The Japanese wood mouse Apodemus speciosus eats large, hard-walled walnuts of Juglans ailanthifolia immediately after finding or after hoarding them. However, not all individuals can efficiently eat the nuts. In this study, to examine local variation in the ability to eat walnuts, feeding behavior was compared among nine wood mouse populations, four from mainland Honshu, where the walnut tree is distributed, and five from the Izu Islands (30-100 km south of Honshu), which lack the tree species. To avoid the effects of pre-capture experience with walnuts, mice from areas lacking the walnut trees were used for testing, even in the Honshu sites. Most mice from Honshu were able to eat walnuts after a 14-day training period, whereas most insular mice could not, with the exception of mice on Kouzushima Island. An analysis of the population genetic structures of these mice based on sequences of the mitochondrial control (D-loop) region revealed that the four insular populations are genetically distinct from the mainland populations, whereas the Kouzushima population remains genetically similar to the mainland populations. The relatively recent colonization of Kouzushima may explain why mice from this island were able to feed on walnuts despite the lack of walnut trees on the island. Thus, walnut-feeding ability appears to have some innate basis in the Japanese wood mouse, and this trait would be selected for in a walnut-available environment as it would better enable mice to survive during food shortages.  相似文献

We examined the gene sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) in two Japanese wood mouse species, Apodemus speciosus (n = 89) and A. argenteus (n = 46), which are distributed on the four main islands of Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu) and on the small islands surrounding them. Apodemus speciosus, the larger of the two species, showed substantial genetic variation, with a maximum of 3% sequence divergence, and remarkable phylogenetic subdivision with two major clades. One clade represents haplotypes from a central region, including Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and their adjacent islands; the other clade includes haplotypes from Hokkaido and the peripheral islands, forming four subclades: a) Hokkaido, b) Sado Island, c) Satsunan Islands, and d) the Izu Islands. Sequence divergence among the four subclades was 1.0 to 1.5%, implying that A. speciosus colonized these geographic regions 0.2 to 0.3 million years ago, assuming a substitution rate of 2.4% per million years. The population on the Izu Islands has preserved haplotypes that are distinct from those in any other region, providing good evidence for the natural colonization of the volcanic islands of the Izu Islands. The cyt b sequence variation had no relation to the karyotypic dimorphism for the eastern (2n = 48) and western (2n = 46) geographic groups, between which a strict border exists at central Honshu. On the other hand, Apodemus argenteus, the smaller of the two species, showed a similar level of sequence divergence (maximum of 3%) but no substantial geographic differentiation: populations in Hokkaido, Sado, and Yakushima shared similar haplotypes with each of the central populations, suggesting that genetic exchanges occurred among the localities in the last 0.15 million years. The apparent genetic structure of the mitochondrial DNA found in the A. speciosus population might be caused solely by long-term existence in insular regions, presumably due to ecological superiority relative to A. argenteus.  相似文献

The role of social behavior on the population regulation of the Japanese wood mouse, Apodemus speciosus, was studied in the Ashu Experimental Forest of Kyoto University by monthly trapping and direct observation on the social behavior at the artificial feeding site. The census was carried out from May to October in 1974 and 1975, and the direct observation in June, August and October, 1975. In the study area, the Japanese wood mouse has two breeding seasons in a year: in spring and in autumn. Minimum survival rate was high in the non-breeding season and low in the breeding season. It was negatively correlated to the number of sexually active adults in both sexes. Home ranges of females tended to be mutually exclusive, and female residents prevented the settlement of female immigrants. On the other hand, home ranges of males overlapped largely and males had a straight social hierarchy. Subordinate males tended to disappear more often than dominant males did, but male residents did not hinder the settlement of male immigrants. Males may regulate their number by driving out the subordinate males, while females by spacing behavior.  相似文献

