Honeydew droplets freshly excreted by two aphid species, Myzus persicae (Sulz.) and Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harr.), feeding on nutritionally adequate, artificial diets containing 10–40% w/v sucrose, were collected in oil. The volume, frequency of excretion, and carbohydrate content of the droplets were determined by measuring the diameter of the droplets in the oil, by recording the number of droplets excreted per aphid per hour, and by using a quantitative colorimetric method for estimating carbohydrates. Rates for the intake or excretion of fluid, the intake and absorption of sucrose, and the excretion of carbohydrate were consequently calculated for the two species on each dietary sucrose concentration. The percentage of dietary sucrose absorbed by the aphids ranged from 36% on diet with 40% sucrose to 97% on diet with 10% sucrose. Such honeydew/diet relationships may allow one to use honeydew carbohydrate concentrations to estimate the sucrose concentrations of the phloem sap ingested by aphids feeding on host plants.
Résumé Des gouttelettes de miellat fraîchement excrétées par deux espèces de pucerons, Myzus persicae (Sulz.) et Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harr.), pucerons nourris sur des régimes nutritifs synthétiques contenant 10–40% de saccharose, ont été récupérées dans de l'huile. Le volume des gouttelettes a été déterminé en mesurant leur diamètre individuel dans l'huile, la fréquence d'excrétion établie par le nombre de gouttelettes excrétées par puceron par heure, et la teneur en glucides par une méthode d'analyse colorimétrique quantitative. Les taux d'ingestion et d'excrétion de liquide, d'ingestion et d'absorption de saccharose ainsi que les taux d'excrétion de glucides ont été par la suite calculés pour les deux espèces d'aphides nourris sur les différentes concentrations de saccharose. Le pourcentage de saccharose alimentaire absorbé par les aphides a été de 36% sur le régime contenant 40% de ce glucide, mais s'est élevé à 97% sur le régime ne contenant que 10% de saccharose. D'après ces relations miellat/régime nutritif, et en connaissant la teneur du miellat en glucides, on peut faire une approximation de la concentration du saccharose dans la sève élaborée du phloème ingérée par les aphides.相似文献

Several aphid honeydews were incorporated into sucrose solutions and presented to hop aphids, Phorodon humuli (Schrank), as artificial diets in free-choice bioassays. Small additions of honeydew collected from two species of aphid feeding on hop, Humulus lupulus L., arrested the searching behavior of the hop aphid and appeared to stimulate prolonged periods of ingestion. This effect was more dependent on the host plant honeydew source than the species of aphid that produced the honeydew. Aphid honeydews collected from plants other than hop (non-hosts to P. humuli) contained hop aphid phagostimulants that were less effective. Our results indicate that analysis of aphid honeydew could help describe chemical cues involved in the recognition of appropriate host plants by aphid species. 相似文献

The radioactivity of the honeydew droplets excreted by young apterous adults of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, fed on an artificial diet containing 3H-inulin was a reliable measure of the volume of food ingested by the insects, since almost none of the ingested inulin was absorbed and retained by the insects.

Die Radioaktivität der Blattläuse und ihrer ausgeschiedenen Honigtautropfen wurde in Zeitintervallen nach der Fütterung bestimmt. The ecological consequences of genetic variability in host plant exploitation of Myzus persicae (Hemiptera, Aphididae) were studied in several agro-ecosystems, differing in crop plant heterogeneity. An analysis of aphid populations sampled from sugar beet, potatoes, and lettuce revealed changes in the frequency distribution of aphid clones according to their respective host plant adaptations. The spatial unit of differentiation was below an average field size of 3–5 hectares and a differentiation could be found in the centre of potato and sugar beet fields but not at the edge of the fields. On a temporal scale, the differentiation of populations is transitory even on a large-scale basis of highly specialized cropping areas. The ecological parameters of differentiation are discussed with special reference to agro-ecosystems and integrated pest management. Increasing the genetic heterogeneity of crop fields may help to reduce population outbreaks.
Zusammenfassung Die ökologischen Konsequenzen genetischer Variabilität in der Wirtspflanzennutzung von Myzus persicae (Hemiptera, Aphididae) wurden in mehreren Agro-Ökosystemen untersucht, die sich in der Kulturpflanzenheterogenität unterscheiden. Eine Analyse von auf Rüben, Kartoffeln und Salat siedelnden Populationen zeigte eine genetische Differenzierung in Wirtspflanzen-angepaßte Feld-populationen. Die räumliche Einheit solcher Differenzierungen liegt unterhalb einer Feldgröße von 3–5 ha. Eine Differenzierung konnte hier in der Mitte der Felder aber nicht am Rand festgestellt werden. Aus zeitlicher Sicht ist die Differenzierung selbst in großräumigen, spezialisierten Anbaugebieten nur vorübergehend feststellbar. Die ökologischen Parameter der Differenzierung werden besonders in Hinsicht auf die integrierte Schädlingsbekämpfung in Agro-ökosystemen diskutiert. Eine Erhöhung der genetischen Heterogenität von Kulturpflanzenbeständen kann möglicherweise zu einer Verringerung von Blattlaus-Massenvermehrungen beitragen.相似文献

