The structure situated in the lumen of the buccal tube, called here buccal velum, separates the buccal space from the pharyngeal space. The velum is a supple membrane-pile. Its structure resembles that of a fish-trap. The food, once ingested, cannot go back into the buccal lumen. 相似文献

The cuticular oesophagus is a simple expansion of the dorsal pharyngeal wall of the mastax. The ciliary oesophagus is the cellular anterior wall of the stomach lumen, but seems to have the same embryological origin as the pharynx. In Brachionus calyciflorus, its cilia are surrounded by cuticular velums which have the same myelin-like structure and the same function as the buccal velum of Philodina roseola. In all cases, the oesophagus prevents the return of food particles from the stomach to the mastax lumen. 相似文献

Both swimming and attachment behaviour of immature female Brachionus calyciflorus (Pallas) from a young orthoclone were analyzed under four experimental conditions: with and without algae (Chlorella), and with fed and starved individuals. Eighteen hours before the recording, two random groups were formed. To the first group, Chlorella was added. The second was placed in pure water. Both were filmed in red light to avoid a phototactic effect. Video-recorded swimming behaviour of B. calyciflorus was analyzed by automatic tracking. Each B. calyciflorus was filmed alternately in the presence or absence of Chlorella for five periods of 15 min. Under indentical light and temperature conditions the number of animals attached to the culture dish was measured with both starved and fed females. We observed a significant difference in swimming paths depending on the presence or absence of food, and the physiological state of the individuals. In the presence of Chlorella the linear speed was lower and the angular speed was greater. This increase in angular speed was more pronounced when females were subjected to a period of starvation before the experimentation. The attachment behaviour increased in the algal environment. This modification of swimming behaviour enables females to increase the time spent in a favorable food environment. 相似文献

In this review, original observations on rotifer cilia and muscles are used to explain the mechanism of their movements. The following topics are discussed: (1) cilia and infraciliature of the cingulum, (2) muscle insertions into the infraciliature, (3) innervation of the muscles and non-innervation of the ciliated cells, (4) recent data on the location of gap junctions which link some muscles, (5) cilia and infraciliature of the cirri of the pseudotrochus of Brachionus calyciflorus, and the insertion of muscles onto their infraciliature, (6) the relation between muscles and integument in the foot of Philodina roseola, (7) the relation between muscles and integument in the joint present at the base of the tail of Trichocerca rattus, and (8) hypotheses on the first articulated (muscle-integument) movements which exist alongside ciliary motion in certain rotifers.Neuro-ethological summaries, based on data of the effectors and on observations on behavior and the sensitivity of rotifer sensory receptors (reviewed in Clément et al., 1983), are attempted. A more complete analysis is provided in the following instances: (1) swimming and the mechanism of turning, (2) retraction of the rotatory apparatus, (3) feeding behavior in Trichocerca rattus involving the succession swimming, crawling and nutrient intake.Other behavioral sequences, for which the ethological and ultrastructural data are incomplete, are presented and briefly discussed.Lastly, the argument is put forward that rotifers constitute an exceptional model for comparative, neuroethological studies which may enable us to better understand the mechanisms of evolution. Carrying out detailed observations, aimed at understanding how certain movements occur, should enable us to gain insights into the question of why they exist. 相似文献

The swimming behaviour of orthoclonal Brachionus calyciflorus (Pallas) females was studied with the aid of a system of automated trajectometry. The swimming was observed in response to the food environment and the individual's nutritive state. Eighteen hours before testing, neonates were placed either in a suspension of Chlorella, or in a freshwater medium. For each nutritive state, the test consisted of an analysis of the swimming behaviour of B. calyciflorus in 5 different environmental food conditions: in an algal suspension, in an algal solution (obtained from filtration of the algal suspension), in a freshwater medium, in the same freshwater medium with a suspension of polystyrene beads, and in the algal solution with the same suspension of beads. Three variables were used to describe the swimming path: linear speed (mm s–1), angular speed (degrees s–1), and mean angle (degrees). The results showed a modification in the swimming pattern dependent on both food environment and nutritive state of females. The nature of stimulations inducing these behavioural modifications, and their interactions with the individual nutritive state are briefly discussed. 相似文献

Most Phocids are thought to reduce their food intake during the breeding and moulting seasons, even though fish are not in short supply. The present study of a captive breeding colony of harbour seals explored the relationship between changes in amount eaten, social behaviour and general activity levels. Even though the animals were given free access to food, over the year the daily amount they ate varied in three cycles. Food eaten fell below average between pupping and mating in June‐July, and fell again in November until early December, for a third time in mid February, and again in early May. Levels surpassed average during and shortly after moulting, and again in late December. Observations made during the summer and early fall revealed that the adult males became more active, and engaged in more social interaction when they were eating less. The female showed no such activity change as a function of appetite. Play occurred primarily when food levels were high. These results are discussed in the context of systems interaction theories of motivation. 相似文献

