More than 100 species of gastropods from vent and seep localities around the world are reviewed, based on literature information and new material. The following new taxa are described (localities with parentheses, systematic position within brackets): Cantrainea macleani sp.n. (Louisiana Slope) [Turbinidae]; Fucaria striata gen. et sp.n. (Juan de Fuca Ridge area), Vetuloniaphalcata sp.n. (North Fiji Basin) [both Trochidae]; Protolira valvatoides gen. et sp.n. (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) [Skeneidae]; Ventsia tricarinata gen. et sp.n. (Lau Basin), Bruceiella globulus gen. et sp.n. (Lau Basin) [both tentatively in Skeneidae]; Melanodrymia brightae sp.n. (Juan de Fuca Ridge area), Pachydermia sculpta sp.n. (Lau Basin), Planorbidella gen.n., P. depressa sp.n. (Lau Basin), Ctenopelta porifera gen. et sp.n. (EPR 13°N)[Peltospiridae]; Helicrenion reticulatum gen. et sp.n. (Lau Basin), Lepfogyra inflata sp.n. (Lau Basin) [families unknown]; Desbruyeresia spinosa gen. et sp.n. (Lau Basin), D. cancellata sp.n.(Lau Basin), D. melanioides sp.n. (Lau Basin), Provanna buccinoides sp.n. (Lau Basin) [Provannidae]; Hyalogyra vitrinelloides sp.n. (Lau Basin), Hyalogyrina grasslei s p a (Guaymas Basin)[Hyalogyrinidae fam. n.], Xylodiscula major sp.n. (North Fiji Basin) [Xylodisculidae]. The external morphology of the soft parts [for Ifremeria and Alviniconcha (Provannidae) also the anatomy] is described for most of the taxa involved. Some features in the biology and distribution of the gastropod fauna are discussed. About half the fauna consists of species belonging to families or superfamilies endemic to this environment. One-fifth of the remaining species belong to taxa normally associated with biogenic substrates in the deep sea. Alviniconcha hessleri has previously been shown to harbour chemosynthetic bacteria in the gill; Ifremeria nautilei is here confirmed to do the same. Ctenopelta porifera, and Hirtopelta hirta are suspected to have such bacteria because of reduction of the alimentary system.  相似文献

A persistent patch of high biomass water, associated with the Juan de Fuca Eddy, is often observed in surface chlorophyll a images off the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. Outbreaks of toxic Pseudo-nitzschia spp. along the Washington, USA, coast are believed to correlate with the transport of waters from Juan de Fuca Eddy southward to Washington beaches. A time series of Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) satellite ocean color images from late May 1999 of coastal waters off Washington and Vancouver Island, processed for surface chlorophyll a concentration and spectral remote sensing reflectance, captured a transport event where water from the Juan de Fuca Eddy was transported onto the Washington shelf. Strong upwelling-favorable winds appeared to deform the patch over an 8-day period and move it southward into Washington coastal waters with surface velocities of approximately 8–16 km d−1. SeaWiFS and sea surface temperature imagery showed the local phytoplankton response to wind-driven coastal upwelling restricted to a narrow (10–15 km) region along the Washington coast. Although we did not observe transport of high biomass water originating in the Juan de Fuca Eddy to Washington beaches in May 1999, transport of Pseudo-nitzschia cells could occur following a rapid shift to downwelling-favorable conditions. Tracking the trajectory of surface waters from the Juan de Fuca Eddy by remote sensing could be used to trigger conditional sampling for domoic acid along the Washington coast.  相似文献