Like honey bees (Apis mellifera), non-Apis bees could exploit honeydew as a carbohydrate source. In addition to providing carbohydrates, this may expose them to potentially harmful plant products secreted in honeydew. However, knowledge on honeydew feeding by solitary bees is very scarce. Here we determine whether the polylectic solitary bee Osmia bicornis (=O. rufa) collects honeydew under semi-field conditions, and whether this is affected by aphid species and presence of floral nectar. Bees were provided with oilseed rape plants containing flowers and/or colonies of either Myzus persicae or Brevicoryne brassicae. We used the total sugar level of the bee crop as a measure of the individual's nutritional state and the oligosaccharide erlose as indicator for honeydew consumption. Erlose was present in honeydews from both aphid species, while absent in oilseed rape nectar, nor being synthesized by O. bicornis. When bees were confined to a single honeydew type as the only carbohydrate source, consumption of M. persicae honeydew was confirmed for 47% of the bees and consumption of B. brassicae honeydew for only 3%. Increased mortality in the latter treatment provided further evidence that B. brassicae honeydew is an unsuitable food source for O. bicornis. All bees that were given the choice between honeydew and floral nectar showed significantly increased total sugar levels. However, the fact that no erlose was detected in these bees indicates that honeydew was not consumed when suitable floral nectar was available. The parasitoidEphedrus cerasicola Starý oviposited in all 4 nymphal instars and in newly moulted adults ofMyzus persicae (Sulzer). The different host categories were offered with no choice. The duration of an oviposition increased with the age of nymphs, being about 13, 18, 21, 22, and 17 s from 1 st instars to adults, respectively. Observations of number of stabbing attacks prior to oviposition, percent of the encounters not resulting in oviposition, time from first encounter to oviposition, handling time and aphid defensive behaviour also indicated that 1 st instarM. persicae are most easily parasitized. The behaviour ofE. cerasicola in encounters with unparasitized and parasitized hosts, suggested that the parasitoid could discriminate. The aphid parasitoid Ephedrus cerasicola Starý (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) discriminates between parasitized and unparasitized aphid hosts (Myzus persicae (Sulzer), Homoptera: Aphididae) in two different ways. By antennal contact with the parasitized host, it can detect an external marking pheromone which is effective only for a few hours. The behaviour of the parasitoid also indicated that it responded to an internal marker, probably by means of chemoreceptors on the ovipositor. The parasitoid behaviour was studied in encounters with parasitized hosts 0–10 min, 2–3 h, 6–7 h and 23–24 h after the first parasitization. Aphids were superparasitized within 1 h or after 24 h, and aphids in each experiment were later dissected at two different times. It is suggested that the supernumerary offspring were eliminated by chemical means, whether the time between the two ovipositions was 0–1 h or 24 h.

