The structure of a plant-pollinator food web   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The pollination biology literature is dominated by examples of specialization between plants and their pollinators. However, a recent review shows that it is generalization that prevails in the field, with most plants having a number of pollinators and most pollinators visiting a number of plants. Consequently, the vast majority of plant–pollinator interactions are embedded in a complex web of plant–pollinator interactions. These plant-pollinator webs can be studied in the manner of conventional food webs and the aim of this paper is to illustrate how contemporary methods of web construction and analysis can be applied to plant-pollinator communities.  相似文献

Physical, chemical and biological processes facilitate cross-habitat connections in lakes, prompting food webs to be supported by different subsidies. We tested the hypothesis that the pelagic food web is subsidized by littoral resources and fish foraging behaviour plays a major role in carbon flux and on food web structure in shallow hypereutrophic lakes. We performed a fish diet and carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses to predict the linkage between littoral and pelagic habitats in three shallow hypereutrophic lakes. Lakes differed in morphology, fetch, macrophyte composition and width of the littoral zone. δ13C signals of seston differed among lakes, but were similar to other producers. Macroinvertebrates and fish carbon signatures were more enriched in the lake co-dominated by emergent and submerged vegetation. Fish foraging behaviour indicates that more than the 80% of the carbon that sustain adult fish was channelled from the littoral. In conclusion, littoral carbon were relevant and sustain, in part, food web in these shallow lakes. Factors like the extension of the littoral zone, lake morphometry, and the dominance of multi-chain omnivorous fish facilitate the connection among lake compartments and the transference of littoral carbon to lake food web.  相似文献

We analyze a mathematical model of a simple food web consisting of one predator and two prey populations in a chemostat. Monod's model is employed for the dependence of the specific growth rates of the two prey populations on the concentration of the rate-limiting substrate and a generalization of Monod's model for the dependence of the specific growth rate of the predator on the concentrations of the prey populations. We use numerical bifurcation techniques to determine the effect of the operating conditions of the chemostat on the dynamics of the system and construct its operating diagram. Chaotic behavior resulting from successive period doublings is observed. Multistability phenomena of coexistence of steady and periodic states at the same operating conditions are also found.  相似文献

Successful invasion of a food web in a chemostat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A food web in a chemostat is considered in which an arbitrary number of competitor populations compete for a single, essential, nonreproducing, growth-limiting substrate, and an arbitrary number of predator populations prey on some or all of the competitor populations. Although any number of predator populations may prey on the same competitor population, each predator population preys on only one competitor population. The dynamics of substrate uptake is modeled by Lotka-Volterra or Michaelis-Menten (Holling type I or II), but the dynamics of competitor uptake is restricted to Lotka-Volterra. Based on certain parameters, the model predicts the asymptotic survival or extinction of each of the different populations and suggests how competitor and/or predator populations could successfully invade the chemostat with or without causing a diverse ecosystem to crash. Similarly, it suggests how the elimination of certain populations could result in a more diverse or less diverse system.  相似文献

Previous studies of communities implicate many potential mechanisms that can create alternate stable states. These include density-dependent foraging behavior, size refuges reached by early colonists, environmental feedback following disturbance, and different initial densities of intraguild predators. Previous work shows that alternate states of varying stability can occur in food webs containing the intraguild predators Blepharisma americanum and Tetrahymena vorax. Differences in colonization history could create the alternate states, consisting of dominance by either Blepharisma or Tetrahymena, but it was unclear whether results depended on effects of initial density or only on changes in the resource base. We manipulated initial densities of both species to determine if density effects alone could create alternate stable states. Convergence of these communities over time indicated that differences in initial density did not create alternate stable states. By default, other factors influenced by colonization history, such as resource availability, may produce alternate states. Models of alternate stable-state phenomena should incorporate differences in resource availability in addition to direct competitive and predatory interactions to provide a more complete depiction of the causes of differences in community composition in otherwise similar habitats.  相似文献

Background

Plants, plant-feeding insects, and insect parasitoids form some of the most complex and species-rich food webs. According to the classic escape-and-radiate (EAR) hypothesis, these hyperdiverse communities result from coevolutionary arms races consisting of successive cycles of enemy escape, radiation, and colonization by new enemy lineages. It has also been suggested that "enemy-free space" provided by novel host plants could promote host shifts by herbivores, and that parasitoids could similarly drive diversification of gall form in insects that induce galls on plants. Because these central coevolutionary hypotheses have never been tested in a phylogenetic framework, we combined phylogenetic information on willow-galling sawflies with data on their host plants, gall types, and enemy communities.  相似文献