Cocculiniform limpets of the families Cocculinidae and Pyropeltidaeare here reported for the first time on whale bone in the deepsea. The new species and records of previously described speciesare from four whale-falls at bathyal depths on the continentalmargin off California, from Monterey Bay to the Catalina Basin. The family Cocculinidae is represented by the new species Cocculinacraigsmithi. With few exceptions, the previously known speciesof Cocculinidae are known from wood substrates. The family Pyropeltidaeis represented by three species: Pyropelta musaica McLean &Haszprunar, 1987, originally described from the Juan de Fucahydrothermal vents, Pyropelta corymba McLean & Haszprunar,1987, originally described from the hydrothermal vent habitatat the Guaymas Basin, and one new species, P. wakefieldi. Thetwo previously known species of Pyropelta have heretofore beenregarded as obligate members of the sulfide habitat of hydrothermalvents. Pyropelta species are the first gastropods known fromboth habitats. Like the hydrothermal-vent habitat, the newlyreported habitat on whale bone is also a sulfide-rich, reducingenvironment. A microcomputer simulation model is presented that describesthe generalized plankton production dynamics, in the surfacemixed layer, of the Juan de Fuca Eddy located on the southwesternBritish Columbia continental shelf. The Juan de Fuca Eddy simulationmodel evaluates how the annual biomass production of diatoms, copepods and euphausiids is forced by plankton feeding interactions, seasonal variability in upwelling, water temperature and solarradiation, and generalized fish predation. The model estimatesannual primary production of 345 g C m–2 year–1and secondary production of 19.4 g C m–2 year–1for copepods and 6 g C m–2 year–1 for euphausiids, during 1985–89; -90% of the annual plankton productionwas generated during the April-October upwelling season. Perturbationsof 22 abiotic and biotic parameters, one at a time by ±10%of nominal values, indicated that oceanic variability (e.g.upwelling rate) most strongly affected primary production. Conversely, zooplankton production was most sensitive to variability inbiological parameters describing zooplankton grazing potentialand growth (e.g. gross growth efficiency). Simulated seasonalbiomass patterns of diatoms, copepods and euphausiids were foundto closely match empirical data. However, euphausiid biomassproduction in the Juan de Fuca Eddy alone was unable to meetthe demands of estimated pelagic fish consumption. Local Eddyeuphausiid populations had to be supplemented, from regionaleuphausiids. by a mechanism that is proposed to be linked tothe seasonal pattern and intensity of positive Ekman transport(upwelling).  相似文献

Recent explorations of hydrothermal vents in the eastern Pacific (Juan de Fuca spreading zone, Guaymas Basin in the Gulf of California, East Pacific Rise at 21° N and 13° N, and Galapagos Rift) and on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge have revealed many copepods, mostly siphonostomatoids with few poecilostomatoids. In these habitats in depths from 1 808 to 3 650 m water temperatures may reach nearly 15 ° C. Among more than 22 000 copepods from vents examined two new families, 11 new genera, and 32 new species were represented. In addition, two new copepods were found in 3 260 m at cold seeps at the base of the West Florida Escarpment in the Gulf of Mexico, an environment not thermally active, with water temperatures about 4.39 °C.Some of these copepods were associated with host invertebrates such as a Nuculana-like protobranch bivalve, a polychaete, and two species of shrimps. Others were obtained from washings of bivalves or vestimentiferans or by means of corers or slurp guns.  相似文献

Deep-sea bivalves of the Xylophagaidae, a poorly known group, are obligate wood-borers. Deployment of wood in three submarine canyons off the Iberian coast, the Blanes and La Fonera Canyons (Mediterranean Sea) and the Avilés Canyon (Cantabric Sea, Bay of Biscay), lead to the discovery of four xylophagaid species in our samples. Xylophaga dorsalis (the dominant species), X. atlantica, X. cf. anselli and the new species X. brava, were identified on the basis of morphological data, and supported by a phylogenetic reconstruction based on the nuclear genes 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA and including several genus of Xylophagaidae. Genetic divergence between species of Xylophaga varied between genes, ranging from 0.5 to 4.0% for the 18SrDNA and from 4.1 to 16.6% for the 28SrDNA. Xylophaga brava sp. nov. appeared to be restricted to the Mediterranean and morphologically resembled the closely related X. cf. anselli from the Cantabrian Sea. However, they clearly diverged in two well-supported clades. Low levels of intraspecific variability and higher interspecific divergence between species also supported the existence of these two different species. Morphologically they differ in the number of cirri at the siphon openings, in the shape of the posterior shell and in the size of prodissoconch II. The new species is characterized by having weak, poorly mineralized mesoplax and siphons united throughout, covered by a periostracal, non-calcified tube; distinct proximal and distal siphons, the former translucent and soft, the latter muscular, with concentric rings. Xylophaga atlantica, previously known only from the western Atlantic, is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea. Whether its presence in the Mediterranean indicates its natural distribution or reflects its recent introduction is unknown. Although xylophagaids have been previously reported to recruit heavily to wood deposited on the seabed, these four species colonized wood suspended 30 m above the seafloor.  相似文献

