Postcranial ossification sequences in 24 therian mammals and three outgroup taxa were obtained using clear staining and computed tomography to test the hypothesis that the marsupial forelimb is developmentally accelerated, and to assess patterns of therian postcranial ossification. Sequence rank variation of individual bones, phylogenetic analysis, and algorithm-based heterochrony optimization using event pairs were employed. Phylogenetic analysis only recovers Marsupialia, Australidelphia, and Eulipotyphla. Little heterochrony is found within marsupials and placentals. However, heterochrony was observed between marsupials and placentals, relating to late ossification in hind limb long bones and early ossification of the anterior axial skeleton. Also, ossification rank position of marsupial forelimb and shoulder girdle elements is more conservative than that of placentals; in placentals the hind limb area is more conservative. The differing ossification patterns in marsupials can be explained with a combination of muscular strain and energy allocation constraints, both resulting from the requirement of active movement of the altricial marsupial neonates toward the teat. Peramelemorphs, which are comparatively passive at birth and include species with relatively derived forelimbs, differ little from other marsupials in ossification sequence. This suggests that ossification heterochrony in marsupials is not directly related to diversity constraints on the marsupial forelimb and shoulder girdle.  相似文献

Marsupial mammals are born in an embryonic state, as compared with their eutherian counterparts, yet certain features are accelerated. The most conspicuous of these features are the precocial forelimbs, which the newborns use to climb unaided from the opening of the birth canal to the teat. The developmental mechanisms that produce this acceleration are unknown. Here we show that heterochronic and heterotopic changes early in limb development contribute to forelimb acceleration. Using Tbx5 and Tbx4 as fore- and hindlimb field markers, respectively, we have found that, compared with mouse, both limb fields arise notably early during opossum development. Patterning of the forelimb buds is also accelerated, as Shh expression appears early relative to the outgrowth of the bud itself. In addition, the forelimb fields and forelimb myocyte allocation are increased in size and number, respectively, and migration of the spinal nerves into the forelimb bud has been modified. This shift in the extent of the forelimb field is accompanied by shifts in Hox gene expression along the anterior-posterior axis. Furthermore, we found that both fore- and hindlimb fields arise gradually during gastrulation and extension of the embryonic axis, in contrast to the appearance of the limb fields in their entirety in all other known cases. Our results show a surprising evolutionary flexibility in the early limb development program of amniotes and rule out the induction of the limb fields by mature structures such as the somites or mesonephros.  相似文献

Most quadrupedal mammals support a larger amount of body weight on their forelimbs compared with their hind limbs during locomotion, whereas most primates support more of their body weight on their hind limbs. Increased hind limb weight support is generally interpreted as an adaptation that reduces stress on primates' highly mobile forelimb joints. Thus, increased hind limb weight support was likely vital for the evolution of primate arboreality. Despite its evolutionary importance, the mechanism used by primates to achieve this important kinetic pattern remains unclear. Here, we examine weight support patterns in a sample of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) to test the hypothesis that limb position, combined with whole body center of mass position (COM), explains increased hind limb weight support in this taxon. Chimpanzees have a COM midway between their shoulders and hips and walk with a relatively protracted hind limb and a relatively vertical forelimb, averaged over a step. Thus, the limb kinematics of chimpanzees brings their feet closer to the COM than their hands, generating greater hind limb weight support. Comparative data suggest that these same factors likely explain weight support patterns for a broader sample of primates. It remains unclear whether primates use these limb kinematics to increase hind limb weight support, or whether they are byproducts of other gait characteristics. The latter hypothesis raises the intriguing possibility that primate weight support patterns actually evolved as byproducts of other traits, or spandrels, rather than as adaptations to increase forelimb mobility. The distribution of peak vertical forces between the forelimbs and the hind limbs is one of the key traits distinguishing primate quadrupedal locomotion from that of other mammals. Whereas most mammals generate greater peak vertical forelimb forces, primates generate greater peak vertical hind limb forces. At the ultimate level, hind limb dominance in limb force distribution is typically interpreted as an adaptation to facilitate fine-branch arboreality. However, the proximate biomechanical bases for primate limb force distribution remain controversial. Three models have been previously proposed. The Center of Mass (COM) Position model attributes primates’ unique mode of limb loading to differences in the position of the whole-body COM relative to the hands and feet. The Active Weight Shift model asserts that primates actively redistribute body weight to their hind limbs by pitching the trunk up via the activation of hind limb retractor muscles. Finally, the Limb Compliance model argues that primates selectively mitigate forelimb forces by maintaining a compliant forelimb and a flat shoulder trajectory. Here, a detailed dataset of ontogenetic changes in morphology and locomotor mechanics in Bolivian squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) was employed as a model system to evaluate each of these proposed models in turn. Over the first 10 months of life, squirrel monkeys transitioned from forelimb dominant infants to hind limb dominant juveniles, a change that was precipitated by decreases in peak vertical forelimb forces and increases in peak vertical hind limb forces. Results provided some support for all three of the models, although the COM Position and Active Weight Shift models were most strongly supported by the data. Overall, this study suggests that primates may use a variety of biomechanical strategies to achieve hind limb dominance in limb force distribution.  相似文献

