We describe the behavioral repertoire of captive-born black tufted-eared marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) elicited by brief exposures to three potential mounted taxidermized predators (caracara hawk, Polyborus plancus; rattlesnake, Crotalus durissus; oncilla, Leopardus tigrina), and a stuffed toy. For each of the four stimuli, we submitted the subjects to a 9-min trial divided into three consecutive intervals: a 4-min pre-exposure baseline observation, a 1-min stimulus exposure, and a 4-min postexposure observation period. We positioned stimuli in front of each subject's home cage, and video-taped trials for behavioral analysis. During exposures to the potential taxidermized predators, we heard tsik-tsik vocalization and alarm behavior. After exposures, only the cat induced these reactions. All stimuli elicited observational reaction, albeit only during exposure intervals. Further comparisons between the three trial intervals indicated a decrease in the time spent in proximity to the cat during exposures, while an increase in proximity occurred when subjects were exposed to either the hawk or snake for the same period. Taken together, the behavioral responses during and after exposures to the taxidermized oncilla suggest that this stimulus is capable of inducing strong and persistent emotional reactions in Callithrix penicillata. 相似文献

Animal hybridization is well documented, but evolutionary outcomes and conservation priorities often differ for natural and anthropogenic hybrids. Among primates, an order with many endangered species, the two contexts can be hard to disentangle from one another, which carries important conservation implications. Callithrix marmosets give us a unique glimpse of genetic hybridization effects under distinct natural and human-induced contexts. Here, we use a 44 autosomal microsatellite marker panel to examine genome-wide admixture levels and introgression at a natural C. jacchus and C. penicillata species border along the São Francisco River in NE Brazil and in an area of Rio de Janeiro state where humans introduced these species exotically. Additionally, we describe for the first time autosomal genetic diversity in wild C. penicillata and expand previous C. jacchus genetic data. We characterize admixture within the natural zone as bimodal where hybrid ancestry is biased toward one parental species or the other. We also show evidence that São Francisco River islands are gateways for bidirectional gene flow across the species border. In the anthropogenic zone, marmosets essentially form a hybrid swarm with intermediate levels of admixture, likely from the absence of strong physical barriers to interspecific breeding. Our data show that while hybridization can occur naturally, the presence of physical, even if leaky, barriers to hybridization is important for maintaining species genetic integrity. Thus, we suggest further study of hybridization under different contexts to set well informed conservation guidelines for hybrid populations that often fit somewhere between “natural” and “man-made.” 相似文献

Communication about the presence of predators is an important benefit of group living. Critical information about the nature of danger can be conveyed through referential alarm calls. Raptors pose a significant predatory threat to callitrichid species. Unlike a raptor in flight, a perched raptor cannot attack suddenly at great speed, and it can be monitored from a safe distance. In this sense a perched bird may pose a threat more similar to that of a terrestrial predator such as a snake. Here we compare predatory contexts by addressing these two questions: 1) Do marmosets produce acoustically distinct alarm calls to snake models and perched raptor models? 2) Do the visual responses of the marmosets to the playbacks of perched raptor–elicited calls differ from those given to the playbacks of calls given in response to snakes? We recorded alarm calls from two groups of outdoor-housed Geoffroy’s marmosets (Callithrix geoffroyi) in response to predator models. Later, we played back stimuli created from these recordings to the marmosets and scored their gaze direction. Results show that calls given to models of perched raptors are acoustically distinct from those given to models of snakes. Further, the relative number of upward to downward looks while listening to the playbacks of perched raptor–elicited calls was significantly greater than it was for snake-elicited calls. Reactions to airborne raptors are known to elicit freezing or rapid flight, neither of which occurred in response to our playbacks. Our data suggest a greater complexity in the alarm call repertoire of marmosets than previously demonstrated. 相似文献