Il peut percevoir une phéromone externe de marquage perceptible seulement pendant quelques heures par contact antennaire. Son comportement montre qu'il réagit aussi à un marquage interne, probablement par des chémorécepteurs de sa tarière. Le comportement du parasitoïde a été étudié en le mettant en contact avec des hôtes parasités depuis 0–10 min, 2–3 h, 6–7 h et 23–24 h. Les pucerons ont été surparasités pendant la première heure ou après 24 heures. Les pucerons de toutes les expériences ont été disséqués à deux moments différents. Preimaginal development, mortality, aphid consumption rate, and size and weight upon reaching the adult stage of the aphidophagous coccinellids Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville and Coccinella septempunctata L. collected from Karditsa, central Greece, were examined at four constant temperatures (14, 17, 20 and 23 °C) and L16:D8. The coccinellids fed on the tobacco aphid, Myzus persicae nicotianae Blackman. Egg, larval and pupal mortality was highest at 14 °C reaching 85.0, 73.8 and 29.4% in H. convergens and 49.3, 75.4 and 58.8% in C. septempunctata, respectively. Total preimaginal development ranged from 57.2 to 70.4 days at 14 °C, and to 16.9 and 22.1 days at 23 °C in H. convergens and C. septempunctata, respectively. Heavier and larger adults of H. convergens were obtained at 17 and 20 ° C. In C. septempunctata temperature did not affect adult weight while the lowest size was observed at 14 and 17 °C. Day-degrees requirements for preimaginal development in H. corvengens were 212.9 above a developmental threshold of 11.0 °C. The corresponding values for C. septempunctata were 281.5 and 10.7 °C. In H. convergens total and daily aphid consumption ranged from 46.8 aphids at 14 °C to 85.0 aphids at 23 °C and from 1.5 aphids at 14 °C to 9.2 aphids at 23 °C, respectively. The corresponding values for C. septempunctata were 112.0 and 2.7 at 14 °C and 157.7 and 12.4 at 23 °C. The results show the high potential of both predators as biological control agents against the tobacco aphid. The knowledge obtained could be essential for their appropriate use and for the improvement of mass rearing systems. 相似文献

Electrical penetration graphs (EPG's) were used to locate resistance to Phorodon humuli (Schrank) (Homoptera, Aphididae) in hops (Humulus lupulus, Cannabinaceae). Aphids on those hops showing resistance had a much reduced E2 pattern (uptake of phloem). In addition, many aphids on the resistant plants spent time non-probing within two minutes of withdrawing from the phloem. This was not observed with aphids on susceptible hops. The results suggest that resistance is located in the phloem. The involvement of a mechanical factor such as the blocking of aphid stylets, the presence of antinutritional factors, or simply an inadequate supply of nutrients, are discussed as possible resistance mechanisms. 相似文献

