Endocrine profiles and reproductive output in European ground squirrels after unilateral ovariectomy
In the course of a long-term study on reproductive physiology and behaviour in female European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) we investigated interactions among reproductive timing, maternal effort and hibernation. To gain information on the state of follicular development shortly before hibernation, histological investigations of ovaries were carried out. To collect the ovaries, unilateral ovariectomy was chosen as the least invasive method. The aim of this study was to monitor patterns of hormone secretion, behavioural parameters and reproductive output in females after unilateral ovariectomy, and compare them with intact individuals to assess potential effects of the treatment. Reproductive performance including duration of gestation and lactation, litter size, and offspring mass at natal emergence were similar in treated and untreated individuals. Before weaning, plasma estradiol levels were higher in the hemicastrated group than in intact females. Progesterone concentrations tended to be lower in unilaterally ovariectomized females during gestation and postlactation. In both groups we measured cortisol metabolites in fecal samples to estimate basal adrenal activity. Untreated individuals had significantly higher cortisol levels than hemicastrated females during lactation. In all other phases no significant differences in patterns of cortisol excretion were found between the two groups. Prehibernatory body-mass did not differ between treated and untreated females. These results indicate that unilateral ovariectomy had no significant negative effects on reproductive timing and output in female European ground squirrels. Compensatory activity of the remaining ovary does occur, concerning estradiol secretion even a kind of overcompensation was reported. These elevated estradiol levels in unilaterally ovariectomized females could play a role in limiting the degree of follicular compensation. 相似文献

Belding's ground squirrels are seasonally breeding rodents that have a single annual mating season (ca. 3 weeks long) which begins shortly after their vernal emergence from a 7-month period of hibernation. In this study, changes in vaginal estrus were assessed among unmated captive females. Following a 7-month period in a coldroom, vaginal lavages were taken daily to monitor changes in estrous condition. Females were in vaginal estrus within 24-48 hr of removal from the coldroom. Rather than exhibiting repeated cycles, adults (greater than or equal to 2 years old) remained in prolonged estrus (typically 3-4 weeks, but 8-10 weeks in some cases), whereas yearlings exhibited similar but shorter and possibly periodic changes in vaginal condition. The difference between the two age classes persisted in a second year of testing, indicating that the preadult status of yearlings (in the first year of testing) did not primarily account for the difference. In another experiment, removal from the coldroom was delayed for 24 days relative to adults removed at a time coincident with emergence from hibernation of free-living females. The "delayed" adults showed persistent vaginal estrus for a shorter total duration, such that both groups reached anestrus at approximately the same time. Although territorial defense is a common form of reproductivecompetition among male vertebrates, the exact reproductiveconsequences of this behavior are often poorly understood.To explore relationships between territoriality and reproductivesuccess in a nongroup-living mammal, we quantified patterns
of space use, mating success, and fertilization success formales in a free-living population of arctic ground squirrels(Spermophilus parryii plesius). Because litters of this speciesare sired almost exclusively by a female's first mate, we predictedthat territory ownership would be associated with first accessto estrous females. During the 2-week period when mating occurred,each male in the study population attempted to defend a distinctportion of the habitat, although the success of this defensevaried among individuals. Twenty-six of 28 females monitoredmated with the male on whose territory they resided. However,the majority of females observed throughout estrus (65%; n= 20) also mated with at least one other male, indicating thatterritory ownership was not associated with exclusive accessto females. In contrast, territory ownership was significantly
associated with first access to estrous females; 20 (71.4%)of 28 females mated first with the male on whose territorythey resided. In this regard, the behavior of S. parryii plesiusparallels that of socially monogamous birds in which territorialdefense by males functions to deter extrapair copulations byfemales. Although territorial defense represents an important
component of male reproductive success in arctic ground squirrels,other aspects of male behavior (e.g., the ability to dominateagonistic interactions on the day of a female's estrus) arealso critical. We suggest that future studies of vertebratemating systems will benefit by viewing such defense as onlyone of multiple axes along which conspecific males compete foraccess to females. 相似文献