Captive studies and occasional trappings of wild individuals indicate that callitrichids have small size and body weight and lack sexual dimorphism. We compared body weights of captive and wild Callithrix jacchus obtained by repeatedly weighing subjects from two populations in Brazil. We obtained captive data by routinely weighing 138 individuals from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte colony and wild data via regular trapping of 243 individuals in 15 free-ranging groups from IBAMA's field site in Nísia Floresta. We assigned all subjects to one of four age classes—infant, juvenile, subadult, and adult—according to their birth dates or size, reproductive status, and dental development. There is no significant difference between males and females in any of the four age classes, but captive subjects were heavier than wild ones in all age classes but infant. Reproductive and nonreproductive adult females showed no statistical difference in weight. These results accord with previous reports of lack of body size sexual dimorphism in common marmosets and suggest that differences between wild and captive common marmosets are not constitutional, but are instead a consequence of diet and physical activity. The absence of weight difference between reproductive and nonreproductive females suggests that any possible advantage from high rank is outweighed by the costs of reproduction in common marmosets. 相似文献

Cross-fostering technique can be defined as adoption of infants by adults of other species. This phenomenon is poorly investigated because very young animals have few opportunities to interact peacefully with non-conspecific adults, either in captivity or in natural conditions. This study describes the induction of cross-fostering in captivity between white tufted-ear (Callithrix jacchus) and black tufted-ear marmosets (Callithrix penicillata). We conclude that this technique can be very useful for preserving the life of rejected by parents or orphan infants, mainly in the case of species with low reproduction rate in captivity or those threatened by extinction, as well for investigating the environmental effects on the typical behavior of species (courtship, food preference, vocalization patterns, e.g.). 相似文献

Locomotor activity rhythm in the common marmoset has been well described and characterized in captivity, but there is no information about rhythmic aspects of this behavior in free-ranging conditions. To investigate if the locomotor activity rhythm in free-ranging common marmosets is similar to that found in captive common marmosets, we observed reproductive animals from two groups that inhabited at the Experimental Forestry Station, in northeastern Brazil (6°5'S, 35°12'W). From December 1992 to October 1993 we recorded the frequency of locomotor activity by focal animal sampling. The records of locomotor activity were submitted to spectral analysis and to the Cosinor test. Common marmosets showed an average duration of the active phase of 11:37 h ± 13.8 min. Similar to recorded in captive common marmosets, circadian rhythmicity was found with peaks in the morning, and in the afternoon, characterizing a bimodal pattern with peaks separated by 8 hours. The presence of a rhythmic pattern in the locomotor activity in free-ranging and captive common marmosets suggests that this pattern is not determined by the environmental conditions in captivity, but it has a endogenous component that play an important role for adaptation of this species to different conditions. 相似文献

Members of captive colonies of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), a small New World primate, can occasionally be victims of repeated, and potentially fatal, attacks by a family-mate. This study examined the records of a colony, looking for past instances of such aggressions. The aim was to better understand the possible causes underlying this phenomenon and to identify variables that could minimize their occurrence. The results showed that both males and females behaved as aggressors at the same rate, but females attacked just females, whereas males attacked both males and females. Most aggressions involved siblings and occurred at a higher rate when the cages were occupied by more than 5 nonhuman animals. The influence of group size was significant only when females behaved as aggressors. This study suggests that several factors can determine the occurrence of these aggressions and that their relative importance depends on the sex of the aggressor. The results of this study highlight the importance of collecting further data to verify whether crowding in a confined space, rather than group size per se, affects the incidence of these aggressions. 相似文献

Signals that are functionally referential provide listeners with information about a signaler's external environment, such as the presence of a nearby predator. Just as alarm calls may signal the presence of a predator, food-associated calls may signal the presence of food. To date, however, the only conclusive evidence that conspecifics perceive information about food from food-associated calls comes from a single species, the domestic chicken. Geoffroy's marmosets, small, arboreal New World primates, often emit food-associated calls when finding or consuming food. We presented playbacks of food calls and control sounds to two groups of naturalistically housed marmosets and observed the frequency of food-related behaviors (FRBs) during the 20-min post-playback period. Relative to the control playbacks, food call playbacks elicited an increase in the frequency of two FRBs (foraging and feeding), lasting throughout the post-playback observations. Moreover, the effect of food call playbacks was robust, occurring without regard to the type of food eliciting the food calls, the rate of food calling, or whether the signaler was a member of the receiver's group. To our knowledge, this research is the first to demonstrate that the food-associated calls of a primate species, like the food-associated calls of domestic chickens, meet the perception criterion for functionally referential communication. The results are discussed in light of the affective and cognitive mechanisms that may underlie the responses of receivers to hearing food-associated calls given by marmoset conspecifics. 相似文献

