Streptococcus pneumoniae is a member of the Mitis group of streptococci which, according to 16S rRNA-sequence based phylogenetic reconstruction, includes 12 species. While other species of this group are considered prototypes of commensal bacteria, S. pneumoniae is among the most frequent microbial killers worldwide. Population genetic analysis of 118 strains, supported by demonstration of a distinct cell wall carbohydrate structure and competence pheromone sequence signature, shows that S. pneumoniae is one of several hundred evolutionary lineages forming a cluster separate from Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus infantis. The remaining lineages of this distinct cluster are commensals previously collectively referred to as Streptococcus mitis and each represent separate species by traditional taxonomic standard. Virulence genes including the operon for capsule polysaccharide synthesis and genes encoding IgA1 protease, pneumolysin, and autolysin were randomly distributed among S. mitis lineages. Estimates of the evolutionary age of the lineages, the identical location of remnants of virulence genes in the genomes of commensal strains, the pattern of genome reductions, and the proportion of unique genes and their origin support the model that the entire cluster of S. pneumoniae, S. pseudopneumoniae, and S. mitis lineages evolved from pneumococcus-like bacteria presumably pathogenic to the common immediate ancestor of hominoids. During their adaptation to a commensal life style, most of the lineages gradually lost the majority of genes determining virulence and became genetically distinct due to sexual isolation in their respective hosts.  相似文献

Mating behaviour of woodfrogs was investigated in a woodland pond in southeastern Michigan. Males became sexually mature one year before females and outnumbered females by 5.6 to 1 at the breeding site. Males employed searching behaviour to obtain mates. Yearly male mating success varied from 0 to 2 matings, and larger males had a greater probability of mating than smaller males. The mating season lasted less than 10 days. Most egg masses were deposited in 1 m2 of a 256-m2 pond. Experimental introduction of egg masses to the breeding site indicated that presence of eggs was sufficient to stimulate egg deposition. The influence of selection for synchronous sexual receptivity in females, communal egg deposition, and delayed female sexual maturation on male mating behaviour and variation in male mating success is discussed.  相似文献

Lifetime mating success of male azure damselflies (Coenagrion puella) was measured in a natural population. The major determinant of mating success is the number of days a male spends at the breeding site, which is mostly determined by a male's adult lifespan. Long-lived males have a higher mating rate than short-lived males, and daily mating rate increases with age up to 6 days, then falls. Large males live longer, but have a lower daily mating rate than small males. These effects of size are very weak, accounting for no more than 2% of the daily variance in mating success. The only overall effect of size on lifetime mating success is that males at both extremes of the size distribution are more likely to fail to mate. Chance differences in the number of females encountered are sufficient to account for the remaining variance in mating success. The weather is also shown to have a major effect on mating success. We draw attention to the ways in which it may be misleading to draw conclusions about the action of sexual selection from studies of daily, rather than lifetime, reproductive success. We provide evidence to support the view that variance in male reproductive success is neither evidence for sexual selection, nor a measure of its intensity.  相似文献

The Thaumarchaeota SAGMCG-1 group and, in particular, members of the genus Nitrosotalea have high occurrence in acidic soils, the rhizosphere, groundwater and oligotrophic lakes, and play a potential role in nitrogen cycling. In this study, the specific oligonucleotide fluorescence in situ hybridization probe SAG357 was designed for this Thaumarchaeota group based on the available 16S rRNA gene sequences in databases, and included the ammonia-oxidizing species Nitrosotalea devanaterra. Cell permeabilization for catalyzed reporter deposition fluorescence in situ detection and the hybridization conditions were optimized on enrichment cultures of the target species N. devanaterra, as well as the non-target ammonia-oxidizing archaeon Nitrosopumilus maritimus. Probe specificity was improved with a competitor oligonucleotide, and fluorescence intensity and cell visualization were enhanced by the design and application of two adjacent helpers. Probe performance was tested in soil samples along a pH gradient, and counting results matched the expected in situ distributions. Probe SAG357 and the CARD-FISH protocol developed in the present study will help to improve the current understanding of the ecology and physiology of N. devanaterra and its relatives in natural environments.  相似文献