As serially homologous structures, mammalian fore‐ and hindlimbs ancestrally share a common developmental and genetic architecture. As a result, mammalian fore‐ and hindlimbs are predicted to be highly integrated in the absence of selective pressures to form divergent limb morphologies. Marsupials experience such a divergent selective pressure to form a robust forelimb to power a post‐natal crawl to the teat. In this study, phenotypic covariation in marsupials was assessed to determine if specialization for the crawl did indeed reduce integration between their fore‐ and hindlimbs. To explore the evolution of mammalian limb integration, phenotypic covariation in representative eutherians and monotremes was also examined. Phenotypic covariation in limbs was quantified morphometrically, and analysed with correlational and phylogenetic methods. Results indicate that marsupials generally have relatively high levels of within‐limb phenotypic covariation, and low levels between limbs, in contrast to the pattern reconstructed for the mammalian ancestor. Our findings support the hypothesis that pressure to specialize in one limb (either the fore‐ or the hindlimb) can reduce phenotypic covariation between limbs, and that reduced limb phenotypic covariation is derived in marsupials. Histological analysis of an ontogenetic series of the dasyurid marsupial,Sminthopsis virginiae, from birt to 60 days old, was undertaken to assess the developmental homologies of the deciduous and successional teeth. This period covers the time from the initiation of all teeth as epithelial buds up until the time of early eruption of some teeth. In addition, two older specimens, aged 81 and 97 days, were examined to provide additional information on the state of differentiation of the unerupted third premolar. In the postcanine dentition, only a single tooth position, dP3, was characterized by the later development of a replacing successional tooth (P3), following developmental pathways identical to those in eutherian mammals. In contrast, the anterior dentition is characterized by the formation of rudimentary, nonerupting deciduous incisors and canines, and by the accelerated development of normal, erupting successional incisors and canines in both jaws. Comparison of relative developmental stages for each tooth position throughout its preeruptive ontogeny suggests thatheterochrony (both developmental acceleration and retardation) has played an important role in the evolutionary history of the dasyurid dentition. Differing aspects of this phenomenon are identified and discussed for the anterior dentition, the anterior two premolars, P3, and the lower molars. Further evidence is presented to corroborate the identification of the anterior two premolars in the adult as dP1 and dP2, based on the relative retardation of their initiation and their lack of successor tooth germs. Studies of morphological integration provide valuable information on the correlated evolution of traits and its relationship to long-term patterns of morphological evolution. Thus far, studies of morphological integration in mammals have focused on placentals and have demonstrated that similarity in integration is broadly correlated with phylogenetic distance and dietary similarity. Detailed studies have also demonstrated a significant correlation between developmental relationships among structures and adult morphological integration. However, these studies have not yet been applied to marsupial taxa, which differ greatly from placentals in reproductive strategy and cranial development and could provide the diversity necessary to assess the relationships among phylogeny, ecology, development, and cranial integration. This study presents analyses of morphological integration in 20 species of australodelphian marsupials, and shows that phylogeny is significantly correlated with similarity of morphological integration in most clades. Size-related correlations have a significant affect on results, particularly in Peramelia, which shows a striking decrease in similarity of integration among species when size is removed. Diet is not significantly correlated with similarity of integration in any marsupial clade. These results show that marsupials differ markedly from placental mammals in the relationships of cranial integration, phylogeny, and diet, which may be related to the accelerated development of the masticatory apparatus in marsupials.  相似文献

