The development of resistance in aphid populations highlights the importance of biological control as a pest management tactic. Four treatments were evaluated to determine the effects of pesticides on the population dynamics of Aphis gossypii Glover and Neozygites fresenii (Nowakowski) Batko: (1) weekly applications of the insecticide imidacloprid (Provado 1.6 F); (2) weekly applications of the fungicide chlorothalonil (Bravo 720); (3) applications of imidacloprid (Provado 1.6 F) when aphid densities exceeded 30 aphids per leaf, and (4) untreated control. Differences in aphid density among the four treatments were shown only to be significant during the 1997 growing season; however, aphid densities were greater in the chlorothalonil treatment than in the other treatments during each growing season. Percentage of N. fresenii-killed aphids was most often highest in the chlorothalonil treatment as well. The fungal epizootic caused by N. fresenii was delayed approximately 1 wk in the chlorothalonil treatment when compared with the other treatments. This delay allowed the aphids to temporarily escape suppression by the fungus and to continue to increase in density until the density-dependent effects of the epizootic overwhelmed the aphid population. N. fresenii also appeared to persist in the system when imidacloprid was in use and does appear responsible for initial aphid reductions. Treatment did not appear to have a large influence on yield outcome. Yield was variable from year to year and from location to location.  相似文献

The entomopathogenic fungus Pandora neoaphidis is a recognized pathogen of aphids, causes natural epizootics in aphid populations, and interacts and competes with aphid predators and parasitoids. Survival of entomophthoralean fungi in periods of unsuitable weather conditions or lack of appropriate host insects is accomplished mainly by thick-walled resting spores (zygospores or azygospores). However, resting spores are not known for some entomophthoralean species such as P. neoaphidis. Several hypotheses of P. neoaphidis winter survival can be found in the literature but so far these hypotheses do not include the presence of resting spores. Resting spores were found in an aphid population where P. neoaphidis was the only entomophthoralean fungus observed during surveys conducted in organic horticultural crops in greenhouses and open fields in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. This study sought to use molecular methods to confirm that these resting spores were, in fact, those of P. neoaphidis while further documenting and characterizing these resting spores that were produced in vivo in aphid hosts. The double-walled resting spores were characterized using light and transmission electron microscopy. The Argentinean resting spores clustered together with P. neoaphidis isolates with bootstrap values above 98 % in the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) sequence analysis and with bootstrap values above 99 % the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) II region sequence analysis. This study is the first gene-based confirmation from either infected hosts or cultures that P. neoaphidis is able to produce resting spores.  相似文献

1 The RAPD method (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) was used to investigate genetic diversity of the green spruce aphid, Elatobium abietinum Walker, a pest introduced recently to Iceland. 2 This aphid in Iceland comprised two polymorphic populations, one in the east and the other in the west of the country. The genetic variation between sites within a population was continuous and appeared to be in good agreement with geographical distances. 3 In the eastern population the variation was greater between sites than within sites, whereas in the western population the pattern of variation appeared to be the opposite. This overall greater genetic variation in the eastern population could be due to its having been colonized earlier than the western one. 4 The study also demonstrated a close relationship between the green spruce aphid in Iceland and aphids from Denmark, which agrees with their assumed origin. The differences in introduction time, adaptation and competitiveness between the two Icelandic populations are discussed.  相似文献

A total number of 1092 migratory alates were trapped from air in wheat grown area of Yuanyang County, Henan Province from early April through May 2002 in order to confirm the source and dissemination of entomophthoralean inocula to cause epizootics of cereal aphids. Those included 415 Sitobion avenae, 642 Rhopalosiphum padi, 22 Metopolophium dirhodum, and 13 Schizaphis graminum. The trapped alates were daily collected and individually reared for 7 days on wheat plants in laboratory. Of those 341 alates died of fungal infection, taking 31.2% in the trapped alates. These included 224 S. avenae, 106 R. padi, 8 M. dirhodum, and 3 S. graminum. Deaths of all infected alates occurred during the first 5 days and 78.9% of the deaths occurred within the first 3 days. Individual examination under microscope proved that all deaths were attributed to entomophthoralean fungi. Of those Pandora neoaphidis accounted for 84.6%, Conidiobolus obscurus for 9.9%, and Entomophthora planchoniana for 5.5%. Four alate deaths die  相似文献

