Abstract:  In the laboratory we investigated a kaolin-based crop protectant, Surround® WP, that was mixed in a spray carrier (94% water, 2% methanol, 4% Triton X100) and applied as particle film against gypsy moth Lymantria dispar (L.) and forest tent caterpillar Malacosoma disstria Hubner. Paired-choice feeding tests showed that gypsy moth larvae were significantly (P < 0.05) less disposed to feed on red oak Quercus rubrus L. treated with high concentrations (60 and 120 g/l carrier) of kaolin than on untreated foliage. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between gypsy moth's consumption of kaolin-treated and untreated red oak when given a single food choice, but the adults were less inclined to oviposit on the kaolin-treated surfaces than on controls. However, no kaolin treatment completely deterred gypsy moth feeding or oviposition. Kaolin particle film did not influence forest tent caterpillar feeding and there were insufficient data to evaluate the effect of kaolin on the species' oviposition. The spray carrier did not increase the efficacy of the kaolin, but as an independent, albeit impractical treatment it constrained feeding by both insect species but did not affect gypsy moth oviposition. These initial laboratory findings suggest that applying kaolin-based particle film to forests would present significant challenges; but if these could be surmounted, the technique might assist in the management of gypsy moth but not likely in that of forest tent caterpillar.  相似文献

Myrmarachne assimilis , an ant-like jumping spider (Araneae, Salticidae) from the Philippines and a Batesian mimic of Oecophylla smaragdina , the Asian weaver ant, aggregates on leaves in the company of its model. All stages in this species' lifecycle are sometimes found in nest complexes (nests connected to each other by silk). Although aggregating and forming nest complexes is known for a few other salticid species, the aggregations of M. assimilis have some unusual characteristics. In particular, reproductive females appear to be most frequently found with other reproductive females in nest complexes, suggesting that nest complexes have a role in parental care and are often built by females joining other females. An egg-survival experiment showed that eggs in solitary nests were more often destroyed than were eggs in nest complexes, suggesting that, for females of M. assimilis , choosing aggregations as oviposition sites may be functionally akin to life insurance for their progeny.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 475–481.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of different doses of the antioxidant α‐lipoic acid (LA) administered by intraperitoneal injection on the detoxifying capacity (activity of glutathione‐S‐transferase, GST) and oxidative damage (lipids and proteins) in the pompano, Trachinotus marginatus. The plasma glucose levels showed that there were no differences between the treatments (P > 0.05). In the brain, GST activity was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in fish injected with 40 mg LA kg?1 when compared with the control group. In the muscle, GST activity was not influenced by LA treatment (P > 0.05). In the liver, fish injected with 20 mg LA kg?1 showed higher GST activity than the control group (P < 0.05); however, higher doses (40 and 60 mg LA kg?1) led to a reduction of GST activity in the liver, which was comparable to that observed in the control group (P > 0.05). The two highest LA doses (40 and 60 mg kg?1) had opposite effects, depending on the tissue examined: LA was an antioxidant in the brain, reducing lipid peroxidation (P < 0.05), and a pro‐oxidant in the liver, augmenting oxidative lipid damage (P < 0.05). The latter effect was accompanied by an increase in the free iron concentration in the liver at higher LA doses. These results indicate the need to thoroughly evaluate the antioxidant effects on aquatic organisms, since at some doses and/or in some organs their beneficial effects can be lost.  相似文献

Abstract: Qualitative or semi-quantitative visual assessments are most often used for estimating population size of herbivorous insects. The precision of these estimates, however, is often difficult to establish. A 'simulation game' with the horse chestnut leafminer, Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dimic (Lep., Gracillariidae) shows that visual, semi-quantitative assessments can provide accurate information. Damaged areas of 411 horse chestnut leaves collected in 100 sites were closely related to mine numbers despite some variability in mine and leaf size ( R 2 = 0.915; n  = 411; P < 0.001). On the basis of this relationship, two methods of population assessment are compared: (i) digital image processing of leaf damage and (ii) visual assessment using a damage key reflecting the relative infested area on each leaf (0, 0%; 1, 0–2%; 2, 2–5%; 3, 5–10%; 4, 10–25%; 5, 25–50%; 6, 50–75%; 7, 75–100%). Both methods used to estimate damage presented a similar, close relationship to the 'real' numbers of mines ( R 2 = 0.858; n  = 777; P < 0.001 for image processing and R 2 = 0.905; n  = 777; P < 0.001 for visual assessment). The potential of using visual assessments as an accurate and fast method in situ at the tree scale is discussed.  相似文献

