La Synthèse de l'Acide Désoxyribonucléique au Cours du Cycle de Division de Trypanosoma mega

SYNOPSIS. Tritiated thymidine and autoradiographic methods were used to investigate the cyclic DNA synthesis in the culture form of Trypanosoma mega. It was found that the mean generation time of 18.9 hours comprises four successive periods: G₁, S, G₂ and D. The interphase lasts through the first three. S is the phase of DNA synthesis of both the nucleus and the kinetonucleus (kinetoplast). The cell divides during D, beginning with the division of the kinetonucleus. The respective durations of G₁, S, G₂ and D are 8.5, 7, 2 and 1.4 hours. The close time relationship between the two DNA synthesizing bodies is considered as bringing support to the old theory of the Binucleates and the possible genetic function of the kinetonucleus is suggested.     

La evaluación de la calidad de vida en personas con demencia

Quality of life (QoL) is one of the most important outcome variables in the study of the efficacy of interventions with people with dementia. However, its assessment is difficult 1) because it is a complex construct for which there is no unified theoretical or conceptual approach, and 2) because of the inherent difficulties in the cognitive impairments of the people under study. In this work different methods and instruments to this end are reviewed, and related findings are discussed. It is important to take into account the subjective view of the assessed person, as assessments done by proxies tend to underestimate QoL. In spite of the need for further development in this field, it is concluded that the instrument of choice is the QOL-AD, as it is change-sensitive, it correlates with health measurements, it is translated into several languages and it can be administered to people with low MMSE scores.

In Peyronie’s disease, a penile curvature makes sexual intercouse painful or impossible. Surgery is a treatment option after medical treatment failure. The aim of surgery is to restore an erection allowing sexual intercourse. Beside corpus cavernosus modeling procedures, penile prosthesis implantation (i.e.,semi-rigid, inflatable, orimplants) is rarely indicated. Such procedures should be based on erectile response to intracavernous injection and penile and corpus cavernosus anatomy.

La grotte de Niaux,théâtre des illusions

Niaux Cavern, one of the great decorated caves, has been continuously open to the public. Despite its apparent accessibility, there is much that remains beyond our comprehension. One of the most inaccessible images is in the much visited Salon Noir. It is panel number four which contains a powerful but puzzling figure sometimes referred to as the Crossed Bison. This paper is an attempt to reach into the mind of the individual who produced that image to show how that artist's evident understanding of optical illusions, as well as an intuitive understanding of the theory of mind, propelled its creation for a specific graphic purpose.
