Experiments were conducted to study the progress of purple blotch disease of garlic caused by Alternuria porri in the field, to determine the relationship between garlic leaf age and susceptibility to Alternaria porri, and also to assess loss in bulb characters due to purple blotch of garlic. Per cent disease severity and number of purple blotch lesions on four garlic genotypes of known susceptibility, Sel-10 (highly susceptible), G-41 (highly susceptible), IC-49382 (moderately susceptible) and IC-49373 (moderate to less susceptible) were monitored from bulb formation to bulb maturity at weekly intervals. Lesions appeared early on highly susceptible cultivars, Sel-10 and G-41. Rapid progress of disease development was noticed during the last 3 wk before bulb maturity. Peak severity at the maturity of the crop was significantly higher on highly susceptible genotypes. No definite correlation could be established between number of lesions and disease severity. A logistic curve was fitted to predict the disease progress on different weeks before bulb maturity. Levels of leaf tissue found damaged by A. porri at weekly intervals from bulb initiation to bulb maturity were significantly lower on younger leaves than on older leaves. Leaves that emerged 7 wk before bulb maturity required more than a 5 wk period to reach 50% leaf damage, whereas leaves emerging 2, 3 and 4 wk before bulb maturity exceeded 50% leaf damage within a 2–3 wk period. Individual garlic leaves became more susceptible to purple blotch as they aged and emerging leaves were more susceptible the closer they emerged to bulb maturity. Per cent loss in bulb weight and bulb volume was found to be significantly higher on highly susceptible genotypes. No significant reduction in number of cloves/bulb was observed. We propose 4 wk before bulb maturity as the action threshold for initiation of fungicidal application to prevent damaging levels of disease.  相似文献

Summary The central connections of the goldfish olfactory bulb were studied with the use of horseradish peroxidase methods. The olfactory bulb projects bilaterally to ventral and dorsolateral areas of the telencephalon; further targets include the nucleus praeopticus periventricularis and a caudal olfactory nucleus near the nucleus posterior tuberis in the diencephalon, bilaterally. The contralateral bulb and the anterior commissure also receive an input from the olfactory bulb. Contralateral projections cross in rostral and caudal portions of the anterior commissure and in the habenular commissure. Retrogradely labeled neurons are found in the contralateral bulb and in three nuclei in the telencephalon bilaterally; the neurons projecting to the olfactory bulb are far more numerous on the ipsilateral side than in the contralateral hemisphere. Afferents to the olfactory bulb are found to run almost entirely through the lateral part of the medial olfactory tract, while the bulb efferents are mediated by the medial part of the medial olfactory tract and the lateral olfactory tract. Selective tracing of olfactory sub-tracts reveals different pathways and targets of the three major tract components. Reciprocal connections between olfactory bulb and posterior terminal field suggest a laminated structure in the dorsolateral telencephalon.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Success during the early stages of the life-history of alien plants is essential for invasion to occur. The reproductive components of plant invaders have mostly been studied in species reproducing sexually but little is known about invaders that depend exclusively on vegetative reproduction. In this paper, the importance of the different recruitment stages on population growth is quantified and, thus, the invasion potential of the South African annual geophyte Oxalis pes-caprae invading Mediterranean ecosystems is assessed. METHODS: Tests and experiments were conducted across Menorca (Balearic Islands) to analyse the spatial variability of Oxalis pes-caprae reproductive components (i.e. bulb production, bulb bank, bulb predation, bulb mortality, bulb dormancy, bulb germination, plant establishment and survival). KEY RESULTS: Oxalis pes-caprae has a transient bulb bank that remains dormant in the soil during summer. High levels of bulb predation after dispersal, followed by bulb mortality during summer or a failure to germinate in autumn were the most critical factors limiting plant establishment. Bulb germination was high. However, plant establishment and bulb production is constrained by intraspecific competition, but is not affected by soil disturbance. No symptoms of spatial discordance could be found between recruitment stages because the spatial variability of the life cycle was extremely low at all the scales examined (i.e. among populations, habitats and microsites). It was estimated that, on average, 4 % of bulbs can become plants the following year and the field rate of population increase (lambda) to be 0.08. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that invasion is constrained by post-dispersal bulb predation, loss of viability of the propagule bank due to summer drought and high intraspecific competition. However, a high spatial concordance between recruitment stages and probably a high propagule pressure due to human and livestock bulb dispersal determine the success of this invader across Menorca Island.  相似文献

