Based on molecular phylogenetic studies, Balsaminaceae, Tetrameristaceae (including Pellicieraceae) and Marcgraviaceae form the strongly supported first branching clade in the asterid order Ericales. Marcgraviaceae and Tetrameristaceae were proposed to be closely related in pre‐molecular studies, but the systematic position of Balsaminaceae has been controversial for some time and a relationship with the other two families was never suggested in pre‐molecular/pre‐cladistic times. However, interfamilial relationships in the clade are still unclear because of conflicting phylogenetic hypotheses from molecular analyses. In order to assess the validity of these molecular hypotheses from a morphological point of view, the floral morphology, anatomy and histology of Balsaminaceae, Tetrameristaceae and Marcgraviaceae are comparatively studied in detail. In addition, earlier literature is reviewed. The monophyly of the balsaminoid clade is strongly supported by floral structure, and a series of potential floral synapomorphies is identified for the clade. Prominent features shared by the three families include broad and dorsiventrally flattened filaments, thread‐like structures lining the stomia of dehisced anthers, secretory inner morphological surfaces of the gynoecium, ovules intermediate between uni‐ and bitegmic, incompletely tenuinucellar ovules, fruits with persistent style and stigma, seeds lacking endosperm and several anatomical/histological traits. The families are also distinctive because the bracts and/or sepals are petaloid and nectariferous. Further, the floral structure supports a sister group relationship between Balsaminaceae and Tetrameristaceae rather than any of the other possible interfamilial relationships. These two families share a caducous calyx, post‐genital fusion/coherence of filaments and ovary surface, latrorse anther dehiscence, commissural carpel lobes and ovules with a thickened funiculus and a constricted chalazal region. The occurrence of these features in Ericales is discussed. Future structural studies in other ericalean lineages and additional molecular studies are needed to further test these features with respect to their systematic value for the balsaminoid clade. Some may turn out to be true synapomorphies, whereas others may be recognized as plesiomorphies, as they may be more widely spread in Ericales than currently thought. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 173 , 325–386. 相似文献

Mineral implications in health issues of captive rhinos have received much attention lately. This study was undertaken to establish reference values for the mineral status of rhinos. Serum/plasma samples of free‐ranging black (Diceros bicornis) and white (Ceratotherium simum) rhinos and of captive black, white, Indian (Rhinoceros unicornis), and Sumatran (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) rhinos, as well as liver tissue samples of captive black, white, and Indian rhinos were analyzed for mineral content. Circulating mineral levels of free‐ranging animals were subject to variation according to region. In free‐ranging animals, high molybdenum (Mo) values compared to horse normals were striking. Captive animals displayed even higher circulating Mo concentrations. The significance of iron (Fe) overload in captive specimens of the browsing rhinos (black and Sumatran) was confirmed. Hepatic Fe levels increased in blacks with age. Although this Fe overload is suspected to be linked with diets, the data indicate that this is not due solely to an excessive dietary Fe supply. Whereas the grazing species (white and Indian) had high liver copper (Cu) levels, the browsing species had low to marginal liver Cu concentrations. Liver concentrations of K, Mg, Co, and Mo increased with age in captive black rhinos. Additional findings include high circulating Se levels in all rhino species. Future research should be directed at investigating factors leading to high Fe levels, and at investigating Cu metabolism in captive rhinoceros species. Anoline lamellae terminate in an epidermal free margin carrying the majority of its setae. How the free margin is extruded from the body of the scale is not well understood. Two hypotheses have been advanced to account for it, one advocating distal migration of the outer epidermal layers relative to the body of the lamella, and the other proposing regression of the dermal core. Available evidence provides partial support for both. We assembled a series of specimens of Anolis grahami representing all shedding cycle stages, and prepared histological sections of the toe pads to allow measurement of appropriate lamellar components through the shedding cycle. Through its proliferative phases the lamellae increase markedly in length, with the distance between the distal tip of the dermal core and that of the lamella accounting for most of this, indicating that epidermal extrusion is responsible for production of the new free margin. The dermal core showed no evidence of regression. Concomitant with epidermal extrusion, the lacunar cells on the inner lamellar face hypertrophy and keep pace with the increasing thickness of the outer lamellar face resulting from the lengthening of the replacement setae. The integrated changes observed are consistent with continuity of functioning and alignment of the exposed setal carpet of the outer epidermal generation while ensuring that the new setal carpet is fully aligned and functional immediately after shedding. At shedding the original proportions of the lamellae are restored. Development of the new free margin results from a combination of distal displacement of Oberhäutchen cells along with arrested maturation of the epidermis in this region. Changes in length of the lamellae during the proliferative stages may impact the overall size of the adhesive toe pad, which may have consequences for assessments of the relationship between whole animal clinging ability and adhesive pad area. The physical nature of water and the environment it presents to an organism have long been recognized as important constraints on aquatic adaptation and evolution. Little is known about the dermal cover of mosasauroids (a group of secondarily aquatic reptiles that occupied a wide array of predatory niches in the Cretaceous marine ecosystems 92–65 Myr ago), a lack of information that has hindered inferences about the nature and level of their aquatic adaptations. A newly discovered Plotosaurus skeleton with integument preserved in three dimensions represents not only the first documented squamation in a mosasaurine mosasaur but also the first record of skin in an advanced member of the Mosasauroidea. The dermal cover comprises keeled and possibly osteoderm-reinforced scales that presumably contributed to an anterior–posterior channelling of the water flow and a reduction of microturbulent burst activities along the surface of the skin. Thus, hydrodynamic requirements of life in the water might have influenced the evolution of multiple-keeled body scales in advanced mosasauroids. 相似文献

