The supralittoral amphipod Talitrus saltator is well known for its capacity for astronomical orientation using the sun and moon as compasses. It has also been demonstrated that the sun compass is innate in this species. In our experiments, we released inexpert (naive) young born in the laboratory into a confined environment under the full moon and in the absence of the horizontal component of the magnetic field. They were allowed to see the natural sky and the moon only at the moment of release. The young individuals were obtained in the laboratory by crossing adult individuals from the same and different populations of sandhoppers. The young from intrapopulation crosses were well oriented towards the directions corresponding to those of their parents, whereas the young from interpopulation crosses were oriented in an intermediate direction. Therefore, our experiments demonstrate in the sandhopper T. saltator that sea-land moon orientation relies on an innate chronometrically compensated mechanism. 相似文献

- 1.1. Metabolic rates were measured in two xeric-adapted gekkonid lizards, Anarbylus switaki sind Coleonyx variegatus.
- 2.2. Standard metabolic rates (SMR) were 0.074 ml O2/g hr in A. switaki and were 70% of the value predicted on the basis of mass from regression equations. The SMR of 0.146ml O2/ghr in C. variegatus is similar to the predicted value for a lizard of this mass.
- 3.3. During intense activity, metabolic rates of 0.378 and 0.804ml O2/g hr were measured in A. switaki and C. variegatus, respectively.
- 4.4. Various theories to explain reduced SMR in lizards are discussed, and it is concluded that none is entirely satisfactory, and caution should be exercised in interpreting the adaptive significance of reduced SMR.

A leukemia characterized by the proliferation of undifferentiated hematopoietic stem cells is described from a desert spiny lizard (Sceloporus magister). This is the first neoplasm reported from this species and the first leukemia from the family Iguanidae. A massive invasion of primitive hematopoietic cells was noted in the vascular system and heart muscle. Spleen, bone marrow, lungs, adrenal gland, pancreas, brain, skin, testes, liver, lamina propria and submucosa of intestines were extensively involved. Tissue-fixed mast cells were noted in the kidney and intestinal submucosa but were not participating in the neoplastic proliferation. 相似文献

Summary The endocrine pancreas of the desert lizard (Chalcides ocellatus) was investigated histologically and immunocytochemically. The endocrine tissue was concentrated in the dorsal lobe, where it constituted about 7% of the total volume. In the ventral lobe the endocrine tissue formed approximately 1% of the total volume. Four endocrine cell types were observed in the pancreas of this species, namely insulin-, glucagon-, somatostain- and pancreatic polypeptide (PP)-immunoreactive cells. The volume occupied by these cells was 1, 1, 0.6 and 0.3% of the total volume of the pancreas, respectively. Insulin-immunoreactive cells were located in the islet centre and comprised 3% of dorsal and 0.2% of the ventral lobe volume. Glucagon cells occurred at the islet periphery and amounted to 3 and 0.2% of the volume of the dorsal and ventral lobes, respectively. Somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were located at the islet periphery as well as in between the exocrine parenchyma. They constituted 1 and 0.2% of the volume of the dorsal and ventral lobes, respectively. PP-immunoreactive cells occurred mainly among the exocrine parenchyma as solitary cells. They formed only 0.03% of the volume of the dorsal lobe. The corresponding figure in the ventral lobe was 0.6%. 相似文献

1. This project seeks to identify determinants of the variation observed in the foraging behavior of predatory animals, especially in moonlight, using a lizard as a model. 2. Moonlight generally enhances the foraging efficiency of nocturnal visual predators and often depresses the locomotor activity of prey animals. Previous evidence has indicated for three different nocturnal species of smallish gecko lizards that they respond to moonlight by increasing their activity. 3. In this study some aspects of the foraging activity of the somewhat larger nocturnal psammophilous Teratoscincus scincus, observed near Repetek and Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, were significantly depressed by moonlight, while several confounding factors (sex, maturity, size, sand temperature, hour, prior handling and observer effect) were taken into account. 4. This behavioral difference may relate to the eye size of the various species. 5. Additionally, a novel method of analyzing foraging behavior shows that in this species the duration of moves increases the duration of subsequent stationary pauses. Measurement of locomotor speed, yielding an average speed of 220% of the maximum aerobic speed, indicates a need for these pauses. Secondarily, pause duration decreases the duration of subsequent moves, precluding escalation of move duration. 6. The results of this and related projects advocate the taking into account of physiological and environmental factors that may affect an animal's foraging behavior. 相似文献