Summary We studied the reproductive success of female Columbian ground squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus) in southwestern Alberta for nine years. We defined reproductive success as the number of offspring surviving their first hibernation, classified as yearlings. The number of weaned juveniles explained one third of the variance in number of yearlings at emergence from their first hibernation the following spring, and much of the variance in individual reproductive success originated after weaning. Weight of adult females at emergence from hibernation was correlated with annual reproductive success. The mother's survival beyond weaning and the subsequent winter's snow accumulation had positive effects on annual reproductive success, whereas population density and summer temperature had negative effects. We found no effects on annual reproductive success of date of litter emergence, weight at emergence as a yearling, presence or absence of adult kin, distance from the natal site, location within the study area, winter temperature or summer precipitation. Age of first breeding did not affect lifetime reproductive success, which ranged from 0 to 19 yearlings produced over a lifetime. The greatest source of variation in lifetime reproductive success for females surviving to breeding age was offspring survival, followed by reproductive lifespan. 相似文献

In European ground squirrels Spermophilus citellus as in many ground squirrel species. late born litters are composed of fewer young than early born litters. Two alternative though not mutually exclusive hypotheses may explain this seasonal pattern of change in litter size. On the one hand. the production of few large young late in the season may be an adaptation to time limitations on the offspring. that have to complete growth and fattening prior to hibernation. Then one would expect a trade-off between offspring number and size as the breeding season progresses. At its extreme. this hypothesis would predict that total maternal effort should be equal independent of litter size. Alternatively. litter size may be determined by physiological limitations on the mother. in that highly constrained mothers breed later and produce smaller litters. Then one would expect reduced overall maternal effort in highly constrained mothers of smaller litters. In this case. a trade-off between litter size and offspring size would not be expected. We found that total maternal effort in terms of gestation length and the duration of lactation increased with increasing litter size. thus supporting the second hypothesis. Lactation was not terminated at natal emergence. It extended a relatively long period of time beyond the time of first litter emergence depending on litter size. During prolonged lactation. individual young of large litters made up body mass to young of small litters. As a consequence. juvenile weaning body mass was unaffected by litter size although offspring body mass at natal emergence was inversely related to litter size. This additional weight gain in young of large litters compensated for initial survival disadvantages and presumably affected fecundity at yearling age. 相似文献

Reproductive effort, factors affecting reproductive output and costs of reproduction were studied in primiparous yearling
compared to multiparous older female European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus). Yearling females weaned smaller litters than older ones. Litter size increased with posthibernation body mass at the expense
of slightly lighter young for yearling but not for older mothers. In older females, on the other hand, emergence body mass
influenced offspring mass, whereas litter size was affected by oestrus date. High reproductive effort entailed reproductive
costs in terms of reduced subsequent fecundity but not subsequent survival for both yearling and older females. The production
of large litters and long duration of lactation delayed subsequent oestrus, which, in turn, correlated negatively with litter
size. During the second half of lactation, oestradiol levels were significantly elevated, indicating the initiation of follicular
maturation processes. Oestradiol levels during that time correlated negatively with current, but positively with subsequent
litter size. We therefore assume that inhibitory effects of lactation on gonadal development may mediate the negative relationship
between reproductive effort and subsequent reproductive timing in adults. This effect is absent in yearlings because they
are reproducing for the first time. Reproductive output in yearlings was influenced by interactions between structural growth
and puberty.

The course of behavioral and vaginal estrus and patterns of circulating estrogens were followed in free-living European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) after their emergence from hibernation. Normally mating females were compared to a second group in an area where males had been removed from the population before female emergence. Both groups showed vaginal estrus, but the patterns differed. Mating shortened vaginal estrus to a 3-day period compared to 8 days in unmated females. The extent (cell number) of cell cornification during estrus and the cellular components (percentage distribution) of metestrus did not differ between the two groups. Females in the area without males had significantly higher estrogen levels during estrus and metestrus compared to those in the control area. European ground squirrels were found to be monestrous, as none of the unmated females reentered estrus after metor diestrus was detected. The prolongation of vaginal estrus in unmated females can be viewed as either a physiological inevitability or an adaptation to low mate availability. The extension is still relatively short compared to other sciurid species and perhaps a product of constraints producing a strict time frame for reproduction. 相似文献