Caterpillars of the lycaenid butterfly, Liphyra brassolis, live inside the nests of arboreal weaver ants, Oecophylla smaragdina, and eat their brood. Observations of mature larvae suggest that they are impervious to relentless ant molestation, yet they lack sclerotized cuticular plates. We document a novel form of integumental defence that imparts protection from ant attack whilst maintaining the flexibility necessary to walk with a hydraulic skeleton. Analysis of the trunk integument and cuticular structures of early and late instars of L. brassolis using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and histology revealed three new setae types (disc, clavate, and lanceolate), as well as three new cuticular structures (pored sockets, cuticular pores, and cuticular domes). The unique cuticle is covered with lanceolate setae, which act as endocuticular struts, and overlapping scale‐like sockets, which form a hard, flexible integument. The imperfect armour of the early‐instar larvae suggests that abundant, putatively secretory pores are likely to be homologous to pore cupola organs (PCOs) found in other lycaenid larvae and thus may exude semiochemicals to allay ant aggression. The importance of these pores presumably wanes as structural (setal) cuticular defenses are reinforced in later instars, when adult ants have been observed attacking caterpillars to no avail. The caterpillar's antennae are unusual and seem to be involved in manipulating ant larvae into the caterpillar's mouth. Behavioural observations indicate that the dexterity of these structures is associated with eating ants (myrmecophagy). 相似文献

As the population sizes of the black and white rhinoceroses continues to decline, more efforts are needed in multiple areas to help with the conservation efforts. One area being explored is the use of genetic diversity information to aid conservation decisions. In this study, we designed 21 microsatellite primers for white and black rhinoceroses, 16 and 17 of which amplified bands in the white and black rhinoceros, respectively. Out of these primers all 16 were polymorphic in the white rhinoceros and 12 of the 17 were polymorphic in the black rhinoceros. The mean number of alleles was 3.31 and 2.12, the expected heterozygosities were 0.420 and 0.372, and the observed heterozygosities were 0.436 and 0.322 for the white and black rhinoceroses, respectively. Seven of the primers produced different allele sizes and variations that distinguished between black and white rhinoceroses. Further genetic analyses with larger wild population sample sizes and markers are recommended to obtain a better understanding of the genetic structure of the black and white rhinoceros populations in order to be useful in the conservation efforts of these critically endangered species. The first successful artificial insemination (AI) in a rhinoceros was reported in 2007 using fresh semen. Following that success, we decided to evaluate the possibility of using frozen-thawed semen for artificial insemination. Semen, collected from a 35-36 year old Southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) in the UK was frozen using the directional freezing technique. This frozen semen was used in two intrauterine AI attempts on a 30 years old female rhinoceros in Hungary. The first attempt, conducted 30 days postpartum with an insemination dose of ∼135 × 106 motile cells, failed. The second attempt, conducted two estrus cycles later with an insemination dose of ∼500 × 106 motile cells, resulted in pregnancy and the birth of a healthy offspring. This represents the first successful AI using frozen-thawed semen in a rhinoceros, putting it among very few wildlife species in which AI with frozen-thawed semen resulted in a live birth. The incorporation of AI with frozen-thawed semen into the assisted reproduction toolbox opens the way to preserve and transport semen between distant individuals in captivity or between wild and captive populations, without the need to transport stressed or potentially disease carrying animals. In addition, cryopreserved spermatozoa, in combination with AI, are useful methods to extend the reproductive lifespan of individuals beyond their biological lifespan and an important tool for managing genetic diversity in these endangered mammals. 相似文献

