Approximately 15% of a population of the cryopelagic nototheniid fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki , found constantly swimming immediately beneath the annual fast ice, in McMudro Sound, Ross Sea, Antarctica, was affected by X-cell gill disease. This disease affected blood flow through the gill lamellae, and this in turn affected oxygen uptake. Exercise caused increases in heart rate and ventral aortic blood pressure. Heart rate increased from 15·1 ± 1·55 to 23·1 ± 0·93 beats min−1 in healthy fish, with a similar increase (to 24·6 ± 0·26 beats min−1) in X-cell-affected animals. In healthy fish, pressures rose with exercise (from 2·72 ± 0·11 to 3·75 ± 0·19 kPa) and then rapidly returned to resting levels during recovery. In X-cell fish pressures rose during exercise, but then continued to rise, to reach a high of 4·18 ± 0·13 kPa, close to the predicted maximum pressure able to be generated by these hearts. Recovery was rapid in healthy fish, but was prolonged in diseased animals. As they are constantly swimming, there is the potential that X-cell-affected fish suffer from chronic hypertension.  相似文献

A number of Antarctic fish species are affected by an unusual gill condition known as X-cell disease, named in reference to morphologically similar lesions of unknown aetiology reported from northern hemisphere fishes. Despite the disease being first recorded in Antarctic fishes over 25 years ago, no progress has been made in identifying its cause or in confirming any possible relationship with northern fishes. Although once thought to be a neoplasm, observations of lesions in non-Antarctic fishes point towards a parasitic origin. The life cycle of the proposed causal organism is unknown, however, and the only stages identified are those of the eponymous cells in the lesions. Here, we show X-cells in diseased gills of the Antarctic nototheniid Trematomus bernacchii represent multinucleate cysts of an unknown parasitic organism. Furthermore, we use molecular genetic methodology to show that the organism responsible is closely related to that identified in X-cell lesions of the common European dab, Limanda limanda and that the disease thus has a global distribution. Phylogenetic tree construction based on 18S rDNA sequences confirms that X-cell organisms form a group of closely related parasites, but robust positioning of the X-cell clade in the tree awaits more extensive genetic sequencing.  相似文献

X-cell tumours have been described previously from teleost fish of the Northern Hemisphere, in which they occurred as lesions of the skin, pseudobranchs or gills. The present study describes X-cell tumours from the gills of an Antarctic teleost, Pagothenia borchgrevinki , thus extending the range to the Antarctic and also the Southern Hemisphere. Gills of affected fish were distinctly swollen and white in appearance, indicating that the gills were not functional as gas exchange organs. The affected gill tissue contained large numbers of X-cells, large spherical cells with a distinct extracellular coat and many densely staining membrane-bound granules. The possible origin of the cells is discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis Contraction time of an isolated white muscle from the temperate water Girella tricuspidata is proportional to temperature and inversely proportional to fish size. Between ambient (14°C) and 8° C muscle from all sizes of fish is similary affected by temperature; the lower the temperature the more the contraction time is slowed. Below 8° C muscle from large fish is affected more than is muscle from small fish. Contraction time of white muscle in the antarctic notothenioid Pagothenia borchgrevinki is about twice as fast as that of Girella tricuspidata at temperatures between 2–12°C, but at normal body temperature, contraction time of muscle from Girella tricuspidata (14°C) is about twice as fast as that of Pagothenia borchgrevinki (–1.9°C).  相似文献

 Burst swimming increased haematocrit (partly from erythrocyte swelling) in the cryopelagic nototheniid Pagothenia borchgrevinki, but not in the benthic species Trematomus bernacchii. Erythrocyte nucleotides, which regulate haemoglobin-oxygen affinity, remained constant. Plasma cortisol was high in all captive fish and raised questions about the effects of chronic stress on metabolic measurements from Antarctic fish held in captivity. Glycogen was reduced in white trunk muscle, but not in the red pectoral muscle of exercised P. borchgrevinki. Red pectoral muscle glycogen was nearly 3 times higher in T. bernacchii than in P. borchgrevinki but post-exercise lactate rises were modest. Lactate values were, however, higher in exercised P. borchgrevinki white muscle than in T. bernacchii, and correlated with muscle-buffering capacity. Resting adenylate energy charge (AEC) was unexpectedly low in both species and reduced with exercise only for white muscle in P. borchgrevinki. While it appears that the capacity for burst swimming is limited by endogenous metabolic fuels, confirmation of low resting values of ATP and AEC in Antarctic fishes requires the development of methods that maintain high phosphocreatine levels in the muscle. Synopsis Four species of nototheniid fish were sampled from below the sea ice near Cape Armitage, McMurdo Sound:Pagothenia borchgrevinki from just below the ice 1.5 km offshore,Trematomus bernacchii, Trematomus hansoni andTrematomus centronotus from off the bottom in about 20 m of water near the shore. Scale worms and isopods were conspicuous non-planktonic prey, and present in the three benthic fish species. The planktonic pteropod molluscLimacina helicina was numerically common in all four species of fish. The planktonic hyperiid amphipodHyperiella dilatata was also found in all fish species. WhereasP. borchgrevinki is planktivorous in accord with its pelagic habit, theTrematomus spp. clearly also feed on plankton from the water column.T. hansoni is particularly planktivorous, taking smaller copepods thanP. borchgrevinki.  相似文献