To understand the ecological role of secondary plant compounds in host location by phytophagous insects it is important to consider attraction at different scales in natural populations. The cabbage seed weevil, Ceutorhynchus assimilis, which lays eggs in pods of crucifers where the larvae feed on seed, is attracted to purified extracts of specific glucosinolate-derived volatiles. We considered the possibility that C. assimilis adults are attracted to and preferentially attack patches of plants and/or individual plants producing these volatiles. Using discrete natural populations of Brassica oleracea and Brassica nigra, we found that oviposition was highest in populations of B. oleracea producing high amounts of 3-butenylglucosinolate. No links were found between the other glucosinolates, 2-propenylglucosinolate, 2-hydroxy-3-butenylglucosinolate, 1-indolylmethylglucosinolate or 1-methoxy-3-indolylmethylglucosinolate, and oviposition in B. oleracea. B. nigra, which contains only 2-propenylglucosinolate, was not attacked by C. assimilis. Within populations of B. oleracea, neither oviposition nor the number of seeds eaten was related to the glucosinolate profiles of individual plants. We suggest that C. assimilis adults use 3-butenylglucosinolate-derived volatiles to locate host populations, whereas other cues determine oviposition on individual plants. The consequences of these results for natural selection of glucosinolate phenotypes are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract: Laboratory studies on the ovipositional preference of Earias insulana Boisd. females indicated that the insect preferred Gossypium hirsutum to the other test plants. An overall comparison between the plant parts revealed that a significantly (P < 0.05) greater number of eggs were laid on fruit followed by squares and leaves. Maximum oviposition occurred on Abutilon indicum fruit, followed by G. hirsutum and Dombeya spectabilis leaves, G. hirsutum squares and leaf petioles and Thespesia populnea terminal buds. Increased oviposition on these parts was attributed to the presence of trichomes, and in some cases grooves, together with the favourable food factors.  相似文献

Before oviposition, a Lygus rugulipennis (Poppius) (Heteroptera: Miridae) female explores the substrate with her mouthparts, performing ‘probing’ behaviour which eventually leads to a choice of oviposition site. In this study, morphological and behavioural observations were carried out in order to define the mechanisms through which female bugs recognise suitable oviposition sites. The morphological study was conducted using electron‐microscopy techniques, while the behavioural experiments aimed at the temporary (using ZnSO4) or permanent (i.e., cauterization of the rostrum and ablation of both stylets and labium) inactivation of sensory structures located in the labium tip and in the stylets, which are probably involved in oviposition site selection. The tip of the labium of L. rugulipennis females is characterised by the presence of 11–12 uniporous gustatory sensilla which are innervated by 3–6 sensory neurones. One aporous mechanoreceptor is located ventrally on both areas of the labium tip. Other aporous mechanosensilla are found more proximally on the labium. ZnSO4 labium tip treatment did not affect oviposition site selection, while stylet amputations, as well as rostrum cauterisations, resulted in almost complete oviposition failure. Labium tip‐ablated females oviposited similarly to control females. These results suggest that the sensory neurones associated with the stylets are involved in the location of the oviposition site. Uniporous gustatory sensilla on the labium tip are not involved in the final steps of the oviposition behaviour. However, they seem to play a role in assessing the suitability of the substrate as a food source.  相似文献

Abstract:  Yield-related responses of cowpea plants to artificial infestation of Aspavia armigera , at the onset of podding, at different densities, 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 pairs per cage were studied on cowpea in caged pots and field plots. With increasing insect density there was a corresponding significant increase (P < 0.05) in pod and seed damage, and reduction in pod length, numbers of pods per plant and seeds per pod, seed weight and total yield. Pod production was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in infested plants than in the control; at 1- and 16-pair levels, pod production increased by 75% and 81% over the uninfested control in the pot and field experiments respectively. Then again, with increase in insect density there was a progressive high-magnitude increase in pod abortion reaching 252.6% and 200% at the 32-pair level on potted and field cowpea, respectively, resulting in drastic reductions in the number of harvestable pods. Cowpea compensation mechanism was lost completely as insect population increased. The lowest density of A. armigera at which significant reduction (P < 0.05) occurred in total seed yield compared with the control was one pair. The relationship between insect density and pod damage, and yield was best described by a quadratic + linear fit, while that between insect density and seed damage was best fit as polynomial with very high significant r -values. Chi-squared analysis showed that the models derived from pot and field data were similar.  相似文献

Adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) and hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) are major novel triglyceride lipases in animals. The aim of this study was to determine if there are differences in the porcine ATGL ( pATGL ) and HSL genes between Jinhua pigs (a fatty breed) and Landrace pigs (a leaner breed). In addition, the effect of TNFα and pATGL-specific siRNA ( pATGL-siRNA ) on the expression of pATGL and HSL in porcine adipocytes was also examined. Compared with Landrace pigs, the body weight ( BW ) of Jinhua pigs was lower ( P <  0.01), while intramuscular fat content (in the longissimus dorsi muscle), as well as the back fat thickness and body fat content were higher ( P <  0.01). The expression of pATGL and HSL mRNA in Jinhua pigs was lower ( P <  0.01) in subcutaneous adipose tissue, and greater ( P <  0.01) in longissimus dorsi muscle compared with Landrace pigs. In vitro treatment of porcine adipocytes with TNFα decreased ( P <  0.01) the glycerol release and the gene expression of pATGL , HSL and PPARγ in porcine adipocytes. Furthermore, transfection with pATGL-siRNA significantly decreased ( P <  0.01) the expression of pATGL , while it had no effect on the expression of HSL . Treatment with 25 ng/ml TNFα in conjunction with pATGL-siRNA significantly decreased ( P <  0.01) the expression of pATGL and HSL in cultured porcine adipocytes. These results provide useful information to further the understanding of the function of pATGL and HSL in porcine lipid metabolism, which should be applicable to the regulation of fat deposition and improvement of meat quality.  相似文献

Anaphes iole Girault is a frequent parasitoid of Lygus spp. eggs in the United States, and has potential as a biological control agent against Lygus hesperus Knight in different crops. Feeding and oviposition by L. hesperus induce emission of plant volatiles, but studies to date do not address the role of plant volatiles in the host-searching behavior of A. iole. In this study, a four-arm olfactometer was used to test the responses of female parasitoids to odors emanating from cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L., Malvaceae) plants damaged by L. hesperus females, L. hesperus males, larvae of the nonhost Spodoptera exigua Hubner, or mechanically, or to odors from L. hesperus females alone. In addition, various plants damaged by L. hesperus females were evaluated in the olfactometer: cotton, alfalfa (Medicago sativa L., Fabaceae), common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris L., Asteraceae), annual ragweed (Ambrosia artemisifolia L., Asteraceae), and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L., Amaranthaceae). In all olfactometry bioassays, treatment odors were compared against three controls (humidified air). Results showed that A. iole females were consistently attracted to odors derived from different plant–L. hesperus complexes, while odors from plants subjected to nonhost (S. exigua) or mechanical damage and L. hesperus females alone were not attractive or only variably attractive. These findings suggest that while searching for hosts A. iole females use specific volatiles induced by L. hesperus feeding and oviposition to locate hosts inhabiting a wide variety of plants, including annual and perennial species from four plant families. It was suggested that future research should seek to identify the chemical elicitors involved in the release of plant volatiles attractive to A. iole females.  相似文献