Space-related relationships between individuals were investigated during the breeding season in a natural population of Apodemus argenteus (Temminck) by using the catch-mark-release method and microsatellite DNA markers. Several overlapping patterns of home ranges in breeding males and females were observed. Although this species is thought to be monogamous, DNA analysis revealed polygynous mating. In adults, relatedness between sexes was generally low and no apparent spatial genetic structure was observed. In juveniles, however, relatedness and geographical distance be-tween individuals were significantly negatively correlated. The relatedness between adult females decreased with distance, whereas there was not such a correlation in males. Long-distance movements were observed in current-year-born males. The differences in spatial genetic structure between adults and juveniles are thought to be produced by male-biased natal dispersal. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Variation in heterochromatin content, as revealed by G- and C-banding, was studied in the sex chromosomes of the wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus. The sex-chromosome heterochromatin was also characterized by DAPI staining. Variation in sex chromatin was recorded in extremely large (giant) sex chromosomes in certain individuals and populations. In some individuals, the Y chromosome was the largest element of the complement. Different variants of both the X and Y chromosomes were found within a single population. The variation is therefore a type of population polymorphism and should not be used for taxonomic discrimination.  相似文献

The ovary of the wood mouse contains an unusually large amount of interstitial tissue which appears to develop from undifferentiated cells of the ovarian stroma and also by transformation of theca or granulosa cells of atretic follicles. The cells are characterized by the presence of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, rounded mitochondria with tubular cristae, and abundant, large (1.5 micron diameter) lipid droplets containing cholesterol and its esters. 3 beta-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity occurs in the interstitial cells. Their ultrastructural characteristics suggest that the cells are not very active, but their abundance and the considerable amount of steroid hormone precursor they contain may compensate for low secretory activity and they may be an important and (from a developmental viewpoint) early source of steroid hormone.  相似文献

An analysis by restriction endonuclease digestion of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) was carried out in natural populations of Apodemus speciosus, a field mouse that is endemic to Japan. Two restriction sites, the EcoRI (E3) and DraI (D4) sites, in the nontranscribed spacer region downstream from the gene for 28S RNA showed polymorphism within and between individuals in the populations from the Japanese main islands. By contrast, populations from the small adjoining islands which are thought to have separated from the main islands 1–2 × 104 years ago showed relatively low levels of polymorphism within and between individuals, i.e., one of the polymorphic bands in the case of each enzyme was predominant in these populations, irrespective of the variants. These results indicate that the rate of fixation of site variations depends on population size and that the direction of fixation is random. Furthermore, each polymorphic restriction site seems to be fixed independently.Correspondence to: H. Suzuki  相似文献

Previously, many studies have revealed the presence of B chromosomes in wild mouse taxa of the genus Apodemus (Rodentia, Muridae). In one of the Apodemus species, A. argenteus, which is endemic to Japan, it is known that B chromosomes were confirmed only in individuals (2n = 46 + B chromosome) from Hokkaido, Japan. There is no report of the presence of B chromosomes from other localities in the Japanese Islands. In this study, we analyzed the chromosomal constitutions of 43 individuals of A. argenteus from three localities in Honshu, Japan. A total of three individuals from central Honshu showed 2n = 47, and each individual carried a dot-like B chromosome. In addition, these B chromosome features were analyzed by differential staining methods, and the C- and QM-banding patterns of the B chromosomes were identical to those of the X chromosomal heterochromatic region showing the delayed-fluorescent response. Thus, it is considered that these B chromosomes would be derived from the heterochromatin of the X chromosomes, as reported in previously published papers.  相似文献

The size and spatial distribution of home ranges in two sympatric field mouse species,Apodemus speciosus andApodemus argenteus, were revealed by the capture-recapture method in a temperate deciduous forest from June 1987 to June 1990. InA. speciosus, the home ranges of males were significantly larger tha those of females, and overlapped with those of other males and females during the breeding season. InA. argenteus, the home range of each male overlapped only that of a single female throughout the year. These results suggested thatA. speciosus was promiscuous or polygynous andA. argenteus was monogamous.  相似文献