The scincid lizard clade Lerista provides an exceptional model for studying the mode of substantial evolutionary transformations, comprising more than 90 species displaying a remarkable variety of body forms. Patterns of character evolution in this clade, inferred from reconstructed ancestral states, are at least partly consistent with the correlated progression model of macroevolutionary change. At each stage in the transition to a highly elongate, limb-reduced body plan, alterations to the lengths of the forelimb and hind limb are accompanied by compensatory changes in snout-vent length (or vice versa), preserving locomotory ability. Nonetheless, there is evidence for moderate dissociation of hind limb evolution in some lineages, while tail length has evolved effectively independently of the substantial alterations to the lengths of the body and limbs. This indicates a significant role of evolutionary and developmental modularity in the divergence of body form within Lerista, and emphasises the potential variability of the strength of functional constraints within organisms and among lineages. Trends toward a highly elongate, functionally limbless body plan may be attributed primarily to a combination of the interdependence of changes in snout-vent length and limb lengths and the very low probability of re-elaborating structurally reduced limbs. Similar asymmetries in the probabilities of interrelated phenotypic changes may be a significant cause of evolutionary trends resulting in the emergence of higher taxa. Throughout their evolutionary histories, marsupial mammals have been taxonomically and morphologically less diverse than their sister taxa the placentals. Because of this, it has been proposed that the evolution of marsupials has been constrained by the functional requirements of their mode of reproduction. Marsupials give birth after short gestation times to immature neonates that immediately crawl, under the power of their precociously developed shoulder girdles, to the teat where they attach and complete their early development. Using a novel approach incorporating adult and embryological morphological data, this study is the first to both: (1) statistically support adult patterns of morphological divergence consistent with the constraint hypothesis, and (2) identify ontogenetic patterns of morphological change that demonstrate that the constraint was responsible, at least in part, for their formation. As predicted by the marsupial constraint, the shoulder girdles of adult marsupials are less diverse than those of adult placentals, and adult marsupial scapulae are less morphologically diverse than adult marsupial pelves. Furthermore, marsupials that complete an extensive crawl to the teat are restricted to a common pattern of ontogenetic scapular shape change, strongly supporting the hypothesis that the morphological development of the marsupial scapula has been limited evolutionarily by its obligate role in the crawl to the teat. Because this study establishes that ontogenetic and evolutionary morphological change is correlated within mammalian scapulae, it is probable that the marsupial constraint also restricted the morphological divergence of the scapula over evolutionary time by limiting ontogenetic change in the scapula. These findings, coupled with the importance of the shoulder girdle in mammalian locomotor specialization, support the conclusion that the low morphological diversity of marsupial forms over evolutionary time could be directly due to the constraint on marsupial morphological evolution caused by the functional requirements of the crawl to the teat.  相似文献

The amount of phenotypic variation between conspecifics is largely a result of the opposing forces of constraint and plasticity. Because selection is the product of competition between individuals of the same species, understanding the interactions between these forces is vital to understanding evolution. We investigated levels of intraspecific variation in the catarrhine skeleton using a morphometric analysis of 245 crania and 189 appendicular postcranial skeletons. We identified regions of interest from the literature and made comparisons of intraspecific variation between the appendicular postcranium and cranium, the forelimb and hind limb, the diaphyses and epiphyses of long bones, and the diaphyses of the proximal and distal segments of the limbs. We confirmed that variation is significantly higher in the appendicular postcranium than in the cranium, in the forelimb compared to the hind limb, and in the diaphyses compared to the epiphyses. Further, we found that this pattern was repeated in 12 species spanning the infraorder, suggesting a characteristic of catarrhines in general. The relatively low level of variation in the cranium suggests that constraint is more widespread in this region compared to the appendicular postcranium, which is more plastic, especially in the diaphyses of the forelimb. In contrast to previous studies, we found the diaphyses of the distal segment to be more variable than the diaphyses of the proximal segment. The results from this study, which show regional differences in intraspecific variation, will aid the interpretation of evolutionary and plastic influences on morphological variation and inform decisions about which skeletal regions are suitable for answering specific evolutionary questions.  相似文献