Using video cameras and motion detection software, we examined sequential positions of the lizard Podarcis carbonelli in a temperature gradient to look for patterns in spatial and temporal thermoregulatory movements. As lizards shuttled between warm and cool areas, their movements were typically slow; punctuated by bursts of speed. The animals were relatively inactive when heating, moved almost continually when cooling, and spent less time heating than cooling. Traditional modeling techniques proved unsuccessful, so we assessed the movement patterns with nonlinear dynamical techniques. The shuttling frequency, and the pattern of velocity changes, both met the qualitative attributes (self similarity, strange attractors, and noisy power spectra) and the quantitative criteria (positive Lyapunov exponent and capacity and/or correlation dimensions less than 5) that suggest deterministic chaos. These movement patterns appear regular, but at unpredictable times the patterns become disturbed before returning to regulation. There are both behavioral and physiological advantages to movements that follow a model of deterministic chaos control. 相似文献

Conspicuous color displays in animals are often studied in the context of how they communicate an individual's reproductive value, ability to escape capture, or overall health. The study of sexual dichromatism often focuses on the evolution of male display traits balanced between detectability and mate acquisition, representing constraints stemming from both natural and sexual selection. Melanistic coloration and melanin color patterns play important roles in both intraspecific and interspecific signaling in animals; as melanin serves multiple purposes in organismal biology, the evolution of melanin-based visual displays might not be restricted to a single behavioral or ecological context. Here, we examine the behavioral contexts of the conspicuous melanin-based tail display in the greater earless lizard (Cophosaurus texanus), asking if this melanized tail pattern is associated with (a) female association preference of males varying in the concentration of melanin, (b) individual locomotor performance capacity, and (c) thermal ecology. We found the amount of tail melanin is linked with both locomotor performance and female association preference, with greater concentrations of melanin predicting the evolution of faster performance capacities and females preferring males with more discrete melanin bars. We found limited support that differences in melanin are linked with thermoregulation or thermal ecology. Overall, we find that multiple behavioral contexts shape the evolution of this melanized display trait. We conclude that behavioral constraints stemming from both natural and sexual selection can interact synergistically to favor the evolution and expression of a melanistic visual display, even in potentially costly ecological contexts. 相似文献

Study of the histology and ultrastructure of the testes of Scorpaena notata reveals some unusual features in the most basic form of oviparity, termed ovuliparity. Distribution of spermatogonia and subsequent stages of development are consistent with an intermediate type of testes, somewhere between the restricted and unrestricted types. Spermatogenesis is semicystic, a feature rarely found in fish, which may account for the high vacuole count found both in the various spermatogenic phases and in the Sertoli cells. Sertoli cells cover the interior of the testicular lobes and have an initial phase of secretion. They go on to penetrate the lobular lumen and become phagosomes. The spermatozoon has a relatively long midpiece and is surrounded by large quantities of seminal fluid. The sperm makes its way from the central sperm duct to a series of peripheral ducts, where the sperm line up with their heads toward the epithelium and their tails toward the lumen. All indications are that this orientation facilitates the release of sperm onto the gelatinous mass of eggs, and that this could be linked to this type of semicystic spermatogenesis. Results obtained confirm that S. notata is a specialized ovuliparous species. 相似文献