Two species of field mice, Apodemus argenteus and A. speciosus, occur in sympatry across the Japanese archipelago. The inter- and intraspecific patterns of morphological differentiation have been evaluated, using a Fourier analysis of the mandible outline. The relative importance of the effect of insular isolation and latitudinal climatic gradient on the size and shape of the two species was assessed by a comparison of the populations from the large island of Honshu and the surrounding small-island populations. The size variation in A. argenteus is correlated with the climatic gradient whilst the shape variation corresponds mainly to a random differentiation of the small-island populations from a Honshu-like basic morphological pattern. A. speciosus displays increased size on small islands, and its shape variation is related to both the climatic gradient and insularity. Finally, the two species are differentiated by both the size and shape of the mandible across the Japanese archipelago, suggesting that interspecific competition between both species is reduced via niche partitioning. Our results emphasize the importance of insular isolation on shape differentiation, but a part of the morphological differentiation is also related to the latitudinal climatic gradient. Isolation on small islands could have favoured such a response to environmental factors by lowering the gene flow that prevents almost any significant differentiation within Honshu populations.  相似文献

Winter breeding, as judged from heavy reproductive organs in both males and females, was observed in bank voles, yellow-necked mice and wood mice in south Sweden during the winter of 1976–1977. The breeding was probably a result of unusually favourable feeding conditions created by an extremely rich beech mast crop.  相似文献

Female wood mice, Apodemus sylvaticus, were killed on day 18 of pregnancy (P 18) and on days 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 of lactation (L 0, L 3, L 6, L 9, L 12, L 15, and L 18 respectively), and the ovaries were studied. The weight of the ovaries was recorded at dissection. The corpora lutea and the follicles of the right ovary were counted and measured, and the appearance of the interstitial tissue was noted. A decline in weight from day P 18 to day L 6 coincided with a decrease in mean diameter of the corpora lutea. The mean number of corpora lutea did, however, not change over the period. The corpora lutea present throughout lactation were probably from the gestation period; the females did not appear to ovulate post-partum. The interstitial tissue was not affected, as far as could be judged with light microscopy. Ovulatory follicles were only present at times close to expected ovulation; on days P 18 and L 18. A lactational anoestrous is suggested for the wood mouse.  相似文献

Five-year-studies of two wood mouse populations (Apodemus sylvaticus L.) were carried out outside the village Vík. S. Iceland, and in a birch forest close to the lake Mývatn, N. Iceland. The population at Vík was studied on a 1.10 ha grid on a slope covered with Angelica archangelica L., the seeds of which constituted a major food resource for the mice. Altogether 948 individuals were caught, marked and followed during 1973–1978. No other free-living small mammals occur in Iceland, and predator pressure is low and considered non-existent on the Angelica slope. The population density was extremely high; highest autumn density recorded was 150 ind ha?1. Like other Apodemus populations, the one at Vík showed a typical seasonal pattern in numbers: a winter decrease, relatively stable numbers in late summer, and an autumn peak. Breeding started in late April or early May and ended in late September; no winter breeding was observed. Three or four litters were produced, and the last litter(s) of the season greatly contributed to the autumn increase. The output of young per reproductive female throughout the year was negatively correlated with spring density, and autumn peak density with the number of females in August. Also overwinter success and weight changes appeared to be associated with population density (and weather). Survival rates did not vary much between years and seasons and were consistently rather high. Autumn survival of juveniles was positively correlated with mean minimum temperatures. Juvenile survival was, at least at times, negatively affected by the presence of adult males. Trapping outside the main grid did not indicate any marked dispersal, though some immigration to the grid must have occurred, especially in spring and early summer. Among the factors governing the population density and dynamics of wood mouse at Vík we emphasize the absence of interspecific competition and predation, the rich and dependable food resources (mainly Angelica seeds), the mild (though moist and windy) climate, the shelter of dense Angelica stands, the abundance of crevices (e.g. nest-sites), and the social interactions. The birch forest in northern Iceland was low productive and the wood mouse population differed from the Vík population by exhibiting low density, short breeding season, and high vagility; characteristics we consider to be representative for most Apodemus populations in Iceland.  相似文献