Thermococcus sp. strain CL1 is a hyperthermophilic, anaerobic, and heterotrophic archaeon isolated from a Paralvinella sp. polychaete worm living on an active deep-sea hydrothermal sulfide chimney on the Cleft Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. To further understand the distinct characteristics of this archaeon at the genome level, its genome was completely sequenced and analyzed. Here, we announce the complete genome sequence (1,950,313 bp) of Thermococcus sp. strain CL1, with a focus on H(2)- and energy-producing capabilities and its amino acid biosynthesis and acquisition in an extreme habitat.  相似文献

The Sovanco Fracture Zone and Blanco Transform Fault separate the Explorer, Juan de Fuca, and Gorda ridge systems of the northeastern Pacific Ocean. To test whether such offsets in the ridge axis create barriers to along-axis dispersal of the endemic hydrothermal vent animals, we examined the genetic structure of limpet populations previously identified as Lepetodrilus fucensis McLean, 1988 (Gastropoda, Lepetodrilidae). Mitochondrial DNA sequences and patterns of allozyme variation revealed no evidence that the 150-km-long Sovanco Fracture Zone impeded gene flow between the Explorer and Juan de Fuca populations. In contrast, the 450-km-long Blanco Transform Fault separates the limpets into highly divergent northern and southern lineages that we recognize as distinct species. We describe southern populations from the Gorda Ridge (Seacliff) and Escanaba Trough as Lepetodrilus gordensis new species and refer northern populations from the Explorer and Juan de Fuca ridge systems to L. fucensis sensu stricto. The species are similar morphologically, but L. gordensis lacks a sensory neck papilla and has a more tightly coiled teleconch. To assess the degree of isolation between these closely related species, we used the Isolation with Migration method to estimate the time of population splitting, effective sizes of the ancestral and derived populations, and rates of migration across the Blanco Transform Fault.  相似文献

We have taxonomically and phylogenetically characterized a new aerobic bacterial strain (JF-1) that contains photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes and which was recently isolated from black smoker plume waters of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. Strain JF-1 is a gram-negative, yellow-pigmented, motile bacterium that is salt-, pH-, and thermotolerant. These properties are consistent with an oligotrophic adaptation to varied environmental conditions thought to exist around deep-sea hydrothermal vents. The analysis of 16S rDNA sequences revealed that strain JF-1 forms a separate phylogenetic branch between the genus Erythromonas and the Erythromicrobium-Porphyrobacter-Erythrobacter cluster within the alpha subclass of the Proteobacteria. The taxonomic name Citromicrobium bathyomarinum (gen. nov., sp. nov.) is proposed for strain JF-1.  相似文献

Diversity at hydrothermal vents   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Aim To describe patterns of hydrothermal vent community diversity and dispersion at the intersegment scale (> 100 km). Location The area discussed is an approximately 170 km portion of the Juan de Fuca Ridge, a mid‐ocean ridge in the north‐east Pacific Ocean. Methods Samples of benthic invertebrates from hydrothermal vents on three segments of the Juan de Fuca are examined for community characteristics such as diversity, abundance and distribution. Results Species richness (55 species) and evenness are low. If the macrofauna only are considered, species richness is about 30% lower than when meiofauna are also considered. The geometric series describes the species‐abundance distribution. The relationship between vent species’ distribution and abundance is significantly positive (r2 = 0.818; P < 0.001). Alpha diversity is lower in patchy habitat than continuous habitat and gamma diversity is similar for both habitat types. Beta diversity is higher in patchy habitat. Local diversity is linearly related to regional diversity. Main conclusions Species richness is comparable to other highly disturbed systems. The geometric series species abundance model implies some degree of niche pre‐emption in the vent community and is consistent with the suggestion that the geometric series distribution can be found in species‐poor environments that experience harsh conditions and are structured by relatively few environmental factors. Species distribution and abundance are highly correlated. The regional species pool affects local vent diversity. Vent diversity studies should be conducted on at least the ridge scale.  相似文献

