Ackerly, S. C. 1992 07 15: The origin and geometry of radial ribbing patterns in articulate brachiopods.
Geometric models for simple. radial ribbing in articulate brachiopods include (1) ribs radiating isometrically from the shell umbo. (2) divergence of thc ribs from some 'point' within the shell, and (3) reorientation of the ribs at right angles to the shell margin. Analyses of the Orthida, the ancestral taxon of articulate brachiopods, indicate that rib geometries are isometric in Early Cambrian taxa (model 1). but that by the Early Ordovician rib orientations are generally perpendicular to the shell margin (model 3). A combination of functional and morphogenetic Factors explains the ribbing geometries observed in orthide brachiopods.  相似文献

Ribs of Ostreoidea and Plicatuloidea are defined as antimarginal, that is, perpendicular to the margin throughout growth. Morphogenetically, these ribs are unique, since, unlike radial ribs, they are secreted by a homogeneous mantle margin. Based also on the reconstructed shell secretion cycle in Bivalvia, we propose that ribs of Ostreoidea and Plicatuloidea are formed by a mantle margin which, upon extension from the shell margin, stretches and folds by taking the preformed ribs as templates. In extending perpendicular to the margin (as in all Bivalvia growing isometrically), such a mantle extends the rib pattern antimarginally. Ribs of this kind are purely mechanical structures, as their arrangement depends on the mechanical properties of the mantle and on the environmental conditions. This explains the high irregularity of such ribbing patterns. The presence of antimarginal ribs in both the Ostreoidea and Plicatuloidea sheds light on their origin. The first known oyster, Actinostreon cristadifformis, probably derived from an antimarginally ribbed Prospondylidae gen. indet. in the Late Permian or Early Triassic. Antimarginally ribbed Triassic species formerly included in Placunopsis originated both the Dimyidae Atreta in the Late Triassic and Enantiostreon in the Mid Triassic, which was transitional to Plicatulidae. Therefore, Dimyidae and Plicatulidae are closely connected and grouped under Plicatuloidea, to which Ostreoidea is phylogenetically unrelated.  相似文献

Ribs appeared cryptically in the Middle Jurassic nautiloid Paracenoceras. These ribs were produced by crowding of growth lirae as a corollary of change in body size during paedomorphic evolution. Initially, they had no direct functional significance. Some other contemporary genera are found to have similar ribbing patterns, partially developed on either the flanks or venter of the adult body chamber.

Subsequently in nautiloid phylogeny, ribs spread all around the whorl, becoming analogous to those of contemporary ammonites. Shell rugosity is observed to occur with increasing frequency in post‐Triassic nautiloids, paralleling the trend in ammonites. This is believed to be an outcome of the ‘arms race’ known as the Mesozoic marine revolution. Ribbing that was not at first adaptive in these nautiloids was subsequently co‐opted as a defensive adaptation. The evolution of this structure is a good example of exaptation.  相似文献

Accurate rib seriation is essential in forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology for determination of minimum numbers of individuals, sequencing trauma patterns to the chest, and identification of central ribs for use in age estimation. We investigate quantitative methods for rib seriation based on three metric variables: superior (anterior) costo-transverse crest height (SCTCH), articular facet of the tubercle-to-angle length (AFTAL), and head-to-articular facet length (HAFL). The sample consists of complete but unseriated sets of ribs from 133 individuals from the documented (known age and sex) and undocumented skeletal collections of Christ Church Spitalfields, London. This research confirms the results of an earlier study (Hoppa and Saunders [1998] J. Forensic. Sci. 43:174-177) and extends it with the application of two new metric traits and further analyses of sex differences. Analyses of variance showed that SCTCH and AFTAL are significantly associated (P < 0.001) with rib number. Tukey tests of pairwise rib comparisons revealed that for two dimensions (SCTCH and AFTAL), the central ribs (3rd-6th) are significantly distinct from each other (P < 0.05). Using simple ranking of either the SCTCH or AFTAL traits, the proportion of correctly identified ribs within +/-1 position was 80%, compared to initial seriation using morphological methods (Dudar [1993] J. Forensic. Sci. 28:788-797; Mann [1993] J. Forensic. Sci. 28:151-155). Significant sex dimorphism was also identified for these two traits. Analysis of the HAFL trait produced somewhat equivocal results, suggesting that this variable is not reliable for rib seriation. The variable SCTCH proves to be the most useful dimension for seriation, and shows that all but the 7th-9th ribs can be distinguished from others in the sequence, with important results for the 4th rib, where ranking allowed identification in 86% of cases, consistent with morphological methods for intact ribs.  相似文献