Giardia intestinalis is a common protozoan parasite that can infect many laboratory animal primates, although its role as a contributor to the induction of gastrointestinal disease remains unclear. This study sought to investigate the prevalence of Giardia in a colony of common marmosets by using a Giardia antigen-capture assay and to address the possible eradication of this infection by using tinidazole, an antiprotozoal similar to metronidazole but requiring fewer doses. Among 31 colony marmosets, 13 (42%) were positive for Giardia. Two doses of oral tinidazole eliminated the infection in all animals. Repeat testing of the 13 Giardia-positive monkeys 1 y later showed that 11 remained negative and that treated animals had a significant increase in weight at 1 y. Giardia antigen is common in common marmoset feces, and treatment using oral tinidazole is possible and highly effective.Giardia intestinalis is a common zoonotic protozoan parasite causing diarrhea in humans and animals worldwide. Infection usually results from contact with the feces of an infected host or drinking water contaminated with Giardia cysts. As few as 10 cysts are necessary for infection in human subjects.36 Giardia causes both an acute disease and a chronic asymptomatic state. The most common clinical signs of acute disease are diarrhea, flatulence, foul stool, and abdominal cramps. In addition, Giardia has been implicated as a cause of cognitive impairment and stunted growth in infected children in developing countries.1,2,29Giardiasis has previously been reported to occur in a variety of laboratory primates, including several species of neotropical monkeys such as marmosets and squirrel monkeys.13,20,28 Such infections may pose a zoonotic risk to animal handlers and potentially affect colony health. Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) frequently manifest chronic wasting and inflammatory bowel disease known as ‘wasting marmoset syndrome.’ The etiology of the intestinal disease is unknown, but marmosets often present clinically with skeletal muscle atrophy, marked weight loss, alopecia, and a history of intermittent diarrhea.5,11,16,21,35 Likely no single infectious agent or nutritional deficiency causes the clinical spectrum, but rather a combination of factors result in antigenic stimulation of the intestinal tract resulting in the chronic disease. The presence of Giardia cannot be ruled out as a cofactor.Several studies have compared various diagnostic tools for detection of Giardia in fecal specimens. Multiple fecal tests for Giardial colonization are available, including antigen-detection enzyme immunoassays, immunochromatographic strips, and microscopy of wet-mounted stool after fecal flotation.9,24,37,38 Enzyme immunoassays are a rapid and precise tool for detecting Giardia in fecal specimens; test sensitivities and specificities have approached 100% in several studies.9,22,24,37 In addition, these studies have indicated that repeat stool sampling on different days may increase the yield of testing, because organisms are variably shed.9,14,36 The specific recommendation is to test 3 samples on alternate days or 3 samples within a 10-d span.38Treatment options for Giardia infection are varied and include metronidazole, albendazole, quinacrine, furazolidone, and several other nitroimidazoles including tinidazole, secnidazole, ornidazole, and nimorazole.15 The most common treatment choice in veterinary medicine is metronidazole; however, this drug requires 5 to 8 d of treatment and ensuring animal compliance is difficult.27 Several of metronidazole''s structural analogues, including tinidazole, are used as a single dose in the treatment of Giardiasis in humans with high cure rates (approximately 90%) and low complications.3,8,10,26,39In this study we examined the use of a commercially available antigen-capture assay to diagnose Giardiasis in a large breeding colony of common marmosets. To address possible eradication of the infection, we describe the safe use and efficacy of tinidazole as a new treatment option in this species. 相似文献

New World monkeys have polymorphic color vision, in which all males and some females are dichromats, while most females are trichromats. There is little consensus about which selective pressures fashioned primate color vision, although detection of food, mates and predators has been hypothesized. Behavioral evidence shows that males from different species of Neotropical primates seem to perceive the timing of female conception and gestation, although, no signals fulfilling this function have been identified. Therefore, we used visual models to test the hypothesis that female marmosets show chromatic and/or achromatic cues that may indicate the time of parturition for male and female conspecifics. By recording the reflectance spectra of female marmosets’ (Callithrix jacchus) sexual skin, and running chromatic and achromatic discrimination models, we found that both variables fluctuate during the weeks that precede and succeed parturition, forming “U” and inverted “U” patterns for chromatic and achromatic contrast, respectively. We suggest that variation in skin chroma and luminance might be used by female helpers and dominant females to identify the timing of birth, while achromatic variations may be used as clues by potential fathers to identify pregnancy stage in females and prepare for paternal burdens as well as to detect oestrus in the early post-partum period. 相似文献