Summary Induction of anaesthesia and distribution of the routinely used fish anaesthetic, MS-222 (ethyl m-amino-benzoate methanesulfonate), were monitored in the Antarctic fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki. As expected from the extreme low metabolic rate of Antarctic fish, induction times were significantly longer than those from rainbow trout. Onset of anaesthesia in the Antarctic fish also failed to correlate with either brain or blood MS-222 concentrations, in contrast to the trends observed in freshwater salmonids. High levels of free MS-222 in liver and in the aglomerular kidney, and the presence of acetylated derivatives in the blood, suggest these organs as primary sites of drug metabolism. MS-222 anaesthesia in P. borchgrevinki is also accompanied by dose-dependent changes in haematological parameters.  相似文献

Summary Specimens of the Antarctic fish P. borchgrevinki were collected from just beneath the sea-ice in McMurdo Sound over the period 8 November to 6 December, 1985. The stomach contents of 200 fish were analysed and compared with the co-occurrence of the prey species in the plankton. Numerically, the dominant prey was a thecosomatid pteropod Limacina helicina (83%), followed by a hyperiid amphipod Hyperiella dilatata (5%). Other prey species in decreasing order of occurrence were Euphausia crystallorophias, Euchaeta antarctica, other copepods, a decapod crustacean larva, chaetognaths, the amphipods Orchomene plebs and Epimiriella macronyx, and unidentified juvenile fish. The order of frequency of occurrence of these prey in the guts of all the fish was H. dilatata (in 73% of the fish), L. helicina (71%), calanoid copepods (55%), chaetognaths (51%), E. crystallorophias (42%), decapod crustacean larva (32%), O. plebs (27%), juvenile fish (20%), and E. macronyx (14%). In volumetric terms, the dominant diet contributors were O. plebs (38%), L. helicina (17%) and chaetognaths (15%). All prey except O. plebs and E. macronyx were taken in concurrent plankton samples. Although planktivory of Pagothenia borchgrevinki is confirmed, it is not certain whether feeding is confined to the immediate sub-ice environment.  相似文献

The diet of non-breeding male Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) was investigated at Harmony Point, Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, by the analysis of 18 and 33 scats collected during February 1996 and 1997 respectively. Overall, fish were the most frequent prey (74.5%) and predominated by mass (54.4%), whereas krill predominated by number (94.2%). This coincides well with the pattern observed in 1997, but in 1996 krill was the most important prey by number and mass (50.2%). The importance of the remaining taxa represented in the samples (octopods, hyperiids and bivalves) was negligible. Among fish, myctophids represented 85.2% of the fish mass, with Gymnoscopelus nicholsi and Electrona antarctica being the main prey. These two species predominated in 1997, whereas the channichthyid Cryodraco antarcticus and the nototheniid Gobionotothen gibberifrons were dominant in 1996. Amoebic gill diseases (AGD) caused primarily by the amphizoic Neoparamoeba spp. have been identified as significant to fish health in intensive aquaculture. These diseases have consequently received significant attention with regard to disease pathophysiology. Neoparamoeba perurans has been putatively identified as the aetiological agent in salmonids, with other species such as turbot Psetta maxima and sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax also affected. Similarly, Neoparamoeba spp. have also been identified in co‐infections with other gill diseases in salmonids. While infection of the gills results in an acute multifocal hyperplastic host response, reduced gill surface area and increased mucous cell densities, ion regulation and respiration in terms of blood gasses are only marginally affected. This may be partially attributed to reserve respiratory capacity and a reduction in mucous viscosity allowing for a greater flushing of the gill, so reducing the gill mucus boundary layer. Clinical and acute infections result in significant cardiovascular compromise with increases in aortic blood pressure, and systemic vascular resistance in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, which are not seen in rainbow Oncorhynchus mykiss and brown trout Salmo trutta. Increases in vascular resistance appear to be due to vascular constriction potentially reducing blood flow to the heart in compromised fishes, the overall effect being to lead to a compensatory tissue remodelling and change in cardiac shape in chronically infected fishes. The combined effect of reduced gill surface area and cardiovascular compromise leads to a significant reduction in swimming performance and increases in the routine metabolic rate that lead to an increase in the overall metabolic cost of disease.  相似文献