Madagascar's endemic ground-dwelling leaf chameleons (Brookesiinae: Brookesia Gray, 1865 + Palleon Glaw, et al., Salamandra, 2013, 49, pp. 237–238) form the sister taxon to all other chameleons (i.e., the Chamaeleoninae). They possess a limited ability of color change, a rather dull coloration, and a nonprehensile tail assisting locomotion in the leaf litter on the forest floor. Most Brookesia species can readily be recognized by peculiar spiky dorsolateral projections (“Rückensäge”), which are caused by an aberrant vertebral structure and might function as body armor to prevent predation. In addition to a pronounced Rückensäge, the Antsingy leaf chameleon Brookesia perarmata (Angel, 1933) exhibits conspicuous, acuminate tubercle scales on the lateral flanks and extremities, thereby considerably enhancing the overall armored appearance. Such structures are exceptional within the Chamaeleonidae and despite an appreciable interest in the integument of chameleons in general, the morphology of these integumentary elements remains shrouded in mystery. Using various conventional and petrographic histological approaches combined with μCT-imaging, we reveal that the tubercle scales consist of osseous, multicusped cores that are embedded within the dermis. Based on this, they consequently can be interpreted as osteoderms, which to the best of our knowledge is the first record of such for the entire Chamaeleonidae and only the second one for the entire clade Iguania. The combination of certain aspects of tissue composition (especially the presence of large, interconnected, and marrow-filled cavities) together with the precise location within the dermis (being completely enveloped by the stratum superficiale), however, discriminate the osteoderms of B. perarmata from those known for all other lepidosaurs. 相似文献

External and histological examination of the photophores of the linebelly swallower Pseudoscopelus sagamianus reveal three epidermal layers of cells that form the light-producing and light-transmitting components of the photophores. Photophores among the examined photophore tracts are not significantly different in structure but the presence of mucous cells in the superficial layers of the photophore suggest continued function of the epidermal photophore in contributing to the mucous coat. This is the first evidence of intrinsic bioluminescence in primarily epidermal photophores reported in ray-finned fishes. 相似文献

The alimentary canal of the two‐spot ladybird Adalia bipunctata (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) presents the foregut (stomodeum), the midgut (mesenteron) and the hindgut (proctodeum). The shortest region is the foregut and the longest is the midgut. The relative proportions of the main regions were found to be similar for males and females. In the foregut it was possible to distinguish the pharynx, the esophagus and the proventriculus but no crop. The hindgut is composed of the ileum, rectum and rectal canal. Generally the organ width is similar for males and females, but females presented a wider proventriculus. The epithelium of the foregut varied from squamous to simple cuboidal and columnar. In the midgut the epithelium is simple columnar with goblet and regenerative cells. The epithelium of the hindgut varied from simple cuboidal to squamous. Females presented thicker midgut epithelium whereas males presented thicker epithelium in the esophagus. The anatomy of the alimentary canal of A. bipunctata seems to conform to its carnivorous and recent phylogenetic status within the family Coccinellidae. 相似文献

All amphibians are thought to possess two distinct types of dermal gland: mucous and granular. Mucous glands typically produce an acidic, flocculent and carbohydrate positive secretion that keeps skin moist and helps maintain homeostasis. In this study, we use a battery of histochemical tests to identify these traditional mucous glands in the dermis of the plethodontid salamander Ensatina eschscholtzii . The periodic acid-Schiff, alcian blue, toluidine blue and carmine reactions reveal the absence of both acidic glycosaminoglycans and traditional mucous glands. Instead, E. eschscholtzii produces neutral mucus in specialized granular glands, which we name mucus-producing granular glands (MPGGs). The loss of traditional mucous glands is a derived trait for Ensatina . © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 87 , 469–477. 相似文献

Bone histology of osteoderms in the armoured temnospondyl Peltobatrachus , plagiosaurids ( Gerrothorax , Plagiosuchus ) and dissorophids ( Aspidosaurus , Cacops , Platyhystrix ), as well as in the chroniosuchian Bystrowiella , is studied. The massive osteoderms of Peltobatrachus and Gerrothorax consist of homogeneous parallel-fibred bone, whereas in dissorophids, a lightly built, trabecular middle region is mantled by a thin cortex that is composed of a plywood-type structure. In Bystrowiella and Plagiosuchus , the osteoderms consist to a large degree of interwoven primary fibres and have cell lacunae that bear stumpy canaliculi. The differences in the histological structure of dissorophids and plagiosaurids suggest an iterative evolution of osteoderms. Furthermore, histology in Plagiosuchus indicates a metaplastic development of the osteoderms, whereas the osteoderms of Gerrothorax represent periosteal ossifications as in dissorophids. This suggests a convergent origin of osteoderms also within plagiosaurids. The extensive armour in Gerrothorax probably constituted a calcium reservoir, indicated by cyclical resorption events preserved in the external cortex and interpreted as a physiological response to periodic changes in salinity of the aquatic environment. In contrast, the unique osteoderm structure of dissorophids provides maximum stability and minimum bone mass, and is coherent with the interpretation that the osteoderms served to strengthen the vertebral column during terrestrial locomotion. 相似文献