Octopaminergic dorsal unpaired median (DUM) neurons of locust thoracic ganglia are important components of motor networks and are divided into various sub-populations. We have examined individually stained metathoracic DUM neurons, their dendritic projection patterns, and their relationship to specific architectural features of the metathoracic ganglion, such as longitudinal tracts, transverse commissures, and well-defined sensory neuropils. The detailed branching patterns of individually characterized DUM neurons of various types were analyzed in vibratome sections in which architectural features were revealed by using antibodies against tubulin and synapsin. Whereas DUM3,4,5 and DUM5 neurons (the group innervating leg and "non-wing-power" muscles) had many ventral and dorsal branches, DUM1 and DUM3,4 neurons (innervating "wing-power" muscles) branched extensively only in dorsal areas. The structure of DUM3 neurons differed markedly from that of the other DUM neurons examined in that they sent branches into dorsal areas and had differently structured side branches that mostly extended laterally. The differences between the branching patterns of these neurons were quantified by using currently available new reconstruction algorithms. These structural differences between the various classes of DUM neurons corresponded to differences in their function and biophysical properties.  相似文献

The role of new bone formation on visceral surfaces of ribs in the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) in past human populations has been explored by many researchers, using both skeletal remains with known causes of death and archaeological samples. This study focuses, firstly, on adult skeletons from the Coimbra Identified Skeletal Collection in Portugal and investigates the skeletal manifestations of individuals known to have died from TB; secondly, this study focuses on the role of rib lesions in the diagnostic criteria for TB. One hundred and fifty-seven males and 106 females aged between 22-87 years were examined; causes of death were assigned as pulmonary TB, extrapulmonary TB, and pulmonary non-TB; a control group, extrapulmonary non-TB, was selected from the remaining individuals. Of individuals with rib lesions, 85.7% (69/81) had pulmonary or extrapulmonary TB as an assigned cause of death, while 17.8% (16/90) of individuals with rib lesions had a non-TB cause of death. Rib lesions were significantly more common in individuals who had died from TB, although the lesions cannot be considered pathognomonic for TB. In individuals dying from pulmonary TB, ribs in the central part of the rib cage were most affected, at their vertebral ends. The lower part of the rib cage may be a marker for peritoneal TB, and "coral-like" new bone formation on ribs may be an indicator of neoplastic disease. Further work on rib involvement in TB in clinical contexts, and the study of further documented skeletal collections, are recommended.  相似文献

Buckman's first law of covariation states that in ammonoids, coarseness of ribs and other ornamentation correlates negatively with degree of compression (whorl height/width ratio) and involution. This ‘law’ has escaped several attempts at functional or physiological explanation. However, Buckman's first law becomes self‐evident, and almost collapses to a tautology, when we reword it as follows: Size of lateral and ventral ornamentation correlates with size of the aperture (its width and height, respectively). In a shell that is strongly compressed laterally, the diameter of the aperture, and hence the soft parts within, is small in the lateral direction. For such a shell, coarse lateral ribbing would imply impossibly strong relative compression and expansion of the soft body through the formation of a rib. Conversely, if the shell is depressed (compressed dorsoventrally), the diameter of the soft parts is small in the dorsoventral direction, and the ventral ribbing correspondingly small. Buckman's first law is thus simply a statement of proportionality that needs no special explanation. On the contrary, any departure from this ‘law’ would imply strong deformations of the soft body as ornamentation was formed. Measurements on the Triassic ammonite Pseudodanubites halli show that ventral ribs get relatively stronger on compressed specimens, in accordance with this view of Buckman's law. ? We defined a novel “branch length similarity” (BLS) entropy, S, on a simple network consisting of a single node and branches. This simple network is referred to as “unit branching network” (UBN) because UBNs are components of larger networks. As an application of BLS entropy, we considered the characterization of termite tunnel patterns because termite tunnel patterns can be broken down into a collection of simple units consisting of a single node and branches. These simple units correspond to UBNs. To this end, in additional to the entropy, we introduced the standard deviation (σ) of the difference in S between UBNs connected by a single tunnel branch. Forty simulated tunnel patterns were created for each of two termite species, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) and Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. These patterns were projected into <S>–σ phase space in order to assess their topological properties. This approach showed that for R. flavipes, their coordinates were relatively more clustered than those of C. formosanus. This result reflected that these two species were differently constrained by emergent property resulting from simple worker's tunneling behavior. We believe that the approach proposed in this study can be a useful tool to explore termite tunnel systems, but not limited to termite system.  相似文献