The structure of the granulosa in reptilian sauropsids varies between groups. We investigated the follicle development in the desert lizard Scincus mitranus. In the germinal bed, oogonia, and primary oocytes were identified and found to be interspersed between the epithelial cells. Previtellogenesis was divided into three stages: early, transitional, and late previtellogenic stages. During the early previtellogenic stage (diplotene), the oocyte is invested by small epithelia cells that formed a complete single layer, which may be considered as a young follicle. The transitional previtellogenic stage was marked by proliferation and differentiation of the granulosa layer from a homogenous layer consisting of only small cells to a heterogeneous layer containing three cell types: small, intermediate, and large cells. The late previtellogenic stage was marked by high-synthetic activity of large cells and the initiation of cytoplasmic bridges between large granulosa cells and the oocyte. Small cells were the only type of granulosa cells that underwent division. Thus, these cells may be stem cells for the granulosa cell population and may develop into intermediate and subsequently large cells. The intermediate cells may be precursors of large cells, as suggested by their ultrastructure. The ultrastructure of the large granulosa was indicative of their high synthetic activity. Histochemical analysis indicated the presence of cholesterol and phospholipids in the cytoplasm of large cells, the zona pellucida, among the microvilli, in the bridges region, and in the cortical region of the oocyte cytoplasm. These materials may be transferred from large cells into the oocyte through cytoplasmic bridges and provide nutritive function to large cells rather than functioning in steroidogenesis or vitellogenesis. 相似文献

Social aggregation is a common behavioral phenomenon thought to evolve through adaptive benefits to group living. Comparing fitness differences between aggregated and solitary individuals in nature - necessary to infer an evolutionary benefit to living in groups - has proven difficult because communally-living species tend to be obligately social and behaviorally complex. However, these differences and the mechanisms driving them are critical to understanding how solitary individuals transition to group living, as well as how and why nascent social systems change over time. Here we demonstrate that facultative aggregation in a reptile (the Desert Night Lizard, Xantusia vigilis) confers direct reproductive success and survival advantages and that thermal benefits of winter huddling disproportionately benefit small juveniles, which can favor delayed dispersal of offspring and the formation of kin groups. Using climate projection models, however, we estimate that future aggregation in night lizards could decline more than 50% due to warmer temperatures. Our results support the theory that transitions to group living arise from direct benefits to social individuals and offer a clear mechanism for the origin of kin groups through juvenile philopatry. The temperature dependence of aggregation in this and other taxa suggests that environmental variation may be a powerful but underappreciated force in the rapid transition between social and solitary behavior. 相似文献

Subterranean rodents are often considered as ecosystem engineers because they physically modify the surrounding environment due to their burrowing and foraging activities. Understanding the modifications that ecosystem engineering species exert on the environment are of crucial importance in ecology studies, since they may affect the structure and population dynamics of several species, including lizards. Thus, the objective of the present study is to test the effect that Ctenomys mendocinus exert in the abundance of Liolaemus ruibali and its escape behaviour, in a high-elevation desert. Lizard abundance was estimated using observation transects and escape behaviour was studied with an experiment where the observer was considered by lizards as a potential predator and distance before the lizard flees was measured. All the variables were compared between areas disturbed by C. mendocinus and undisturbed ones. We found that L. ruibali was favoured by C. mendocinus activity. By creating burrow systems that serve as refuges for lizards, this rodent species increases the abundance of L. ruibali and reduces its flight distance, thereby improving its escape performance. We may suggest that C. mendocinus, through the construction of burrow systems, would be acting as an ecosystem engineer in Puna desert, affecting L. ruibali ecology. 相似文献

The predatory ladybird beetle Tenuisvalvae notata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) (Mulsant) is a polygamous species and its morphology, as well as the storage capacity of seminal fluid in the spermatheca, may affect its reproductive performance. Thus, the present study evaluates the spermatheca morphology of virgin and mated T. notata females using light and scanning microscopy. The results show that the spermatheca of T. notata is kidney shaped and consists only of the receptacle and spermathecal duct, being morphologically similar in virgin and mated females. There is no secretion in the spermathecae of virgin females and, in mated females, only once it was not possible to observe the presence of spermatozoa. By contrast, females mate multiple times it is possible to observe spermatozoa in the lumen of the spermatheca surrounding the secreted material. Polygamy in T. notata might be related to the maintenance of viable spermatozoa in the spermatheca, in which case the female would prefer to copulate more times during its adult life than to store spermatozoa for a longer period of time. 相似文献