Hybodontoid and nonhybodontoid sharks are described from the Lower Triassic Vega‐Phroso Siltstone Member of Sulphur Mountain Formation on the basis of newly discovered material. The age of the classic fossil site ‘Wapiti Lake’ in the Canadian Rocky Mountains is discussed on the basis of new field data and one conodont found in association. Preliminary results suggest that these elasmobranch remains are between early Smithian and Spathian in age. Apart from the enigmatic genus Listracanthus and previously reported edestoids, the shark fauna consists of at least one hybodont, at least two questionable hybodontoid genera and an elasmobranch of enigmatic affinities, represented by peculiar denticles only and described as ‘genus A’incertae sedis. The presence of the only previously reported hybodont genus, cf. Palaeobates, is erroneous. The largest specimen represents the most complete Early Mesozoic shark known. The heterodonty of its dentition, fin spine morphology and the short, robust body shape imply it represents a member of a new family of shark, Wapitiodidae fam. nov. , and is described here as Wapitiodus aplopagus gen. et sp. nov. The unique dental morphology shows affinities to Polyacrodus but clearly differs in the complete lack of side cusps. Wapitiodus gen. nov. possesses a primitive fin spine structure. The tooth crowns are entirely blunt in the distal (posterior) tooth files, and are acuminate‐unicuspid in several anterior files. Tooth morphology, the shape of the basal cartilages, the proximal insertion of the fin spines and the pectoral fin structure are interpreted as diagnostic characters for this new genus, and possibly for the Wapitiodidae fam. nov. The majority of observed characters appear to be primitive and are reminiscent of Palaeozoic sharks, however, and these features include dorsal fin spine morphology and gross skull anatomy. A second species, provisionally placed in the same genus, is described as Wapitiodus homalorhizo sp. nov. Wapitiodus homalorhizo sp. nov. can be distinguished from W. aplopagus gen. et sp. nov. by the proportions of the fin spines, tooth morphology and possibly the body shape. Several isolated teeth and other fragmentary material are referred to either Wapitiodus gen. nov. sp. indet. or to ?Polyacrodus sp. (Polyacrodontidae gen. et sp. indet.). A third genus of elasmobranch (incertae sedis) is described as ‘Genus A’ and is recognized by its peculiar scales. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 149 , 309–337. 相似文献

To better understand the mating systems of majoid crabs, we studied the functional anatomy of the female reproductive systems of the spider crabs Leurocyclus tuberculosus and Libinia spinosa, comparing them with those of other Majoidea. Adult females were measured and dissected, and their reproductive systems described macroscopically and histologically. In females of both species, the seminal receptacles are paired globular structures of ecto‐mesodermal origin. The mesoderm‐derived region is lined by a stratified epithelium. The anchoring, proliferative, and secretory strata are clearly recognizable . The ectoderm‐derived region is lined by a simple cylindrical epithelium underlying a cuticle that increases in thickness toward the vagina. The transition between the ectoderm and mesoderm‐derived regions is abrupt, with differences between the studied species: Li. spinosa has a “velum,” whereas Le. tuberculosus presents prominent “folds.” In both species, the position in which the oviduct is connected to the seminal receptacles is intermediate between the dorsal and ventral types previously described in other eubrachyurans. The seminal receptacles of the studied species show four different conditions, which can be distinguished macroscopically based on their shape and amount of sperm stored. We compare our data with those from other Majoidea in an attempt to determine whether the morphology of the seminal receptacles is related to different mating strategies or behaviors. 相似文献

The morphology of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) is a strong indicator of the dietary habits of a species. The goal of this study was to describe the gross and microanatomy of the digestive tract of the neo-tropical opossum (Didelphis marsupialis insularis) and relate them to the animals’ food habits. GI tracts from 12 adult animals were used for this study. Results found the small intestine made up 65.9% of the GI tract, and the stomach was simple with a prominent caecum. Histologically, the oesophageal mucosa was non-keratinized and glands were found throughout the oesophagus. The large intestine showed a great number of goblet cells, the jejunum possessed well-developed villi, and Peyer's patches were absent in the ileum. The absence of keratinization of the epithelial lining of the oesophagus and stomach and a high lymphocytic infiltration throughout the small and large intestine reflected a more carnivorous diet, whereas the presence of a well-developed caecum in the large intestine indicated the ability to digest plant matter. Overall, the morphology of GI tract of D. m. insularis displayed both carnivorous and herbivorous features, allowing us to conclude that it is an omnivorous animal. 相似文献