Higher weight support on the hind limb than forelimb is among the distinctive characteristics of primate quadrupeds. Although often assumed to be due to a more posteriorly positioned whole body center of mass, there are little data to support such a difference. Reynolds (1985. Am J Phys Anthropol 67:335-349) notes that the distribution of forces on the limbs can also be influenced by average limb posture, but suggests that this effect is too small to account for the asymmetry in weight support observed in primates. Instead, he proposes that high hind limb forces are brought about by an active process of shifting weight off the forelimbs and onto the hind limbs through use of hind limb retractors. In this study, we use video records of walking animals to explore the degree to which average limb posture in primates and other quadrupedal mammals deviates from vertical, and use electromyography to test Reynolds' model of hind limb retractor activity and posterior weight shift. The limb posture results indicate that primate forelimbs oscillate about a vertical or slightly retracted axis, and though the hind limbs are slightly protracted, the magnitude of deviation from vertical is too small to have a major effect on weight support distribution. The electromyographic results reveal higher levels of hip extensor activity in antipronograde primates that bear a higher proportion of weight on their hind limbs. This lends support to Reynolds' suggestion that some primates use muscles to actively shift weight onto hind limbs to relieve stresses on forelimbs less well structured for weight support.  相似文献

With the exception of the well-documented case for anoline lizards, recent studies have found few evolutionary relationships between morphology and habitat use in lizards despite clear-cut biomechanical predictions. One of the factors typically hampering these analyses is the clustering of habitat use within evolutionary lineages. In the present study, body shape was quantified for male and female lizards of 30 species of phrynosomatid lizards. This group was selected as little clustering of ecological variables seemed to be present. The results of traditional analyses indicate that evolutionary correlates of habitat use were prominent in the hindlimbs of both sexes. Species living in open habitats are characterized by longer femurs, and longer hindlimbs relative to the forelimb. Moreover, males from ground-dwelling species utilizing open habitats have longer toes on the hind foot than males from climbing species. Phylogenetic analyses indicated strong evolutionary associations between habitat use and the relative length of front and hindlimbs, with species from open terrestrial habitats having significantly shorter frontlimbs relative to their hindlimb than rock or tree climbing species. Evolutionary associations between morphology and habitat use were generally stronger for male lizards, indicating a potentially important contribution of sexual selection to the evolution of differences in limb proportions.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77 , 149–163.  相似文献

Flapping flight has evolved independently in three vertebrate clades: pterosaurs, birds and bats. Each clade has a unique flight mechanism involving different elements of the forelimb. Here, patterns of limb integration are examined using partial correlation analysis within species and matrix correlation analysis across species to test whether the evolution of flapping flight has involved developmental dissociation of the serial homologues in the fore- and hind limb in each clade. Our sample included seven species of birds, six species of bats, and three species of pterosaurs for which sufficient sample sizes were available. Our results showed that, in contrast to results previously reported for quadrupedal mammals, none of the three clades demonstrated significant integration between serial homologues in the fore- and hind limb. Unexpectedly, there were few consistent patterns of within-forelimb correlations across each clade, suggesting that wing integration is not strongly constrained by functional relationships. However, there was significant integration within the hind limbs of pterosaurs and birds, but not bats, possibly reflecting the differing functions of hind limbs (e.g. upright support vs. suspension) in these clades.  相似文献

Behavioral studies indicate that adult mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei) are the most terrestrial of all nonhuman hominoids, but that infant mountain gorillas are much more arboreal. Here we examine ontogenetic changes in diaphyseal strength and length of the femur, tibia, humerus, radius, and ulna in 30 Virunga mountain gorillas, including 18 immature specimens and 12 adults. Comparisons are also made with 14 adult western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), which are known to be more arboreal than adult mountain gorillas. Infant mountain gorillas have significantly stronger forelimbs relative to hind limbs than older juveniles and adults, but are nonsignificantly different from western lowland gorilla adults. The change in inter-limb strength proportions is abrupt at about two years of age, corresponding to the documented transition to committed terrestrial quadrupedalism in mountain gorillas. The one exception is the ulna, which shows a gradual increase in strength relative to the radius and other long bones during development, possibly corresponding to the gradual adoption of stereotypical fully pronated knuckle-walking in older juvenile gorillas. Inter-limb bone length proportions show a contrasting developmental pattern, with hind limb/forelimb length declining rapidly from birth to five months of age, and then showing no consistent change through adulthood. The very early change in length proportions, prior to significant independent locomotion, may be related to the need for relatively long forelimbs for climbing in a large-bodied hominoid. Virunga mountain gorilla older juveniles and adults have equal or longer forelimb relative to hind limb bones than western lowland adults. These findings indicate that both ontogenetically and among closely related species of Gorilla, long bone strength proportions better reflect actual locomotor behavior than bone length proportions.  相似文献

