The crypts outside St Bride's Church, London, contain a documented collection of skeletal remains dating from the mid-18th century. Some of these remains became mixed during post-war restoration work on the church. The worst example of such mixing involves ten infants that were boxed all together with their corresponding coffin plates. All the infants were aged between 1 and 4 years at death. Recognized skeletal aging criteria proved unsuccessful in identifying the bodies. A more precise method of age estimation was utilized in order to separate these individuals. Age was determined using the incremental markers found in dental microstructure which are thought to be formed in circadian and circaseptan rhythms. The resulting age estimates were compared with the real ages obtained from the coffin plates and death certificates. Confident identification was achieved in eight out of ten cases. This study illustrates the potential value of a little-known aging method in circumstances where commonly used methods have proved unsuccessful. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Fragmentary human remains compromised by different types of inhumation, or physical insults such as explosions, fires, and mutilations may frustrate the use of traditional morphognostic sex determination methods. The basicranium is protected by a large soft tissue mass comprising muscle, tendon, and ligaments. As such, the occipital region may prove useful for sex identification in cases of significantly fragmented remains. The aims of this paper are to (1) evaluate sexual dimorphism in British cranial bases by manually recorded unilateral and bilateral condylar length and width as well as intercondylar measurements and (2) develop discriminant functions for sex determination for this cranial sample. The crania selected for this study are part of the 18th-19th century documented skeletal collection of St. Bride's Church, Fleet Street, London. Adult human skulls (n = 146; male75/female71) were measured to derive statistical functions. Results indicated that expression of sexual dimorphism in the occipital condylar region within the St. Bride's population is demonstrable but low. Crossvalidated classification accuracy ranged between 69.2 and 76.7%, and sex bias ranged from 0.3 to 9.7%. Therefore, the use of discriminant functions derived from occipital condyles, especially in British skeletal populations, should only be considered in cases of fragmented cranial bases when no other morphognostic or morphometric method can be utilized for sex determination.  相似文献

This study presents results and recommendations arising from a blind test of the revised age estimation method for the auricular surface as proposed by Buckberry and Chamberlain ([2002] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 119:321-329). Auricular surfaces of 167 individuals from St. Bride's, London, a documented skeletal assemblage spanning the late 17th to early 19th century, were analyzed for the following traits: transverse organization, surface texture appearance, macroporosity, microporosity, and morphological changes to the apex. Composite scores of trait expressions were found to generally correlate with age and to show a positive association with known chronological age (P < 0.01). However, when composite scores were combined to define auricular surface phases, which ultimately assign age estimations, only three distinct developmental stages, compared with seven suggested by Buckberry and Chamberlain ([2002] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 119:321-329), could be identified and statistically supported, all showing a considerable degree of individual variation in age. The most well-defined stage in the St. Bride's assemblage was the new stage III, where the majority of individuals were older than 60 years, whereas middle-aged adults displayed a large variation in composite scores. These results provide little hope for a promising application of age-at-death estimation of auricular surface morphology traits with higher resolution, but rather suggest indications of broad stages of life.  相似文献