Bird functions in a forest-canopy food web were evaluated by a large-scale field experiment using 'canopy' enclosures. By controlling the presence of two bird species, great tits (Parus major; foliage gleaner) and nuthatches (Sitta europaea; trunk gleaner), in the enclosures, their effect on predatory insects (ants), herbivorous insects (Lepidoptera larvae) and producers (oak trees) was quantified. Great tits reduced the density of Lepidoptera larvae and, indirectly, leaf damage, but had no impact on ants. Nuthatches decreased the density of ants but did not influence either Lepidoptera larvae or leaf damage. These results highlight species-specific functions of birds in the maintenance of forest ecosystems.  相似文献

Three of the statistics that are regularly used to describe food web structure have been defined in two different ways. The use of these statistics by several authors illustrates some of the problems caused by the existence of two different definitions for what is, at least in name, the same statistic.  相似文献

The strength of the direct effect by scraping cladocerans and the indirect effect of nutrient regeneration by filtering herbivorous cladocerans on periphyton growth was investigated in a littoral food web. Ten enclosures were erected in a lake in an area with artificial vegetation. Five enclosures were stocked with juvenile perch ( Perca fluviatilis ) and five lacked fish. In addition, a reference area in the artificial vegetation was sampled. The mesh size of the net surrounding the cages was chosen to allow an inflow of phytoplankton into the cages from the surrounding water. The periphyton and filtering herbivorous cladoceran biomasses were highest in the fish-free treatment. There was no difference in phytoplankton biomass between treatments despite the large difference in filtering herbivorous cladoceran biomass, suggesting that the inflow of phytoplankton into enclosures completely compensated for the loss due to filtering. The reference area and the enclosure with fish showed the same patterns in developments with respect to filtering herbivorous cladocerans and periphyton. Scraping cladoceran biomass was higher in the fish-free treatment resulting in a positive correlation between scraping cladoceran and periphyton biomass. Our results suggest that the positive indirect effect of filtering herbivorous cladoceran nutrient regeneration on periphyton was stronger than the negative direct effect of grazing by scraping cladocerans on periphyton in this semi-open system, and that pelagic production by phytoplankton may foster periphyton growth in the littoral habitat via filtering herbivorous cladocerans. Furthermore, heterogeneity within trophic levels involving primary producers of different growth forms such as phytoplankton and periphyton may enhance the potential for compensatory responses via nutrient recycling.  相似文献

The ecological assembly of food web is considered as a process of predator colonizations and extinctions. The results of computer simulations using predator-prey equations allow us to identify three types of food web stability and examine how they may change through development of food webs. Species turnover stability increases, stability to extensive species extinction remains constant, and local stability to population fluctuations decreases as food web assembly proceeds.  相似文献

Scavenging can have important consequences for food web dynamics, for example, it may support additional consumer species and affect predation on live prey. Still, few food web models include scavenging. We develop a dynamic model that includes two facultative scavenger species, which we refer to as the predator or scavenger species according to their natural scavenging propensity, as well as live prey, and a carrion pool to show ramifications of scavenging for predation in simple food webs. Our modeling suggests that the presence of scavengers can both increase and decrease predator kill rates and overall predation in model food webs and the impact varies (in magnitude and direction) with context. In particular, we explore the impact of the amount of dynamics (exploitative competition) allowed in the predator, scavenger, and prey populations as well as the direction and magnitude of interference competition between predators and scavengers. One fundamental prediction is that scavengers most likely increase predator kill rates, especially if there are exploitative feedback effects on the prey or carrion resources like is normally observed in natural systems. Scavengers only have minimal effects on predator kill rate when predator, scavenger, and prey abundances are kept constant by management. In such controlled systems, interference competition can greatly affect the interactions in contrast to more natural systems, with an increase in interference competition leading to a decrease in predator kill rate. Our study adds to studies that show that the presence of predators affects scavenger behavior, vital rates, and food web structure, by showing that scavengers impact predator kill rates through multiple mechanisms, and therefore indicating that scavenging and predation patterns are tightly intertwined. We provide a road map to the different theoretical outcomes and their support from different empirical studies on vertebrate guilds to provide guidance in wildlife management.  相似文献