The helminth community of the wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus, in the Sierra Espuna was characterized after a complete analysis of its helminth community component and infracommunity structure relative to host age, sex and year of capture. The helminth community comprised 13 species: one trematode, four cestodes and eight nematodes. The cestode Pseudocatenotaenia matovi and the nematode Syphacia frederici were the most prevalent and abundant helminth species, respectively. Sixty four percent of mice analysed presented helminths with a direct cycle and 42% presented helminths with an indirect cycle. The helminth community presents a low diversity with infracommunities usually made up of only one or two helminth species. Host age and year of capture seem to play a major role in determining species richness and helminth diversity, but not in determining the abundance of helminths. Host sex does not seem to affect the infection rate nor the diversity. Further studies on more samples of wood mice and other small mammal species in this regional park are needed to explore any possible interactions between helminth communities in the host populations.  相似文献

We sequenced the cytochrome b gene from two little-studied mammal species from the highlands of Southwest China, the long-tailed mole Scaptonyx fusicaudus and the gracile shrew-like mole Uropsilus gracilis. This data was used to examine the phylogenetic relationships among 19 talpid species within the family Talpidae (Mammalia: Eulipotyphla). Cytochrome b gene trees supported a basal placement of shrew-like moles (Uropsilus) within the Talpidae, and suggested that fossorial specializations arose twice during talpid evolution. To assess the evolutionary relationships of moles endemic to this region, we additionally sequenced the 12S rRNA gene and the nuclear recombination-activating gene-1 from eight and ten East Asian taxa, respectively. Analyses of these single and concatenated data sets suggested that East Asian shrew moles diverged prior to the evolution of fossorial Eurasian moles. However, we were unable to determine whether semi-fossorial shrew moles are monophyletic. In contrast, fossorial Eurasian genera (Talpa, Mogera and Euroscaptor) were consistently found to form a monophyletic clade, with Mogera and Euroscaptor representing sister taxa. Furthermore, this fossorial clade grouped with the semi-aquatic Desmana, although with fairly low (35-62%) bootstrap support. Mogera imaizumii was found to be more closely related to M. wogura than to M. tokudae. This implies that the ancestors of these three species entered Japan from the Asian continent in this order via a series of migration events, suggesting that the Japanese Islands have played an important role in preserving mole lineages from ancient to recent times.  相似文献

We addressed phylogenetic relationships among species of Planipapillus, a clade of oviparous onychophorans from southeastern mainland Australia, to create a framework for understanding the evolution of the modified male head papillae used in mating in this clade. We sequenced fragments of two mitochondrial genes, COI and 12S rRNA, and a nuclear intron from the fushi tarazu gene, for individuals from 14 putative species of Planipapillus and six outgroups. We analyzed these data under both parsimony and likelihood criteria, incorporating heterogeneous parameter fitting guided by likelihood ratio tests. These analyses result in strong, congruent support for many clades. We infer multiple independent origins of spikes in Planipapillus male head structures.  相似文献

Wood mice Apodemus sylvaticus were trapped each September over a 13-year period, from 1993 to 2005, in a wooded area adjacent to Malham Tarn, Yorkshire, UK. Plagiorchis muris was found to be the dominant intestinal trematode and occurred in every year of sampling, with an overall prevalence of 16.9%. This appears to be the first record of P. muris in A. sylvaticus within the UK. The mean worm burden was 2.03 and the distribution of the parasite within mice was typically overdispersed. No difference in prevalence relative to host sex was evident although there was a higher prevalence of 21.9% in larger older mice compared with 9.1% in juveniles, which probably relates to a greater foraging activity in older mice. Annual prevalence values of P. muris infections varied significantly over the study period with higher prevalences being associated with years with a high spring/summer rainfall. The second intermediate hosts for P. muris include a variety of aquatic insect larvae and it is likely that the higher rainfall may result in the occurrence of temporary water bodies suitable for the development of insect larvae.  相似文献