This study examines changing spatial patterns of botanical collections over a 400 year time frame, focussing on the collections at the Natural History Museum (BM) in comparison with global patterns. The Plant Collector Resource Database, which contains 68,000 collector records was used to generate 250,667 unique collector × country × date records. We observe an exponential increase in the number of collectors over time. The activities of collectors were investigated in 50-year time-slices from 1650–2000. We specifically considered the geographic scope of collections (i.e., countries in which collections were made), the depth of collections (i.e., the number of collectors per country) and the uniqueness of collections (i.e., the proportion not duplicated in other herbaria). Uniqueness was highest for the earliest time-slice. Collector activity is shown to be strongly influenced by extrinsic factors such as the development of trade and empire, which allowed for collections to expand in scope and depth, and conflicts, which reduced collecting activity. A striking finding concerns the uniqueness of collections through time. The considerable unique element of the collections in herbaria highlighted by this study provides a strong motivation for digitization efforts to ensure that collections are accessible to address key questions in systematics, biogeography, and ecology.  相似文献

A new approach using targeted sequence collections has been developed for identifying endogenous peptides. This approach enables a fast, specific, and sensitive identification of endogenous peptides. Three different sequence collections were constituted in this study to mimic the peptidomic samples: SwePep precursors, SwePep peptides, and SwePep predicted. The searches for neuropeptides performed against these three sequence collections were compared with searches performed against the entire mouse proteome, which is commonly used to identify neuropeptides. These four sequence collections were searched with both Mascot and X! Tandem. Evaluation of the sequence collections was achieved using a set of manually identified and previously verified peptides. By using the three new sequence collections, which more accurately mimic the sample, 3 times as many peptides were significantly identified, with a false-positive rate below 1%, in comparison with the mouse proteome. The new sequence collections were also used to identify previously uncharacterized peptides from brain tissue; 27 previously uncharacterized peptides and potentially bioactive neuropeptides were identified. These novel peptides are cleaved from the peptide precursors at sites that are characteristic for prohormone convertases, and some of them have post-translational modifications that are characteristic for neuropeptides. Delayed (or incomplete) ossification of developing fetal bones and wavy ribs are some of the most common skeletal variations encountered in regulatory guideline developmental toxicity studies. Although they tend to be regarded as minor effects, they can be quite sensitive and consequently may influence the study lowest-observed-adverse-effect levels (LOAELs), and thus, impact classification, labeling, and risk assessment. In this study, we review the underlying mechanisms of these skeletal variations, evaluate different scenarios in which they have been observed, offer guidance for their interpretation, and comment on their use for risk assessment. Both minor delays in ossification and wavy ribs seem to be readily repairable via postnatal skeletal remodeling, are not mechanistically linked to malformation, and often are seen in the presence of maternal or fetal toxicity. As such, these minor variations would not generally be considered adverse in and of themselves but should be interpreted in the context of other maternal and fetal findings, information available on normal skeletogenesis patterns, mode of action of the test agent, and historical control incidence using a weight of evidence approach.  相似文献

Neither kinematic nor stiffness properties of the rib cage during thoracic spinal motion were investigated in previous studies, while being essential for the accurate validation of numerical models of the whole thorax. The aim of this in vitro study therefore was to quantify the kinematics and elastostatics of the human rib cage under defined boundary conditions. Eight fresh frozen human thoracic spine specimens (C7-L1, median age 55 years, ranging from 40 to 60 years) including entire rib cages were loaded quasi-statically in flexion/extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation using pure moments of 5 Nm. Relative motions of ribs, thoracic vertebrae, and sternal structures as well as strains on the ribs were measured using optical motion tracking of 150 reflective markers per specimen, while specimens were loaded displacement-controlled with a constant rate of 1°/s for 3.5 cycles. The third full cycle was used to determine relative angles and strains at full loading of the spine for all motion directions. Largest relative angles were found in the main loading directions with only small motions at the mid-thoracic levels. Highest strains of the intercostal spaces were detected in the anterior section of the lowest fourth of the rib cage, showing compressions and elongations of more than 10% in all spinal motion planes. Elastostatic rib deformation was generally less than 1%. Rib-sternum relative motions exhibited complex motion patterns, overall showing relative angles below 2°. The results indicate that rib cage structures are not macroscopically deformed during spinal motion, but exhibit characteristic reproducible kinematics patterns.  相似文献

Dimorphism in the genus RichterellaAvram is confirmedon the basis of material collected in Ardeche (South east France) principally in the beds of the Fallauxi zone, from the localities of Le Pouzin and Broyon. The microconch, R. richteri (Oppel), lacks lateral lappets but a ventral horn, formed by the strongly projected forward secondary ribs, is present. The macroconch is «Lemencia praerichteriDonze & Enay. These two forms are united in the same species, R. richteri, and then in the same genus, Richterella. The microconch, which is generally better preserved than macroconch in the studied material, shows a greater variability of ribbing than previously thought, due to the poor illustrations of the lectotype of richteri (reproduced here) which showed only dichotomous ribs. The genus Richterella loses its original dimorphic sense and since its origins and its possible derivations are unknown, it became a taxon defined on morphological bases. The forms from Ardeche bear a greater resemblance to the Spanish ones than they do to the Roumanian forms. The stratigraphical and faunal contexts of Richterella in Ardeche are discussed in this work.  相似文献

