1. Spatial heterogeneity of resources may influence competition among individuals and thus have a fundamental role in shaping population dynamics and carrying capacity. In the present study, we identify shelter opportunities as a limiting resource for juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.). Experimental and field studies are combined in order to demonstrate how the spatial distribution of shelters may influence population dynamics on both within and among population scales. 2. In closed experimental streams, fish performance scaled negatively with decreasing shelter availability and increasing densities. In contrast, the fish in open stream channels dispersed according to shelter availability and performance of fish remaining in the streams did not depend on initial density or shelters. 3. The field study confirmed that spatial variation in densities of 1-year-old juveniles was governed both by initial recruit density and shelter availability. Strength of density-dependent population regulation, measured as carrying capacity, increased with decreasing number of shelters. 4. Nine rivers were surveyed for spatial variation in shelter availability and increased shelter heterogeneity tended to decrease maximum observed population size (measured using catch statistics of adult salmon as a proxy). 5. Our studies highlight the importance of small-scale within-population spatial structure in population dynamics and demonstrate that not only the absolute amount of limiting resources but also their spatial arrangement can be an important factor influencing population carrying capacity.  相似文献

Haemopexin (Hx) is an acute phase plasma glycoprotein, mainly produced by the liver and released into plasma where it binds heme with high affinity and delivers it to the liver. This system provides protection against free heme‐mediated oxidative stress, limits access by pathogens to heme and contributes to iron homeostasis by recycling heme iron. Hx protein has been found in the sciatic nerve, skeletal muscle, retina, brain and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Recently, a comparative proteomic analysis has shown an increase of Hx in CSF from patients with Alzheimer’s disease, thus suggesting its involvement in heme detoxification in brain. Here, we report that Hx is synthesised in brain by the ventricular ependymal cells. To verify whether Hx is involved in heme scavenging in brain, and consequently, in the control of iron level, iron deposits and ferritin expression were analysed in cerebral regions known for iron accumulation. We show a twofold increase in the number of iron‐loaded oligodendrocytes in the basal ganglia and thalamus of Hx‐null mice compared to wild‐type controls. Interestingly, there was no increase in H‐ and L‐ferritin expression in these regions. This condition is common to several human neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease in which iron loading is not associated with an adequate increase in ferritin expression. However, a strong reduction in the number of ferritin‐positive cells was observed in the cerebral cortex of Hx‐null animals. Consistent with increased iron deposits and inadequate ferritin expression, malondialdehyde level and Cu–Zn superoxide dismutase‐1 expression were higher in the brain of Hx‐null mice than in that of wild‐type controls. These data demonstrate that Hx plays an important role in controlling iron distribution within brain, thus suggesting its involvement in iron‐related neurodegenerative diseases.  相似文献

We extend the existing work on the time-optimal control of the basic SIR epidemic model with mass action contact rate. Previous results have focused on minimizing an objective function that is a linear combination of the cost associated with using control and either the outbreak size or the infectious burden. We instead, provide analytic solutions for the control that minimizes the outbreak size (or infectious burden) under the assumption that there are limited control resources. We provide optimal control policies for an isolation only model, a vaccination only model and a combined isolation–vaccination model (or mixed model). The optimal policies described here contain many interesting features especially when compared to previous analyses. For example, under certain circumstances the optimal isolation only policy is not unique. Furthermore the optimal mixed policy is not simply a combination of the optimal isolation only policy and the optimal vaccination only policy. The results presented here also highlight a number of areas that warrant further study and emphasize that time-optimal control of the basic SIR model is still not fully understood.  相似文献

Summary A marginal fitness theorem is derived for the allocation of a limited resource among alternative activities that have effects on the fitness of an individual. The marginal advantage theorem states that at the evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS), the marginal gains from increasing each of the allocations (expressed as partial derivatives of the fitness advantage of a rare mutant) are equal. The theorem is true for all proportional allocations (a + b + c + ...=j), regardless of the number of allocations, the nature of the response curves describing the direct effects of the allocations [f(a), etc.], or the way the effects of different allocations combine into fitness. The theorem is extended to size-number compromises and packaging strategies. The marginal advantage theorem is used to derive general theorems about the marginal effects of allocations [f (a), etc.] at the ESS and matching rules concerned with the total fitness to cost ratios of allocations at the ESS. The marginal advantage theorem is applicable to diverse allocation strategies, and provides a method for obtaining ESS allocations for any number of allocations and their components.  相似文献

