We investigated the seasonal pattern of changes in body condition of breeding black‐legged kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla in Svalbard (79°N) to evaluate whether changes in body condition were a consequence of the energetic demands of breeding (the reproductive stress hypothesis) or of voluntary anorexia to attain lower flight costs during chick rearing (the programmed anorexia hypothesis). Adult body condition was recorded from early egg laying to fledging and was examined in relation to date (relative to hatching), sex, parental time‐budget, brood size and reproductive success. To distinguish between the two hypotheses we evaluate whether the reduction in body condition occurred during or ahead of the energetically most demanding part of the chick‐rearing period. We combine our results on changes in body condition and time‐budget with published information on field metabolic rate (FMR) and chick energy requirements from studies in the same colony.
Our calculations of adult energy requirements and energy intakes indicate that the first part of the chick‐rearing period was energetically the most demanding period, because adult energy requirement per hour spent off the nest was highest in this period, and adults were time constrained because of the need for 24‐h brooding of the chicks.
During the incubation period female body condition increased slightly, but significantly, while male body condition was stable. During the first part of the chick‐rearing period, female and male body condition decreased by 14.8% and 8.4%, respectively. During the second part of the chick‐rearing period, both male and female body condition remained stable. The reductions in body condition occurred during the phase which was suggested to be the energetically most demanding part of the chick‐rearing period, thus supporting the reproductive stress hypothesis. Parental body condition during the incubation period was positively related to the probability of successfully fledging young, providing additional support for the reproductive stress hypothesis.  相似文献

Energy and time allocation differs between incubation and chick‐rearing periods, which may lead to an adjustment in the foraging behaviour of parent birds. Here, we investigated the foraging behaviour of a small alcid, the little auk Alle alle during incubation and compared it with the chick‐rearing period in West Spitsbergen, using the miniature GPS (in Hornsund) and temperature loggers (in Magdalenefjorden). GPS‐tracking of 11 individuals revealed that during incubation little auks foraged 8–55 (median 46) km from the colony covering 19–239 (median 120) km during one foraging trip. Distance from the colony to foraging areas was similar during incubation and chick‐rearing period. During incubation 89% of foraging positions were located in the zone over shallower parts of the shelf (isobaths up to 200–300 m) with sea surface temperature below 2.5°C. Those environmental conditions are preferred by Arctic zooplankton community. Thus, little auks in the Hornsund area restrict their foraging (both during the incubation and chick‐rearing period) to the area under influence of cold, Arctic‐origin water masses where its most preferred prey, copepod Calanus glacialis is most abundant. The temperature logger data (from 4 individuals) indicate that in contrast to the chick‐rearing period, when parent birds alternated short and long trips, during the incubation they performed only long trips. Adopting such a flexible foraging strategy allows little auks to alter their foraging strategy to meet different energy and time demands during the two main stages of the breeding.  相似文献

Mass loss of chick‐rearing birds can be the direct consequence of physiological stress (reproductive stress hypothesis) or an adaptive mass adjustment in response to the increased demands on flight efficiency during the flight‐intensive chick‐rearing period (adaptive mass loss hypothesis). To test which of these hypotheses best explains mass loss in South Polar Skuas Stercorarius maccormicki rearing chicks, a food supplementation experiment was carried out in the austral summer 2000/01 at King George Island, Antarctica. Half of the breeding pairs were fed about 20% of the chick's daily energy demand every second day and chick growth and adult nest attendance were recorded. Parents were caught at the start and the end of chick‐rearing to calculate adult mass loss. Male parents of food‐supplemented pairs attended their nest territories more than control males but females kept their attendance constant. Chick growth was only minimally affected and the treatment probably had no fitness consequences. Male Skuas in control pairs had a higher deviation from the body size–mass regression at the end of chick‐rearing compared with the start, supporting the stress hypothesis, whereas female deviation remained unchanged. Males of food‐supplemented pairs were heavier than unsupplemented males at the end of the breeding cycle but not significantly so. Food‐supplemented females were lighter at the end, supporting the adaptive mass loss hypothesis. Adult mass loss is thus best explained by the reproductive stress hypothesis in males but by the adaptive mass loss hypothesis in females. However, the two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive and the results do not exclude the possibility that mass loss in females is stress‐induced but the amount of mass lost is an adaptive adjustment to the reliability of the food supply. The finding that members of a breeding pair may follow different strategies of mass adjustment has implications for the use of mass loss as an index of parental effort. Without knowing which strategy each sex has adopted it is of little use to compare mass loss between parents.  相似文献