Hydrophobic and hydrophilic kaolin-based particle films are effective for control of insect pests in certain agricultural crops. How these products interact with potential biological control agents is not well documented. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the hydrophobic (M96-018) and hydrophilic (Surround WP) kaolin-based particle films (Engelhard Corporation, Iselin, NJ) on pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), on peas (Pisum spp.), and on the fungal aphid pathogen Pandora neoaphidis (Remaudière and Hennebert) Humber. Over two field seasons (2001 and 2002) in northern Idaho, applications of M96-018 significantly reduced the rate of pea aphid increase on pea, but Surround WP, tested only in 2001, did not reduce aphid population growth rate. Neither particle film treatment was as effective as a standard application of esfenvalerate (DuPont Asana). In the laboratory, particle films suppressed pea aphid populations by up to 30%. M96-018 seemed to have some repellent activity based on aphid distributions after treating plants. When applied along with P. neoaphidis conidia, M96-018 but not Surround WP caused higher percentage of infection mortality of pea aphids by P. neoaphidis than occurred on controls treated only with P. neoaphidis conidia. P. neoaphidis conidia deposited on glass slides coated with M96-018, produced more germ tubes and secondary conidia than those deposited on untreated glass slides or slides treated with Surround WP. This result suggests that greater infection of pea aphids on plants treated with M96-018 is in part a result of a direct enhancement of fungal germination by the particle film.  相似文献

Alate formation and its importance in the population dynamics of Elatobium abietinum is examined. It is concluded that alate formation is related to high soluble nitrogen levels in Sitka spruce needles. In N.E. Scotland the proportion of the population developing as alatae was related to aphid density. The apparently differing status of alatae in S. England may be related to differences in the physiology of the host caused by heat input. In Scotland alate formation may cause a decline in spruce aphid populations when densities are very high but, at the densities normally encountered in Scotland and Germany only small proportions of the populations become alate. In these areas the population collapses in late June or early July occur in response to low soluble nitrogen levels in the spruce needles. The role of alate adults in the formation of new colonies following migration to uncolonised hosts is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Motivated by a community study on aphids and their fungal pathogens, three hypotheses were tested experimentally to investigate the influence of the fungal pathogen, Erynia neoaphidis Remaudière and Hennebert, on aphid population and community ecology.
2. Field experiments were performed in 2 years to test whether two susceptible aphid species on different host plants might interact through the shared fungal pathogen. No strong pathogen-mediated indirect interactions (apparent competition) between populations of pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris and nettle aphid Microlophium carnosum Buckton were detected.
3. In the first of the field experiments, pea aphids exposed to the fungus showed a weak tendency to produce more winged dispersal morphs than control populations not exposed to the fungus. In a laboratory test, however, no support was found for the hypothesis that the presence of volatiles from fungus-infected cadavers promotes production of winged offspring.
4. The response of the pea aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi Halliday to colonies containing hosts infected 1 and 3 days previously was assessed. Wasps initiated fewer attacks on 1-day-old infected colonies than on healthy colonies, with the numbers on 3-day-old fungus-infected colonies intermediate.  相似文献

Entomophthora planchoniana is an important fungal pathogen of aphids. Although Entomophthora chromaphidis has been considered a synonym for E. planchoniana, the two species are now separated, and E. planchoniana is reported not to grow in vitro. In this paper, we describe for the first time the isolation and cultivation of this species. Entomophthora planchoniana was isolated from a population of Ovatus crataegarius (Homoptera, Aphididae), which was infected by E. planchoniana only. The isolates did not sporulate, but the sequence of the small subunit rDNA and the restriction fragment length polymorphism patterns of the first part of the large subunit rDNA and the ITS II region confirm that the isolates were E. planchoniana. The isolated fungus grew in a medium consisting of Grace's insect cell culture medium supplemented with lactalbumin hydrolysate, yeastolate, and 10% fetal bovine serum or in GLEN medium with 10% fetal bovine serum. Vegetative cells of E. planchoniana were long and club-shaped and did not stain with Calcofluor, thus suggesting that they were protoplasts.  相似文献