Green peach aphids Myzus persicae from the Beijing region, maintained on greenhouse tobacco plants, were reared on modified artificial diet; sinigrin, tomatine, nicotine, gossypol, phlorizin, inulin and malic acid were added separately in concentrations of 0.1% or 0.2%. In preference tests none of the diets enriched by secondary substances was more acceptable than the basal diet. Diet uptake during larval development was determined quantitatively by using C14 glycine in the diets. For the basal diet the total uptake during larval development was about 1.16 l/aphid. The addition of secondary plant substances to the diet caused reductions of uptake to different degrees in the order: nicotine>phlorizin>gossypol>tomatine>malic acid>inulin>sinigrin. The larvae feeding on diets containing sinigrin or tomatine from the second day after birth seemed to have a much higher tolerance for sinigrin than tomatine, with a mortality of 9.6% within 7 days of rearing for the former and 89.4% for the latter. Hence this aphid differs from that occurring in the Netherlands in that the latter has a higher tolerance towards tomatine. The addition of inulin, malic acid or sinigrin did not cause a significant difference in the rate of larval development or in adult longevity. Diets containing these substances could support the aphid's development and reproduction for at least three generations.
Résumé Des Myzus persicae de la région de Beijing, conservés sur tabac en serre, ont été élevés sur un régime artificiel voisin de celui de Dadd & Mittler (1966); sinigrine, tomatine, nicotine, gossypol, phlorizine, inuline et acide malique ont été ajoutés séparément aux concentrations de 0,1 et 0,2%. En comparant les préférences, aucun des régimes enrichis en substances secondaires n'était supérieur au régime de base. La prise alimentaire pendant le développement larvaire a été quantifiée en utilisant de la glycine C14 dans le régime. Les èlevages étaient conduits à 25±1 °C et H. R. 85% et une photopériode J/N: 16/8. Le prélèvement total de régime de base pendant le développement larvaire était environ 1,16 l/puceron. L'addition de substances secondaires végétales au régime induit de façon inégale le prélèvement, dans l'ordre suivant: nicotine>phlorizine>gossypol>tomatine>acide malique>inuline>sinigrine. Les larves consommant sur des régimes contenant de la sinigrine ou de la tomatine à partir du second jour après la naissance semblent prèsenter une plus grande tolèrance pour la sinigrine que la tomatine, avec une mortalité de 9,6% en 7 jours d'élevage pour la première et 89,4% pour la seconde. Ainsi ces pucerons diffèrent de ceux de Hollande, puisque ces derniers tolèrent plus la tomatine (Schoonhoven & Derksen-Koppers, 1976). L'addition d'inuline, d'acide malique ou de sinigrine ne provoque pas de différence significative dans le taux de développement larvaire ou la longévité des adultes. Adults of the lady beetle Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville requiring aphids for egg production, were fed suboptimal amounts of apteriform virginoparous larvae or alatiform gynoparous larvae of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulz.), and artificial diet ad lib. The beetles initiated oviposition sooner and deposited significantly more eggs when supplied with the same weight of apterous virginoparous morph. The possible nutritional, hormonal, and ecological implications of the findings are discussed.
Zusammenfassung Die Eiproduktion des Marienkäfers Hippodamia convergens, welcher hierzu Blattläuse als Nahrung benötigt, wurde bei Fütterung mit zwei verschiedenen Morphen der Blattlaus Myzus persicae untersucht. Conclusions The importance of using azadirachtin in the field at levels causing primary antifeedancy may have been overemphasised in the past. Currently, it is recommended that commercial preparations of neem be applied at 50–100 ppm (a.i.). While this would undoubtedly have an antifeedant effect in many phytophagous insects it may also harm beneficial species (Schmutterer, 1990). By lowering the concentration of azadirachtin applied to the crop, food intake by insect pests with low chemoreceptor sensitivity to azadirachtin, e.g. aphids (Nisbet et al., 1993; 1994), would not initially be affected. However, secondary antifeedant effects, IGR and sterilant effects could rapidly manifest themselves and bring about crop protection by reducing insect pest populations without harming natural predator or parasitoid populations. 相似文献

Two viviparous parthenogenetic clones of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), one collected from Rydalmere, New South Wales (NSW), and the other from South Perth (SP), Western Australia, were reared on radish, Raphanus sativus L. cv. Scarlet Globe, under controlled conditions. The NSW clone was fed on simple artificial diets containing alkaloid extracted from narrow-leafed lupin, Lupinus angustifolius L. cv. Fest., and its reproductive performance monitored over 112 h. Forty (40) h into the experiment and thereafter, aphids on the control diet (sucrose solution) produced significantly more offspring (P<0.05) than those on diets containing alkaloid. In a separate experiment, apterae of each clone were caged on three lines (cv. Yorrel, cv. Danja and 84L:441) of narrow-leafed lupin, and allowed to reproduce. The first three offspring were retained, and all developed to 3rd or 4th instar stage. Two nymphs were removed, and the remaining nymph reared through. All three lines produced adults. The number of young produced were counted over 11 days. Fecundity of the SP clone was lower on line 84L:441, but there was no difference in the fecundity of the NSW clone. Phloem exudate and green tissue was concomitantly collected from all lines, and analysed by GC-MS for the alkaloids lupanine and 13-hydroxylupanine. Line 84L:441 contained the highest level of total alkaloids in both phloem and tissue. All experiments indicate that alkaloid level may suppress fecundity of green peach aphids. 相似文献

Three isomers of farnesene occur in the siphon excretions of at least four aphid species: the siphon excretions of Myzus persicae contain (E)--farnesene, as well as (Z,E)--farnesene. The significance of (E)--farnesene as an alarm pheromone was evaluated by the investigation of the ratios and quantities of the above-mentioned farnesene isomers in various morphs of Myzus persicae (Sulz.). It is suggested that a relationship exists between the production of farnesene isomers and the occurrence of morphs.