Incubation was for a long time considered to be a period of decreased activity and low cost for parents. It was therefore ignored as a potential factor affecting life‐history trade‐offs in birds. Lately this view has started to change, and studies now show that there might be considerable costs connected to incubation. We experimentally reduced the nest temperature during incubation in blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus, thus increasing the energetic cost of incubation, to test the importance of incubation as a component of reproductive costs and for nestling quality. While most other studies use brood size manipulation to manipulate reproductive costs, we were able to separate treatment effects acting during the incubation period from those acting on later reproductive performance by applying a cross‐foster design. We were also able to isolate the effects of decreased incubation temperature on the nestlings from treatment effects acting on incubating females. We found no experimental effect on the length of the incubation period or on hatching success. The lower temperature during incubation, however, caused lower growth rates in nestlings and reduced chick rearing capacity in adults. We conclude that incubation is a costly period, with the potential to affect both the trade‐off between current and future reproduction and the one between parental effort and offspring quality within the current breeding attempt.  相似文献

Procellariiform seabirds have extreme life histories; they are very long‐lived, first breed when relatively old, lay single egg clutches, both incubation and chick‐rearing are prolonged and chicks exhibit slow growth. The early part of the breeding season is crucial, when pair bonds are re‐established and partners coordinate their breeding duties, but is a difficult period to study in burrow‐nesting species. Miniature geolocators (Global Location Sensors or GLS loggers) now offer a way to collect data on burrow attendance, as well as determine at‐sea movements. We studied the early breeding season in thin‐billed prions Pachyptila belcheri breeding at New Island, Falkland Islands. Males and females arrived back at the colony at similar times, with peak arrival in the last days of September. However, males spent more time on land during the pre‐laying period, presumably defending and maintaining the burrow and maximising mating opportunities. Males departed later than females, and carried out a significantly shorter pre‐laying exodus. Males took on the first long incubation shift, whereas females returned to sea soon after egg laying. During the pre‐laying exodus and incubation, males and females travelled at similar speeds (> 250 km d?1) and were widely distributed over large areas of the Patagonian Shelf. Inter‐annual differences in oceanographic conditions were stronger during the incubation than during the pre‐laying exodus and were matched by stronger differences in distribution. The study thus suggests that extended trips and flexible distribution enable thin‐billed prions to meet the high energy demands of egg production and incubation despite low productivity in waters around the colony during the early summer.  相似文献

The foraging range and principal feeding areas of White‐chinned Petrels breeding at South Georgia were determined using satellite telemetry. Foraging trips during incubation lasted 12–15 days and covered 3000–8000 km and 2–11 days and 1100–5900 km during chick‐rearing. Adults covered less distance per day during chick‐rearing (71 km) than during incubation (91 km) but the proportion covered at night (47%) was the same. Mean (31–34 km/h) and maximum (80 km/h) flight velocities were similar during both periods of the breeding season and during day and night. Between incubation shifts, White‐chinned Petrels travelled to the Patagonian shelf; during chick‐rearing they foraged more extensively. Most locations were between 30° to 55°W and 52° to 60°W around South Georgia/Shag Rocks and south to the South Orkney Islands. Diet samples from known foraging locations suggested birds fed mainly on krill and squid. They caught the squid Brachioteuthis? picta and Galiteuthis glacialis around Shag Rocks/South Georgia and also at sites close to the South Orkney Islands; Illex argentinus on the Patagonian shelf. Dispersal of adults after breeding failure was south to the South Orkney Islands then west to the Falkland Islands. This study confirms that breeding White‐chinned Petrels are amongst the widest‐ranging of seabirds; they may minimise competition with other Procellariiformes in the South Atlantic by their more extensive foraging range. The nature and extent of their range also brings substantial risk of high mortality rate in South Atlantic long‐line fisheries.  相似文献