The impact of natural enemies on cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), populations in cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., production systems in the southeastern United States was evaluated over 3 yr in irrigated commercial cotton fields. Fungal epizootics caused by the entomopathogen Neozygites fresenii (Nowakowski) Batko reduced aphid numbers to subthreshold levels in 1999, 2000, and 2001 and occurred consistently in early to mid-July in all 3 yr. Scymnus spp. were the most abundant aphidophagous predators, although other coccinellid species and generalist predators such as spiders, fire ants, heteropterans, and neuropterans also were present. Studies using arthropod exclusion cages demonstrated little impact of predators or parasitoids on aphid populations before fungal epizootics. Arthropod natural enemies were most abundant after epizootics and may have suppressed aphid populations late in the season. Seed cotton yield, and lint quality were not affected by aphicide applications in any year of the study. Implications of these findings for aphid management in the southeastern United States are discussed.  相似文献

Since the introduction of soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, from Asia, insecticide use in soybean has increased substantially in the north central United States. Insecticide seed treatments and aphid resistant soybean varieties are management tactics that may reduce reliance on foliar applications of broad-spectrum insecticides. Exploring potential nontarget impacts of these technologies will be an important step in incorporating them into aphid management programs. We investigated impacts of thiamethoxam seed treatment and Rag1 aphid resistant soybean on a fungal pathogen of soybean aphid, Pandora neoaphidis (Remaudière & Hennebert) Humber, via open plot and cage studies. We found that although thiamethoxam seed treatment did significantly lower aphid pressure in open plots compared with an untreated control, this reduction in aphid density translated into nonsignificant decreases in fungal disease prevalence in aphids. Furthermore, when aphid densities were approximately equal in seed treated and untreated soybean, no impact on aphid fungal disease was observed. In open plots, Rag1 resistant soybean experienced lower aphid pressure and aphid disease prevalence compared with a nonresistant isoline. However, in cages when aphid densities were equivalent in both resistant and susceptible soybean, resistance had no impact on aphid disease prevalence. The addition of thiamethoxam seed treatment to resistant soybean yielded aphid densities and aphid disease prevalence similar to untreated, resistant soybean. These studies provide evidence that thiamethoxam seed treatments and Rag1 resistance can impact P. neoaphidis via decreased aphid densities; however, this impact is minimal, implying use of seed treatments and host plant resistance are compatible with P. neoaphidis.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The parasitoid Aphidius ervi and the entomopathogenic fungus Pandora neoaphidis both require successful invasion of an aphid host to complete their life cycle. A shorter developmental period allows P. neoaphidis to out-compete A. ervi. Aphidius ervi may reduce this fitness cost by avoiding aphid colonies containing P. neoaphidis . Here the response of A. ervi towards P. neoaphidis was assessed using sequential experiments designed to replicate different stages of parasitoid foraging behaviour.
2. Entry rate experiments showed that A. ervi entered aphid colonies containing P. neoaphidis -sporulating cadavers and that there was no significant difference in the attraction of A. ervi to aphid-damaged Vicia faba plants containing either healthy Acyrthosiphon pisum or P. neoaphidis -sporulating cadavers.
3. Observational behavioural experiments indicated that the presence of P. neoaphidis did not affect the search time or total foraging time of A. ervi on V. faba plants infested with either healthy A. pisum or P. neoaphidis -sporulating cadavers.
4. In Petri dish bioassays using aphids infected with P. neoaphidis over a period of 120 h, A. ervi showed no difference in attack rate against uninfected aphids or living aphids infected with P. neoaphidis for 1, 24, 48, 72, or 96 h. However, sporulating cadavers (120 h infection) were not attacked.
5.  Aphidius ervi appears only able to detect the presence of P. neoaphidis once the host is dead and sporulation has started. The fitness of A. ervi may therefore be severely reduced when foraging in P. neoaphidis -infected aphid colonies.  相似文献

Recorded minimum temperatures of – 7 oC or lower noticeably reduced overwintering populations of the green spruce aphid, Elatobium abietinum, in north-east Scotland. It is suggested that, at these temperatures, ice formation in the needles of the host Sitka spruce, caused attached aphids to freeze. Aphid mortality also occurred when maximum temperatures did not rise above + 6 oC for prolonged periods, possibly as a result of starvation following an extended chill coma. A diagrammatic representation of the main factors affecting anholocyclic populations of E. abietinum during the winter is presented to emphasize the governing role played by temperature. The balance between mortality and recruitment determines the size of the population at the end of the winter, and this in turn determines the subsequent summer infestation. It should be possible, therefore, to predict aphid outbreaks either from winter temperatures or from the number of aphids present at the end of the winter. Temperature records obtained from integrating thermometers indicated that the inside of the lower crown tended to be the warmest part of the tree during the winter, resulting in greater aphid survival in the lower branches.  相似文献