The structure of the penial bulb and male efferent duct system of Grania species may be used in addition to setal pattern and spermathecal shape to distinguish species. Six penial bulb types are distinguished: (1) a simple, small, glandular bulb surrounding the male pore; (2) a small, glandular bulb, with a large, associated, dorso-medial gland mass; (3) a small glandular bulb, medial to the male pore, with an elongate male bursa (the aglandular sac), the vas deferens exitting directly into the invaginated male pore; (4) a glandular bulb with an aglandular sac and a small, cuticular stylet embedded in the bulb, extending from the ectal end of the vas deferens; (5) a glandular bulb and an aglandular sac with a long stylet extending from the vas deferens, through the bulb into the sac; and (6) glandular bulb reduced or absent, with or without an aglandular sac; with a long stylet and other prominent modifications, usually muscular, of the vas deferens. The details of the male duct structure were consistent within specimens grouped on the basis of setal distribution and shape and detailed spermathecal structure. Diverse male duct patterns are found within the polytypic species G. macrochaeta and G. postclitellochaeta. The positions of the spermathecal and male pores in their respective segments are distinctive for some species.  相似文献

Plants of two Narcissus cultivars were dissected periodicallyover a year to study initiation, growth, and dry-weight changesof flowers and daughter bulb units in relation to the positionof the daughter bulbs in the branching system. A Narcissus bulbis a branching system comprising terminal and lateral bulb units;the former bear both terminal and lateral bulb units, but lateralscontain only terminal ones. This basic pattern may be modifiedby the failure of lateral bulb units or the development of supernumeraryones. Differences in bulb unit size, in scale and leaf number,and in flowering, related to position in the branching system,are probably due to the initiation of lateral bulb units somemonths after terminal ones. This affects the growth and behaviourof the laterals and daughter bulb units borne by these lateralsin the next generation. Bulb units live about four years; after the loss of their leafblades and flowers, the scales and leaf bases act as storageorgans whose weight increases or decreases according to thecarbohydrate status of the plant. Growth of bulb units showsan externally controlled alternation of rapid and slow growth.This is likely to be an effect of day length on bulbing.  相似文献

Glutamic acid decarboxylase activity in the main and accessory olfactory bulbs throughout the sexual cycle of the rat was studied. The effect of male pheromonal secretion on enzyme activity during proestrus and estrus day was also tested. The enzyme activity showed circadian rhythm during the estrous cycle. This rhythm was disrupted during diestrus-2 afternoon in the main bulb and came back during proestrus afternoon. A different pattern of enzyme activity was present in the accessory bulb, since the circadian rhythm was altered during proestrus morning, returning during estrus afternoon. Male odor exposition did not change enzyme profile activity during proestrus day and during estrus morning in the main bulb. In contrast, in the accessory bulb the olfactory stimuli induced opposite changes to that found in rats from the vivarium during proestrus. Comparison of enzyme activity in olfactory stimuli-deprived rats with that of pheromone-stimulated rats during proestrus showed that male odor exposure specifically affects accessory bulb enzyme activity. It is concluded that the changes of the olfactory bulb GABAergic system during proestrus and estrus day, or that evoked by odor stimuli, demonstrate the discriminative response of this system between the accessory olfactory bulb and the main olfactory bulb.  相似文献