Reproduction is a demanding phase of bird's life cycle and imposes various physiological challenges. Increasing oxidative stress (OS) has been proposed as one of the costs associated with reproduction. In this study, we investigate the level of OS in a small Arctic seabird, the little auk Alle alle in relation to sex and phase of breeding (incubation, chick‐rearing). We also examine whether OS is related to the birds leucocyte profile. We expected increase in OS with the progress of breeding period (due to increasing energetic demands) and higher values in females (due to high initial investments in production of a large egg). Surprisingly, we found higher OS during incubation compared to chick‐rearing period, suggesting that incubation is a highly demanding reproductive phase in terms of oxidative balance. We suggests that those changes may be attributed to changes in hormone levels affecting oxidative status. Also, in contrasts to our expectations, we did not find sex differences in OS throughout the studied periods of breeding. Finally, we found positive relationships between OS level and haematological parameters: heterophils/lymphocytes ratio, number of leucocytes and lymphocytes per 10 000 erythrocytes, suggesting the effect of the oxidative stress on the immunological system.  相似文献

Due to the ‘double‐clutch’ mating system found in the arctic‐breeding Little Stint Calidris minuta, each parent cares for a clutch and brood alone. The resulting constraint on feeding time, combined with the cold climate and a small body size, may cause energetic bottlenecks. Based on the notion that mass stores in birds serve as an ‘insurance’ for transient periods of negative energy balance, but entail certain costs as well, body mass may vary in relation to climatic conditions and stage of the breeding cycle. We studied body mass in Little Stints in relation to breeding stage and geographical location, during 17 expeditions to 12 sites in the Eurasian Arctic, ranging from north Norway to north‐east Taimyr. Body mass was higher during incubation than during chick‐rearing. Structural size, as estimated by wing length, increased with latitude. This was probably caused by relatively more females (the larger sex) incubating further north, possibly after leaving a first clutch to be incubated by a male further south. Before and after correction for structural size, body mass was strongly related to latitude during both incubation and chick‐rearing. In analogy to a similar geographical pattern in overwintering shorebirds, we interpret the large energy stores of breeding Little Stints as an insurance against periods of cold weather which are a regular feature of arctic summers. Climate data showed that the risk of encountering cold spells lasting several days increases with latitude over the species’ breeding range, and is larger in June than in July. Maintaining these stores is therefore less necessary at southern sites and during the chick‐rearing period than in the incubation period. When guarding chicks, feeding time is less constrained than during incubation, temperatures tend to be higher than in the incubation period, reducing energy expenditure, and the availability of insect prey reaches a seasonal maximum. However, the alternative interpretation that the chick‐tending period is more energetically stressful than the incubation period, resulting in a negative energy balance for the parent, could not be rejected on the present evidence.  相似文献

Patterns of nest attendance in birds result from complex behaviours and influence the success of reproductive events. Incubation behaviours vary based on individual body condition, energy requirements and environmental factors. We assessed nest attendance patterns in Cinnamon Teal Spatula cyanoptera breeding in the San Luis Valley of Colorado in 2016–2017 using trail and video cameras to observe behaviours throughout incubation. We evaluated the effect of temporal, life‐history and environmental covariates on the frequency and duration of incubation recesses as well as the incubation constancy. There was considerable model uncertainty among the models used to evaluate recess frequency. Recess duration varied according to the interaction between nest age and a quadratic effect of time of day, with hens on older nests taking longer recesses in the afternoon and hens on nests earlier in incubation taking longer recesses in the morning and evening. Incubation constancy decreased with higher ambient temperatures in the study area. This study provides evidence that Cinnamon Teal modify their behaviour during incubation according to the age of the nest and the time of day. These results improve our knowledge of Cinnamon Teal breeding ecology and shed light on the behaviours that fast‐lived species may use to cope with environmental factors during nesting.  相似文献