The genus Calyptogena (Bivalvia: Vesicomyidae) comprises highlyspecialized bivalves living in symbiosis with sulphur-oxidizingbacteria in reducing habitats. In this study, the genus is revisedusing shell and anatomical features. The work is based on typematerial, as well as on the extensive collection of vesicomyidsobtained during twelve expeditions to the Pacific and IndianOceans. Nine Recent species are ascribed to the genus Calyptogena, four of which are new: C. pacifica Dall, 1891, C. fausta Okutani,Fujikura & Hashimoto, 1993, C. rectimargo Scarlato, 1981,C. valdiviae (Thiele & Jaeckel, 1931), C. gallardoi Sellanes& Krylova, 2005, C. goffrediae n. sp., C. starobogatovin. sp., C. makranensis n. sp. and C. costaricana n. sp. Thecharacteristic features of Calyptogena are: shell up to 90 mmin length, elongate-elliptical or elongate; presence of escutcheon;presence of broad posterior ramus (3b) of right subumbonal cardinaltooth as well as right posterior nymphal ridge; absence of pallialsinus as a result of attachment of intersiphonal septal retractorimmediately adjacent to ventral surface of posterior adductor;absence of processes on inner vulva of inhalant siphon; presenceof inner demibranch only, with descending and ascending lamellaewith interlamellar septa not divided into separate tubes. Themost closely related taxa to Calyptogena are probably the genusIsorropodon Sturany, 1896, and the group of species representedby ‘Calyptogenaphaseoliformis Métivier,Okutani & Ohta, 1986. These groups have several charactersin common, namely absence of pallial sinus, presence of singleinner pair of demibranchs and absence of processes on innervulva of inhalant siphon. The worldwide distribution of thegenus Calyptogena suggests that methane seeps at continentalmargins are the major dispersal routes and that speciation waspromoted by geographical isolation. Recent species diversityand fossil records indicate that the genus originated in thePacific Ocean. Sufficient data to discuss the distribution atspecies level exist only for C. pacifica, which has a remarkablynarrow bathymetric range. Published studies on the physiologyof C. pacifica suggest that adaptation to a specific geochemicalenvironment has led to coexisting vesicomyid genera. The bacteria-containinggill of C. pacifica and other Calyptogena species is one ofthe most specialized in the family Vesicomyidae and may reflectthese ecological adaptations. The genus Tambja previously included 24 described species. Fournew species, T. tentaculata n. sp., T. gabrielae n. sp., T.zulu n. sp. and Tambja victoriae n. sp., from the Indo-Pacificare described. Tambja tentaculata n. sp., from Guam, is theonly known species in the genus with well developed, dorsolaterallygrooved, oral tentacles. Its inner lateral teeth have a bifidinner cusp with two long, sharp denticles. The oral tentaclesof T. tentaculata are more typical of Roboastra species, whilethe shape of the inner lateral teeth is more typical of Tambja.Nevertheless, the arrangement of the two cusps of the innerlateral teeth and the presence of a rachidian tooth withoutdenticles and with a central notch at the anterior edge, typicalof the species of the genus Tambja, suggest the placement withinthis genus. Tambja gabrielae n. sp., from Indonesia and PapuaNew Guinea, has dark green to dark brown ground colour withbright yellow patches scattered on the body. Tambja zulu n.sp. from Durban, South Africa, is characterized by a black groundcolour with slender yellow longitudinal lines. Tambja victoriaen. sp. is a new species from Papua New Guinea and Australiathat has frequently been misidentified as Roboastra arika, characterizedby its blue body colour and yellow lines. The four species aredistinguishable based on differences in body coloration, ofcharacters of the radula and of the reproductive system. Anoverview on distinguishing features of all known Indo-PacificTambja species is presented. (Received 21 June 2004; accepted 20 January 2005)  相似文献