In some hibernating species, an extended euthermic period before spring emergence has been reported during which testicular maturation occurred. In this study, we investigated whether male European ground squirrels Spermophilus citellus (Linnaeus, 1766) develop scrotal testes before or after the termination of hibernation. The course of testis development and testosterone concentrations were examined in young-of-year male ground squirrels (n = 4) before, during, and after their first hibernation. In the environmental chamber, all animals showed regular hibernation patterns with decreasing torpor bout lengths prior to the end of hibernation. Four weeks before hibernation ended, testosterone levels were elevated during spontaneous arousals. Testosterone concentrations peaked during the first 2 months post heterothermy and decreased thereafter. In 2 experimental males, testes descended from the inguinal region into the scrotum shortly before the end of heterothermy. The state of testis development and testosterone secretion corresponded to that found in semi-free-living males at spring emergence. Testis size increased in active animals to maximum widths during weeks 3 and 4 post heterothermy. Scrotal skin pigmentation was absent until heterothermy ended and developed during the first month thereafter. The data suggest that male S. citellus do not need a pre-emergence euthermic period for reproductive development. 相似文献

The role of white adipose tissue in development of the reproductive apparatus of male golden-mantled ground squirrels was assessed by surgical removal of fat (lipectomy) immediately prior to onset of hibernation or by manipulation of fat levels through food restriction for 5 wk preceding hibernation. Animals then were maintained without food at 6 degrees C, and they hibernated from November 1983 until April 1984. At that time, blood plasma was assayed for hormone levels, and body mass, body composition, and masses of the testes and seminal vesicle-prostate complex were determined. At autopsy, testes and sexual accessory organs were heavier in Control squirrels than in Food-Restricted or Lipectomized (LIPX) animals. Paired-testes mass was positively correlated with body mass. Testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels were uniformly low in animals sampled during torpor, but were elevated in 2 animals that had regained the euthermic state. The Food-Restricted animals spent more time in torpor than did the other two groups, and the percentage of decrease in body mass over the hibernation season was less for Food-Restricted than for LIPX or Control animals. Adequate lipid stores may be essential for the normal development of the reproductive apparatus of male ground squirrels. In the field, animals with insufficient fat stores may forego reproduction and thereby conserve energy for survival. 相似文献

Energetic trade‐offs in resource allocation form the basis of life‐history theory, which predicts that reproductive allocation in a given season should negatively affect future reproduction or individual survival. We examined how allocation of resources differed between successful and unsuccessful breeding female Columbian ground squirrels to discern any effects of resource allocation on reproductive and somatic efforts. We compared the survival rates, subsequent reprodction, and mass gain of successful breeders (females that successfully weaned young) and unsuccessful breeders (females that failed to give birth or wean young) and investigated “carryover” effects to the next year. Starting capital was an important factor influencing whether successful reproduction was initiated or not, as females with the lowest spring emergence masses did not give birth to a litter in that year. Females that were successful and unsuccessful at breeding in one year, however, were equally likely to be successful breeders in the next year and at very similar litter sizes. Although successful and unsuccessful breeding females showed no difference in over winter survival, females that failed to wean a litter gained additional mass during the season when they failed. The next year, those females had increased energy “capital” in the spring, leading to larger litter sizes. Columbian ground squirrels appear to act as income breeders that also rely on stored capital to increase their propensity for future reproduction. Failed breeders in one year “prepare” for future reproduction by accumulating additional mass, which is “carried over” to the subsequent reproductive season. 相似文献

Akt (or protein kinase B) plays a central role in coordinating growth, survival and anti-apoptotic responses in cells and we hypothesized that changes in Akt activity and properties would aid the reprioritization of metabolic functions that occurs during mammalian hibernation. Akt was analyzed in skeletal muscle and liver of Richardson's ground squirrels, Spermophilus richardsonii, comparing the enzyme from euthermic and hibernating states. Akt activity, measured with a synthetic peptide substrate, decreased by 60-65% in both organs during hibernation. Western blotting showed that total Akt protein did not change in hibernation but active, phosphorylated Akt (Ser 473) was reduced by 40% in muscle compared with euthermic controls and was almost undetectable in liver. Kinetic analysis of muscle Akt showed that S(0.5) values for Akt peptide were 28% lower during hibernation, compared with the euthermic enzyme, whereas S(0.5) ATP increased by 330%. Assay at 10 degrees C also elevated S(0.5) ATP of euthermic Akt by 350%. Changes in ATP affinity would limit Akt function in the hibernator since the muscle adenylate pool size is also strongly suppressed during cold torpor. Other parameters of euthermic and hibernator Akt were the same including activation energy calculated from Arrhenius plots and sensitivity to urea denaturation. DEAE Sephadex chromatography of muscle extracts revealed three peaks of Akt activity in euthermia but only two during hibernation suggesting isozymes are differentially dephosphorylated during torpor. Altered enzyme properties and suppression of Akt activity would contribute to the coordinated suppression of energy-expensive anabolic and growth processes that is needed to maintain viability during over weeks of winter torpor. 相似文献