The histological and associated histochemical phenomena occurringin the developing bud of Hordeum bulbosum were investigated.Naturally the bulb is formed by swelling of the lowest internodeof the spike-bearing stern. Bulb initiation began by a rapidcell division followed by cell elongation. The bulb form wasachieved by forming cell files directed diagonally outward inthe upper part and by a periphery meristern contributing cellsto the middle and the lower parts of the bulb internode. Starchaccumulated in the cells before bulb initiation and was utilizedcompletely only in the elongating cells when bulb elongationoccurred. High content of nucleic acids and total protein, demonstratedby specific stainings, was observed in the cytoplasm of cellsof the intercalary meristem at each internode. Growth, bulb development, partition of dry weight between leafblades and bulbs, and the interception of solar radiation weremeasured in overwintered crops of five cultivars of bulb onionwith different maturity dates sown on successive dates in threeseasons. The onset of bulbing was later the later maturity ofthe cultivar. Later sowing did not delay the onset of bulbingbut it did delay maturity. There was little mean differencebetween cultivars in the duration of bulb growth defined asthe interval between onset of bulbing and maturity, but therewere considerable differences between cultivars within a season,and between seasons for a given cultivar. Duration of bulb growthranged from 11 to 46 days with a mean of 35 days. Increases in total shoot dry weight during bulb developmentand, in the absence of much bolting, bulb dry-matter yieldswere linearly related to the total radiation intercepted duringbulb growth. These relationships were similar to those reportedfor other crops in Britain. Radiation interception during thephase of bulb growth was low compared with other crops, witha mean value of 49 per cent and a maximum of 65 per cent. Thepercentage of solar radiation intercepted during bulb developmentwas higher from early sowings than from later ones, particularlyin early maturing cultivars. The harvest index was high, withtypically more than 80 per cent of the shoot dry weight in bulbsat maturity. The localization of four subtypes of Ca2+-dependent protein kinase C (PKC) in the main and accessory olfactory bulb was examined by immunocytochemistry by using specific antibodies against each PKC subtype. In the main olfactory bulb, alpha-PKC was densely localized in a large number of granule cells and in a few tufted cells, and faint immunoreactivity was seen in some periglomerular cells. betaI-PKC was intensely found in periglomerular cells and tufted cells. gamma-PKC immunoreactivity was present in the external plexiform layer, the internal plexiform layer, and the granular layer, but the immunoreactivity was found only in the neuropils. Little, if any, betaII-PKC was seen in the main olfactory bulb. On the other hand, the intense immunoreactivity for betaII-PKC was seen in periglomerular cells of the accessory olfactory bulb. The betaI-PKC and gamma-PKC were also present in periglomerular cells of the accessory olfactory bulb, while alpha-PKC was localized only in granule cells. Double staining study in the accessory olfactory bulb showed that betaII-PKC was present in the GABAergic periglomerular cells, while betaI-PKC localized to the non-GABAergic periglomerular cells; gamma-PKC was expressed in both GABAergic and non-GABAergic cells. These findings suggest that four calcium-dependent subtypes of PKC play different roles in the olfactory bulb and definite expression of betaII-PKC strongly suggested the involvement of this subtype in a specific function in the accessory olfactory bulb.  相似文献

The ablation of olfactory bulb induces critical changes in dopamine, and monoamine oxidase activity in the brain stem. Growing evidence supports the participation of this telencephalic region in the regulation blood pressure and cardiovascular activity but little is known about its contribution to hypertension. We have previously reported that in the olfactory bulb of normotensive rats endothelins enhance noradrenergic activity by increasing tyrosine hydroxylase activity and norepinephrine release. In the present study we sought to establish the status of noradrenergic activity in the olfactory bulb of deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertensive rats. Different steps in norepinephrine transmission including tyrosine hydroxylase activity, neuronal norepinephrine release and uptake were assessed in the left and right olfactory bulb of DOCA-salt hypertensive rats. Increased tyrosine hydroxylase activity, and decreased neuronal norepinephrine uptake were observed in the olfactory bulb of DOCA-salt hypertensive rats. Furthermore the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase and its phosphorylated forms were also augmented. Intriguingly, asymmetrical responses between the right and left olfactory bulb of normotensive and hypertensive rats were observed. Neuronal norepinephrine release was increased in the right but not in the left olfactory bulb of DOCA-salt hypertensive rats, whereas non asymmetrical differences were observed in normotensive animals. Present findings indicate that the olfactory bulb of hypertensive rats show an asymmetrical increase in norepinephrine activity. The observed changes in noradrenergic transmission may likely contribute to the onset and/or progression of hypertension in this animal model.  相似文献