So enthielt zum Beispiel das Siphonensekret bei Myzus persicae (E)--, (Z,E)-- und (E,E)--Farnesen. Um die Bedeutung des (E)--Farnesens zu ermitteln, haben wir die Mengen und Verhältnisse der Farnesenisomere in verschiedenen Morphen von Myzus persicae bestimmt. Multiparasitism of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) by the solitary aphidiid parasitoids Aphidius matricariae Haliday and Ephedrus cerasicola Starý was studied in the laboratory at 22°C. Single aphids first stung by an A. matricariae female were then offered to a female of E. cerasicola 1, 2 or 3 days later. E. cerasicola oviposited without restraint in such aphids. The multiparasitized aphids were dissected 3 or 4 days after the Ephedrus parasitization or allowed to mummify.Only a single parasitoid, either egg or larva, was found in a dissected host. The relative frequency of the two species was roughly the same in dissection series as in corresponding mummification series. When E. cerasicola oviposited 1 or 2 days after A. matricariae, E. cerasicola was the intrinsically superior species. Dissection showed that the competition occurred at least one day before the Ephedrus egg hatched, and that very few eggs of A. matricariae hatched in such aphids. Apparently, the Aphidius eggs must have been killed by substances injected by the ovipositing Ephedrus female or by substances or structures connected with the Ephedrus egg itself. When E. cerasicola oviposited 3 days after A. matricariae, A. matricariae survived. Probably its 4th instar larvae devoured the eggs of E. cerasicola together with the other host contents.Interspecific competition without larvae involved has not previously been demonstrated in Aphidiidae.
Résumé L'étude du multiparasitisme de Myzus persicae (Sulzer) par les parasitoïdes Aphidiidae solitaires, Aphidius matricariae Haliday et Ephedrus cerasicola Stary a été réalisée à 22°C. Des pucerons isolés, piqués par une femelle de A. matricariae avaient été proposés ensuite à une femelle de E. cerasicola, 1, 2 ou 3 jours plus tard. E. cerasicola a pondu sans restriction dans de tels pucerons.Des témoins constitués de pucerons piqués par A. matricariae ont permis de déterminer le pourcentage des pucerons piqués, réellement parasités par A. matricariae. Les pucerons parasités une ou plusieurs fois ont pu se mommifier ou ont été disséqués 3 ou 4 jours après avoir été parasités par Ephedrus.Les fréquences relatives de développement des deux espèces, obtenues par dissection ou par étude des mommies, ont été rigoureusement les mêmes. Quand A. matricariae avait pondu 1 ou 2 jours avant E. cerasicola, A. matricariae s'est développé dans au moins 15% des pucerons apparemment multiparasités, contre 60 à 70% dans les témoins. Chez ces pucerons multiparasités, E. cerasicola était un compétiteur intrinsèquement supérieur. Quand A. matricariae avait pondu 3 jours avant E. cerasicola, A. matricariae survivait et se développait dans environ 70% des pucerons multiparasités. Chez ces pucerons, les oeufs d'E. cerasicola avaient probablement été dévorés avec le contenu de l'hôte par les larves âgées d'A. matricariae.Les oeufs des parasitoïdes sont difficiles à observer dans l'hôte les premiers jours après la ponte. Un seul parasitoïde, oeuf ou larve, était découvert lors de la dissection du puceron. La conclusion en a été que la compétition en faveur de E. cerasicola s'est produite quand les deux espèces étaient sous forme d'oeuf et au moins un jour avant l'éclosion d'Ephedrus. On peut en déduire que les oeufs d'A. matricariae sont tués par des substances injectées par la femelle de E. cerasicola lors de la ponte.Une compétition interspécifique n'impliquant pas les larves n'avait jamais été démontrée chez les Aphidiidae.相似文献