Effects of hibernation on memory were tested in European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus). The animals were trained in summer to successfully accomplish two tasks: a spatial memory task in a maze and an operant task on a feeding machine. One group hibernated normally, and the other was prevented from hibernation by maintaining ambient temperature at 22 degrees C. In spring, the same tasks were repeated for both groups and their individual performances compared to the initial training phase. The experimental groups differed significantly in both tasks. The nonhibernating animals had higher levels of retention and needed significantly fewer trials to relearn the tasks than the group that had hibernated. In addition to testing the retention of conditioned tasks, social memory was also studied. The ground squirrels were given a social recognition test in spring with one familiar and one unfamiliar conspecific. In contrast to the conditioned tasks, social memory did not seem to be affected by hibernation. The results indicate negative effects of hibernation on the retention of conditioned tasks, which could produce important constraints on animals. A potential explanation for this memory loss might be changes in neuronal activity, which occur during hibernation. 相似文献

Summary Reproductive effort by yearling and older female Richardson's ground squirrels was studied over a 4-year period in southern Alberta by obtaining serial weight records from marked individuals to compare the mother's mass at critical points in the annual cycle (emergence from hibernation, estrus, parturition, and litter emergence) with her litter's mass at birth and weaning. Yearlings weighed only 80% of older adults at emergence from hibernation, but they mated at the same time as older females, attained adult mass coincident with pregnancy, and weaned litters that were not significantly smaller in size or mass than those of older females. Age and maternal mass were weak predictors of litter size and litter mass. Of the net increase in mass of the combined mother-litter unit during gestation, over half (60% of 139 g for yearlings; 52% of 127 g for older females) was attributable to an increase in the mother's own mass, whereas during lactation almost all of the net increase (93% of 545 g for yearlings; 96% of 567 g for older females) was attributable to an increase in the litter's mass. On a daily basis, deposition of mass in the litter was 6 times greater during lactation than gestation. On average, neonates weighed 2.3% (6.5 g) of maternal mass at birth and 23.1% (81 g) at emergence from the natal burrow; offspring masses at birth and at emergence were significantly negatively correlated with litter size. On average, litters weighed 16.3% (48 g) of maternal mass at birth and 157.5% (578 g) at emergence from the natal burrow. Compared with other hibernating sciurids, Richardson's ground squirrels have a similar offspring mass relative to maternal mass both at birth and at emergence from the natal burrow. However, because of the large litter size (typically 6–8), absolute reproductive effort, measured either as litter mass at birth or at natal emergence, is large for the body size of the species. 相似文献

This field study was aimed at examining hypothalamic involvement in the behavioral changes of male European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) before, during, and after the mating season. The effects of exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) application on androgen secretion and behavioral patterns were investigated. Animals were captured, bled, and injected intramuscularly with 40 ng/100 g of GnRH. A second plasma sample was collected 40 min after the treatment to document changes in testosterone secretion. Behavioral parameters such as intra-sexual aggression, scent marking, and home range size were compared on the days before and after the stimulation. In the first two phases, before female emergence and during mating, GnRH-injection caused increases in plasma testosterone. In the post-mating phase, initial plasma testosterone levels had decreased and no elevation could be induced. Sham treatment of controls had no effect in any phase. Conditional parameters like emergence body mass and testicular size covaried with androgen increases only in the pre-mating period. Behavioral changes after GnRH administration occurred during the pre-mating period. Intra-sexual aggression, scent marking, and home range size increased significantly in experimental individuals. Later, during mating and post-mating, we found no behavioral changes associated with the GnRH treatment or the testosterone increase. The results demonstrate changes in the endocrine and behavioral sensitivity to GnRH application, according to the phases of the active season. An exogenous pulse of GnRH can apparently release behavior in male European ground squirrels, which is normally context dependent with the emergence of females. 相似文献

A slight testicular recrudescense occurred just prior to immergence into A-H, but this development was not accompanied by a definitive increase in plasma testosterone levels or seminal vesicle weights. 3. Four lines of evidence were consistent with the hypothesis that FSH stimulates testicular MAO activity. 4.