The Bang and Ramm method uses root dentine translucency (RDT) length in sectioned or unsectioned teeth as a sole indicator of chronological age at death in adult human remains. The formulae have been tested on modern remains of known age and on modern and archaeological remains of unknown age. This is the first published study of the method on known‐age archaeological specimens and tests whether RDT is a good indicator of chronological age in buried human remains. We applied the Bang and Ramm equations to two 18th and 19th century assemblages excavated from the crypt of Christ Church, Spitalfields, and the cemetery of All Hallows by the Tower. Translucency was defined by shining a light through the external unsectioned root surface and was measured from digital images of 583 and 83 nonmolar roots from 126 Spitalfields and 12 All Hallows individuals, respectively, aged 21–81 years. Average absolute difference between real age and estimated age was 10.7 years and 8.4 years for Spitalfields and All Hallows individuals, respectively, with 58% and 75% estimated within 10 years of known age, and 29% and 33% estimated within five years of known age. These estimations are comparable to results from other ageing methods applied to the Spitalfields collection. Ages from both populations were estimated largely to the middle ranges, with younger individuals overestimated and older individuals underestimated. This is a common occurrence when using inverse calibration, where age is treated as the dependent variable and the ageing feature as the independent variable. Ancient cemeteries are often characterized by a considerable number of infants and young children. Sex differences in childhood mortality, however, could rarely be studied up to now, mainly because there were only few proven traits for sexual determination of immature skeletons. Based on a historic sample of sixty-one children of known sex and age from Spitalfields, London (37 boys, 24 girls), sexually distinctive traits in the mandible and ilium are presented for morphognostic diagnosis. Besides other features, boys typically show a more prominent chin, an anteriorly wider dental arcade, and a narrower and deeper sciatic notch than girls. Most of the traits presented in this study allow individuals between birth and five years of age to be successfully allocated to either sex in 70–90% of the cases. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The Chilean jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi) is a predominantly Southeast Pacific Ocean species. It is relatively difficult to determine its age, and multiple studies of its growth off South America have produced markedly different sets of von Bertalanffy parameters. T. murphyi was first identified from New Zealand waters in the mid-1980s and has comprised part of the commercial landings of Trachurus species (along with Trachurus declivis and Trachurus novaezelandiae) since then. Results from 13 years of age determination of New Zealand samples using sectioned otoliths indicate that a partially validated age determination method has been developed, with a precision level (average percentage error) of 4.6%. The best available von Bertalanffy growth parameters for the New Zealand population (sexes combined) are as follows: L, 51.9 cm fork length; K, 0.223 per year; t0, −0.5 year. Analyses by sex showed that males have a significantly larger L than females. Estimated annual catch-at-length and catch-at-age distributions from the fishery are presented for 2007–2019. There have been at least two episodes of immigration of T. murphyi from international waters, but little evidence of spawning success to maintain the New Zealand population.  相似文献

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a spectrum of disease starting in childhood and in many cases persisting into adulthood. The spectrum ranges from acetabular dysplasia, through hip subluxation to dislocation. The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence and pathoanatomy of acetabular dysplasia and subluxation in excavated human skeletal remains, to complement past research on dislocation in DDH. The material under study was the medieval cemetery of St. Mary Spital in London, in use from c.1100 to 1539 AD. A series of 572 adults with both hips preserved were analyzed. Acetabular dysplasia was indicated by a shallow acetabulum with upward sloping roof. Subluxation was suggested by degenerative change along the margin of the acetabulum suggestive of labral tears, and degenerative change in the outer part of the acetabular roof suggestive of osteoarthritis. The prevalence of DDH (acetabular dysplasia, subluxation, or dislocation) was 1.7%. Because this a congenital musculoskeletal disorder of relatively high frequency, with significant variation in prevalence between populations around the world, it is a topic that warrants targeted research from physical anthropologists studying past populations.  相似文献

The effect of the pH of the mobile phase in HPLC analysis of hyperforin was investigated. Working with an extract of St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) that is rich in hyperforin, significant differences were observed in conventional chromatograms depending on whether the mobile phase was acidic or alkaline. Chromatogram changes were paralleled by changes in the UV spectrum of the hyperforin peak. The structural changes in hyperforin occur in the chromatographic column itself, as has been confirmed by UV spectroscopy performed on a sample of purified hyperforin, which showed that the UV spectrum is indeed dependent on the pH of its environment.  相似文献

Seeds of Hypericum perforatum and H. tetrapterum were extracted with dichloromethane and methanol and investigated by chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods. Both species yielded a fatty oil fraction amounting to 30.5% and 18.0% of the seed weight, respectively. Linoleic acid (C18:2n‐6) was shown to be the predominant fatty acid constituent. Moreover, xanthone derivatives, i.e. tetrahydroxyxanthones (THX), xanthone‐glycosides and xanthone‐sulfonates, were assigned in methanolic extracts. For structure elucidation, one representative xanthone, namely 1,3,6,7‐THX, was synthesized and analyzed via HPLC‐DAD/MSn and GC/MS. Total THX contents were quantitated applying a validated HPLC‐DAD method, resulting in 1.25 g/kg (H. perforatum) and 0.27 g/kg (H. tetrapterum), respectively. Moreover, the free radical scavenging capacity of the methanol extracts was tested using the DPPH antioxidant assay. Both, H. perforatum (IC50 = 8.7 mg/l) and 1,3,6,7‐THX (IC50 = 3.0 mg/l), exhibited good DPPH free radical scavenging activity compared to Trolox (IC50 = 6.6 mg/l).  相似文献