Growth rates, ingestion rates and grazer yields (grazer volumeproduced/prey volume consumed) were measured for six protozoanspecies (ciliates: Favella sp., Strombidinopsis acuminatum,Uronema sp.; heterotrophic dinoflagellates: Amphidinium sp.,Gymnodinium sp., Noctiluca scintillans) in laboratory batchculture experiments. Comparative growth data indicate that theprymnesiophyte Isochrysis galbana, the prasinophyte Mantoniellasquamata, two cryptophyte species and several autotrophic dinoflagellatespecies were suitable foods for these grazers. When grown onoptimized diets at 13C, maximum ciliate growth rates (range0.77–1.01 day–1 uniformly exceeded maximum heterotrophicdioflagellate growth rates (range 0.41–0.48 day–1).A compilation of published data demonstrates that this growthrate difference persists across a range of ciliate and dinoflagellatetaxa and cell sizes. Comparison of volume-specific ingestionrates and yields for the six species studied here showed thatthere was no single explanation for this growth rate disparity.Heterotrophic dinoflagellates exhibited both low ingestion ratesand, in one case, low yields; ciliates were able to achievehigher growth rates via either higher ingestion rates or higheryields, depending on ciliate species. Volume yield increasedover time throughout the exponential growth phase in nearlyall experiments, suggesting variation in response to changingfood concentrations or long-term acclimation to culture conditions.Higher maximum ciliate growth rates mean that these grazershave the potential to exercise tighter control over incipientblooms of their prey than do heterotrophic dinoflagellates.  相似文献

Hydrobiological studies in the Straits of Dover show a differencebetween the characteristics of the French coastal water andthe open sea water. A cruise between Boulogne-sur-mer and Dover(October 15, 1985) confirms the existence of a frontal area(4 miles off the French coast). This area is characterized byan increase of the salinity (1%) and decrease of the suspendedmatter content (from 27 to 20 mg l–1), of primary production(from 15 to 3 mg C m–3h–1) and of chlorophyll aconcentration (from 4.5 to 1.5 mg m–3). The presence ofdifferent zooplanktonic species in the two water masses alsocharacterizes this discontinuity. Oncaea sp., Corycaeus anglicus,Centropages typicus and Calanus helgolandicus are indicatorspecies of open sea water, while Cyciopina littoralis and ‘Saphirella’are only present in coastal water.  相似文献

Several species of the diatom Pseudo‐nitzschia produce the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA). Consumption of fish and shellfish that have accumulated this potent excitotoxin has resulted in severe illness and even death in humans, marine mammals, and seabirds. Pseudo‐nitzschia pungens (Grunow ex Cleve) Hasle is a cosmopolitan diatom commonly occurring in the waters of the Pacific Northwest (PNW) and the eastern North Atlantic, including the North Sea. However, genetic and physiological relationships among populations throughout this large geographic distribution have not been assessed. Population genetic parameters (e.g., Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, linkage equilibrium, FST) calculated for P. pungens collected from the Juan de Fuca eddy region in the PNW indicated the presence of two distinct groups that were more divergent from each other than either was from a P. pungens sample from the North Sea. Geographic heterogeneity was also detected within each of the two PNW groups. These results suggested that the populations of P. pungens recently mixed in the Juan de Fuca eddy region (a seasonally retentive feature off the coasts of Washington State, USA, and Vancouver Island, Canada) but did not exchange genetic material by sexual reproduction. Alternatively, these two groups may be cryptic (morphologically identical, but reproductively isolated) species. Identifying cryptic diversity in Pseudo‐nitzschia is important for bloom prediction and aiding the identification of molecular markers that can be used for rapid detection assay development.  相似文献

Two new strains (AL1 and AL2) of hyperthermophilic, sulfur-reducing, heterotrophic archaebacteria from high-temperature (350°C) vents on the Juan de Fuca Ridge were highly barotolerant at their optimal growth temperatures (90 and 100°C, respectively). A trend towards barophily at pressures greater than those encountered in situ at the sea floor was demonstrated for the more extremely thermophilic strain (AL2), implying an ability to thrive in (unexplored) habitats well below accessible vent formations.  相似文献