Social organization in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) appears to be based on a hierarchy of dominance, in which dominant females limit the reproductive functioning of subordinates. Reduced fertility was documented for captive but not for wild females. We investigated social dynamics and hormonal profiles of females living in a wild group. We collected behavioral and hormonal data during 7 mo from the reproductive and two nonreproductive adult females (probably daughters), and their interactions with the reproductive male. The subjects lived in a monogamous group at Nísia Floresta field station in northeastern Brazil. We collected behavioral data as all day follows, once a week and fecal material twice a week. We analyzed fecal samples for cortisol and progesterone using enzyme immuno assay (EIA) techniques. During the first three months we monitored the reproductive female (GRE) and the oldest nonreproductive female, (GIO). After the disappearence of GIO, we monitored the next oldest subordinate adult female, (GRA). GRE had just given birth at the beginning of the study, and she gave birth 6 mo later. During the last 2 weeks of GRE's gestation, GRA showed elevated progesterone levels, indicating ovarian cycling. Cortisol levels from GRE and GRA reached very high levels then. During GRA's cycling period, her interactions with the reproductive male (GT) were lower than when she was not cycling. We saw sexual interactions only between GT and GRE. The results provide evidence that ovarian function in mature subordinate females might be affected by the reproductive condition of the dominant female. 相似文献

The dietary diversity of marmosets is substantial, which may reflect differences in their colour vision. This study examined the colour discrimination ability of a gummivore/insectivore callitrichid, Callithrix penicillata, which inhabits the Brazilian cerrado (bush savanna). A series of ecologically relevant tasks, involving a behavioural paradigm of discrimination learning in semi-natural conditions and the usage of ecologically relevant stimuli, was executed. Three marmosets, 2 males and a female, behaved like human dichromats, showing an impaired performance when orange and green stimuli had to be discriminated. In contrast, 2 females resembled human trichromats, discriminating those kinds of pairs. Our data suggest that Callithrix penicillata presents a polymorphic trichromacy, with dichromatic males and dichromatic or trichromatic females. 相似文献

Endocrine data and characteristics of nonconceptive ovarian cycling and pregnancy are limited within the genus Callithrix to the common marmoset (C. jacchus) and Wied's black tufted‐ear marmoset (C. kuhlii). This article presents patterns of urinary pregnanediol‐3‐glucuronide (PdG) excretion, as determined by enzyme immunoassay, throughout the course of ovarian cycling and pregnancy in white‐faced marmosets (C. geoffroyi). Furthermore, characteristics of reproductive parameters including litter size, duration of gestation, maternal age, and information about ovarian cycling following administration of contraceptives are also described. A steep increase in PdG, an indication of ovulation, characterizes normative ovarian cycles, with peak‐to‐peak intervals between cycles being 27.82 ± 1.49 days in length. PdG excretion (μg/mg Cr) across pregnancy peaked during the 1st and 2nd trimesters (1st = 20.71 ± 2.98, 2nd = 21.16 ± 2.60) and declined gradually to near preconception levels over the 3rd trimester until parturition (3rd = 5.74 ± 1.60). Gestation lasted 148.55 ± 1.89 days. Most pregnancies (82.8%) resulted in an immediate postpartum ovulation (PPO) of 17.45 ± 2.22 days with 58.3% of PPOs resulting in conception. No differences in PdG excretion during the 1st trimester between full pregnancies and miscarriages were found, and pregnancy characteristics such as litter size, duration of gestation, and maternal age were not associated with PdG concentrations. Administration of cloprostenol resulted in shorter peak‐to‐peak cycle durations, but ovulation was detectable with similar concentrations of peak PdG to a normal nonconceptive cycle. Conversely, medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) injections resulted in little to no PdG excretion across the ovarian cycle. Both methods of contraception providing effective prevention of conception. Overall, these results show that strong similarities in reproductive parameters persist within the genus Callithrix and to a lesser extent across the Callitrichidae family. Am. J. Chemical communication by scent-marking behavior in New World primates is used to prevent the access of potential competitors to a territory, to identify food resources and the reproductive condition of mates, among others. In common marmosets, primates of the Callitrichidae family, this behavior also occurs as olfactory identification of an individual or of the reproductive status of females. Despite this information, the diurnal variation and gender differences in the profile of this behavior remain to be investigated. The aims of this study were to establish the diurnal profile of the distribution of this behavior and the influence of the sex of markers. We used 18 adult common marmosets, Callithrix jacchus, 10 males and 8 females from 6 family groups (6 fathers and 4 sons; 4 mothers and 4 daughters). The frequency of scent-marking behavior was recorded for each animal over a period of 8 days, twice a week, for 4 weeks, starting when the animals left the nest box (approximately at 05:00 a.m.) until the end of the photophase, at about 05:00 p.m. A MANOVA test was performed to compare the frequency of scent-marking behavior at 2 hour intervals using pooled data for males and females. The results showed that significantly higher levels of scent-marking behavior occurred during the 03:00-05:00 p.m. interval compared to all other intervals. Lower values were recorded during the 11:00-13:00 interval and an effect of the sex factor was also found, with the values being higher for females than for males, although a significant difference was recorded only for the 07:00-09:00 interval. Minimal values for males were recorded during the 07:00-09:00 interval, whereas minimum values for females were recorded during the 11:00-13:00 interval. However, the highest values for both sexes continued to occur during the 15:00-17:00 interval. These results suggest that scent marking behavior in common marmosets has a preferential incidence at the end of the day and this might be occurring in association with feeding behavior. At this time these animals usually forage more to prepare for the night's fast. Since these animals can discriminate chemical clues as long as 24 hours after they have been left, the higher incidence of this behavior at this time probably will assure that the animals will localize feeding resources used on the preceding day. Significant elevation of scent marking behavior in females in relation to males was found only at 07:00-09:00 interval and seems to be associated with signalizing of reproductive status, preferential access to foraging or both. 相似文献