We present a design to quantify fitness consequences of jasmonate-induced responses in plants that are competing for limited resources with a conspecific. Under both high and low nitrogen supply rates, uninduced (control) Nicotiana attenuata plants growing next to a plant induced with 250 μg methyl jasmonate (MJ) yielded more seed capsules than control plants competing with another control plant. We conclude that there is a opportunity benefit for control plants growing next to an induced plant. Initially, MJ-induced plants grew more slowly, but by senescence they had produced the same number of seed capsules as control plants that had competed with another control plant. Replacement series showed that the fitness of MJ-induced plants is not influenced by the competitive status of their neighbour plant. We argue that competitive designs are useful tools for evaluating the phenotypic costs of ecologically important traits.  相似文献

The relative importance of niche requirements and dispersal limitation in controlling the landscape‐scale distribution of plants is still contentious. Local occurrence and abundance of alpine plants are commonly thought to be driven by abiotic site conditions due to pronounced environmental gradients over short distances. However, explicit tests of the additional role of dispersal‐related processes for alpine plant distribution patterns are lacking. Here, we combine niche‐based species distribution models with variables describing patch size and connectivity to evaluate if, besides abiotic limitations, spatial habitat configuration affects the occurrence and abundance of six plant species inhabiting patchy snowbed mosaics of the northeastern Calcareous Alps in Austria. Moreover, we assess if eventual effects of spatial patch configuration are more clearly detectable when calculating connectivity based on parameterized mechanistic dispersal kernels for both wind and animal vectors instead of using nearest neighbour metrics. We show that patch size and connectivity are significantly correlated to the occurrence of all and to the abundance of four out of six study species, although the relative importance of these variables, as compared to niche constraints, varies among species. In addition, connectivity measures derived from parameterized dispersal kernels were more closely related to occupancy, and in particular to abundance patterns than a simple nearest neighbour metric. The fitted kernels also suggest that dispersal by alpine chamois plays an important role for inter‐patch seed exchange. We conclude that, despite evident abiotic limitations, recurrent local extinctions and delayed re‐colonizations indeed play a role for the distribution of our study species, and that alpine plants may hence be less in equilibrium with their abiotic environment than commonly thought. Moreover, the relatively high long‐distance dispersal probabilities of animal kernels indicate that the ability of alpine plants to adapt their ranges to a rapidly warming climate may, among other factors, depend on the availability of dispersal services by large mammals.  相似文献

Porphyromonas gingivalis is an etiologic agent of periodontal disease in humans, which has been linked to an increased risk for atherosclerosis-related events. In this study, we examined the effect of P. gingivalis infection on human macrophages with respect to foam cell formation, the hallmark of early atherogenesis, and the potential of P. gingivalis to induce its uptake by these cells. Human monocyte-derived macrophages were incubated with low density lipoprotein and infected with P. gingivalis FDC381 or its fimbriae deficient mutant, DPG3. Consistent with a role for fimbriae in this process, strain 381 significantly increased foam cell formation as compared to DPG3. Recovery of viable P. gingivalis in antibiotic protection experiments was significantly higher for strain 381 than for DPG3. By transmission electron microscopy, the wild-type strain was shown to adhere to and enter THP-1 cells. These results suggest that properties of P. gingivalis which render it capable of adhering to/invading other cell types may also be operative in macrophages and play an important role in its atherogenic potential.  相似文献

Summary Methotrexate (MTX), a folic acid analogue, is used in cancer chemotherapy in low or high doses. Addition of MTX to proliferatingTetrahymena cultures revealed that, irrespective of the concentration of MTX (1–50 mM), the cells doubled once during a 6-hour exposure and twice during a 24-hour exposure; the normal generation time is 3 hours. MTX had a dose-dependent effect on the maximal number of cell doublings reached after 72 hours, thus 5 1/2 and 3 1/2 doublings were found in 1 and 10 mM MTX, respectively. Massive cell death was observed after a 4-day exposure. At all concentrations of MTX, the rate of endocytosis was unaffected initially but decreased to 60% of the control value after 24 hours. Conspicuously, small refractive, or electron dense, granules accumulated in MTX-treated cells; these granules are presumably lysosomes accumulating MTX for defecation. The mitochondrial substructure became altered in MTX-treated cells; after a 24-hour exposure to MTX the mitochondria were almost depleted of tubules. This reduction of the number of mitochondrial tubules occurred gradually, apparently correlated with division of the organelles. Recovery was also studied of cells exposed for 1 or 3 hours to 10 mM MTX. During the first 24 hours after removal of MTX, the cells were affected in a manner similar to that described for cells exposed continuously to MTX, also with respect to the altered substructure of mitochondria; however, the recovering cells resumed the normal rate of cell proliferation after 4 cell doublings. These longlasting effects, of even a short exposure ofTetrahymena to MTX, may in part explain the cause of the severe side effects accompanying MTX chemotherapy.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a new formulation for the Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) and minimum makespan objective. The new formulation exploits three variables, one associated with the start time of an activity, one associated with the finish time of an activity, and the last one associated with the amount of an activity in progress at a given time. A calmodulin-dependent protein phosphatase isolated from bovine brain [Tallant, E.A., & Cheung, W.Y. (1983) Biochemistry 22, 3630-3635] is stimulated by limited trypsinization to the same activity level as that by calmodulin. Prolonged trypsinization caused gradual loss of phosphatase activity, a process retarded in the presence of Ca2+, and even more in the presence of calmodulin. Trypsinized phosphatase, when fully activated, had a molecular weight of 60 000 and was composed of two protein species of 43 000 and 16 000 daltons. Trypsinization decreased the Km of phosphatase for casein from 10.8 to 1.2 microM and increased the Vmax from 4.9 to 30.9 nmol (mg of protein)-1 min-1. The proteolyzed enzyme was insensitive to calmodulin and did not bind to a calmodulin-Sepharose affinity column. It was, however, stimulated by Ca2+, requiring 0.4 microM Ca2+ for half-maximal activation. Both native and trypsinized phosphatase were stimulated by Mn2+ to a level considerably higher than that by Ca2+.  相似文献