The horned grebe (Podiceps auritus) population of the Magdalen Islands in the St. Lawrence Gulf (Québec, Canada) has declined sharply over the last decades. It is the only breeding population of this species in eastern North America with nearest breeding populations being >2500 km apart in western North America and Europe, We used three types of genetic markers: mitochondrial (mt) DNA ND2 sequence, α-enolase intron sequence, and 25 amplified fragment length polymorphism loci (AFLPs) to quantify the genetic diversity within the Magdalen Island population and to assess its genetic distinctiveness relative to populations from western Canada (five sites) and Iceland (one site). The Magdalen Island population retained a comparable amount of genetic diversity to the average diversity observed across all populations in all three markers. Horned grebe mtDNA sequences formed a monophyletic group and nearly all haplotypes present in Québec were found elsewhere. In the ND2 fragment, populations partitioned into two groups corresponding to subspecies (Iceland versus North American sites) and more strongly in three groups according to geographic disjunctions (Iceland versus Québec versus western Canada). In contrast, there was no evidence of structure between sites in the α-enolase intron. In the AFLPs, Iceland showed the greatest level of differentiation, followed by the Québec and British Columbia populations. For conservation purposes, we suggest that the Magdalen Islands population should be recognized as a separate unit.  相似文献

Bacterial symbionts in aphids are known to benefit the insect host and associated with aphid’s ecological adaptation. The pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum), an important legume pest worldwide, carries at least eight endosymbionts, providing a model system to study insect–bacteria interactions. However, species diversity and geographic variations of endosymbionts are unknown in Chinese populations; therefore, we characterized symbiont communities and diversity of 27 pea aphid samples from 13 geographic populations of China. Via amplicon high-throughput sequencing and diagnostic PCR, we found that bacterial communities of Chinese populations were dominated by Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. Among eight known endosymbionts, five (Buchnera, Serratia, Hamiltonella, Regiella, and Rickettsia) were detected by both methods, with a specific geographical distribution. The obligate symbiont, Buchnera, was present in all aphid samples, while the four facultative symbionts showed a significant geographic variation. Each population was randomly infected with distinct endosymbionts, ranging from three to five species. Serratia and Rickettsia showed relatively higher abundance in central regions of China, Regiella was predominant in eastern and western China, whereas Hamiltonella showed an extremely low abundance and was absent in four populations. Samples grouped by altitudes showed a significant diversity difference, whereas there was no significant difference between red and green body colors. Bacterial community structures of the Chinese pea aphid populations were mainly influenced by environmental factors, other than body colors. These data can guide the development of potential biocontrol techniques against this aphid.  相似文献

Aim The distribution of the genetic variation in long‐lived species is a combination of both, historical and current processes. In Nothofagus nervosa (Phil.) Dim. et Mil., the possible existence of multiple glacial refugia, the unidirectional gene flow along fragmented areas and the natural hybridization with the related species Nothofagus obliqua (Mirb.) Oerst. highlights as the most important factors responsible for modelling its genetic structure. The present study aims to find out the relative importance of these evolutionary processes in determining the distribution pattern of the genetic variation in N. nervosa. Location The study was carried out in north‐western Patagonia, Argentina. Twenty populations covering the entire distribution range of N. nervosa in Argentina were analysed. For comparison purposes, three populations from Chile were also included. Methods Genetic variation was detected using isozyme gene markers; diversity and differentiation parameters were calculated. A cluster analysis was performed and the correlation between genetic and geographical distances was tested. Results Levels of genetic variation were relatively high given the small distribution range of the species in Argentina. Genetic and geographical distances were not correlated and a longitudinal trend in the genetic variation was evident. Hotspots of diversity with rare and private alleles were observed among western populations, while hybrid seeds were found almost exclusively among eastern populations. Main conclusions The higher level of diversity observed in western populations could be related with the location of glacial refugia. Furthermore, it should also reflect low levels of gene flow given the eastward unidirectional winds. On the contrary, ancient and current interspecific hybridization processes would mainly cause the particular genetic constitution of the eastern populations. Evidence is presented supporting that glaciations and hybridization were the main factors shaping the distribution of the genetic variation in N. nervosa.  相似文献