An ultrastructural study of the sinus gland of the terrestrial isopod, Oniscus asellus, reveals that this structure consists of two regions: the bulb, which is attached by a narrow stalk to the optic lobe, and the lateral extension, which extends from the bulb along the optic tract to the compound eye. The bulb has a distal region containing only neurosecretory terminals, and a proximal region containing terminals, glial cells, and axons that give rise to the distally located terminals. In total, the sinus gland contains five types of terminals which can be distinguished by their location and the appearance of their neurosecretory granules. Three terminal types are located in the bulb and two in the lateral extension. The size of the terminals in the bulb varies among the three types, but the number of terminals is approximately the same for each type. Conversely, the two terminal types in the lateral extension are similar in size, but differ in number. Axons of two terminal types in the bulb can be traced to the central region of the protocerebrum; axons of one terminal type in the bulb and of terminals in the lateral extension can be traced to the optic lobe.  相似文献

The olfactory bulb plays a central role in olfactory information processing through its connections with both peripheral and cortical structures. Axons projecting from the olfactory bulb to the telencephalon are guided by a repulsive activity in the septum. The molecular nature of the repellent is not known. We report here the isolation of vertebrate homologs of the Drosophila slit gene and show that Slit protein binds to the transmembrane protein Roundabout (Robo). Slit is expressed in the septum whereas Robo is expressed in the olfactory bulb. Functionally, Slit acts as a chemorepellent for olfactory bulb axons. These results establish a ligand-receptor relationship between two molecules important for neural development, suggest a role for Slit in olfactory bulb axon guidance, and reveal the existence of a new family of axon guidance molecules.  相似文献

对资源圃保存的212份大蒜种质资源的表型性状进行了系统鉴定,分析表明我国大蒜种质资源的表型变异丰富。主成分分析表明,29个性状可以归并为反映植株生长发育、产品特征和产量构成的8个主成分;进一步的聚类分析将所有资源分为特点明显的2类5亚类。为了避免质量性状在种质评价中的主导作用,与产量相关的鳞茎数量性状的主成分分析显示,前3个主成分累积贡献率达74.83%,第一主成分中鳞茎重、鳞茎直径、鳞茎高和鳞芽数是影响产量的主要因子。主坐标排序将所有资源分为6类。通过综合评价,将大蒜鳞茎产量分为6个级别,筛选出单产大于15 t/hm2的资源3份。  相似文献

Bulb formation in Allium cepa L. cv. Dorata di Parma, was promoted by ethylene (Ethrel 120 mg l−1) treatments. Application of the antiethylene complex silverthiosulphate (0.01 m M ) inhibited ethylene-induced bulb formation, but did not affect photoperiod-induced bulb formation. When the inhibitor of ethylene biosynthesis, aminoethoxyvinylglycine, was applied at 0.04 to 4 mg l−1 to onion plants under inductive photoperiodic conditions the bulb promotion was unaffected. Therefore, Ethrel-induced bulb formation does not appear to be related to endogenous control of bulbing.  相似文献

Continuous turnover of neurons in the olfactory bulb is implicated in several key aspects of olfaction. There is a dramatic decline postnatally in the number of migratory neuroblasts en route to the olfactory bulb in humans, and it has been unclear to what extent the small number of neuroblasts at later stages contributes new neurons to the olfactory bulb. We have assessed the age of olfactory bulb neurons in humans by measuring the levels of nuclear bomb test-derived (14)C in genomic DNA. We report that (14)C concentrations correspond to the atmospheric levels at the time of birth of the individuals, establishing that there is very limited, if any, postnatal neurogenesis in the human olfactory bulb. This identifies a fundamental difference in the plasticity of the human brain compared to other mammals.  相似文献

Electrical stimulation of nerve fibers emerging from different positions of the olfactory epithelium was used to determine the receptive fields for 52 olfactory bulb neurons in the hamster. The responses of olfactory bulb neurons were recorded extracellularly with metal-filled micropipettes. Suprathreshold stimuli (500 microA) were applied to each of eight standard epithelial positions spaced approximately 250 microns apart, and the position, or positions, which, when stimulated, produced a response in the bulb were taken as an index of the neuron's receptive field. The results indicate that most bulb neurons have very localized receptive fields limited to only one or two stimulating positions. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant correlation between the location of a neuron's receptive field in the olfactory epithelium and the recording depth of the neuron in the olfactory bulb (Spearman rank correlation coefficient, rs, 0.67, P < 0.001). These findings demonstrate that in the mammalian olfactory system there exists a topographical projection of input from localized regions in the epithelium onto the second-order neurons in the olfactory bulb.  相似文献