Abstract:  The potato tuber moth is a noxious pest of potato in stores, where the use of repellent plants is an environmentally sound alternative to the application of chemical pesticides. We evaluated the protective effect of native Minthostachys species (Lamiaceae) against tuber infestation by the potato tuber moth in a rustic store in Cusco, Perú. We covered potato tubers with dried shoots of Minthostachys spicata and Minthostachys glabrescens and compared tuber damage with a control treatment of maize straw. We also conducted a no-choice oviposition bioassay in the laboratory, testing the oviposition deterrence of essential oils of M. spicata , M. glabrescens and Minthostachys mollis at natural concentrations. We recorded the number of eggs laid by mated moths on filter paper treated with essential oils of each of the three species and on two control treatments: hexane and untreated blank. Finally, we tested for differences in oviposition deterrence among five full-sib families of potato tuber moth raised under identical conditions. We found that dried, chopped leaves and flowers of Minthostachys species reduced the percentage of tuber damage in stores in comparison with the control (5% vs. 12%), but no difference in protection was found between species. Essential oils at natural concentrations deterred moth oviposition, reducing the number of eggs laid by about 80% compared with the control treatments; again, there were no significant differences between Minthostachys species. Finally, whereas we detected among-family variation in oviposition on filter papers treated with essential oils, no difference was found in the number of eggs laid on control substrates. Therefore, there was genetic variation for oviposition deterrence in the potato tuber moth and resistance to repellent plants might evolve thereafter.  相似文献

This study examines the diet of the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) in the western basin of Lake Erie. As an invasive benthic feeder, the round goby has the potential to affect smallmouth bass and other native species. Round goby (n = 100) were collected during summer 2011 and stomach contents were examined to determine diet patterns and possible ontogenetic diet shifts. Individual round goby were grouped by sex, size (small < 65 mm, large ≥ 65 mm), depth of habitat (shallow < 2 m, deep > 5 m), and habitat type (natural shallows, anthropogenically modified shallows, and deep waters). Gut fullness ranged from 10 to 100% with 23 stomachs presenting 100% fullness. Round goby consumed 27 different food items including abiotic (sand grains, gravel), floral (algae, fine leaved vascular plants), and fauna items. The Index of Relative Importance (IRI) and comparative z‐tests were used to assess correlations and differences. Two‐way z‐tests revealed a significant difference in mouth gape related to size (z = ?5.56377, P = 2.64e‐08), and habitat depth (z = 3.34262, P = 0.00083). A significant linear correlation was also found between mouth gape standardized by head length (HL) for both males (P = 2.63e‐9) and females (P = 1.3e‐4). Two‐way z‐tests also revealed a significant difference in gonadosomatic index (GSI) related to sex (z = 6.07727, P = 6.11248e‐10), but not size. A significant difference in gut fullness was also found related to sex (z = ?3.34743, P = 0.00082), habitat depth (z = 3.16336, P = 0.00156), and habitat type (z = ?2.7398, P = 0.00615). IRI values demonstrated a diet selective of veliger mussels (IRI = 2462.01), juvenile mussels (IRI = 1073.03), cladocerans (IRI = 4804.31), and chironomids (IRI = 1012.12). While previous studies have focused on round goby diet shifts from macroinvertebrates to bivalves, most studies did not evaluate changes in diet among multiple categories. Furthering knowledge of multiple aspects of goby diet may aid in developing management techniques to deter future round goby invasion.  相似文献

Background  Assessment of cerebrospinal (CSF) monoamine metabolites 5-hydroxyindoeacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA), and the serotonin precursor tryptophan (TRP), in chimpanzees may help in understanding the neurobiology underlying aggressive, impulsive behavior in humans and non-human primates.
Methods  Two CSF samples were obtained from 11 peripubertal chimpanzees 8 months apart and were assayed for monoamine metabolite and TRP concentrations.
Results  Substantial inter-individual stability was observed for 5-HIAA (n = 11; r = 0.83, P  <   0.001) and HVA (r = 0.91, P  <   0.001). Females had significantly higher concentrations of 5-HIAA compared to males (F1,8 = 7.31; P  <   0.05). Levels of 5-HIAA (r = −0.62, P  <   0.05), HVA (r = −0.86, P  <   0.001) and TRP levels (r = −0.67; P  <   0.05) decreased with age.
Conclusion  Close parallels were observed between chimpanzees and humans with respect to absolute levels, sex effects, ontogeny, and 5-HIAA-HVA correlations, supporting the potential utility of the measures in understanding relationships between monoamine functioning and behavior in chimpanzees and humans.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Herbivory can induce resistance in a plant and the induced phenotype may be disfavoured by subsequent herbivores. Yet, as the distance between plants in a population increases, limited mobility may make a herbivore more likely to feed and oviposit on host plants in its immediate surroundings.
2. The present study tested whether a herbivore's preference and distribution across plants with different induced phenotypes was influenced by the spatial distribution of plants. A fragmented population of Solanum dulcamara plants was created. This consisted of discrete, spatially separated patches with different histories of damage, either herbivory from adult flea beetles ( Psylliodes affinis ), tortoise beetles ( Plagiometriona clavata ), or mechanical damage. Each patch was separated by 7 m and consisted of 12 plants that were spaced 30 cm apart. Then a fixed number of adult tortoise beetles were introduced to each patch, and movement and oviposition within and between spatially separate homogeneous patches (receiving one type of damage) were compared with movement and oviposition within heterogeneous patches (containing all three types of damage) over the growing season.
3. Flea beetle and tortoise beetle herbivory consistently induced different phytochemical responses in S. dulcamara (polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase), and adult tortoise beetles avoided oviposition on the flea beetle induced plants within heterogeneous patches. However, between homogeneous patches, plant phenotype did not influence oviposition. Colonisation by naturally occurring flea beetle adults followed a similar pattern.
4. These results suggest that the heterogeneity of plant phenotypes can influence herbivore choice and distribution at small but not large spatial scales.  相似文献