The ancestors of rock ptarmigan Lagopus muta originated in the Beringia area well before the disruption of the Beringian land bridge. They spread westwards to Siberia and eastwards to the North American arctic and Greenland. The distribution of rock ptarmigan has been affected by glaciations restricting it to geographically limited refugia. Today the species has a circumpolar distribution in arctic tundra and alpine habitats, with up to 30 subspecies recognised based on morphological characters. We sequenced the mitochondrial control region for 72 individuals and genotyped 69 individuals for 12 microsatellite loci to investigate neutral genetic variation within and among five rock ptarmigan populations, Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia, Svalbard and Taimyr. Genetic structure among the studied samples was high, overall FST estimated from microsatellite loci was 0.18 and only one out of 16 mtDNA haplotypes was found in more than one population. Genetic variation ( h, π, He, allelic richness) was slightly lower in the Svalbard population than in other populations, suggesting a low effective population size, possibly due to isolation following colonisation. An unrooted network and a phylogenetic tree showed that the Scandinavian population has diverged from the other populations by at least ten mutational steps, probably due to independent colonisation of Europe and subsequent long-term isolation, and rules out Scandinavia as a source for colonisation of Svalbard. Alignment with partial control region sequences from other studies showed that the haplotype that was central in our network and found on Svalbard and in Taimyr, most likely corresponds to a haplotype found in Siberia, Alaska and the Canadian Arctic, but not in Greenland, Scandinavia and Iceland. This suggests an eastern origin of rock ptarmigan in Svalbard, although this question cannot be settled conclusively.  相似文献

An update on the cotton pest complex and its associated natural enemies in Madagascar is provided. Since the end of the 1970s, when the previous reports had been published, the population dynamics of the principal pests in Malagasy cotton have undergone considerable changes. The American bollworm Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lep., Noctuidae) is still a limiting factor for production and can be considered the key pest, whereas the Egyptian leaf worm Spodoptera littoralis Boisduval (Lep., Noctuidae) and the cotton aphid Aphis gossypii Glover (Hom., Aphididae) have become significant pests as a result of indiscriminate use of synthetic pyrethroids in the 1980s. New records of beneficials, in particular the discovery of the aphidopathogenic fungus Neozygites fresenii (Nowakowski) (Entomophthorales) in cotton aphid populations, are reported. Strategies to preserve predator populations in view of reducing disruptive insecticide treatments are discussed.  相似文献

Herbivorous insect species with narrow diet breadth are expected to be more prone to genetic differentiation than insect species with a wider diet breadth. However, a generalist can behave as a local specialist if a single host-plant species is locally available, while a specialist can eventually behave as a generalist if its preferred host is not available. These problems can be addressed by comparing closely related species differing in diet breadth with overlapping distributions of insect and host populations. In this work, diet breadth, genetic diversity and population differentiation of congeneric aphid species from southern beech forests in Chile were compared. While at the species level no major differences in genetic diversity were found, a general trend towards higher genetic diversity as diet breadth increased was apparent. The aphid species with wider diet breadth, Neuquenaphis edwardsi (Laing), showed the highest genetic diversity, while the specialist Neuquenaphis staryi Quednau & Remaudière showed the lowest. These differences were less distinct when the comparisons were made in the same locality and over the same host. Comparison of allopatric populations indicates that genetic differentiation was higher for the specialists, Neuquenaphis similis Hille Ris Lambers and N. staryi, than for the generalist N. edwardsi. Over the same host at different locations, genetic differentiation among populations of N. edwardsi was higher than among populations of N. similis. The results support the assumption that specialists should show more pronounced genetic structuring than generalists, although the geographical distribution of host plants may be playing an important role.  相似文献

Pandora neoaphidis is an aphid-specific entomopathogen that produces infective conidia. As aphid movement increases, so does the likelihood of contact with conidia. Volatile distress signals released in response to aphid infestation as an indirect defence against herbivory may affect aphid foraging and, therefore, the fungus-aphid interaction. In this study, two different methods were used to investigate the effect of plant volatiles and P. neoaphidis-sporulating cadavers on (1) the colonisation of Vicia faba plants by Acyrthosiphon pisum and (2) P. neoaphidis transmission. This study indicates that A. pisum does not avoid bean plants containing P. neoaphidis and that transmission of conidia occurs during plant colonisation and, to a lesser extent, during in situ feeding. Although significantly more aphids were recovered from damaged plants compared to undamaged plants, the likelihood of infection was not affected by previous infestation by aphids.  相似文献