The tetrapod forelimb and hindlimb are serially homologous structures that share a broad range of developmental pathways responsible for their patterning and outgrowth. Covariation between limbs, which can introduce constraints on the production of variation, is related to the duplication of these developmental factors. Despite this constraint, there is remarkable diversity in limb morphology, with a variety of functional relationships between and within forelimb and hindlimb elements. Here we assess a hierarchical model of limb covariation structure based on shared developmental factors. We also test whether selection for morphologically divergent forelimbs or hindlimbs is associated with reduced covariation between limbs. Our sample includes primates, murines, a carnivoran, and a chiropteran that exhibit varying degrees of forelimb and hindlimb specialization, limb size divergence, and/or phylogenetic relatedness. We analyze the pattern and significance of between-limb morphological covariation with linear distance data collected using standard morphometric techniques and analyzed by matrix correlations, eigenanalysis, and partial correlations. Results support a common limb covariation structure across these taxa and reduced covariation between limbs in nonquadruped species. This result indicates that diversity in limb morphology has evolved without signficant modifications to a common covariation structure but that the higher degree of functional limb divergence in bats and, to some extent, gibbons is associated with weaker integration between limbs. This result supports the hypothesis that limb divergence, particularly selection for increased functional specialization, involves the reduction of developmental factors common to both limbs, thereby reducing covariation.  相似文献

Digit reduction has occurred in parallel in many mammalian lineages. However, despite this pattern's prevalence, the developmental mechanisms underlying mammalian digit reduction remain controversial. We therefore undertook a study of digit development in the pig (Sus scrofa), a mammal with reduced first, second, and fifth digits. Our results indicate that from its earliest formation, the pig limb bud is significantly narrower than that of the model pentadactyl mammal, mouse. Furthermore, the cartilage condensations of the pig's reduced digits are noticeably smaller than those of their nonreduced counterparts from the time of their formation. In addition, growth rates of pig digits are comparable, as are the patterns of cell death in developing pig and mouse limbs. Taken together, results suggest that pig's first, second, and fifth digits are primarily reduced through evolutionary modifications in the early developmental patterning of their limbs. Results of this study, coupled with those from study of limb development in other mammals, suggest that although major developmental reorganizations (e.g., complete digit or limb loss) during early limb development may be selected against, it may be common for more subtle evolutionary modifications in limb development (e.g., changes in relative digit size) to occur at this time.  相似文献

Aspects of gait mechanics of two lemurid species were explored experimentally. Substrate reaction forces were recorded for three animals each of L. catta and E. fulvus walking and running at voluntary speeds either on a wooden runway with an integrated force platform or on elevated pole supports with a section attached to the force platform. The average height of the back over these substrates and fluctuations in this height were evaluated using video-analysis. Animals preferred walking gaits and lower speeds on the poles, and gallops and higher speeds on the ground. At overlapping speeds, few adjustments to substrate types were identified. Hind limb peak forces are usually lower on the poles than on the ground, and the caudal back is closer to the substrate. This suggests that greater hind limb flexion and reduced limb stiffness occurred on the poles. The support phases for both limbs at higher speeds are slightly elongated on the poles. Forelimb peak forces are not lower, and the trajectory of the caudal back does not follow a smoother path, i.e., not all elements of a compliant gait are present on the simulated arboreal substrates. The horizontal, rigid poles, offered as substitutes for branchlike supports in the natural habitat, may not pose enough of a challenge to require more substantial gait adjustments. Across substrates, forelimb peak forces are generally lower than hind limb peak forces. The interlimb force distribution is similar to that of most other primates with more even limb lengths. Walking gaits present a greater divergence in fore- and hind limb forces than galloping gaits, which are associated with higher forces. The more arboreal E. fulvus has higher forelimb forces than the more terrestrial L. catta, unlike some anthropoid species in which the arborealists have lower forelimb forces than the terrestrialists. As in other primate and nonprimate quadrupeds, the major propulsive thrust comes from the hind limbs in both lemurs. While our data confirm certain aspects of primate gait mechanics (e.g., generally higher hind limb forces), they do not fully support the notion of greater limb compliance. Neither a compliant forelimb on branchlike supports, nor a negative correlation of forelimb force magnitudes with degree of arboreality were observed. Increasing forelimb-to-hind-limb-force-ratios with increasing speed and force magnitudes are also not expected under this paradigm.  相似文献