1. The consumption of microcrustacea by two polyphagous predators, larvae of the caddisfly Plectrocnemia conspersa (Curtis) and the alderfly Sialis fuliginosa Pictet, was investigated in an English stream with a well-known macro- and microinvertebrate fauna. Benthic samples were collected in August, November, December and April, and the gut contents of all individuals of both predators were examined. 2. All the microcrustacean groups (Cyclopoida, Harpacticoida, Chydoridae and Ostracoda) were identified in gut contents. Of the ten taxa present in the benthos, all occurred in the diet of P. conspersa; nine were found in S. fuliginosa. 3. Ontogenetic shifts in the diets of both predators were found, and microcrustacea were consumed more frequently by small than large instars. 4. There was little evidence of selective feeding by P. conspersa, whereas ostracods were over-represented in the diet of S. fuliginosa, compared with benthic relative densities. The Chydoridae were under-represented in the diet of both predators. 5. The food web of Broadstone Stream is perhaps the most detailed web available for any running water habitat. Increased taxonomic resolution produced marked changes in values of connectance and predator-prey ratios. Linkage density remained fairly constant at different levels of resolution and were high, indicative of a web of generalist species. Omnivory was pronounced and may be characteristic of donor-controlled systems where organic detritus is the primary energy base.  相似文献

Food web statistics showed a complex relationship with measures of habitat variability in temporary ponds. Connectance was highest in short-duration, highly variable habitats, and lowest in habitats of intermediate duration and variability. The number of links and links/taxon increased with increasing duration. Much of the variation in the food web statistics could be explained by a strong linear relationship between number of taxa and number of links/taxon and a quadratic relationship of taxa number with the number of links. However, after accounting for this variation, there remained a relationship of duration with links and links/taxon. The relationship between the food web statistics and duration corresponded to experimental evaluations of predation in these habitats that showed an increasing importance of predation in long-duration habitats. The food web statistics, however, missed threshold effects in the relationship between predation and habitat duration. Differences in food web statistics before and after a regional drought could be explained by a decrease in taxa number after the drought. Connectance was the most robust statistic in relation to taxa number, but was also the least sensitive to changes in habitat characteristics. Brown trout and food web interactions in a Minnesota stream   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. We examined indirect, community‐level interactions in a stream that contained non‐native brown trout (Salmo trutta Linnaeus), native brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis Mitchill) and native slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus Richardson). Our objectives were to examine benthic invertebrate composition and prey selection of fishes (measured by total invertebrate dry mass, dry mass of individual invertebrate taxa and relative proportion of invertebrate taxa in the benthos and diet) among treatments (no fish, juvenile brook trout alone, juvenile brown trout alone, sculpin with brook trout and sculpin with brown trout). 2. We assigned treatments to 1 m2 enclosures/exclosures placed in riffles in Valley Creek, Minnesota, and conducted six experimental trials. We used three designs of fish densities (addition of trout to a constant number of sculpin with unequal numbers of trout and sculpin; addition of trout to a constant number of sculpin with equal numbers of trout and sculpin; and replacement of half the sculpin with an equal number of trout) to investigate the relative strength of interspecific versus intraspecific interactions. 3. Presence of fish (all three species, alone or in combined‐species treatments) was not associated with changes in total dry mass of benthic invertebrates or shifts in relative abundance of benthic invertebrate taxa, regardless of fish density design. 4. Brook trout and sculpin diets did not change when each species was alone compared with treatments of both species together. Likewise, we did not find evidence for shifts in brown trout or sculpin diets when each species was alone or together. 5. We suggest that native brook trout and non‐native brown trout fill similar niches in Valley Creek. We did not find evidence that either species had an effect on stream communities, potentially due to high invertebrate productivity in Valley Creek.  相似文献

Determining statistical patterns irrespective of interacting agents (i.e. macroecology) is useful to explore the mechanisms driving population fluctuations and extinctions in natural food webs. Here, we tested four predictions of a neutral model on the distribution of community fluctuations (CF) and the distributions of persistence times (APT). Novel predictions for the food web were generated by combining (1) body size–density scaling, (2) Taylor's law and (3) low efficiency of trophic transference. Predictions were evaluated on an exceptional data set of plankton with 15 years of weekly samples encompassing c. 250 planktonic species from three trophic levels, sampled in the western English Channel. Highly symmetric non‐Gaussian distributions of CF support zero‐sum dynamics. Variability in CF decreased while a change from an exponential to a power law distribution of APT from basal to upper trophic positions was detected. Results suggest a predictable but profound effect of trophic position on fluctuations and extinction in natural communities.  相似文献