Survival of some polar fishes is associated with high levels of circulating antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs). AFGP prevent ice growth giving rise to thermal hysteresis. The inhibiting action of AFGPs implies that polar fish contain ice to which AFGPs adsorb. Cryopelagic Pagothenia borchgrevinki, inhabiting the ice-laden waters of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, were assayed for ice and ice was found on skin, gills, in the intestine, and in the spleen. Two methods used to assess the number of ice crystals in spleens gave comparable results (12.1 +/− 1.9 and 22 +/− 3.8 per spleen). Attempts were made to measure the rate of uptake of ice by P. borchgrevinki held in cages immediately beneath the sub-ice platelet layer in McMurdo Sound; uptake was sporadic. Introduction of ice into fish by spray freezing a small patch of the integument resulted in detection of splenic ice after 1 h, illustrating that a mechanism exists for ice transport from the periphery to the spleen. Splenic ice did not seem to be eliminated from fish held in ice-free water at − 1.6 °C for approximately two months. The relatively small number of splenic ice crystals and the slow rate of ice uptake suggest efficient ice barriers exist in P. borchgrevinki.  相似文献

Summary Specimens of the Antarctic fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki were collected from just below the sea-ice in McMurdo Sound over the period 5–16 November 1987. The stomach contents of 54 freshly captured fish were analysed and showed very strong similarities with an earlier, more extensive, dietary analysis conducted at the same location (Foster et al. 1987). There was as much variation in stomach contents from fish within a school, as there was between schools, contrary to the expectation that fish within a school would have shared a more common feeding history. Fish were maintained in holding tanks for up to 48 h after capture; groups were sacrificed at 6 h intervals and the stomach contents analysed to determine evacuation rates. Evacuation rates of total stomach contents and individual prey species were fitted with an exponential model of decay. The exponential time constant for decay of stomach contents was 32 h (Table 2), while time constants for individual prey species ranged from 12 h for small prey species to 49 h for the larger crustacea. The feeding rate of P. borchgrevinki on important prey species was calculated from the above data (Table 2). Low feeding rates, and the low numbers of P. borchgrevinki argue against removal by predation as being the explanation for the observed reduction in plankton numbers seen in shallow waters (Foster 1989).  相似文献

Levels of ubiquitin (Ub)-conjugated proteins, as an index of misfolded or damaged proteins, were measured in notothenioid fishes, with both Antarctic (Trematomus bernacchii, T. pennellii, Pagothenia borchgrevinki) and non-Antarctic (Notothenia angustata, Bovichtus variegatus) distributions, as well as non-notothenioid fish from the Antarctic (Lycodichthys dearborni, Family Zoarcidae) and New Zealand (Bellapiscis medius, Family Tripterygiidae), in an effort to better understand the effect that inhabiting a sub-zero environment has on maintaining the integrity of the cellular protein pool. Overall, levels of Ub-conjugated proteins in cold-adapted Antarctic fishes were significantly higher than New Zealand fishes in gill, liver, heart and spleen tissues suggesting that life at sub-zero temperatures impacts protein homeostasis. The highest tissue levels of ubiquitinated proteins were found in the spleen of all fish. Ub conjugate levels in the New Zealand N. angustata, more closely resembled levels measured in other Antarctic fishes than levels measured in other New Zealand species, likely reflecting their recent shared ancestry with Antarctic notothenioids.  相似文献