Shorebirds show high variability in parental care strategies among species, populations, and environments. Research on shorebird parental sex roles can help to understand the selective pressures that shape avian breeding strategies. Although several studies have examined parental care strategies in holarctic shorebirds, very little research has been conducted in the tropics. Here we examined parental sex roles during territorial defence, incubation, and chick-rearing in Malaysian plovers Charadrius peronii in the Gulf of Thailand. The costs and gains of particular parental behaviour may vary between the sexes and can be affected differently by environmental factors and chick age. Thus we also examined how temperature, prey availability, chick or embryo age, and time of day affected parental sex roles. Males spent more time defending territories and were further away from chicks whereas females spent more time incubating eggs. Both adults contributed to chick defence during disturbances throughout the entire chick-rearing period. Total nest attendance (sum of both sexes) was affected by the modelled temperature of an unincubated egg. Prey availability, embryo age, and time of day had no effect on total nest attendance. Males adjusted incubation effort in response to temperature only at high temperatures (>36°C) whereas females adjusted nest attendance at high and low temperatures. Chick age had no effect on the proportion of time adults spent defending territories or responding to disturbance. Pairs were more likely to fledge chicks if both the male and female spent more time defending territories. For Malaysian plovers, high cooperation between the sexes during parental care may help to achieve high quality breeding territories, maintain body conditions during hot days, protect offspring from predators and attacking conspecifics, and contribute to high lifetime reproductive success.  相似文献

Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) males and females, nesting in Antarctica, alternate attendance at the nest with absences of many days to forage at sea. We investigated the importance of tactile input from egg and chicks on prolactin levels by observing nest attendance patterns and obtaining blood samples (1) during the first nest exchange of the incubation stage, (2) from birds whose incubation period was artificially increased or decreased by about 10 days, and (3) from birds whose nests had failed. Prolactin levels in females after 8 to 11 days of absence from the breeding colony did not differ from those in incubating males and did not change after females resumed incubation. Moving eggs between nests resulted in nests in which chicks hatched after about 26, 36 (normal), or 46 days. Duration of incubation did not affect prolactin levels in the parents measured during incubation, at the pip stage, hatch stage, or early brood stage. Adults first left their chicks unguarded on about the same calendar date, regardless of chick age. However, chicks from long incubation nests averaged 8 days younger when they were left unguarded than chicks from control or short-incubation nests. In females, there was no effect of nest failure on prolactin levels. In males, prolactin levels were slightly lower after nest failure than in males tending nests. Testosterone was significantly higher in males after nest failure than in males still tending nests. Prolactin is elevated in Adélie penguins as part of the program of cyclical hormonal changes that accompany the lengthy reproductive season and is relatively independent of tactile input. Sustained prolactin secretion is probably required for the maintenance of parental behavior in offshore feeding species that must be absent from the nest for many days at a time.  相似文献