1. Omnivory is an important interaction that has been the centre of numerous theoretical and empirical studies in recent years. Most of these studies examine the conditions necessary for coexistence between an omnivore and an intermediate consumer. Trait variation in ecological interactions (competition and predator tolerance) among intermediate consumers has not been considered in previous empirical studies despite the evidence that variation in species-specific traits can have important community-level effects. 2. I conducted a multifactorial microcosm experiment using species from the Sarracenia purpurea phytotelmata community, organisms that inhabit the water collected within its modified leaves. The basal trophic level consisted of bacterial decomposers, the second trophic level (intermediate consumers) consisted of protozoa and rotifers, and the third trophic level (omnivore) were larvae of the pitcher plant mosquito Wyeomyia smithii. Trophic level number (1, 2 and 3), resources (low and high), omnivore density (low and high) and intermediate consumer (monoculture of five protozoa and rotifers) identity were manipulated. Abundance of the basal trophic level, intermediate consumers, and growth of the omnivore were measured, as well as time to extinction (intermediate consumers) and time to pupation (mosquito larvae). 3. The presence of different intermediate consumers affected both bacteria abundance and omnivore growth. At high resource levels, Poteriochromonas, Colpidium and Habrotrocha rosa reduced bacteria densities greater than omnivore reduction of bacteria. Mosquito larvae did not pupate at low resource levels except when Poteriochromonas and Colopoda were present as intermediate consumers. Communities with H. rosa were the only ones consistent with the prediction that omnivores should exclude intermediate consumers at high resources. 4. These results had mixed support for predictions from omnivory food web theory. Intermediate consumers responded and affected this community differently under different community structures and resource levels. Consequently, variation in species-specific traits can have important population- and community-level effects and needs to be considered in food webs with omnivory.  相似文献

A number of computational and experimental studies have identified intramolecular communication "pathways" or "networks" important for transmitting allostery. Here, we have used mutagenesis and NMR relaxation methods to investigate the scope and nature of the communication networks found in the second post-synaptic density-95/discs large/zonula occludens-1 (PDZ) domain of the human protein tyrosine phosphatase 1E protein (hPTP1E) (PDZ2). It was found that most mutations do not have a significant energetic contribution to peptide ligand binding. Three mutants that showed significant changes in binding also displayed context-dependent dynamic effects. Both a mutation at a partially exposed site (H71Y) and a buried core position (I35V) had a limited response in side-chain (2)H-based dynamics when compared to wild-type PDZ2. In contrast, a change at a second core position (I20F) that had previously been shown to be part of an energetic and dynamic network, resulted in extensive changes in side-chain dynamics. This response is reminiscent to that seen previously upon peptide ligand binding. These results shed light on the nature of the PDZ2 dynamic network and suggest that position 20 in PDZ2 acts as a "hub" that is energetically and dynamically critical for transmitting changes in dynamics throughout the PDZ domain.  相似文献

We developed a mechanistic model of nutrient, phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish interactions to test the effects of phytoplankton food quality for herbivorous zooplankton on planktonic food web processes. When phytoplankton food quality is high strong trophic cascades suppress phytoplankton biomass, the zooplankton can withstand intense zooplanktivory, and energy is efficiently transferred through the food web sustaining higher trophic level production. Low food quality results in trophic decoupling at the plant-animal interface, with phytoplankton biomass determined primarily by nutrient availability, zooplankton easily eliminated by fish predation, and poor energy transfer through the food web. At a given nutrient availability, food quality and zooplanktivory interact to determine zooplankton biomass which in turn determines algal biomass. High food quality resulted in intense zooplankton grazing which favored fast-growing phytoplankton taxa, whereas fish predation favored slow-growing phytoplankton. These results suggest algal food quality for herbivorous zooplankton can strongly influence the nature of aquatic food web dynamics, and can have profound effects on water quality and fisheries production. A top-down cascade in detritus-based food webs has the potential to alter ecosystem functioning but its prevalence in terrestrial systems remains unclear. We manipulated the density of the dominant web spider Neriene brongersmai for 1.5 years to see whether the cascading effect would propagate down to the litter decomposition rate in the forest-floor of a Japanese cedar forest. Decreasing spider abundance increased collembolan density, but it did not change the biomass of microorganisms or the litter decomposition rate. We propose possible explanations for the absence of a top-down cascade and discuss the difficulty in generalizing the presence and absence of a cascading effect in soil ecosystems.  相似文献