Life history parameters were estimated for Dall's porpoise, Phocoenoides dalli, from biological specimens collected in the western Aleutian Islands, during 1981–1987. Of 2,033 males and 3,566 females examined, reproductive data were available for 1,941 males and 1,906 females; ages were determined for 813 males and 1,297 females. Female sexual maturity was based on the presence of one or more corpus on either ovary; 845 were sexually immature and 1,061 were sexually mature. Two estimates of female average age at sexual maturity (ASM) were 3.8 and 4.4 yr; average length at sexual maturity (LSM) was 172 cm. Males were considered sexually mature when evidence of spermatogenesis was detected; 1,136 were sexually immature and 805 were sexually mature. Two estimates of male ASM were 4.5 and 5.0 yr; LSM was 179.7 cm. Physical maturity was assessed for 246 males and 446 females by examining the degree of fusion in thoracic vertebral epiphyses. For both sexes, the average age at physical maturity was 7.2 yr. Average length at physical maturity was 202.6 cm for males and 192.7 cm for females. Average lengths of physically mature males (x?= 198.1 cm, SE = 0.8566) and females (x?= 189.7 cm, SE = 0.4002) were significantly different(P < 0.0001). Early postnatal growth was rapid in both sexes. A secondary growth spurt in both mass and length was characteristic for both sexes; the increase in length preceded the mass increase by 1–2 yr. Average length at birth (LOB) was approximately 100 cm; birth mass averaged 11.3 kg (SE = 0.0772). By the time the umbilicus had healed (<2 mo), the average length and mass had increased to 114.1 cm and 23.8 kg, respectively. Gestation period based on projections using LOB was 12 mo, but this was considered an overestimate. Calving was modal, centered in early July; an annual reproductive interval was indicated. Among the sexually mature females, 120 were pregnant, 55 were pregnant and lactating, 321 were pregnant with colostrum, and 33 were “resting.” By 3 July (95% CI =x? 1 d), 50% of births had occurred, during each of the seven years sampled. The ovulation rate was estimated at 0.914 ovulations per average reproductive year. Enlarged follicles and recent ovulations were observed in postpartum females in late July.  相似文献

An initial incubation of dog thyroid slices with 0.1 or 1 microM acetylcholine (ACH) for at least 2 h decreases its subsequent stimulation of [1-14C]glucose oxidation. Refractoriness persists for as long as 6 h in the absence of ACH. While new protein synthesis is essential for recovery, it is not necessary for its induction. Refractoriness is prevented when 25 microM tropicamide, an atropine-like drug, is present from the beginning of the initial incubation, but not when it is added after 2 h of incubation of slices with ACH, indicating that at this time ACH is no longer necessary for refractoriness. During refractoriness induced by ACH, stimulation of glucose oxidation by thyroid-stimulating hormone, prostaglandin E1, dibutyryl cyclic AMP, and cholera toxin, but not menadiol, is also significantly diminished. Incubation of thyroid slices with ACH does not modify its stimulation of iodide organification or 32Pi incorporation into phospholipids. These results suggest that the desensitization is not due to changes in the ACH receptor but rather to intracellular metabolic effects. This phenomenon may be important in the regulation of cholinergic effects on the thyroid.  相似文献

Abstract

The development of in vitro regeneration systems for Hypericum perforatum var. angustifolium (sin. Fröhlich) Borkh, a medicinal plant used for treating neurological disorders, is described. For the first time in this variety, somatic embryogenesis and shoot regeneration were induced from leaf-derived callus. Well-formed plantlets were obtained through both shoot regeneration and somatic embryogenesis, with separate morphogenetic programmes. Proembryogenic masses were obtained in liquid MS and B5 media supplemented with 5.8 μM 2,4-D, 1.34 μM NAA, and 1.16 μM Kin; after being transferred onto hormone-free medium, they formed whitish and spherical structures that subsequently developed into the heart and torpedo stages.