Water flowing through the xylem from the roots to the leaves of most plants must pass through junctions where branches have developed from the main stem. These junctions have been studied as both flow constrictions and components of a hydraulic segmentation mechanism to protect the main axes of the plant. The hydraulic nature of the branch junction also affects the degree to which branches interact and can respond to changes in flow to other branches. The junctions from shoots of two conifer species were studied, with particular emphasis on the coupling between the downstream branches. Flow was observed qualitatively by forcing stain through the junctions and the resulting patterns showed that flow into a branch was confined to just part of the subtending xylem until a considerable distance below the junction. Junctions were studied quantitatively by measuring flow rates in a branch before and after flow was stopped in an adjacent branch and by measuring the hydraulic resistance of the components of the junction. Following flow stoppage in the adjacent branch, flow into the remaining branch increased, but considerably less than predicted based on a simple resistance analogue for the branch junction that assumes the two branches are fully coupled. The branches downstream from a junction, therefore, appear to be limited in their interconnectedness and hence in their ability to interact.  相似文献

Summary By use of an antiserum against the crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) several types of bilaterally symmetrical neurons have been mapped quantitatively in the ventral nerve cord and in the brain of the meal beetle, Tenebrio molitor. The general architecture of these neurons was reconstructed from peroxidase-antiperoxidase-labelled whole-mount preparations. From the subesophageal to the seventh abdominal ganglia two types of neurons show a repetitive organization of contralateral projection patterns in each neuromere. The first type has few branches in the central neuropil and a distinct peripheral projection. The second type is characterized by an elaborate central branching pattern, which includes ascending and descending processes. Some of its peripheral branches were found to supply peripheral neurohemal areas. In the protocerebrum, 10 CCAP-immunoreactive neurons occur with projections into the superior median protocerebrum and the tritocerebrum. Immunopositive neurons were mapped in larval and various pupal stages, as well as in the adult. All types of identified neurons were found to persist throughout metamorphosis maintaining their essential structural and topological characteristics. The CCAP-immunoreactive neurons of T. molitor are compared with those described for the locust. Putative structural homologies of subsets of neurons in both species are discussed.  相似文献

Posilović, H., & Bajraktarević, Z. 2010: Functional morphological analysis of evolution of ribbing in pliocene viviparid shells from Croatia. Lethaia, 10.1111/j.1502‐3931.2009.00209.x. This paper provides a functional analysis of Pliocene freshwater gastropods from the phylogenetic lineage of Viviparus neumayri to Viviparus ornatus. On this section of the phylogenetic line, it is possible to follow the continuous evolution of the shell ornamentation (shouldering and rib formation) from ancestral V. neumayri with smooth shell to V. ornatus with spiral ribs. The shell morphology and possible structural function of rib development is discussed from the analytical point of view, but also by Finite Element Modelling. Spiral rib development in the viviparids is not correlated with shell thickening, but rather with strengthening of the shell is achieved through development of spiral ribs, with direct biomechanical and evoloutionary significance. □Croatia, functional morphology, gastropod shell evolution, Pliocene, viviparid evolution.  相似文献

Determining scapular position is a major issue in reconstructing the skeletal systems of extinct quadruped archosaurs and mammals, because the proximal portion of the scapulae has no direct skeletal joint with the vertebrae or ribs. When quadrupeds stand or walk, their trunk is suspended between the forelimbs by the serratus muscles, which arises from the lateral sides of the “thoracic” ribs and inserts into the proximal portion of the costal surface of the scapula. Therefore, the “thoracic” ribs are subjected to a static or dynamic vertical compression between the lifting force from the muscle and the gravitational force from the vertebral column. To investigate the body support function of the ribs, we analyzed the mechanical strength of the ribs of extant tetrapods by the two‐dimensional finite element method, and compared the degree of strength through their craniocaudal scapular positions. The result of this simulation showed that the “thoracic” ribs of quadrupeds, to which the serratus muscles attach, have a relatively higher strength against compaction than the other ribs. In bipeds, however, we did not find a similar correlation between the strength of ribs and the serratus muscle. This implies that the location of robust ribs is associated with the arrangement of the serratus muscle, and provides a probable candidate for determination of the scapular position for extinct quadruped archosaurs and mammals.