Polyandrous females often mate with more than two males, and yet most studies of postcopulatory sexual selection involve only two males. In insects, second-male sperm precedence is usually taken as evidence of overall last-male sperm precedence despite some studies to the contrary. Furthermore, the processes or mechanisms causing the patterns are often unknown and yet are important when estimating how postcopulatory sexual selection might act on males. Whether the patterns and processes change in normal sperm competitive situations and the effects of other factors besides mating order need to be examined to better assess the evolutionary potential of postcopulatory sexual selection. In this study, I assessed the effects of mating interval and number of mating males on sperm precedence patterns and their causal mechanisms in the mealworm beetle, Tenebrio molitor. Last-male sperm precedence was the same when two or three males mated, but also depended on mating intervals and hence mechanisms of paternity bias. However, when females mated with many males, one of the mechanisms no longer created last-male sperm precedence. This example illustrates the importance of knowing both the patterns and mechanisms of paternity bias and whether they change depending on female mating frequency to make reasonable inferences about the potential for postcopulatory sexual selection on males. In jawed vertebrates, the Dlx code, or nested expression patterns of Dlx genes, specify the dorsoventral polarity of pharyngeal arches, downstream of endothelin-1 (Edn-1) and its effectors, Bapx1 (Nkx3.2) and dHand (Hand2). To elucidate the evolution of the specification mechanism of the oropharyngeal skeletal system, lamprey homologs of Dlx, Edn, endothelin receptor (Ednr), Bapx1, and dHand were identified. Our analysis suggested that the Edn gene family emerged at the advent of vertebrates, and that gene duplications leading to the different Edn gnathostome subtypes (Edn1-3) occurred before the cyclostome-gnathostome split. This timing of gene duplications, giving rise to multiple subtypes, was also implied for Dlx, Ednr, Hand, and Bapx. In lamprey embryos, nested expressions of Dlx genes were not observed in pharyngeal arches, nor was any focal expression of Bapx1, known in gnathostomes to specify the jaw joint. The dHand homolog, however, was expressed more intensively ventrally, as in gnathostomes. Lamprey homologs of Edn-1 and EdnrA were also shown to be expressed as described in mice, indicating involvement of this signaling pathway in the craniofacial patterning early in vertebrate evolution. These results suggest that the last common ancestor of all the extant vertebrates would have possessed basic gene repertoires involved in oropharyngeal patterning in gnathostomes, but the elaborate genetic program leading to the Dlx code is likely to have been acquired uniquely in gnathostomes.  相似文献

fog-2 and the Evolution of Self-Fertile Hermaphroditism in Caenorhabditis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Somatic and germline sex determination pathways have diverged significantly in animals, making comparisons between taxa difficult. To overcome this difficulty, we compared the genes in the germline sex determination pathways of Caenorhabditis elegans and C. briggsae, two Caenorhabditis species with similar reproductive systems and sequenced genomes. We demonstrate that C. briggsae has orthologs of all known C. elegans sex determination genes with one exception: fog-2. Hermaphroditic nematodes are essentially females that produce sperm early in life, which they use for self fertilization. In C. elegans, this brief period of spermatogenesis requires FOG-2 and the RNA-binding protein GLD-1, which together repress translation of the tra-2 mRNA. FOG-2 is part of a large C. elegans FOG-2-related protein family defined by the presence of an F-box and Duf38/FOG-2 homogy domain. A fog-2-related gene family is also present in C. briggsae, however, the branch containing fog-2 appears to have arisen relatively recently in C. elegans, post-speciation. The C-terminus of FOG-2 is rapidly evolving, is required for GLD-1 interaction, and is likely critical for the role of FOG-2 in sex determination. In addition, C. briggsae gld-1 appears to play the opposite role in sex determination (promoting the female fate) while maintaining conserved roles in meiotic progression during oogenesis. Our data indicate that the regulation of the hermaphrodite germline sex determination pathway at the level of FOG-2/GLD-1/tra-2 mRNA is fundamentally different between C. elegans and C. briggsae, providing functional evidence in support of the independent evolution of self-fertile hermaphroditism. We speculate on the convergent evolution of hermaphroditism in Caenorhabditis based on the plasticity of the C. elegans germline sex determination cascade, in which multiple mutant paths yield self fertility.  相似文献

Two Grapholita species (G. molesta and G. dimorpha) cause serious losses in apple production by means of direct fruit damage and destruction. These two congeners occurred at similar seasons in the same orchards. Furthermore, the two species occurred in similar population sizes in apple orchards, though G. molesta occurred much more in total occurrence density than did G. dimorpha in a pear orchard. The two species share two major sex pheromone components, (Z)-8-dodecenyl acetate (Z8-12:Ac) and (E)-8-dodecenyl acetate (E8-12:Ac), but differ with regard to the relative mixture ratio necessary to create conditions of maximal attraction. To develop a simultaneous mating disruption (SMD), a mass ratio of 95:5 of Z8-12:Ac and E8-12:Ac was selected due to its high cross-calling activity and subsequent high mating disruption against both species. When the mixture was applied to orchards, it resulted in significant mating disruption against both species. However, mating disruption efficacy was slightly higher in G. dimorpha than in G. molesta. Application dose and dispenser type affected efficacy duration of SMD. In addition, the high density occurrence of G. molesta significantly reduced the SMD efficacy. Using a wax-type of dispenser, an application of SMD in 100?g per hectare dispersed in early spring recorded >90% mating disruption efficacy through the entire growing season against both Grapholita species.  相似文献

