) or lightly fried fish. P. decipiens has a marine life cycle. Infective third stage larva develop to adult stage in pinniped mammals. The nematode eggs are voided with the host faeces and develop and hatch releasing third stage larvae. Some crustaceans and fish act as hosts of third stage larvae. Man is an accidental host for third or fourth stage larvae.  相似文献

An examination of a sample of benthic invertebrates collected from the Upper San Marcos River in southwestern Texas, USA in September 1999 revealed that the nymph of the ephemeropteran Tricorythodes curvatus served as natural intermediate host of the nematode Rhabdochona kidderi texensis (Nematoda: Rhabdochonidae), an intestinal parasite mainly of the Rio Grande perch (Cichlasoma cyanoguttatum) in this locality; the prevalence of the parasite's third- and fourth-stage larvae in mayflies was 6.8% with the intensity of 1-2 larvae per nymph. Live R. kidderi texensis eggs collected from nematodes recovered from C. cyanoguttatum in Texas were transported to the Czech Republic, where they were used to experimentally infect nymphs of the palaearctic mayfly species Paraleptophlebia submarginata; the development of infective third- and fourth-stage larvae in this experimental intermediate host was completed after approximately 10 days at 19 degrees C. Infected nymphs were fed to aquarium-reared fishes, four Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum and one Oreochromis niloticus, of which only three of the former became infected. The last (fourth) moult of a male nematode was observed in C. nigrofasciatum 23 days p.i. and adult males and gravid females with not fully mature (non-embryonated) eggs in uteri on days 40 and 51 p.i. The prepatent period of R. kidderi texensis is approximately two months.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis, a nematode parasite in humans with free-living and autoinfective cycles, is often an asymptomatic infection of the upper small intestine. If the host becomes immunocompromised, autoinfection may increase the intestinal worm burden and lead to disseminated strongyloidiasis. The parthenogenetic adult female larvae can remain embedded in the mucosa of the small intestine for years, producing eggs that develop into either rhabditiform, noninfective larvae or filariform, infective larvae. Manifestations of dissemination occur when the filariform larvae penetrate the intestinal wall and migrate into the blood. Pulmonary involvement is common, and the central nervous system may be affected. Blood eosinophilia is typical, and gram-negative sepsis from enteric bacteria may occur. Much less commonly described is invasion of the peritoneal cavity with peritoneal effusion. CASE: A 49-year-old man who came to the United States from Liberia 4 years earlier presented with sudden onset of severe abdominal distention, generalized weakness and marked pedal edema. Diagnostic paracentesis showed numerous filariform larvae of S stercoralis. Stool examination confirmed the presence of both rhabditiform and filariform larvae. Subsequently the patient was found to be HIV seropositive, with a CD4 lymphocyte count of 59. CONCLUSION: Early detection of S stercoralis may alter the often-fatal course of infection. The present case is the second reported one in the English-language literature of the diagnosis of S stercoralis in ascitic fluid.  相似文献

Lambs which were given 60000 infective larvae of Nematodirus battus progressively threw off adult nematodes from day 20 onwards. Large, hexagonal crystals appeared in the intestine of the adult nematode at about this time and caused blockage of the intestinal-rectal or -cloacal junction. Lambs which were given 1000-2000 infective larvae did not throw off the infection, and adult nematodes from lambs which had been infected for up to 74 days did not contain these crystals. Chemical, histochemical and x-ray microanalysis tests on the crystals indicated that they are lipoprotein in composition. The crystals arise within the lumen of the nematode and appear to be associated with the development of immunity to this nematode in lambs.  相似文献

Female mice of 12 inbred strains were exposed to 20–25 cercariae of Schistosoma japonicum and infection status determined at day 40 by counting numbers of adult worms, eggs in faeces and eggs in a segment of liver. Most mouse strains appeared to be ‘permissive’ hosts although at least one strain (129/J) was shown to be relatively resistant in terms of day 40 adult worm numbers. In a radioisotopic lung assay for sensitivity to eggs, and developed as a rapid means of assessing granuloma formation, CBA/H mice were shown to differ from C57BL/6 mice in being non-responders. Histological examination of lungs of sensitized CBA/H and C57BL/6 mice injected intravenously with eggs established that granuloma formation was much more intense in C57BL/6 than CBA/H mice. Preliminary indications are that infected CBA/H mice are also low anti egg circumoval precipitin (COP) responders. Analysis of immune responses to isolated egg antigens in these two strains, and identification of the antigens of eggs to which such responses are directed in C57BL/6 mice, should provide insights into immunological disease processes (such as granulomatous inflammation) in this model system of japonicum schistosomiasis.  相似文献

This note describes the sudden death of a dog by the rupture of the thoracic aorta caused by the presence of Angiostrongylus vasorum. A female mongrel canine with a history of weight loss and exhaustion died two hours after clinical examination. At necropsy, performed one hour after death, showed the presence of clotted blood in the thoracic cavity. Haemothorax was diagnosed. The thoracic aorta wall was thin, congested and an abnormal hole in the wall was detected approximately 0.5 cm from the entrance to the diaphragm. From clotted blood collected from the thoracic cavity, 224 first stage larvae (L1) and 15 adults of Angiostrongylus vasorum were recovered alive. Also, from a blood clot found in the aorta, four adult females and 47 L1 larvae were recovered alive. Possibly, this parasite was responsible for the aortic rupture and death of the animal.  相似文献