1. Planktonic ciliates were examined during a spring–summer period (November 1998–April 1999) in the ultraoligotrophic Lake Moreno Oeste (41°5' S and 71°33' W, 758 m a.s.l), which belongs to the Nahuel Huapi System (Patagonia, Argentina). The lake is deep ( Z max=90 m) and warm monomictic.
2. Sampling was performed at a mid-lake station, where vertical profiles of temperature and light were measured in situ , and samples for bacteria and ciliates enumeration were taken throughout the water column.
3. The peritrich Ophrydium naumanni , a freshwater pelagic ciliate with endosymbiotic Chlorella , was the dominant ciliate in the lake.
4.  Ophrydium naumanni and autotrophic picoplankton exhibit a clear coincidence in their vertical distribution ( P  < 0.05), preferring levels at or near the 1% of surface photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) irradiance. Both may have the same light requirements, or the coincidence may reflect a trophic relationship.
5. Dependence on light and prey by O. naumanni were studied using field experiments, in which we analysed ciliate grazing on bacteria, and in laboratory experiments, in which we compared particle uptake under dark and light conditions.
6.  Ophrydium naumanni was able to ingest particles [latex microspheres and fluorescently labelled bacteria (FLB)] in field and laboratory experiment, indicating that it has the potential to affect bacteria population of Lake Moreno Oeste.
7. Ciliate particle ingestion was observed to be dependent on light availability because under dark conditions, the ingestion was lowered ( P  < 0.05).  相似文献

Bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) causes lymphosarcoma and persistent lymphocytosis (PL). Some MHC class II gene polymorphisms have been associated with resistance and susceptibility to the development of lymphosarcoma and PL, as well as with a reduced number of circulating BLV-infected lymphocytes. Previously, 230 BLV-infected Holstein cattle were classified into two infection profiles characterized by low and high proviral loads (LPL and HPL respectively). Here, the influence of the polymorphism at the BoLA-DRB3.2* gene of these animals was examined. After genotyping, the association between the BoLA-DRB3.2* alleles and the BLV infection profile was determined as the odds ratio (OR). Two subtypes of allele *11 were identified (ISAG *0901 and *0902 ). Allele ISAG *0902 showed a stronger association with the LPL profile (OR = 8.24; P  <   0.0001) than allele *11 itself (OR = 5.82; P  <   0.0001). Allele ISAG *1701 ( *12 ) also showed significant association with the LPL profile (OR = 3.46; P  <   0.0055). Only one allele, ISAG *1501 or 03 ( *16 ), showed significant association with HPL (OR = 0.36; P  <   0.0005). The DRB3.2* alleles were assigned to three categories: resistant ( R ), susceptible ( S ) and neutral ( N ). Based on their DRB3 genotypes, cattle were classified as homozygous or heterozygous. The RR and RN genotypes were associated with the LPL profile, while the SS and NS genotypes were associated with the HPL profile. The RS genotype could not be associated with any particular profile. Our results show that allele ISAG *0902 appears to be the best BLV resistance marker in Holstein cattle.  相似文献