The head direction (HD) system in mammals contains neurons that fire to represent the direction the animal is facing in its environment. The ability of these cells to reliably track head direction even after the removal of external sensory cues implies that the HD system is calibrated to function effectively using just internal (proprioceptive and vestibular) inputs. Rat pups and other infant mammals display stereotypical warm-up movements prior to locomotion in novel environments, and similar warm-up movements are seen in adult mammals with certain brain lesion-induced motor impairments. In this study we propose that synaptic learning mechanisms, in conjunction with appropriate movement strategies based on warm-up movements, can calibrate the HD system so that it functions effectively even in darkness. To examine the link between physical embodiment and neural control, and to determine that the system is robust to real-world phenomena, we implemented the synaptic mechanisms in a spiking neural network and tested it on a mobile robot platform. Results show that the combination of the synaptic learning mechanisms and warm-up movements are able to reliably calibrate the HD system so that it accurately tracks real-world head direction, and that calibration breaks down in systematic ways if certain movements are omitted. This work confirms that targeted, embodied behaviour can be used to calibrate neural systems, demonstrates that 'grounding' of modelled biological processes in the real world can reveal underlying functional principles (supporting the importance of robotics to biology), and proposes a functional role for stereotypical behaviours seen in infant mammals and those animals with certain motor deficits. We conjecture that these calibration principles may extend to the calibration of other neural systems involved in motion tracking and the representation of space, such as grid cells in entorhinal cortex. 相似文献

Desert ants, Cataglyphis fortis, perform large-scale foraging trips in their featureless habitat using path integration as their main navigation tool. To determine their walking direction they use primarily celestial cues, the sky’s polarization pattern and the sun position. To examine the relative importance of these two celestial cues, we performed cue conflict experiments. We manipulated the polarization pattern experienced by the ants during their outbound foraging excursions, reducing it to a single electric field (e-)vector direction with a linear polarization filter. The simultaneous view of the sun created situations in which the directional information of the sun and the polarization compass disagreed. The heading directions of the homebound runs recorded on a test field with full view of the natural sky demonstrate that none of both compasses completely dominated over the other. Rather the ants seemed to compute an intermediate homing direction to which both compass systems contributed roughly equally. Direct sunlight and polarized light are detected in different regions of the ant’s compound eye, suggesting two separate pathways for obtaining directional information. In the experimental paradigm applied here, these two pathways seem to feed into the path integrator with similar weights. 相似文献

The lizard genus Xantusia of southwestern North America has received recent attention in relation to delimiting species. Using more than 500 lizards from 156 localities, we further test hypothesized species boundaries and clarify phylogeographical patterns, particularly in regions of potential secondary contact. We sequenced the entire mitochondrial cytochrome b gene for every lizard in the study, plus a second mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) region and two nuclear introns for subsets of the total sample. Phylogenetic analyses of the mtDNA recover a well-resolved, novel hypothesis for species in the Xantusia vigilis complex. The nuclear DNA (nDNA) data provide independent support for the recognition of X. arizonae, X. bezyi and X. wigginsi. Differences between the respective mtDNA and nDNA topologies result from either the effects of lineage sorting or ancient introgression. Nuclear data confirm the inference that some populations of X. vigilis in northwestern Arizona converged on rock-crevice-dwelling morphology and are not X. arizonae with an introgressed X. vigilis mtDNA genome. The historical independence of ancient cryptic lineages of Xantusia in southern California is also corroborated, though limited introgression is detected. Our proposed biogeographical scenario indicates that diversification of this group was driven by vicariance beginning in the late Miocene. Additionally, Pleistocene climatical changes influenced Xantusia distribution, and the now inhospitable Colorado Desert previously supported night lizard presence. The current taxonomy of the group likely underestimates species diversity within the group, and our results collectively show that while convergence on the rock-crevice-dwelling morphology is one hallmark of Xantusia evolution, morphological stasis is paradoxically another. 相似文献