Rabbits infected either orally or intratracheally with cell culture-grown Encephalitozoon cuniculi were monitored regularly for serum antibody levels and E. cuniculi in the urine. Their responses were compared with intravenously inoculated and uninoculated control rabbits. All rabbits receiving E. cuniculi developed serum antibodies, generally within 3 weeks, and excreted E. cuniculi by 6 weeks. In the acute stage of infection, the organs most affected were lung, kidney and liver; the brain and gut were unaffected. However, during chronic infection, the brain, kidney, and heart were the only organs found to be involved. Antibody levels were very high at this stage. Thus both the oral and tracheal routes may be normal routes of infection with E. cuniculi in adult rabbits.  相似文献

Infective larvae of Dioctophyma renale were found in the hypaxial musculature of pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus L.) from three lakes in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada. This represents the first report of D. renale in centrarchid fish. In the three lakes surveyed prevalence and mean intensity ranged from 5 to 23% and one to two larvae respectively. Larvae elicited a mild granulomatous reaction in pumpkinseed. Two ferrets were each given five larvae from pumpkinseed. Adult D. renale were recovered from the right kidney capsule of ferrets 108 and 134 days post-infection. An opening in the ventral surface of the right kidney capsule was present in one ferret. Chronic peritonitis was associated with eggs of D. renale and cellular debris which probably entered the abdominal cavity from the right kidney capsule.  相似文献

A case of systemic mycosis due to a Rhizopus sp. infection is described in a dead-stranded, 10-yr-old, male harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) found on the beach of Neustadt, Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea (Germany). At necropsy, granulomatous mycotic lesions in brain, lung, kidneys, testis, and draining lymph nodes were found. In addition, a focal ulcerative gastritis of the first stomach, due to a nematode infection, was present and is suspected to be the portal of entry for the fungus.  相似文献

Factors influencing lung IgA antibody responses to Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infections and the role of lung and fecal IgA antibodies in immunity to this nematode were studied in rats. Hooded Lister rats were vaccinated subcutaneously with infective larvae radio-attenuated at 80-180 kr or with a single dose of infective larvae somatic proteins administered intravenously or intragastrically, and then challenged 14 days later with normal larvae. It was found that optimal lung IgA antibody responses depended more on the duration of the antigenic stimulation than on the quantity of antigenic material present, although a threshold amount was required. However, comparisons of lung anti-larval IgA antibody levels in rats resistant or susceptible to challenge indicated that these antibodies were not directly involved in specific host protective immunity. Levels of haemagglutinating fecal antibodies reacting with adult nematode metabolites were correlated with the numbers of adult worms recovered from the intestines following vaccination and also with the degree of resistance to reinfection. However, preincubation of adult (day 5) nematodes in media containing the IgA fraction of fecal globulins from primary infected rats did not reduce the ability of these worms to establish and survive in naive rats.  相似文献

Experimental infection of mice with Toxocara canis provides one of the best models for immunological and pathological studies of the visceral larva migrans syndrome. Blood eosinophilia, the migratory behaviour of second stage larvae and granuloma formation were studied in Swiss mice infected with Toxocara canis. Eosinophilia, spleen, liver and lung indexes were followed during a primary infection with different inoculum sizes (500 and 1500 eggs) while the migratory behaviour of larvae was studied in a primary infection with 1500 eggs over a period of 4 months. In mice infected with three challenges of 1500 eggs in order to elicit a strong inflammatory reaction in the tissues, a histopathological study was carried out. The results showed that eosinophilia, spleen and lung indexes (but not the liver index) were influenced by the parasite inoculum size. The migratory behaviour study showed that larval recovery was maximal three days post-infection, from the liver and lungs; the peak recovery from the skeletal muscles and brain being on days 15 and 30 post-infection, respectively. The histopathological study revealed the formation of granulomas in all the tissues examined (liver, lungs, kidneys, spleen, lymph nodes, myocardium etc.) but not in nervous tissue or in the retina of the eye. Granulomas in the lungs were larger than those found in the liver. The implications of these results are discussed considering host-parasite inter-relations.  相似文献

Daubaylia potomaca is a parasitic nematode that exhibits a direct life cycle using planorbid snails as their only host. Within the snail host Helisoma anceps , all developmental stages of the parasite are present at any given time. The nematode has an unusual life cycle, with the adult female being the infective stage rather than the third-stage larvae (L(3)), as is commonly the case in many other parasitic nematode life cycles. In addition, length analysis showed that L(1) and L(2) were not present in tissues, suggesting that larvae hatch from eggs as the L(3). Previous studies by other investigators show that adult females abandon Biomphalaria glabrata at some point between 3 and 9 days of host death; in the present study, adult female D. potomaca leave H. anceps up to 59 days (and a mean of 14.8 days) before host death. This observation indicates a striking physiological difference between an experimental and a natural host for the parasite.  相似文献