On MS agarized medium containing thidiazuron (TDZ) at different concentrations (3, 6, 9, 12 μM) combined with 2 μM IBA, only shoot regeneration, and not somatic embryogenesis, was obtained. The mean number of shoots increased significantly when the concentration of TDZ was 3 μM.  相似文献

A revised method for estimating adult age at death using the auricular surface of the ilium has been developed. It is based on the existing auricular surface aging method of Lovejoy et al. ([1985] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 68:15-28), but the revised technique is easier to apply, and has low levels of inter- and intraobserver error. The new method records age-related stages for different features of the auricular surface, which are then combined to provide a composite score from which an estimate of age at death is obtained. Blind tests of the method were carried out on a known-age skeletal collection from Christ Church, Spitalfields, London. These tests showed that the dispersion of age at death for a given morphological stage was large, particularly after the first decade of adult life. Statistical analysis showed that the age-related changes in auricular surface are not significantly different for males and females. The scores from the revised method have a slightly higher correlation with age than do the Suchey-Brooks pubic symphysis stages. Considering the higher survival rates of the auricular surface compared with the pubic symphysis, this method promises to be useful for biological anthropology and forensic science.  相似文献

Botanical extracts of Hypericum perforatum L. (common St. John's Wort) are used in the USA and in Europe as a treatment for mild to moderate depression, although controversy surrounds the identity of the active constituent(s). RP-HPLC with photodiode array detection was used to separate and quantify nine compounds of pharmacological interest in extracts from 74 taxa of Hypericum native to the Old and New World. Chemical profiles of these constituents may be used to distinguish extracts of H. perforatum from those of other species of Hypericum, and to indicate species that may be of interest for further phytochemical investigation.  相似文献

Objectives: The ongoing controversial discussion about a possible negative effect of amalgam fillings on the cognitive abilities and the pathogenesis dementia was the objective of the present study. Sample: A total of 300 patients aged from 70 to 103 years were selected from the multidisciplinary ‘Berlin Aging Study’ (Base). The sample was heterogeneous concerning lifestyle, education and social prestige. According to their dental state subjects were allocated into three groups: edentate ≥20 years (I) and residual teeth without (II) or with (III) amalgam restorations. All groups were matched for age and gender. Design: Dental examinations and various psychiatric as well as psychological assessments were carried out by professionals within the protocol of the BASE. Tests were chosen to reveal the presence and degree of dementia and assess cognitive abilities such as ‘perceptual speed’, ‘reasoning’, ‘memory’, ‘fluency’ and ‘knowledge’. Results: The present findings negate a correlation between the dental state and the pathogenesis of dementia and the physiological age‐related decline in cognitive abilities. Thus the presence of amalgam fillings did neither correlate to a demented mental condition nor an impaired cognitive performance.  相似文献

Cytochrome oxidase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been crystallized from 2 m-ammonium sulfate. The crystals occur principally as thin diamond-shaped plates of space group P21212 with unit cell dimensions of 92 Å × 115 Å × 76 Å. Determination of the density of glutaraldehyde-fixed, water-equilibrated crystals (1.167 g/cm3), coupled with the unit cell volume (804,000 Å3), indicates that there is one subunit (~63,000 Mr) per asymmetric unit. X-ray diffraction data which were limited to 12 Å resolution due to small crystal size were obtained for the hk0 and 0kl zones using precession photography. Amplitude and phase data for the hk0, 0kl, and h0l zones were obtained from computer-based Fourier analysis of appropriate micrographs recorded from negatively stained microplates and thin sections of larger crystals using minimal beam electron microscopy. For crystals embedded in the presence of tannic acid it was possible to achieve 20 Å resolution which is comparable to the resolution achieved with negative staining of thin crystalline arrays. In addition, unstained electron diffraction on glutaraldehyde-fixed, glucose-stabilized plates was recorded to a resolution of 9 Å. The three-dimensional packing of the cytochrome oxidase dimer in the unit cell has been deduced from computer reconstructed images of the three principal projections along the crystallographic axes. The cytochrome oxidase dimer is located in the unit cell with the dimer axis coincident with a crystallographic 2-fold axis; thus within the resolution of the present data in projection (9 Å) the two subunits are identical, in agreement with biochemical evidence. The crystals have been prepared with the enzyme in the fully oxidized state and upon reduction a progressive cracking of the crystals is observed, possibly due to a conformational change dependent on the oxidation state of the heme iron.  相似文献