Individuals of the grain aphid Sitobion avenae were collected from wheat and cocksfoot stands around Hampshire, UK, during March and April 1994. Eight wheat and eight cocksfoot aphid clones were chosen on the basis of readily distinguishable RAPD-PCR fingerprint profiles. The performances (weight, fecundity and survival) of successive generations of each of these clones were then carefully monitored in the laboratory as new generations of aphids were transferred either to winter wheat or to cocksfoot in planned sequences. Even those clones that were originally caught on the same host showed significant variability in performance. Clones generally performed better on their host of origin than they did on the alternate host, and they performed less well on the alternate host compared to the clones that had originated there. A comparison of the performance of third generation aphids with first generation aphids showed that the experience of the mother in the second generation often influences the subsequent performance of their offspring. As the sequence of host transfers had more effect on the performance of wheat clones than cocksfoot clones, it is likely that wheat clones are more specialised, such that wheat is a satisfactory host for cocksfoot clones but not vice versa. The study provides evidence of genetic variation in performance on host and evidence for clonal adaptation to particular host species. This adaptation may well be a major cause of the observed consistent genetic differentiability of populations of S. avenae found on wheat and roadside grasses in early spring in southern England. 相似文献

Nineteen cohorts of Hyperomyzus lactucae (L.) (Homoptera: Aphididae) reared at various temperaturelight regimes were exposed to attack by Aphidius sonchi Marshall (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) at different ages of their development. Irrespective of host age at the initial parasitization and rearing conditions, the rates of reproduction, development and survival were unaffected until the parasites within had completed approximately 30, 40 and 55% of their total development respectively. As a result, aphids parasitized in the first or early second instar failed to reach maturity. Thereafter, the numbers of young produced by parasitized aphids increased rapidly as the age of the hosts at initial parasitization increased, and aphids parasitized 3 days after the final moult or later showed similar potential to contribute to future population increase.In comparison with the effects on host moulting, those on wing development of the potentially alatiform nymphs appeared much sooner after the beginning of parasitization, but again with the time lags being more or less independent of host age at the initial parasite attack. Consequently, the extent of wing development depended entirely on the age of the hosts when attacked.These results showed that the age of the host at the initial parasite attack is crucial in determining the consequences of parasitization on the host.
Résumé Dix-neuf cohortes d'Hyperomyzus lactucae L. (Homoptera: Aphididae), élevées dans différentes conditions de lumière et de température, ont été exposées à différents moments de leur développement aux attaques d'Aphidius sonchi Marsh. (Hym. Aphidiidae). Quels que soient les conditions d'élevage et l'âge des pucerons quand ils ont été parasités, la survie, le développement et la reproduction n'ont été affectés que lorsque les parasites avaient accompli 30, 40 et 55% de leur développement total. Ainsi, les pucerons parasités au premier stade ou au début du second ne parvenaient pas à atteindre la maturité. Par la suite, le nombre de jeunes produits par les pucerons parasités a cru rapidement au fur et à mesure que l'âge de ces derniers au moment où ils avaient été parasités la dernière mue ou plus tard présentaient la même potentialité pour contribuer à l'accroissement ultérieur de la population.Comparés aux effets sur la mue, les effets sur le développement alaire des larves potentiellement ailées apparaissent beaucoup plus tôt après le moment où le puceron a été parasité, mais là aussi avec des délais plus ou moins indépendants de l'âge de l'hôte lors de la première attaque du parasite. The effect of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana on the biological characteristics and life table of Aphidius matricariae, a parasitoid of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, was studied under laboratory conditions. Aphids were first infected with twice the LC95 of B. bassiana for third-instar M. persicae (2 × 108 conidia/ml). Subsequently, at different intervals they were exposed to 1-day-old mated parasitoid females for 24 h. The number of mummies produced per female and the percentage emergence of the F1 generation differed significantly as a function of the time interval between application of the fungus and exposure to the parasitoid. The interference of B. bassiana on parasitoid development was also studied by first exposing the aphid hosts to the parasitoid for 24 h and subsequently applying B. bassiana. The number of mummies produced by a female A. matricariae varied from 11.8 to 24.8 and was significantly different when the aphids were first exposed to the parasitoids and then treated with B. bassiana 24, 48, 72, and 96 h after exposure. There were no significantly different effects of B. bassiana on net reproductive rate (R0), mean generation time (T), intrinsic rate (rm) and the finite rate of increase (λ) of A. matricariae as a result of development in hosts exposed to low or high conidial concentrations (1 × 102, 2 × 108 conidia/ml). The parasitoids developed in infected hosts had lower rm, λ, T and DT (doubling time) values compared with those that developed in uninfected hosts but no differences were observed in R0 values. With proper timing, A. matricariae and B. bassiana can be used in combination in the successful biological control of M. persicae. 相似文献