Different phases of the annual cycle in birds and mammals are often associated with characteristic and recurrent foraging behaviours. The extent to which stage‐dependent changes in foraging behaviour are caused by intrinsic or extrinsic factors is unclear. We controlled for the effects of extrinsic factors by synchronising groups of incubating and chick‐rearing black‐legged kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla. Synchrony amongst incubators and rearers was achieved experimentally by switching eggs between nests. Behavioural responses to the treatment varied between the sexes. Male kittiwakes with prolonged‐incubation made fewer foraging trips but of greater duration compared to those rearing chicks resulting in no change in the time spent on trips between the two groups. Females with prolonged‐incubation carried out fewer trips than those rearing chicks but trip duration did not differ between the two stages which resulted in prolonged‐incubating birds spending a lower percentage time on trips. In contrast, foraging ranges did not differ between prolonged‐incubation and chick‐rearing birds for either sex. This suggests that extrinsic factors, such as food availability and distribution determine kittiwake foraging locations and ranges, whereas intrinsic factors, reflected in parental duties, constrain nest attendance. Female prolonged‐incubators invested lower levels of parental effort, in terms of daily energy expenditure, compared to chick‐rearers whereas males did not show stage‐related differences in energy expenditure. This provides evidence that incubation could be an energetically cheaper stage although under normal conditions this difference may be masked by temporal variation in environmental factors. We conclude that while conditions differ between the incubation and chick rearing stages for kittiwakes at this colony, they are not the main factors prompting changes in stage‐related foraging patterns. Intrinsic factors such as sex differences, or behaviours required for each stage of the annual cycle, rather than extrinsic factors related to seasonal environments, are likely to be the main proximate cause of recurring changes in behaviour between breeding stages.  相似文献

Reproductive success increases with age in many species, however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and several hypotheses have been proposed to explain age‐related improvements in reproductive output. In this contribution we investigated the effects of age, recruitment age, breeding experience and sex on reproductive performance during the early breeding career in the common tern Sterna hirundo using long‐term individual‐based data. We used measurements of performance, which spanned the entire breeding process: clutch size, hatching success, fledging success and fledglings per pair. Longitudinal analyses within individuals showed a clear increase with age in all performance measures. Furthermore, a significant change in reproductive performance was found between first time‐ and experienced breeders. Recruitment age had a strong influence on hatching and fledging success: two‐year‐old recruits had significantly lower reproductive success than birds which recruited at older ages, but the increase in breeding performance with experience was stronger in young recruits. Comparing age and experience effects, age effects were more pronounced during the first breeding attempts, whereas experience effects were also visible in subsequent breeding attempts. The degree of intra‐individual improvements in reproductive performance is due to a complex interplay of age at first breeding and experience. The results strongly support the constraint hypothesis.  相似文献

Breeding Brünnich's guillemots Uria lomvia show stepwise mass loss at the time of hatch. This mass loss has usually been explained as an adaptation to reduce the cost of flight during the chick‐rearing period because flight time increases during that period. It is possible, however, that mass loss also increases dive performance during the chick‐rearing period because time spent diving also increases during that period. Reduced mass could reduce basal metabolic rate or costs associated with buoyancy and therefore increase aerobic dive limit. To examine the role of mass loss in dive behavior, we attached time‐depth‐temperature recorders for 24–48 h to chick‐rearing and incubating Brünnich's guillemots at Coats Island, Nunavut (2005: n=45, 2006: n=40), and recorded body mass before and after each deployment. There was no relationship between mass and dive duration during either incubation or chick‐rearing. Seventeen of the birds we sampled during incubation were resampled during chick‐rearing. For this group, dive duration increased with mass loss between incubation and chick‐rearing (r2=0.67–0.75). Mass loss occurred through reductions in metabolically‐active tissues (liver, bladder) and buoyant tissues (lipids) although muscle and gut mass did not change. Despite the large change in lipids, buoyancy only changed by 0.1%, and mass loss therefore did not have much effect on costs associated with buoyancy. Nonetheless, surface pause duration for a given dive depth decreased during chick‐rearing, supporting the idea that reduced mass led to increased aerobic dive limit through reduced metabolic rate and inertial costs; oxygen stores did not increase. We also attached neutrally (n=9) and negatively (n=11) buoyant handicaps to the legs of adults to assess the effect of artificial mass increases on time budgets. Artificially increasing mass decreased total time spent diving but did not change time spent flying. There was no change in shift length between incubation and chick‐rearing, and therefore no support for the idea that mass loss reflected a change in fasting endurance requirements. An energetic model suggested that the observed mass reduction reduced dive costs by 5–8% and flight costs by 3%. We concluded that mass loss may be as important for increasing dive performance as increasing flight performance.  相似文献