The growth of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in mesotrophicLake Constance was measured in situ during a 13 month period.Experiments were conducted with 10 µm pre-filtered lakewater incubated in diffusion chambers at 3 m water depth atthe sampling location for 24 h. Growth rates were calculatedfrom changes in cell numbers occurring during the period ofincubation. Growth rates of all dominant taxa showed pronouncedseasonal variation (–0.13 to 1.76 day–1 and weregenerally highest in summer at high water temperatures. In situgrowth rates were well below maximum growth rates known forthe respective and similar species from laboratory experiments. While water temperature was a key parameter positively relatedto the growth of all HNF species, the effect of various potentialfood items was taxon specific and less clear. Bacterial abundancewas equally important as temperature for growth in the smallbactenvorous Spumella sp., but was insignificant for growthrates of the larger omnivorous Kathablepharis sp. In Spuniellasp., 84% of the observed seasonal variation of its growth ratecould be explained by temperature and bacterial food supply.Based on these results, a multiple linear regression equationwith temperature and bacterial concentration as dependent variableswas calculated for the growth rate of Spumella. Taxon-specificproduction rates were derived from growth rates and averagebiomass of these two species, and compared to total HNF productionestimated from previously measured community growth rates andbiomass in Lake Constance. Production peaks of Spumella sp.and Kathablepharis sp. alternated seasonally. Total HINF productionranged from –0.01 to 10 mg C m–3 day–1. Theaverage seasonal production varied between 1.4 and 33 mg C m–3day–1 over 6 consecutive years. These small protozoa thuscontribute a substantial amount to total zooplankton productionin Lake Constance.  相似文献

Volcanic ocean crust contains a global chemosynthetic microbial ecosystem that impacts ocean productivity, seawater chemistry and geochemical cycling. We examined the mineralogical effect on community structure in the aquifer ecosystem by using a four-year in situ colonization experiment with igneous minerals and glasses in Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Hole 1301A on the Juan de Fuca Ridge. Microbial community analysis and scanning electron microscopy revealed that olivine phases and iron-bearing minerals bore communities that were distinct from iron-poor phases. Communities were dominated by Archaeoglobaceae, Clostridia, Thermosipho, Desulforudis and OP1 lineages. Our results suggest that mineralogy determines microbial composition in the subseafloor aquifer ecosystem.  相似文献

Eighteen strains of flagellated protists representing nine species were isolated and cultured from four deep-sea hydrothermal vents: Juan de Fuca Ridge (2,200 m), Guaymas Basin (2,000 m), 21 degrees N (2,550 m) and 9 degrees N (2,000 m). Light and electron microscopy were used to identify flagellates to genus and, when possible, species. The small subunit ribosomal RNA genes of each vent species and related strains from shallow-waters and the American Type Culture Collection were sequenced then used for comparative analysis with database sequences to place taxa in an rDNA tree. The hydrothermal vent flagellates belonged to six different taxonomic orders: the Ancyromonadida, Bicosoecida, Cercomonadida, Choanoflagellida, Chrysomonadida, and Kinetoplastida. Comparative analysis of vent isolate and database sequences resolved systematic placement of some well-known species with previously uncertain taxonomic affinities, such as Ancyromonas sigmoides, Caecitellus parvulus, and Massisteria marina. Many of these vent isolates are ubiquitous members of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems worldwide, suggesting a global distribution of these flagellate species.  相似文献

Species of the gastropod genus Larochea Finlay, 1927 are shownto be scissurellids without an anal shell slit or foramen. TheNew Zealand species, L. miranda Finlay, 1927 and L. secundaPowell, 1937, brood their young in the right subpallial cavityagainst a modified inner lip that is set well behind the aperturalplane. Larochea scitula n.sp. is based on shells from WanganellaBank, southern Norfolk Ridge. Larocheopsis n. gen. is introducedfor a minute species from off northern New Zealand that lacksa shell brood chamber. Larochea miranda and Larocheopsis amplexan.sp. are either gonochoristic with smaller males or consecutivehermaphrodites, while Larochea secunda and L. scitula are evidentlygonochoristic, having mature males and females of similar size.