Resource distribution shapes many aspects of primate behavioral ecology. Though the spatial patterning of fruits, leaves, and insects has been explored among primate foods, comparatively less is known about exudate distributions. Tree exudates are a renewable resource, provide long-term evidence of exploitation, and may be selectively exploited to manipulate spatial distribution. We assessed the spatial patterning of trees gouged by common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) to determine if they exhibit a uniform, random, or clumped distribution. We also asked whether marmosets selectively gouge trees in home range centers, which may afford them exclusive access to exudates. We explored whether spatial or physical characteristics of trees predict how intensely gouged trees were exploited. The mean nearest neighbor distance of gouged trees was significantly closer than expected for a random distribution and Ripley’s K-function showed that gouged trees were clumped across all spatial scales in our study area. Clumping may enable marmosets to reduce day and home ranges and facilitate repeated gouging of trees. Gouged trees were not closer to marmosets’ home range centers than peripheries, nor were centrally located trees more intensely gouged. Increased gouging intensity was associated with larger tree circumferences, although this effect was primarily driven by interspecific differences in circumference. Although marmosets may benefit from exploiting clumped exudates, they do not concentrate gouging in areas where they are more likely to gain exclusive access. Species-specific tree characteristics such as exudate quality and/or bark properties may play a larger role in determining gouging patterns than intergroup feeding competition. 相似文献

Ideally, prey should respond to their predators efficiently, without over- or underreacting to the threat. This may be particularly important for small-bodied species for whom metabolic demands are high and predatory risk is great. In the current study, two family groups of Callithrix geoffroyi living outside in a rural setting at the Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species, San Diego Wild Animal Park, were observed before, during, and after ten presentations of a great horned owl model. The owl was mounted on a post on a nearby hillside, simulating a situation in which a real but nonimminent threat is posed. As controls, a model of a crow and a cloth bag were also presented, each for ten trials. During the 10 min presentations of the owl, rates of play and foraging decreased, and rates of locomotion and vigilant looking increased from baseline rates. Data on occupation of the best viewing area suggest that the marmosets shared the job of monitoring a potential threat. After the owl was removed, behavior quickly returned to baseline rates, with the exception of looking at the place where the owl had been, and play. Neither the bag nor the crow generated significant differences from the baseline condition that preceded it. Marmosets may reduce the costs of antipredator behavior by appropriately assessing the degree of risk and by quickly resuming important activities once a potential threat has passed. Am. J.