Crèching behaviour is common in colonial seabirds; nevertheless, the factors inducing chicks to aggregate remain relatively poorly understood. It has been proposed that brood size, laying date and nest attendance are important factors in the formation of a crèche. Moreover, in most species of pelicans, chicks join crèches following the development of homoeothermy and coincident with the end of the brooding behaviour. We studied effects of feeding rate, nest attendance, brood size, laying date and homoeothermy on the age at which chicks entered the crèche at a colony of Dalmatian pelicans (Pelecanus crispus), in Srebarna, Bulgaria. Single chicks were fed more frequently than chicks from two-chick broods. Unlike American white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), Dalmatian pelicans maintained brooding behaviour a further 9 days after chicks had developed thermoregulation abilities. In contrast to nests with two chicks, nests with only one chick were never left unattended by the parents before the chick reached the crèching stage. Laying date, nest attendance and brood size did not affect the age that the chick entered the crèche. The age the chick entered the crèche was not correlated with the age of homoeothermy acquisition, but chicks significantly joined the crèche at younger ages when the mean number of feeds per chick per day during the rearing period in the nest was higher. This result suggests an implication of growth rate in the crèching age. Joining the crèche earlier can provide benefits that could have strong implications for the chicks’ future reproductive lives.  相似文献

Albatrosses exhibit extremely low reproductive rates, each pair brooding only one egg and subsequent chick at a time. Furthermore, in several of the species, the majority of successful pairs breed only once every second year (termed 'biennial' breeding). Thus, on average, these latter species have an annual fecundity of about half an offspring per year, while other albatrosses produce an egg and chick every year. Using our 40-year bank of demographic data, we compared 12 species of albatrosses according to these two breeding strategies to examine potential causes of biennial breeding. Biennial breeding could be due to physiological constraints, larger animals breeding more slowly, or ecological constraints, more distant pelagic feeding trips being energetically costly, or both. We tested these hypotheses by looking for predicted associations between the duration of the rearing period, the distance to the oceanic feeding zone and breeding frequency. We also looked for associations of these variables with other life-history traits. Body size had a strong influence on the duration of the rearing period, but not on the distance that birds travelled to the feeding zone. Both the duration of the rearing period and distance to the feeding zone appeared to have direct influences on breeding frequency, as revealed by a path analysis, and thus both hypotheses to explain biennial breeding were supported. Finally, breeding frequency exhibited a strong trade-off with adult survival and age at maturity, indicating that slower breeders live through more breeding seasons, perhaps mitigating their lower annual reproductive output.  相似文献

In the Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea borealis of Selvagem Grande (30 degrees 09'N, 15 degrees 52'W), the visits the birds pay to their colonies are cyclic throughout the breeding period. The number of visitors varies regularly between a minimum and a maximum following a sinusoid, the half-period of which is 4.8 +/- 1.5 d (2-8 d). No variation exists according to the status of the birds (breeders or non-breeders) or to the stage of the breeding cycle (pre-egg, incubation or chick rearing) and moon phases have no influence. Among Procellariids, such attendance cycles are related to the length of the pre-egg stage. They are absent when it is short (less than 50 d), present when it is long (more than 60 d), and indifferently present or absent when it is intermediate (50-60 d). Considering the comparative scarcity of the visits of the birds to the colonies during the pre-egg stage, these cycles are likely to play a part essentially in the synchronisation of individuals in colonies and of mates in pairs.  相似文献