Abyssocottus korotneffi and Cottinella boulengeri are the deepest-living bottom species among freshwater teleosts. Both species have gill arches with nodulous gill-rakers equipped with sharp denticles. The gill-slit behind the fourth arch is reduced considerably and the hemibranch corresponding to this slit is absent, though some miniature structures resembling reduced filaments were occasionally observed there. The respiratory components of the gill apparatus in both species considered are much reduced, especially in A. korotneffi, because of the moderate number of relatively short gill filaments and the small number of respiratory lamella on them. The allometric relationship between the gill respiratory surface area (GRSA) and body mass (Y = aWb) is expressed by Y = 328.55 W0.724 for A. korotneffi (7–22 g) and by Y = 333.15 W0.902 for C. boulengeri (3–24 g). In adult A. korotneffi, the GRSA index calculated per body weight unit is about 35% lower than that in C. boulengeri, but is 70% higher compared with the bathypelagic golomyanka Comephorus dybowskii previously examined. The effect of an acute increase in temperature, exhaustive exercise and hypoxia on the haematology of the benthic Antarctic teleost, Trematomus bernacchii was investigated. High temperature and hypoxia caused the biggest changes to the blood, with increases in haematocrit, haemoglobin concentrations and plasma chloride levels. The spleen decreased in mass. Exercise produced the smallest changes. Changes were substantially less than reported for the more active cryopelagic species Pagothenia borchgrevinki. The magnitude of the haematocrit increase is discussed in relation to life-style of fish living in the Antarctic.  相似文献

Summary Pagothenia borchgrevinki, an Antarctic teleost fish was swum to exhaustion and changes in lactic acid levels and blood haematocrit were monitored during recovery. The fish did not perform well at high swimming speeds due to an inability of the white myotomal muscle to produce ATP by anaerobic glycolysis. Consequently, low levels of lactic acid were produced which were fairly rapidly broken down. Haematocrit values were low in non-exercised fish, and these increased by over 100% during exercise, falling back to control levels over many hours. This is probably related to the increased oxygen demand during exercise.  相似文献

We studied specific features of development of the gill system during ontogenesis of the zebrafish Danio rerio and ninespine stickleback Pungitius pungitius, which differ in the rates of gill system, development. Although the development of sticklebacks proceeds in nature at lower temperatures than for zebrafish, the rate of gill formation in the former is higher. These differences are related to the specific conditions in which these fish develop: embryonic and larval development of the stickleback proceeds in bodies of water with a lower oxygen content than for zebrafish, and this results in the adaptive alteration of the rate of gill system development. Differentiation of gills in the zebrafish is accompanied by a manifold increase in the oxygen consumption rate. At different developmental stages, the incremental rates of oxygen consumption and increase in the body mass of the zebrafish larvae and fry differed significantly.  相似文献

Greater success in catching fish with gill nets is possible if more the fish are attracted to the nets. Bait has been successfully used to lure fish into the gill nets. With the aim of increasing the catch efficiency of monofilament gill nets, a study was conducted between January 2009 and December 2010 to test the effect of artificial baits on the efficiency of 40, 50 and 55 mm monofilament gill nets in the Keban Dam Lake (Elaz??/Turkey). The catch rate of the baited nets was compared to similar nets without bait. Baited nets caught 482 fish (71.8% of the total, seven species). Non‐baited nets caught 189 fish (28% of the total, seven species). The majority of fish (238) were caught using baited gill nets with 40 mm mesh. The most commonly caught species was Capoeta trutta. The differences between the baited gill nets and non‐baited gill nets were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Finally, it was understood that artificially baited monofilament gill nets had higher catch efficiencies than non‐baited monofilament gill nets. Unlike most natural baits, artificial baits are re‐usable and thus more economical in the long term.  相似文献

Summary Red and white muscle in the two Antarctic notothenioid fishes Dissostichus mawsoni and Pagothenia borchgrevinki show a rate of postmortem fall of 0.2 pH units per hour, which is close to the rate reported for mammalian muscle at 30°C, but the plateau value is reached several hours earlier in the Antarctic fish, indicating significantly lower stores of initial glycogen. A few particles, most likely representing glycogen, were seen in P. borchgrevinki white muscle and D. mawsoni red muscle, whereas predictably fewer glycogen still was evident in D. mawsoni white muscle. When large numbers of mitochondria and lipid stores were encountered in combination with a small amount of glycogen, we concluded that aerobic metabolism is dominant and that the two species examined would not use white trunk muscle for sustained or slow swimming. Rapid contractions of white trunk muscle as in prey capture or predator evasion are more likely.  相似文献