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the etiological agent of a group of associated diseases (PCVAD) that affect production efficiency and can lead to mortality. Using different crossbred lines of pigs, we analyzed host genetic variation of viral load, immune response and weight change following experimental infection with a PCV2b strain (= 386). Pigs expressed variation in the magnitude and initiation of viremia and immune response recorded weekly until 28 days post‐infection. A higher viral load was correlated with weight gain (r = ?0.26, < 0.0001) and presence of PCV2‐specific antibodies (IgM, r = 0.26–0.34, < 0.0001; IgG, r = 0.17–0.20, < 0.01). In genome‐wide association analyses of the responses at different time points, the proportions of phenotypic variation explained by combined effects of 56 433 SNPs were 34.8–59.4% for viremia, 10.1–59.5% for antibody response and 5.6–14.9% for weight change. Relationships between genomic prediction of overall viral load and weight gain during the first weeks of challenge were negative (?0.21 and ?0.24 respectively, < 0.0001). Individuals that carried more favorable alleles across three SNPs on SSC9 (0.60 Mb) and SSC12 (6.8 and 18.2 Mb) partially explained this relationship, having lower viral load (< 0.0001); lower viremia at day 14 (< 0.0001), day 21 (< 0.01) and day 28 (< 0.05) and greater overall average daily gain during infection (ADGi; < 0.01), ADGi at week 3 (< 0.001) and week 4 (< 0.01). These additive genetic relationships could lead to molecular solutions to improve animal health and reduce production costs.  相似文献

The study evaluated the effect of different sublethal concentrations of copper in water (0, 0.15, 0.3 and 0.5 p.p.m.) on the behavioural response, growth performance, and whole body and liver composition of Oreochromis niloticus. Hyperactivity and reduced exploratory behaviour were observed when fishes were subjected to different levels of copper in water as compared with the control. Fish refused to accept the feed immediately after exposure and only began taking it up after about 4–5 h as compared with the control. Weight gain, specific growth rate and condition factor (k) decreased significantly (P < 0.05) as compared with the control; this decrease was linearly correlated with the increase of copper concentration in water. Exposure of the fish to different copper concentrations in water significantly (P < 0.05) reduced their feed consumption as compared with the control. Values for the feed conversion ratio increased (P < 0.05) whereas the protein efficiency ratio and net protein retention values decreased (P < 0.05) with the copper level increase in water. The hepatosomatic index increased with the copper concentration increase in water. Body moisture and ash contents were the highest (P < 0.05) whereas the fat and gross energy contents were the lowest (P < 0.05) in fish reared in water containing 0.5 p.p.m. of copper as compared with others. No significant (P < 0.05) differences were observed in the whole body crude protein content of fish exposed to different concentrations of copper as compared with the control. Liver moisture and ash contents increased (P < 0.05) whereas the crude protein, fat, nitrogen free extract and gross energy contents decreased (P < 0.05) when the fish were exposed to different concentrations of copper as compared with the control. The liver glycogen level decreased whereas the copper level in the whole body and liver increased significantly (P < 0.05) with the copper concentration increase in water.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Both host plant nutrition and mortality from natural enemies have been predicted to significantly impact host plant selection and oviposition behaviour of phytophagous insects. It is unclear, however, if oviposition decisions maximise fitness.
2. This study examined whether the salt marsh planthopper Pissonotus quadripustulatus prefers higher quality host plants for oviposition, and if oviposition decisions are made so as to minimise mortality at the egg stage.
3. A controlled laboratory experiment and 4 years of field data were used to assess the rates of planthopper oviposition on higher quality 'green' and lower quality 'woody' stems of the host plant Borrichia frutescens . The numbers and percentages of healthy eggs and eggs that were killed by parasitoids or the host plant were recorded.
4. In all years, including the laboratory experiment, Pissonotus planthoppers laid more eggs on lower quality woody stems than on higher quality green stems. While host plant related egg mortality was higher in woody stems, the percentage of eggs parasitised was much greater in green stems. This resulted in a lower total mortality of eggs on woody stems.
5. The results of this study demonstrate that, although Pissonotus prefers lower quality host plants for oviposition, this actually increases fitness. These data seem to support the enemy free space hypothesis, and suggest that for phytophagous insects that experience the majority of mortality in the egg stage, oviposition choices may be made such that mortality is minimised.  相似文献