Variables such as weather or other abiotic factors should have a higher influence on demographic rates in border areas than in central areas, given that climatic adaptation might be important in determining range borders. Similarly, for a given area, the relationship between weather and reproduction should be dissimilar for species which are in the centre of their breeding range and those that are near the edge. We tested this hypothesis on two sympatric ground‐nesting raptors, the hen harrier Circus cyaneus and the Montagu's harrier Circus pygargus in Madrid, central Spain, where the hen harrier is at the southern edge of its breeding range in the western Palearctic and the Montagu's harrier is central in its distribution. We examined the reproductive success of both species during an 8‐yr period, and looked at the influence of the most stressful abiotic factors in the study area (between‐year variation in rainfall and within‐year variation in temperature) on reproductive parameters. In the hen harrier, low levels of rainfall during the breeding season had a negative influence on annual fledging success and thus on population fledgling production. The relationship between rainfall and reproduction was probably mediated through food abundance, which in Mediterranean habitat depends directly on rainfall levels. In the Montagu's harrier, no negative effect of dry seasons on productivity was found. Additionally, in the hen harrier, the proportion of eggs that did not hatch in each clutch increased with higher temperatures during the incubation period. No such relationship was found in the Montagu's harrier. We interpret these between‐species differences in terms of differences of breeding range and adaptations to the average conditions existing there. Hen harriers, commonest at northern latitudes, are probably best adapted to the most typical conditions at those latitudes, and have probably not developed thermoregulatory or behavioural mechanisms to cope with drought and high temperatures in Mediterranean habitats, in contrast to Montagu's harrier. Thus hen harrier distribution might be constrained by these variables, due to lower reproductive success or higher reproductive costs. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors recorded at individual nests can predict offspring fitness and survival but few studies have examined these effects in the tropics. We recorded nestling survival, post‐fledging survival and age at first return of Roseate Terns breeding at Aride Island, Seychelles, over a 12‐year period (1998–2009). Nest data recorded at the egg, nestling and fledging stages were collected during six breeding seasons (1998, 2001–2005) and a capture‐mark‐recapture dataset of six cohorts of fledglings was obtained from 2001–2009. Logistic regression models were used to assess the predictive effect of reproductive variables on fledging success, while multistate capture‐mark‐recapture models were used to estimate post‐fledging survival and return–recruitment probabilities to the natal site. Nestling survival probability increased with earliness of laying and was negatively affected by tick infestation during the growth period (0–23 days). Fledging probability was also positively related to chick body condition, whereas other pre‐fledging reproductive parameters such as clutch size and egg size were not influential. A multistate modelling of age‐specific survival and return–recruitment (transition) rates found that first‐year survival differed between cohorts and was also negatively affected by tick infestation. Annual survival stabilized from age 2 onwards at 0.83 ± 0.02. Transition rates were positively related to body condition at fledging, with heavier individuals returning for the first time to the natal colony at a younger age compared with lighter individuals. These results highlight the importance of local conditions encountered by tropical seabirds during the breeding season in shaping demographic parameters.  相似文献

Dietary specialization has been described across a wide range of taxa in the animal kingdom. Fitness consequences are, however, not well documented. We examined the reproductive consequences of different dietary specializations in the herring gull Larus argentatus, an omnivorous seabird, using an extensive dataset which includes breeding and dietary data of 10 successive years. We hypothesized that pairs that focused on prey of higher energetic value would yield higher fledging rates. An alternative hypothesis is that pairs that relied on more resources simultaneously would reproduce better. The novelty of this study is that we used continuous measurements representing dietary composition and degree of specialization rather than restricting our analysis to predefined categories. By relating these two continuous measurements for diet to several proxies for reproductive success, we show clear consequences of dietary choice. Most pairs concentrated on bivalves, a prey type not particularly rich in energy. Pairs feeding on energy‐rich prey (e.g., “domestic refuse and fishery discards”) during chick rearing were found to have a higher reproductive success, supporting the first hypothesis. Pairs that used more resources did not clearly have a higher reproductive success. The majority of the pairs did not switch to energy‐rich prey during chick rearing, despite low breeding outcome. We discuss how trade‐offs between factors such as resource availability, predictability, and the time and energy needed to obtain certain prey species may influence resource selection.  相似文献