From a conservation point of view, species’ tolerances towards disturbance are often generalised and lack reference to spatial scales and underlying processes. In order to investigate how average typical species react to habitat fragmentation and disturbance, we adopted a multi-species approach to address occupancy patterns of five specialised dune arthropods (butterflies Hipparchia semele, Issoria lathonia; grasshopper Oedipoda caerulescens; spiders Alopecosa fabrilis, Xysticus sabulosus) in recently fragmented coastal dune habitats which are subjected to varying levels and modes of local disturbance, i.e. trampling by cattle or people.Occupancy patterns were assessed during two successive years in 133 grey dune fragments of the Flemish coastal dunes (Belgium, France). By treating species as a random factor in our models, emphasis was placed on generalisations rather than documenting species-specific patterns.Our study demonstrates that deteriorating effects of local disturbance on arthropod incidence cannot be interpreted independent of its landscape context, and appear to be more severe when patch area and connectivity decrease. When controlled for patch area and trampling intensity, the probability of species occupancy in poorly connected patches is higher under cattle trampling than under recreation. Incidences additionally decrease with increasing intensity of cattle trampling, but increases with trampling by tourists.This study provides evidence of mode- and landscape-dependent effects of local disturbance on species occupancy patterns. Most importantly, it demonstrates that trampling of sensitive dune fragments will lead to local and metapopulation extinction in landscapes where trampling occurs in a spatially autocorrelated way, but that the outcome (spatial patterns) varies in relation to disturbance mode, indicating that effects of disturbance cannot be generalised.  相似文献

Growth rate varies widely among species and the trade-off between growth rate and storage or maintenance traits is a principal axis of variation between species. Many plant species have substantial root stores, but very little is known about how growth rate modifies responses of these stores to defoliation and other stresses. Species with different growth rates are predicted to respond in distinct ways, because of variation in the pre-defoliation allocation to storage. Here, we quantified the dynamics of stored carbohydrates in seven species with varying growth rate, following defoliation in a pot experiment. For faster growing species, there was significant reduction in carbohydrate concentration following defoliation, followed by relatively fast recovery, whereas for slower growing species, carbohydrate concentration levels remained relatively invariant across treatments. Results for total carbohydrates mirrored those for concentration, but were not as significant. Our findings were consistent with the idea that faster growing species respond more rapidly than slower growers to defoliation, through changes in carbohydrate pool concentrations. Growth rate as an indicator of life-history and ecological strategy may therefore be key to understanding post-defoliation recovery and storage strategies.  相似文献

Associational effects occur when the attack rate on a resource depends on neighbouring resources in the environment. These effects are predicted to result from mismatches experienced by the consumer organism in resource selection along hierarchical search levels. As resource selection depends on sensory information used during search behaviour, we expected that different physiological states of an insect might modulate the outcome of associational effects due to differences in resource selection. We used Drosophila melanogaster, as a model organism for olfactory‐guided behaviour in insects, to study the effects of mating induced behavioural changes on associational effects between two alternative resources. We found that mating has no effect on the ability of D. melanogaster to locate resource patches, but rather affects the perception of the resources within the patch. Consequently, we only found associational effects in the experiments with unmated females and not in the experiments with mated females. Our results suggest that the lack of associational effects for mated females resulted from changes in the use of short‐range olfactory cues, leading to random selection among the resources. In conclusion, our results suggest that the physiological state of an insect modulates associational effects by affecting resource selection rates within the patch.  相似文献