The currrent California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) recovery plan entails increasing the reproductive rate via replacement-clutch manipulation of eggs. During the period from 1983 to 1985, 15 eggs were removed from wild nesting pairs for artificial incubation. The eggs were incubated at a dry bulb temperature of 36.4°C in modified forced-air Lyon Electric incubators. The incubation humidity was adjusted for individual eggs based on weight loss data (water = weight), 25.6–30.0°C wet bulb (41.0–63.0% Relative Humidity (RH)). The chicks were hatched initially under forced-air conditions of 36.1°C dry bulb, 31.1–01.7°C wet bulb (70.0–73.0% RH). In 1984, hatching parameters were changed to still-air conditions, 36.1°C dry bulb (top of the egg), 35.0°C dry bulb (bottom of the egg), 31.1–31.7°C wet bulb (70.0-73.0% RH). Tactile and auditory stimulation was utilized during the pip-to-hatch interval. From among 15 eggs collected, 13 hatched, and 12 condor chicks were raised successfully (hatchability: 86.7%; survivability: 92.3%).  相似文献

以兰州百合和亚洲系"精粹"百合为试材,探讨了鳞茎发育过程中不同部位淀粉、可溶性糖含量和淀粉酶活性的变化。结果表明,母鳞茎作为百合萌发阶段的代谢源,其外部鳞片是代谢更为活跃的部位。淀粉和可溶性糖含量同时增加是百合新鳞茎开始膨大的标志。蔗糖是百合鳞茎中可溶性糖的主要形态,还原糖的变化体现了碳水化合物的供应及转化。淀粉酶在百合鳞茎发育过程中对调节和平衡碳水化合物的形态起重要作用。  相似文献

We tested the capacity of the soil-dwelling predatory mite, Hypoapsis aculeifer , to control mites attacking lily bulbs. Experiments in the greenhouse and in the field showed that in the absence of predatory mites populations of the bulb mite, Rhizoglyphus robini , on lily bulbs increased, whereas the release of predatory mites either slowed down the increase - as observed in the field - or caused the bulb mites populations to decrease - as observed in the greenhouse. In all cases the population of predatory mites increased as long as bulb mite densities were not too low. However, within the first week after predator release there was usually a sharp decline to 10-40% of the original number released. Greenhouse experiments on intact lily bulbs in pots, boxes and 1 m 2 plots with peat soil showed that when released in a ratio of 1 predator to 2 or 5 prey, the predatory mite, Hypoaspis aculeifer , suppressed populations of bulb mites to less than 10 individual per bulb within 6 weeks. Elimination of bulb mites was observed only when the predator-to-prey ratio at release was equal to 3:1. Field experiments in 2 m 2 plots with intact bulbs in rather compact sandy soil showed that when released in ratio of 1 predator to 1 or 2 prey, the predatory mite, H. aculeifer , did not cause the population of bulb mites to decrease, but it did reduce their population growth. The initial predator-to-prey ratios required to achieve suppression (ca 1:2) or elimination (3:1) in the soil environment are much higher than those required for bulb mite elimination when lily bulb scales were embedded in a medium of vermiculite (ca 1:20). Among the possible causes are: (1) the initial losses of predators in the greenhouse and even more so in the field due to mortality and/or emigration from the experimental plots; (2) the lower temperatures in the greenhouse and especially in the field, which slow down the growth and predation processes and thereby delay prey extinction; and (3) the spatial complexity of the soil environment which creates refuges for the bulb mites.  相似文献

The effect of hypoxia and application of manganese, cobalt, and magnesium ions on electrical responses of the frog olfactory bulb to adequate stimulation and to direct electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve were studied. The slow potential evoked by adequate stimulation and the associated inhibition of the afferent input of the olfactory bulb were found to be much more resistant to inhibition of synaptic transmission by all methods used than the postsynaptic components of the orthodromic response and associated postsynaptic inhibition. A slow potential was recorded even when synaptic transmission in the olfactory bulb was completely blocked by magnesium ions. It is concluded that the slow potential of the olfactory bulb and inhibition of its afferent input are nonsynaptic in nature. It is postulated that the slow potential reflects mainly depolarization of glial cells in the glomerular layer of the bulb evoked by accumulation of potassium ions. The possible mechanisms of inhibition of the afferent input are discussed.  相似文献