The length of the posterolateral spines in the rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, is variable. The effect of the length of these spines on the clearance rates of B. calyciflorus was examined under laboratory conditions using radioactively-labelled yeast (Rhodotorula) and bacteria (Aerobacter). The hypothesis that individuals with longer spines have higher clearance rates than those of similarly-sized individuals with shorter spines was rejected. The effect of body length (L) on the clearance rates (C) of short-spined and long-spined animals was also examined. Statistically significant linear regressions of the form log10 C = aL + b, were derived for both types. The slopes of both regressions were similar and suggest that clearance rate in B. calyciflorus increases as a cube function of body length. 相似文献

Laboratory experiments were performed on the schooling and feeding behaviour of Trichogaster fasciatus . There was a tendency on the part of individuals of similar size to school together; the instinct being stronger in younger specimens. Unavailability of similar-sized individuals led to schooling by members of different size-groups. Column feeding was exhibited by the fish. While feeding at the bottom, the fishes formed angles varying from 30°90°. Larger individuals formed a right angle more often than younger members of the species. Optimum degree of crowding seemed necessary for active feeding as confinement of single individual, or overcrowded condition, both resulted in a decline of feeding activity. 相似文献

The number of Rotifer taxa known from Mauritania, is raised from 8 to 90. 61% of these are cosmopolitan, 1 is temperate — boreal, 18% are thermophilic and 20% are tropicopolitan. Most of them are widely distributed in Africa, but some species have limited distributions. The presence of Keratella testudo and Wolga spinifera is remarkable and is probably related to the unusual climatic conditions in the SW Sahara. One phenotype or forma is new to science. 相似文献

The feeding behaviour of the Talek clan of spotted hyaenas in the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, was monitored continuously for 7 years. Talek hyaenas adapted to large temporal variations in prey abundance by being opportunistic predators. During the first half of the year, the hyaenas fed on resident ungulates, and their diet consisted mainly of topi and Thomson's gazelles. Upon arrival of the migratory herds of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti, Talek hyaenas switched to feeding on the wildebeest which provided them with a superabundance of food for about 3 months. After the migratory animals returned to the Serengeti, Talek hyaenas experienced a period of reduced prey abundance due to the temporary dispersion of resident ungulates. At this time hyaenas hunted the few remaining wildebeest, and also increased their use of the remaining resident animals. Although Talek hyaenas were generally opportunistic in their feeding behaviour, they did exhibit clear dietary preference for larger prey species, particularly wildebeest. Finally, carrion comprised only 5% of the biomass consumed by Talek hyaenas, the lowest proportion of carrion in the diet of any Crocuta population studied to date. 相似文献

The feeding behaviour of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the Sainte‐Marguerite River, Quebec, Canada, varied with the characteristics of turbulent flow. Simulations indicated that juveniles would decrease their swimming costs during attacks by 19·8% in low and by 31·1% in high turbulent conditions by initiating movements in low‐speed flow events. The real swimming costs did not differ from the swimming costs estimated for a situation where fish initiate their movements at randomly selected flow velocities. The juvenile Atlantic salmon did not seem to prefer low‐speed flow events when initiating their movements. The proportion of time used for movements by fish decreased with an increase in the mean and the s . d . of the flow velocity. 相似文献

Atorella japonica were observed by TEM to examine the nerve plexus in the capitulum of the polyp and the cross-striated muscle cells of the strobila. The nerve plexus included a number of neuromuscular junctions and many interneural synapses. Neuromuscular junctions contained two types of synaptic vesicle: clear and small (ca 75 nm diam.), and dense cored and large (ca 120 nm diam.). The first type of vesicle always appeared near the presynaptic membrane and the second type was distributed behind the former. In interneural synapses, two types of vesicle which were similar to neuromuscular synaptic vesicles were recognized. They were distributed in a pattern similar to that of the neuromuscular synaptic vesicles, but these vesicles were found on both sides of the two synaptic membranes. 相似文献

The labrisomid Dialommus fuscus , endemic to the Galapagos archipelago, is a predator of crustaceans, which moves up and down the intertidal zone with the tides. Its divided eye and elongated body permit it to forage in the wet sections of the intertidal habitat during low tide, both on the rocks and below the water line and in tide pools. Compared with other intertidal fishes (e.g. Bathygobius sp.), it was present on the rock flat in significantly smaller tide pools nearer to the water line during low tide. 相似文献