Recent works have shown that mixed mating systems often evolve despite strong inbreeding depression and reproductive assurance, which is one of the widely accepted explanations for the evolution of selfing. However, there have been few empirical studies on the relationship between mixed mating and reproductive assurance in perennial plants. In the herbaceous perennial, Kosteletzkya virginica, delayed selfing induced from context-dependent style curvature offers reproductive assurance, and adverse weather conditions significantly reduce pollinator visitation rates. In this study, our goals were (i) to experimentally evaluate pollinator failure rate, reproductive assurance, selfing rate and the relationships between them, and (ii) to measure inbreeding depression across multiple growth seasons. Results indicate that both population selfing rates and reproductive assurance are significantly and positively correlated with field estimates of pollinator failure rates, and there is a strong relationship between selfing rates and reproductive assurance. Inbreeding depression across multiple growth seasons ranged from 0.621 to 0.665, and there were no significant differences among different seasons. Our data demonstrates that a mixed mating system is beneficial because frequent pollinator failure has allowed reproductive assurance to evolve through delayed selfing which minimizes the risk of seed discounting and is still advantageous despite high inbreeding depression.  相似文献

A quantitative genetic model of the joint evolution of female mating preferences and sexual dimorphism in homologous characters of the sexes is described for polygamous species with no male parental effort, such that mating preferences are selectively neutral and evolve only by indirect selection on genetically correlated characters. The male character and the homologous female character are each under stabilizing natural selection toward an optimum phenotype. At an evolutionary equilibrium the female character under natural selection is at its optimum, whereas there is a line of possible equilibria between female mating preferences and the male character. The line of equilibria may be stable or unstable, depending on the intensity of natural selection, the type of mating preferences, and the inheritance of the characters. Various mechanisms for maladaptive evolution of mating preferences and sexual dimorphism are discussed.  相似文献

A generation matrix theory of full-sib mating is developed in which 13 mating "classes" are distinguished according to identity of genes in individuals mated and identity of genotypes as belonging to homozygous, parental, or offspring sets. The 13 times 13 matrix reveals some properties of the full-sib mating system not shown by previous work. The eigenvalues and a set of eigenvectors for the generation matrix, and the general solution for the frequencies of mating classes among descendants of an original mating of genotypes ab times cd, are given. The genotypic array of descendants in an arbitrary generation is also given. A new formula is derived for the coefficient of inbreeding in generation n + m in terms of coefficients of inbreeding in earlier generations. An algorithm is presented for calculating the probability of a given situation of identity of alleles carried by two individuals given only the indices of their own respective generations and the generation of their most recent common ancestor. The application of such probabilities to obtaining covariances between relatives in a full-sib mating system, under the assumptions of independence and non-interaction among loci, is illustrated. All results are shown to agree with previous work in special cases. All possible full sib, generation n - 1 parent-generation n + m offspring, and generation n uncle-generation n + m nephew covariances for 1 less than n + m less than or equal to 8 are obtained using the given algorithm.  相似文献

Social and mating systems can be influenced by the distribution, abundance, and economic defendability of breeding partners and essential resources. Polygyny is predicted where males can economically defend multiple females or essential resources used by females. In contrast, monogamy is predicted where neither sex can monopolise multiple partners, either directly or through resource control, but where one mate is economically defendable. The mating system and reproductive behaviour of five species of coral reef goby were investigated and contrasted with population density and individual mobility. The two most abundant species (Asterropteryx semipunctatus and Istigobius goldmanni) were polygynous. In contrast, the less populous and more widely dispersed epibenthic species (Amblygobius bynoensis, Amblygobius phalaena and Valenciennea muralis) were pair forming and monogamous. All five species had low mobility, mostly remaining within metres (3 epibenthic species) or centimetres (2 cryptobenthic species) of a permanent shelter site. Interspecific differences in the mating system may have been shaped by differences in population density and the ability of reproductive individuals to economically defend breeding partners/sites. However, in a test of mating system plasticity, males of the three monogamous species did not mate polygynously when given the opportunity to do so in experimental manipulations of density and sex ratio. Mate guarding and complex spawning characteristics, which have likely co-evolved with the monogamous mating system, could contribute to mating system inflexibility by making polygynous mating unprofitable for individuals of the pair forming species, even when presented with current-day ecological conditions that usually favour polygyny.  相似文献

Alcohol dehydrogenase (alcohol: NAD oxidoreductase, E.C. 1.1.1.1.) was purified from Thea sinensis seeds. Its M.W was 95000 and it was composed of two homogeneous subunits with MWs of 47000. The agglutinating activity of insect serum against vertebrate erythrocytes has been examined for two insect species, the cockroach Periplaneta americana and the locust Schistocerca gregaria. Differences were found between the two insect species, in that cockroach serum agglutinated a wider range of erythrocyte types than did locust serum and the titre of the agglutinating activity of cockroach serum was higher in all cases. The results of attempts to inhibit the agglutinating activity using a variety of sugars and glycoproteins revealed that the combining specificities of the agglutinating molecules of the two species differed. Agglutination of rat erythrocytes by cockroach serum was not inhibited by any of the sugars or glycoproteins tested, whereas several of these compounds, in particular sucrose, partially inhibited the agglutination of rat erythrocytes by locust serum.The significance of these results is discussed in relation to the observation that haemocytes of the cockroach respond to a wider range of transplanted tissues in vivo than do those of the locust.  相似文献