According to a debated hypothesis, the biosynthesis from emodin of the medicinally important natural compound hypericin is catalyzed in St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) by the phenolic oxidative‐coupling protein Hyp‐1. Recombinant St John's wort Hyp‐1 has been overexpressed in Escherichia coli and obtained in single‐crystal form. The crystals belong to the orthorhombic system, space group P212121, with unit‐cell parameters a = 37.5, b = 76.7, c = 119.8 Å, contain two protein molecules in the asymmetric unit and diffract X‐rays to 1.73 Å resolution.  相似文献

Whether or not biogeographic rules dealing with spatial patterns of animal body sizes are valid for ectotherms is controversial. As the ectotherms grow all their lives, we explored the role of age and annual growth rate in body size variation in Phrynocephalus przewalskii in northern China. Morphological data were collected from 11 populations across a broad geographic gradient. Correlations between age, sex, climatic factors, and body size were analyzed using generalized linear model (GLM) and generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). GLM analysis indicated that the general body size of both sexes and the appendage size of females increased significantly with increasing temperature; however, the coefficient of determination was very small. GLMM analysis indicated that body size only correlated with age, whereas appendage size was affected by age, temperature, rainfall, and sunshine. Annual growth rates were positively correlated with temperature. We concluded that body size variation was mainly caused by age structure and plasticity of the growth rate in P. przewalskii and did not follow Bergmann''s rule; however, females followed Allen''s rule. Future studies to investigate the effect of energy restriction are needed to further understand the relationship between growth rate and body size. We also suggest that further studies on thermal advantage and sexual selection may be helpful to understand appendage size variation in P. przewalskii.  相似文献

As the global burden of mental illness is estimated to become a severe issue in the near future, it demands the development of more effective treatments. Most psychiatric diseases are moderately to highly heritable and believed to involve many genes. Development of new treatment options demands more knowledge on the molecular basis of psychiatric diseases. Toward this end, we propose to develop new statistical methods with improved sensitivity and accuracy to identify disease‐related genes specialized for psychiatric diseases. The qualitative psychiatric diagnoses such as case control often suffer from high rates of misdiagnosis and oversimplify the disease phenotypes. Our proposed method utilizes endophenotypes, the quantitative traits hypothesized to underlie disease syndromes, to better characterize the heterogeneous phenotypes of psychiatric diseases. We employ the structural equation modeling using the liability‐index model to link multiple genetically regulated expressions from PrediXcan and the manifest variables including endophenotypes and case‐control status. The proposed method can be considered as a general method for multivariate regression, which is particularly helpful for psychiatric diseases. We derive penalized retrospective likelihood estimators to deal with the typical small sample size issue. Simulation results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method and the real data analysis of Alzheimer's disease illustrates the practical utility of the techniques. We present a Monte-Carlo simulation analysis of the statistical properties of absolute genetic distance and of Nei's minimum and standard genetic distances. The estimation of distances (bias) and of their variances is analysed as well as the distributions of distance and variance estimators, taking into account both gamete and locus samplings. Both of Nei's statistics are non-linear when distances are small and consequently the distributions of their estimators are extremely asymmetrical. It is difficult to find theoretical laws that fit such asymmetrical distributions. Absolute genetic distance is linear and its distributions are better fit by a normal distribution. When distances are medium or large, minimum distance and absolute distance distributions are close to a normal distribution, but those of the standard distance can never be considered as normal. For large distances the jack-knife estimator of the standard distance variance is bad; another standard distance estimator is suggested. Absolute distance, which has the best mathematical properties, is particularly interesting for small distances if the gamete sample size is large, even when the number of loci is small. When both distance and gamete sample size are small, this statistic is biased.  相似文献
